Flesch Kincaid Calculator

This Flesch Kincaid Calculator can be used to show how readable your text is by providing a Flesch Readability Ease score and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level score.

Instructions: Cut-and-paste the text you want to test into the box below, then click "Calculate"; this will give you the text's readability scores.

Enter text here:

Flesch Reading Ease Score

The Flesch Reading Ease Score was first used in 1948 to show how readable a text is. The score lets you know the approximate educational level a person will need to be able to read a particular text easily.

How comprehensible a document is will be indicated on the Flesch Reading Ease Score by a number between 0 and 100. Scores around 100 mean the document is extremely easy to read, while scores around 0 mean that it is highly complex and difficult to understand. Conversion tables can be used to translate the score into educational levels, e.g., if the score is around 70 to 80 that equates to the text being appropriate for around school grade level 7, i.e., the average adult should find it reasonably simple to read.

The Flesch Reading Ease score is arrived at by using this equation:

Flesch Reading Ease Score = 206.835 − 1.015 × ( Total Words / Total Sentences ) − 84.6 × ( Total Syllables / Total Words )

These scores are used by policy writers, research communicators, and digital marketers in order to find how easily a target audience will be able to understand and engage with a particular text.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level shows what educational level a person will need in order to understand a particular text.

The scores created by the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level match up to the US grade levels of education readers will need to be able to comprehend a particular text, e.g., if the text has a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level of 9, to be able to understand the document easily the reader would have had to have undergone around nine years of education (i.e., reached around 9th grade).

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is assessed by examining how many words, sentences, and syllables a document contains, employing the equation below:

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level = 0.39 × ( Total Words / Total Sentences ) + 11.8 × ( Total Syllables / Total Words ) − 15.59

Difficult and Extraneous Word Finder

The difficult & extraneous word finder helps you write clearly and concisely by identifying possible weak points in your prose, including rare words, hard words, adverbs and extra hedge words.

Passive Voice Detector

Sentences with passive voice construction tends to contain extra words when compared to its active voice counterpart. Extra words make for longer sentences which can be more difficult to understand. Use Passive Voice Detector to find these overly wordy sentences.

Spell Checker

Highlights spelling mistakes in a passage of text.

About the Readability Analyzer

What is Readability? Readability refers to the ease in which a passage of written text can be understood. It is often used in assessing the suitability of a text for an audience. Some states even have requirements that legal documents and health care documents must met strict readability thresholds in order to be accessible to a wide audience. If you want to get your ideas across to the largest audience possible, it is worth spending some time thinking about readability.

Readability metrics, such as the Flesch-Kincaid and Gunning Fog index, are algorithmic heuristics used for estimating readability. Many work by counting words, sentences and syllables while others use lists of already scored words.

Keep in mind that readability is not a measure of writing quality and that these heuristics are only estimates of a passages readability.

This Readability Analyzer estimates the readability of a passage of text using the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease , Gunning Fog Index , Kincaid Grade Level , SMOG formula and Dale–Chall Score and Fry Reading Graph metrics. Which one's right for you? That will depend partially on your domain and writing style. Different readability metrics flag difficult words in different manners. For example, the Fog index considers words with more than three syllables difficult, where Dale-Chall has a list of easily recognizable words. We suggest using a few different samples of text and going with the metrics that more closely align with human evaluations.

The Analyzer works best with plain text.

Improving Readability. We recommend focusing on the passage as a whole, rather than individual sentences when looking to improve readability. Be careful when iteratively tweaking a passage not to fall into the trap of writing for the formula. Writing to the formula could lead passages that contain shorter, choppy sentences that are actually more difficult to read despite receiving a better score.

We have provided two tools to aid rewriting a passage. The Difficult and Extraneous Word Finder can be used to explore vocabulary. It identifies rare words, and long polysyllabic words with more than three syllables which may be harder for an audience to understand. The Difficult and Extraneous Word finder also finds extraneous words, such as adverbs and double hedge words which may make a sentence needlessly longer. Passive Voice Detector identifies sentences with passive structure. Passive voice is common in the scientific literature because it places the emphasis on the object being investigated rather than the author doing the investigation. Sentences with passive voice construction, however, tend to be longer, and harder to read.

IELTS

Basically, the IELTS calculators calculates overall IELTS score by adding IELTS bands in Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking and then dividing the total score by 4. The scores of all computer-delivered IELTS modules are equally weighted. So, even though you might perceive practice of one part more difficult over others, in IELTS examiners’ eyes all modules are equally important and the IELTS score calculator used is already predefined. When it comes to rounding the average score, the average IELTS score is generally rounded up to the next nearest half or full band, whichever comes first.

IELTS TOEFL-iBT CEFR

If you are coming from TOEFL iBT or CEFR (Common European English Framework) background and want to know IELTS equivalent or vice versa, then use the IELTS score calculator / converters below:

Reading & Listening

Often IELTS candidates, without having any access to an IELTS overall band calculator, are confused what their reading and listening part scores mean in terms of IELTS bands or vice versa. Use the IELTS band score calculator below to convert raw reading and listening scores to bands and reading and listening bands to raw scores.

How to Convert IELTS Listening & Reading Raw Scores to Bands?

Calculation from raw IELTS listening score to IELTS band is the same for IELTS General Training & Academic IELTS. For example, if you get 30 marks in the listening section of GT IELTS, you will get 7 bands and the same holds true for Academic IELTS as well.

However, IELTS reading raw to band score tables are different. For instance, in order to get 7 band in Academic IELTS, you will need 30 correct reading answers, whereas 34 correct marks are required for 7 in General Training IELTS.

Type in a number from 0 to 40 in the IELTS reading and listening calculator below to find out how many bands you would get in reading and listening modules.

How to Convert IELTS Reading & Listening Bands to Raw Scores?

Calculation from listening band score to IELTS raw score is the same for IELTS General Training & Academic IELTS. For example, if you get 30 marks in the listening section of GT IELT, you will get 7 bands and the same holds true for Academic IELTS as well.

However, IELTS reading band score to raw tables are different. For instance, in order to get 7 band in Academic IELTS, you will need 30 correct reading answers, whereas 34 correct marks are required for 7 in General Training IELTS.

Type in a band from 0 to 9 in the calculator below to find out how many correct marks you might have achieved in reading and listening modules.

Writing Task 1 + Task 2

You will not get the same score for task 1 and task 2 part when it comes to calculating overall writing score. Writing Task 2 (Essay) has twice the weightage as compared to Writing Task 1 (Letter/Report). For illustration purpose only, you can imagine IELTS Essay is worth 6 bands and Letter/Report will fetch you 3 band score. It's pretty clear an IELTS candidate needs to spend double the practice time on essay part.

Use the IELTS Writing calculator to find out how many correct answers you would need to be a specific band score in IELTS Academic Reading part. As per the IELTS website calculator guide, one typically needs 30 right answers to get 7 band in IELTS Academic Reading part. Here is the formula used:

If Essay = 6 and Letter = 7, then

(2 x 7 + 7) / 3

6.67 (rounding down to 6.5)

Overall Writing Score = 6.5

Type your Writing Task 1 (Letter/Report) and Task 2 (Essay) band score in the calculator below to find out the final writing band score. Note that the formula is the same for both Academic and General Training IELTS.

The marking criteria for IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 part have some differences. While 3 of the 4 band descriptors are the same, it’s the Task Achievement Task 1 (Report/Letter) and Task Response in Task 2 (Essay) part which have some dissimilarities. Check the table below before you practice IELTS writing part:

Type your score in the 4 writing assessment criteria and find out what score you would get:

Requirements

  • Only whole numbers are accepted. Fractions are not allowed.

Using Band Descriptors

How to Convert Speaking Band Descriptors Scores to IELTS Speaking Band using Speaking Calculator?

The marking criteria for IELTS Speaking section include 4 band descriptors range from 0 to 9. The speaking band descriptors are different from IELTS writing band descriptors but lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy have some broad similarities. Now let’s have a look them below:

Type in your score in any of the 4 speaking assessment criteria part into this IELTS score calculator and find out overall IELTS Speaking band score you would get.

Medical Board of Australia for Doctors and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for Nurses accept IELTS Scores in two sittings within 6 months. However, there are some conditions which one must meet. Similarly, Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK allows international nurses to use IELTS in 2 sittings for their registration.

If you are unsure whether you meet their target or not in each part, use the IELTS calculators below in 2 steps. Step 1, lets you find out if both your IELTS results fall within 6 months. Step 2 shows whether the scores can be combined or not for each IELTS part

Nursing & Miwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Australia

Clubbing requirements.

  • Minimum Overall should be 7
  • No Band should be less than 6.5

The International English Language Testing System (better known as IELTS), is a testing system designed to measure the English language competency of non-native English speakers who intend to practice, study and/or work in English-speaking countries. Let’s take a closer look at the online IELTS Score Calculator and how it will help you to know the correct band or score all by yourself.

The test looks at the abilities of candidates in four areas – speaking ,  writing ,  reading , and  listening  – to assess their overall English ability, although it is of course tailored for candidates who have a specific purpose of foreign education, licence registration to practice as a doctors or nurses, or work.

IELTS also underwent some changes over a period of time with recent additions being, IELTS indicator and computer-delivered IELTS. The latter has become quite popular among both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training (GT) candidates. Hence, they prefer to practice IELTS on a computer. It is important to note that the IELTS calculator in the past may be relevant.

IELTS Band Scores Chart Explained

Since inception IELTS is graded on a Band scale 0 to 9 for each of the four sections, which are also called IELTS modules. The highest possible band score is 9 and the lowest is 0, as can be seen from the following table:

IELTS General Band Score Chart and Description for 2021 & 2022

Read the IELTS general band score chart to understand the IELTS band scores.

IELTS Test Format and Marking

IELTS examines candidates’ abilities in speaking , writing , listening and reading part. As such, there are four separate modules, one part for each of these areas. The two receptive skills – reading and listening – are intended to determine how well a candidate can understand written and spoken English in academic as well as everyday settings. Listening and speaking modules are the same regardless of General Training or Academic IELTS part. However, some difference exists in Reading and writing sections. While there is a graph and an essay to be written in Academic IELTS, General Training candidates are required to write a letter and an essay. Similarly Reading module contains 3 long reading texts in Academic IELTS part, but GT IELTS has 1 long reading text and 3 to 5 short texts. Raw score to band computation with the IELTS band score calculator is also different in Academic and GT IELTS.

IELTS Test Types

IELTS comes in 2 different types

  • Paper Based
  • Computer-delivered IELTS

IELTS TEST FORMAT

The reading and listening IELTS modules are marked by experienced IELTS examiners at the testing center. They will be randomly and anonymously assigned in order to prevent any sort of cheating. The examiners are required to strictly follow a guide that tells them how to mark your answers and calculate IELTS scores. Accuracy and legibility are important in both these modules as the examiners may mark an answer wrong which is either not full or grammatically incorrect (despite having the same meaning).

Speaking & Writing

If you are writing paper-based IELTS part, then essays, letters/reports papers from the writing test will be collected and randomly assigned to examiners for grading. These may even be rechecked in order to ensure that a fair band score has been assigned.

In case of computer-delivered IELTS, the writing answer is automatically submitted soon after the time finishes. As in the former case, essays, letters and reports are randomly assigned and the examiners have no idea whose writing task they are evaluating.

IELTS speaking part is always face-to-face where the examiner will ask you a set of questions and record the entire interview. The examiner will give you band score on the 4 band descriptors at the end of the interview. These scores will then fed into the system to calculate the final IELTS speaking score.

You may well ask how the speaking and writing tests are assessed. In other words, what are the examiners looking to hear or read from the IELTS candidates? The criteria are somewhat similar, with a few differences. They are listed in the table below:

IELTS is a gold standard of English testing system across the world. There is a wide range of training material available and the test is pretty straight forward as compared to other tests, such as TOEFL iBT, PTE, CELPIP and so on. Most of the candidates are looking for 6 band score in each part, whereas 7 is considered to be an excellent band score in majority of the case notes.

We hope you have found the IELTS band score calculator above useful. If you are looking for IELTS preparation with personalised feedback and excellent resources, feel free to use our IELTS Writing Correction and Speaking Mock Test services.

What does the Text Analyzer do?

The Text Analyzer can rate the difficulty level of a text according to the Common European Framework, or CEFR Levels .

ESL teachers may wish to use this tool to:

  • determine the approximate level of proficiency that the text is suitable for
  • generate a suggested vocabulary list
  • compare the difficulty levels of two texts
  • get meanings for the suggested vocabulary list (via ninjawords.com)

How to use the Text Analyzer

Simply copy and paste your text in the box above and click SUBMIT. You will get more accurate results for texts of over 50 or so words.

How does the Text Analyzer work?

Each word in the submitted text is compared to a list of the 10,000 most commonly used words in English. Based on each word's position on the list and the average word and sentence length, an algorithm is used to rate the difficulty of the text.

You can expect slightly different results compared to the Flesch-Kincaid Index. The Flesch-Kincaid index mainly looks at sentence length and word length, whereas this tool focuses on complexity of language.

What is word complexity?

This is the average position of the words in the list of 10,000 most frequent words in English. Hence, the lower the score, the easier the text and the higher the score, the more difficult.

I analysed three main textbooks used in secondary schools in the region where I live to see how much key vocabulary they shared. Thanks to Text Inspector I discovered that the vocabulary they had was from a disproportionately wide range of levels, from A1 to C2. I also found a high proportion of vocabulary not listed. Thanks! Text Inspector formed an important part of the investigation.

However, it will no longer stay that way because we want to let you behind the curtain of this magical tool. So when you click on the "check writing level" button our tool starts running diagnostics. check-readability

Readability Score

The first thing you can see in the readability score checker is obviously a readability score calculator. It uses several combined tests and their unique characteristic to say what exactly you can do with your text. Is it easy to read? What sort of audience can read it? Our readability score is based on Flesch Reading Ease, Flesh Kinkaid Grade Level, SMOG Index, Gunning Fog Score, and Automated Readability Index. It's totally okay if those words make no sense. But we will also touch upon major terms.

check-difficulty-of-text

Text Difficulty Level

Our text complexity tool starts by determining overall text complexity. Some texts are specifically created for their target audience. If you are in college — the text must fit certain requirements. In high school, you can get away with laxer language. By seeing the level of difficulty you can ensure that your text is understood by your intended audience. In this situation, everyone wins!

check-complexity-of-sentence

Sentence Complexity

Sentence complexity analyzer can tell you all about your sentences. How long are they? Do you have two complex sentences together? Should you put in shorter sentences? Can your audience read the text or there are some changes to be made? This is why you need a sentence readability checker. This tool considers the average length of sentences and the percentage of long sentences. This way you can find a perfect balance and make your text understandable for those who need to read it.

So don't hesitate to try out this tool as it does not require anything in return.

What Factors Are Considered During Readability Check

So what exactly happens when you check readability online? Well, when our tool starts working it turns on an online readability assessment that uses the factors below for your results:

  • Average sentence length How long are your general sentences, and whether they need to be shortened?
  • Number of syllables Longer words and more academic words naturally have more syllables that increase complexity.
  • Percentage of long words There must be at least some balance between complex and easy language.
  • Average length of words No one wants to read a never-ending list of long words written in a row.
  • Percentage of commonly used words Keywords are met everywhere, but they should not stick out from your text like a sore thumb.
  • Difficulty of sentences Using passive constructions or compound sentences might complicate your written piece.

Fortunately, when you pay someone to write my essay at StudyCrumb, you get an easy-to-read paper written conforming to all scholastic standards.

We come back to the methods and techniques later. Continue with us!

Readability Formulas Used to Determine Readability Index

Are you curious about formulas that our online readability calculator uses? We've got you covered. It combines a variety of characteristics and tests that provide the best possible results. Similar formulas are integrated in our essay rater . We also try to combine all those formulas into readability tools that satisfy every request. So are you looking for a readability test free? We have a Flesch Kincaid readability test online available that features an easy interface and the best quality. To give context, we've created sections below.

Flesch Reading Ease Score Calculator

Are you familiar with the Flesch reading ease calculator? It's a good thing that we are then because it can help you out. Our Flesch reading ease test online calculates using several characteristics:

  • Word length
  • Sentence length

Weighting the aforementioned factors helps our machine check how complex your text is. Funny enough, the system itself was actually created by the U.S. Navy. Now you're enjoying all its benefits and improving the quality of your piece for readers.

Are you dealing with a complicated paper? Why not order essay online and get professional help?

Flesch Kincaid Grade Level Checker

The Flesch-Kincaid readability tool is not far from the previous tool. They were actually invented simultaneously and use similar characteristics. Flesch Kincaid readability calculator also evaluates:

However, their value this time is slightly different. It also counts the total number of words and sentences. With precise mathematical calculations, it can tell you what people can read your text. Flesch Kincaid grade level online is easily accessed here. So there's no need to look anywhere else!

Gunning Fog Index

Our readability software can do so much more than we have already talked about. Gunning Fog index allows us to evaluate:

  • Number of words per sentence
  • Quantity of long words

It is much more simple than it sounds: short sentences with equally short words get higher scores because they are easier. "Fog" is added to the text if a person doesn't understand what they are waiting about. In other words: the simpler the better. So make sure you test your document's readability now to show how well you know your topic or have an expert " do my assignment ". Avoid fog and achieve clarity!

Automated Readability Index

Automatic readability checker asses written pieces quite similar to other tools using:

  • Word difficulty (number of letters per word)
  • Sentence difficulty (number of words per sentence)

So when you check readability online the test runs a couple of formulas. For example, if your index is 10 — the text is perfect for high school students. Depending on the index, the text will fit varied categories and ages. The same principle is applied for other similar techniques and formulas. We just combine them all together into one excellent test.

SMOG Index Readability Check

Our best automatic readability checker does not shy away from using the SMOG index. What would you ask? Well, it stands for Simple Measure of Gobbledygook. Did not help much, now did it? Let's put it in a different way. When we are assessing readability, we also estimate the years of education the average person needs to understand any piece of writing. That's how this tool works:

  • The machine counts 10 sentences near the beginning, 10 in the middle, and 10 near the end
  • Analyzes every word with 3 or more syllables
  • Rounds it to the nearest 10
  • Adds three to this figure.

And voila! You know how to change your text or whether there is nothing to improve.

FAQ About Writing Level Detector

In case you still have some questions about this handy writing level checker, we've got the answers below!

1. What is readability?

Readability is a characteristic of a text. It shows whether people can read one's text with ease. There are different levels of this characteristic depending on the intended target audience. It is obvious that 6th graders have easier language and less complexity than graduate ones. Therefore, the level of language has also been used here.

2. Why is readability important?

Now that we know what readability is we can talk about its importance. Why do we care about and create special tools? It is rather simple. If the text is hard to comprehend, many people will just stop reading. Your thoughts will be lost even if they are interesting, and they will simply remain unheard. By improving this characteristic you will make sure your voice is heard.

3. How is the readability index calculated?

You surely want to know how we calculate the readability index. Here we use a variety of formulas that are balanced and combined to create one unified tool. There are several steps that our machine takes. For example, short sentences are usually easier to comprehend than long ones. The same goes with simple, short words, commonly known words when compared to specific terms or old-fashioned words.

4. Is 50 a good readability score?

Depending on your readability score, different people will understand your text. 50 is not usually recommended as a good score. We would say that 60-70 is much better. So make sure you analyze your text!

Essay Word Counter

What Is Essay Word Counter?

An essay word counter is a simple yet powerful tool that has the ability to quickly count the number of characters and words within an essay. While the primary goal of an essay word counter is to measure characters and words, this tool allows you to determine the number of sentences and paragraphs that your essay consists of.

If you're tasked with reading your essay aloud in front of a classroom, this online word counter can help you prepare by providing you with an estimated speaking time and reading time. If you're asking yourself "How do I count the words in my essay?", plugging your essay into an online word counter will allow you to receive nearly instantaneous results.

Benefits of Using This Tool Compared to Alternatives

Online word counter tools offer the functionality you need to determine what your current essay word count is. There are several additional tools that can provide you with similar functionality, which include Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and PDF documents. Even though all of these alternatives allow users to measure the word count and character count for their essay, they lack many of the extra features that set the online tool apart from the competition.

Wordcounter vs Microsoft Word

When comparing this online word counter to Microsoft Word, the online word counter allows users to paste any kind of text into the box. Even if the text comes from a PDF file, it can be easily copied into the word counter. Among all of the alternatives for an essay word counter, Microsoft Word may be the most comprehensive of the three. Along with measuring the number of words, it can also count characters, pages, lines, and paragraphs. The main issue with Word, however, is that it's less intuitive than using an online tool.

When you click on word count in Microsoft Word, you'll be provided with data on the lines, paragraphs, words, and other aspects of your essay. However, the word count extends to every page of the Word document. To identify the number of words and characters in a specific section, you'll need to highlight the section and select the word count option again.

Wordcounter vs Google Docs

As for Google Docs, this tool doesn't display a status bar that tells you how many words are present in the document. To receive an updated word count, you must select the "Tools" tab that's found in the "Menu" section. From here, you'll be able to select "Word Count". When compared to the online word checker tool, Google Docs doesn't include information about how many sentences are in your essay or the frequency of a specific word.

Wordcounter vs PDF Tool

When it comes to a PDF document, you'll find that these documents are similar to Google Docs in that they don't include a status bar. You're also unable to access any kind of menu that allows you to view the word count of the essay you're writing. There are two distinct options for identifying the word count in your essay. First, you can convert the PDF file into what's known as the Rich Text Format, which makes it easier for you to count the words. You could also upload the file directly into this online word counter, which will give you an accurate word total.

The primary benefit of using the online word counter tool is that there are a number of exclusive features like speaking time and reading time that can't be found in other tools like Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Essay Length Best Practices

Whether you're writing an essay for a high school class or for graduate school, there are some best practices that can guide you through the process and help you write the best essay. The most important element of writing an essay is getting the length right. If the essay is too long, there's a good chance it isn't as succinct and direct as it should be. The essay length guidelines you should adhere to include:

High school essay

The average essay word count for a high school essay is 300-1,000 words. Most high school essays are five paragraphs long with an introductory paragraph, three total body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

College admission essay

This essay should be around 200-650 words long. Along with having a set word limit, these essays should include a look at your motivations and interests.

Undergraduate essay

This essay can be around 1,500-5,000 words long. The content and length depend on the college and program you're entering.

Graduate admission essay

An admission essay should be 500-1,000 words in length. Make sure you include a lengthy personal statement that details your motivations and academic achievements.

Graduate school essay

This extended essay word count is usually around 2,500-6,000 words. The assignment you receive depends on the course you're in. Most graduate-level essays are lengthy and can involve research papers.

IB extended essay

The IB extended essay word count is 4,000 words. This essay is mandatory for every student of the International Baccalaureate program and is based on independent research.
