How Mingi Became My Pet Essay

Mingi has short hair and also a glossy coat. It is a female and love to have milk and chicken. Sometimes, I treat it with fish as it loves the taste of tuna. Moreover, Mingi is a very loving pet that stays with me at all times.

Ever since I was little, I liked cats. I love how clean and majestic they are. Although, there were no plans to keep a pet cat. My mother did not allow me as she would end up doing all the work for the pet.

However, she used to keep a bowl of fresh water in our garden to ensure no birds or animals remain thirsty during the summer season. A lot of pigeons and sparrows come to my garden to quench their thirst.

One fine day, a cat came to drink the water. It started coming regularly afterwards and gave birth to kittens in our garden. My mother gave them food as well and some milk every day.

However, one day all of them were gone except for a little kitten. I started to feed it regularly and became close to it. As the mother did not return, I decided to keep it as my pet.

After taking permission from my mother, I finally got to keep Mingi by promising to bear its responsibility. Ever since Mingi has been in my life. It was so little but now has grown into a big and beautiful cat.

A Clean Pet

Cats are one of the cleanest pets that do not require a lot of effort to maintain. I hardly have to worry about Mingi being dirty as it cleans itself regularly. I conduct a bathing session every month with my mother.

It is not easy but Mingi is now used to it. We also comb Mingi’s coat twice a week so no dead hair remains and her hygiene is intact. Moreover, it may sound rare but we also brush Mingi’s teeth every week.

During winters , Mingi gets cold so we have got her a warm coat to protect her from the cold. Mingi remains indoors mostly and never dirties our house. Ever since it was little, she knew where to relieve herself so she’s always been low maintenance and love.

Conclusion Of My Pet Essay

All in all, Mingi has been a blessing that happened by chance. However, she is now an inseparable part of my life. I love spending time with her and she manages to make my saddest days happier.

100 Words Essay On My Pet

I have a pet dog who is very beautiful. I named him Tommy. He has been with us for the last nine months. He is black in colour and has a bushy tail. He runs very fast, especially when he is chasing cats. Tommy is healthy and playful. I always give him healthy food like meat, egg, fish, bread, rice, etc. When I come back from school, he wags his tail with joy and licks my face. Tommy knows everybody in my family and he barks when he sees a new person, but does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent and he has become an important part of my family now.

My Pet Essay

200 Words Essay On My Pet

Keeping a pet was the best decision of my life. I have owned many types of home pets, like fish and tortoises. I love taking care of them. Fish and pets are considered very auspicious. They bring good fortune and good luck. Fishes are perfect pets for those who don’t have time, as they don’t require any training or grooming. Fishes are easy to care for as they shed no hair and require low maintenance. I have a goldfish. Her fascinating colour grabs much of my attention. I adore feeding her because when I do so, she jumps in the aquarium to grab it.

My tortoise, on the other hand, is very quiet and cute. He plays with logs, dirt mounds, and rocks. He eats cabbage, beans, sweet potatoes, and earthworms. Tortoise drinks water in the most simple yet fantastic way. He outstretches his neck, lowers his head, and places their nose at the bottom of the bowl. I always try my best to give them a happy and healthy environment. I devote a good time to their supervision. I like taking care of them whenever I can and when I’m feeling upset about something, I have a habit of talking to them about troubles after which I always feel better.

500 Words Essay On My Pet

Cats are the cutest pet I have ever seen. I got my cat as a gift from my grandmother. She gave me the cat on my 16th birthday. I was so excited and happy to see her for the first time. My grandmother carried her in a beautiful bamboo basket decorated with many ribbons and flowers. Her cute little eyes, mesmerizing purr, and white fur made me fall in love with her. I love spending time with her.I named her Sparkles because of her beautiful eyes. The way she drinks milk by licking her tongue in the bowl intrigues me.

Every morning I play with her to make sure she stays physically and mentally active. She loves to play with Teddy bears and balls. Her favourite toy is a yellow sponge ball. She loves to throw it around. I sometimes sit still and observe her. She is very friendly. I love to click pictures and selfies with her. Cats are easy to keep. Cats are magical, and many believe that they bring good luck. My cat has been a lucky charm for me.

Food For My Pet

Pets come with many responsibilities and duties. I admire Sparkles the most, but there are many aspects of her life where I have to take my mom's help. My mom looks after the food for my cat. She always conducts a good amount of research about her diet before buying food for her. She takes good care of her diet, which contains all the required vitamins and minerals. As meat is one of the cats' favourite food, I always make sure to bring meat for her. Liver, cooked egg, meat, and chicken are suitable for cats.

Cats are carnivorous, but they can eat some veggies. Cats can eat bread, bananas, and blueberries. Cats also enjoy dairy products such as yogurt and cheese. Cats love to sip milk. Many food items such as grapes, onion, garlic, and chocolates are poisonous for cats.

Safety Tips For Pet Cat

We need to take good care of our pets diligently. If a pet has a thick coat of fur, then they need to be taken for a regular haircut to keep them clean and comfortable. We need to keep our pets away from fireworks, as burns and injuries can be fatal and the sounds scare them away.

We also should be mindful about keeping away the food we eat as most of our food can be harmful to their health. Garbage bins should be kept out of the reach of pets. Their nails have to be cut and trimmed properly so they don't hurt themselves or anyone else and they have to be updated with all their vaccinations as it is good for their health. Human beings are also safe with pets if they are vaccinated.

Advantages Of Having A Pet

Pets are sensible and helpful creatures. They support and boost our mental health. Pets have also proven to help us with depression by giving us companionship. Regular walking with pets can help in keeping blood pressure and keep our cholesterol low. Pets bring positive energy into the house, and they also energize you. 250 Words Essay on Having a Pet

The companionship of pets.

Pets have long been regarded as man’s best friend, providing companionship, loyalty, and emotional support. They are not just animals, but rather an integral part of our lives, enriching our experiences and teaching us about empathy, responsibility, and unconditional love.

Psychological Benefits

Research has indicated that having a pet can significantly reduce stress levels and improve mental health. The simple act of petting an animal can trigger the release of endorphins, creating a sense of calm and happiness. Furthermore, pets can alleviate feelings of loneliness, providing a sense of purpose and companionship.

Physical Health and Well-being

Pets, particularly dogs, require regular exercise, which inadvertently encourages their owners to lead more active lifestyles. This can result in improved cardiovascular health, reduced obesity rates, and overall better physical health.

Teaching Responsibility and Empathy

Having a pet is a long-term commitment that requires responsibility. Feeding, grooming, and caring for a pet can teach individuals, especially young adults, about responsibility. Moreover, pets can help develop empathy as we learn to understand and cater to their needs.

In essence, having a pet is a rewarding experience that offers numerous benefits. It is a relationship that goes beyond the physical realm, touching upon emotional and psychological aspects. Despite the challenges and responsibilities that come with pet ownership, the invaluable lessons and companionship they offer make it a worthwhile endeavor.

500 Words Essay on Having a Pet

The joy and responsibility of having a pet.

Pets, in many ways, can be considered as an extension of our family. They provide companionship, emotional support, and can even contribute to improved physical health. However, owning a pet also comes with significant responsibilities and potential challenges.

The Psychological Benefits of Pet Ownership

The psychological benefits of having a pet are well-documented. Research indicates that pets can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Their constant companionship can alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. For instance, the act of petting a dog or a cat has been shown to release oxytocin, a hormone associated with stress reduction and mood enhancement.

Physical Health Advantages

Beyond mental health, pets also contribute to physical health. Regular walks with a dog, for example, promote cardiovascular health and fitness. Pets can also help their owners maintain a regular sleep schedule, as they typically require feeding, exercise, and bathroom breaks at consistent times.

Life Skills Acquired

Owning a pet can also impart valuable life skills, particularly for young adults. The responsibility of caring for another living being can foster empathy, compassion, and responsibility. It also provides an opportunity to learn about the cycle of life and death, helping to develop emotional resilience.

The Challenges of Pet Ownership

Despite these benefits, pet ownership is not without its challenges. The financial costs can be significant, encompassing food, veterinary care, grooming, and potential property damage. Pets also require time and attention, which can be difficult for busy individuals or families. Moreover, pets can limit spontaneity, as their needs often require planning and cannot be easily delegated.

Choosing the Right Pet

Choosing the right pet is a crucial step in ensuring a positive pet ownership experience. This decision should be based on lifestyle, living situation, financial capability, and personal preference. For example, a dog may be a poor choice for someone with a busy schedule or limited living space, while a cat or a fish may be a more suitable option.

In conclusion, owning a pet can be a rewarding experience, offering numerous psychological and physical health benefits. However, it is not a decision to be taken lightly, as pets require significant time, attention, and financial resources. Prospective pet owners should carefully consider their lifestyle and capabilities before welcoming a pet into their home. Ultimately, the joy and companionship pets offer can greatly enrich our lives, making the challenges worthwhile.

My Pet Dog Essay – 200 words

My pet dog is a pug. It is fawn in colour and has a small built. We have named it Swigi. It has been with us since the last 2 years. I still remember the day me and my sister went to the pet shop with my father to bring it home. I somehow wanted to pet a cat but my elder sister, Riya is almost crazy about dogs and was adamant that we get a dog as a pet. Other members of my family also believed that keeping a dog as a pet was a better choice and so a cute little one month old pug came home with us that day and became a part of our family.

Though everyone in the family takes care of Swigi, my sister is especially particular about its cleanliness, vaccinations and eating habits. We make Swigi bath twice a week. It is actually my favourite time of the week. We take it to the terrace and bathe him with a pipe. We make sure it gets its food on time and goes for stroll twice every day. Swigi also accompanies us everywhere we go.

Swigi is quite an active dog and loves playing with ball. It is super fun playing with it.

My Pet Dog Essay – 300 words

My pet dog, Barney is a Labrador. It is light brown in colour and has a strong built. Having a Labrador as a pet serves a double purpose. You do not only get a great friend who is always ready to play with you but it also acts as a security guard for your home. Our home is a more secure place because of the presence of Barney.

Participation in Dog Show

Many people bring home pets and forget about them. We aren’t among those. We take good care of Barney and always love involving it in different activities. It has been with us since the last 5 years and we have made it participate in three dog shows since then. We got it trained for these shows and it made us proud by winning prizes in all these events. At the time of the first event, Barney was just 10 months old. It was hyper active and won the hurdle race. During the second event, it was 2 years old won the bird hunt game. In the third event, it again participated in a race and came third. Barney was 4 years old then.

My Pet Dog is Very Vigilant

Barney remains vigilant all the time. It barks at the sound of any hustle near the home especially at night. It has a strong smelling sense and grows suspicious if it experiences any strange or unfamiliar smell. Dogs are extremely faithful and want nothing but the best for their masters. Barney is no exception. It is very protective about our family and thus guards our house at all times.

I love spending time with Barney. It makes me forget all my tensions and worries. It stands near the front door waiting for me when it is time for me to come home from school and wags its tail as soon as it sees me. We are both extremely delighted to see each other.

My Pet Dog Essay – 400 words

I have an adorable Dachshund as my pet. It is an extremely lively dog and always keeps us on toes whenever we are out to play with it. We have named it Buddy and it indeed is our best Buddy. Dachshunds are very friendly and cheerful. Buddy has gelled along extremely well with our family and loves all of us dearly. We also love it with all our heart.

My Pet Dog’s Features

With their long and low bodies, Dachshunds look quite different from the other breeds of dogs. Here is how my Buddy looks like and behaves:

  • Buddy is chocolate brown in colour and is long haired.
  • It is a miniature sized Dachshund.
  • It has a very strong smelling power.
  • It has a very pleasant and friendly disposition. It befriends all our friends, neighbours and relatives who come home and is eager to play with them.
  • It is also very brave and clever. It always remains cautious about who roams around in the street next to our house and barks at any suspicious or unfamiliar person around.
  • It is also very curious about things.
  • It is Fun Playing with Buddy

Dachshunds are hyper active and always keen on playing different games. Buddy particularly loves playing with the ball. So every evening we take it out for around half an hour and indulge him in this activity. It is not only fun for Buddy but an extremely amazing experience for me and my brother too.

Buddy also loves travelling. We often go for weekend outings and Buddy is always super excited to go along with us. Since it is small in size, it is not a hassle to take it along. It does not even require much food which makes it quite travel-friendly.

It has been a year that we have brought him home and our friends and cousins have started visiting us all the more since then. A cheerful soul that it is, everyone is fond of it and wants to spend time with it.

We mostly keep it tied with a chain when it is home. My mother particularly makes it a point that Buddy is tied with its chain near the balcony. This is because the moment we untie it, it runs around the house breaking every single thing that comes its way.

Pet dogs are fun to be around and especially if it is a Dachshund, you can never get bored. Each day seems exciting and fun in its company. Buddy is the lifeline of our family.

My Pet Dog Essay – 500 words

When I was young, we had a Doberman as a pet. It became a part of my family even before I was born. So, I knew him from the time I was born. Doberman have a strong sixth sense and always remain vigilant. However, you can see their soft side when they are in the company of little kids and I have experienced this side of my pet Doberman whom we lovingly called, Bruno.

Why My Parents Decided to Pet a Dog?

My parents shifted to Goa soon after their marriage. They found a house on rent. It was a beautiful house that was well-suited for a family of two. However, the only problem was that the house stood aloof. It was at a distance from the other houses in the vicinity. In order to ensure the safety and security of my mother as my father went to the office, it was decided to bring home a pet dog. They decided to go for a Doberman as it is a fearless, brave and sturdy dog. Owing to this nature, Doberman dogs are also preferred in police and military services all around the world.

My mother was already fond of dogs and Bruno became her best friend in the new city. Since, Doberman require exercise every day, she took it for walk twice every day. My dad also enjoyed its company. Bruno grew extremely fond of me as soon as I was born and guarded me all the time. It also played with me.

Why We Had to Give Away Our Doberman?

I was extremely attached to Bruno and so was my mother. However, we had to give it away as my father got a good job opportunity in the United States and we had to shift there for two years. With heavy heart, we gave him to one of our neighbours who gladly took it home. We often called them up to ask for Bruno’s well being.

How I Found An Indian Spitz?

We shifted back to India after two years however, this time to a different city. I wanted to keep a pet dog again but my mother was not keen on it. However, it seemed like God heard my wish and fulfilled it.

One day when I was walking back home from school, I saw a Spitz struggling to get its leg out of a cycle tyre. I immediately went to help it. It was someone’s pet but seemed like it had lost its way. I helped it get rid of the tyre and gave a pat on its head. Spitzs are known to be quite affectionate. It began licking my arm. I looked around for its master but could not find anyone. As I began walking home, it started following me. I kept taking it back to the place I had found it for weeks in the hope to find its master but did not find anyone. Since then, it stays with us. I have named it Jiggles.

Dogs are very loving and caring. They shower love and are faithful to their masters. It is an amazing feeling to have a dog as a pet.

My Pet Dog Essay – 600 words

I have a pet dog named Roger. It is a German shepherd and it has been a part of my family since the last 3 years. It is very warm, friendly and playful. However, outsiders often find it dangerous. This is because of its built and colour. It is vigilant and guards our house all the time.

Why I wanted to keep a Pet Dog?

Everyone in my family is fond of Roger. We all treat him like a family member. We cannot imagine life without him. However, I still remember the time when I wanted to keep a pet dog and all my family members were against the idea. I was 8 years old that time and my friend, Aanya owned a very cute little pug. She always brought it to the park. Whenever I visited her place, I saw her playing with it. Both of them looked so happy and loved each other’s company. Many a times, I called Aanya to play with me at my home but she refused saying she was busy feeding or bathing Roger. I felt really bad and wished that I too had a dog as a company. It is then that I decided to bring home a pet dog.

How I struggled to get My Pet Dog?

I knew I wanted a dog as a pet but I wasn’t aware that it would be such a struggle for me to convince my parents to get one home. As soon as, the thought of keeping a pet dog came into my mind, I rushed to my mom and told her that I want to get one home. My mother just laughed and dismissed my request with a pat on my cheek. I repeated my wish and she again took it lightly. This infuriated me and I told her that I really wanted a pet. It was then that my mother realized that I was serious about it. So she made me sit and explained as to why we could not keep a pet.

Both my parents are working. Though my grandparents live with us, they are old and taking care of a pet would have been too much to ask from them. Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.

Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.

Roger won everyone’s Heart

Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My mother who detested the idea of bringing a pet home also found it cute and grew fond of it over the time. Dogs love babies and are very protective about them. Roger and my younger brother thus became friends almost instantly. Super excited about including Roger in the family, I told all my friends about it the same day.

Roger has become an inseparable part of our lives today and I just love it. Dogs are really adorable. I feel that everyone should keep a pet dog.

Opinion Writing: The Best Pet

My class has been busy writing opinions on which animal makes the best pet.    When you begin your opinion writing unit, you need to start with teaching them what it is.  First, I like to read lots of books to my students so they get lots of ideas on a topic and an opinion is.  Next, I will show them a video. Then we do lots of brainstorming together and I model many times.

Here are some great videos I like to use to introduce opinion writing to my class.

Videos for Opinion Writing

Write an Opinion! by Kristen McCurry is a great book to introduce opinion writing.  Another great book to read to your class is Stella Writes an Opinion by Janiel Wagstaff. I was lucky to meet this amazing author at a conference.  I put a list of many books that work well with writing an opinion at the end of this post.

We continue reading other books for ideas on what makes a good pet.  After brainstorming ideas, my students fill in their graphic organizers and begin their rough draft.  Click on the picture below for your free copy of the graphic organizer and writing paper.

My students love this fitness activity!  They try to guess the pet and complete the exercise.  It isn’t as easy as you would think to guess the pet.  It is a fun and engaging brain break for students.  There are two versions of this activity.  It is a fun way to end the day after writing about your favorite pet.

I have included links to my favorite mentor texts to use when teaching opinion writing unit of study. (contains affiliate links)

Cats make fantastic pets, but you may not realize how great they can be if you’ve never owned one. Of course, you’ve likely heard from the cat owners in your life how awesome their kitties are, but don’t just take their word for it. Read on to find 16 reasons cats are great pets, including seven backed by science!

  • The 16 Reasons Why Cats Make Good Pets
  • 1. They Make Great Apartment Pets

While other species can live in apartments, cats are best suited for apartment living. They’re perfectly sized for small spaces, and because they use a litter box, they don’t need a yard to go to the bathroom.

Dogs often need a lot of space to run around to burn off excess energy and a yard to do their business. Birds can be loud and disruptive to your neighbors. Certain reptiles can grow far too big to be housed comfortably in an apartment, and if your snake is an escape artist, you’ll have a big problem on your hands.

  • 2. They’re Great Hunters

Your cat’s ancestors lived to hunt, and they were pretty good at it. Though your kitty doesn’t have to hunt to feed themselves, their predator skills will be useful. Creepy crawlies like spiders and pests like mice don’t stand a chance when a cat is guarding your property.

  • 3. They’ll Make You Smarter

Studies show that self-proclaimed cat people score higher on intelligence tests than their dog-loving counterparts. The same study also suggests that cat people are generally more introverted, open-minded, and sensitive. 1

  • 4. They Are Independent Companions

One of the most appreciated aspects of cat ownership is how cats are generally more self-sufficient. They don’t need to be taken out for walks or played with for hours daily to keep them happy and well-behaved. Dogs, especially larger breeds, need much outdoor time to burn off excess energy and keep boredom at bay. However, cats do still need play sessions and social interactions, but in a different way than dogs.

Kittens are much easier to raise than puppies, too. Caring for a puppy is like caring for a newborn. It’s rewarding, but it requires more work and constant supervision.

  • 5. They’re Generally More Affordable to Care For

Generally speaking, cat ownership is more affordable than dog ownership. Dog owners must often invest in grooming and training sessions, plus feeding a 45-pound dog is more expensive than feeding a cat a quarter of that size.

  • 6. They’re Quiet

Unlike dogs and birds, cats keep pretty quiet most of the time. The exception to this rule is when they’re hungry for food or your attention. Still, your neighbors are less likely to hear your cat meowing than they are a dog barking or parrot squawking.

  • 7. They’re Independent

Ask anyone that has owned cats for any period of time in the past, and they’ll tell you that cats often march to the beat of their own drum. They’re capable of entertaining themselves part of the time, and most don’t particularly care for constant attention.

  • 8. They Have Long Lifespans

The most difficult part of being a pet owner is saying goodbye. Thankfully, cats have relatively long lifespans, meaning you’ll spend more years with them, creating precious memories. Some cats can live up to 18 years, with some living even longer!

  • 9. They Can Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease

Studies show  that owning a cat can lower your stress levels, reducing your risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death worldwide.

  • 10. They Can Protect Your Children Against Allergies & Asthma

Research suggests that early childhood exposure to cats can have a positive impact on the development of allergies and asthma later in life.

A study looking at over 700 newborns found that after 18 years, the babies that were exposed to indoor cats during their first 12 months had half the risk  of developing a cat allergy later in their lives.

  • 11. They Can Boost Mental Health

Research suggests that cats provide a calming presence in the home and may assist owners struggling with mental health challenges. One study  shows cat owners have better psychological health than those without pets. Cat owners claim to be happier, more confident, and less nervous. They can also sleep, focus, and face problems better than people without pets.

  • 12. They’re Entertaining

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to witness a cat with the case of the “zoomies,” you know just how entertaining they are to watch. Zoomies are when cats suddenly start zipping around the house frantically for no apparent reason. It’s as if a switch has been flipped; they run around maniacally for a few moments, then the switch is flicked again, and the zoomies stop as quickly as they started.

It’s believed that cats run around the house when they get an intense burst of energy, as it’s an easy way to release that pent-up energy.

  • 13. Their Purrs Are Therapeutic

Not only is the sound of a cat purring adorable, but it’s actually very soothing and therapeutic.

A cat’s purr typically falls between 25 and 150 Hertz. Research suggests  that sound frequencies in this range may improve bone density and promote healing. Scientists use such frequencies in vibrational therapies to promote tissue regeneration.

While your cat’s purr may not heal your broken bones, there’s no denying the stress-relieving benefits of having your cat purr on you.

  • 14. They May Be Better for the Environment

Dogs are larger animals that need to eat much more food than your 10-pound cat. According to some estimates, owning a medium-sized dog can create a similar carbon footprint to owning a large SUV because of the land, water, and energy resources necessary to develop the food a pet of that size would eat. Since cats eat less food, owning one will create less of a carbon footprint.

  • 15. They Form Strong Bonds With Their Owners

Many people think of cats as stubborn and aloof creatures, and while that can be true of some individual cats, this isn’t always the case. Cats bond with their owners as their caregivers and create secure attachments with their humans. Your cat depends on you to feel safe when they’re feeling nervous or stressed out.

  • 16. They May Know What You’re Feeling

Research from 2015  suggests that cats behave differently when their owners smile than when they’re frowning. When their humans smiled, cats were likelier to exhibit positive behaviors, such as purring or rubbing up against their owners . Cats are highly intelligent and observant, so it’s not far-fetched to believe that they’re intuitive using the emotional cues from their humans.

  • Final Thoughts

Cats make lovely companions for countless reasons; the ones we delved deeper into above are just starting to scratch the surface. Cats are fantastic, not only because of their stress-relieving, asthma-reducing, or laughing-inducing behaviors but because of the beautiful relationships we form with them.

Cats Make the Perfect Pet Essay Example

“The only, absolute and best friend that a man has, in this selfish world, the only one that will not betray or deny him, is his DOG.” 1789 King Fredrick of Prussia. Or some people might just think a man's best friend is his dog. But you never really hear anything like this about cats. That’s because most people will prefer dogs over cats. Dogs just have a better reputation than cats. But I don’t totally have the same mind on that. This is why I believe cats make much better pets than dogs.

Cats are way easier to maintain than dogs. Cats will clean themselves meaning the owner doesn’t need to. This can save a lot of time for the owner. Dogs on the other hand need to be cleaned by someone. And bathing a dog usually takes an hour or more. Also, cats do not need to be trained to go to the bathroom. Training an animal to potty can take a very long time. With cats, you don’t need to train them to go to the bathroom. Just show them their litter box and you're good. But dogs are much different. I’m sure if you have had a dog, you definitely have needed to clean up a few messes. This is why cats are easier to maintain than dogs.

Cats are much more affordable than dogs. Let’s take a look at a cat's yearly cost. $809.00. Seems like a lot until you look at a dog's yearly cost. Anywhere from $1,500- 9,900! That is much more than a cat's yearly cost. Now, let's look at it from a lifetime point of view. Around 12,500 for cats and an insane 20,000 or more for dogs! Another reason is dogs have a tendency to destroy their toys. This means you will have to constantly buy them more toys adding to the already expensive cost of a dog. Therefore, cats are more affordable than dogs.

Some people might say dogs are more loyal than cats. But, according to new research, cats are just as loyal as dogs. The researchers did a test where they put a cat and an owner in an unfamiliar room for two minutes. Then, the owner left the room for two minutes. 63% of the cats show signs of secure attachment. This is when an animal or person feels stressed because their caregiver, or in this case owner, leaves. Once the two minutes were up, the owner returned and the cats became more calm. This proves cats are loyal to their owners. Just because it may seem like a cat isn’t loyal does not mean they aren’t.

This is why I believe cats are better than dogs. They are easier to maintain and are much more affordable. So next time you are looking for a pet, consider a cat.

The Problem With Saying ‘Sex Assigned at Birth’

A black and white photo of newborns in bassinets in the hospital.

By Alex Byrne and Carole K. Hooven

Mr. Byrne is a philosopher and the author of “Trouble With Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions.” Ms. Hooven is an evolutionary biologist and the author of “T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone That Dominates and Divides Us.”

As you may have noticed, “sex” is out, and “sex assigned at birth” is in. Instead of asking for a person’s sex, some medical and camp forms these days ask for “sex assigned at birth” or “assigned sex” (often in addition to gender identity). The American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association endorse this terminology; its use has also exploded in academic articles. The Cleveland Clinic’s online glossary of diseases and conditions tells us that the “inability to achieve or maintain an erection” is a symptom of sexual dysfunction, not in “males,” but in “people assigned male at birth.”

This trend began around a decade ago, part of an increasing emphasis in society on emotional comfort and insulation from offense — what some have called “ safetyism .” “Sex” is now often seen as a biased or insensitive word because it may fail to reflect how people identify themselves. One reason for the adoption of “assigned sex,” therefore, is that it supplies respectful euphemisms, softening what to some nonbinary and transgender people, among others, can feel like a harsh biological reality. Saying that someone was “assigned female at birth” is taken to be an indirect and more polite way of communicating that the person is biologically female. The terminology can also function to signal solidarity with trans and nonbinary people, as well as convey the radical idea that our traditional understanding of sex is outdated.

The shift to “sex assigned at birth” may be well intentioned, but it is not progress. We are not against politeness or expressions of solidarity, but “sex assigned at birth” can confuse people and creates doubt about a biological fact when there shouldn’t be any. Nor is the phrase called for because our traditional understanding of sex needs correcting — it doesn’t.

This matters because sex matters. Sex is a fundamental biological feature with significant consequences for our species, so there are costs to encouraging misconceptions about it.

Sex matters for health, safety and social policy and interacts in complicated ways with culture. Women are nearly twice as likely as men to experience harmful side effects from drugs, a problem that may be ameliorated by reducing drug doses for females. Males, meanwhile, are more likely to die from Covid-19 and cancer, and commit the vast majority of homicides and sexual assaults . We aren’t suggesting that “assigned sex” will increase the death toll. However, terminology about important matters should be as clear as possible.

More generally, the interaction between sex and human culture is crucial to understanding psychological and physical differences between boys and girls, men and women. We cannot have such understanding unless we know what sex is, which means having the linguistic tools necessary to discuss it. The Associated Press cautions journalists that describing women as “female” may be objectionable because “it can be seen as emphasizing biology,” but sometimes biology is highly relevant. The heated debate about transgender women participating in female sports is an example ; whatever view one takes on the matter, biologically driven athletic differences between the sexes are real.

When influential organizations and individuals promote “sex assigned at birth,” they are encouraging a culture in which citizens can be shamed for using words like “sex,” “male” and “female” that are familiar to everyone in society, as well as necessary to discuss the implications of sex. This is not the usual kind of censoriousness, which discourages the public endorsement of certain opinions. It is more subtle, repressing the very vocabulary needed to discuss the opinions in the first place.

A proponent of the new language may object, arguing that sex is not being avoided, but merely addressed and described with greater empathy. The introduction of euphemisms to ease uncomfortable associations with old words happens all the time — for instance “plus sized” as a replacement for “overweight.” Admittedly, the effects may be short-lived , because euphemisms themselves often become offensive, and indeed “larger-bodied” is now often preferred to “plus sized.” But what’s the harm? No one gets confused, and the euphemisms allow us to express extra sensitivity. Some see “sex assigned at birth” in the same positive light: It’s a way of talking about sex that is gender-affirming and inclusive .

The problem is that “sex assigned at birth”— unlike “larger-bodied”— is very misleading. Saying that someone was “assigned female at birth” suggests that the person’s sex is at best a matter of educated guesswork. “Assigned” can connote arbitrariness — as in “assigned classroom seating” — and so “sex assigned at birth” can also suggest that there is no objective reality behind “male” and “female,” no biological categories to which the words refer.

Contrary to what we might assume, avoiding “sex” doesn’t serve the cause of inclusivity: not speaking plainly about males and females is patronizing. We sometimes sugarcoat the biological facts for children, but competent adults deserve straight talk. Nor are circumlocutions needed to secure personal protections and rights, including transgender rights. In the Supreme Court’s Bostock v. Clayton County decision in 2020, which outlawed workplace discrimination against gay and transgender people, Justice Neil Gorsuch used “sex,” not “sex assigned at birth.”

A more radical proponent of “assigned sex” will object that the very idea of sex as a biological fact is suspect. According to this view — associated with the French philosopher Michel Foucault and, more recently, the American philosopher Judith Butler — sex is somehow a cultural production, the result of labeling babies male or female. “Sex assigned at birth” should therefore be preferred over “sex,” not because it is more polite, but because it is more accurate.

This position tacitly assumes that humans are exempt from the natural order. If only! Alas, we are animals. Sexed organisms were present on Earth at least a billion years ago, and males and females would have been around even if humans had never evolved. Sex is not in any sense the result of linguistic ceremonies in the delivery room or other cultural practices. Lonesome George, the long-lived Galápagos giant tortoise , was male. He was not assigned male at birth — or rather, in George’s case, at hatching. A baby abandoned at birth may not have been assigned male or female by anyone, yet the baby still has a sex. Despite the confusion sown by some scholars, we can be confident that the sex binary is not a human invention.

Another downside of “assigned sex” is that it biases the conversation away from established biological facts and infuses it with a sociopolitical agenda, which only serves to intensify social and political divisions. We need shared language that can help us clearly state opinions and develop the best policies on medical, social and legal issues. That shared language is the starting point for mutual understanding and democratic deliberation, even if strong disagreement remains.

What can be done? The ascendance of “sex assigned at birth” is not an example of unhurried and organic linguistic change. As recently as 2012 The New York Times reported on the new fashion for gender-reveal parties, “during which expectant parents share the moment they discover their baby’s sex.” In the intervening decade, sex has gone from being “discovered” to “assigned” because so many authorities insisted on the new usage. In the face of organic change, resistance is usually futile. Fortunately, a trend that is imposed top-down is often easier to reverse.

Admittedly, no one individual, or even a small group, can turn the lumbering ship of English around. But if professional organizations change their style guides and glossaries, we can expect that their members will largely follow suit. And organizations in turn respond to lobbying from their members. Journalists, medical professionals, academics and others have the collective power to restore language that more faithfully reflects reality. We will have to wait for them to do that.

Meanwhile, we can each apply Strunk and White’s famous advice in “The Elements of Style” to “sex assigned at birth”: omit needless words.

Alex Byrne is a professor of philosophy at M.I.T. and the author of “Trouble With Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions.” Carole K. Hooven is an evolutionary biologist, a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, an associate in the Harvard psychology department, and the author of “T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone That Dominates and Divides Us.”
