Design Academy Eindhoven
Description.
Giving Shape to Your Passion
Imagine receiving one of the following assignments:
“Design a new layout for the square in front of the Eindhoven train station,”
“Find a way of shaping the new luxuriousness,”
“Give someone the gift of time.”
If this is the kind of challenge you dream of, and you are ready to work hard for it, then Design Academy Eindhoven is “the place to be”. In your capacity as a designer, you have a considerable impact on the way the world looks. After all, almost all the things around us have been designed. Designers determine what it is we experience within and about a set of surroundings and how we might behave there. When you graduate, you will be shaping people’s everyday lives. This may vary from jewellery, objects of everyday use, the interior of a home, the way we organize care or how we feel in public space.
The world is a complex place. As a designer, you will have to deal with a range of social, economic, and cultural interests. Think, for instance, of the square in front of the train station in Eindhoven. One person may see it as a social space, a place to meet; another as a site that should be easy to reach by car; and a third may want to give it a cultural and economic function above all else. As a designer, you will operate amid all of these forces and interests. Time and again, you will have to consider the pros and cons. Because each design process will see you stumbling upon dilemmas in the fields of sustainability, aesthetics, user-friendliness, and production costs, you will find yourself facing ethical questions.
How much energy will transportation cost? How do you feel about manufacturing in low-wage countries? Is your design healthy? Assessments for which no manual can be written. The situation will be different every time, and opinions on what is right and advisable will change with time. So as a future designer the main thing is that you have an immense interest in everything that moves people. Or as one of our tutors put it recently: “a designer should know a little bit about a lot of things”.
Design Academy Eindhoven is the only University of Applied Science (HBO) in the Netherlands that is fully specialised in design. In its 65-year history the academy has developed into an internationally leading school for design. At the same time, the city of Eindhoven has become a magnet for the design world. Around 700 Design Academy students, with over 50 different nationalities, are a daily inspiration for one another at the WitteDame building, a disused Philips factory in the city center. The academy exerts a considerable attraction on designers. Many of our alumni establish their businesses in Eindhoven; people like Piet Hein Eek, Ad van Berlo, Kiki van Eijk & Joost van Bleiswijk. And the Strijp district, another part of the former Philips factory grounds, has grown into a creative incubator space. The Graduation Show / Dutch Design Week has mushroomed into a formidable event and the region around Eindhoven has been declared World’s Intelligent Community 2011. In short, Eindhoven now has the ideal climate for the creative entrepreneur.
Area of Studies
Student Life
The Design Academy Eindhoven is home to a community of over 700 students from more than 40 different countries. This diversity is a key element of DAE’s identity and a large factor in its status as one of the world’s most influential design schools. The meeting of nationalities, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities within the school enriches the work of the entire DAE community and helps student designers understand their projects within a global context. This is an institute where debate and difference are always welcome. Many students make life-long friends during their time at the Academy and find that the network of fellow students they form while studying becomes an invaluable part of their professional life after graduation. Students can access many benefits, including the ZBar, an in-house cafeteria that serves affordable and healthy meals during school hours with a constantly changing menu. The ZBar is often staffed by current students. Keep an eye on the jobs page for the latest vacancies. A variety of systems and initiatives are in place to encourage a wide range of applicants and help current students if their circumstances change. The school offers counseling services to support current students through challenges that arise during their studies.DAE also encourages exchanges, offering international students the chance to experience the school’s approach to design for one semester. International students from outside the EU may need visas and residence permits to study in the Netherlands. You can check if you will need a visa or residence permit by using our Pathfinder tool. Admissions for the 2020–2021 academic year are now closed. The admissions process for the 2021–2022 academic year will open on November 1 at 9:00. Due to the current coronavirus regulations, admissions will take place online. Students at DAE are expected to provide their own accommodation while studying in Eindhoven. When the academy was founded, affordable housing was easy to find in Eindhoven. Today, the city has transformed and is becoming increasingly gentrified, making housing a significant issue for many students. We advise incoming students to begin their search early and spread their net wide. More information on this can be found here.
The university does not provide housing, and students are directed to a third party website. Housing near the university ranges from 300 to 600 euros per month.

Design Academy is moving house
Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) will get a new home in the city. The renowned design school will move from its current location in the Witte Dame to Microlab at Strijp-S in 2027. This is necessary because the current location is too small for the education institute.
To this end, the DAE board has signed a letter of intent with the municipality of Eindhoven. Although the parties agree on the location, the financing still needs to be finalised. It is expected that both parties will be able to reach that goal before the end of the year.
Part of the agreement also includes student accommodation. This should help first-year DAE students find their first accommodation in the city, which is certainly not easy for newcomers.
City of design and technology
“This location fits perfectly with our vision of DAE’s evolution. As a school, we need to be able to give our students room to grow. But we are also committed to this city, both practically and emotionally. Eindhoven has a unique position in design and technology that is embedded in the city’s DNA,” said DAE Director of Education Raf De Keninck.
Securing the city’s future
“DAE, as a leading international design institute, plays an important role in this. The city council has given us confidence that the financial gap and housing problems can be solved so that we can move to location Microlab in 2027 and secure DAE’s future in Eindhoven,” De Keninck said.
Creative director of DAE Joseph Grima, too, sees the importance of preserving the training institute for the city. “The history of Design Academy Eindhoven is deeply intertwined with the history of Eindhoven at every level,” said Grima.
Concentration of talent and excellence
“Today, more than ever, Eindhoven represents an extraordinary concentration of talent and excellence in design. We look forward to building on this extraordinary legacy of collaboration with the city to achieve new ambitions in design education, while preserving the identity and soul of this beloved institution.”
D of Design
Alderperson for higher education Monique Esselbrugge also expressed her delight that the DAE will remain Eindhoven. “As a city of technology, design and knowledge, we cherish the D of design. We would like to keep DAE for the city, given its great value for the design ecosystem and Eindhoven’s business climate. DAE designers play a role in the city’s sustainable future. We will do our utmost to realise a nice place for DAE in Microlab at Strijp-S,” said the alderperson.

Mission Statement
Design Academy Eindhoven’s philosophy and methods formerly known as the Academy for Industrial Design Eindhoven (AIVE) we became Design Academy Eindhoven at the end of the 20th century, a change reflecting a number of important developments. The philosophy of the academy was changing, its focus shifting from products to people who actually use them. Reflecting on people and society lies at the core of design education in general and in ours in particular. Design Academy Eindhoven trains students who develop a similar freedom to that of visual-arts designers while at the same time taking account of the requirements imposed on them by society and the opportunities offered to them by the industry. Sometimes the emphasis lies with the power of an idea, sometimes with manufacturing feasibility, functionality and the usefulness a product may have for society. Of course, the finest accomplishments are those which unite all these different aspects! Large and small subjects are covered within the programme, such as the importance of material innovation and technology for new products, the question as to how trademarks can function, the responsibility of designers in terms of ecology and world poverty, concern for products which avoid the transience of the throwaway culture, conceptual design, the revival of traditional techniques in current design, combining trade and industry, daring future visions. In collaboration with (inter)national companies, projects are carried out annually where creativity and manufacturing feasibility produce captivating results. Other projects focus on small-scale non-profit organizations in the Third World. For some leaving the academy, the future lies in the prospect of a design studio, for others in a collaborative effort, for many in the commercial sector, while a few go on to a career in an institute. In short: Design Academy Eindhoven offers young people an excellent diploma for virtually all sectors of society.
International Role
Design Academy Eindhoven has the policy to establish as much exchange possibilities for students as are needed to support their development and study. Therefore a wide range of international collaboration is set out for this goal. However there is only limited space for incoming students. This is why, although we are open to establishing bilateral agreements, we do have our own selection procedure. Also because our course has a slightly different approach in comparison to most design courses.
National Role
Design Academy Eindhoven is a favourable partner in national, international and regional context. In collaboration with (inter)national companies, the so-called Friends of the academy, projects are carried out annually where creativity and manufacturing feasibility produce captivating results. The Design Academy is local partner in Brainport Eindhoven, an important regional development on Innovation and Knowledge Economy; Parties such as the Ministry of Economics and of Foreign Affairs consult the academy on the importance of design for the future development and innovation. Universities, such as TU/e, TU Delft, University of Wageningen and others seek collaboration having to do with our vision and the effects of this on the output of our students.

These focus on collaborative, research-driven and interdisciplinary projects around specific themes or subjects, bringing together teams of specialists and researchers from academia, industry and the design community.

The world is changing rapidly, and the design profession is also changing with it. Design Academy Eindhoven considers educational innovation, the development of knowledge and research to be of paramount importance. Our academy will therefore respond to and capitalise on the changes by embedding current themes and developments as effectively as possible in the curriculum and the organisation of the education it provides. Design Academy Eindhoven believes that curiosity and openness, to ideas and to people, is a vital part of design. We are a design school, a place where individuals are educated in what they bring to the world and guided to find their own way. We take students concerns, talents and authentic responses to the world and show them how to make the most of themselves and uncover their purpose. To do so we need to provide new tools, new areas of expertise and a broader set of design and research skills. We as a school are a guide in the journey of identifying and developing each individual's motivation and strengths. We give each of them a platform to go out into the world and connect, creating design that has meaning and impact.

5x Recent alumni of Design Academy Eindhoven
Design Academy Eindhoven is a leading international design school for creative and critical minds. Well-known students from the past are Piet Hein Eek, Kiki & Joost and Maarten Baas. But what did more recent alumni do after they graduated? Meet five designers who graduated from DAE in the past ten years.
Irene Stracuzzi
Graphic design, data visualization, and independent research.
Graduated cum laude from the master's program in 2017. With The Legal Status of Ice, Irene 's graduation project visualized the battle for the Arctic and all that is at stake in a giant 3D model that explores overlapping boundary claims with a projection.
She now works as a graphic designer with a fascination for cartography. Irene specializes in art direction, branding & identity and information design, and works on self-initiated projects. She also teaches at the master's program of Design Academy Eindhoven.
Simone Post
Textile and product designer
Graduated cum laude from the bachelor's program in 2015. With her graduation project , Too Beautiful to Scrap, she gave a second life to the residual waste of textile maker Vlisco. She used self-developed folding and cutting techniques with which she made colorful rugs that are still for sale .
She now works with companies such as Adidas, Hermès and Kvadrat, and on self-initiated projects for galleries and museums. Simone designed the largest mural in the Netherlands for Vlisco headquarters in 2021, an artwork of some 2500m2.
Irakli Sabekia
Designer and artistic researcher
Graduated cum laude from the bachelor's program in 2019. His graduation project, Voicing Borders, dealt with the situation in his native Georgia after the Russian invasion. The barbed wire used to mark occupied territory Irakli used precisely as a means of expressing objection to the occupation. He designed a radio transmitter and connected it to a barbed-wire fence, transforming it into an antenna. The radio sent messages in Morse code with the names of the vanished villages and their geographical coordinates.
He now works at the intersection of design, art and philosophy. In an artistic and interactive way he approaches complex subjects and makes them discussable. In 2021, Irakli's work was on display at the Van Abbemuseum as part of GEO-Design: Budget Airlines exhibition .
Bouke Bruins
Hands-on social designer
Graduated cum laude from the bachelor's program in 2017. His graduation project Boyscout Designer is a bottom-up method, thinking and movement to make public space a better place. Vacant lots, graffiti-covered concrete, anonymous squares or sidewalks: each one is a canvas for his provocative guerrilla interventions.
He now works as Boyscout Designer with the Eindhoven collective De Reuringdienst and is based at the creative co-working place Kade Clubhuis . Work by Bouke is currently on display at the exhibition Glashard. Post-graffiti in De Glasfabriek Schiedam at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
Friso Wiersma
Designer and maker
Graduated cum laude from the bachelor's program in 2017. For his graduation project, By Hand, Friso designed a series of furniture that anyone can create. Thanks to pre-cut joins, stools, sofas and nightstands, could be easily put together without a nail or screw.
He now works as an in-house designer at IKEA in Sweden.

The rooms and halls of the Grand Peterhof Palace
#Attractions #Museums #Peterhof #Peter I #Sightseeing
The Grand Palace along with the large fountain cascade in front of it is the main attraction of Peterhof and architectural dominant of the whole Palace and Park complex. In XVII – XIX centuries the Grand Peterhof Palace was the main ceremonial residence of Russian tsars, which hosted important events and celebrations, receptions, balls and masquerades. This monumentally looking building has about 30 rooms inside.
The Grand Staircase
The Guest Entrance was arranged in the Western part of the building and involved the Grand staircase created by Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1751. The decoration of the Grand staircase included gilded statues and carved bouquets, caryatids and rocaille (that is made in the Rococo style) cartouches. The staircase leads guests to the enfilade which is a series of state rooms for official purposes.
• The Chesma hall is a waiting room located in front of the Throne room were officials were waiting for the start of the reception. Paintings by the German painter Jacob Hackert serve as the main decoration of the hall. They depict the most dramatic episodes of the Chesma battle in which Russian fleet headed by count Alexei Orlov defeated Turkish fleet.
• The Throne room is the most spacious one, designed for receptions, balls and concerts, with an overall area of 330 sq.m. Originally this hall shone in its splendor, but in 1777 it was decorated in a classic and more modest style under the project of Yury Felten
• The Audience room was intended for small receptions of the Empress Elizabeth. The design was done by Rastrelli and became one of the best works of the architect.
“According to a legend, Elizabeth ordered Rastrelli to use as much gold in the room design as possible, because the apartment was used for the reception of noble merchants representatives, who, in the opinion of the Empress, admired gold”
• In the eighteenth century The Dance hall was known as The Merchants hall and its spacious area of 270 sq.m. occupied most of the Western half of the Grand Peterhof Palace. The windows are arranged in two tiers here and numerous mirrors and paintings are used as decorations. Parquet is made of dark and light oak, maple and walnut. According to a legend, Elizabeth ordered Rastrelli to use as much gold in the room design as possible, because the apartment was used for the reception of noble merchants representatives, who, in the opinion of the Empress, admired gold.
• White dining room was meant for festive meals and was originally designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. In 1774 – 1775, Yuri Felten significantly changed the hall – the new style was the complete opposite of the previous one. Instead of the gloss of gold the interior was decorated in strict classical canons. In the center of the room there is a huge table, covered with a white tablecloth and a 30 persons porcelain set, created by the famous English master Josiah Wedgwood.
• The Painting hall is the oldest one: it was designed during the life of Peter I. It is decorated with tapestries by French masters and 16 paintings by Italian artists. Originally Nicolo Michetti and Jean-Baptiste Leblond took part in creation of the room design, but later, in the middle of the XVIII century, the hall was changed by the project of Rastrelli.
The Throne Room
Ceremonial halls are followed by the rooms of the private half, which was accessible only to a circle of confidants. It housed bedrooms, private offices and salons, designed again by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The abundance of gilding, mirrors and paintings, suspended symmetrical arches with plafond paintings and parquet floors made of precious wood – all these details create a festive atmosphere.
Currently, the Grand Peterhof Palace is a unique Museum of history and art, whose contains about three and a half thousand exhibits, including paintings and porcelain, fabrics, unique furniture and personal belongings of the Russian rulers.

Ploshchad Ostrovskogo (Ostrovsky Square)
Although the elaborate plan of Italian architect Carlo Rossi to create a large urban area between Anichkov Palace and the Imperial Public Library (now the Russian National Library) was never fully realized, Ploshchad Ostrovskogo nevertheless turned out to be one of the more interesting built environments in St. Petersburg. Ploshchad Ostrovskogo is the centre of a grand compositional ensemble connecting Nevsky Prospekt and the Fontanka River Embankment that includes the Catherine Gardens , the Alexandrinsky Theatre , Ulitsa Zodchego Rossi and Ploshchad Lomonosova .
In the middle of the 18th century the vast Anichkov Palace, with its garden, fountains, and ponds, covered all the territory from the Fontanka River to Sadovaya Ulitsa. In 1818, the estate was re-planned resulting in a space between the newly-constructed Public Library and the Anichkov Palace Garden that was ideally suited to a small square. Carlo Rossi was commissioned to design the project, and it took him ten years to formulate his master plan for the space.
According to Rossi's plans, the Alexandrinsky Theatre became the focal point of the square. Construction of the theater in high neoclassical style was completed in 1832. The ornate facade of the theater was decorated with six Corinthian columns, numerous theatrical masks and figures of the muses, and a sculpture of Apollo riding a chariot on top of the building. In front of the theater the Alexandrinsky Garden was laid out. In 1873, artist Mikhail Mikeshin unveiled his magnificent monument of Catherine the Great, surrounded by prominent public figures of her reign, including Alexander Suvorov, Gavrila Derzhavin, Dashkova, Peter Rumyantsev, Ivan Betsky, Alexei Orlov, and Grigory Potemkin.
The developments surrounding the square were constructed in the same high classical style. These comprised a new wing of the Public Library facing Ploshchad Ostrovskogo, and two identical three-story buildings with their main facades facing the square. The two buildings stand on opposite sides of what was originally called Teatralnaya Ulitsa (Theatre Street) and now honors its creator as Ulitsa Zodchego Rossi (Architect Rossi Street). One building originally housed the Ministry of the Interior, and the other before the Revolution was occupied by the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres. It now houses the Theatre Museum and the famous Vaganova Ballet School. Ulitsa Zodchego Rossi is famous for its perfect proportions based on the "golden ratio": its length is 220 meters, and width and height are both 22 meters. This is the only street in the city where only two buildings are located.
At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries several other buildings appeared on the square, including the Basin Apartment Building, a fine example of Russian Revival architecture to the east of the theatre, and the neoclassical offices of the Society of the Moscow-Vindavo-Rybinsk Railway on the opposite side of the square. The latest addition to the square's architecture, next to the railway offices, was completed in 2008 and is an interesting attempt by contemporary architects to create a building in historical style that blends in with its surroundings. Originally intended as a luxury hotel, it will now house the offices of a Gazprom subsidiary.
Originally, the square was named after the Alexandrinskiy Theater located here. In 1923, it was renamed Ploshchad Ostrovskogo (Ostrovsky Square) in honor of the great 19th-century Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky. Today, you can find portrait and caricature artists around in and around the Catherine, as well as photographers and costumed characters in the guise of Catherine the Great and other historical figures.
