Capstone Projects
M.S. in Data Science students are required to complete a capstone project. Capstone projects challenge students to acquire and analyze data to solve real-world problems. Project teams consist of two to four students and a faculty advisor. Teams select their capstone project at the beginning of the year and work on the project over the course of two semesters.
Most projects are sponsored by an organization—academic, commercial, non-profit, and government—seeking valuable recommendations to address strategic and operational issues. Depending on the needs of the sponsor, teams may develop web-based applications that can support ongoing decision-making. The capstone project concludes with a paper and presentation.

What does the process look like?
- The School of Data Science periodically puts out a Call for Proposals . Prospective project sponsors submit official proposals, vetted by the SDS Associate Director for Research Development .
- Sponsors present their projects to students at “Pitch Day” near the start of the Fall term, where students have the opportunity to ask questions.
- Students individually rank their top project choices. An algorithm sorts students into capstone groups of approximately 3 to 4 students per group.
- Each group is assigned a faculty mentor, who will meet groups each week in a seminar-style format.
What is the seminar approach to mentoring capstones?
We utilize a seminar approach to managing capstones to provide faculty mentorship and streamlined logistics. This approach involves one mentor supervising three to four loosely related projects and meeting with these groups on a regular basis. Project teams often encounter similar roadblocks and issues so meeting together to share information and report on progress toward key milestones is highly beneficial.
Do all capstone projects have sponsors?
Not necessarily. Generally, each group works with a sponsor from outside the School of Data Science. Some sponsors are corporations, some are from nonprofit and governmental organizations, and some are from in other departments at UVA.
Why do we have to work in groups?
Because data science is a team sport!
All capstone projects are completed by group work. While this requires additional coordination , this collaborative component of the program reflects the way companies expect their employees to work. Building this skill is one of our core learning objectives for the program.
I didn’t get my first choice of capstone project from the algorithm matching. What can I do?
Remember that the point of the capstone projects isn’t the subject matter; it’s the data science. Professional data scientists may find themselves in positions in which they work on topics assigned to them, but they use methods they enjoy and still learn much through the process. That said, there are many ways to tackle a subject, and we are more than happy to work with you to find an approach to the work that most aligns with your interests.
Can I work on a project for my current employer?
Each spring, we put forward a public call for capstone projects. You are encouraged to share this call widely with your community, including your employer, non-profit organizations, or any entity that might have a big data problem that we can help solve. As a reminder, capstone projects are group projects so the project would require sufficient student interest after ‘pitch day’. In addition, you (the student) cannot serve as the project sponsor (someone else within your employer organization must serve in that capacity).
If my project doesn’t have a corporate sponsor, am I losing out on a career opportunity?
The capstone project will provide you with the opportunity to do relevant, high-quality work which can be included on a resume and discussed during job interviews. The project paper and your code on Github will provide more career opportunities than the sponsor of the project. Although it does happen from time to time, it is rare that capstones lead to a direct job offer with the capstone sponsor's company. Capstone projects are just one networking opportunity available to you in the program.

Types of Capstone Projects

- Find sources for the project and review them beforehand to ensure that they will be of help to you.
- Come up with a step-by-step methodology for your project.
Using this information, you will then write a capstone project proposal for your project. It informs your instructor or review panel exactly what you intend to present so that they can approve or reject it.
Once approved, you can go on to the next stage. The final write-up has the following parts.

- A description/abstract.
- Introduction
- Rationale/relevance/reason for doing the project.

Surveying people who are older than you, is a big obstacle i faced. Majority of them were not willing to talk about sex. OVER VIEW. Topic 2 For many years, we have been taught that sex and gender do not matter or they have no difference In some cultures sex is considered a sin, but in other cultures sex is a normal thing that is done in private. Perhaps you might ask yourself how sex and gender even came into existence. How did we end up considering sex as an adult private affair? Why females are considered weaker than men in some cultures? This presentation explains all the questions and mysteries about sex and the creation of gender (female stereotype). Transcript: In the coming days and potentially months I hope to continue drafting the inner cuts to the bass for switches, the bridge, and the pickups, which I have recently received in the mail (as this held me back for a while). The final stage of the outer-body work that I finished in class was the routtering of the edges of the bass, which went smovely, however it required further saning along the edges to create a deeper looking "Cut." The next step in the process involved re-drafting the design onto a piece of would, in this case I used maple (Primarily for its density), from here I merely used the bandsaw to roughly cut out the design of the body of the bass, and finally I sanded around the edges using a belt sander. Phase 1 Initially the project involved drafting, and design of the bass, this process primarily utilized French Curves, in order to create the long sweeping arches in the guitar, while a simple straight edge was used in drafting the neck of the bass. Capstone Project Overview
The capstone project demonstrates the MGIS student's ability to apply advanced knowledge and skills related to geographic information systems in a way that makes a substantial contribution to his or her professional work. For most students the project culminates in a formal public presentation, attended by a member of the graduate faculty associated with the MGIS program, which takes place at either an appropriate professional conference (such as annual conferences of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, or Esri). Alternative arrangements are made for students with special needs or constraints. For example, students who submit written reports of project aims and outcomes for publication in advisor-approved peer-reviewed journals are exempt from the public presentation requirement.
1. Capstone Project Proposal
Near the end of the second year of study (when students have between 17 - 23 credits), MGIS students are advised to participate in the Capstone Development Workshop .
During the entrance interview (upon your acceptance to the program), we will make a course plan. We will add you to one of the Capstone Development Workshops based on when you plan to start the capstone project. We will add you to an advising queue based on when you plan to take GEOG 596A.
At the end of the workshop, MGIS students are asked to write a one page summary of ideas for an individual capstone project. The Advising Coordinator uses this summary to identify the most appropriate Penn State Graduate Faculty member to advise the student.
2. Advisor Assignment
After we receive your capstone project proposal, we will begin to look for an advisor for you based on that topic. We will make the introduction between you and your advisor prior to starting GEOG 596A. Here is a list of current advisors and their research interests. Feel free to look to see which faculty members have interest and expertise in your topic area.

Project reports will vary in length, but should be sufficient to understand the specific objectives of the capstone work and the steps taken in the project.
- Project Evaluation - Graduate faculty advisors evaluate capstone projects. Following the capstone presentation or paper submission, MGIS advisors deliver project evaluations to the student and the MGIS Advising Coordinator.
