Remember, finding scholarship opportunities is only half of the task involved in earning funds for your education. Once you’ve found some good fits from our list, it’s time to start applying. Before you begin your applications, sit down and do some reflection to decide what approach you’ll take. Ask yourselves some questions and write down the answers with no regard to grammar, word limits, or anything like that; just get them out on the page to pull from as you begin to write. Here are a few questions you might ask:

• When did I first become interested in medicine?
• What change do I hope to make in the world through my career as a doctor?
• When have I demonstrated skills that indicate my potential as a future doctor?
• Where do I see myself in 10 years?

You can also try asking these questions to your friends, family, and other trusted adults. Oftentimes, they have some insight into your past accomplishments that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of.

Need-based financial aid for medical school

Medical school students can also apply for need based financial aid to pay for their M.D. There are two main applications that students should know about when thinking about need-based financial aid:

• FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid is how financial aid from the federal government is awarded, which includes federal student loans.
• CSS Profile is a financial aid application offered by the College Board. The CSS Profile is how some medical schools will award institutional financial aid, which can include grants, scholarships, and student loans. Yale School of Medicine is one medical school that uses the CSS Profile for both scholarships and Yale student loans.

Students who need even more financial aid can consider private student loans . Remember, these private loans should be a last resort as they may have higher interest rates and less flexible repayment options than loans from the federal government.

Can doctors qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness?

Doctors who work in a non-profit or public sector and make regular loan payments for ten years should be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness . This would mean that any remaining federal loan balance after those ten years would be forgiven; they would never have to repay it.

It’s worth noting that PSLF has a notoriously strict set of rules for eligibility, so if you plan to take advantage of the program, be sure to educate yourself on all of the stipulations to ensure that you fulfill them.

Can you use the Pell Grant to pay for medical school?

Only undergraduate students are eligible for the Pell Grant , so although you can use it to pay for a pre-med education, you won’t be able to use it for med school.

Financial Aid

Md/mdphd scholarships, the warren alpert medical school scholarship funds.

The Warren Alpert Medical School is deeply grateful to the thousands of donors who offer generous scholarship support to our medical students. Through a combination of endowment income, annual gifts, a percentage of tuition revenue, and grants from the federal government, AMS was able to offer over $6 million dollars in institutional scholarship funds to 50% of all aid recipients. The average scholarship award in 2018-19 year was approximately $33,730.

Institutional Need-Based Scholarships

The financial aid office awards scholarships from the institution to students on the basis of financial need. A student may be considered for this type of scholarship by applying as an institutional aid applicant. Please review the application page for details about applying for institutional need-based scholarship funding.

Institutional Merit-Based Scholarships

Tuition scholarships are awarded to AMS MD/PhD students that are not based on need. In addition, the Office of Admission offers merit scholarships based on criteria other than need. All other financial aid at The Warren Alpert Medical School is awarded on the basis of financial need.

There is no separate application to apply for U-M scholarships and grants. By submitting your FAFSA and UMMS Financial Aid application, we will consider your eligibility for these programs. Your financial situation and your need level is important to us. UMMS practices need-blind admissions, and we work hard to make sure medical school is affordable to all students.

Scholarships range from a few hundred dollars to full tuition and housing. This type of funding does not have to be repaid. Applicants will learn about scholarship opportunities during their Admissions interview.

Dean’s scholarships are awarded to candidates with outstanding potential for leadership in academic medicine. This award offers funding for all four years of medical school plus funding to cover the cost of an additional/dual degree year at a University of Michigan graduate school.

Other types of scholarships, including department- and donor-sponsored, may be awarded based on financial need, demographic factors and/or an excellent evaluation by the Admissions Committee. About one-half of our entering students receive some type of scholarship.

We also offer need-based grant funds. We’ll consider your eligibility for these based on the information you submit on the FAFSA and UMMS Financial Aid application. Need-based grants do not have to be repaid.

You can also search for and apply for scholarships offered beyond the University of Michigan.

The more scholarship dollars you receive, the less you’ll have to borrow in loans, so it’s worth it to explore other ways to fund your medical education beyond what is available at U-M.

The Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship program distributes $10,000 in tuition assistance scholarships to medical students approaching their final year of school. With 12 scholarship categories and a variety of focus areas, including serving those underrepresented in medicine, the AMA Foundation works to recognize a diverse cohort of medical students each year. All students may apply for the Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships, regardless of AMA membership status.

The Pisacano Leadership Foundation (PLF)  seeks to advance family medicine by providing well-educated, community-minded leaders in primary care. By aiding students who demonstrate the highest levels of commitment to family medicine, scholarship, leadership, character, interpersonal skills, and community service, the PLF will promote the development of the future leaders in the specialty. The program is designed to provide educational programs, leadership training, and funding to reimburse a portion of medical-school-related debt. Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding medical students for a four-year period. Students who have made a commitment to the field of family medicine and who will enter their fourth year in medical school in the fall of 2023 may apply. The PLF will award up to 10 scholarships with a maximum value of $28,000 each for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Society of Hospital Medicine  believes a diverse hospital medicine workforce is important to eliminating health disparities and delivering excellent care for all hospitalized patients. We are proud to announce that SHM’s 2nd annual Hospital Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship is now accepting nominations. This scholarship is made possible through the generous support of our Keystone Sponsor, Vituity. SHM will award a $25,000 medical education scholarship to a third-year medical student from an underrepresented group in medicine who has demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in hospital medicine as well as a commitment to health equity and improving care for underserved communities. Students may self-nominate and apply, or a medical school may nominate one student per year for this award.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) just recently initiated a new program called the  Specialty Education Loan Repayment Program (SELRP) .  SELRP is only available to final year medical students who have  MATCHED  to a residency and physicians in a residency/fellowship program. SELRP will pay a resident  $40,000  for each year while in a residency or fellowship (Maximum 4 years for as total of = $160,000) to apply to the physicians medical school student loan debt. This tax free money cannot be used for any other student loan debt outside of medical school (MD/DO). In return the physician comes to work for the VA in the specialty for which they were trained for a minimum of 2 years (Maximum 4 years).

NMF announced several new and current scholarships  that are open to apply starting today for underrepresented minority medical students who are enrolled in an accredited medical school program. Two scholarships are specific to the state of Michigan and are listed below.

Medical School Scholarships for future and current medical school students, the  Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP ) offers two-, three- and four-year military scholarships. The HPSP covers civilian medical school tuition, pays for fees, provides a monthly living stipend and includes a signing bonus under certain conditions. This scholarship is offered by the Army, Navy and Air Force, and the benefits are the same across all three Services. For those who hope to apply to HPSP, selection boards tend to look at all aspects of a person's application — leadership, extracurricular activities, fitness, grades and scores — so they can determine who will succeed in both medical school and the Military.

The OppU Achievers Scholarship  celebrates achievement in its many forms and honors those who create opportunity for themselves and others. Founded in 2016, the scholarship provides $2,500 for current or future education costs. Scholarship selections are made four times a year. Annually, the OppU Achievers Scholarship awards a total of $10,000 to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement.

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC)  offers a scholarship program for medical students, the Students to Service (S2S) Loan Repayment Program for students in their last year of medical school, federal and state Loan Repayment Programs (LRP), and a new Substance Use Disorder Workforce LRP. All programs are intended to help physicians, or soon to be physicians, with the cost and debt they incur from pursuing a medical career.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

• Amount : Covers tuition, fees, other educational costs and provides a living stipend

Federal Scholarships 

The federal government offers medical school scholarships to students. Below is a list of a few national med school and pre-med scholarships available to any U.S. student who meets the requirements.

NHSC Scholarship (The National Health Service Corps)  

• Amount : tuition, eligible educational costs, and a monthly stipend for living expenses in exchange for military service. 
• Application Process : To begin the NHSC scholarship application process , applicants must complete an online eligibility screening. If applicants do not pass the initial screening, they cannot continue with their application. If passed, applicants will submit their personal information, degree information, and two letters of recommendation. Applicants must also submit a 500-word essay and any additional supporting documents required. 
• Eligibility: To be eligible for the NHSC’s scholarship program , you must be enrolled full-time or accepted into an accredited medical school. You must be a U.S. citizen or naturalized. 
• Deadline: April 27th, 2024 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : This is a great scholarship for future primary care workers. When answering the NHSC’s essay question, you must stress your commitment to working with and helping underserved communities. Like any application, you want your writing to reflect honesty and authenticity, so be sure to speak from the heart when you write about your interest in primary care. 

The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) 

• Amount : tuition, educational fees, and a monthly stipend in exchange for military service.
• Application Process : Before applying , check your military service eligibility. Once confirmed, you must gather all supporting documents, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. You will need to apply to HPSP at the same time you apply to medical schools. During this time, you will also need to contact a military recruiter for whichever service branch (Army, Navy, Air Force) you are interested in joining. A few more steps are involved in applying to HPSP, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the entire process before you begin. 
• Eligibility : Applicants must be U.S. citizens committed to military service. Academically, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and meet all other requirements. Additionally, the average MCAT score for scholarship recipients is 509, so you should aim for a score of 509 or higher. Applicants must also be fit to join the military, so checking your eligibility requirements for the Navy , Coast Guard, Air Force , Marine Corps, or Army is essential. 
• Deadline: Rolling application (no deadline). 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : The HPSP scholarship focuses on academic excellence and military fitness. It’s crucial then that you concentrate on keeping your GPA and MCAT scores high and your physical fitness sharp to be a competitive applicant.

Medical School Merit Scholarships

Many med school scholarships are set up around merit. These scholarships are not necessarily associated with specific colleges but are competitive nonetheless. Below we have included an example of a competitive merit-based scholarship. 

The Inspira Advantage MED Scholarship

• Amount : $1,000+ for tutoring or guidance services 
• Application Process : To begin, applicants must follow Inspira Education on social media (Youtube, Facebook, or Instagram). Their application package must include a two-minute video answering a few questions (listed on the website) and a 250-word personal essay discussing the applicant’s identity. Finally, applicants must complete Inspira’s Google application form, where they can submit both their video and 250-word essay. 
• Eligibility : Anyone can apply.
• Deadline : November 15th (Fall) or May 15th (Spring)
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : When answering the application questions, focus on the impact you will make on your community and society by becoming a physician. Inspira is interested in understanding your unique personality, so don’t be afraid to be as authentic as possible. Talk about the thoughtful and impactful ways you will use this scholarship if awarded. 

There are also merit-based scholarships associated with particular colleges. School-specific merit scholarships are typically highly competitive, meaning that most colleges only grant them to a handful of students. 

Below, we have listed some merit-based scholarships and their affiliated schools.

Twenty-First Century Scholars Program (Perelman School of Medicine, UPenn) 

• Amount : full tuition. 
• Application Process: All students accepted into UPenn’s Perelman School of Medicine are automatically considered for this scholarship.  
• Eligibility: There are 34 scholarship spots awarded to students who display outstanding academic achievements and unique life experiences. UPenn is looking for students who demonstrate leadership and authenticity. 
• Deadline: No deadline; automatic consideration upon acceptance.
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship: While focusing on your academics is important, don’t forget about the importance of life experiences. Academic excellence will inevitably make you a strong contender for this scholarship. Still, things like clinical experiences, research work, volunteer experiences, clubs, and hobbies will help you stand out on a personal level.

Ranch Family Leadership Scholarship (Duke)

• Amount : Full tuition, fees, transportation, and allowances for living expenses.  
• Application Process : All students accepted into Duke’s School of Medicine are automatically considered for this scholarship. 
• Eligibility : Duke offers this scholarship to an incoming first-year med student who has displayed academic excellence and a serious commitment to the medical profession.
• Deadline : No deadline; automatic consideration upon acceptance.
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Prioritize academics and clinic and research experience. Duke’s Ranch Family Leadership Scholarship wants someone who has made a dedicated effort to become a physician and has the experience and grades to show it. Volunteer and work within the medical community to distinguish yourself.   

The Dean’s Tuition Scholarship (Duke)

• Amount : Full tuition.  
• Eligibility : Duke offers this scholarship to incoming med students with academic excellence and diverse backgrounds. Diversity factors range from life experiences to demographics to individual characteristics that single students out as people who will bring a unique perspective to Duke. 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Ensure you have a diverse resume and authentic personal essay. While academic excellence is considered, being able to express your unique personal experiences and individuality is fundamental to attaining this scholarship. Be sure to emphasize how your interests, hobbies, experiences, and lifestyle make you the special person you are. 

Robert W. Woodruff Fellowships (Emory University School of Medicine)  

• Amount : Full tuition and a four-year stipend during studies.  
• Application Process : All students accepted into Emory University’s School of Medicine are automatically considered for this scholarship. 
• Eligibility : Emory offers this scholarship to four first-year med students and two MD/Ph.D. students who have displayed outstanding academic achievement, strength of character, impressive leadership and communication skills, a strong motivation for medicine, and creativity. 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Focus on being authentically you during your application process to Emory. This scholarship is about strength of character as much as academic excellence, so don’t be afraid to take on leadership roles, find clinical and research positions, and engage wholeheartedly in your hobbies (particularly ones related to the medical field). This will show Emory both your character and your commitment to medicine. 

Vanderbilt Merit-Based Scholarship (Vanderbilt University School of Medicine)  

• Amount : 75% of the total tuition amount.  
• Application Process : All students accepted into Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine are automatically considered for this scholarship. The office of MD Admissions is responsible for awarding this scholarship.
• Eligibility : Vanderbilt offers this scholarship to all incoming med students, national and international alike. There is little information regarding eligibility. 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Focus on your academics. Since this is a merit-based scholarship, high GPA and MCAT scores will be your distinguisher. If you are struggling with either of these, there are some excellent online tutoring resources to help boost your marks.  

Medical School Scholarships for Minority Students

Some organizations offer scholarships for minority students who want to attend med school. Think about your family history, where you intend to practice medicine, and your socioeconomic background. These things, along with your goals and aspirations, may make you a perfect candidate for one of the following scholarships.

Minority Scholars Award (AMA)  

• Amount : $10,000. 
• Application Process : To apply, applicants must submit their transcripts, resume, letters of recommendation, and a financial statement completed by the UCSF Financial Aid Office. In addition to this, applicants must submit a one-page personal essay explaining their medical career goals. For more details, check out AMA’s application process .
• Eligibility : This scholarship is awarded to minority students (African-American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native, and Hispanic/Latino) to promote diversity in medicine. 
• Deadline : N/A
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Write your personal essay emphasizing the importance of diversity in the medical community. Highlight how your presence in the medical field is both necessary and essential. 

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans  

• Amount : $90,000.
• Application Process : The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans fund 30 students going into graduate or professional studies. To apply, students must submit proof of enrollment, proof of status (your own and your parents), proof of academic standing, and two personal essays. Applications are submitted through an online portal .  
• Eligibility : The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans were set up to fund immigrants and children of immigrants in the U.S. The applicant can be American through birth, naturalization, adoption, or green card. However, both applicants’ birth parents must have been non-US citizens born outside of the US and ineligible for US citizenship at the time of their births. • Deadline : October 26, 2024
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Begin writing your personal essays early. By beginning your essays early, you can edit, revise, and rewrite to craft stronger essays. You will also be able to ask others for editing help too, including professors or mentors. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship website also provides a guide to writing essays so be sure to check that out. 

Scholarships for Black Medical Students

As mentioned, some scholarships are set up specifically for minority groups in the U.S. Below, we have listed a few such scholarships available to Black American medical students.   

Empire State Medical Association Scholarship Award (The National Medical Fellowships, NY)  

• Amount : $2,500. 
• Application Process : To apply, students must visit The National Medical Fellowships’ online application portal , where they will need to upload a personal statement specific to this scholarship as well as the following: 
• Transcripts; 
• Any required personal documents (birth certificate, passport, etc.); 
• Letter(s) of recommendation; and,
• Any required financial and academic documents (see general documentation requirements ). 
• Eligibility : Applicants must be African-American and enrolled in an accredited New York City medical school for the coming academic year. Applicants will be required to provide proof of acceptance.   
• Deadline : April 8, 2024
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Utilize your lived experiences. When writing your personal statement or contacting recommenders for your letters, do not be afraid to be vulnerable and radically honest about your lived experience as a person of color. Let this be an opportunity for your voice to shine. 

United Negro College Fund (UNCF)  

• Amount : Varies; over $100,000,000 is available annually to applicants through different programs.  
• Application Process : UNCF offers numerous scholarship opportunities for American med students of color. One such scholarship is UNCF’s The United Health Foundation Diversity in Health Care Scholarship .  To see the many different scholarships available, check out UNCF’s website .
• Eligibility : While different scholarships have different eligibility requirements, UNCF set up their scholarships to provide financial aid to Black American med students.  
• Deadline : Varies per scholarship. 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : While many of our previous tips have emphasized your individuality, there is incredible power in explaining how your lived experience, as a student of color, has been a shared one. Don’t forget this when you write your personal essays.    

Many organizations offer more than one scholarship to Black American students, such as the Brown Medical and Educational (MAE) Foundation . While only one of MAE’s scholarships is specific to med school, they offer a few others to African-American students going into college that may be applicable.        

Scholarships for Chinese-American Medical Students

If you are a Chinese-American medical student, some great funding resources are available to help you cover the cost of med school. 

The Chinese American Physicians Society hosts an annual scholarship of $2,000-$5,000 for students going into osteopathic medicine. Applicants do not have to be Chinese, but they must be particularly focused on serving the Chinese community in the U.S. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2024.

CAMS Scholarship (Chinese American Medical Society)

• Amount : $5,000
• A CAMS application form; 
• Applicant's Current Curriculum Vitae;
• A Letter from the student’s Dean, verifying the applicant is in good standing with their institution; 
• Two letters of recommendation.

• Eligibility : Applicants must be first-, second-, or third-year med or dentistry students and current or pending CAMS Student members. CAMS does not mention ethnicity, though it is implied that all applicants must be Chinese-American.      
• Deadline : March 31, 2024
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Develop strong relationships with both your recommenders and, if possible, your Dean. If you can cultivate a strong working relationship with these three people, you’ll be more likely to receive positive and impactful letters of recommendation. 

Scholarships for Native American Medical Students

There are many scholarship opportunities available to Native American med students. One excellent online resource is Affordable Colleges Online (ACO), which has a full state-by-state list of Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). TCUs offer unique scholarships and learning opportunities for Native American students seeking higher education. 

Aside from ACO, we have also listed a few individual scholarships below. 

Health Professions Scholarship (Indian Health Services)

• Amount : Varies; the Indian Health Service (IHS) offers three different scholarship opportunities to Native American med students. 
• Application Process : When applying to any of the IHS scholarships, students have to submit their official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and an applicant essay. These documents will be assessed and scored for one cumulative score. Your cumulative score will then be ranked against other applicant scores.    
• Eligibility : In order to be eligible for any of IHS’ scholarships, students must have proof of both tribal/village membership and American citizenship. Applicants must also have a high school degree and a minimum GPA of 2.0. Check out the rest of Indian Health Service’s scholarship requirements to see if you are eligible for application.     
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : In your applicant essay, emphasize how you will use your med school degree to serve Native American communities across the U.S. Write about how your interests in medicine and career goals will help American Indians and Alaska Natives. 

Gerald D. Peet Scholarship 2023-2024 (NativeForward Scholar Funds)

• Amount : Needs-based amount.
• Application Process : Unclear. The NativeForward Scholar Funds website has listed contact information for any questions regarding their application.   
• Eligibility : To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a full-time accredited college pursuing a degree in medicine. Applicants must also commit to two years of post-graduate medical work serving Native American communities.  
• Deadline : June 1, 2024
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : While this scholarship has many vagaries, one clear thing is that their ideal candidate is committed to serving Native American communities after their medical degree. Emphasize this in your application letter and/or personal essay. 

NativeForward Scholars Fund has a long list of other scholarships specifically available to native students. Not all are for med students, though, so be sure to read through the listings carefully. 

Scholarships for Hispanic Medical Students

If you are a Hispanic med student, many scholarships are available to help you cover the cost of med school tuition. We have compiled a few below, as well as some excellent online resources that you can use to find more opportunities. 

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF)  

• Amount : $500-$5,000, as well as career services, mentorship opportunities, and more. 
• Application Process : HSF offers 10,000 of these scholarships to Hispanic American med students. Students must apply online via the HSF portal by creating a profile and uploading all required documents. Applicants must submit state-based financial aid forms as well as proof of enrollment. To apply for an HSF scholarship, visit their website . 
• Eligibility : HSF applicants must be American and Hispanic or of Hispanic descent. They must have a 3.0 GPA for high school students or 2.5 GPA for college and grad students.     
• Deadline : Feb 15, 2024
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : The HSF’s scholarship seems to be both a merit- and needs-based scholarship. Therefore, you must explain why you need this scholarship, how it would be helpful, and what it would allow you to do for yourself and your community.

The Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship (NHHF)

• Amount : $2,000 to $5,000
• A two-page personal statement;
• A PDF letter of recommendation (one); 
• Proof of citizenship;
• Proof of enrolment;
• Unofficial transcript; and,
• Current curriculum vitae (education, employment, extracurricular activities, awards).
• Eligibility : To be eligible for application, students must have a 3.0 GPA and proof of full-time enrolment in an accredited American medical institution. While applicants must be American citizens, they are not required to be Hispanic; however, they must have an affinity for the health of Hispanic communities.
• Deadline : Sep 15, 2024
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Aside from exceptional academic achievements, we recommend that you work or volunteer within Hispanic medical communities —the more of a leadership role you can take on, the better. NHHF wants to see that you are committed to genuinely helping Hispanic-American communities.

The Latino Medical Student Association National Scholarship (LMSA) 

• Amount : $500. 
• Application Process : The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) will award ten med students $500. To apply, applicants must submit their proof of enrollment, transcripts, two short essays (a personal statement and a short-answer essay), and the LMSA application form. Applicants must also be current and paying members of LMSA. Students must submit their applications through the LMSA online portal. 
• Eligibility : To be eligible, applicants do not have to be Hispanic or Latino/a/x; however, they have to be committed to improving the health and safety of Hispanic and Latino/a/x communities in the U.S.    
• Deadline : August 1st, 2024 (expected)
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Get involved with Hispanic, Latina/o/x, and other underserved communities around you. LMSA wants to see that you are committed to supporting the health, care, and education of Hispanic, Latina/o/x, and other underserved communities. Volunteer, work, or join a club to get involved.  

The JP Sánchez LGBTQ+ Health & Leadership Award (LMSA)

• Amount : $500+. 
• Application Process : Students must be current members of The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) before applying. Applicants must submit a personal statement, proof of enrolment, resume, and the LMSA application form to apply. Students must submit their applications through the LMSA online portal.
• Eligibility : Though applicants do not have to be LGBTQ+, Hispanic, or Latino/a/x, they must show their desire to work with and care for LGBTQ+, Hispanic, and Latino/a/x communities across the U.S.  
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : LMSA gives applicants the option of submitting a letter of reference. We always recommend doing this, as it will only be a boon to your application. If your recommender is involved with LGBTQ+, Hispanic, or Latino/a/x groups, this is even better, as it will speak to your commitment to these communities. 

Scholarships for Medical Students With Disabilities 

If you are a med student living with a disability, there are many scholarship opportunities available to you. These scholarships range in terms of disabilities, from physical to autoimmune. We have included a variety of scholarships below, but be sure to do your research to find the scholarships that best cater to you.  

The AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability (AAHD)  

• Amount : Varies; maximum available funding is $1,000. 
• Application Process : In order to apply for the American Association on Health and Disability’s (AAHD) scholarship, applicants must submit a two-page personal statement, two letters of recommendation, most recent unofficial transcripts, and proof of disability. All students must apply through the AAHD online portal.
• Eligibility : Applicants must be American citizens with a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act and enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies. Applicants do not necessarily have to be studying health or medicine; however, preference is given to those students.  
• Deadline : March 1st, 2024.
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Prioritize community service and/or volunteer experiences. While the AAHD mentions that preference will be given to students studying medicine, they also give preference to students with volunteer and community service experiences. Bonus if your volunteer work is in health services.  

The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is another excellent scholarship for med students with a disability. Specifically, it is available to students who live with the following inflammatory diseases: 

• Ankylosing spondylitis; 
• Crohn’s disease;
• Hidradenitis suppurativa; 
• Juvenile idiopathic arthritis; 
• Psoriasis; 
• Psoriatic arthritis; 
• Rheumatoid arthritis;
• Ulcerative colitis; and, 

Recipients are awarded up to $15,000, regardless of financial need.

The AbbVie Immunology Scholarship is currently closed; however, it will reopen in November 2023, so be sure to mark this date in your calendar. 

Another excellent scholarship is the John Lepping Memorial Scholarship , which is available to students with disabilities. The scholarship is for up to $5,000. Like the AbbVie Scholarship, t he John Lepping Memorial Scholarship currently has a deadline of June 1, 2024 . 

To be eligible, students must:

• Provide proof of disability;
• Demonstrate academic achievement; and,
• Be a resident of New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania.

To apply, applicants must submit their application form and other required materials to apply.

Scholarships for Jewish Medical Students

Religion is another possible determinant for scholarships. In this case, there are many scholarships and awards available to Jewish students going into or already studying medicine. Below are just a few of these kinds of scholarships. 

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Vocational Service Scholarship (JVS Chicago)

• Amount : Varies; up to $4,000 available.
• Two professional and/or academic letters of reference with the accompanying JVS Letter of Reference Form;
• Applicant IRS Forms filed for the two previous years;
• Students under the age of 26 and/or married students must submit parents’ and/or spouse's/partner’s IRS Forms filed for the two previous years;
• Proof of tuition and fee costs;
• Proof all outstanding student loans; and,
• Official academic transcript (if in school, from present school; if not in school, from the most recent school attended). 
• Eligibility : All applicants must be Jewish and a Chicago local, either born or currently living and working in Chicago. Applicants must be either planning on studying in or moving back to Chicago after their medical degree. Check out JVS Chicago’s full list of requirements . 
• Deadline : February 1, 2024 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship : Be honest and open about your financial needs. JVS has placed high importance on understanding their applicants' financial background, meaning their scholarship is needs- and merit-based. Be honest then about how helpful this JVS scholarship will be to you. 

Aside from individual scholarships, there are great organizations that offer more than one scholarship to Jewish students. For example, the Jewish Federation of Northeast New York offers several grants and scholarships. To view their award opportunities, check their academic scholarships page .

The Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland (JFSA) is another such example. JFSA offers multiple awards to Jewish students in the greater Cleveland area, including the Alumni and Friends of JFSA College Financial Aid Program Scholarship . Scholarships for LGBTQ+ Medical Students

There are numerous scholarships available to American LGBTQ+ med students. The Pride Foundation , for example, offers a ton of awards annually to improve the educational experience of LGBTQ+ students and activists. In fact, with just one application , eligible candidates can apply to over 60 Price Foundation scholarships.

Leadership Scholarship (Women in Medicine)  

• Amount : $5,000. 
• Application Process : To apply, students must submit a Leadership Scholarship Application form, two letters of recommendation, and their resume. See Women in Medicine’s application form and requirement list for all other eligibility requirements.  
• Eligibility : Women in Medicine offers two scholarships to LGBTQ+ female students enrolled in their first, second, or third year of med school. All applicants must have been already enrolled in med school for six months before applying. 
• Deadline : March 15, 2024 (expected)
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship: Get involved in your LGBTQ+ community. Giving back to your community through volunteer leadership roles will be a massive boon to your application for the Women in Medicine Leadership Scholarship. Plus, you can foster a relationship with a potential future recommender through volunteering or working.   

Sexual orientation is not the only factor when it comes to some LGBTQ+ scholarships. The Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of AIDS activist Pedro Zamora. The scholarship aims to support the academic careers of young activists. The scholarship awards up to $5,000 to applicants who meet the criteria. You can apply through ScholarsApp here . 

Scholarships for Women in Medicine

Numerous scholarships are available if you are an American woman already enrolled in or planning to attend med school. For example, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) offers multiple scholarships for women in medicine. Their awards include the Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship , the Dr. Francis Anthony Beneventi Medical Scholarship , and more.

The Lynn Adamson Memorial Scholarship (Women Health Care Executives)  

• Amount : $5,000 with a one-year membership to the WHCE .  
• Application Process : To apply, applicants must submit their resume, current unofficial transcript, a letter of reference, and a WHCE application form to the WHCE email. Outstanding academic achievements are crucial for a successful application. 
• Eligibility : To be eligible, applicants must be graduate-level female students residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. See the WHCE website for more eligibility criteria .
• Deadline : February 27, 2024 
• Inspira’s Tips for Securing this Scholarship: Try to take on leadership roles during your undergraduate degree. The WHCE emphasizes the need for their scholarship winner to display leadership and integrity. Try to take an active role in any of your volunteer, clinical, and/or research experiences. 

Peace Corps and Military Scholarships

Finally, the Peace Corps and the U.S. Military are other institutions that offer scholarships to med students who have completed a certain amount of service. Volunteering through the Peace Corps may make you eligible for the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program scholarships.

The U.S. military offers programs for students who have enrolled in the army. Most programs pay for one year of school for each service year.

1. How Many Medical Scholarships Can I Apply for?

You can apply for as many medical scholarships as you’d like. It’s a good idea to apply for as many as possible, even the small ones. Smaller scholarships often have less competition and may be easier to get.

Medical school scholarships are a great way to cut down the costs of medical school. With the steady rise of medical school tuition in the last two decades, the national average graduating debt in the US is around US$200,000 and CAD$100,000 in Canada. Many students wonder how to pay for medical school to minimize debt and save some money. In this blog, we'll give you an overview of the types of medical school scholarships available to you and provide a list of the top 50 medical school scholarships. There are a number of scholarships available for students with excellent academic records, particular research interests, or even for those who identify as part of a minority group. Some towns and cities have scholarships for local students and many universities have their own institutional scholarships. 

Let’s look at six types of scholarships you may be eligible for if you are planning to attend medical school in the United States, as well as some scholarships available for students in Canada. 

Federal Scholarships

The federal governments in the US and Canada fund some scholarships for eligible medical students. 

For instance, you can obtain a full scholarship from the US federal government if you agree to serve in the military or as a doctor in a region of the country with very few physicians. 

Go to medical school for free by serving in the US Army , the Air Force , or the Navy . You can apply for a 4-year or a 3-year scholarship. You must serve a minimum of 3 years as an active duty staff physician, or 1 year for each year of scholarship awarded. 

While in medical school, you must focus on your studies and are not required to wear uniform. 

These scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis, so you must apply as soon as possible in the fall before attending med school. If you are already in med school and want to apply for a 3-year scholarship, apply in your first year. 

2. The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program ( NHSC SP ) 

With this program, you can study for free when you commit to serve in an area with shortages of primary care providers. It can be a particular geographical area, a specific population group or certain facilities such as federal and state correctional institutions, mental hospitals, or Indian Health Facilities, among others. 

You must commit to serving for a minimum of two years of full-time service in exchange for a full year of scholarship support. You would receive a maximum of four years of support. 

Each medical school has its own financial aid packages for its incoming and current students, so make sure you check with the Financial Aid Office what scholarships, bursaries, and grants may be available to you. 

Although there are many programs based on financial need, there are also funding opportunities based on merit. There are medical schools in the US that award scholarships to students with excellent academic backgrounds and other exceptional characteristics, such as leadership, empathy, community involvement, and responsibility. Eligible students usually have GPAs of 3.7 and above and MCAT scores in the 95th percentile or above.

Let's look at some examples. 

3. Twenty-First Century Scholars Program - Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

UPenn's medical school has two types of scholarships. One is needs-based and another one is merit based. Here we are going to look at the Twenty-First Century Scholars Program, which recognizes student excellence.

4. Merit-Based Scholarship - David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California—Los Angeles

UCLA's medical school offers merit-based scholarships to 25% of its medical students.

5. Robert W. Woodruff Fellowships - Emory University School of Medicine

Every year, Emory University School of Medicine awards Woodruff Fellowships to 4 first-year medical and 2 MD/PhD program students. 

6. Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Merit-based scholarships are awarded in various amounts as funds allow. 

Almost half (49%) of the most recent class at Vanderbilt School of Medicine graduated without medical school debt, thanks in part to their scholarship program. Vanderbilt offers both merit scholarships and need-based scholarships. 

8. Duke University School of Medicine

Duke University School of Medicine offers scholarships to entering students from three different funds based on academic excellence: Rauch Family Leadership Scholarship, The Dean's Tuition Scholarship, and Fullerton Medical Scholarships.

9. Oliver Goldsmith, M.D. Scholarship

Oliver Goldsmith M.D. Scholarships, awarded by the Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) Residency Program, seeks to encourage diversity in healthcare by celebrating students’ efforts to support the healthcare of underserved communities.

One mistake many premed students make is focusing only on national or large scholarships that are extremely competitive and hard to get. Unbeknownst to them, there may be money to grab in their hometowns. 

It is not uncommon for local high schools, rotary clubs, women's professional organizations, hospitals, and nonprofits to grant medical school scholarships. 

Although these scholarships tend to offer small amounts, if you combine a few of them, they can be of great help in paying for medical school. 

10. Allegheny County Medical Society (ACMS) Medical Student Scholarship

The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society provides the Allegheny County Medical Society Medical Student Scholarship for medical students who reside in Allegheny County. 

11. Maryland Graduate and Professional School Scholarship Program

This scholarship program from the state of Maryland, is available for students seeking a degree in graduate and professional programs in dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and veterinary medicine. 

12. Dr. James L. Hutchinson and Evelyn Ribbs Hutchinson Medical School Scholarship

This scholarship is for students who demonstrate personal motivation for excellence in both character and academic achievement. The scholarship committee evaluates leadership, community involvement, and concern for others. Only one scholarship is awarded per year and previous applicants may reapply.

13. Dr. U.R. Plante Medical Scholarship

This scholarship for residents of Adirondack in New York was started in honor of Dr. U.R. Plante by his family. He practiced medicine from 1916 to 1972. His family hoped that the students who received the scholarship would have the same compassion and concern for their patients as Dr. Plante did.

14. DCMS Scholarship

The DuPage County Medical Society offers medical scholarships for permanent residents of DuPage County in Illinois. The scholarship is intended to encourage residents to practice and advance medicine in this area.

15. Muhlenberg Foundation Scholarship

The Muhlenberg Foundation offers two scholarships for residents of Union, Somerset, and Middlesex counties in New Jersey: the Medical Staff Scholarship and the Howard G. Lapsley Scholarship. These are awards to benefit medical students in financial need who aim to practice medicine in local communities.

16. Wellsford and Mildred Clark Scholarship

Created in 1988, this scholarship helps cover the cost of the last year of medical school. It is administered by the Waterbury Medical Association for Connecticut residents with an excellent academic record and stellar resume.

17. Physicians of Tomorrow Awards - American Medical Association

The Physicians of Tomorrow Awards provide financial assistance to medical students facing medical school debt. There are 10 different scholarships (awards) under the Physicians of Tomorrow umbrella.

This annual scholarship is for students pursuing careers in healthcare in accredited, nonprofit colleges/universities in the United States.

19. Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships

Five scholarships are given every year to outstanding students entering their third year of medical school. The students must have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care, as well as leadership initiative in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. 

20. The Leopold Schepp Foundation

The Leopold Schepp Foundation awards educational scholarships to students who demonstrate fine character, academic excellence, financial need, compassion, a commitment to volunteerism, and a goal to benefit humankind. 

21. The WCI Medical School

The White Coat Investor's purpose is to “help those who wear the white coat get a fair shake” and The White Coat Investor Scholarship is a way for the entire WCI Community to “pay it forward.” The Scholarship has no endowment fund, so the scholarship money is raised anew every year. The purpose of the scholarship is to directly reduce the indebtedness of a few students and to promote financial literacy in professional schools. 

Board Vitals is offering a scholarship for two medical students with a strong academic record and a demonstrated passion for innovations in medicine.

23. ACLS Scholarship for Healthcare Providers

Pacific Medical Training is offering a stipend to aspiring healthcare professionals with an interest in emergency medical care. Their key requirement is an essay about emergency care which will be reviewed by a committee.

24. DLE Lawyers Video Scholarship for Aspiring Medical Professionals

DLE Lawyers are car accident lawyers based out of Miami, Florida. They offer the DLE Lawyers Video Scholarship for Aspiring Medical Professionals with the view to support medical professionals, who are often the ones who help to heal and save accident victims.

25. DAR Medical Scholarships

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) foundation offers three scholarships for medical students:  

• Dr. Francis Anthony Beneventi Medical Scholarship 
• Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship 
• Leslie Andree Hanna Medical Scholarship

These are aimed towards providing financial help to students with stellar academic records. 

26. Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program

The Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program offers a range of networking, mentoring and career development opportunities to future leaders of family medicine, including scholarships to help reduce some of the debt incurred towards medical school tuition. Pisacano Scholars get access to a lot of educational programs designed to build their critical thinking, leadership, and healthcare skills in the arena of family medicine. They also get the chance to network with peers and current successful family medicine practitioners. 

27. Japanese Medical Society of America

The Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) is a nonprofit organization in the New York region that supports the Japanese and Japanese-American communities with different health initiatives. 

JMSA provides scholarships for students and postgraduates in the medical field who demonstrate academic excellence and service to the Japanese community. 

Scholarships for Minority Groups

As part of their efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the medical profession, many foundations and professional associations have scholarship programs for individuals who come from certain countries or who identify themselves as part of a minority group in the US, such as Asians or Hispanics, among others.

28. United Health Foundation/NMF Diverse Medical Scholars Program

This program is a renewable scholarship that awards 38 qualified 2nd-4th year medical students in the US, who are members of an underrepresented minority group, and can demonstrate leadership and commitment to underserved communities. Recipients must complete a 200-hour self-directed community health project with a community site that they choose. 

29. Chinese-American Physicians Society

The CAPS Scholarships are awarded every year to medical students in the US, based on their academic achievements, financial needs, community service records, and essays. CAPS gives preference to students willing to serve the Chinese communities after graduation. 

30. Vietnamese American Medical Association of Greater Houston

The Vietnamese American Medical Association of Greater Houston (VAMA-GH) is a non-profitorganization for physicians of Vietnamese heritage who live and practice in the Greater Houstonarea. VAMA-GH offers scholarships for medical students to foster interest in serving the Vietnamese American community. 

31. The Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship

NHHF established the National Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship program and its first Gala in New York City for medical, nursing, dental, public health, and pharmacy, and health policy students with outstanding academic records, leadership, and commitment to serving Hispanics. They award between 15 to 20 scholarships every year. 

32. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans program is intended for immigrants and children of immigrants in the United States. The purpose is to honor the contributions of continuing generations of immigrants and refugees to the United States. 

33. National Medical Fellowship Scholarships

The National Medical Fellowship (NMF) is an organization that aims to help aspiring physicians and healthcare workers from underrepresented communities so they can contribute in the field of medicine. They offer a number of scholarships and awards. They can be both need- and merit- based. The funding for these scholarships comes from many different foundations as well as philanthropic individuals. Some of their notable scholarships include the Alliant Health Solutions/NMF Alzheimer’s or Related Dementia Care Scholarship, Carl H. & Thelma C. Caison, Sr. Scholarship, Hugh J. Andersen Memorial Scholarship Program, and more. NMF scholarships are most likely to be awarded to those with a stellar record of community service and great leadership potential.

34. Dr Richard Allen Williams Scholarship

This scholarship was created to encourage diversity in medicine and eliminate healthcare disparities, specifically in the field of cardiology, medical research, and academic medicine. Apart from academic prowess, applicants are judged based on their commitment to the promotion of health for the African-American community, participation in  extracurricular activities , and demonstrated research skills.

35. Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarship

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) selects 10,000 Hispanic students from different programs, including medical students, as scholars every year. These students are eligible for the HSF scholarships, but they can also avail other support services and resources such as mentorship, career services, leadership development, wellness training, and more.

36. Health Professions Scholarship

The Indian Health Service, or the IHS, awards the Health Professions Scholarships to American Indian and Alaska Native students enrolled in professional courses in health care fields. This program was started in 1978 with the aim to support and place health care professionals of Native heritage in the underserved American Indian health programs. They are looking for passionate medical students who are dedicated to improving health care in their communities. Students will receive financial help in return for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health program in their applicable professional field.

37. Brown Medical and Education Healthcare Scholarship

The Brown Medical and Education foundation offers multiple scholarships, including their Healthcare Scholarship to help support the medical costs for students committed to improving healthcare in underrepresented communities.

38. JVS Scholarships

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago provides funds to offset the tuition costs of meritorious Jewish students in need of financial assistance, completing their study in medicine. 

39. CAMS Scholarship Program

The Chinese American Medical Society, or CAMS, offers grants to meritorious Chinese American medical students in need of financial aid.

Gender-Based Scholarships

In this category, you will find medical school scholarships for women and members of the LGBTQ community.

The mission of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is to advance women in medicine, advocate for equity, and ensure excellence in health care. The AMWA’s scholarship and loan program began in 1925 at the Annual Meeting in Atlantic City with two gifts, one of $1000, and one of $500. This became the start of the Scholarship Fund.

Women in Medicine (WIM) awards two LGBTQ Leadership Scholarships to female medical students who demonstrate leadership in LGBT-related organizations during school. 

42. Zonta Club of Washington 

The Zonta Club of Washington, D.C. awarded the first medical scholarship in 1965 and has awarded over $1.3 million to deserving recipients. From the estate of Dr. Edith SeVille Coale, the Zonta Club awards scholarships to women medical students every year. 

43. Point Scholarship

Point Foundation (Point) grants higher education scholarships to LGBTQ students. Recipients are paired with a mentor and participate in leadership development programs and events. Applicants are assessed by their track record of leadership and community involvement, academic achievement, work for the betterment of the LGBTQ community, and financial need. 

44. AAUW Selected Professions Fellowships

AAUW awards Selected Professions Fellowships to women completing their fellowship year in specific degree programs where women’s participation has historically been low. This program was established in 1970 and over the years, it has expanded into include many different professions. Medical students in their third and fourth year are eligible to apply.

45. M.A. Cartland Shackford Medical Fellowship

Wellesley College offers the M.A. Cartland Shackford Medical Fellowship for medical students with a focus on general practice, not psychiatry. It is based on merit as well as need.

46. Dr. Marie E. Zakrzewski Medical Scholarship

The Dr. Marie E. Zakrzewski Medical Scholarship provides financial aid to women of Polish ancestry in completing their MD.

McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal has numerous scholarships and awards for new students, research awards for undergraduate medicine, needs-based scholarships, bursaries and loans, and undergraduate medicine prizes and medals. 

One of the programs for entering students is the Anjna and Jogindar Majhail Scholarship. 

48. Canadian Medical Association's 150th Anniversary Award - University of Toronto

The CMA Foundation provides annual funding to every medical school in Canada to help students with financial need. The awards recognize student leaders who demonstrate the values of professionalism, including honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, accountability, collaboration and a commitment to self-improvement. 

49. Affiliation Scholarships - University of British Columbia

These merit-based scholarships look at academic achievement, community involvement, or leadership. Students must be connected to a club, trade union, company, geographic region, or demographic group. 

50. University of Ottawa Admission Scholarship

First, examine your current financial situation and commit to paying off your undergraduate loans and credit card balances before entering medical school. Start by tapping into your personal network, such as family, or other benefactors. Then apply for scholarships and grants, which is free money you don’t have to pay back. Once you’ve tried these options and still require funding, look at student loans, such as federal and private loans.

The AAMC has an online searchable database where you can find detailed information about state and federal programs available to medical students.

If the scholarships and grants you obtain are not enough to pay tuition and costs, you may have to apply for a student loan. Federal loans have better repayment terms and interest rates are fixed and lower than private loans.

Yes. Although many of the medical school scholarships listed here require applicants to be US citizens or residents, others are available for all entering students, no matter their nationality.

Most scholarships are for amounts that only cover part or the costs of attending med school, but there are some full tuition scholarships, such as NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s scholarship program and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Most medical school scholarships do require that you are either an accepted incoming student or a current full-time medical students. Institutional scholarship programs are available only for matriculants.

You can increase your chances of obtaining a merit-based scholarship if you can demonstrate academic excellence (high GPA and test scores), leadership, community involvement, and strong letters of recommendation. These are the things you should consider years in advance and work on during your undergraduate program, so you’ll be in a better position to apply for a scholarship when entering medical school.

Scholarships and Grants

In keeping with our pledge to make medical school affordable, we award partial scholarships to one-quarter of our incoming medical students.

We base these scholarships on academic merit and/or demonstrated need. If you remain in good academic standing, we will renew your award annually.

Internal Scholarships

External scholarships, graduate opportunity program.

The Graduate Opportunity Program provides tuition scholarships to students who graduated from an Educational Opportunity Program, Higher Education Opportunity Program or CUNY Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge program in New York State.

F. Edward Hébert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship

The F. Edward Hébert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program covers 100 percent of your tuition—plus required books, equipment and most academic fees—in exchange for a year of active duty service to the U.S. Army for every year you receive the scholarship. Your minimum service obligation is two years.

Lee Foundation Psychiatric Scholarship

Medical students apply during their third or fourth year of medical school. Priority given to students from Western New York entering a psychiatry residency at the Jacobs School.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

The NHSC Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students pursuing careers in primary care. In return, you commit to providing care to communities in need for two to four years, once you graduate and complete your training.

National Medical Fellowships

Medical students from underrepresented minority groups receive these need-based scholarships. Several different types of awards exist; they recognize such attributes as leadership, community service and a commitment to care for underserved populations.

Orleans County/Lyndonville Foundation

Medical students apply during their third or fourth year of medical school.  Priority given to students from Orleans County, but open to any Western New York resident who pledges to work and live in Orleans County for minimum of five years after they complete their training.

Pisicano Scholars Leadership Program

This program awards scholarships to medical students committed to practicing family medicine. It reimburses a portion of your debt during your fourth year of medical school, with the remaining funds distributed over your residency. Pisicano scholars receive up to $7,000 a year for up to four years.

Seneca Diabetes Foundation

Medical students may apply in their first year of medical school. Scholarships are open to Seneca Nation students who are planning to enter a primary care specialty residency at the Jacobs School. Students will pledge to work on the Seneca Nation reservation for a minimum of five years after they complete their training. Students will be mentored by Seneca Diabetes Foundation officials during medical school and residency.

Economically Disadvantaged First Professional Study Program (EDPS)

This program provides partial tuition waivers to full-time medical students who are determined to have exceptional need. New York State and participating educational institutions fund the program.

Chancellor’s Club Fellowships recognize our most academically superior doctoral and MFA students — those who exhibit outstanding promise as scholars, researchers, and public leaders. Nominated students must be first-generation college students, with neither parent having received a four-year degree. Nominations are made by Associate Deans for scholars in their respective schools.

Miguel Velez Scholarship

The Miguel Velez Scholarship provides financial support to graduate students who demonstrate outstanding past academic achievement as well as future promise, have financial need, and are citizens and residents of a Latin American country. Preference is given to citizens of Colombia.

James Harvey Scholar

The James Harvey Scholar award provides financial support to graduate students who demonstrate outstanding past academic achievement as well as future promise, have financial need, and are completing a publishable thesis or dissertation on homosexuality or the life or works of James Harvey.

Otto W. Shaler Scholarship

The Otto W. Shaler Scholarship provides financial support to international graduate students who have financial need, and who demonstrate outstanding past academic achievement as well as future promise. Each school may submit no more than two applications for this award.

Brython Davis Fellowship

Overview: The Brython Davis Fellowship provides financial support to students who demonstrate outstanding past academic achievement as well as future promise, have financial need, are U.S. citizens, and are the child of a service member or veteran of the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps.

La Verne Noyes Fellowship

The La Verne Noyes Fellowship provides financial support to graduate students who demonstrate outstanding past academic achievement as well as future promise, have financial need, are U.S. citizens, and are descendants of World War I U.S. Army or Navy veterans.

Barbara Bell Blake Nursing Scholarship

Alpha Mu Tau is a national honorary fraternity dedicated to promoting clinical laboratory sciences. This includes offering resources to those already in the profession along with assistance to undergraduate students and students seeking advanced credentials like a master’s degree or Ph.D.

Volunteer State Chapter of CLMA Scholarship for Fundamentals of Lab Leadership/Advanced Lab Leadership

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics graciously funded a scholarship to pay full tuition for a limited number of individuals to the Clinical Laboratory Management Association’s (CLMA) Fundamentals of Laboratory Leadership (FoLL) program.

Edward C. Dolbey Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarships

The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Education and Research Fund (E&R Fund) and the honorary  Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity  (AMTF) provide  undergraduate scholarships for students enrolled in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technician, Histotechnology, or Cytotechnology programs.

The E&R Fund also provides  graduate  student scholarships. E&R Fund scholarships are supported by member and industry contributions and bequests, by the Edward C. Dolbey Trust, and by the proceeds of a  silent auction  held at the ASCLS annual meeting. Annually 20–25 undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded, depending on contribution levels and market conditions.

Presentation

Each undergraduate Dolbey scholarship winner is awarded up to  $2,500  for  MLS  and up to $2,000 for  MLT  and each graduate Dolbey scholarship winner up to  $3000 . Recipients are notified by email and are honored at the ASCLS Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony. AMTF scholarship winners are also honored at the AMTF dinner held during the Annual Meeting.

Eligibility for E&R Fund and AMTF Scholarships

• • Scholarship applicants must be a member of ASCLS.
• • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
• • Undergraduate applicants may apply during their final year.
• • Undergraduate applicants must be enrolled in a NAACLS accredited program.
• • Graduate applicants (E&R Fund) must be accepted into or enrolled in an approved Masters or Doctoral program in areas related to Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science including Clinical Laboratory Education or Management.
• • Graduate applicants cannot complete their education before the scholarship is awarded.

Center for Infectious Diseases Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) HealthCorps Fellow Program

Child family health international health scholarships, chateaubriand fellowship program, albert schweitzer fellowship, the david e. rogers student fellowship program, the arnold p. gold foundation student summer fellowship.

This directory includes a variety of international grants and fellowships in biomedical and behavioral research. It provides information about additional funding opportunities available to those in the field of global health research.

This program provides opportunities for physician-in-training scholars during their residency and career physician scholars for 6-week rotations overseas. Program sites vary. In previous years they were in Eritrea, Honduras, South Africa, Uganda, and Vietnam.

The Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship Program in Minority Health Policy is a one-year, full-time program designed to create physician-leaders who will pursue careers in minority health and health policy.

Association of Schools Programs of Public Health (ASPPH)/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship

This fellowship program provides international training opportunities for recent graduates of ASPPH member accredited schools of public health (Master of Public Health and Doctoral level).

GHFP Fellows are recruited for specific positions, working two to four years full time, gaining experience and expertise in global health development. Placements are made both in Washington, DC, and in developing countries.

International Travel Scholarships

Students and resident physician members of the MMS are eligible to apply for grants up to $2,000 to defray the costs of study in another country. The MMS will donate sufficient funds to the Foundation to underwrite five grants annually, although future provisions may be made to invite private or corporate donations to expand the size and/or number of grants. 

Up to $250 of funding is available for current medical student members of the MMS whose projects meet objectives in community and social service, public health activism, and education, or volunteer mentorship activities.

The AMWA provides grants up to $1,000 for assistance with transportation costs (airfare, train fare, etc.) connected with pursuing medical studies in an off-campus setting where the medically-neglected benefit.

This award provides round trip airfare and up to $1,000 toward living expenses for medical students proposing electives in clinical tropical medicine with at least one month at a site endemic for tropical communicable diseases.

The Adell & Hancock Fund Scholarships provide supplemental support to U.S. and international students who are in need of additional funds to carry out their international educational plans.

Sara’s Wish offers scholarships for extraordinary young women committed to making the world a better place by defraying the costs associated with traveling to all areas of the globe.

This award is for outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care. Awardees will have demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of minorities in the United States.

The Program supports one year of mentored clinical research training at a site in resource-limited resource and transitional countries. It  Aalso provides a stipend for an international graduate student to work alongside the U.S. trainee during the clinical research year.   

Fulbright Sscholarships for offer international exchange opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Infectious Diseases Society of America Medical Scholars Program

These Sscholarships are for medical students with mentorship by an Infectious Diseases Society of America IDSA member or fellow. Scholarship activity must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities.

Boren Fellowships Pprovide up to $24,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increase language proficiency. 

CIDRZ HealthCorps Fellow Program is for medical, nursing, or Master of Public Health MPH students who are able to delay their studies for a year; recent graduates who wish to gain international experience; and college graduates with substantial skills or experiences to work in Lusaka, Zambia, for a 10- to 12 month duration.

These Sscholarships to cover Child Family Health International programs, which include: Introduction to Traditional Medicine, India; Cultural Crossroads in Health, Oaxaca, Mexico; and Urban & and Rural Comparative Health in Ecuador. 

Chateaubriand Fellowships are for American MD or PhD students to conduct research in a French laboratory for a six 6 to twelve month period.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is for third-year medical students to spend three 3 months working at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, on clinical rotations. 

U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Programs

Community Sservice fellowships are for graduate students in health-related professional fields who are dedicated to addressing unmet health needs in their local areas. 

The David E. Rogers Student Fellowship is meant to enrich the educational experiences of medical and dental students through projects that bear on medicine and dentistry as social enterprises. That is, as enterprises devoted to the capacity of these professions in any and all of their expressions to serve human needs, particularly the needs of underserved or disadvantaged patients or populations.

Medical students may apply for either the research fellowship or the service fellowship, which includes a $4,000 stipend for a 10-week period.
