Senior Associate Director of Employee Engagement and Development

Rice University

  • This position is a full-time position within a hybrid work environment, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. (minimum 4 days in the office per week). Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

  • Familiarity with established change management methodologies, such as Prosci ADKAR (Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, Reinforcement) model or Kotter's 8-Step Process for Leading Change
  • Basic understanding of change management principles and methodologies
  • Agile Learner: Can swiftly acquire new knowledge and skills, with a genuine eagerness to learn, a strong ability to adapt to changing circumstances, and a willingness to try new ways of doing things.

  • Professional work experience in higher education for 3+ years, specifically working as a staff member in the graduate education academic space
  • Experience related to program management and/or staff development/engagement
  • Executive coaching experience and/or certification/license
  • Experience managing organizational development or talent management programs
  • Certification in Change Management (e.g., Prosci, ACMP), Project Management (e.g. CAPM, PMP) or Process Improvement (e.g. Six Sigma)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational, and staff resources
  • Strong knowledge of employee engagement and development strategies and methodologies
  • Experience and familiarity with Rice University software systems, including iO and/or HRIS systems
  • Establish and refresh the blueprint for engagement and development initiatives throughout the Rice Business community by developing strategies, generating buy-in, and implementing consistent programming using data-driven decision-making.
  • Design follow-up actions and initiatives that address opportunities for positive impact to improve employee engagement by conducting stakeholder analyses through interviews, focus groups, and surveys to gather feedback. Drive insightful discussions to further employee connectedness and belonging.
  • Work to define and implement metrics and surveys that further the Rice Business culture of care and our commitment to being attentive, responsive, and kind; identify areas of risk or needed investment in training and development to drive exceptional performance among the staff and track overall success and opportunities for growth.
  • Assess and refine processes to improve the effectiveness of engagement and development initiatives to align with the evolving business needs.
  • Serve as the advisor for Rice Business staff volunteer organizations and resource groups, including but not limited to the Rice Business Network (RBN), Rice Business Staff Council (RBSC), Rice Business Book Club, etc.
  • Spearhead marquee employee-facing events that foster engagement and amplify our people-first culture.
  • Thought leader in professional development with the ability to develop, lead, and coordinate trainings, programs, and activities related to the development of staff members across all levels that are focused on employee experience, engagement, and retention.
  • Work cross-functionally with university-level Human Resource colleagues to ensure open lines of communication and clear distribution of information related to staff engagement and development resources.
  • Prepare and review operational and financial reports relating to managing the division budget.
  • Recommend actions and collaborate in the resolution of complex issues that often span organizational boundaries.
  • Create and deliver clear and compelling communication materials, such as emails, presentations, infographics, websites, and other resources, to convey pertinent information to staff. Drive the case for “what’s in it for me” and develop communication tactics to convey messages.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Serves as an integral member of the Office of Business and Operations, supporting the leadership and direction of the office, helping to drive a service-centered philosophy with all staff members of the Rice Business staff community, and consistently representing the office positively to all members of the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience using data to develop engagement strategies.
  • Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
  • Team-oriented and able to work well in a collaborative environment with a balance between self-motivation and working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to navigate change and work effectively in a matrixed and fast-paced environment.
