Benefits of Using Coloring Pages with Preschoolers and Kindergarten Children

Coloring pages have long been a staple in the world of early childhood education.

Beyond being a simple and enjoyable activity, coloring pages offer a myriad of benefits for preschoolers and kindergarten children.

From enhancing fine motor skills to fostering creativity and cognitive development, the advantages of incorporating coloring pages into early education are both numerous and valuable.

  • Fine Motor Skills Development:

Coloring requires children to use their small muscles to grip and manipulate crayons or colored pencils.

This fine motor skill development is crucial for activities such as writing, tying shoelaces, and buttoning clothes.

As children explore the boundaries of the coloring pages with their tools, they refine their hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

  • Preparation for Writing:

Coloring pages provide an excellent foundation for the development of writing skills.

The controlled movements required for coloring are the same ones needed for holding a pencil and forming letters.

Engaging in coloring activities helps children practice the basic strokes that are fundamental for handwriting.

  • Cognitive Development:

Coloring pages offer a platform for cognitive development as children learn to identify colors, patterns, and shapes.

They develop an understanding of spatial awareness as they decide where to place different colors on the page.

Additionally, coloring pages often include themes that encourage discussion, expanding children’s vocabulary and comprehension.

  • Creativity and Imagination:

Coloring pages serve as a canvas for unleashing creativity and imagination.

Preschoolers and kindergarten children can experiment with colors, mix them, and create their own interpretations of the world around them.

This process encourages self-expression and allows children to develop a sense of pride and ownership over their creations.

  • Focus and Concentration:

Engaging in coloring activities requires children to focus and concentrate on the task at hand.

As they work to stay within the lines and choose colors thoughtfully, they develop the ability to sustain attention—a skill that is crucial for academic success later on.

  • Emotional Development:

Coloring provides a relaxing and therapeutic outlet for children to express their emotions. It can serve as a calming activity, helping them manage stress or anxiety.

Coloring pages also offer an opportunity for self-reflection, enabling children to communicate their feelings through their choice of colors and the way they approach the coloring process.

  • Social Skills and Collaboration:

When coloring is done in a group setting, it becomes a social activity that fosters collaboration and communication. Children can share ideas, exchange colors, and work together on a larger coloring project.

This collaborative experience helps develop important social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and respecting others’ ideas.

In the colorful world of early childhood education, coloring pages play a vital role in the holistic development of preschoolers and kindergarten children.

From honing fine motor skills to nurturing creativity and emotional well-being, the benefits are far-reaching.

Integrating coloring pages into educational curricula not only makes learning enjoyable but also sets the stage for a lifetime of cognitive, emotional, and social growth.

So, let the crayons dance and the colors flow, as we celebrate the boundless advantages of coloring in the early years.

Preschool Coloring Pages

Preschool coloring pages are a great way to help children learn and recognize colors. They provide an engaging hands-on experience that helps them become familiar with different colors, color words, and objects of each color. So get out your crayons and let’s start coloring!

With these free preschool printables, tips on how to use them effectively with your preschoolers, and examples of successful ways to use them, you can make learning about colors a fun and engaging activity for your children.

Preparing the Worksheets

To get started, gather the materials you’ll need to prepare the activity. I suggest the following:

  • printer paper

Now that you have all of your supplies, let’s get started with the prep work.

  • First, scroll to the very bottom of this post and enter your email address to request the file.
  • Save the file to your computer.
  • Open and print the worksheets making as many as you need for your students.
  • Laminate the pages or slip them in dry-erase pockets.

That’s it! Now, you’re all set to use this activity with your preschoolers.

Using the Coloring Pages

Help your preschoolers learn their colors with our fun coloring pages. Each page features a color splat in the top left corner for your children to identify. Have them find the crayon that matches the splat.

Next, have them name the letters in the color word and then color it the correct color.

Once they’ve identified the featured color and spelled the color word, have your preschoolers identify each of the items on the page. Then, color each object the correct color.

You can then laminate the pages and hang them in your learning space if you’d like.

What is the best way to introduce colors to preschoolers?

The best way to introduce colors to preschoolers is through daily activities and routines.

Point out colors during playtime, mealtime, and outdoor activities. For example, you can say “Can you hand me the red ball?” or “Let’s count all the green trees we see on our walk.”

Use colorful toys, books, and art supplies to make learning about colors more exciting.

It’s also important to keep it simple and focus on one color at a time to avoid overwhelming your preschooler.

What are some activities or games that can help reinforce color recognition skills in preschoolers?

There are several activities and games that can help reinforce color recognition skills in preschoolers:

  • Color Sorting : Provide a variety of objects that come in different colors (such as blocks, balls, or toys) and ask your preschooler to sort them by color.

Coloring Pages for Kids

Coloring is more than just a fun activity; it’s a pre-academic skill that sets the stage for your child’s educational journey. As a teacher, I’ve witnessed the magic of coloring in the early stages of a child’s development.

apple and banana coloring page

Benefits of Coloring for Children:

1. Promotes Creativity and Imagination

Have you ever seen purple skies and pink grass? Maybe not in reality, but you’ve likely encountered these vibrant hues in your child’s latest coloring adventure.

That’s the beauty of it—children are free from rules. They choose colors based on their imagination, fostering creativity.

As a preschool teacher, my advice is to let your child color however they like. Avoid instructing or criticizing; instead, let their creativity flow.

2. Calming and Relaxing:

The rhythmic motion of fingers gliding across the paper during coloring is inherently calming.

This simple, mechanical task provides a quiet moment, especially useful as a downtime activity.

Witness the calming effect on your child’s breathing and demeanor during those focused coloring sessions. It’s a great way for preschoolers to cool down after a stimulating activity or to ease excitement before an event.

3. Develops Fine Motor Skills:

Coloring is a fantastic exercise for your child’s fingers, hands, and wrist muscles.

This pre-academic skill allows them to practice and develop a proper grip.

With regular coloring sessions, they’ll be well-prepared for proper hand positioning when they start school.

Teacher’s Advice: Encourage your child to color freely without instructions or criticism. Suggest coloring as a calming activity for your child.

For this post’s free printables, I’ve prepared two sets of coloring pages that you can easily download and add to your child’s collection.

Easy Coloring Pages for Kids

Perfect for toddlers, this set features larger images with minimal details, catering to their developing motor skills. They can simply swipe a crayon across the pictures and voila—a masterpiece!

An added bonus: incomplete sentences at the bottom of each page, encouraging your child to personalize their artwork by writing their name.

Download the sets that best match your child’s coloring abilities—or why not grab them all?

It is quite refreshing to find some that puts a lot of love and passion in her work. The variety of Coloring pages from fruits, animals, and many more. I am grateful this website as it touches many needs. Keep it up Teacher Nessy. Coloring does rule!!

Hello, Claudy! Thank you for leaving us a message. I hope you have a great day. Happy coloring! 🥰

Thank for interesting post about coloring

Happy to serve! 🙂

Excellent article, Inspirational and very useful and clarifier.

Thank you. Happy to serve!

Hello, I liked the comments. Totally agree. Unfortunately there are strange things going on. Where I work we were told not to give any colouring pages to kids as we can kill their spontaneity and creativity. We’re only allowed to give them blank sheets for them to draw. No words for such foolishness. Some people shouldn’t run childcare centres…

Hmmm… I agree with giving children blank sheets as they can come up with really original ideas and work of art. Buuutt… Giving them coloring pages won’t necessarily kill their spontaneity and creativity. Balance is the key to everything. 🙂 I have students who really enjoy working on coloring pages because it’s their way of relaxing. Doing something mechanical and not actively thinking is refreshing, right? I think we should give our students that choice. Thank you for reaching out. I enjoyed reading your comment. Happy learning!

It’s always a good idea to spend some time practicing naming colors. I know, it sounds obvious but sometimes we miss what’s right in front of us! Name them as you use them so that when someone asks for one of those shades in an art project or game, they can easily find the right color for your work when coloring online on Varityskuvat!

I totally agree. 🙂 Thank you for leaving a message. Have a wonderful day.

hank u soooooo much for your website. I have a hard time with the computer and your printables really helped me soooooo much. I cant thank u enough. I now have hope in getting organized. U r awesome.

Thank you so much! I’m always happy to serve! 😁

This is awesome! I’ve just pinned for later as my daughter has just started drawing more (shes only 2 so you can imagine) …. all over my walls, toys, chairs etc you know what I mean lol Your sheets are perfect for her!

🤣 We cab totally relate! My nephew would write and draw and color everywhere if given the chance. That is why we always have coloring pages available around the house. 😁 Thank you for saving this!

One thing about toddlers is that they always try to get busy as time goes by. Thus, coloring would be a perfect activity that won’t tire them eventually. it is also good for building creativity as you say.

I agree. Coloring is a great activity to keep them busy and productive. 😁

My toddler is just 18 months but I give him colors and he draw, I can’t understand what he draws hahaha but when he will be over 2 years I’ll give him coloring books to develop his skills

Toddler years is the perfect time to introduce crayons. It can help develop their fine motor skills and at the same time it’s a new experience that they get to learn from. 😊

Coloring is very good for kids. It promotes their learning skills. I used to paint in my childhood.

I also love painting! I don’t have much time for it now, though. ☹️

What a cool post! Coloring is super relaxing. My kids did love coloring. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I agree! I also color to relax. It’s so simple yet it can really help when you’re feeling stressed. 😊

I love coloring, even now that am adult. Back then, coloring is part of our discipline exercise – coloring and not crossing each lines is a challenge, but I made it!

Congratulations! 😁 Coloring can be challenging for children especially becauae they are still developing their fine motor skills. But once you conquer it, you can be assured that you can do more things. 😁

I remember my kid colors a lot at a very young age and still do now. Agree that coloring teach the kids develop fine motor skills and creativity.

Fine motor skill development is definitely one of the benefits of coloring. Glad to hear that your child liked coloring, too! 😊

my elder girl like coloring. i let her be. give her colors and paper and let her draw what she want and let it color. i made a routine that everyday after school homework their will be coliring activity. coloring activity helps kids recognize colors fast and easily.

All kids love to color!! it is very nice coloring pages, kids always wants to doing coloring in drawing pages

That is so true! Kids just love coloring. 😁 They just can’t get enough of it.

Yes, Coloring activity is one of the best thing in my school time. I used to color books even I purchased a lot of coloring books from market. This helps in Hand And Eye Coordination. The other thing is focus. Focus is one important lesson that your children can learn from coloring. There are lots of benefits of coloring. Sharing your blog. Thanks for writing this article

I agree. Coloring does help in developing focus. Having a long attention span can help children do better in all activities- both academic and non-academic. 😊 Thanks for dropping by and for sharing my post.

I remember as I kid, I always loved to color. Even when I was growing, I still love it. But I had no idea that it could bring so much benefits!

Same here! Even as an adult I still enjoy coloring. 😁

This is so helpful. My daughter is 2.5 years old and slowly I would like to start these activities with her. She loves playing with colours and this is something we can do together.

I hope she enjoys the printables that I made. 😊

My littles love coloring and always have. To be honest, I think we all love coloring to some degree even as adults. Your coloring pages are adorable!

I think so, too! At my age I still buy coloring books for myself. AlthoughI still like the ones for kids. The coloring books for adults are way too complicated for me. Too much details. 😱 Thanks for dropping by!

So many people do not realize how many benefits color has for a little ones! Thank you for sharing these cute coloring pages.

Thank you! 😊 Coloring is really an awesome activity. It’s so simple yet it packs a lot of benefits for children. Hopefully more parents will be encouraged to make this activity part of their children’s daily routine. 😁

So cool! My kids always liked to color when they were tiny. These look great.

Thank you. I always try to come up with great materials for my students, and now for my nephew, too. 😁

My son loves colouring and as much as it can get messy at times, it’s so nice to see how much he learns and get’s excited finding out new things and objects.

Coloring is really a great learning experience. I’m glad your son loves it. 😊

My kids love to color!! These coloring pages are great! I am always looking for new pages for them.

I’m glad to be of help. 😊 I hope your kids enjoy these coloring pages. Thanks for dropping by!

These coloring pages for kids are great! My youngest loves to color and it’s one of the activities I use to help him calm down before nap time. Thanks for sharing them!

You’re welcome. 🙂 I really made these coloring pages for my nephew. Because most of the coloring pages in the market are too detailed. And at his age, he really doesn’t pay attention to those details. Thanks for dropping by! 😊

I agree with every point you have mentioned for coloring for toddlers. Even I have seen many people adapt to this method, and the results which they are getting, are in their favour. Coloring rules!!!

I like that-Coloring rules! It really does. 🙂 Very simple yet a lot of benefits. Thanks for leaving a comment.

Toys that Inspire Creativity in Toddlers

Like coloring, toys that give children the opportunity to make choices and discoveries are a powerful way to encourage learning in young minds.

Items like building blocks, musical toys, paper crafts, and stickers are also fun for adults to participate in.

We invested in a number of wooden toys and puzzles to encourage more creative play.

During our potty training days, I also purchased a few of these reusable sticker sets from Melissa and Doug – Marina still loves playing with them today!

When choosing toys and activities for your tot, think about the educational benefits and connections it can form – the more the merrier.

Coloring pages offer several advantages:

Coloring is an essential activity for toddlers as it contributes significantly to their overall development. It enhances their motor skills and hand-eye coordination and stimulates their creativity and cognitive development. Moreover, it can be a great way to introduce toddlers to different colors, shapes, and objects. Coloring can also help toddlers express their feelings and emotions, promoting emotional well-being.

When it comes to coloring materials for toddlers, safety and ease of use are paramount. Crayons are a popular choice as they are easy to grip and come in a variety of colors. Washable markers are also a good option as they are easy to clean up. Colored pencils can be used for older toddlers who have better control over their hand movements. Always ensure that the coloring materials are non-toxic and safe for children.

Colored pencils can be a great coloring tool for toddlers. They are available in a wide range of colors and can be used for detailed coloring. However, they may require a bit more control and precision, making them more suitable for older toddlers. When choosing colored pencils, look for ones that are non-toxic, have a thick barrel for easy gripping, and are durable to withstand the enthusiastic coloring of toddlers.

Coloring for toddlers should be a fun and enjoyable activity. Start with simple coloring pages with large, easy-to-color areas. It helps in developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Scribbling also allows toddlers to express their thoughts and emotions, fostering creativity and emotional development. Moreover, itcan be a fun and engaging activity that keeps them entertained.

Coloring games can make the coloring activity more fun and educational for toddlers. Here are a few ideas:

  • Color Matching Game: Have your toddler color a page and then find objects around the house that match the colors they used.

  • Storytelling through Coloring: Encourage your toddler to tell a story through their coloring page. This can enhance their creativity and communication skills.

Remember, the goal of these games is not to create perfect artwork, but to have fun and learn in the process.

Coloring boosts cognitive development in toddlers.

Let’s start by unraveling the fascinating process of cognitive development that high-spirited sketching and doodling can unleash in those tiny brains. When it comes to early childhood education , there’s no doubt that coloring works wonders in sharpening the mental faculties of your little geniuses.

Is your little munchkin always on the go, hopping from one activity to another? Coloring can help with that. Children practice concentration and focus as they decide which colors to use and painstakingly fill in the illustrations. And what’s best, they don’t even realize it!

Coloring hits the bullseye for hand-eye coordination! When toddlers try to keep their crayons within the lines, they’re honing their visual perception skills, learning to control their hand movements, and understanding how their hands and eyes should work together. It doesn’t matter if they go over the lines; they’re learning, and that’s the critical part.

Watch as their imagination soars while they paint their world in dazzling hues. With unlimited color combinations, children craft scenes from their fantasies or recreate cherished memories, cultivating creativity and inventive thinking .

Coloring promotes emotional development and expression for toddlers and preschoolers.

Coloring worksheets preschoolers

One of the essential parenting tips is nurturing your toddlers and preschoolers’ emotional well-being. And guess what? Coloring is a fantastic medium for kids to explore, understand, and manage their emotions better.

With every vivid swirl and stroke, your child’s self-confidence grows. As they triumphantly color their artworks and display their masterpieces, they experience immeasurable fulfillment and pride. Plus, the more they practice, the more they improve, further bolstering their belief in their abilities.

Just as adults find solace in knitting or baking, kids too can find comfort in coloring. This calming activity allows children to express even the most complex emotions simply by selecting colors and creating patterns. Whether they’re feeling happy, anxious, excited, or sad, coloring can provide an emotional outlet that might be otherwise challenging to verbalize.

Coloring encourages toddler bonding and socialization.

Who says coloring is a solitary activity? Break out the coloring books and watch as your child expands their social universe!

Coloring can transform into a fun group activity with siblings or friends. Children can learn to take turns choosing colors, negotiate, listen to others’ ideas, and work together on a collective masterpiece. Not only does this foster social skills , but it also teaches them invaluable lessons in teamwork and cooperation.

In their artistic escapades, kids have a chance to communicate with their peers. They might share stories that inspired their colorful creations or exchange valuable opinions and suggestions. This free-flowing conversation will undoubtedly enrich their social development and help them communicate better.

Coloring refines toddler fine motor skills.

For toddlers and preschoolers, mastering fine motor skills is an essential milestone. And marvelously, coloring offers a fun way to achieve that!

Your young artists build their hand muscles by grasping crayons with tiny fingers and learn to hold objects securely. This development will prove beneficial when they later grasp pencils to write or scissors to cut, facilitating increased precision and control.

As children scribble, trace, and color within shapes, their hand muscles strengthen, and the muscles controlling the movement of their fingers get a good workout. This eventually leads to better handwriting as they gain better control over their wrists, fingers, and hands.

Coloring as a stress reliever.

Yes, even toddlers and preschoolers experience stress! And good news, coloring can swoop in as a savior for your little ones in their most demanding moments, offering the tranquility they need.

Coloring engages a child’s focus on the task at hand, allowing them to block out external stressors temporarily. These singular moments can provide an opportunity to introduce mindfulness as they immerse themselves in a whirlwind of colors.

There’s something inexplicably soothing about gliding crayons over paper. Whether they’re frustrated, overwhelmed, or overstimulated, drawing and coloring can help soothe your little tyke, offering a sense of calm and safe space for emotional regulation.

Coloring aids language development.

Language development is an integral aspect of early childhood education, and you’ve got it – coloring helps with that too!

As your child enthusiastically scribbles away, they’re exposed to a dazzling universe of colors. Consider using these delightful coloring sessions to introduce new color names, light and dark shades, and patterns, expanding their vocabulary bit by bit.

Art is a means of expression, and as your child creates their colorful masterpieces, weave a story around them. Encourage your budding artist to share the inspiration behind their art, the characters involved, and the unfolding scenes. These conversations will significantly enhance their language development and communication skills.

Incorporating coloring into everyday life.

Now that you’ve discovered the fantastic benefits of coloring for toddlers and preschoolers , let’s make the most of it! Integrating coloring into everyday life couldn’t be more straightforward.

Establish a designated coloring area with coloring books, crayons, markers, and colored pencils. Make it an inviting creative corner that your child will be eager to explore.

Join your little artist in their coloring adventures. Your presence will encourage them to follow suit, and you’ll enjoy some fun bonding time too!

Develop a routine by setting aside designated coloring time each day or week. Your child will look forward to these immersive sessions, and you’ll revel in the pride of their continuous progress.

Keep things fresh and engaging by providing a diverse range of coloring materials. Experiment with coloring pages featuring animals, plants, vehicles, scenes, and more! The possibilities are endless, and your child’s excitement will remain ever-green.

There you have it! The world of coloring has so much to offer to your young artists in cognitive, emotional, social, and even physical development . So, dear parents, armed with these valuable parenting tips, let’s unleash creativity, joy, and growth – one crayon at a time!

Creating an inclusive and engaging coloring environment.

Setting up an inclusive and engaging environment is crucial to cultivating your child’s interest in coloring. In this section, let’s dive into some creative ideas that can make it even more rewarding and enjoyable for your little ones!

Nothing boosts a child’s pride like seeing their artwork on display! Dedicate a wall or fridge space to showcase your child’s beautiful creations. It can be a colorful tapestry of their evolving creativity, and each masterpiece will encourage their continued artistic journey.

Get your child involved in special occasions by asking them to create colorful greetings cards or gift tags for friends and family. Not only will this amp up their enthusiasm for coloring, but it will also teach them the joy of sharing and the significance of meaningful gestures.

Coloring doesn’t have to be limited to just crayons and markers. Encourage your child to try their hand at watercolors, pastels, and even finger painting! Different textures and materials will perfectly pique their curiosity and provide exciting new challenges in their artistic pursuits.

Entice your child’s interest by introducing different coloring techniques like blending, shading, and layering. You can also encourage them to experiment with various visual effects using crayons, such as rubbing over textures, coloring with the sides of the crayons, or even making wax resist art with watercolors.

We’ve explored the incredible world of coloring, along with its numerous benefits and creative ways to incorporate it into daily life. In the process, you’ve learned how to transform each stroke of color into a stepping stone towards your child’s cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development.

With a twinkle in your eye and a Bora Bora Blue or Outer Space Grey crayon in hand, you’re now all set to venture into the realm of hues, tints, tones, and shades with your little artists. So let the coloring journey commence, and treasure the moments you scribble, sketch, and create masterpieces together! Here’s to a future filled with enchanted forests, whimsical creatures, and kaleidoscopic wonders – a vibrant legacy of artistic memories you’ll cherish forever.

Faq: Unraveling the world of coloring for toddlers and preschoolers.

This section will address some frequently asked questions about coloring for toddlers and preschoolers. From suitable colors to potential concerns, we’ll help you navigate the colorful journey of artistic development for your little ones.

You can introduce coloring to your child as early as 18 months, with simple scribbling and doodling. By age 2, most toddlers are eager to explore colors and begin controlling their hand movements to create basic shapes and forms. However, remember that every child is unique, and the age may vary depending on individual development.

While most coloring materials are non-toxic, it’s essential to look for crayons, markers, and colored pencils that comply with safety standards like ASTM D4236. Ensure that your art supplies are age-appropriate and large enough to prevent choking hazards, especially for toddlers.

Yes! Young children can associate colors with specific emotions or meanings. As your child’s emotional awareness develops, encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings by using colors symbolically during their coloring sessions.

Definitely! Coloring helps develop the fine motor skills needed for writing. As your child grasps crayons and colors within shapes, they gain better control over their wrist, fingers, and hand movements, eventually leading to improved handwriting.

Create an inviting coloring station, engage in the activity with them, establish regular coloring time, and offer a variety of coloring materials to keep your child interested and excited about coloring.

The duration of a coloring session will differ for each child based on their individual attention span and interests. Generally, it’s better to keep sessions brief yet engaging for toddlers, gradually increasing the time as they grow older and more focused.

While coloring within lines aids in developing fine motor skills , the process should remain enjoyable and stress-free. Instead of correcting your child, encourage practice and let them learn at their own pace, celebrating their progress without pressure.

Introduce new colors by discussing their names and unique attributes. Associate different colors with objects or characters your child loves, or encourage them to mix and experiment to create a wide range of shades and tones.

Preferences can vary from child to child, regardless of gender. Encourage your little one to explore an entire spectrum of colors and various illustrations to discover what sparks their interest and creativity the most.

Take cues from your child’s curiosity, attention span, and ability to complete basic coloring tasks. When you notice increased interest and growth in those areas, you can gradually introduce more advanced coloring techniques, such as blending and shading.

Yes! Coloring can benefit children with special needs or learning difficulties, improving their cognitive, emotional, and motor skills. Consult your child’s therapist or educator for specific recommendations that cater to their unique needs and abilities.

Use washable coloring materials, such as water-based markers and washable crayons, for easy cleanup. For added protection, cover the coloring area with a washable tablecloth, plastic mat, or old newspapers to contain the mess and make tidying up a breeze.

While digital coloring apps can provide some benefits of traditional coloring, the experience may not be identical. Physical manipulation of coloring materials helps children develop their fine motor skills, whereas digital coloring relies more on hand-eye coordination. It’s best to incorporate both traditional and digital coloring experiences to support a well-rounded development.

Decoding the sky: A solar eclipse diagram for kids (adults also welcome)

Look up in the sky: It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's the moon covering the sun.

In just a few days a total solar eclipse will arrive in North America, and people are already pretty excited. But, what's the big deal really? Don't eclipses happen all the time? Well, this one is a bit different − rare even. And it only lasts a few minutes so it's good to be prepared beforehand.

Here's an illustrated guide to help you understand what the April 8 total solar eclipse means, where it will be visible and how you can watch it safely.

What is a total solar eclipse?

Not all eclipses are the same, they can look different, depending where on Earth you are and where the moon's shadow is.

Unable to view our graphics? Click here to see them.

More: What time is the total solar eclipse on April 8? Search your ZIP code for a viewing guide

Where can the total solar eclipse be viewed?

On April 8, NASA says, the total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing through Texas around 1:27 p.m. CDT and ending in Maine about 3:35 p.m. EDT. Anywhere along the eclipse path, the longest period of totality will be  4 minutes and 28 seconds , nearly double that of the 2017 solar eclipse.

Not everyone in the world will be able to see it, only people who happen to be in the path of the huge moon shadow.

How to safely view the solar eclipse

You can also create fun ways to view the eclipse without looking directly at the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. During that period called "totality," you can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona. Also the darkness can confuse animals – nocturnal creatures stir, and bird and insects fall silent. The solar eclipse will be the last of its kind that will be visible for people in the U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044, according to  NASA .
