heaven-teaser

Heaven review: Kind of murder mystery, whose pacing, performances or characterisations cannot be faulted.

Director: Unni Govindraj

Cast: Suraj Venjaramoodu, Sudheesh, Alencier Ley Lopez, Vinaya Prasad

Language: Malayalam / Rating: 2.5/5

A charred human body is found in the middle of a dense forest in Central Kerala, leading to a quick investigation and subsequent arrest of a cop. Cut to the cop’s past and we get a straight-off whodunit that revolves around a homicide case. Directed by debutant Unni Govindraj who has co-written the film along with PS Subramanian, the narrative circles around CI Peter Kurishingal, a somber and upright officer. He is a widower who lives with his mother and adolescent son in a small town in Central Kerala. Peter hasn’t been able to move on after his wife’s death and his relationship with his son is strained.

The narrative builds itself constructively, without fuss, as it shows Peter at work and home. If at home, he is mostly absent emotionally and physically, he is systematic and efficient at work. When a sex worker is swindled by a customer, Peter calmly tells the man to pay up and schools him about consent (though it is made into a needless joke). Peter isn’t the showy, brawny cop one is familiar with on-screen, he is unassuming, gets things done, and is looked on with respect by his co-workers. And it can also be that the character is tailored to suit Suraj Venjaramoodu who slips easily into the role. Having said that, Suraj is unable to bring anything new to the table. Off late whenever he essays the emotional complexities of a character, it is getting a bit too monotonous. It’s there in that subtle reactionary shot when he discovers that his son has been murdered.

When a family is murdered at their home called ‘Heaven’, Peter arrives at the crime scene, only to realise that his life will never be the same again. What follows is a familiar whodunit where the cop who has also lost his son in the homicide, is determined to get to the bottom of the case.

Some of the supporting characters are interesting—the husband-and-wife police couple who assists Peter in the investigation, an ambulance bus driver with a moving backstory, and a junior cop who provides some unexpected humour. Though Peter’s senior lady cop was an interesting casting, her responses to Peter post the homicide and personal tragedy comes across as baffling. But the casting of the main antagonist character as well as the characterisation was lame, therefore making no impact.

In hindsight, it’s the kind of murder mystery, which is structured well and even the pacing, performances or characterisations cannot be faulted. More or less. But somehow the proceedings, the unravelling and the closure all seem too familiar, “already seen” and therefore you watch it all with detachment. And cinematically too, it is played out without surprises and a distracting background score. Heaven would have been a comfortable OTT watch.

Heaven movie review: A clever, chilling setup gets undone by a bloated second half in this slow-burn thriller

Heaven movie review: A clever, chilling setup gets undone by a bloated second half in this slow-burn thriller

Story: Circle inspector Peter Kurishingal is among the sharpest officers; what sets him apart is that he is kind and never judgmental. After the murders of four people that also results in a personal tragedy, Peter carries out a parallel investigation to track the elusive killer and find his motive.

Review: In the past two months alone, Malayalam has had its fair share of investigative thrillers. While some of them like Mammootty’s CBI 5: The Brain relied on nostalgia, the ones that truly caught the attention of the audience were those that had novel plots and intriguing protagonists. These include Jayasurya’s John Luther, Saiju Kurup’s Antakshari and Anoop Menon’s Twenty One Grams. Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Heaven, which is helmed by debutant Unni Govindraj, starts off with promisingly enough – it has a chilling plot that is well set-up to take the audience on a riveting ride and a protagonist, who is emotionally involved in the case that he is investigating.

image_item

The film marks Suraj’s second outing as a cop in the past two months, but there’s nothing similar in the two endeavours except that he is a model police officer who isn’t afraid to take law into his own hands. Unni, who has co-scripted the movie with former cop PS Subramanian, interestingly shapes its character by showing his deftness at handling two cases. This also leads into his personal life, showing how the widower is always too busy for his son – a regret that soon catches up with him after the murder of four people. How Suraj, who is perceived as too emotionally involved in the case to investigate it, finally comes to take charge and the ramifications that follow form the plot.

The first half of the movie is a slow-burner, but it has enough to keep the audience engaged. Gopi Sundar’s background score is haunting and Vinod Illampally’s grey frames add to the ambience. While the first half is interesting with just enough twists and red herrings, the filmmaker loses the grip in the second half by piecing together a puzzle that doesn’t quite fit into how the film was progressing. The moment the killer is revealed and his motives made clear, it almost undoes all the clever work that came before. The final twist too somehow aids in salvaging that, but by then the interest has already waned.

Suraj Venjaramoodu in a still from Heaven

Suraj as the guilt-ridden cop does a decent job in another sombre role and despite a plethora of such serious characters, he succeeds in not making them seem repetitive. This deserves praise as the character only has one range of emotion to play with. The supporting cast of Alencier Ley Lopez, Joy Mathew, Sudev Nair, Jaffer Idukki and Sminu Sijo too don’t stand out, in a good way. Surprise cameo from a young actor, however, doesn’t add much to the plot. Credit must be given to the writers for depicting the police procedures accurately, but this has now become a norm with films such as Kuttavum Shikshayum too ditching the style for rooted-to-reality treatment.

Verdict: Suraj Venjaramoodu’s slow-burn investigative thriller starts off well with an intriguing premise but the makers soon lose grip when they add more twists to the plot, some of which feel too far-fetched to fit into the movie’s theme.

Heaven Movie Review: Suraj Venjaramoodu anchors a decent procedural that could have been better

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

There is an NCC camp happening inside a forest in Kerala. The bus is filled with young people, who are raring to prove a point to the world. A guy and a girl steal furtive glances, and his insecurity wants to make him clarify an important point with his friend sitting next to him. “Is she looking at me or you,” he asks his friend. The friend looks at the girl and breaks the bad news to the guy. “She is looking at me only…” and then we see the friend and the girl go on a long walk in the camp, much to the chagrin of the guy who feels embarrassed and hurt. In the process of this walk, and getting cozy with each other… BAM! There’s a dead body. Now, it is alright to think if the person killed is one of these three. It is also alright to think that one of these three would have a serious bearing on the investigation that would follow. It is also alright to think that these opening scenes would be a Chekov’s Gun. But once the dead body is found by the police, and the investigations happen, we understand that the gun just draws blanks. This is a consistent theme in Suraj Venjaramoodu-fronted cop drama, Heaven . Interesting plot points are established only to fizzle out in the quest for that final act.

Cast: Suraj Venjaramoodu, Alencier Ley Lopez, Vinaya Prasad, Deepak Parambol

Director: Unni Govindaraj

In fact, we are invested in almost everything that happens on screen, but the makers seem to be in a hurry to move on. There are places that needed a bit more finesse, and there are places that needed a bit of mellowing down. Not able to pick the fine line in between proves to be a problem for director Unni Govindaraj.

Heaven begins with that aforementioned murder, and that is when we are first introduced to Suraj’s Peter Kurishingal, who is arrested for the murder. We soon see one other set of murders where Peter Kurishingal is the investigating officer. This dichotomy would have worked better if there were intercutting narratives to see how the past and present unfold. However, once the past narrative begins, we actually forget how the film started. This is also because the flashback portions are where the investigations happen, and it is quite engaging. The way Peter battles his inner demons, swallows his overwhelming sadness, and gets to the bottom of the case is a decent procedural. Peter is aided by his fellow cops like Alencier Ley Lopez as he finds out who facilitated the destruction of the fabric of his close-knit family.

The performances are largely convincing, and the characters played by Jaffer Idukki, Deepak Parambol, Sudheesh, and Vinaya Prasad aid in keeping the investigative drama as taut as possible. Suraj brings quiet dignity to the role of Peter which is a far cry from his other cop roles. The tilt in his walk, and the stiffness that he brings to the table elevate the role from being a one-note character on a revenge spree. The final act springs out of nowhere, but the writing ensures that after an initial few minutes of hesitancy, we buy into that too. This is both the positive and negative of Heaven . We are convinced of watching a decent investigative film, with considerable help from Gopi Sundar’s background score, but time and again, there is a need to reaffirm this faith in the film due to some writing choices.

This isn’t to say Heaven is a bad film, although that title could have definitely remained just a working title. It isn’t to say Heaven is a great film either considering the various instances where even the red herrings don’t feel red enough even at the time of implantation. Heaven is a decent film that could have been either better or worse, and it is to the credit of the team that it stays safely on the better side of things, and not in creative limbo.

Heaven teaser: Suraj Venjaramoodu promises a gripping investigative drama

Suraj venjaramoodu starrer heaven is written and directed by unni govindraj..

heaven malayalam movie review in tamil

The teaser of the upcoming movie Heaven was unveiled on Wednesday. Written and directed by Unni Govindraj, the film stars Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead role.

The teaser gives us a glimpse of an engrossing cop drama about a crime that is not revealed in the teaser. The main thread in the investigation seems to be the footprint of a man. And the footprint also seems to be the only clue for the police to solve the crime. The main subject seems to be a case of murder. But, we also hear Suraj Venjaramoodu explaining to some men that “when a woman says no, it means no”. It could also be a movie about a sexual assault.

Going by the teaser, the mood of Heaven is dark, grim and ominous, something that will appeal to fans of crime stories.

Suraj Venjaramoodu was last seen in Jana Gana Mana, in which he shared screen space with Prithviraj. The socio-political drama was released last month and received positive reviews.

Introduction

The weekend is finally here and so are the new releases although this weekend is a quieter one as compared to the last one. But nevertheless, we will be covering a bunch of new releases so do stay tuned. First up, I decided to watch and review the new Malayalam film Heaven streaming on Hotstar. When it comes to Malaualam thrillers, a few names which pop up instantly are Drishyam and Drishyam 2 which started off in an unassuming manner only to catch you completely off guard in the final act. The bar for thrillers in general is quite high, leave alone the ones from the Malayalam film Industry that even the middling thrillers would not be spared. This is probably more to do with the overkill of the genre wherein every second film these days is a thriller. So there is a bit of redundancy which is lurking around the corner. Having said that, I was backing Heaven mostly because of my love for Malayalam films which do have a certain quality to them. That said does Heaven deliver, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Heaven follows the story of a cop who gets involved in the investigation involving the murder of his son. From the face of it, the story might not seem too novel considering the fact that it is a standard template for a thriller. But the layered screenplay comes to the film’s rescue and wonderfully so. The screenplay at just over 2 hours makes for an intriguing watch straight up. The drama unfolds almost in the form of foreshadowing. So very early on in the film, there is a charred body discovered which sets the ball rolling for the investigation. But the screenplay being layered, does not focus on the investigation at hand and instead takes you to an elongated flashback involving the series of incidents leading up to the current day situation. As a part of the flashback, you are introduced to the protagonist who is considerate, yet would often go out of the way to investigate his cases. As a part of the world building you are also introduced to his family until the tragedy strikes. The drama at this point almost reminds you of the Hindi film Badlapur in terms of its setup. Infact, I did enjoy that the writers did not reveal most of his cards early on. It all contributed to a thriller which was layered and most definitely had that element of mystery to it. The buildup in the drama seems organic where one clue leads you to another thus forming an intriguing and engrossing investigative thriller. To keep your expectations in check, this isn’t a whodunnit as there is no “grand reveal” here. This is more of a thriller filled with twists and turns which is well worth your time. The events leading up to the culprit and the reason provided are really interesting. But the final act most definitely reminded me of Drishyam 2 which is not necessary a bad thing but it definitely seemed rushed to me. It almost gave me an impression that that the writers almost wanted to get the drama done with and so it seemed slightly haphazard too. But overall, the screenplay is layered thus making it a compelling thriller.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are conversational and adequate here. The music and BGM are fairly good although I did feel that the BGM specifically could have been better. The cinematography is pretty good too. The editing was sharp and one reason why I was thoroughly invested in the drama. Director Unni Govindraj does a splendid job in constantly keeping you engaged through his layered storytelling. This was a standard thriller but despite that it was engrossing and one of the main reasons was the direction which just did not drop guard right throughout.

Performances

The performances are really good here. Sudev Nair as Bejoy and Jaffer Idukki(he is just everywhere isn’t he?) as Stephen shine in their respective roles. Reshmi Boban is first rate. Abhija Shivakala is well restrained and does a splendid job. Alencier Ley Lopez as Pillai is fabulous to watch. Deepak Parambol is absolutely terrific with his stoic looks and calm demeanor. His performance is excellent here. Suraj Venjaramoodu is understated and beautifully so. He is that one actor who can convey his emotions through his eyes and the vulnerability which he brings to the table is just excellent to witness.

Heaven is a compelling thriller which will keep you engaged throughout. Available on Hotstar.
