John Luther Movie Review: Standard investigative thriller elevated by an intense third act
Rating: ( 3 / 5).
A couple of weeks ago, we saw Jayasurya playing a character who loses the ability of one of his five senses. So one can't help but be amused after seeing him playing another character who loses the function of another one of his five senses. It's the ears, this time. The good thing is John Luther , directed by newcomer Abhijith Joseph, doesn't spend so much time showing the protagonist's struggles with his impairment. The titular cop carries on with his duty regardless of it. If there's one thing I like about the last couple of characters that Jayasurya played, they all don't stay weak for long. Is this a pattern?
Director: Abhijith Joseph
Cast: Jayasurya, Deepak Parambol, Siddique, Athmiya
There is a scene where John attends his sister's engagement and can't wait to get back to an ongoing investigation. He is a workaholic, a quality his father (Siddique) can't stand. There is another reason for his dislike of his son's profession. John has often been in situations that caused him varying degrees of bodily harm. So when his ears are damaged — except for 20 percent of hearing in one ear — it causes more concern for his dad and us. I say us because it's this trait that chiefly contributes to the tension in the film. How will someone with damaged ears catch and subdue a dangerous serial murderer? John Luther is a standard investigative thriller that starts with a hit-and-run and, subsequently, a missing man.
John Luther is strong on mood, with the mist-heavy Munnar locales, occasional rains, dilapidated warehouses, and the orange-and-teal tone accentuating the mounting dread. However, it's not too high on disturbing content — when compared with notable names in the same genre like Raatsasan or the recent Antakshari , that is. Most of John Luther follows the format of a standard investigative thriller, starting with John and his sub-ordinate (Deepak Parambol) wading through clues gathered from CCTV footage, license plates, and informants. I was amused when I remembered that Rajeev Ravi's cop thriller, Kuttavum Shikshayum , currently playing alongside John Luther in theatres, has the cops beginning the investigation in almost the same way, by looking for a vehicle.
Among the recent investigation thrillers in Malayalam, John Luther is the third after Anjaam Pathira and Twenty One Gms to have a creepy-looking automobile with an unseen driver wreaking havoc. The film is at its most effective when focussing on John's investigation. It briefly tests your patience when it veers off course to visit his family members. This whole family portion seems forcefully incorporated to appeal to family audiences. Aside from giving us the information about John being a serious risk-taker, it felt irrelevant in relation to everything else that happens in the film. And, of course, Siddique can always be counted on to play the father who later changes his tune after all that whining about his son not spending enough time with his family.
The film scores highly in the final act when the killer's identity gets revealed through a clever — but familiar — trick of misdirection. When John confronts the antagonist, who seems more formidable than initially assumed, things get suitably heavier. You begin to feel that John is in real danger.
I wouldn't call John Luther an earth-shattering piece of cinema, but it succeeds in its aim of keeping one engaged for two hours. However, when you compare it to films like Drishyam 2 and Antakshari and think of the novelty factor, it comes up short.

'John Luther' review: Jayasurya puts up an impressive show in Abhijit Joseph's dark thriller
In Jayasuryas earlier outings, we had seen the actor in his emotional best -- an alcoholic struggling in life, a speech-impaired RJ and a successful footballer who loses the struggle to depression.
However, in Abhijith Joseph's 'John Luther', he does not exhibit much of these emotions but focuses on being a tough cop determined to do his job at hand.
The movie, set largely in the foothills of Munnar, begins with a bang, wasting no time telling the audience that the movie will be packed with suspense. It follows a bus navigating a hairpin curve which is forced to stop midway when the driver and passengers hear an unexpected sound, resembling a tyre burst. However, the scene turns dark when the passengers find a dead body on top of the vehicle.
Qalb: A touching narrative that explores love in seven stages | Movie review
Sunny movie review: An arresting tale of a man lost and forlorn amid pandemic
We are soon informed there were two people involved in the accident, which led to one person falling on the bus. The other person, however, goes missing. Circle inspector John Luther( Jayasurya), who is investigating a political murder bid in the area, takes charge of the case. The inspector begins tracking each clue, leading him on a wild goose chase in the initial scenes.
He soon starts to pick up pieces, when a series of other man-missing cases start piling up under his jurisdiction. Deepak Parambol as police inspector Felix, is also involved in the investigation.
However, by this time, the script begins to falter as the director tries to include a lot of plots into one main narrative. It is a challenge for a debutant and Abhjith has to be appreciated for trying, but his attempt to helm an investigative thriller on a big canvas seems to be a burden on himself and the viewers. If the movie had begun with a bang, it wastes a lot of time trying to find closure, resulting in a lag, despite a decent number of twists and turns.
The subject is not fresh and does not stand out as man-missing cases and serial murders have become fodder for Malayalam cinema a lot of times in the recent past. However, it attains some novelty when John Luther becomes partially deaf due to an incident during the investigation. How he manages to solve the case despite his disability is interesting to watch.
Jayasurya has not failed to impress, but his usual magic seems to be missing in the movie, which requires him to have a tougher demeanour. His expressions are, however, spot-on. Deepak Parambol gets the chance to improve his range as he does a good job as a police inspector. As John Luther's father, Siddique does a brilliant job. Though Dhrishya Raghunadh (John's sister) and Athmeeya Rajesh (John's wife) have little to do they deliver their roles convincingly. The background score is effective though it tends to be jarring at times.
Apart from some loopholes and a story which may sound repetitive, heading to the theatres to watch the movie won't seem like a bad idea.

Abhijith Joseph's cop-thriller 'John Luther', starring Jayasurya, has some good ideas that are let down by the writing
John Luther Movie Cast & Crew
It's strange how two films released the same week are so similar, yet so different. Rajeev Ravi's Kuttavum Shikshayum is about cops investigating a case. Broadly speaking, that is exactly what John Luther is about. What differs is the approach. Rajeev Ravi dives deep in, with a ton of procedural detail, while Abhijith Joseph is content to stay on the surface and deliver simple twists and simple thrills. Of course, there is no right or wrong approach to a subject. I was just surprised at this coincidence between the two films. Taken together, they would make an excellent demonstration of a mainstream and hero-centric way of looking at things, versus a slightly offbeat but more holistic way of looking at things. Kuttavum Shikshayum is the better movie, while John Luther is probably the better audience-pleaser.
The film is set in the beautiful Munnar area, and in a nice bit of writing, we witness an accident that we think will form the basis of the story. But the director, who also wrote the screenplay, has other ideas. None of these can be revealed, so let's look at the protagonist, the cop played by Jayasurya. When we first see him, he is being treated for a wound. How did he get that wound? There is no answer, because there is no need. His line of work is going to result in several such wounds. This is just one of them. This wound does not need a backstory.
One of the nicer touches in John Luther is that cops work on many cases at the same time. So one case impacts Jayasurya in one way, which, in turn, impacts the way he handles another case, which goes back to the accident at the beginning of the movie. The cleverest touch is something that happens to Jayasurya, something that hinders his job. There's a terrific "hero moment" when Jayasurya digests this news from the doctor – and we go back to his introduction scene with the wound. This is just another wound. Jayasurya is wonderful at conveying resolve. There's not an iota of sadness or self-pity. The work must go on.
That's part of his mental makeup, and that's the part his upper-class family hates. He is never there for family functions. He is an absentee son, an absentee husband. All this should result in an emotional wallop, but these scenes are among the weakest in the movie. They are filled with cliches – there isn't one novel idea. Plus, this family angle disappears entirely after a point, so it would have made no difference if the Jayasurya character had remained single, or an orphan. I suppose they wanted some sentimental scenes, but surely this could have been achieved in more organic ways, without reducing the intensity of a thriller. After all, we discover that this film also has a psycho-killer. And a major twist.
This writing in this part – that is, the psycho-killer part – is worse than the writing of the family scenes. It all happens quickly and unconvincingly, in the last half-hour, and the film really falls apart. The team gets a lead. The lead gives them the entire flashback, motivation and all. There's a twist. All this is so devoid of character development that there is nothing we can do but wait for the inevitable conclusion. By the end, we have a film with some decent ideas but the writing doesn't know how to push them forward in an interesting manner. Even Jayasurya’s latest “wound” doesn’t render him as vulnerable as it should. John Luther is an easy watch, but where's the uneasy feeling in the pit of the stomach you get from a really good thriller?

It totally misses the point.
Only read this if u have watched the movie or if u don’t mind spoilers( I wouldn’t recommend this movie nor would I restrain someone from watching this):
If u plan to write a thriller either have a proper story in mind or a concept that would be fitting to be told as a thriller. U cannot mix everything together and ask the audience to be engaging in any way. John Luther tries to create this daddy issue related drama plot in the first 1 hour of the movie. They introduce the main murders parallel as well. Then the hearing loss thing happens. From their the movie doesn’t know what to do. Chela sceneil family…

Malayalam cinema has been churning out thriller after thriller lately, with just a few making it to the list of memorable ones. John Luther is pretty engaging when it sticks to its procedural elements, and a monotonous drag when it goes off course to cater to familial sentiments. Jayasurya is in fine form as the titular cop character investigating a series of missing cases. After a mixed first half which is 50% procedural and 50% family drama, the second half is primarily focused around nabbing the perpetrator. Though an incident renders John mostly deaf throughout the second half, we don't see the screenplay offering any major challenges for him or his investigation. A late misdirecting twist only serves the purpose…

Funny movie So they had a basic 1hour so called psycho thriller plot (athil last 30 min is like climax) and they thought what to do with other 1 hour or so, let's make the lead lose is hearing. Also fuck weird blue lights and blue grading in movies now it's time for black and white era for night shots.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Decided to watch this in the theatre, because dad loves Jayasurya. And undoubtedly - he had a good time! But I wasn’t ready for the violence here. I’ve begun to realize that I cannot stomach as much blood and gore as before (like what was that scene with a human brain in a manjappai 🤮).
Also what is with this post-Ratsasan era cinematic form with the slow-mo + staccato violins + close-up frames? Heightens so much drama that is not in service of moving the plot forward (like those zoom focus on mobile phones ringing inside cars; or the many extended drone shots).
The final reveal and the intentional misdirection were well done, I thought (but also who goes into…

When I saw the title and the trailer, I pretty much knew what I was in for. And this movie isn't a lot different from that. It's a basic generic thriller which feels a bit flat in terms of progression, but I gotta say, for the director's debut film, pretty cool. The cinematography is pretty great and they've succeeded in producing some cool shots in here. The writing, although not bad is sort of caught in the line between 'good' complex and 'messy' complex. And sometimes it does feel like the messy part is trying to take over. Fortunately, that feeling doesn't last long. Jayasurya as usual is pretty nice as the titular John Luther. His character has trouble hearing…
