PhD Programme

Training young scientists is one of the core missions of the IMP. In 1993, the IMP co-founded an international PhD programme in molecular life sciences with the University of Vienna. Today, the "Vienna BioCenter PhD Program" is one of the most prestigious international PhD programmes in biology.

phd program vienna

"Empowering curious researchers" is the motto of the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program, the programme that enables students to do research for their PhD at an IMP lab. The main priorities of this programme are the effective mentoring of PhD students and ensuring that all candidates have the support and resources they need to develop their projects.

The selection for the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program is very competitive and successful candidates are rewarded with ample resources. PhD students at the IMP enjoy access to outstanding facilities and scientific services, opportunities to do any experiment useful to support their work and a pleasant work atmosphere in a modern building. All this is offered in the frame of a training programme that has become one of Europe’s most distinguished PhD programmes in molecular biology since its establishment in 1993.

The IMP and its neighbouring institutions offer a vibrant scientific atmosphere. Lecture series and weekly seminars provide PhD students with immediate access to many of the world’s most outstanding biologists. The Vienna BioCenter community with 150 research groups is a fertile ground for stimulating encounters and a good spirit – not last socially.

Meet former and current IMP PhD Students

phd program vienna

Apply to the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program

The programme has two international calls per year and recruits approximately 15 motivated young scientists in each call (all PhD Students at IMP are recruited through the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program). Access current calls via the official website of the programme:

Vienna BioCenter PhD Program

What are Group Leaders looking for in a PhD applicant? The Vienna BioCenter PhD Program is competitive and highly selective, so passion for science and research experience will be an important pre-condition. However, there is more to a good applicant. One IMP Group Leader stated that she was looking for "PhD candidates that have curious and creative minds, are passionate about science, are easy going and communicative, are highly motivated and have endurance."

And what can you expect from the programme? The best way to convey the essence of the IMP PhD student experience is perhaps to listen to past and present PhD students – for a start, please note our testimonials below, or read the interview with the 2018 Weintraub Award laureate Annika Nichols on her experience as a PhD student at the IMP.

phd program vienna

The Vienna BioCenter is highly international with excellent service facilities supporting the scientific research done here. This is really a great place to pursue competitive science.

A flexible curriculum

The programme's curriculum is flexible and was designed for and with PhD students. The Vienna BioCenter PhD students start with a 3-week introductory course – “Prime your PhD” – which is designed to prime and facilitate the implementation and development of their research projects, specifically on this campus. Throughout their training, students (like postdocs ) present their work to the campus community at the Monday Seminars .

This weekly seminar series is a great vehicle to share knowledge and expertise between different research groups and different institutes. At the same time, the seminars are an opportunity to train PhD students in presentation skills.

Numerous seminars and journal clubs take place on a regular basis, alongside several advanced courses such as scientific writing, advanced microscopy, data analysis, and others. In addition, PhD students benefit from career development workshops.

Each student is free to choose which courses he or she wants to participate in – moreover, students are encouraged to suggest and develop new courses. In addition, the VBC PhD students organise activities such as a retreat and a symposium each year. For this, they are provided with funding, support – and a lot of freedom to develop through task planning and implementation.

Alumni: What former PhD students did

phd program vienna

Out of 140 Vienna BioCenter PhD Students that graduated after PhD research at the IMP between in the 1998-2008 decade, no less than 50 are now in Group Leader positions.

A recent survey showed very high satisfaction among alumni: virtually all survey participants see their time at the Vienna BioCenter as having been a great asset for their careers.

CeMM is an international, independent and interdisciplinary Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. “From the clinic to the clinic”: Driven by medical needs, CeMM integrates basic research and clinical expertise to pursue innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches focused on cancer, inflammation and immune disorders.

The PhD Program will train a new generation of researchers based on a novel, post-genomic, molecular understanding of biological and pathological systems and will thereby contribute to shaping the predictive, preventive and personalized (also termed “precise”) medicine of the future. To reach this goal, students will be made familiar not only with biomedical technologies, but also with the basic principles of cell- and molecular biology and the application of this knowledge for a molecular understanding of diseases and targeted therapeutic concepts. The PhD students will also learn how to navigate the complexity of translationally-minded multidisciplinary biomedical projects at the level of communication and management.

A key feature of the CeMM PhD Program is its collaborative and inter-disciplinary work style. Scientists with different backgrounds such as computer scientists, medical doctors, life scientists, mathematicians, chemists or physicists work together at CeMM to solve complex scientific problems.

  • What is my motivation to do research in this area?
  • Am I willing to work in this area for many years?
  • Do I already have a certain career goal, and if so, how does this area fit into the bigger picture?
  • Do I see myself working in academia or industry in the future?
  • Who offers the best opportunities in this research area for me?

We advise you to first note down your top three research areas and narrow the list down to two or one if you can. There are no right or wrong answers here. Try to keep an open mind and answer as honestly as possible to help you make the best decision for yourself.

Points to reflect on:

  • What Ph.D. programs interest me?
  • Which of the programs align with my career goals?
  • What are my expectations for my Ph.D. education?
  •  Are there any projects I find particularly interesting? Why?

Our advice: Be curious and approach the different Ph.D. programs with an open mind. You might be surprised to find an interesting Ph.D. program you otherwise might not have considered.

Please consult our Thematic Program website for inspiration.

If you are not yet familiar with Vienna, we would like to introduce you to our hometown and briefly explain why Vienna is indeed the city of our dreams .

Vienna is not only a great place to work and study, but also a great place to live. Our coffee- house culture and food and entertainment options are world-class. We have a vibrant and dynamic arts and culture scene and are home to the Donauinselfest , the biggest free European open air music festival or the very popular Vienna Ball of Scienes . Have you ever dreamed of hitting the dance floor in a princess dress or tails and dancing the night away? If your answer is yes, then Vienna is right place for you. Where else do you have the opportunity to open a ball in your life or to waltz on a different floor every weekend during the ball season. Do not worry, every ball also has a disco floor, if classical music does not quite meet your taste. In addition, the city offers not only many architectural highlights, but also borders the Vienna Forest, one of the city's many natural leisure areas. Every summer, the banks of the Danube River and the Danube canal attract scores of people who engage in water sports or just hang out on the shore to enjoy the sunset after a long day. There are plenty of great reasons to move to Vienna, but before we give you our top 5, read how Vienna performs in an international context.

Our top 5 reasons why Vienna is one of the best places to live:

1. affordable housing

2. an affordable, modern, and well-functioning public transport network

3. one of the safest major cities in Europe

4. access to high-quality and safe public health and education systems

5. Rich cultural, leisure and sporting opportunities

6.The Viennese forest and the Danube Aupark national park  are all close to the city.

Hard facts about Vienna

Let's get to the hard facts about Vienna:

Area: 414.9 km2 with 23 districts

Listen to tunes about the city

Music is a big part of our cultural heritage, so it’s not surprising that there are over 3,000 tunes about Vienna. You can travel musically to Vienna by listening to the perfect song collection on Spotify compiled by the Austrian Tourist Board. Speaking of music, MedUni Vienna organizes an annual graduation ceremony for all its Ph.D. students in the beautiful performance hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus.  The Konzerthaus is, in our opinion, an appropriate place to celebrate the special moment when you’re officially awarded your Ph.D. in the presence of your family and friends.

The podcast " Tell me about Vienna "" takes you on several walks through Vienna and shares many interesting anecdotes about the city and its people. Unfortunately, the podcast is available only in German.

Researcher destination Austria

Another motivation to move to Vienna and start your scientific career here is that Austria has been continuously investing almost 3% of GDP in the area of innovation and research for years. This puts Austria above the EU average and is considered a strong innovator among medium and small enterprises. The result is a very active and creative scientific community and many industrial research institutions that have been founded or established in Austria. Scientists and researchers benefit from e.g. facilitated residence regulations and tax advantages when moving to Austria. We recommend the brochure Researcher's Guide to AUSTRIA to get a very good overview of the Austrian research landscape.

Our campus is located in the middle of Vienna's ninth district and consists of several buildings in the immediate vicinity of our Rectorate. The Rectorate building is directly connected to the AKH (General Hospital). Our university houses 30 university hospitals and two clinical institutes, as well as 13 medical theory centers and numerous highly specialized laboratories . Each of our buildings is easy to reach by public transport or by bike. There are countless opportunities to buy food and drink on campus, including two canteens, a supermarket, and a MedUni Shop with an adjoining café. Parents can have their children looked after in one of our kindergartens. The Medical University of Vienna has been closely connected to the district and its people for centuries and therefore makes its unique collection of teaching materials, models, and instruments available to the public in the Josephinum . The Josephinum was founded in the 17th century as a medical-surgical academy to train military doctors for the Austrian army and is still part of the Medical University. The ninth district is a popular residential area in a central location with green spaces, and a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, parks, and sports clubs.

We are always evolving, and so is our campus! Over the next five years, our campus will grow by two more buildings. In addition to the new Eric Kandl Building for Precision Medicine and the Research Centre for Translational Medicine and Therapies , we are also building a state-of-the-art new campus in Mariannengasse . We are already looking forward to welcoming many of our Ph.D. students on the new campus in a few years’ time. Here you can take a look at the new campus and the status of the construction project.

Our campus continues to grow with us and, as a result, has many faces.

The Department of Communication at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Center for Doctoral Studies offers the possibility of conducting a PhD in Communication Science as part of the Doctoral Program in Social Sciences. A doctoral thesis is an original piece of research of substantial length that makes a genuine contribution to human knowledge and sciences. It is therefore significantly different to a Master thesis and much more demanding.

The program is open to research which explores diverse contents, processes, effects, contexts and systematic research questions within the area of communication and media.

The Center for Doctoral Studies at the University of Vienna offers potential doctoral students a structured overview of the requirements as well as the curriculum online. Information on admission for graduates of universities other than the University of Vienna can be found on the website of Teaching Affairs and Student Services .

Starting October 1, 2020, the Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences was established. ViDSS aims to promote innovative, excellent and problem-oriented research.

For the doctoral research field "Communication", the following is the doctoral advisory board.

  • Assoz. Prof. Mag. Dr. Florian Arendt
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sabine Einwiller
  • Univ.-Prof. Folker Hanusch, PhD
  • ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Fritz Hausjell
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sophie Lecheler (Director of Studies)
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jörg Matthes
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Katharine Sarikakis
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Annie Waldherr
  • Ass.-Prof. Dr. Claudia Wilhelm, M.A.

When searching for a supervisor for their doctoral thesis, interested students are advised to read through the academic/research profiles of available professors and habilitated scientific researchers with habilitation respectively. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to direct your questions to the Center for Doctoral Studies.

In order to gain registration approval, prospective students have to write research proposal and present it to a special committee. This presentation is public. Generally two presentations dates are available per semester.

For a successful presentation of your exposé, a close collaboration with your supervisor is essential. Your exposé should:

  • be formulated in a clear way,
  • be well-grounded,
  • be coherent,
  • include leading research question and hypotheses,
  • and focus on the research aim.

Moreover, a clear elaboration on how the method-in-use enables answering the research question is crucial. The presentation takes about 7 to 8 minutes.
