Google Text-to-Speech

Google Text-to-Speech is an app which turns the text on screen into a spoken language. It works with many other apps on your phone, including Google Play Books.

What can I use it for?

This is a great app for anyone who finds reading a challenge or has a condition which makes reading difficult. It can read aloud a bedtime story, a recipe when you're busy cooking or even texts in a different language. It works with Google translate to take text in one language and ‘speak’ it in another. It already supports over a dozen languages, and Google is adding more to the app all the time. However, check the list of languages in the app description before downloading if this is specifically your reason for downloading.

Do I need this app?

The features are great, but many Android phones already come with this installed as standard, it just needs turning on. Try checking your accessibility settings first: Settings > Language & Input > Text to speech output. However, if you are not using a phone made by Google (especially Huawei, Lenovo) or you are using an older model, you might find this a useful addition to your apps.

  • Great for making text accessible
  • Translation helps you learn phrases
  • Some users complain about voice volume/quality
  • Translate features can feel ‘basic’

Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader

2.9K ratings

Read aloud the current web-page article with one click, using text to speech (TTS). Supports 40+ languages.

Read Aloud uses text-to-speech (TTS) technology to convert webpage text to audio. It works on a variety of websites, including news sites, blogs, fan fiction, publications, textbooks, school and class websites, and online university course materials. Read Aloud allows you to select from a variety of text-to-speech voices, including those provided natively by the browser, as well as by text-to-speech cloud service providers such as Google Wavenet, Amazon Polly, IBM Watson, and Microsoft. Some of the cloud-based voices may require additional in-app purchase to enable. Read Aloud can read PDF, Google Docs, Google Play books, Amazon Kindle, and EPUB (via the excellent EPUBReader extension from epubread.com). Read Aloud is intended for users who prefer to listen to content instead of reading, those with dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and children learning to read. To use Read Aloud, navigate to the web page you want to read, then click the Read Aloud icon on the Chrome menu. In addition, the shortcut keys ALT-P, ALT-O, ALT-Comma, and ALT-Period can be used to Play/Pause, Stop, Rewind, and Forward. You may also select the text you want to read before activating the extension. Right clicking on the selected text will provide you with yet another option to activate Read Aloud via the context menu. To change the voice, reading speed, pitch, or enable text highlighting, go to the Options page either by right clicking on the Read Aloud icon and choose Options, or by clicking the Gear button on the extension popup (you'll need to stop playback to see the Gear button). Read Aloud is an open-source project. If you wish to contribute bug fixes or translations, please visit the GitHub page at https://github.com/ken107/read-aloud.

This article explains how to use the Google text-to-speech feature on Android so that you can have texts read out loud. It includes information on managing the language and voice used for reading text aloud. Instructions apply to Android 7 and up.

How to Use Google Text-to-Speech on Android

Several accessibility features are built into Android. If you want to hear text read aloud to you, use Select to Speak.

Swipe down from the top of the phone, then tap the gear icon to open the Settings app.

Tap Accessibility .

Tap Select to Speak .

If you don't see Select to Speak , tap Installed services to find it.

Tap the Select to Speak toggle switch to turn it on. On some phones, this is called Select to Speak shortcut .

Tap Allow or OK to confirm the permissions your phone needs to turn on this feature.

Open any app and tap the Select to Speak icon from the side of the screen.

Tap the Play icon to have your phone read everything on the screen, starting at the top. If you only want some text read aloud, trigger Select to Speak by tapping the floating icon, then tap the text.

Tap the left arrow next to the Play button to see more playback options.

Tap Stop to end playback.

Use TalkBack on your Android if you want spoken feedback as you use your device.

How to Manage Android Text-to-Speech Voices and Options

Android gives you some control over the language and voice used to read text aloud via Select to Speak. It's easy to change the language, accent, pitch, or speed of the synthesized text voice.

Go to Settings > General management > Language and input . Or on some devices, Settings > Languages .

Tap Text-to-speech or Text-to-speech output .

In the menu that appears, adjust the Speech rate and Pitch until it sounds the way you want.

To change the language, tap Language , then choose the language you want to hear when text is read aloud.

Use Select to Speak With Google Lens to Translate Written Words

Another way you can use this text-to-speech functionality is while translating languages. Google Lens is great for this. Just point the camera at some text you don't understand and it'll be translated into your language. Select to Speak can then read that aloud.

To turn off text-to-speech, go to Settings > Accessibility > Select to Speak and tap the toggle switch to turn it Off .

The Android text-to-speech feature works in the Google Docs app, but on a computer, you must download the Screen Reader extension for Chrome . Then, go to Tools > Accessibility settings > Turn on Screen Reader Support > OK , highlight the text, and select Accessibility > Speak > Speak selection .

To use voice typing in Google Docs , place your cursor in the document where you want to begin typing, then select Tools > Voice Typing . Alternatively, you can also use a keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + S or Command + Shift + S .

The 7 Best Text-to-Speech Apps for Android

Text-to-speech is a handy feature on your Android phone even if you don't have a disability. These text-to-speech apps take it to the next level.

Every Android user should keep a text-to-speech app handy. You don't need to have a vision impairment to enjoy the benefits. For example, they'll let you listen to the news on your morning commute, catch up with new text messages in bed, or even enjoy your favorite eBooks without looking at the screen.

But which Android text-to-speech apps are the best? Keep reading to find out.

1. Android's Native Text-to-Speech Feature

Android has lots of accessibility tools that make a phone easier to use. One of the tools is a native text-to-speech function. The feature has fewer customizable settings than some of its competitors, but you can adjust the speech rate and pitch and install additional languages.

To change the text-to-speech settings, head to Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output .

Android's text-to-speech feature automatically works with other Google apps that offer a read-aloud feature. For all other apps, you'll need to enable Select to Speak in Android's settings menu, which you'll find at Settings > Accessibility > Select to Speak . To use it, select text in any app and choose Speak from the popup menu.

If you only want basic text-to-speech functionality, you can stop here. The other options are only worth exploring if you need more features.

2. Voice Aloud Reader

Voice Aloud Reader is easy to use and supports a few different ways of reading text. If the app from which you want to read text has a share feature, just send the content to Voice Aloud Reader using the native Android Share menu . This also works for on-screen items that have their own share buttons, like tweets and Facebook posts.

Similarly, if the text you want to read is selectable, you can use the Share button in the popup context menu.

The app also works with URLs. Just paste the site's (or article's) address into Voice Aloud Reader, and it will automatically parse and read the relevant text for you. It's intelligent enough to strip out the menus and other junk. You can even add text files (like DOC and PDF) directly into the app; it can open the files and read their contents.

Download: Voice Aloud Reader (Free)

3. Narrator's Voice

Narrator's Voice offers something a bit different. The usual features are here: it is an app that reads text from apps, the web, messages, and other sources.

However, the app also has a fun side. You can add various sound effects to the speech synthesis, such as echo, reverb, gargle, and choir. It features a wide selection of voices to choose from. Some tech favorites like Cortana and Siri are present, as are some of the developer's own creations like "Steven" and "Pink Sheep" (don't ask).

Additionally, Narrator's Voice lets you add your own text, which it will then run through its synthesizer. It makes the app a great way to add a voiceover to video narrations, slideshow presentations, and more. You can even save your audio output file as an MP3, store it offline, and share it with friends.

An in-app purchase removes the ads.

Download: Narrator's Voice (Free, in-app purchases available)

Talk takes a more minimal approach than Voice Aloud Reader and Narrator's Voice, but it is still one of the best free text-to-speech apps for Android. The app can import web pages directly from your phone's browser or read the text from other third-party apps. You can export all the audio files and save them offline in the WAV format.

It's important to note that Talk Free relies on your phone's pre-existing text-to-speech (TTS) engine to work. Most Android devices will already have Google's engine installed. If you have deleted your phone's TTS engine, you can re-download Speech Recognition & Synthesis free from the Play Store.

The benefit of using Google's TTS engine is its support for lots of languages. If Google offers the language, Talk can generally work with it.

T2S is a text-to-speech app that offers one of the most modern interfaces out of the apps we've discussed so far.

The app's standout feature is the presence of a simple built-in web browser. It's not going to win any awards for the number of features it offers, but it lets you easily listen to web pages without worrying about copying and pasting URLs or using the Share menu.

T2S's copy-to-speak feature is also worth mentioning. It shows an on-screen popup button whenever you copy text into other apps. Pressing the button will make the app start reading the copied text instantly. As with the other apps on this list, T2S lets you save your audio readouts and share them with other people. The pro version removes ads.

Download: T2S (Free, in-app purchases available)

6. NaturalReader

With AI being all the buzz, we ought to include an AI-powered solution to this list. NaturalReader offers almost 150 AI voices in different languages and over 25 dialects so that you can customize your text-to-speech experience to your liking.

The app can run in the background, so you can use other apps while listening to content. Moreover, it supports over 20 document formats, including PDF, DOCX, and eBook formats.

Other than the usual text-to-speech features, you can also use NaturalReader to detect and read text from images. This feature can come in super handy if you deal with a lot of scanned documents.

This feature is not perfect yet, but it works. If you're not satisfied with the built-in image-to-text functionality, you can convert images to text using OCR apps and then use NaturalReader for text-to-speech.

Download: NaturalReader (Free, in-app purchases available)

We'll leave you with a slightly left-field choice: Pocket. You probably already know it as one of the best apps to save articles to read later when you're offline.

You may not know, however, that Pocket also has a text-to-speech reader. The feature supports multiple voices and languages and includes adjustable pitch and speed. It even supports background playback, meaning you can keep listening while you use other apps.

Because the text-to-speech reader is one of Pocket's native features, it's great when you want to listen to some long-form content on a journey when you are without the internet. Obviously, if you want to listen to text from all your apps, this isn't the right choice for you.

The Top Text-to-Voice Apps

Hopefully, you now appreciate the benefits of keeping a text-to-speech app installed on your Android device. Once you become more familiar with their use, you'll start to rely on the apps a lot more. Don't believe us? Try a couple, stick with them for a week or two, and thank us later!

There's also an opposite way of communicating with your Android device, that is, speech-to-text. Such apps are particularly great for note-taking.

How-To Geek

How to modify google text-to-speech voices.

Google Text-to-Speech is a useful accessibility feature, but it can sound a little robotic. Here's how you can change your Google Text-to-Speech voice.

Quick Links

Changing speech rate and pitch, choosing text-to-speech tone, switching languages, changing text-to-speech engines.

While Google focuses on the Assistant, Android owners shouldn't forget about the Text-to-Speech (TTS) accessibility feature. It'll convert text from your Android apps, but you might need to modify it to get the speech to sound the way you want it.

Modifying Text-to-Speech voices is easily done from the Android accessibility settings menu. You can change the speed and pitch of your chosen voice, as well as the voice engine you use.

Google Text-to-Speech is the default voice engine and is pre-installed on most Android devices. If your Android device doesn't have it installed, you can download the Google Text-to-Speech app  from the Google Play Store.

Android will use default settings for Google Text-to-Speech, but you might need to change the speed and pitch of the Text-to-Speech voice to make it easier for you to understand.

Changing the TTS speech rate and pitch requires you to get into the Google accessibility settings menu. The steps for this might vary slightly, depending on your version of Android and your device manufacturer.

To open the Android accessibility menu, go to Android's "Settings" menu. You can get to this by swiping down on your display to access your notification shade and tapping the gear icon in the top right, or by launching the "Settings" app from within your apps drawer.

In the "Settings" menu, tap the "Accessibility" option.

Samsung device owners will have two extra steps here. Tap "Screen Reader" and then "Settings." Other Android owners can go straight to the next step.

Select "Text-to-Speech" or "Text-to-Speech Output," depending on your Android device.

From here, you'll be able to change your Text-to-Speech settings.

Changing Speech Rate

Speech rate is the speed your Text-to-Speech voice will speak at. If your TTS engine is too fast (or too slow), the speech could sound deformed or hard to understand.

If you've followed the steps above, you should see a slider under the heading "Speech Rate" in the "Text-to-Speech" menu. With your finger, slide this right or left to raise or lower the rate you're seeking.

Press the "Listen to an Example" button to test your new speech rate. Samsung owners will have a "Play" button, so tap that instead.

Changing Pitch

If you feel the Text-to-Speech engine is too high (or low) pitched, you can change this by following the same process as changing your speech rate.

As above, in your "Text-to-Speech" settings menu, adjust the "Pitch" slider to the pitch you like.

Once you're ready, press "Listen to an Example" or "Play" (depending on your device) to try the new rate.

Continue this process until you're happy with both your speech rate and pitch settings, or tap "Reset" to return to your default TTS settings.

Not only can you change the pitch and rate of your TTS speech engine, but you can also change the tone of the voice. Some language packs included with the default Google Text-to-Speech engine have different voices that sound either male or female.

Similarly, the Samsung Text-to-Speech engine included with Samsung devices has a varied selection of gendered voices for you to use.

If you're using the Google Text-to-Speech engine, tap the gear menu button in the "Text-to-Speech Output" settings menu, next to the "Google Text-to-Speech Engine" option.

If you're on a Samsung device, you'll only have one gear icon in the "Text-to-Speech Settings" menu, so tap that instead.

In the "Google TTS Options" menu, tap the "Install Voice Data" option.

Tap your chosen regional language. For example, if you're from the U.S., you might want to choose "English (United States)."

You'll see various voices listed and numbered, from "Voice I" onwards. Tap on each one to hear what it sounds like. You'll need to make sure your device isn't muted.

With the "English (United Kingdom)" language pack, "Voice I" is female, while "Voice II" is male, and the voices continue to alternate in this pattern. Tap on the tone you're happy with as your final choice.

Your choice will be automatically saved, although if you've selected a different language to your device's default, you will also need to change this.

If you need to switch languages, you can easily do this from the "Text-to-Speech" settings menu. You might want to do this if you've chosen a different language in your TTS engine than your system default language.

You should see an option for "Language" in your "Text-to-Speech" settings menu. Tap this to open the menu.

Choose your language from the list by tapping it.

You can confirm the change in language by pressing the "Listen to an Example" or "Play" button to test it.

If the Google TTS language isn't suitable for you, you can install alternatives. Samsung devices, for instance, will come with their own Samsung Text-to-Speech engine, which your device will default to.

Installing Third-Party Text-to-Speech Engines

Alternative third-party Text-to-Speech engines are also available. These can be installed from the Google Play Store, or you can install them manually. Example TTS engines you could install include Acapela and  eSpeak TTS , although others are available.

Once installed from the Google Play Store, these third-party TTS engines will appear in your Text-to-Speech settings.

Changing Text-to-Speech Engine

If you've installed a new Text-to-Speech engine and you want to change it, go to the "Text-to-Speech" settings menu.

At the top, you should see a list of your available TTS engines. If you have a Samsung device, you might need to tap the "Preferred Engine" option to see your list.

Tap on your preferred engine, whether it's Google Text-to-Speech or a third-party alternative.

With your new TTS engine selected, tap "Listen to an Example" or "Play" (depending on your device) to test it.

For most users, the default Google or Samsung Text-to-Speech engines will offer the best sounding speech generation, but third-party options could work better for other languages where the default engine isn't suitable.

Once your engine and languages are selected, you're free to use it with any Android app that supports it.

In the digital era, the need for effective communication tools has led to a surge in the popularity of text-to-speech (TTS) software, and finding the best free text-to-speech software is essential for a variety of users, regardless of budget constraints.

Text-to-speech software skillfully converts written text into spoken words using advanced technology, though often without grasping the context of the content. The best text-to-speech software not only accomplishes this task but also offers a selection of natural-sounding voices, catering to different preferences and project needs.

This technology is invaluable for creating accessible content, enhancing workplace productivity, adding voice-overs to videos, or simply assisting in proofreading by vocalizing written work. While many of today’s best free word processors , such as Google Docs, include basic TTS features that are accurate and continually improving, they may not meet all needs.

Stand-alone, app-based TTS tools, which should not be confused with the best speech-to-text apps , often have limitations compared to more comprehensive, free text-to-speech software. For instance, some might not allow the downloading of audio files, a feature crucial for creating content for platforms like YouTube and social media.

In our quest to identify the best free text-to-speech software, we have meticulously tested various options, assessing them based on user experience, performance, and output quality. Our guide aims to help you find the right text-to-speech tool, whatever your specific needs might be.

The best free text-to-speech software overall

1. Natural Reader

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

Natural Reader offers one of the best free text-to-speech software experiences, thanks to an easy-going interface and stellar results. It even features online and desktop versions.

You'll find plenty of user options and customizations. The first is to load documents into its library and have them read aloud from there. This is a neat way to manage multiple files, and the number of supported file types is impressive, including eBook formats. There's also OCR, which enables you to load up a photo or scan of text, and have it spoken to you.

The second option takes the form of a floating toolbar. In this mode, you can highlight text in any application and use the toolbar controls to start and customize text-to-speech. This means you can very easily use the feature in your web browser, word processor and a range of other programs. There's also a browser extension to convert web content to speech more easily.

The TTS tool is available free, with three additional upgrades with more advanced features for power-users and professionals.

The best free custom-voice text-to-speech software

2. Balabolka

There are a couple of ways to use Balabolka's top free text-to-speech software. You can either copy and paste text into the program, or you can open a number of supported file formats (including DOC, PDF, and HTML) in the program directly.

In terms of output, you can use SAPI 4 complete with eight different voices to choose from, SAPI 5 with two, or the Microsoft Speech Platform. Whichever route you choose, you can adjust the speech, pitch and volume of playback to create a custom voice.

In addition to reading words aloud, this free text-to-speech software can also save narrations as audio files in a range of formats including MP3 and WAV. For lengthy documents, you can create bookmarks to make it easy to jump back to a specific location and there are excellent tools on hand to help you to customize the pronunciation of words to your liking.

With all these features to make life easier when reading text on a screen isn't an option, Balabolka is the best free text-to-speech software around.

For more help using Balabolka, see out guide on how to convert text to speech using this free software.

The best free text-to-speech software for beginners

Panopreter Basic website screenshot

3. Panopreter Basic

Panopreter Basic is the best free text-to-speech software if you’re looking for something simple, streamlined, no-frills, and hassle-free.

It accepts plain and rich text files, web pages and Microsoft Word documents as input, and exports the resulting sound in both WAV and MP3 format (the two files are saved in the same location, with the same name).

The default settings work well for quick tasks, but spend a little time exploring Panopreter Basic's Settings menu and you'll find options to change the language, destination of saved audio files, and set custom interface colors. The software can even play a piece of music once it's finished reading – a nice touch you won't find in other free text-to-speech software.

If you need something more advanced, a premium version of Panopreter is available. This edition offers several additional features including toolbars for Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer , the ability to highlight the section of text currently being read, and extra voices.

WordTalk website screenshot

4. WordTalk

Developed by the University of Edinburgh, WordTalk is a toolbar add-on for Word that brings customizable text-to-speech to Microsoft Word. It works with all editions of Word and is accessible via the toolbar or ribbon, depending on which version you're using.

The toolbar itself is certainly not the most attractive you'll ever see, appearing to have been designed by a child. Nor are all of the buttons' functions very clear, but thankfully there's a help file on hand to help.

There's no getting away from the fact that WordTalk is fairly basic, but it does support SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices, and these can be tweaked to your liking. The ability to just read aloud individual words, sentences or paragraphs is a particularly nice touch. You also have the option of saving narrations, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that allow for quick and easy access to frequently used options.

The best free text-to-speech software for websites

Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader website screenshot

5. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader

Despite its basic looks, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader has more to offer than you might first think. You can open numerous file formats directly in the program, or just copy and paste text.

Alternatively, as long as you have the program running and the relevant option enables, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can read aloud any text you copy to the clipboard – great if you want to convert words from websites to speech – as well as dialog boxes that pop up. One of the best free text-to-speech software right now, this can also convert text files to WAV format.

Unfortunately the selection of voices is limited, and the only settings you can customize are volume and speed unless you burrow deep into settings to fiddle with pronunciations. Additional voices are available for an additional fee which seems rather steep, holding it back from a higher place in our list.

The best free text-to-speech software: FAQs

What are the limitations of free tts software.

As you might expect, some free versions of TTS software do come with certain limitations. These include the amount of choices you get for the different amount of voices in some case. For instance, Zabaware gives you two for free, but you have to pay if you want more.

However, the best free software on this list come with all the bells and whistles that will be more than enough for the average user.

What is SAPI?

SAPI stands for Speech Application Programming Interface. It was developed by Microsoft to generate synthetic speech to allow computer programs to read aloud text. First used in its own applications such as Office, it is also employed by third party TTS software such as those featured in this list.

In the context of TTS software, there are more SAPI 4 voices to choose from, whereas SAPI 5 voices are generally of a higher quality.

Should I output files to MP3 or WAV?

Many free TTS programs give you the option to download an audio file of the speech to save and transfer to different devices.

MP3 is the most common audio format, and compatible with pretty much any modern device capable of playing back audio. The WAV format is also highly compatible too.

The main difference between the two is quality. WAV files are uncompressed, meaning fidelity is preserved as best as possible, at the cost of being considerably larger in size than MP3 files, which do compress.

Ultimately, however, MP3 files with a bit rate of 256 kbps and above should more than suffice, and you'll struggle to tell the difference when it comes to speech audio between them and WAV files.

How to choose the best free text-to-speech software

When selecting the best free text-to-speech software is best for you depends on a range of factors (not to mention personal preference).

Despite how simple the concept of text-to-speech is, there are many different features and aspects to such apps to take into consideration. These include how many voice options and customizations are present, how and where they operate in your setup, what formats they are able to read aloud from and what formats the audio can be saved as.

With free versions, naturally you'll want to take into account how many advanced features you get without paying, and whether any sacrifices are made to performance or usability.

Always try to keep in mind what is fair and reasonable for free services - and as we've shown with our number one choice, you can get plenty of features for free, so if other options seem bare in comparison, then you'll know you can do better.

How we test the best free text-to-speech software

Our testing process for the best free text-to-speech software is thorough, examining all of their respective features and trying to throw every conceivable syllable at them to see how they perform.

We also want to test the accessibility features of these tools to see how they work for every kind of user out there. We have highlighted, for instance, whether certain software offer dyslexic-friendly fonts, such as the number two on our list, Natural Reader.

We also bear in mind that these are free versions, so where possible we compare and contrast their feature sets with paid-for rivals.

Finally, we look at how well TTS tools meet the needs of their intended users - whether it's designed for personal use or professional deployment.

Apr 19, 2024

Speech Services by Google is an official app from Google that lets you make other apps on your Android device talk to you, dictating the text on the screen out loud.

It's important to keep in mind that Speech Services by Google is not compatible with all the apps available for Android – in fact it only works with a few. Among the most important, two are from Google: Google Play Books and Google Translator. The first lets you listen to all the books on your device, and the second lets you listen to the translations.

To activate the voice, you have to follow these steps: access the settings, choose Language and Text Input, and select Google's text-to-speech engine as your default.

How can I download audio from Google’s sample text-to-speech?

I would like to be able to save the audio from the sample from Google’s cloud-based text-to-speed servic e. Is it possible to do this?

If you're going to do a lot of this, you should really use the API that they offer, but here's a quick step by step if you just want to download a single sample of Google's speech synthesis.

  • Go to the page in Google Chrome.
  • Open the Developer Tools (by pushing F12 )
  • Go to the "Network" tab.
  • Enter the text you want to get audio of.
  • Click the "SPEAK IT" button.
  • Watch the "Network" tab populate with a couple of entries.
  • Right-click the entry that starts with data:audio/wav;base64, and click "Open in new tab".
  • In the new tab, right-click the audio player, and click "Save video as..."
  • Choose where you want to save the resulting .wav file.

Note: This will get you a (marginally) cleaner copy of the audio than recording the Stereo Mix from your sound card.

  • 3 Note: @wysiwyg's answer will continue to work even if Google changes things in order to make it so that this trick won't work anymore, and it is also useful for many other things where such tricks already don't work. –  3D1T0R Aug 28, 2018 at 19:48

As predicted in this comment , the accepted answer is now broken. The basic approach still works though, except you have to save the proxy.json and then decode the base64-encoded audio:

Edit: @3D1T0R 's answer is simpler and will most likely result in a higher quality file.

I would just use an audio recording program, such as Audacity , to record the "Stereo Mix" of your computer. You haven't specified an OS but assuming Windows:

enter image description here

Then download/open Audacity, and in the Recording Device dropdown box, select Stereo Mix . Then just hit Record, and anything you hear playing out of your speakers will be recorded to a sound file.

I wrote a browser extension specifically for this purpose: https://github.com/skygate2012/i_would_like_to_obtain_a_sample_plox

It uses the WebExtensions API to sniff HTTP responses and saves the wav audio when matched.

  • 2 @Garbit Not at the moment, I can't fix a bug that stopped working on the latest version of Firefox. If you can help PRs are welcome. –  skygate Oct 28, 2020 at 6:25

Here are the current steps

  • Go to https://cloud.google.com/text-to-speech
  • Open the Developer Tools (by F12)
  • Go to the "Network" tab.
  • Click the "SPEAK IT" button.
  • Click the “I’m not a robot” checkbox
  • Watch the "Network" tab populate with a couple of entries.
  • Right-click the entry that starts with proxy?url=https://texttospeech
  • In the preview to right, click "copy" in the line for “audiocontent”
  • Save this as a text file (base64.txt). Remove the quotes (") from beginning and end This contains the base64 encoded audio
  • In Ubuntu, decode base64 to wav file with the following command:
  • cat base64.txt | base64 --decode > audio.mp3

screenshot

  • Just wanted to mention that under windows you can use in build command certutil -decode source-file destination.wav –  user36058 Sep 3, 2022 at 22:18

Basically the same way. Inspect json response, take audiocontent base64 and decode to wav.

To make it easier for you, I made a chrome extension named audiotts. Just click SPEAK IT button and waiting the audio player come in. You can download the audio using download menu of the audio player.

How To Use Speech-To-Text On Google Docs

Person using voice typing

Whether you're on the move or suffering from an unfortunate bout of carpal tunnel, there are plenty of scenarios when simply typing out passages of text on a keyboard just isn't the most feasible option. That's why phones, TVs, and other smart devices have adopted various bits of speech-to-text software, allowing a program to automatically record and transcribe spoken words into written text with the touch of a button. Fortunately, it seems that text editor programs have also joined the speech-to-text wave, including one particularly popular online word processor.

The current iteration of Google Docs includes an optional feature in its suite of tools that adds speech-to-text functionality to the typical document writing process. Known as voice typing, this specialized tool uses built-in software and a compatible device's microphone to allow the user to vocally dictate entire documents' worth of text on Google Docs, proper punctuation and all. It's a feature that's worth trying out for avid users of the program, and it's not too hard to get it working at a moment's notice.

How to use voice typing in Google Docs

While it isn't possible to leave voice typing enabled at all times in Google Docs, it can be activated on any given document with a few quick steps.

  • Open the Google Docs document you want to use voice typing with.
  • Ensure that the device you're accessing Google Docs on has a microphone and that is enabled and unmuted.
  • At the top of the page, select Tools.
  • Click Voice typing from the dropdown menu.
  • A small widget box with a microphone icon will appear on the page. Click the microphone icon.
  • Your browser may ask if you want to give Google Docs permission to use your device's microphone. If this occurs, select Allow.
  • Ensure that the microphone icon has turned red.
  • Voice typing is now enabled. Speak aloud and Google Docs will automatically transcribe the audio into written text.
  • Once you have finished speaking, click the red microphone icon and ensure that it returns to the gray microphone icon in the widget box. Voice typing is now disabled.

Voice typing can be set to automatically detect and dictate well over 60 distinct languages and a plethora of regional dialects and accents. Similar to keyboard shortcuts , voice typing also recognizes phrases of punctuation and will add the appropriate symbols based on phrases like "Period," "Comma," "Question mark," and more.

Google Docs has voice commands as well

Speech-to-text is a great way for users to give their fingers a rest and let programs shoulder the weight of typing out text, but some may have concerns that a vocal dictation software like Google Docs' voice typing is relatively limited in what it can do. However, voice typing on Google Docs has a far more robust feature set than simply transcribing audio. In reality, the feature supports a lengthy list of voice commands that give users the power to make all sorts of changes to their documents without even touching the keyboard.

Voice typing is designed to recognize and distinguish specific voice commands from regular spoken words. These commands can range from basic functions like "Copy," "Paste," and "Italicize" to complex actions like "Insert table of contents" or "Create bulleted list." Essentially, voice typing supports vocal shortcuts for just about every basic action one can take while normally editing a document through Google Docs, right down to dictating the exact formatting of the document itself. Generally speaking, the software will recognize whatever editing-related command is given. However, should users have trouble getting the software to do exactly what they want, they can simply request to "See all voice commands" to get a comprehensive list.

For the time being, Google Docs voice typing can only recognize and carry out English voice commands. Nonetheless, this software stands as quite an important accessibility feature .

Voice   Generator

This web app allows you to generate voice audio from text - no login needed, and it's completely free! It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

Facts about the us english language:.

English was brought to Britain in the mid 5th to 7th centuries. If you were to ask those who don't speak English whether or not it's a hard language to learn, you'd likely get more than a few who insist that it is among the hardest.

Though, it can be argued that English is easy since it has no gender, no word agreement, and no cases. Yet, it does have words such as through, threw, and thru, all sounds the same, but are spelled differently, and can't be used interchangeably.

English also has polish, and Polish. One is used to make furniture shine, while the other is a language. Or take resume and resume, one is used when you're filling out job applications, and the other is used when you want to tell someone to carry on with what they're doing.

As you can see above, the English language can be challenging, however, it's far from the most difficult language to learn. With a bit of study, and some practice, almost anyone can learn English. One of the best ways to learn the language is to find a friend who speaks English, and is willing to have conversations with you. This will help you immerse yourself in the language and pick up on the nuances, and speech patterns of English. With a bit of practice, you'll soon be speaking English like it's your native language.

Gemini 1.5 Pro Now Available in 180+ Countries; With Native Audio Understanding, System Instructions, JSON Mode and More

April 09, 2024

google text to speech app download

Grab an API key in Google AI Studio , and get started with the Gemini API Cookbook

Less than two months ago, we made our next-generation Gemini 1.5 Pro model available in Google AI Studio for developers to try out. We’ve been amazed by what the community has been able to debug , create and learn using our groundbreaking 1 million context window.

Today, we’re making Gemini 1.5 Pro available in 180+ countries via the Gemini API in public preview, with a first-ever native audio (speech) understanding capability and a new File API to make it easy to handle files. We’re also launching new features like system instructions and JSON mode to give developers more control over the model’s output. Lastly, we’re releasing our next generation text embedding model that outperforms comparable models. Go to Google AI Studio to create or access your API key, and start building.

Unlock new use cases with audio and video modalities

We’re expanding the input modalities for Gemini 1.5 Pro to include audio (speech) understanding in both the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Additionally, Gemini 1.5 Pro is now able to reason across both image (frames) and audio (speech) for videos uploaded in Google AI Studio, and we look forward to adding API support for this soon.

Gemini API Improvements

Today, we’re addressing a number of top developer requests:

1. System instructions : Guide the model’s responses with system instructions, now available in Google AI Studio and the Gemini API. Define roles, formats, goals, and rules to steer the model's behavior for your specific use case. Set System Instructions easily in Google AI Studio 2. JSON mode : Instruct the model to only output JSON objects. This mode enables structured data extraction from text or images. You can get started with cURL, and Python SDK support is coming soon. 3. Improvements to function calling : You can now select modes to limit the model’s outputs, improving reliability. Choose text, function call, or just the function itself.

A new embedding model with improved performance

Starting today, developers will be able to access our next generation text embedding model via the Gemini API. The new model, text-embedding-004 , (text-embedding-preview-0409 in Vertex AI ), achieves a stronger retrieval performance and outperforms existing models with comparable dimensions, on the MTEB benchmarks .

These are just the first of many improvements coming to the Gemini API and Google AI Studio in the next few weeks. We’re continuing to work on making Google AI Studio and the Gemini API the easiest way to build with Gemini. Get started today in Google AI Studio with Gemini 1.5 Pro, explore code examples and quickstarts in our new Gemini API Cookbook , and join our community channel on Discord .

FitMachine, SpeakLine, Superwhisper, and other apps to check out this weekend

If it’s the weekend and you know it clap your hands ::clap clap::. You know it is, because it’s time for another Apps of the Week roundup. This week we have some incredible picks for you including a video game-esque workout app, a powerful text-to-speech app, and perhaps the most anticipated and talked about app…ever. You don’t want to miss this!

FitMachine: Legends of Fitness

google text to speech app download

This looks more like a video game than a workout app, and maybe that’s the point. Fit Machine: Legends of Fitness offers a fresh take on AI-powered workouts for fast, fun sessions, anytime, anywhere. It’s like having a personal trainer in your pocket. The whole AI thing may sound like a gimmick, but the developers claim it analyzes your performance during each session, and makes adjustments to ensure you’re getting the most out of each workout. Look, either this sort of thing appeals to you, or it doesn’t. If it does, it’s certainly worth checking out.

Download for free

SpeakLine – Text to Speech

google text to speech app download

This isn’t a new app, but it’s one we’ve never covered on here and it’s definitely worth checking out. It’s called SpeakLine, and it’s essentially text-to-speech software that reads anything you type out loud. Obviously, there are tons of apps out there that do this, but there are some major selling points here. SpeakLine has a bunch of voices you can choose from, including funny-sounds and different languages, and you can customize the speed and pitch. The software is also completely free, without ads, and available across Mac, iOS, and even Apple Vision. Remember the movie Blank Check ? Yeah, that’s going to be me with this app this weekend.

Superwhisper

google text to speech app download

So the previous app was text-to-speech, and this one is speech-to-text. That’s right, Superwhisper lets you write notes, emails, messages and documents without ever lifting a finger. This is another app that offers something you’ve already seen in a bunch of other applications, but if you haven’t landed on a favorite yet, it’s worth taking for a spin. It uses AI tech for perfect punctation and formatting, allowing you to transcribe your speech into notes 5x faster than the typical speech-to-text app. It supports over 100 languages, and you can export the notes into almost any format. In fact, I wrote this entire post using this app. Okay, so I didn’t, but that would’ve been an awesome line to end on, right?

Delta – Game Emulator

google text to speech app download

I normally try to avoid mentioning apps or games in this roundup that we’ve already covered elsewhere on iDB, but to be honest, this one was unavoidable. The reality is, if you are looking for a game to play this weekend, there is simply only one title to download: Delta – Game Emulator. For those that missed it, Apple recently amended its App Store rules to allow for emulators, and Delta is by far the most popular. It looks great, it’s compatible with games from NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and more, and it supports all major console and MFi controllers. As you’d expect, it doesn’t come with any pre-installed games, so you’ll have to add your own ROMs. But once you’ve done that, your weekend entertainment will be set. If you don’t already have a Bluetooth controller, be sure to check out our roundup of the best Bluetooth controllers for iPhone  and pick one up.

Everything you need to know about the Kindle app

Your Kindle e-reader isn’t the only way to read eBooks. If you forget your Kindle at home, don’t fret—you can read all of the same content on the Kindle app for your iPhone or Android device, iPad or Fire tablet, and even your PC or Mac. In fact, Amazon offers Kindle apps for pretty much every device you own—meaning, you don’t even need to own a Kindle to read that novel you saw on the New York Times bestseller list.

A woman lounges in a chair, with her feet tucked to the side, reading a new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.

Want to try out the Kindle app? Here’s everything you need to know to get the most out of it.

How to install the Kindle app on your favorite device

Fire Max 11 apps

The free Kindle app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or the Samsung Galaxy store, and comes pre-installed on your Fire tablet. You don’t need to do a lot to get started. Just go to Amazon’s download page on your device and select the corresponding link to download the Kindle app. Click or tap the appropriate link and install the app.

After you install the app, open it and sign in with your Amazon account details that you may have already created for buying things on Amazon.com , or simply create a new account. Your entire Kindle library should automatically appear on the Library tab of the app. Just tap a book to download it to your device and start reading.

A Kindle e-reader.

The Kindle for iPad app is now available on the Apple Vision Pro via the Apple Appstore. In the new immersive environments, customers can now read their favorite book on the top of a mountain, in Joshua Tree National Park, or even on the moon, all while turning pages simply via eye-tracking+pinch or virtual touches.

Downloading a book to the Kindle app

Want to add new titles to your Kindle app? Simply visit the Kindle store in a web browser and buy your book. Once you make the purchase, your book will show up automatically in the app.

Navigating the Kindle app

A man sits in the back of a camper van, in front of a large body of water. He is holding a Kindle Paperwhite and appears to be reading.

The Kindle app is very similar to the Kindle e-reader, so if you have one of those, you’ll feel right at home here. Even if you don’t own a Kindle, though, getting around the app is easy.

The Home tab at the bottom of the page takes you to the Kindle’s main screen, where you’ll find the From Your Library section—these are the books you already own. The rest of the page is filled with book recommendations you can browse, download samples, and even add to your purchase list on the Amazon website. Don’t miss the banner at the top of the page that gives you quick access to books by category and genre.

You can get back to the book you are reading by clicking on the book cover at the bottom of the screen on Home or Library .

Person reading on a Kindle device.

The More tab is where you can find a slew of additional features, like Reading Insights—stats about your reading history—as well as your wish list, household book sharing controls, Settings, and more.

Customizing your Kindle app

Just like a Kindle e-reader, you can tweak the reading experience within the Kindle app. When you’re reading a book, for example, tap near the very top of the screen to see the page controls. Here you can tap the left arrow to return to the home screen or tap the chapter controls (which looks like a three-line outline) to quickly zoom to a specific chapter.

But the best control in this menu is the font button. Tap the Aa icon to change the font style and text size, page color, and how compact the text is arranged on the page. You can also choose to make the text to scroll as one long page on the Layout tab. Some people prefer this option, which makes the text appear like a webpage instead of on separate book-like pages.

USC cancels graduation keynote by filmmaker amid controversy over decision to drop student’s speech

google text to speech app download

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The University of Southern California further shook up its commencement plans Friday, announcing the cancelation of a keynote speech by filmmaker Jon M. Chu just days after making the controversial choice to disallow the student valedictorian from speaking.

The private university in Los Angeles on Monday said it was canceling valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s speech at the May 10 ceremony because of safety concerns. Tabassum, who is Muslim, has expressed support for Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, and university officials said the response to her selection as valedictorian had “taken on an alarming tenor.” They did not cite any specific threats.

The university’s decision was met with praise from pro-Israel organizations but condemnation from free speech groups and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Students and faculty marched across campus Thursday in silent protest of the university’s decision.

Now, university officials say they are “redesigning” the entire commencement program.

“Given the highly publicized circumstances surrounding our main-stage commencement program, university leadership has decided it is best to release our outside speakers and honorees from attending this year’s ceremony,” the university said in an unsigned statement posted Friday. “We’ve been talking to this exceptional group and hope to confer these honorary degrees at a future commencement or other academic ceremonies.”

Chu was slated to deliver the keynote address at the May 10 ceremony. He is a 2003 graduate of the university who has since directed films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Wicked,” an adaptation for the Broadway musical set for release last this year.

More than 65,000 people are expected to gather on campus for commencement, including 19,000 graduates.

“Although this should have been a time of celebration for my family, friends, professors, and classmates, anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all,” Tabassum said in a statement earlier this week.

The Israel-Hamas war has presented a challenge for colleges under pressure to preserve free speech and open debate, and campuses are expected to be further tested as commencement speeches get underway in the coming weeks.

At Columbia University on Thursday, New York police removed a pro-Palestinian protest encampment and arrested more than 100 demonstrators. Most of them were charged with trespassing at the Ivy League-institution.

Several students involved in the protest said they also were suspended from Columbia and nearby Barnard College. The school said it was still identifying students involved in the protest and added more suspensions would be forthcoming.

“Students have a right to free speech but do not have a right to violate university policies and disrupt learning on campus,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams, who said the city was asked by university officials to remove the encampment.
