Daren Johnson, who was the lead Saxophone player. Errol Cooney, who was the Piano player. Benjamin Shepherd who was the Bass player. And Euro Zambrano who was the Drummer of the night. Also, Munyungo Jackson was in the event as a Percussion, who is an artist with over 50 years of experience in playing instruments and has performed with great musicians like Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Herbie Hancock. Throughout the course of the concert there was a mix of modern jazz and old jazz, and one of the old pieces that was played in the event was a piece called “Blue Monk” by Thelonius Monk. A song that was requested from a member of the audience, which I didn’t know was a famous song by a well-known and respected artist. However, it stood out to me because people around me sat in silence appreciating this song that I didn’t know was that well-known, but while I was lessening to it I noticed that the saxophone was playing the same tone over and over in reputation. At first I thought it’s a little bit boring, but over time I found it very relaxing. Plus, the harmony of all the instruments mixed together allowed me to enjoy this piece of great music with the crowed as if I know it before. One of the many observations that I can point out is that I liked the idea of having no distance between the artists and the crowed. Moreover, the fact that if desired a portion of the crowed can set right on the stage next to the artists which was one thing that insured a great musical experience for me. It also helped me to get one of the constructors signature at the end of the show because of the close distance between the crowed and artists. In conclusion, this concert at Blue Whale was by far one of the best experiences for me in America, even though that I was a bit reluctant to go to a jazz concert at the start because I have never been to one up until that point. I enjoyed the performance of the band in general and I’m looking forward to attending more concerts for this course as I have a passion of listening to different types of music that I wasn’t introduced to before like jazz.

Bach made the list as the symphony performed “Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” His religious tune mirrors his royal style. The trumpets of course get a front placement for this work and the song made me want to march around and praise something. Korsakov’s “Polonaise” followed which included vocalists for a less bright mood. His work was not all together eerie, but it did dim the mood a bit in the concert hall. Accompanying or underlying this musical work is an interesting story. It includes the devil and other fantastic characters as described in the program. I do not have space to elaborate, but it deserves another listen and close reading of the story. Debussy next appeared and as usual, his soft and delicate melodies lightened the performance and the audience. The flutes and clarinets seemed to be a favorite, and the brass played much in the background. The guest conductor seemed to have a special touch for the Frenchman’s work. The night concluded with Shostakovich’s “GALOP.” It was big and strong, and constituted a firm finish for the evening. Overall, I truly enjoyed the concert. My favorite aspect was the variety of pieces performed. I do not know what cohered all of the composers or the selection of songs, but getting to hear from so many time periods and styles increased my appreciation for classical music. The low point was Grainger’s work. I do not care for the modernist style of “classical” music. It does not flow well and seems to be making less beauty than disorganization. While I want to respect his work, I do not enjoy it. However, if I was a trained professional, I might like Grainger more. Some of the audience seemed truly intrigued by his piece. However, the majority of the crowd was soon ready for another tune. I think that this shows the level of musical expertise in the room. It was largely a less than music attendance. The other pieces were more easily enjoyed by me and those I sat near to. We discussed a bit of this after the show, when a lady asked me what I thought of the whole thing. I shared my thoughts and she mostly agreed. However, she comes to these concerts most every month. So I was assured that my tastes were more normal than not. In addition to my sense of normalcy, I think the symphony exhibited a high level of skill. They did not only play a broad scope of music, but they seemed to adapt to each piece. They played first not as the USA Symphony Band but as the original composer intended the music to be played.

The piece continued on for about eight minutes, alternating between the peppy brass inserts and the slow, melodic piano parts. At the end of the piece, there was a repetitive crescendo. “Dusk” by Steven Bryant was played next, and it opened with a single woodwind backgrounded by occasional low brass. A single melody ebbed into a multiple-part harmony as the song progressed. The band seemed kind of out of tune during this song. The tempo was very slow and gave a feeling that something was building up. This was a shorter song, maybe under five minutes, and there never seemed to be a climax to all of the buildup. Following “Dusk” was a song entitled “Sun Dance” by Frank Ticheli. This was also a shorter piece. It opened with a small snippet of brass and then an oboe took over and played a simple melody accompanied by random sections of brass, woodwinds, and percussion. The tempo vacillated between fast and slow, and there was not a lot of differentiation between the different sections of the song. There were some brass and percussion crescendos, some woodwind melodies, and multiple runs and trills that ended with cymbals and percussion accents. March from “1941” by John Williams was the final piece in the concert. It began in a similar fashion to many of the other pieces during the concert with a marching feel played by percussion, low brass, staccato notes, and high woodwinds and flutes. There were repetitive musical phrases throughout. Again, it sounded of Americana, like a patriotic song, a victory march. It built to a steady, marching beat and maintained this throughout. In general, the entire concert seemed like a “feel good” American music concert with the exception of the “Ave Verum Corpus” piece, which was somewhat out of place among the other pieces. The audience was appreciative, though, and it was an enjoyable experience overall.

This is a response paper to a classical music concert I attended at the Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles on the 7 th of December 2012. The title of the concert was ‘ Toyota Symphonies for Youths ’ created by Adam Reilly and Igor Stravinsky of the Musical Dramaturg and Production Consultant.

The music was conducted by Dietrich Paredes and directed by Abigail Deser. The main idea was to showcase a mix of classical music for the youth. The music was blended with fun and fantasy to entertain teenagers and young people, who are known to enjoy fun music. The first piece of art that I saw was written by Leon Martell and choreographed by Kitty McNamee.

In the main auditorium there was a nice synchronized melody of the blend of different musical instrument and a beautiful vocal performance from the performers. There were four performers; one lady and three gentlemen. The lady was mainly doing the vocals while one of the gentlemen was playing the piano, the other was playing an oboe and the last one was playing a bassoon. As usual the stage was well lit and the performers had confidence as they entertained the audience.

Since this was a classical music concert, it was obvious the kind of audience that would appreciate the performance. One interesting thing about this concert is the fact that classical music was incorporated with vocals. This is one of the modernizations that this genre of music has had to undergo. Before, it was very uncharacteristic for classical music to use vocals. The writings of the music had to be written down in musical notes and instruments used as the only means of output.

Apart from the performance of the first group there were other groups that also performed the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is an early piece that was first performed in 1922, by the Eugene Goossens. Just like in the previous performance the orchestra bands also did an amazing performance reading the notations from a script and playing the music with their different instruments.

Some of the instruments that I saw being played by the two groups were piano, organ, and harpsichord. These instruments are played mainly solo. Unlike the traditional classical music, I noticed there were several electric equipments that were used; for instance, electric guitar and synthesizers.

The music played by the two orchestra bands, were accompanied with impressive ballroom performances whereby ballet dancers would join the music and entertain the audience. The instruments used in classical music have undergone changes from the time the genre began.

There is a lot of modernization in which also includes the dress codes and the performers. In this concert each of the performers including the ballet dancer were dressed in suits. Considering the history of classical music and ballroom dancing, the kind of audience that enjoys these pieces of art are the elites of the society. It is usually a common thing to find the audience respecting the value of the music by observing decorum in the auditorium.

The music itself had balanced and harmonious phrases. The melodies were elegant that the audience was so impressed. Considering the nature of classical music from the traditional perspective, such pieces are only supposed to be performed in such a way. There is no need of oral presentations and recording. However, conventional classical music has tried to embrace certain things such as recording of the performances for commercialization purposes.

On the evening of December 4, 2015 I attended the live concert performance hosted by Master Showman, Composer and world-renowned violinist, Andre Rieu. The concert even was held at the “3 Arena” (23,000 capacity) in Dublin, Ireland. Andre Rieu has been recognized on many occasions as one of classical music’s greatest performer, conductors, and popularisers. During the entire duration of the classical performance, Rieu was immensely successful in retaining (especially the young generation or non-classical enthusiasts), the attention of the audience by intermissive humour, storytelling, host-to-audience conversation, and a whole lot of promotive dancing/singing along. The concert was extremely entertaining and an exceptionally fun night out to an event of genre, in which I had/have quite minimal knowledge and education in. The devotedly talented violinist and host brought with him to the show, his very famous and renowned Johann Strauss Orchestra. The orchestra was said to have approximately 50 members/performers permanently on stage during the concert event. The overall complete instrumentation, aside from Rieu himself, included Three Classical Soloist (Female Vocalists “Soprano”) 13 Violins, 5 Cellos, 1 Synthesizer, 1 Oboe, 6 Choir Members, 3 Double bass, 1 Piano, 1 Clarinet/Saxophone, 2 Flutes, 4 Violas, 3 Percussionists/kettledrums, 1 Accordion/bass trombone, 1 Saxophone/bassoon, 1 Tuba, 2 Trumpets, 1 Trombone, and 1 Horn. Rieu would commonly begin the introduction of each song on his violin while the orchestra would eventually and gradually back him up to progress into a graduatively full orchestration and supplemental sound. The concert consisted of exactly 22 musical numbers, including the final encore song. The setlist was performed as follows: Opening No. Seventy-Six Trombones, The Second Waltz, Besame mucho, Nessun Dorma (Tribute to Luciano Pavarotti), Volare, Adieu, Mein Kleiner Gardeoffizier, Chiu Chiu, Cielito Lindo, Amor, Vida de mi Vida, Espana Cani, Oh Fortuna, Strauß & Co, Libiamo, Amazing Grace, Das Ist Die Liebe Der Matrosen, An der schönen blauen Donau, Ode an die Freude, El Condor Pasa, Irgendwo auf Der Welt, La Vie en Rose, and the encore entitled Marina, Marina. Each individual song had its own personality to it, as the selections were said to have been made by the composer himself from a list of old classics in which he enjoyed either listening to growing up, heard during his younger day travels, simply world classics, etc. Therefore it was splendid to have a wide variety of international and ethnic numbers that everyone in the audience and around the world could enjoy. The concert had a wide variety of dynamics, tempos, and moods to it, which ultimately in my opinion made it more appealing than ever. For example, his opening Number entitled Seventy-Six Trombones had a forte dynamic with the entire orchestra playing all at once while the crown welcomed the musicians on stage. The song was very upbeat and joyful while many groups of individuals were happily leaving their seats and dancing to the music within the isles. It must be said that the most common element of dynamics during the duration of the event was Rieu’s crescendo use which lead through almost every song on the setlist. However some of the songs that were generally Pianissimo and piano took a full orchestration approach however the songs volume gradually increased by means of everyone simply playing louder and louder as a group, all at the same time leaving out no orchestral members or vocalists (when necessary). The diversity of the concert and its overall mood was very diverse. This was a beautiful element of the concert as it literally had its ups and downs in tempo, mood and dynamics. Some of the slow and sad songs such as Vida de mi Vida, An der schönen blauen Donau Blue Danube, and Amazing Grace, had audience members in tears as the beauty, serenity, and tranquil composure echoed throughout the Amphitheatre. On another note it was outstandingly intriguing to hear classical numbers in which many of us hear numerous times in our everyday lives, yet we never stop to question of its classical origins, a few examples of this being: La Vie en Rose (which I recognized from a Travel; Paris, France Commercial), Ode an die Freude (Ludwig van Beethovens “Ode To Joy”) from the “Drink Milk, Love Life!” commercial ad from the late 90’s I remember hearing over and over again, and An der schönen blauen Donau which is a world renowned composition recognized by many in North America as the plane landing scene in the Stanley Kubrick 2001 film: A Space Odyssey as well as the main theme commonly played at midnight sharp on new year’s; simply to name a few. The entire concert seemingly went perfectly as rehearsed and planned as from a common spectators point of view as my own, the musicians and Andre Rieu himself sounded, spoke and acted spot on as the thankfully the entire show ran outstandingly smoothly. His orchestra is made up of exceptional musicians who should be given lots of credit for their skill, patience, mastery, attention to detail, perfection, perseverance, and timeliness. Andre Rieu was exceedingly kind and devoted to his audience members by constantly thanking them for joining him and the others during the evening. He was completely engaged by asking everyone to sing and dance along during certain numbers, while a few times he stepped of the stage to high five some of the front and second row audience members. This is always something to be severely admired by any celebrity/musician of such high status as it makes one feel as equals, important, and appreciated. Upon completion of the encore, as all of the orchestra members stood up and bowed all altogether at once, the venue released a large shower of balloons. I had absolutely no complaints and/or dislikes after attending the concert and it has indeed opened up my horizons on classical music and any genre of international music for that matter, as I had not this outlook before attending this live event. Born André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu on October 1949, the exceptionally talented conductor and violinist is of French-Dutch ethnicity. Rieu is most famously recognized on an international level for forming the Johann Strauss Orchestra. It is Rieu and his orchestra who have not only attracted the older generation for his supplementary classical and waltz performances, the musician has also obtained quite a large youth-based crowd by turning the act into an international worldwide touring act. The artist stated at his live performance in Dublin that he had begun studying and playing the violin at the very early age of five. From very early on Rieu acquired an indestructible fascination with the orchestra and all of its elements. Throughout Rieu’s career thus far, he has received honours such as the Order of the Netherlands Lion by the Netherlands, the Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France, and the Honorary Medal by his native Province of Limburg, which was all displayed on the concert brochure which everyone received upon arrival at the 3 Arena. Other information under his biography included his credential of graduation from the Conservatoire Royal in Liège and the Conservatorium Maastricht from 1967–1973. Rieu also attended and received a degree from the Brussels, Music Academy. It was in 1987 when Rieu formed the Johann Strauss Orchestra alongside his very own production company that is still widely in use today. He is commonly referred to and associated as the master of the waltz revival as we know it. The immensely talented violinist is always very proud to mention that he plays specifically, a 1667 Stradivarius violin. This was mentioned about midway through the live performance as he introduced the orchestra and himself briefly to the audience. Rieu is full of jokes, laughter, fun-filled interaction and some of the most outstanding music I have ever heard in my entire life. I am very grateful that I had a chance to witness such an extraordinary event with extraordinary talented individuals.

I saw Beyoncé get booed at the CMAs. I’ve been waiting for 'Cowboy Carter.'

To that inevitable icebreaker question, “What was your first concert?” my heart always beats with excitement at the chance to share that in 2000, when I was 8, I was lucky enough to see the group that’s now known as The Chicks . But almost every time I give that answer, I get confused looks, blank stares and sometimes laughs. Women in country music were all I was ever interested in when I was growing up, and many of the kids at school made fun of me for that. It wasn’t the cool thing to do, especially for a Black kid. But not even seeing my favorite group when I was 8 compared to the November 2016 CMA Awards when The Chicks were joined by an unannounced Black artist whose love of country music has also been questioned .

Women in country music were all I was ever interested in when I was growing up, and many of the kids at school made fun of me for that.

As soon as I heard those horns begin playing and heard Beyoncé say the word “Texas,” I knew that we at the CMAs were in for the treat of her performing her then-hit “Daddy Lessons.” Even better, she was performing it with The Chicks, the group I grew up thinking was everything. And then I heard a woman in the row ahead of me yell, “Get that Black b---- off the stage!”

In a March 19 Instagram post promoting “ Act II: Cowboy Carter ,” her album that was released today, Beyoncé wrote, “This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed… and it was very clear that I wasn’t . But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.”

Beyoncé did not say exactly which experience had left her feeling unwelcome, but the hostile, often racist, responses she got on social media after performing at the 2016 CMAs and the CMAs taking down a post promoting her and The Chicks were big news ( a spokesperson for the award show said the post hadn’t been approved by Beyoncé).

The day after their performance with Beyoncé, The Chicks posted a link to “Daddy Lessons” on social media and wrote, “ If we all turn this up really loud, together we can drown out the hate .”

The woman in front of me yelling at Beyoncé had so much rage in her voice. Months later, I was still replaying that moment in my head. I’d ask myself: Do people feel this way about me when I enter the country music space?

Five years later, while listening to Rissi Palmer’s “Color Me Country” radio show on Apple Music, I crossed paths with Holly G, the founder of the Black Opry , a home for Black artists, fans and industry professionals working in country, Americana, blues and folk music. I accepted her invitation to the 2021 CMAs, the first time I’d been there since I saw Beyoncé disrespected. This time, because I’d found my community, the environment felt different. I felt supported.

“My hope is that years from now, the mention of an artist’s race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant,” Beyoncé  said in that March 19 Instagram post.

A common experience among Black country artists and fans is feeling unwelcome. Many of us were told that country music wasn’t meant for us. I think for a majority of us Black country music fans, we waited until we were a little older and less concerned with fitting in to be open about being fans of the music. That is, we became more open about or love for the music when we became more interested in finding the joy in standing out and being authentically ourselves. With the release of “Cowboy Carter,” we find solidarity with Beyoncé, who’s been open about feeling unwelcome in the country music space. Our hope is that with so many eyes on Beyoncé and Black country artists, there will be greater appreciation for Black people’s history in country music and Black country artists across the board will be in higher demand.

Beyoncé made history when her song “ Texas Hold ‘Em ” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. According to Billboard.com, “Prior to the triumph for ‘Texas Hold ‘Em,’ no Black woman, or female known to be biracial , had previously topped Hot Country Songs .” That feat is worth celebrating, but it’s not at all surprising to learn that Beyoncé has a song at the top of the charts. The more pressing question is what are country radio programmers going to do for Brittney Spencer , Camille Parker , Chapel Hart, Roberta Lea , Julie Williams , The Kentucky Gentlemen and so many other Black artists who have been knocking on country music’s doors for years? How are the people coming to the genre because of Beyoncé going to respond to those artists?

During the flood of adoration for Queen Bey’s new accomplishments, there’s a whole community of Black country fans who are hopeful that the visibility she brings to the music quickly turns to financial and substantial long-term support for lesser known Black artists in country music.

Tanner Davenport is a Nashville native who has been a fan of country music ever since he was a kid. He is a co-director of the Black Opry — a home for Black artists, fans and industry professionals working in country, Americana, blues, folk and roots music — and an artist manager in Nashville.

Madonna Responds to Fan Lawsuits Over Concert Delays

P op icon Madonna has defiantly addressed the allegations made against her regarding the postponement of her concert start time, which has led to legal action from some attendees.

Fans have described the tardiness as a deliberate act of “false advertising, negligent misrepresentation and unfair and deceptive trade practices,” based on the court papers provided by the Daily Mail . The lawyers of the music legend, however, are dismissing such expectations as unreasonable, especially for those who are familiar with Madonna’s history.

“No reasonable concertgoer – and certainly no Madonna fan – would expect the headline act at a major arena concert to take the stage at the ticketed event time,” they contested, emphasizing that attendees received a complete and high-quality performance from the renowned “Queen of Pop.”

Parade previously covered that Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden filed a lawsuit against the artist after her New York City Celebration Tour concert commenced hours later than scheduled. They claimed that they, along with Live Nation and the Barclays Center, were not informed of this delay in advance, and also mentioned that Madonna is known for not beginning her shows on time.

The legal complaint highlighted that the venue’s spectators were left in an inconvenient situation late at night with sparse public transportation options and responsibilities such as work and family awaiting them the next day.

Madonna described the claims as “illogical and self-contradictory,” criticizing the two for failing to present a viable case against her. She requested the dismissal of this lawsuit, arguing that the alleged misinformation on the tickets could not have deceived them since the tickets were only provided after purchase, and no other forms of false advertising were cited by the plaintiffs in their claim.

No verdict had been reached on this matter when the initial report was made.
