What's Your Question?

What Is Project Management?
A project is an undertaking by one or more people to develop and create a service, product or goal. Project management is the process of overseeing, organizing and guiding an entire project from start to finish. Here are more facts about project management.
Project Management Helps Teams Work Together
A competent project manager pulls together all of the people involved in a project to ensure that tasks are done cooperatively and with regard to the tasks’ effects on other people’s project outcomes. For example, when a new building is being constructed, a project manager will schedule electrical wiring installation before scheduling installation of light fixtures and electrical equipment. If the lighting crew is scheduled before the structure is wired, the lighting crew wastes time arriving on site only to find they can’t perform their work.
Project managers also schedule meetings between various teams to foster cooperation and increased communication about projects. In the example above, the project manager may schedule a meeting during which the electricians explain the wiring, wall-switch operation and receptacle layout to the lighting contractors. Both teams communicate their needs and concerns to help the project move forward without delays.
Project Management Performs Vital Processes
According to the Project Management Institute, five main management processes are used to see a project through to completion. The five processes are:
- Monitoring and controlling
At the initiating phase, key individuals share ideas about a proposed project. In the planning stages, the project is defined and schedules are created to complete the project in a defined time frame. Execution of the project requires organizing and scheduling supplies, materials and workers to complete the project. Monitoring and controlling in project management is the process of inspecting work, crunching budget numbers and keeping track of deadlines. Closing the project involves site cleanup, turning over the project to the owner, collecting payments and scheduling meetings to discuss the lessons learned from a project.
Project Management Focuses on Key Areas of Knowledge
Project management draws on a diverse set of skills. While project managers don’t need to have in-depth knowledge of all key skill areas, they do need to have a basic understanding of the limitations and concerns of each knowledge area. Project managers need to view a project in its entirety and understand the relationships between costs, quality, supply procurement, human resources, communication, risk management and stakeholder management.
Project Management Requires Document Management
A competent project manager organizes all documentation including invoices, e-mails, bids, proposals, permits, and project changes. The project manager ensures documents are submitted on time and to the correct businesses, agencies or individuals. The project manager is also responsible for secure storage of all project documents.
Project Management Helps Meet Goals
Project management is a relatively new field of practice and study but has become a proven method to meet lofty goals and bring diverse groups of people together for a common purpose.

- Which institution issues the verified certificate? Certificates are issued by edX under the name of RITx and are delivered online through edx.org.
- Will I earn a separate certificate for each course or just one for the entire MicroMasters program? You will receive an individual verified certificate for each Project Management MicroMasters program course that you pass as a verified student. Students successfully completing all three Project Management MicroMasters program courses on a verified track will receive a MicroMasters program certificate.
- Is there any way to reduce the time needed to take and pass the three online courses? Yes. Since the courses are self-paced, you may progress through them at your own pace as long as all graded activities are completed by the course close date. To earn the Project Management MicroMasters program certificate you need to successfully earn a verified certificate in all three Project Management MicroMasters program courses.
- Do I need to be a verified student to earn the Project Management MicroMasters program certificate? Yes. If you are interested in the Project Management MicroMasters program certificate, you must successfully pass and receive a verified certificate in each of the three Project Management MicroMasters program courses (PM9001x, PM9002x and PM9003x) as well as successfully pass the final capstone exam.
- May I take one of the courses even though I have not taken its prerequisite? Completing the listed prerequisites or ensuring equivalent understanding of the knowledge of the prerequisites is strongly recommended in order to be successful in the course work.
- How will having the Project Management MicroMasters program certificate change the admissions process for the Master’s degree program at RIT? Having the MicroMasters program certificate provides the admissions committee with significant insight into a student’s capabilities through the completion of three online courses. Also, if admitted, students with the MicroMasters program certificate may opt to complete the masters online or on campus at a pace that best suits his/her learning needs.
- Along with the three Project Management MicroMasters program courses, are there any other requirements in order to be eligible for the RIT Master’s degree? Yes. The Learner will need to complete the application process to RIT and the School of Individualized Study in order to be considered for either program. For more information visit: http://www.rit.edu/ritonline/ritx/micromasters/project-management-pathways
- What is the difference between the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) and the MicroMasters program certificate? The PMI PMP certification is an industry recognized certification that is managed and awarded by the Project Management Institute. The PMP has more stringent pre-requisite requirements than the Project Management MicroMasters program and is therefore not an available option to many learners that are new to the project management field but are seeking a credential in the project management field that will be recognized globally. The Project Management MicroMasters program certificate will enable students toward their PMP, if desired, by providing project management education to be used to gain the multi-year experience requirement required by PMI.

Recommended education or work experience in organizational behavior, mathematics and basic accounting or equivalent.
- Who can take this program? Unfortunately, learners residing in one or more of the following countries or regions will not be able to register for this program: Iran, Cuba and the Crimea region of Ukraine. While edX has sought licenses from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to offer our courses to learners in these countries and regions, the licenses we have received are not broad enough to allow us to offer this program in all locations. edX truly regrets that U.S. sanctions prevent us from offering all of our courses to everyone, no matter where they live.

Please refer to the syllabus of each course for the list of topics covered. The level of difficulty will be comparable to the homework problems in each course.
- The Capstone Exam is an opportunity for you to review extensively and connect the perspectives on the same topics from different courses. Hence, unlike the in course homework and exams, there may be some questions that mix concepts from different courses.
- The Capstone Exams are much closer to in-class exams, when you will be tested on the knowledge that you have internalized. They are comprehensive, and you will need to think quickly.

No, earning a MicroMasters program credential does not guarantee admission to a full master's degree program. If you apply and are accepted into the on-campus or online master of science in professional studies, the MicroMasters program credential will count toward the degree. To successfully earn a MicroMasters program credential you must finish all courses/exams/projects with a B or equivalent grade and earn verified certificates for each course. You must also have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, and satisfy all other application requirements.
Does every MicroMasters program certificate count as the same number of credits towards a master’s degree?
The number of credits offered varies across MicroMasters programs. RIT reviews the curriculum of each MicroMasters program to determine the number of credits to be counted toward the master of science in professional studies.
Can I use credit from more than one MicroMasters program toward this degree?
You may apply credit from two MicroMasters programs as long as one is an RITx MicroMasters program.
How do I apply?
Your admissions advisor looks forward to working with you as you explore this graduate degree at RIT. If you have any questions about the application or admission process you may contact her at any time. You can start your application by visiting www.rit.edu/apply .
The application is fairly easy to work through, and you can share your edX program record with RIT so we can add that to your application, which will speed up your application process.
