Cardiologists - They are experts on diseases related to the heart and blood vessels. You might see them at a time of heart attack, high blood pressure, or irregular heartbeat.

“No se como decirle. (I don’t know how to tell you.)” I was 11 years old, trying to find the right words to explain to my mom what was going on inside of her body. My heart and mind knew, but I couldn’t accept it.  My heart crumpled up like a piece of paper about to be tossed into the trash. I hugged my mom; I wanted to wake up from what I wished was a nightmare.  

I knew there was no cure for cancer, but I also knew miracles exist. I wished one could come my way. After some stressful days and appointments, the doctors had told us only a miracle could save my mom. They were going to do as much as they could. I realized I had to prepare myself and my younger sister, and support and help my mom as much as I could. With work, treatment and not feeling well, she was stressed. I knew I had to step up.

Being a middle schooler, having a younger sister to look out for and finding out my mom could be taken away any day was hard.  By the age of 12, I dropped my after-school activities, took care of my sister, cleaned the house, helped my sister with her homework and, of course, went to school. I was challenged to work harder and become more independent. 

My mom is my hero and role model. It was just the three of us, so I had  to grow up fast, take care of myself and my family. Most importantly, I had to make mom feel like she had someone by her side. Ultimately, this situation taught me how to value every second of life. 

My mom always tells me to push forward, stay strong and become someone who can make a change in this world. I dream bigger now and am focused on becoming a doctor. I know I have to work hard and get good grades to be the person I want to be; my mom and our courageous experience inspire me every day. 

I hope someday I will be able to show my mom how thankful I am for every sacrifice she’s made. Miraculously, she’s better now, and she will see me graduate high school, go to college and pursue my dreams. I will make her proud. The skills, compassion and example she’s brought to my life help me now; they will make me a better student at the University of Minnesota; and someday they’ll help me be a caring, capable doctor.

My Dream to Become a Doctor: A Journey Begins

Having been through the clinical rotations, bone-breaking hard work, and extended hours of study for shelf assessments and boards, I know I ‘can’ be a doctor because I can sacrifice my own physical and mental comfort for the sake of patient care. I can rise above tiredness and exhaustion to run for a Rapid Response and at the same time get the calmness and yet the agility to run a code. I know I can be a doctor because I can separate myself and my life from the patient and care for him/her in the most effective way.

Roots of My Passion: My Early Life and Ambitions

Growing up in the village of Faisalabad, many people around me had few resources, were not well-educated, and were afraid to dream of a different life. However, I always had an ardent desire to study and learn, and even as a small child dreamed of being a doctor. I simply loved human biology and always wanted to comprehend why people had pain and why some had to suffer from chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes or arthritis. I believed in my heart that I could help people feel better, and that spurred me on. The support of my family and the successes I have had so far are the first steps in achieving that lifelong dream.

My Future Career: The Foundation Years in Medical College

The challenges of living in an underdeveloped area never dampened my spirits or deterred me from my goals. I went to a boarding school, which taught me the value of discipline, hard work, and perseverance. During this time, I was exposed to many students from all over the country, something that has steered me to appreciate and respect the diversity of various cultures. I, however, vividly remember the blissful moment when I got accepted to Sargodha Medical College. The satisfaction and sense of achievement associated with it was absolutely amazing. At Medical College, not merely was the flame of my childhood desire to help people improve their health rekindled, but everything I studied filled me with amazement and wonder.

Clinicals, Observership, and Beyond: Exploring the Facets of Family Medicine

During my clinical rotations, I have seen patients confide in their doctors about their most personal problems. The sensitivity and implied trust within this doctor-patient relationship seem crucial for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. My rotations in medicine reinforced my choice of profession. What fascinates me about Family Medicine is the interaction with a diversity of patients in complex clinical situations as well as the dynamic nature of disease management that constantly grows and changes with medical research and evidence-based medicine, which ensure a lifetime of learning. It keeps my interest alive and my curiosity ablaze.

To pursue Family medicine being practiced at its best and to keep up with the advancing world is what allured me to the US healthcare system. Having once adapted to an unfamiliar culture and a code of behavior to survive and fit in, I have gained confidence in my ability to serenely seek solutions even in unexpected scenarios, taking cues from my surroundings and finding ways to contribute. Shadowing different physicians has helped me comprehend the significance and importance of healthcare and quality treatments provided by a family physician. It has also refined my interactive skills with numerous patients and my work ethic and has facilitated me in developing a rapport with the ancillary staff. From a volunteer to clinical observership, my relationships have enriched and disciplined me, and by observing and exploring the different relationships in health care, I have gained a more comprehensive view of Family medicine. Through my experiences, I have proven to myself that I will fight alongside my patients through their ups and downs because I have overcome my own.

I want to be a physician who is not just a physician’ but be’ a physician’ who strives to provide the best possible health care to his patients and integrate work ethics in his practice of Family medicine. I look forward to a robust and challenging training program that will give me the knowledge and technical skills to become the best person and physician I can be.

From a relatively young age, my parents had taught me the importance of giving back to the community. As a child with frequent exacerbations of asthma, my visits to my family doctor got frequent too. I used to listen as my parents spoke to the doctor. I could not encompass the duties, responsibilities and dilemmas that accompany the profession, but it did become clear to me that doctors performed a great service to the community. Neither was I aware of the number of years of training that goes into becoming one, nor the difficulties and hardships that every doctor must endure.

As early as primary school, I developed a love for math and science. In high school, Biology was my primary subject and the complexity of the human body fascinated me. My interest in general surgery peaked during medical school. It began during my first year after being introduced to the anatomy and physiology of the human body. During my surgery rotations from second year onwards, the environment of the OR drew me even more to the field of surgery. As a fan of arts and crafts, it was amazing to see how surgery intertwined arts and science. The hands-on nature of surgery truly captured my interest. But all I could do as a medical student was look over the surgeons and intern’s shoulders, dreaming about the day I will hold the scalpel.

During my internship year, I got the chance to assist a couple of surgeries of which the most notable one was Transhiatal Esophagectomy and gastric pull up. Watching the surgeon maneuver inside the patient with precision and skill was a sight to behold! But, if I had to pick an event which solidified my interest in the field of surgery, it would have to be the first time I got to do the subcutaneous fat and skin closure after a C-section. It was by no means an achievement of any kind, but the surge of adrenaline that came over me the moment I held the scalpel confirmed my love for surgery.

To be a surgeon means not only to be intelligent and diligent, but also to possess the technical skill and dexterity to be creative and versatile. I enjoy the variety of procedures and I have honed my skills and improved my dexterity by practicing in the surgical skills lab during my internship. The ability to trust and work seamlessly with other surgeons and nurses is crucial to the success of a surgery. My leadership positions during my school days have helped me nurture my communication skills and my ability to work as a team.
