Hatchet Novel Study Unit

Reading & Literacy

Hatchet is a great choice for your students’ literature circle or book club. It is an engaging survival story that captures readers from the early chapters. This no-prep Hatchet Novel Study Unit helps students build comprehension skills through this award-winning survival story by Gary Paulsen without handing them a sheet of questions that just ask them to spit back the text.

I have updated this many times, but it was one of the first novel study units I ever did with my students! The activities fit well in lit circles and book clubs and allow for easy differentiation in a whole group novel study or as a follow-up to a read-aloud. Afterward, you can even do some STEM challenges to give students experience with wilderness survival.

Comprehension skills addressed in this novel study

I carefully selected Hatchet’s trifolds and notebook prompts to align with the text and comprehension skills that often need repeated practice.

The skills in this Hatchet novel study include:

  • Analyzing text quotes, characters, and setting
  • Problem and solution
  • Point of view
  • Cause and effect
  • Making inferences
  • Summarizing
  • Text-dependent writing
  • Vocabulary analysis & context clues
  • Author’s craft – the use of flashback
  • Analysis of character change

Each day focuses on a single comprehension skill. I did this to enable you to dive deep into the skill and ensure your students understand and can apply their knowledge to the text.

Hatchet Novel Study Unit

These prompts encourage higher-level thinking. Students must apply the skill to generate a written response and defend their answers with text evidence.

This analysis of the Hatchet plot enhances understanding and develops applicable comprehension strategies for other texts.

How do readers practice comprehension?

The daily comprehension prompts are provided in two formats. I picked each format to minimize the required copies while still providing materials for student use.

Here are the benefits:

The trifold format was the original design for this novel study.

Each foldable was designed to cover a week’s worth of comprehension using only one piece of paper.

You’ll assign students a one question daily that focuses their reading on the daily comprehension skill.

Hatchet Novel study comprehension questions

The benefit of the trifold format is that it is extremely approachable to students. Each day only takes up a third of the page, keeping reluctant writers from shutting down.

This also makes it easy to collect and grade. Many students use the trifold as a bookmark, helping prevent missing papers.

Click to learn more about the trifold novel study format.

The Reader’s Notebook prompts are ideal for advanced students who require additional space for in-depth analysis or longer written responses.

Furthermore, these prompts encourage advanced readers to provide more detailed answers, stimulating critical thinking and the ability to defend their viewpoints.

Additionally, students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and fine motor issues can also benefit from the notebook prompts. By gluing the prompts onto specialized paper or within a notebook, these students gain extra room to respond, accommodating those with larger handwriting.

Hatchet Novel Study Comprehension Questions

Regardless of the format you pick, the prompt is the same so you can easily have some students working on the trifolds while others use the notebook prompts.

What academic vocabulary is included in the novel study?

The guide for this novel includes over 50 academic vocabulary words.

These include general academic vocabulary and skill-specific vocabulary. Below, you can see a sample of the terms included:

General vocabulary:

  • composition

Skill specific vocabulary:

  • context clue
  • summary and main idea
  • protagonist
  • point of view

Why do you include academic vocabulary?

Academic language, also known as Tier 2 vocabulary, presents a significant obstacle to student success in school.

Moreover, the research on the impact of academic vocabulary is clear, and we must explicitly teach these words to our students.

To make it easy, I outline key Tier 2 words for each skill. By doing so, you can easily include these words in your novel study discussions.

Additionally, it means you can explicitly teach students their meaning if you are working with struggling students or English Language Learners (ELLs).

Many teachers pre-teach this vocabulary to help struggling students start the text on equal footing with their peers.

Text-based vocabulary in Hatchet

In addition, each lesson includes a text-based vocabulary word that can be found within the day’s reading.

Some of the text-based words in this Hatchet guide include:

  • exasperation

These words can be taught using the flipbook format. Designed with copies in mind, this format uses one piece of paper per week.

Hatchet Novel Study vocabulary

The Word of the Day Flip Book is designed for use in reading journals.

To use the flip books, your students cut around the flip book, cut the tabs, and glue it into their notebook. Have students leave the tabs unglued so they can be lifted. This allows students to write under them.

Depending on your students, you can have them write a definition of the day’s word or create a list of synonyms and antonyms.

You can even have students draw a picture of the meaning.

7 Activities for Teaching Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

The novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is awesome to read and teach with upper elementary and middle school students. With the theme of nature, wilderness, animals, insects, and so much more, springtime, as well as autumn, makes the perfect backdrop for this beloved novel. Please come along as we explore 7 activities for teaching Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

7 Activities for Teaching Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Hatchet is a story of a thirteen-year-old boy who gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness after his bush plane goes down. Brian is emotionally reeling from his parent’s recent divorce and contending with surviving with little to no wilderness experience. He faces his own despair and loneliness all while dealing with wild animals and never knowing if he will be rescued.

Paulsen is honest with readers as he takes us on the emotional journey and transformation of Brian. I believe it resonates with middle schoolers so well because Paulsen isn’t afraid to dive into mental turmoil and the deep emotions synonymous with this age level.

To learn more about Gary Paulsen, please watch this video provided through his publisher, Random House Kids.

Hatchet is a novel that both upper elementary and middle schoolers alike enjoy. I have taught Hatchet for over four years now and boys, as well as girls, love it. If you would like to learn more about Gary Paulsen’s life, please see below.

Here are 7 activities or ideas I use with Hatchet :

Activity 1: urban brian vs. wilderness brian.

I love to complete a type of transformation assignment with students. We investigate how Brian’s inner and outer character traits were before the plane crash and how he changes once he’s had to survive on his own. Not only does he become stronger, more confident, more intelligent and wiser, but his physical appearance drastically changes. I have students illustrate Brian before and after l, based on inferencing. We list the various changing character traits of Brian before, during, and after his survival journey. We also discuss urban Brian vs wilderness Brian and how the two are so different.

Activity 2: Setting Truly Shapes a Story

We focus on how the setting shapes a story. Furthermore, we discuss that if Brian’s plane went down in the middle of the Arizona desert, then how would this shift change in the setting shift the novel? The students see how Brian relies heavily on the setting as his source of survival. Last, we investigate what aspects of the setting harm Brian and what aspects help him.

Activity 3: Reading Outside in Nature

We read Hatchet outside. Just this last week, I took my seventh graders outside to read Hatchet and there was just something neat about hearing the birds chirping and feeling the wind rustling as we discussed Brian’s scavenging for berries and encountering a bear. Students encountered crows in our parking lot at the same time and it was a neat way to make real-life connections.

7 Activities for Teaching Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Activity 3: Reading Outside in Nature

Activity 4: Create Their Own Survival Backpacks

At the end of the novel, I assign a culminating project in which the students design their own survival backpacks. Brian had little supplies. His hatchet turned out to be the best resource he had. Students always enjoy this activity as they get to physically gather materials to place into a backpack that would help them survive. I’m always blown away by how creative and innovative they are with this particular project. They think of some amazing ideas!

Activity 5: Research Real-Life Survival Strategies

Hatchet is a great novel to pair with wonderful nonfiction pieces to practice those text features. We read articles about snapping turtles, how to survive a bear encounter, and even a real-life account of a young boy who survived the wilderness on his own. I love the opportunity to learn information about a topic in our novel and have it connect to students in a unique way.

Activity 6: Breaking News: Teenager Missing in Canada

If time isn’t lacking, I have students spend a couple of days on a group project. Students put on a news report that details Brian’s plane crash. During the news report, they “interview” Brian’s parents and police officers, and wildlife officers as well as Terry, Brian’s best friend. They pretend that they are these characters pleading with people to search for Brian. Students create a script and act out a 5-minute news report. This project ends up always being a lot of fun.

Activity 7: Different Types of Conflict

Lastly, we analyze our reading and learn important skills and objectives. We investigate the 5 types of conflict and also learn about the theme as well. If you would like our FREE Hatchet Theme Google Slides Worksheets, please click below.

by Gary Paulsen

Hatchet study guide.

Hatchet, published by Bradbury Press in 1987, is Gary Paulsen 's best-known novel. It is the first of five in the Hatchet series, detailing the events in Brian Robeson's life after he ends up stranded in a forest after the pilot of a bush plane he was flying in has a heart attack and dies mid-flight. Hatchet is a story of survival, resourcefulness, and resilience, and remains a popular novel for young adults nearly 30 years after its publication.

Paulsen's novels often center on nature, and Hatchet is no exception. The majority of the novel takes place in a remote Canadian forest, where Brian makes a camp beside a lake and spends nearly two months trying to survive until he is rescued. The novel caries important themes of respecting and understanding the natural world and the way it functions, and over the course of his two months there Brian truly becomes a part of the natural world around him.

Paulsen considers Hatchet one of his favorite books he has written. He has had many of the experiences that Brian has in the novel: he spent time living in the woods in order to get away from his family and their destructive tendencies.

Hatchet is often taught in school curriculums. It is followed by four other books in Brian's Saga, which all serve different purposes. The River was the next book written, and it follows chronologically from the events of Hatchet. Brian's Winter, on the other hand, envisions an alternate ending to Hatchet, and the final two books, Brian's Return and Brian's Hunt, follow this alternate storyline as well.

Hatchet has received numerous awards, notably the 1987 Newbery Honor medal.

Hatchet - A good survival book for 10+

Age range not appropriate, what's the story.

A city boy is stranded in the Canadian wilderness, equipped with nothing but a hatchet and the clothes on his back. Readers get a riveting view of Brian's struggle to survive for the next two months, forever changing his attitude toward 20-century civilization.

Is It Any Good?

Muscular prose, plus an accurate depiction of the necessities of survival from an author who has lived the details, makes this a riveting, intelligent read. HATCHET has won dozens of awards and appears on many summer-reading lists -- and for good reason. In the end, the book is a fascinating thrill that will keep readers mesmerized to the last page.

Gary Paulsen does not romanticize the difficulties Brian faces. Readers witness his gut-wrenching sickness from eating too many berries and his shock when he realizes he has never before heard total silence. His failures and triumphs are also presented as equal parts of one life-altering experience. In the two months he spends in the wild, Brian undergoes countless emotional and physical changes. But Paulsen keeps the reader at Brian's side as he discovers how strong he has always been.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Brian's failures and triumphs and how they change his attitude and viewpoint.

Do you think you could survive if you were in the same situation?

Is there anything Brian did that you might have done differently?

What was the most terrifying part of his experience, in your opinion?

Hatchet Book Report

Novel: Hatchet Author: Gary Paulsen Lexile Level: 1020 Many have encouraged me to read Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet, finally I decided to give it a try. I’m not a huge fan of reading, however I was told that I would thoroughly enjoy every page of what was described as an “edge of my seat” read.

I love a good book that puts you on edge and makes one feel like he or she absolutely must know the events on the next page. Therefore, how could I turn down a persuasion like that? I had to get a hold of this fictional novel.

We Will Write a Custom Case Study Specifically For You For Only $13.90/page!

Brian Robeson, the main character of the novel, is a thirteen year old boy from New York City. His parents are divorced, and Brian’s recent discovery of his mother’s affair weighs heavily on him. Brian boards a small, two-person plane headed toward the Canadian woods to visit his father.

While flying, Brian receives a quick lecture on how to fly the plane. The pilot experiences some pain in his shoulder, arm, and stomach, but Brian dismisses it as nothing serious. Soon after, the pilot begins to jerk in his seat, he has a heart attack and dies quickly.

Brian is forced to take control of the plane, however he cannot fly it successfully and the plane crashes into a lake in the Canadian woods. Brian survives the crash with minor injuries, however he has no food and little experience in the wilderness.

Brian assumes he will be rescued soon by a search plane, however he is wrong. Brian Robeson is stranded in the woods for fifty-four days. Brian undergoes many hardships, makes many mistakes, but through each mistake learns.

Brian makes his first mistake when he eats some unidentifiable berries he finds that later make him very ill. Brian makes plenty of other mistakes during his fifty-four day stay in the wilderness.

While stranded, a plane flies over Brian giving him a sliver of hope. The plane does not stop, however, and continues on its way leaving Brian devastated. At one point, Brian decides to attempt suicide, he survives his attempted suicide and becomes determined to win this battle with wilderness. A blessing in disguise attacks Brian one night in the Canadian woods.

A tornado blows through the woods and destroys Brian’s shelter.

After the storm, Brian sees that the storm blew up the tail end of the plane. Brian takes a few days to construct a raft in order to reach the wreckage and search for any useful resources. He finds a survival pack that contains multiple useful items including freeze-dried food. He also finds an emergency transmitter and precedes to attempt to use it to be rescued. He believes his attempt was unsuccessful, however soon after Brian is rescued.

This novel certainly had me on the edge of my seat. Every page unveiled a new obstacle that Brian had to overcome in order to survive. It did not take long for Brian to capture my heart and before I knew it as I was reading I was indirectly cheering him on in his battle for survival. I was very intrigued by how much Brian had changed from beginning to end. By the conclusion, Brian had learned to respect and adore every aspect of the wilderness.

An uncanny respect for the wilderness had emerged in Brian throughout his journey.

Even after being rescued, when Brian returned to New York City and his modern-day life, Brian never thought of nature in the same way. Brian develops the ability to be patient and extremely observant. The wilderness had changed Brian forever. While reading the novel I began to develop a new look on nature.

However we cannot begin to grasp what true wilderness is like as long as we live in a modern day city. This book gave me a curiosity, and I almost caught myself wanting to be put into a situation like Brian’s. That soon, however faded simply because I’m still much too independent.
