A guide to the procedure for the public defence of a doctoral thesis

A doctoral thesis at a Swedish university must be defended in public in the presence of an expert in the field from another university. This is a guide to the procedure at Halmstad University.

It takes four years of full-time studies to obtain a doctoral degree. However, in practice, it takes longer, as doctoral students tend to participate in other work such as teaching. The research programme culminates in the submission of a doctoral thesis. A doctoral thesis at a Swedish university must be defended in public in the presence of an expert in the field from another university, known as the opponent. The opponent is officially appointed by the Faculty Board. The Faculty Board also appoints a chairman of the public defence and an examining board (usually three people). The examining board evaluates the thesis and the candidate’s defence of the thesis. Based on their evaluation, the Board assigns a grade of “Pass” or “Fail”. The thesis defence is a formal event for which the procedure is explained below.

The doctoral thesis

The doctoral thesis may be presented either as a monograph or as a compilation thesis.

The participants at the defence

  • The opponent: A distinguished researcher, who is a specialist in the relevant field, is selected to oppose the doctoral thesis at the public defence.
  • The candidate: The candidate is the author of the doctoral thesis. During the defence the candidate (in Swedish “respondent”) may be addressed either by his or her first name, or more formally as Mr. X, Ms. X.
  • The chairman of the public defence: The chairman of the public defence is often a professor or associate professor from the candidate's department
  • The examination board: The examination board is appointed by the Faculty Board, and consists of three to five members, normally three. At least one board member must be from another university. The grade for the thesis is to be decided by the board.
  • The audience: The audience will include the candidate's friends, relatives, and colleagues, and can be addressed simply as “Ladies and Gentlemen”.

The outline of a public defence of a doctoral thesis

  • The chairman of the defence welcomes everyone, and presents the candidate, the opponent and the members of the examination board. The chairman continues to present relevant information about where the research has been performed and the other persons involved. Furthermore, the chairman will present the outline for the defence.
  • The chairman leaves the floor to the candidate with a request to present any errata.
  • The candidate* presents a summary of the thesis including the scientific contributions (that is described) for about 20 minutes. Alternatively, the opponent presents the thesis and compares it relatively to other research in the field. The candidate must then be given the opportunity to comment on the opponents perception of the thesis.
  • The opponent will discuss the thesis with the candidate through asking questions which enables the candidate to show his or her expected knowledge and ability to discuss the results. During this part of the defence other listeners may not participate in the discussion.
  • The chairman gives the members of the examining board the opportunity to ask questions to the candidate.
  • The chairman gives all listeners the opportunity to ask questions to the candidate and comment on the thesis.
  • When the discussion is finished, the chairman formally closes the public session and the members of the examination board withdraw for their meeting.
  • The examination board meeting is held behind closed doors. The board decides within itself who is to be the chairman of the meeting. The opponent, the principal supervisor and the second supervisor have the right to attend the meeting with the examination board. They may participate in the deliberations, but not in the decision. Although the opponent does not have a vote, his or her opinion is considered an important contribution to the board’s discussion. The opponent will often be asked how the standard of the thesis and its defence compare with those in his or her home country. The board announces its decision as soon as possible.

It is very rare for a Swedish thesis to be rejected after the formal defence. The content of the thesis has already been reviewed internally and also externally. However, if as opponent you find that the thesis is not of the standard required for a PhD degree, please contact the supervisor or examiner well in advance so that the public defence can be called off.

The entire act usually takes approximately 2–3 hours.

The public defence may be held in Swedish or English. The language is determined primarily with regard to the candidate, opponent and the members of the examination board, and secondly with regard to the expected audience.

*For the area of Health and Lifestyle, the normal case is that the opponent presents a summary of the thesis as well as its scientific contributions.

Public defence of doctoral thesis

Details of the Dissertation and licentiate seminar, thesis preparation and application for degree certificate are listed on this page.

Public defence of doctoral thesis (Dissertation)

To receive a doctorate, the doctoral student must receive a pass grade on a doctoral thesis. Writing the thesis must be equivalent to studies worth at least 120 credits (equivalent to two years of full-time study). More specific requirements for the thesis' scope in credits are described in the general syllabus for each subject.

Thesis production

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, a doctoral thesis shall be orally defended at a public defence. A proposal for the public defence is prepared at the school. The process for this at each of the faculties is outlined below.

The proposal states e.g. date of the public defence, title of thesis, opponent, examination committee members and chair. The proposal is administrated by analysts at the Faculty Office and a decision on the proposal is made by the chair of each faculty board (the dean).

If you have any questions concerning the proposal for public defence etc. contact the Faculty Office, [email protected] .

The Faculty of Business, Science and Engineering (ENT)

The doctoral student and/or main supervisor informs the school's study and research administration that they wish to submit a proposal for the public defence, whereupon the administration sends a link to an online form, which the doctoral student and main supervisor must fill in. The head of school then makes a digital decision regarding the submission of the proposal for the public defence. Thereafter, the Faculty Office's analyst must be notified by the study and research administration, no later than two months before the planned date of the public defence , that a digital proposal is ready for further processing. If a public defence is planned to be held in September, the proposal must be submitted to the Faculty Office no later than the first week of June .

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HS)

The proposal for the public defence of a thesis is prepared at the school (a link to the form can be found below) and must be signed by the head of school before it is submitted to the Faculty Office, no later than two months before the proposed date for the public defence . If a public defence is planned to be held in September, the proposal must be submitted to the Faculty Office no later than the first week of June .

Proposal for public defence of doctoral thesis     (Please make sure to print the form single-sided)

Faculty of Medicine and Health (MH)

The doctoral student and/or main supervisor informs the school's Study and Research Administration that they wish to submit a proposal for the public defence, whereupon the administration sends a link to an online form, which the doctoral student and main supervisor must fill in. Please note that the school's Study and Research Administration ask that this is done no later than 15 weeks prior to the suggested date for the defence of the thesis . The head of school then makes a digital decision regarding the submission of the proposal for the public defence. Thereafter, the Faculty Office's analyst must be notified by the study and research administration that a digital proposal is ready for further processing. If a public defence is planned to be held in September, the proposal must be submitted to the Faculty Office no later than the first week of June.

All dissertations within the Faculty of Medicine and Health (MH) must undergo an ethics review prior to a decision being made in regard to the proposal for the public defense of a doctoral thesis. The documentation must be submitted in accordance with the template developed within  Rutin för etikgranskningsfunktion inom Fakulteten för medicin och hälsa (Appendix 1) (in Swedish). This process should begin at the latest 15 weeks prior to the date for the public defence of the thesis .

Licentiate seminar

For a licentiate degree, the doctoral student must achieve a pass grade on a thesis that is equivalent to studies worth 60 credits. More specific requirements for the thesis' scope in credits are described in the general syllabus for each subject.

The thesis should be defended at a seminar. The head of school decides on whether a seminar should be held and, where applicable, the time and place and a reviewer/faculty examiner at the seminar.

Degree certificate

A doctoral student who fulfils the requirements for a Doctoral degree or Licentiate degree shall, on request, receive certification of this from the university. You can apply for the degree certificate through Studenttjänster.

Stockholm University’s departments have different rules regarding the use of the Word template. Check with your department to find out which elements apply.

Templates for PhD students and researchers

In keeping with the vice-chancellor’s directive, a dissertation is to be published open access, and the entire text (same version as the printed thesis) should be uploaded in DiVA.

If you have written a compilation thesis, only the "kappa" (or comprehensive summary) should be published.

After you've ordered the final print the Dissertation support will upload the final version of your file.

5. About the nailing page

The nailing page must be printed and bound in the printed version of the thesis. You’ll receive the nailing page as a PDF file from the library after your registration details have been checked. You won't have access to the post in DiVA after you've submitted the registration. If you want to change anything at the nailing page you can send an email to Dissertation support and we'll help you.

6. Completing the submission of dissertation

According to the library, once you have registered your dissertation in DiVA and received your nailing page, the official nailing is complete, and nothing else is needed before the defence of your dissertation.

Two workdays before your nailing day, your dissertation becomes searchable and the information in it is passed on to LIBRIS. Contact your department to find out if there is anything further you need to do in relation to nailing days.

ISBN for doctoral thesis

In order to distinguish between different publications, an ISBN number is issued. It is a thirteen-digit number and is unique for every publication. The printed thesis needs one ISBN and the PDF published in DiVA needs one ISBN. Student or licentiate theses do not need an ISBN.

The dissertation support at the university library adds the ISBNs when we check your thesis registration in DiVA and your thesis file in the production tool.

Compilation theses and monographs

If you are printing a compilation thesis, the nailing page, the thesis, and the papers should be uploaded in the university's production tool. The files will automatically be in the correct format. If you have problems saving your files to PDF, we at Dissertation support can help you.

For a monograph, you upload the nailing page and the dissertation file in the university's production tool. The files will automatically be in the correct format. If you have problems saving your file to PDF, we at Dissertation support can help you.

When we at the Dissertation Support have approved of your file, you can order the test print through the production tool. Universitetsservice US-AB prints a test print in 24 hours. In the timeline above there is time for in total three test prints. If you want to do more than that, you have to send your files to the printer earlier.

Each time you change anything in the production tool you must request our approval again and order a new test print. Universitetsservice US-AB will print the final print from approved test print files.

The first test print is free of charge, thereafter it will cost 250 SEK per test print. Every time you change something in the files, a new test print will be ordered. When the test print turns out as you want it the final print will be printed from the same files.

A black and white page costs 0.22 SEK and a page in colour costs 0.90 SEK. Cover and binding costs 16 SEK per copy. In addition, there is a prepress fee of 250 SEK. The delivery to your department costs 125 SEK. If you want the copies to be delivered to another address the costs might increase.

You may decide together with your supervisor and department how many copies of your dissertation you want to print. The copies are delivered to your department (unless you have made an agreement with the printer about another delivery address).

In addition to your copies, you will be charged for three copies for the university library, one copy to the President of the university, and one copy to your faculty (if you are working within the The Faculty of Humanities, it receives two copies). US-AB will send these copies directly to the Library, to the President, and to the faculty. You will be charged for the delivery costs of in total 250 SEK.

The printing company is obliged to deliver a copy to the National Library of Sweden and to six other university libraries in Sweden. You don't have to send any copies yourself since the printing house manages this separately. But seven copies of the numbers printed will be used for this.

All published works by Stockholm University have to be printed by a procured printer within the university’s framework contract. Since 2023, Universitetsservice US-AB is the first choice procured for printing the doctoral theses. This film shows how dissertations are printed at Universitetsservice US-AB. The whole printing process, from the first test print to the delivery of the dissertation, takes 15 work days.

You can find more information about procured printing companies here (text in Swedish. Search for "doktorsavhandlingar").

Each department is responsible for the layout and printing of licentiate theses.

In order to make your research available to as many people as possible we will publish your dissertation in DiVA as a full text. (If it is a compilation thesis, only the first part, "the kappa", will be published. If it is a monograph, the whole dissertation will be published.)

One more way to spread the thesis is to publish it as print-on-demand with Publit. This service is free of charge for you as a PhD student and means that the dissertation will be available in Swedish bookstores. A copy is printed when someone has bought it. You will also get a link to your own webshop and furthermore the dissertation will be published in the university library webshop.

Due to the copyright it is mainly monograph dissertation that is published print-on-demand. But if you have the copyright to all the articles in your compilation thesis it can be published print-on-demand as well.

University Library Webshop

If you are publishing your dissertation at another publishing house, you do not have to follow the Stockholm University cover template. However, you must register your thesis in DiVA and get a title sheet that will be distributed with your dissertation. It must also be stated on the cover or on the colophon that the title is a dissertation from Stockholm University.

Before your nailing day (at least two work days before) the library, the President of the university, and the faculty need copies of your dissertation. The President and your faculty need one copy each. The library needs four copies.

Research that Guides Practice: Outcome Research in Swedish PhD Theses Across Seven Disciplines 1997-2012

The core of evidence-based practice (EBP) as advocated for within the practice arms of the health and social sciences is to promote the routine incorporation of the best available research evidence into practice efforts. This requires discipline-specific education that is not only grounded in professional practice but also prepares would-be scientists in the application of the sophisticated techniques that characterize today's high research standards. Doctoral-level education is an important primer for future scientific endeavors across disciplines. This study examined 2334 theses published across Sweden in public health, criminology, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, social work, and sociology during the period 1997-2012. Of the theses reviewed, 13% aimed to investigate the effects of interventions. The highest percentage of effectiveness studies was found in nursing, public health, and psychology. The percentage of outcome research increased during the period. Controlled studies (with comparison group and pre- and post-test) occurred primarily within public health, nursing, psychiatry, and psychology. Of the 296 theses that included an intervention effectiveness study, 131 (44%), or 5.6% of all theses reviewed, met all four assessment criteria for quality. PhD education across seven disciplines in Sweden may be producing a professional core of scientists that is ill prepared to produce the type of research that is necessary to inform practice of the effects of its interventions as exposure to the rigors of quality effectiveness research is all but non-existent. This has implications for the advancement of an evidence-based practice and intervention science more broadly.

Keywords: Doctoral thesis; Impact evaluation; Outcome research; Quasi-experiment; RCT.

Doctoral dissertations in human geography from Swedish universities 1884-2015: demographics, formats and productivity

Profile image of Lund Hansen Anders

2018, Journal of Geography in Higher Education

ABSTRACT The doctoral dissertation is a key component of postgraduate education that plays an important role for knowledge production and hence the development of a discipline. Swedish human geography currently lacks an overview of dissertations. This article fills this knowledge gap by reporting findings from a unique database covering all doctoral dissertations between 1884 and 2015. The paper focuses on the demographics of the authors (age, gender), the format of the dissertation and explores productivity variations for authors of compilation dissertations. The findings show a notable increase in the number of doctoral dissertations since the late 1960s but a decreasing share of doctoral dissertations in the social sciences since the 1970s. In terms of demographics, we show that while the age of the authors remains relatively stable, the gender-balance has improved considerably. In terms of format, the monograph has rapidly given way to compilation dissertations, which now account for half the number of dissertations. More than 70% of all dissertations are now published in English. Statistical results suggest that the likelihood of completing a compilation dissertation is greater if the doctoral candidate is young and if attending Umeå University. But individual author productivity for compilation dissertations is mainly influenced by unobservables.

This study examines doctoral dissertations based on sex of supervisors year periods and universities in which have a sociology PhD program in Turkey and also it determines whether there are any significant differences according to those variables. Currently, Turkey has 169 universities that 63 of those have been admitting students for undergraduate program of sociology departments. In addition, 25 universities have doctoral program at sociology. However, doctoral dissertations have been conducted only in 14 universities among them. Totally 513 doctoral dissertations were found which were conducted between 1950 and 2012. In this study only 493 doctoral dissertations, out of 513, were analyzed. The qualitative and quantitative context analyze has been applied from the socio-historical critique point of view by using MAXQDA. Consequently, this study indicates that there is gender-related differentiation of doctoral dissertations’ supervisors based on years and universities that doctoral dissertations were conducted in departments of sociology.

Although there have been noticeable improvements in recent years, geography continues to be a predominantly male discipline. The percentage of women receiving PhDs in geography has tracked lower than the U.S. average of female PhDs. Previous studies of women’s contribution to geography have focused on personal accounts or on the study of some of the most prominent practitioners, with a few studies using basic data on PhDs awarded and Association of American Geographers membership to determine trends. This article provides a comprehensive overview of doctoral degrees in geography by gender, over time, and across all universities in the United States by examining an alternative database, that of doctoral dissertations. The analysis yields three separate types of results. First, historical and contemporary variations among U.S. universities are examined. Second, data indicate that male and female doctoral students differ in the sex of their advisor. Third, a simple regression model explains some of the discrepancies in the proportion of female doctoral students by department. In sum, this article provides a comprehensive empirical study of the factors that might contribute to the continued disparities in female doctoral students in geography.

The proportion of women tends to decrease the higher the academic rank, following a global pattern. Sweden has taken comprehensive measures to decrease this gap across 30 years, and many countries are following a similar path. Yet today only 27% of faculty with the rank of professor in Sweden are female. A common explanation is that academia is biased against women. According to this hypothesis, women have to reach higher levels of scholarly achievement than men to be appointed to the same academic rank. Publication metrics when attaining the rank of professor were compiled from the Web of Science for samples of the whole population of 1345 professors appointed at the six largest universities in Sweden during a six-year period. Men had significantly more publications and citations in both medicine and in the social sciences, rejecting the hypothesis that women are held to a higher scholarly standard in this context.

The public defence is the occasion when your doctoral thesis is discussed and defenced in public. People with different roles and functions participate - these are briefly described below. In connection with the registration of the public defence, it is proposed who is to be appointed to the various roles, such as faculty opponent, examining committee member and more. This is decided by a Research Programmes leader from the Research Education Board at LTH (read more under Registration and review).

In order to be appointed as a faculty opponent or member of the examining committee, special requirements must be met.

Explanations - Public defence

Chair of the examining committee - Ordförande i betygsnämnd

Chair of the public defence - Ordförande vid disputation

Committee deputy member - Suppleant i betygsnämnd

Co-supervisor - Biträdande handledare

Faculty opponent - Fakultetsopponent

Examining committee - Betygsnämnd

Main supervisor - Huvudhandledare

Public defence - Disputation

The doctoral student defending the thesis - Respondent

Thesis - Avhandling

The faculty opponent possesses expert knowledge in the subject area of the thesis. The opponent's role is to critically examine the thesis and to discuss the content in detail with the respondent during the public defence. The opponent must highlight both strengths and weaknesses in the thesis and give the respondent the opportunity to show their knowledge in the field of the thesis throughout the public defence. As the opponent is not a member of the examining committee, he or she has no voting rights at the examining committee's meeting.

The examining committee consists of three members, but in exceptional cases it may consist of five members. The members often represent different scientific aspects within the subject area of the thesis and they have the opportunity to ask their own questions to the respondent when the discussion between the faculty opponent and the respondent is concluded. The members are appointed to assess the quality of the thesis and the respondent's ability to discuss its content. It is the examining committee that decides whether the thesis and the public defence are to be approved.

When the examining committee meets after the public defence, each member has one vote (approved / rejected), where the majority's votes determine the outcome. At the meeting, the members appoint one of the members as chairman.

At least one deputy must also be appointed to the examining committee. The deputy must be able to replace a regular member who is unable to participate. If all ordinary members participate in the public defence, the deputy does not participate in the examining committee's vote.

There is a chairman whose task is to lead the public defence. This includes, among other things, opening and concluding the public defence, presenting the participants and ensuring that the members of the audience also has the opportunity to ask questions and present views. The chairman is normally a person from the doctoral student's department.

The public defence may vary slightly between different departments and therefore the description here is general.

The publice defence act is opened by the chairman of the public defence, who presents the participants and explains the structure. The faculty opponent and / or the respondent then usually presents a general description of the thesis where the most important conclusions are described. This presentation focuses on relating the public defence to the general research area in order to place it in a context. Normally, the presentation is held at a relatively general scientific level so that others within the faculty can follow along. Then follows the most important part of the public defence: the scientific discussion between the faculty opponent and the respondent.

During the discussion, the faculty opponent asks questions and discusses important parts of the doctoral thesis, while the respondent answers and defends their work. The faculty opponent can choose which questions to ask and in which parts of the thesis the focus is placed. But the questions should normally focus on highlighting the most important contributions in the respondent's work, the relevance of this and any inaccuracies and misconceptions. The questions can vary from more general to more detailed. The idea is that the respondent will have the opportunity to show knowledge and understanding within their subject area. When the discussion is over, the faculty opponent usually summarizes the main impressions of the public defence.

When the discussion between the faculty opponent and the respondent has been completed, the members of the examining committee have the opportunity to ask questions and give comments. After this, the audience also has the opportunity to ask questions before the chairman of the public defence ends the session. There is no formal time limit for how long a public defence act lasts, but normally it lasts for about two to three hours.

When the public defence is over, the members of the examining committee meet to discuss and finally cast their votes. The faculty opponent and often the supervisor and chairman of the public defence are also present at the meeting. The members of the examining committee can request input regarding the respondent's work from the opponent and supervisor, but only the members of the examining committee may vote if the respondent is approved or not. After the vote, the outcome is announced by the chairman of the examining committee.

Example of a public defence act

  • The chairman of the public defence presents the participants and their roles.
  • Introduction of the faculty opponent, places the doctoral thesis in its context.
  • Introduction by the respondent of the most important results. - - - - - a short break - - - - - - -
  • The main discussion and the defence (faculty opponent and respondent).
  • Some further questions and comments from the examining committee
  • Additional questions and comments from the audience may occur.
  • The chairman of the public defence concludes the session.
  • The examining committee meets behind closed doors. The opponent, the supervisor and the chairman of the public defence often attend the meeting.
  • The result of the vote in the examining committee's meeting is announced orally.

Elections Today

Recent projections, delegate tracker, maryland, west virginia and nebraska primaries 2024: alsobrooks beats trone, gop incumbents survive, teen walks at graduation after completing doctoral degree at 17.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II was 10 when she entered college as a freshman.

A teenager from Chicago walked in her graduation ceremony this month after earning her doctoral degree at 17.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II told " Good Morning America " that she was homeschooled in her early years before entering college at age 10.

In 2020, she said she earned a Master of Science degree, and then, one year later, at age 15, was accepted into the Doctorate of Behavioral Health Management program at Arizona State University.

In December 2023, at 17, Tillman successfully defended her dissertation to earn her doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from ASU's College of Health Solutions.

On May 6, she walked at ASU's spring commencement ceremony.

Tillman told "GMA" she has always held education in such high regard in part due to her family's background.

"People in my life like my grandmother, who was part of the Civil Rights movement, she of course harped on the importance of education and consistently learning something always," Tillman said. "But the way I always held education so high on my own, aside from being raised that way, was finding different things to be educated about."

She continued, "I feel like that urge to learn something new just never didn't exist for me."

Teen who battled leukemia and homelessness as a child graduates college at 18

Dr. Lesley Manson, a clinical associate professor at ASU, told "GMA" that Tillman is the youngest person in school history to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health.

Manson said she oversaw Tillman's dissertation for the doctoral program offered through ASU Online.

During her studies, Tillman wrote a journal article of her dissertation and completed an internship at a university student health center, according to Manson.

"She really led change and worked on different forms of management to really reduce healthcare stigma and improve that student population there to be able to enter and accept student health services," she said of Tillman. "It was wonderful to see her and help her navigate some of those personal and professional interactions and grow through those experiences."

Manson described Tillman as an "inquisitive" and "innovative" student, and emphasized just how rare it is to accomplish what she has so far.

"It's a wonderful celebration ... but this is still something so rare and unique," she said. "She has innovative ideas and motivation, which is wonderful, and truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader."

PHOTO: Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II and her professor Dr. Lesley Manson, a clinical associate professor at Arizona State University.

Manson said she hopes Tillman continues to inspire people with her love of learning, saying, "That curiosity is always there, and I think all learners come with that, but it's great to be able to see it in someone so young as well."

Her inspiration and how she gives back to community

Tillman said her own journey wouldn't be possible without the support of her mom, who she said is one of her biggest motivators.

"Seeing my mother consistently work so hard to continuously uphold our family's legacy, and be that person that everyone was able to go to, if they needed anything ... always seeing [her] like [a] 'wonder woman' definitely made me want to grow up [into] an accomplished person," she said.

PHOTO: Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II officially walked at her graduation ceremony in May.

An advocate for education, Tillman is also the founder and CEO of a leadership institute that emphasizes the arts and STEM.

"I feel like adding art and putting a focus on it throughout science, technology, engineering and math makes the kids excited to learn all those things," she said. "And it opens them up to all of the possibilities and all the knowledge provided in that area of just STEM."

'Super dad' graduates with master's while working 3 jobs

As for her plans after graduation, Tillman said she is "just like any other teenager, still figuring out what my specific dreams and goals are."

PHOTO: Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II was only 10 when she became a freshman at the college of Lake County, majoring in Psychology.

"I'm really just grateful that the world is my oyster, and that I've done so much so young," she said. "And I have time to kind of think that through."

Tillman added that she hopes young people will take away from her story that it's OK to continually figure out what you want to do in life.

"Always remember that everyone has points in their life where they feel like they're figuring it out," she said. "And so figuring things out, not knowing what you want isn't a bad thing. But making the choice not to sit down and try to figure it out is."

Mom delivers baby in car hours before defending her Rutgers doctoral thesis

Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez

  • Tina Kelley | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Giving birth and defending a doctoral dissertation could easily be considered among the most stressful items on a bucket list. For Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez, it was all in a day’s work. One day’s work.

She even grabbed a shower in between.

On March 24, Brevard-Rodriguez, director of Aresty Research Center at Rutgers University, was finishing up preparations for her doctoral defense the next day. Eight months pregnant with her second child, she didn’t feel terrific, but she persisted.

She was trying to hone down to 20 minutes her remarks on “The Beauty Performances of Black College Women: A Narrative Inquiry Study Exploring the Realities of Race, Respectability, and Beauty Standards on a Historically White Campus.” The Zoom link had gone out to family, friends, and colleagues for the defense, scheduled for 1 p.m. the next day.

“Operation Dissertation before Baby,” as she called it, was a go.

But at 2:15 a.m. on March 25 her water broke, a month and a day early.

As the contractions came closer and closer, her wife drove her down the Garden State Parkway, trying to get to Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair before Baby Enzo showed up.

But the baby was faster than a speeding Maserati and arrived in the front seat at 5:55 a.m., after just three pushes. He weighed in at 5-pounds 12-ounces, 19 inches long, and in perfect health for a baby four weeks early.

“I did have to detail her car afterward,” the new mom said of her wife.

Brevard-Rodriguez was feeling so good after the birth that she decided against asking to reschedule her thesis defense.

“I had more than enough time to regroup, shower, eat and proceed with the dissertation,” she said. She had a quick nap, too. The doctors and nurses supported her decision and made sure she had access to reliable wifi at the hospital.

She gave her defense with a Rutgers background screen. When she learned she had passed, she dropped the fake background, and people could see Brevard-Rodriguez in her maternity bed, and Enzo in her wife’s arms.

“I said, ‘You guys missed the big news,’ and they just fell out,” said Brevard-Rodriguez, who waited for the reveal because she didn’t want extra sympathy from her dissertation committee.

Melina Mangin, chair of the Educational Theory, Policy & Administration Department at the Graduate School of Education, was astounded.

“Tamiah had delivered a flawless defense with zero indication that she had just given birth,” she said. “She really took the idea of productivity to the next level!”

Finishing her doctorate in education and having her last child were fitting 40th birthday presents to herself, Brevard-Rodriguez said. She turned 40 in November and returns to work in late August.
