Research at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) is grounded in the belief that many of the key challenges and opportunities of our era require cooperation among the arts, humanities, and sciences and among the academy, industry, civil society and the public sector.

Unprecedented demands are affecting our cities and infrastructure, the environment, and our society as a whole. Today’s complex issues require an unconventional but cooperative approach that can transcend disciplines and produce change at all levels—not only for the spaces in which we live, but also for our approach to art, technology, business, education, and more. Our innovations are producing practical solutions to quandaries in urbanization, environment and technology – from geographic information systems to designing the future of cities. We hope you will visit the individual webpages of our research units to learn about the ambitious and rapidly expanding research agenda of the GSD and its transformative power.

Research and Teaching

At the GSD, research and teaching go hand in hand. The School’s collective research initiatives begin with the individual endeavors of faculty and students and are strongly integrated in our pedagogical mission. We supplement our core design pedagogy with research that addresses global issues, both in traditional building fields and entrepreneurial ventures. We reach beyond the limits of our core disciplines to collaborate across sectors, including business, technology, the arts, health, public policy, and more. In this way, the GSD synthesizes research, teaching and practice in a collaborative, holistic approach that empowers our community to make a difference around the world.

The GSD builds on a long tradition of ground-breaking innovations. Since its foundation in 1936, the GSD has coupled its excellent professional training with in-depth research activity across a range of fields from history and theory, to technology, environment and design:

  • At the GSD’s Laboratory for Computer Graphics, the first computer mapping systems were developed and evolved into geographic information systems.
  • In the 1960s, the Joint Center for Urban Studies with MIT brought together urban planners, architects and social scientists to think through the future of cities and proposed the designs for many localities, including Ciudad Guyana in Venezuela.
  • A Synthesis of Form, Christopher Alexander’s seminal dissertation, was written at the GSD.
  • Eduard Sekler’s work with the UNESCO on preservation in Nepal has provided a template for preservation of public spaces across the world.

Continuing with this tradition, our Research Centers, Design Labs, Programs and Initiatives are creating a critical mass of inquiry and research. Unique in their focus, each builds ties with experts in their fields, with implications for policy, practice, and society at large. This is done across disciplines, both within the University and with external institutions, organizations, and individuals.

Our goal is to prepare the next generation of design leaders who will address increasingly complex issues around the world and the School’s research platform is providing our faculty and students with a global forum to make transformative contributions through design, from insights in ecological urbanism and city-making to advancements in representation and the future of technology.  By focusing our attention, intellect, resources and mission through the lens of research at the GSD, we aim to improve the human experience, and improve it by design.

Research Excellence at Vanderbilt

Graduate education at Vanderbilt prepares the next generations of academic leaders by paving the way for doctoral students to intensely focus on the quest to pursue new ways of seeing and shaping in the world. Graduate students team up with world-class faculty across campus to create discoveries that will shape the future.

Interdisciplinary Research

Below is a sample of interdisciplinary programs, institutes, and research groups.

Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Materials Science Students design their curriculum spanning the fields of engineering, chemistry, physics, and medicine.

Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities  is a place where faculty and students from the humanities, social sciences, and when appropriate, the natural sciences gather to share ideas and teach one another. The Warren Center also engages in outreach to the community by sponsoring teacher training, lectures and seminars, and publications designed to promote the importance of the humanities in today's world.

The Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy  supports research and programming that address the five primary sources of cultural policy in the United States: the decisions of individual actors in the arts industries; corporate practice; trade agreements and regulatory agencies; the passions and objectives of private arts patrons and NGOs; and intellectual property law.

The Biomathematics Research Group  brings together mathematicians and scientists to conduct research on problems in developmental biology, cancer research, infectious diseases, pharmacology, the clinical sciences, molecular biophysics, genetics, and the neurosciences.

Here is a complete list of Vanderbilt University's Centers and Institutes .

Responsible Conduct of Research

As a premier academic and research institution, Vanderbilt University has an obligation to model, teach, and actively promote the responsible conduct of research in scholarship and science. Research integrity is crucial for exceptional research and is seen as a vital part of training, regardless of funding source.

The  National Institutes of Health  (NIH) and the  National Science Foundation  (NSF) require that all those engaged in either NIH- or NSF-funded research must also be educated in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). Vanderbilt has developed programs to meet these requirements and to ensure that its students, faculty, and staff, as appropriate, understand the issues surrounding the RCR, and their obligations as individuals and members of the larger research community.

Vanderbilt's approach to RCR training incorporates online and discussion-based content based on the individual's experience level and discipline. The RCR series covers core norms, principles, regulations, and rules governing the practice of research. All graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in certain departments are expected to complete training in responsible conduct of research (RCR). In addition, depending upon the program in which the student or trainee is enrolled, they may have additional RCR requirements for ongoing training.

Note: The RCR training at Vanderbilt fulfills both the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation requirements.

This page and the information contained within it  only apply to Vanderbilt graduate students and postdoctoral scholars . For information that relates to RCR training and requirements for Vanderbilt faculty, individuals should contact the schools in which the faculty member is appointed.

Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Vanderbilt offers research opportunities to both Vanderbilt and other institution's undergraduate students. These programs, whether campus-wide like the Vanderbilt Summer Research Program (VUSRP) or department-specific like the Physics Department's Research Experience for Undergraduates (PA-REU) have four primary goals:

  • To provide a substantive research experience that will allow each student to actively participate in a research project including reading the relevant literature, developing ideas, and communicating findings to colleagues.
  • To provide enrichment seminars that will help construct a strong foundation on which to build science, social science, and humanistic careers.
  • To create opportunities for student-faculty interaction beyond the classroom and facilitate mentor relationships for students who wish to pursue research and academic careers.
  • To provide guidance and preparation for application to graduate schools.

Some Vanderbilt research programs that should be of particular interest to underrepresented students include:

The Physics and Astronomy department , the  Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology (VICB)  , and the Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (ViNSE) offer Research Experiences For Undergraduates (REU) funded by the National Science Foundation. These programs provide opportunities for visiting students to work closely with faculty, post-doctoral students, and our graduate students on forefront research projects in those fields. The Physics & Astronomy program offers research opportunities in everything from astrophysics to particle and high-energy nuclear physics.

The Biomedical Engineering program targets students majoring in a number of disciplines including Science Education, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Graphics Arts, Physical Sciences, Engineering, or Learning Sciences. VICB targets junior and senior chemistry, biochemistry, and biology majors who have high potential to succeed in chemical biology research areas. The coordinators for all these programs are particularly interested in diversifying their fields and strongly encourage applications for underrepresented racial minorities and women.

The Vanderbilt Undergraduate Summer Research Program (VUSRP)  offers a ten-week summer research experience for up to 50 Vanderbilt undergraduates who express a serious interest in pursuing a Ph.D. and following a career in college or university teaching and research. The purpose of the program is to motivate and prepare students to make competitive applications to research doctoral programs, with a view toward completing the Ph.D. and going on to teach and conduct original research. Each student receives a $4000 stipend to support their living in Nashville during the summer months. A poster session, open to the Vanderbilt community, is held in the Fall featuring the work done by VUSRP participants.

Vanderbilt is a member of The Leadership Alliance , a consortium of 31 institutions of higher learning dedicated to increasing diversity in doctoral programs and on college and university faculties. The Alliance collaborates in a number of programs, from undergraduate research to national symposia, to increase the participation of historically underrepresented groups in higher education.

Vanderbilt is a participant in the Alliance's Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) and maintains a summer research program for undergraduates who are racial/ethnic minorities, women in the sciences and engineering majors, or who are from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Students accepted for Vanderbilt's Leadership Alliance group will work with a Vanderbilt faculty member as a research assistant in either a laboratory project or a research project appropriate to a humanities or social science field.  Access the SR-EIP application here.

The Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy (VSSA) offers biomedical research opportunities to undergraduates who want to pursue a career in the biomedical sciences. Although each of the participating programs operates independently, the Academy unites students and provides them with opportunities for academic and social interaction.

Participation in the Academy serves as a valuable learning experience that enhances a student's skills and makes them more competitive for acceptance to frontline graduate programs. While each of the programs actively recruits underrepresented students, the Vascular Biology Program targets minority students and operates in conjunction with the Meharry Medical College. More information about the Academy programs can be found at the  VSSA Website .

Admissions Requirements

Please review admissions requirements and other information before applying. You can find degree program-specific admissions requirements below and access additional guidance on applying from the Department of Psychology .

Academic Background

While an undergraduate concentration in psychology is not required, some social science coursework is recommended. Because the program is heavily quantitatively oriented, college-level math and statistics are also advised. Research experience is extremely helpful; successful applicants have often worked for professors, done research projects as part of college courses, written an undergraduate thesis, or volunteered in a psychology research lab.

Please Note: Before making the decision to apply, the program in Psychology suggests checking individual faculty/lab websites or emailing faculty directly to inquire whether they plan to consider applicants for Fall 2024 admission. It’s important to note that while individual faculty members may have every intention of bringing in a new student this year, we cannot guarantee that they will all be able to do so. The total number of offers of admission to be extended by the graduate program is based on applicant preparedness and fit, availability of university advising and support resources, and target class size. Some of these factors are not able to be determined until after the applicant pool has been finalized.

Graduate School Strategies: What is Academic Research?

  • January 28, 2022

Kathryn Starke

Home Educators Blog

What is Academic Research?

Academic research is a systematic approach to increase knowledge on a particular subject matter or topic. The deep exploration and study of a specific topic found through academic research are often used to explain particular facts, misconceptions, and opinions of a relevant topic about a field of study.

A person’s academic research is most often associated with a master’s degree , doctoral program , or professional contribution to journals, conferences, or internships.

Why is Academic Research Important in Graduate School?

Academic research is essential in graduate school because it is often the culminating project or final paper submitted to support a candidate’s complete understanding of a topic within a graduate program. The actual academic research usually takes a year or more to complete in addition to a two-year to five-year time period in an in-person or online program, depending on the field of study and amount of coursework required.

Academic research often indicates or proves that a candidate is qualified to be a leader in their field of study while also representing the graduate school. Academic research is an in-depth critical analysis of statistics, observations, literature, case studies, and theories closely related to a graduate school candidate’s professional interests and career path.

More often than not, the academic research conducted in graduate school is later published in a trade publication or periodical. It can also be submitted and used as a research-based presentation at a professional trade or industry conference. Sometimes, it is even used later to write and publish a book on the subject matter. In this instance, graduate school is the driving force behind academic research.

How Do I Know if Something is Credible?

Several factors can be used to determine if academic research is credible . The first question to ask is why the study was chosen in the first place to fully examine. Then, ask a variety of inquiry-based questions to support the reason behind the research:

  • What is the purpose of the research?
  • Why was this research so important to conduct?
  • How relevant is this research?

It is important to identify the credentials of the person conducting the research, what school is backing or supporting the academic research, and if any particular organization or institution funds the research.

The sample size of the case study and the data collected are important to review for credibility in addition to understanding the measures and said outcomes of the conducted research. Finally, peer-reviewed and trusted resources are a good indicator of credible sources.

Academic Research Tips: How to Find Trustworthy Research

When an individual is completing the actual research, it is imperative to ensure that trustworthy research is available to help create a substantial research paper to present. One of the best ways to do this is to be skeptical about everything you read. The tips to finding trustworthy research are similar to determining if something is indeed credible. Peer-reviewed papers and highly ranked trusted institutions and organizations often produce and publish the most trustworthy research.

Reviewing the identity of the researcher conducting the academic research and their credentials of the person conducting the research is vital to locate trustworthy research. Find out if a particular school, organization, or institution is backing, supporting, or funding the academic research.

Depending on the industry, a various institutions and organizations are nationally and internationally recognized as trustworthy research sources in their field. Check the sources cited by the author of the research as well. In addition to reviews, check if the research received any awards, accolades, testimonials, or endorsements.

Visit a university library, public library, or academic research library to begin the research process. Google Scholar is an online search that is primarily focused on housing academic journals, articles, and publications on a particular subject matter. Finding trustworthy research begins by finding and selecting relevant articles, journals, and publications that address the topic a student or candidate is researching.

It is recommended that sources published within the past ten years are the most reliable and relevant materials for up-to-date and current research. An exception would be when you are looking for historical pedagogy or theories to support the present-day research.

Once you find, read, and critically analyze the research that you have found, it is time to use it effectively to share and present your research. Organize and communicate information in a manner that allows you to write and express your research efficiently. Finally, you present and defend your research to your committee within the graduate program.

The ultimate goal of academic research is to make an impact, create a solution to a problem, or better a system within your industry or organization. When academic research can be implemented for a positive outcome, the purpose of completing the academic research in the first place is validated.

How to Find the Right Graduate School: 10 Tips for Researching Grad Schools

January 12, 2022.

Written by SHU Graduate Admissions Team

A common trap students often fall into when applying to graduate school is insufficient background research. Given the pricey and time-consuming nature of most graduate degrees, you really owe it to yourself to make an informed and carefully thought-out decision when choosing between grad school programs and putting together your application. Here are tips on how to research graduate programs and find the right grad school.

You can also download our free resource, Your Journey to Graduate School: The Prospective Student Toolkit, to learn more about the graduate school process!

Keep your career in mind

Career goals should be top of mind when choosing a degree program — or deciding whether to attend graduate school at all. You're not taking out thousands of dollars in student loans to dine at the best campus cafeterias in the land. For grad students, academic experience is paramount, and your career goals will impact what you look for in a program. If you want a master's degree to give you that professional edge, then the overall quality of the faculty may be more important than finding the ideal mentor.

If you are aiming for a doctoral degree, however, finding a specific professor to serve as your thesis advisor trumps the talents of the faculty at large. Apply to schools that have one or more professors who do research in your general area of interest, and with whom you can imagine working closely.

Talk to people in the industry

It's important to talk to people in the industry to get an understanding of what skills and experience you need to pursue your desired career, and to also get a sense of how they view particular types of graduate programs. To connect with the right people, attend networking events for your industry or talk to industry associations.

Talk to current students and alumni

The importance of doing this cannot be stressed enough. Create a list of a few questions for both students and alumni. Ask around to find currently enrolled or recently graduated individuals. Contact them and request a few minutes of their time. Ask them to be completely candid with you. What you hear might surprise you and may be extremely helpful.

Preview the Program’s Facilities

Depending on your research project and discipline, you might need to have access to various pieces of technology or special library collections. Researching the facilities will help you decide whether to pick school X over school Y, as well as make a convincing case in your application. When applying to grad school, it's absolutely crucial that you sound as specific and focused as possible, and referring to specialized facilities will help you achieve this.

Explore the Course structure

Each university will implement its own program and course structure, and you may find that one is better aligned with your interests than others. Take a look at the curriculum outlined on the school’s website. It might also be worth shooting off an email to the department leader, or other faculty members, to get a better sense of the course's theoretical framework and overall structure.

Visit the campus

Do you know what it would feel like to be on campus? If you don't do a campus visit , you won't know. You could be unpleasantly surprised when you show up for orientation, but by then it's too late. Keep in mind that you'll be on campus nearly every day for the next one to two years, if not longer. Ask yourself: Will the physical and cultural environments be something with which you are comfortable? Are the facilities up to date? Will you feel at home there?

Ensure Accreditation

It's important that the graduate school has the appropriate accreditation. For example, in social work, if programs are not approved by the accrediting body for social work, the Council on Social Work Education, they may jeopardize being eligible for certain licensure and employment opportunities and even the ability to call themselves social workers after they graduate. Ensure that your chosen graduate school has accredited programs.

Review admission and application requirements

As you research your graduate school, consider what the admission requirements for your programs of interest are. Some schools may require standardized test scores (ex: GRE,GMAT, LSAT, TOEFL). Within this group, some of these schools may have high minimum scores, which may require you to be more diligent about practice exams and test preparation. On the other hand, some programs will have no test requirements at all.

Additionally, some doctoral programs may only accept candidates who already have a Master's, while others have a program where you earn your Master's while ultimately working towards your doctoral. These elements are important to research so that you are not investing valuable time on unnecessary applications or application components.

Consider your finances

Decide what you can afford for graduate school, and don't forget to factor in both the up-front costs, such as tuition, textbooks, and hidden fees, such as transportation and student activity costs. While your education is an investment, make sure you can cover the costs associated with earning your graduate degree. Paying for graduate school can seem intimidating, but there are many different options available to you.

While you narrow down your list of schools, be sure to check out the financial aid options at each institution. Along with scholarships, grants and loans, some schools may offer assistantships or fellowships for graduate students. For those who may already be working in their industry, your employer may offer tuition reimbursement which pays for a predetermined amount of continuing education credits or college coursework to be applied toward a degree. Contact your company's human resources department to determine whether tuition reimbursement is available to you and if your program of interest meets the eligibility requirements.

All of these options will help ease the costs associated with your education and could help you earn valuable experience to enhance your resume. You may also want to consider your future earning potential and job opportunities when weighing your options—you want your degree to be worth the money, time, and energy you put into earning it.

Confirm the program's delivery type

Some programs are conducted entirely online, while others are hybrid, or a combination of online and on-campus components. If a program is delivered in a hybrid format, you should consider whether you're able to travel to campus as often as required while also juggling your other responsibilities.

Master's Student: The clinical mental health counseling program has been great in emphasizing the importance of cultural competence in the counseling space. I have been able to collaborate with an amazing group of peers that make up my cohort to face challenges and concerns that arise in regard to the field of counseling. I have had some great professors who do their best to ensure we have the knowledge we need to be successful. However, there have been some adjunct professors who have other obligations that take away their time from providing feedback in a timely fashion and prolong receiving grades back for assignments. There have also been major changes in faculty that affect our ability to know what professor we will have when registering for the next semester. ... Read 20 reviews

Master's Student: So far I’m almost a year into NYU Steinhardt’s online speech program and I love it! For those who don’t mind online learning and can time manage, this is for you. It gives me more flexibility and encourages me to stay on top of asynchronous work for my zoom meets. Another big plus about this program and why I chose it is that I did not graduate with a bachelor’s in speech or CSD. This program offers most prerequisite classes that extend your plan of study but is so worth it. The only down side is the prerequisites required by ASHA cannot be taken through their program. So while I have taken statistics, a biological and behavioral /social science during my undergrad I will need to take a physical science outside of the program before I start my clinic/practicums. Overall, many of my peers seem to enjoy the program too and even though the program is online for me, the helpfulness and acceptance from professors is truly unmatched. ... Read 25 reviews

As a first year student, I have felt welcomed and valued as a student. The university allows students to learn while doing as they have the opportunity to work with sports teams at all levels and ages, while shadowing peers and superiors. Students are also encouraged to venture out and find clients and athletes to work with on their own, while being supported by the faculty and peers at Florida State. The program is also very conducive to a supportive social environment, with socials, networking opportunities, and peer support being ever-present. Master's Student: The Master's in School Counseling program at The George Washington University (GWU) is fast-paced, well-structured, and rigorous. Among the positive aspects that drew me to this program include the opportunity for students to become certified as a school counselor and/or a licensed professional counselor. Moreover, there are four different practicum experiences in the program, including internships in elementary, middle, and high school settings, as well as the GWU counseling center that serves students and members of the community --which can help students identify which certification may work best for them. And the fast-paced, year-round structure of the program allows students to complete the program in two years. The classes in the program, however, require submission of several papers, which may be challenging for students who prefer exams or projects. Moreover, all classes are scheduled at night. ... We invest in our graduate students, providing financial support via assistantships, fellowships, tuition support and health insurance coverage to more than 3,300 master’s and doctoral students. This funding frees students to focus on the hands-on research that makes the NC State graduate experience exceptional.

That experience prepares our graduate students to take the next step, whether they’re going to work in their given fields, pursuing further study, or joining academia to shape the next generation of thinkers and doers.

Work With World Leaders

Our faculty features world-leading minds. Our 2,850-member graduate faculty includes 23 National Academies members and scholars who’ve earned honors from the White House, NASA and the National Science Foundation.

On the global stage, these researchers are recognized leaders. On campus, they’re the mentors who guide graduate students every day. Graduate students and faculty members work together across disciplines, forming relationships that support our graduates into their careers. In our 160+ graduate programs, faculty experts help students reach their potential — and exceed it.

The grand challenges don’t conform to traditional disciplinary boundaries, and neither does our approach to research. Our pioneering faculty clusters program brings together researchers from across the academic spectrum in 20 emerging interdisciplinary fields such as bioinformatics, translational regenerative medicine, genetic engineering and society, and carbon electronics. The faculty clusters program brings together graduate students to break disciplinary barriers, too.

Powerful Partnerships

No single entity can solve the complicated problems that face our state, nation and world. That’s why NC State is committed to building research partnerships with government, industry, nonprofit and and other educational institutions. Those partnerships give our graduate students access to a rich network of knowledge and professional development resources.

NC State leads seven federal research hubs devoted to six major issues: developing smart energy sources and next-generation power electronics, building nanotech health monitoring devices, confronting climate change, curbing nuclear proliferation and harnessing the power of big data. At those hubs and in more than 60 other interdisciplinary research centers and institutes, doctoral and master’s students are intimately involved in cutting-edge research.

More than 70 government and industry partners keep steady presences on Centennial Campus, NC State’s national-model research campus that promotes public-private collaboration. The quality and expertise of our graduate students are a big part of why those organizations choose to locate here. Policymakers and business leaders want access to the incredibly talented group of students who study here.

NC State is also a partner in the nearby Research Triangle Park, home to 200 industry-leading firms in pharmaceuticals, electronics, telecommunications, biotechnology, chemistry and environmental sciences.

UNC School of Social Work ranked No. 4 best graduate school for social work in the nation

Posted on April 9, 2024

Tied for No. 2 public, No. 4 overall, UNC School of Social Work is recognized alongside a score of Carolina programs ranked Top 10 in the nation in their respective categories by the magazine.

Months after being ranked fourth in national research and development (R&D) expenditures among R1 higher education institutions, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work earned another No. 4 ranking today.

The School of Social Work moved up three spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” rankings , rising to a tie for fourth in the nation among the 319 surveyed social work schools accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education.

The School ranked No. 1 among schools of social work across the Southeast and tied for second nationally among public universities.

Dean Ramona Denby-Brinson said being ranked second among all public university social work programs was especially meaningful due to the school’s responsibility to serve local, national and global communities.

“Our new national ranking is exciting news,” Denby-Brinson said. “Among many measures of success, the ranking recognizes the tremendous contributions of our faculty and staff. Our MSW (Master of Social Work) program is preparing practitioners, researchers and advocates who improve life for thousands of people each day. We are honored to be recognized by our peers for the excellence displayed by our faculty in all they do.”

Executive Vice Provost Amy Locklear Hertel, a clinical assistant professor at the School, said “The UNC School of Social Work is a true asset on campus, to our state, and the globe. By drawing our attention to pressing issues of our most vulnerable populations, to developing strong communities and systems, to informing policy as well as practice, the UNC School of Social Work is preparing social service practitioners and researchers to fully ‘advance equity, transform systems, and improves lives’ — just as the School’s mission states.”

She went on to say, “It is an honor to be a clinical faculty member in the School.”

Since arriving at the School as dean in August 2021, Denby-Brinson worked closely with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to establish a strategic plan that helped to elevate the graduate programs, modernize the curriculum, and increase student enrollment by providing access and flexible degree offerings while using advanced learning modalities and proven pedagogical tools.

“Our graduates are prepared to work with individuals, families and communities to solve complex problems,” Denby-Brinson said. “The practice approaches that we teach derive from the impactful research produced by our faculty. We have a strong faculty, and they are tackling entrenched issues and devising real world solutions.”

“I’m delighted to hear this news, and to note that the School has consistently ranked in the Top 10 since 1997,” said Dean Emeritus Jack Richman.

The latest rankings were compiled based on peer assessments from administrators, deans and faculty of accredited degree programs and are compiled on a scale of one (marginal) to five (outstanding). The surveys were sent in fall 2023 and early 2024.
