A market place is a very busy place where people go to buy articles of their needs. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. There is no other place in the area having so much brisk business as the market.

I always find a big crowd there. There are several shops, all decorated beautifully. Big shops look more attractive. Businessmen come here from far and wide for purchasing or selling their products. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, vegetables, etc.

Whenever I visit a market I find the hawkers shouting loudly to sell their goods. They try to attract the people by several names. Generally they sing songs in praise of their goods. They face hard competition because there are several hawkers selling the same article.

As the prices of the items are not fixed, the hawkers as well as the buyers do bargain. I watch these people who feel greatly satisfied after purchasing a thing at a minimum price from the hawkers.

The market is at peak in the evening. There is not a single shop where a big crowd is not seen. Everyone seems to be in hurry. There are jewellery shops which shine brightly in the light. Cloth shops and ready-made garment shops do great business during a festival.

The hotels and restaurants are also crowded with people. Some people are seen with plates of ‘chat’ others are seen enjoying cold drinks. There is flavour of all kinds in the surrounding area. It is very difficult to drive a car in a market place.

What to talk of a car or a motorcycle sometimes it becomes difficult even to walk. On the occasion of festivals like Diwali, Dussehra and Holi the situation becomes worse. It seems all the population of the country is on the road. There is great hustle and bustle. In between the cars and motorcycles, we see those carrying different articles for sale. They create great problems as sometimes they bring the traffic at a halt resulting in loud horns from the car-drivers.

The market is really a very noisy place. One can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another and enjoy fast foods. Some people are seen discussing politics in the light of their business.

Our markets are quite different from the markets of the western advanced countries. Our markets present a rural glimpse and fill us with a feeling that we belong to India whose soul lies in villages. It is really very pleasant to move in a market, particularly in the evening.

I always welcome those moments when I visit the market for this purpose or that. It is a place where one can see the life in so many colours. One can get valuable experiences too by visiting market and buying different commodities.

A market is a place where a large number of people assemble for the act of buying and selling. Nowadays the whole world has become like a huge market. But the idea of market being a place still holds good. In big cities, markets are generally localized and specialized. There are cloth markets, the electronic goods market, motor parts market, fruit and vegetable markets, cattle market and so on.

The main markets in Karachi are Saddar Empress Market, Bohri Bazar, Jama Cloth Market, Khori Garden Hardware Market, Jodhia Bazar, Lee Market and Boulton Market. Some famous shopping centers are Tariq Road, Hydri, Paposh, Clifton, Emporium and Saddar is the biggest Centre. You can buy all kinds of goods, commodities and wares from the shops and multiple stores. It presents a busy scene throughout the day. But in the evenings there is a heavy rush of customers, pedestrians and sight-seers.

Some young people simply come to warm their eyes and rub their shoulders with ladies. One of the unique future of Karachi markets is the presence of large number of ladies in fascinating dresses. Men have to loosen their purses only. During shopping sprees-heavy buying and selling at the time of festivals, the shops are open for twenty-four hours. There are generally more attractions and allurements than the money in your purses.

Eid was drawing near. My brothers and sisters insisted to visit the Saddar market. It was evening time. There were unending lines of buses, mines and cars on the streets. In spite of being ‘no- horns’ area, our ears were deafened by the sounds of horns. There were streams of people on the footpaths and the narrow lanes of Bohri Bazar. People of all ranks high and low, fashionable and ill-clad rubbed their shoulders. Due to heavy traffic, it was rather difficult to cross the roads.

The shops were full of customers. After some jostling and elbowing, I pushed my way into Fashion Garments. Clothes of various designs and sizes were scattered all over the counters and floor. Some Ladies were busy in arguing and haggling: It was all rich men’s show. We finished the buying and picked up the packets and made the payment. Suddenly a gentleman howled. “My purse”, He was relieved by some pick-pocket. He had still to make the payment. Anyhow; he borrowed the money from his friend and saved his face.

Our car was parked far away from the busy scene. We stepped on the road. I had to force my way through an unending line of cars. Some fool spit pan from a car. My trousers were spoiled. I cursed the new upstart. In the rush, my small brother was lost. We searched round. He was found enjoying ice-cream cone at a footpath vendor. The funny slogans of the hawkers attracted the children. It looks about twenty minutes to reach our car. When we reached home, the clock truck nine hours.

In the market, there is a lot of hustle and bustle. People, rich or poor, young or old, come to make purchases. The market presents a miniature image of the whole city. On one side of the market, there are fruit and vegetable shops; on the other side people deal in clothes, utensils, crockery, toys, sweets, cutlery, stationery, etc.  There are also refreshment stalls where people have either cold drinks or cups, of hot tea. People move about to and fro. They haggle and haggle with the shopkeepers to charge reasonable prices. Customers are afraid of pick-pockets. Some persons sell articles on the footpaths, while others in the wooden stalls. A market satisfies the needs of the customers. Ladies can be seen more in number than men because shopping is basically a feminine occupation. Beggars are a painful sight in a market. Stray dogs also meet our eyes. On the whole, a market scene is worth seeing. It provides a glimpse of the people from different backgrounds.

I had heard that a fish market is the noisiest place in the world. But last Saturday, when I visited the local vegetable market, I felt that probably the expression “fish market” contained half-truth only. Perhaps it was the vegetable market which was the noisiest place in the world. I felt that it was like out-Heroding Herod in its own way.

It was not only the noise that was so conspicuous but perhaps the mud, filth, and stench there broke all limits of decency and human tolerance. I wondered the fortuitous stamina of those who worked there and no less of those who went to purchase vegetables from there.

I, however, realized that just as I was compelled by circumstances to go there, others might also be sailing in the same boat of constraint and compulsion.

Actually, as if coincidentally, a horde of rough-mannered, thick-skinned guests descended in our house that day without my prior intimation. All of them had their separate tastes and demands and it was certain that they would create an infernal state in our house if their demands were not met.

I could not depend entirely on my servant. I took him with me and ordered him to carry a few bags with him.

Both my servant and I landed ourselves in the filthy miasma of the place called a vegetable market. We contacted different vendors and rehari wallas. We haggled with them over rates.

Finally, we filled our bags and sacks with carrots, radishes, turnips, peas, cabbages, cauliflowers, green chilies — indeed; whatever we could lay hands on at a reasonable rate. We hired a rickshaw and returned home. We unloaded our luggage in front of our mother and before our shameless guests who just smiled and gesticulated, getting a savage pleasure out of my fate. But I thanked God I hadn’t got an infectious or a skin disease like scabies, eczema, bronchitis, cough, pneumonia, or asthma while slogging through the rotten vegetables.

There are an umpteen number of markets that cater to the daily requirements of the public, and they are placed close to residential areas for the convenience of the customers.

 I had heard a lot about a market called Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi but had never seen it. Once this year, in the month of October, on the occasion of my sister’s marriage, when my mother was going to Chandni Chowk for shopping I insisted that I would also like to accompany her. My mother and even my sister tried their best to dissuade me from going but, I insisted. They even told me that there would be too much crowd and that a child of my size may get suffocated there. However, I heard none of their comments and pleas but insisted on accompanying them. We started on our journey from Vasant Kunj and even when we were just halfway through, my patience gave way as the distance was forbidding. Nothing could be done in the matter now, and I had to keep quiet as I had myself put the suggestion and locked a noose round my neck. After about one and a half hours on the road, we finally reached the much talked of the market – Chandni Chowk – the biggest and oldest market of Delhi.

 What I saw in this market in the first place was a sea of men rushing up and down everywhere on all the roads. It appeared as though all the people were just rushing to some very important mission to and fro on the roads. The sight of the crowd the one of the like I had never seen before just frightened me out of my wits, and, I already started why I opted to come here. As we proceeded to wander towards the shops yes, I was really impressed. There, all yes all items of consumer needs could be seen in plenty but all the shops were just too crowded.

 Since we had gone there for shopping for my sister s marriage we also had to wade through the crowd and do our work. First, we went to a jewellery shop. The sight of that long road full of jewellery shops on both sides of the road took me by surprise. I had never imagined that such an expensive item like jewellery was also available in dozens of shops and, each shop was crowded with customers. I came to know that, this road dotted with shops of jewellery was called Dariba Kalan , and all the shops here were decades old. Here we sat for almost an hour in the shop where Mummy had ordered some items and thus for a while, got some relief from the pushing and jostling on the crowded roads.

After our work here, I was once again a bit fresh and now we moved to saree shops where we had to make bulk purchases for my sister and gifting to friends and relatives Oh my God what a shock awaited me here. So many narrow lanes were emerging from the main road and leading to huge saree shops with stocks of thousands of sarees. Sarees of golden work called zari were just glittering in those tiny shops. Here in these lanes, I think we spent nearly three Hours peeping into one shop and then another, and making selections of sarees. This part of the market was not even visible from the main road but, it appeared to be an of important business center having brisk sales. I was absolutely dazed to see huge stocks piled up in each of these tiny shops. All salesmen in each and every shop were busy catching customers. I noticed that most women would come to a shop, see a few sarees, and just go away, while some others were other making purchases of thousands of rupees. The sale was rather brisk considering that the items bought were far too expensive. Seeing the fast movement of customers in and out of the shops, I asked one of the shopkeepers if this was the situation prevailing every day. This reasoning did convince me to some extent but I still continued to wonder how much crowd there could be daily. This I thought because I am told that this market is forever congested, all the year-round, only becoming unmanageably crowded on occasions like marriages and festivals.

After having bought a lot of sarees, I don’t know how many, we finally got up from the shop to get out – and believe me, we forget our way out, and got lost in those tiny congested lanes and by-lanes. Finally, we had to ask someone to guide us to the main road. Here on the main road we again saw a row of big shops of all kinds of items and all full to the brim. Next, we were told that there are several other markets branching out from this main road of Chandi Chowk. All these other roads specialise in special items and are wholesale dealers. An entire lot of these markets branching off from the main road of Chandni Chowk is altogether called Chandi Chowk. Special shops for clothes, stationery, grains, etc. are offshoots of this main road. Since we had no other work, now we went out to the car, which again was a long walk through a crowd.

 This visit to Chandni Chowk has been my first experience. The wading slowly through thick crowds, the shops full of items of daily consumption, the different markets for different items did impress me. Though it was a tiring day but a wonderful shopping experience. This was my most interesting visit to a market of repute in Delhi.

It was around Diwali. We wanted to buy clothes, Diwali lights, and many other items. Chandni Chowk is famous for such items. My mother asked me to join her and see myself what this famous market is like. My mother and I went to Chandni Chowk. It is near the Red Fort in Old Delhi. There were a lot of crowds. Everyone was pushing each other. There were traffic jams and the vehicles were blowing their horns. Street vendors were selling various items which were very cheap. They were shouting on top of their voice to solicit the customers for their wares. Many customers were bargaining with the shopkeepers. Some poor beggars were asking for food and money. We went to a shop, where my mother bought a saree and a suit for me. She bought some artificial jewelry for me. We also bought some sweets from the famous shop of Ghantewala. From the Electrical Market, we bought Diwali lights and electric iron. I also bought some CDs of famous music albums and a video game for my brother. We were all tired after shopping. We took a cold drink to refresh ourselves. Thereafter we returned home. I enjoyed the shopping very much, although the market was very crowded.

The market situated near my home is the most crowded place of the town. Numerous people come to buy things in this market every day. The woman comes to buy jewelry, sarees, suits, shirts, jeans, fruits and vegetables, whereas the men come to buy ties, caps, pants and shirts.

There are separate shops available for the children’s apparels. Mothers bring their children along with them to buy brand new clothes of their fittings. There is a shop named, ‘Shoe Palace’ that contains great variety of sandals and shoes for the ladies and gents. This shop is adorned with beautiful chandeliers and bouquet of flowers. There are a few fountains overflowing with water inside the premises of the shoe palace. It is not a very expensive shop. The shopkeeper provides shoes at reasonable cost. There is a beautiful pizza but in the market. Here people come to gobble up delightful pizzas. There are many flower shops in which bouquets of flowers are sold. The market is the most enchanting place in our town. Everyone loves to buy things from here.

Markets are the prime local business areas of a town. People flock in to buy things according to their requirements and hence markets have an important role both for buyers and sellers.

Sales are very much effective in markets and it is considered to be a place with fair deals as far a buyer and seller is concerned. Therefore a market would always be crowded with people coming in going out for to meet their needs.

Scene at a crowded market in my locality:

We live in a place named Kadavanthra and there is a big market which is commonly also called as the Kadavanthra Market. It is a huge market and almost all kinds of food related stuff is available there at very good prices. It is situated almost at the most happening junction and hence attracts customers almost all through the day.

Every morning, I do see people flocking in to this market to purchase vegetables and fruits for their daily needs. You could hear bargains happening in very loud noises and in some cases a dispute too. After the early morning rush, the next rush is seen by mid-day, where mostly ladies come to purchase things that are required and again the bargaining deals happen to be much louder than what was heard during the morning hours. Then by evening is when the next major activity happens. This happens regularly and it has almost become a routine for people like us who live nearby.

Apart from the fruit and vegetable stalls in this market which is at the entry, going further inside, you would see the fish and meat markets where almost all the time, business happens. Here the bargains are much louder and the vendors compete with one another when a customer walks in. It is so noisy and messy, the customer just feels like being out at the earliest.

Going through these markets on foot is the best way to get to places and to different vendors for effective purchases. Since it is highly packed and thickly crowded, moving in a vehicle is almost impossible.

Conclusion:

To be in a market does require lots of patience and observation and above all alertness as there are so many kinds of people and vendors and transactions that take place and you should make sure that you are not being duped at any point. I have noticed how sometime people are duped with high charges if not noticed and corrected then and there.

The stillness of the dawn was displaced by the scheduled game of the morning gusts. Pages of newsletters and Kit-Kat wrappers flew around in typhoon-like motions scraping against a banner, which was crucified against a brick- wall using four large black nails, expanded and compressed like a heart, displaying ‘Market Place.’

Looking around all that could be seen was a crowd of people pushing, shoving and shouting. People rushed by, Gathering up items as fast as they could, People often travelled in groups; parents and children or other family members and even friends; They were the ones causing the constant buzz of noises!

The stall owners either served queues of customers or shouted out a range of encouragements to passers-by to attract them with their items. The actions of the stall owners were almost automatic, smiling, picking up the item, packaging, giving it to the customer. The swap between the seller and buyer was extremely quick and hard to follow with the bare eye. The stalls looked on the verge of collapsing due to the weight of all the products.

A girl, dressed in a Mother Fairy costume, abraded the stone floors with her rigid sandals. Refusing to enter the market, she sat down on the frost floors, crossing her legs securely together whilst her mother powerfully yanked her from her shoulder with Stallion force in the direction of the cash machine. She then burst into tears, as she glanced at her ‘magic’ wand; which was seized away by her mother who held it with a firm grip. She then swirled her head, and glanced within the translucent doors of the market opposite of her. To her surprise, the Fairy Queen toy rested against a chair, facing her in the same direction. The girl, oblivious of her mother’s previous lectures about good behavior, stared at the Fairy Queen with mother and daughter affection as she waited for a sign of numbness within her mother’s hands. She broke free, running closer to the divine force which emanated from the Fairy Queen. She hugged her, asking the Fairy Queen whether she could borrow her wand, which pointed diagonally at the ceiling, for a ‘trick’. Automatically presuming the acceptance of the Fairy Queen, she adjusted the wand, pointing it at her mother’s figure in the hope that it will magically cast a freezing spell. Unfortunately, the girl’s spells have failed despite the spirit that summoned within her during the cast of the spell. Her distraught mother then, quite grimly, reclaimed her daughter’s consciousness, with a tight grip and a few sharp words as they slouched towards the fruit-stall.

At the fruit stall, an elderly couple walked from crate to crate, carefully examined every spot on every strawberry and every blemish on every apple. During their rage by outrages and unreasonable prices which were displayed on town cardboard pieces, the man attempted to settle the prices with the stall owner, who was busy serving other customers, ignored the old mans chatter and gave him a smug look. The couple, full of disappointment, looked another way, eager to find a bargain.

Children escaped from the grasp of their parent and ran for freedom. Each child went straight to the toy stalls, desperately wanting sometime new, the joy only lasted a few moments before shattered. Parents worriedly rushed to get their children, apologizing to the stall owner, and then continuing with the bargain hunting!

The sight of a busy market place is just one too see for yourself!

Outside the market, only streamlined cars were parked, with some which waited outside having open roofs as the mild shadowy shine of the sunset subsided. Standing in the shade was a mother and her young boy, both cluttered around in a diameter of shopping bags. The young boy seemed particularly fond of his new spider-man toy, being the only bag he held. He swung its large rectangular box in fast-speed windmill motions – trying to cool his mother with the breeze of the air as they waited in boredom for the taxi.

Shopping centers can be considered as an extension of this idea.

Access to the internet has allowed the creation and prosperity of online markets, as it makes the connection between buyers and sellers from different regions of the world possible. Also, the social and economic trends contribute to the fast development of online markets. Some believe that shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, and online stores have replaced markets. However, we can say that these are the same as markets, but in a different form.

As for me, I do not like markets, as there are always crowds of people and an excess of noise. Each seller invites customers with loud slogans and advertisements about their products. It is understandable, since a market is a place of constant competition. Sellers practically promote the same products, and the main tasks of the seller are to attract, motivate, and keep the customer.

Market prices are not fixed, so salespeople can overstate or understate value. But still, the market is one of the few locations where you can bargain and bring down a price to a level of personal satisfaction.

We can say that the market is a part of a huge mechanism of people management and manipulation. It dictates the prices, constantly increases it, and uses peoples’ innocence and lack of knowledge. Sellers are not your friends, but rather the opposite. They need a market so they can easily sell a bill of goods to you that is not entirely fresh, not of high quality, and not in line with your true personal needs.

Here exists a paradox: we cannot exist without the market, but to live with it is quite problematic. We fall under the influence of advertising, of sellers, of the obnoxious atmosphere of the market itself. It is unfortunate, but the world is an enormous market. Transactions are beneath each interaction we have as individuals and as collective members of society.

But occasionally, when a gentle breeze brushed over it and carried away the crumpled paper scattered on the ground, the street would become lifeless and silent like a graveyard. Once the dispute concluded, both cars meticulously parked between two yellow lines to avoid costly collisions. The era of cars came to a stop, replaced by the busy lifestyle of today. Customers approached the automatic double glass-doors, which slid open to welcome them with a warm breeze from the immersion heaters hidden behind the main doors of the market. A girl dressed as a Mother Fairy walked across the stone floors with her rigid sandals. Despite her mother forcefully pulling her from behind, she refused to enter the market and instead sat on the cold floor, crossing her legs tightly. Her mother, with strong force, dragged her towards the cash machine. Overwhelmed, the girl started crying when she saw that her ‘magic’ wand had been taken away by her mother and firmly held in her hand. Intrigued, she turned her head and looked through the clear doors of the market opposite to her. To her surprise, she saw a Fairy Queen toy sitting on a chair, facing her in the same direction. Ignoring her mother’s earlier lectures on good behavior, she stared at the Fairy Queen with a combination of love and daughterly affection, hoping for a moment when her mother’s grip would loosen. Taking advantage of this opportunity, she broke free and ran closer to the enchanting power that radiated from the Fairy Queen.

She embraced the Fairy Queen and asked if she could borrow her wand, which was angled towards the ceiling, for a magic trick. Assuming that the Fairy Queen would agree, she adjusted the wand and aimed it at her mother, hoping that it would cast a freezing spell. Unfortunately, the girl’s spells failed to work, despite the strong spirit she summoned. Her upset mother then took hold of her, gripping tightly and speaking sternly as they walked towards the fruit stall. At the stall, an older couple walked from crate to crate, meticulously inspecting every strawberry and apple for any imperfections. Outraged by the high prices displayed on slippery flags, the man tried to negotiate with the shopkeeper. However, the shopkeeper ignored his complaints and gave him a smug look while serving other customers. Displeased, the elderly couple turned their attention southward, hoping to find a better deal. South of the fruit shop, children mingled with squirrels nibbling on chocolate. They all gathered around a small artificial fountain that constantly sprinkled dark-brown chocolate. People lined up behind it, captivated by its otherworldly display.

Even the children, surprisingly silent, watched as customers picked their choices from a variety of everyday fruits and cakes. Next in line was a youth with undersized jeans and hair covering his forehead. After hesitating over the options, he skillfully retrieved a one pound coin from his pocket and began selecting his choices. With each choice, he hummed and paused, then the skewer pierced through the fruit and plunged into a pool of chocolate. Ignoring the excited atmosphere created by the children, he examined the chocolate dropping onto the plastic plate and mixed it with the fruit. After eating three choices, he faced his last one – a chocolate-covered pineapple. He took a bite, causing the pineapple juice to spread and moisten his lips.

The man made a sour face and hummed a tune as he sipped the pineapple juice. Once the taste wore off, he headed towards the bustling eastern part of the market, keeping an eye out for friends. He noticed the Fish market entrance, which had a color-changing header. As he walked past it, he saw the ‘Fresh Fish’ stall where spotlights shone on the fish lying on ice. Christmas hollies were used to decorate the ice, perhaps as a tribute. The fishmonger at the stall wore a black and white striped apron with a logo of a smiling fish in the center. He was helping an old lady who wanted fresh salmon. The fishmonger reached into the cold chamber with his bare left hand and randomly picked a salmon. He placed the fish on a rectangular board, which had scratches from previous cuts, showing its history. With a sharp knife in his right hand, he applied pressure with his left hand to mutilate the fish’s body.

The knife sliced horizontally through the scales, revealing the flesh beneath. It then sliced vertically three times. The resulting fleshless pieces were wrapped in paper soaked in sea-water and handed back to the old lady, who stored them under her shoulder. She paid for the fish with three one pound coins and left, walking towards the weighty doors of the eastern exit. Mature individuals held the doors open for people entering and exiting, exchanging pleasantries on humility. Outside the market, streamlined cars were parked, some with open roofs as the sunset’s mild shadowy shine faded. In the shade stood a mother and her young boy, surrounded by shopping bags. The boy clung to his new spider-man toy, swinging its large rectangular box to create a cooling breeze for his bored mother as they waited for a taxi.
