How to Host a School Assembly – Assembly Conduction Script and Activities

A school assembly is an important gathering of all members of a school including, students, teachers, principals, and other school communities. Indeed, the school assembly is conducted for different purposes, such as communicating information on a routine or weekly basis, attendance check, students’ performance in different activities like debate, song performance, a talent show, and many more. School assembly is a legal requirement in most schools and most of the time this opportunity is given to students to conduct and organize the morning school assembly. If you are given this opportunity to conduct an assembly at your school and you don’t know how to host a school assembly, don’t worry, because this article will help you step by step to organize and plan the assembly program and make a good and positive experience.

If you don’t want to put pen to paper or not convenient to type the news script. No worries! Just dictate or talk and accurately convert your voice or speech to text. Click on the link below and learn how to convert your voice to text easily.

How to Host a School Assembly

Gather the content and determine the assembly theme.

The first and most important aspect is to determine the theme and content you are going to cover in the assembly because you are planning in advance what you are going to do in the whole program. The school assembly theme can be different and depending on the time and occasion. for instance, the day you are going to host your school assembly, that day is the technology day, so your content of the assembly can be relevant to that day. You can make a checklist of the things and activities you are going to do during the assembly. You can add the following activities and contents to your checklist:

Morning Assembly Speech For Students by a Teacher

Contents You Can Add in a School Assembly Checklist

  • List of people who are giving a speech about the topic of the theme
  • Activities such as games, debate, question and answer session, IQ (intelligence quotient), a trivia challenge, and talent show
  • Principal’s Message
  • Students Message
  • Animal Awareness
  • Distributing gifts/prizes

You can give the students the information in advance and tell them about the theme, topic, and activities they are going to perform on that day.

When your theme is determined, then you can add the above-mentioned activities and contents to your school assembly function.

Note: The pre-mentioned contents are a general workflow for a school assembly. When the theme and contents of an assembly are determined, then you can follow the following workflow to start and end the school assembly brilliantly.

Moreover, you can host the function alone or enlist 1 more speaker or anchor to host the program with you. If you choose 1 more person to be a presenter at the assembly, start working and preparing as early as possible and give plenty of time for him/her to practice and get ready.

Script to Host a School Assembly

Start with praising god.

presentation of school assembly

Try to make the first good impression at the beginning of the function and the first lines to make a good impression are starting by praising God. You can say the following lines as an illustration.

“To start by the name of God who is merciful and benevolence, ever has existed and ever will for us to glory in anything else, would be in, as there is nothing greater than God, there is no calling greater than God.”

“O merciful God, when nobody could be for me, you were there. When my life was destroyed, you lifted me up. When I was tormented and hurt, you set me free.

No worship and love are greater than the worship of my Lord. His wisdom sings independence to my heart and complete body. So I will praise his holy name. My praise is heartfelt and strong.

I lift up my arms and voice to say: you are love and life. You are truth and justice. You are mercy and grace. And nothing can separate me from your worship and love.

You are my savior, my lord. so I cry out: Praise the Lord! Praise his great and holy name. Allah Almighty! Glory Hallelujah! in Christ, my soul flies free! In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

“O Lord, Let me hear you. My soul is weary. nervousness, scared, and doubt Surround me, On each side.

Yet your feet mercy cannot be held back from those that cry out to you, hear my cry.

Let me trust in your mercy. Show me how. Free me. Free me from anxiety and stress. That I may find relaxation and rest in your loving arms. Amen.”

Ideas for a School Assembly Guaranteed to Engage Students

presentation of school assembly

Last updated on August 12, 2022

School assemblies can be met with groans if students are expecting another boring presentation. But with the right type of presentation, you can make your school assembly both entertaining and educational. We have some creative ideas to help you build your assembly program this year.

Educational Entertainment

Your assembly ideas will naturally include some education – you are a school, after all! Teach the kids about something they’re really interested in outside of the typical classroom setting. Your final choice will depend on your school’s grade levels, attention spans, and budget.

Say it with a song

Singing about serious subjects like math or science may seem silly, but many children’s musicians specialize in educational songs! These entertainers are probably better suited for younger kids but can be a lot of fun for all ages. Soon enough, your students will be learning the words and singing along about subjects that cover friendship to geography. And bonus, music primes the brain for learning so they’ll perform better when they return to the classroom.

Focus on teamwork

The world of sports can teach your students a lot about teamwork, discipline, and focusing on their goals. Book a sports exhibition act like BMX riders, acrobats, skateboard riders, or ball stunts to captivate your students with their mindblowing feats.

If your sports-minded youngsters are in need of motivation, include an athletic speaker in your school assembly program. These professionals from the sports world will share motivational stories of perseverance that inspire students to reach for the stars.

book an athletic speaker for a school assembly

Invite a mad scientist

Nothing says educational fun like a science assembly! Book a science party to set up exciting experiments that explore interesting subjects like chemistry, biology, anatomy, and more. Consider having students attend the assembly in smaller groups so everyone gets a chance to participate in the demonstrations.

Learn from the past

Bring history to life with a visit from a prominent person from the past! Historical characters dress and stay in character to share the accomplishments of great figures like Ben Franklin or Eleanor Roosevelt. Book a presidential impersonator like Abraham Lincoln or George Washington to share what it was like to lead the United States during milestones in our history. You can even hire Civil War reenactors to give students a historically-accurate look at life as a soldier.

book historical characters for a school assembly

Character Education

Growing up is challenging and students are faced with all kinds of choices and changes every day. As educators, you can provide guidance on helping them be good people. Include character education in your school assembly ideas to deal with these issues in a positive way.

Listen to others’ stories

A good storyteller can engage kids with personal (or fictionalized) stories about all kinds of subjects. From divorce to puberty to big issues like gun control, a storyteller will craft relatable tales that let students know they aren’t alone.

Bullying is something that every school struggles with, so an anti-bullying assembly is important for students. Book a motivational speaker to help your students look inward and learn to treat others the way they want to be treated.

👉 Read this: Anti-Bullying Assembly Ideas to Impact Your Students

If you want to address big issues with a lighter touch, think about booking a stand-up comedian instead. These pros are great at tailoring material to their audience. Subjects can include first crushes, dealing with acne, annoying siblings, social media woes, and parents who just don’t understand. When students are all laughing at the same things, they may start to realize that their peers are humans, too.

Share it with a skit

Sometimes younger children can’t absorb a heavy discussion or speech, so try something more light-hearted! Hire a puppet show to put on skits that deal with friendship and sharing, or even more serious subjects like abuse.

If puppets are too juvenile for your students, consider an improv group instead. The kids may enjoy tossing out subjects for the group to focus on while performing silly skits. And you’ll get an idea about what social subjects are most meaningful to your students!

book an improv group for a school assembly

Encourage awareness

Building good character means paying attention to your health, too. Young people are often struggling with body image, depression, or self-esteem issues. Let them know that it’s necessary to acknowledge these feelings! Book a health and fitness expert to lead a discussion on everything from healthy diets to mental health awareness.

Being aware of your environment is another big part of becoming a well-rounded person. Help your students take care of Mother Earth with some guidance from an environmental speaker . They may even be inspired to take some tips home to their parents!

🏫 Coming up with school assembly ideas that will keep your students engaged is a challenge for every teacher or principal. The important thing is to let your school know that you care. Luckily, there are pros to help you share messages of love and support!

School assemblies – How to make yours powerful and leave a lasting impression

presentation of school assembly

James Handscombe offers his thoughts on how to make the most of your assemblies, and what it takes to keep your audience engaged…

James Handscombe

I walk to school along a chestnut-lined avenue, early sunlight illuminating a crisp autumn morning. I bend down to pick up a prickly green husk and, like schoolboys everywhere, delight in the shiny brown conker that lies within.

Unlike those ubiquitous students, I’m an adult – I am, in fact, 43 and the headmaster – and my ruminations now go beyond the potential for demolishing my friends’ conkers with my new treasure.

I reach the end of my commute as the bells chime the hour, and stroll to the front of the assembly hall where I hold up my glistening prize and explain that the conker is a symbol of hope; that the trees are metaphors for the students, and that the season of autumn itself is a rich source of inspiration both for poets and aspiring scholars.

I tie in the school ethos of high ambition, and round things off with a few cheering words of comfort.

Messages and more

Some of my colleagues have the impression that this is how I prepare assemblies, and I prefer to bask in their admiration rather than setting them right – because it cannot, of course, be the whole story.

That serendipitous finding of the conker and the delivery of the assembly may be the end points of the process, but it’s certainly not the case that everything else took place within a short train journey.

Crafting a powerful assembly takes time. It involves writing 1,500 words in coherent sentences and structured paragraphs so that the listener, without aids to memory or concentration, is at least able to take away the key messages.

This, therefore, is the first characteristic of a powerful assembly – messages that are clearly communicated and rendered memorable.

That said, a great assembly does more than simply hammer home some key messages – it exemplifies the school ethos. It not only tells, but also shows. When sitting in a powerful assembly, you’ll hear described the aspirations of the community, but also see them lived.

Exactly what characteristics the assembly has will thus depend on the ethos of the school in which you work. Using someone else’s assembly as inspiration is wise; downloading and delivering it as written, much less so.

The final characteristic of a great assembly springs from that idea of communicating an ethos, and it’s that every assembly is a teaching opportunity. Students should go away having learned something.

Beyond the curriculum

To achieve these ends, you can deploy personal anecdotes, high culture references, pop culture references, tales from history, stories of inspiring heroes, or warnings from the lives of those for whom ‘hero’ maybe isn’t the right word.

To tie it all together, you can draw on your own ruminations and reflections, the words of your foundational documents or the content of assemblies gone by – this is a team effort, of course, since building an ethos is the work of many speakers .

The idea of showing, rather than simply telling is an extraordinarily powerful one for an assembly writer. We encourage students to use their words cleverly and develop a wide vocabulary. Assemblies give them opportunities to see us doing the same ourselves.

Assemblies also remove us from our expertise pigeonholes. A maths teacher can endorse the interests of the history teacher.

The English teacher can speak to the beauty of maths. They allow us communicate our humanity and tell (suitably Bowdlerised) tales of misspent youth, recount eccentric enthusiasms and share the words and music that make our fragile hearts beat faster.

In an assembly we can pass on the advice and life lessons we long for students to learn, but which simply won’t fit into the timetabled curriculum.

High and low

One of the most challenging decisions you’ll make is how to pitch your cultural allusions. Should you talk about autumn by invoking Axl Rose’s words on the cold ‘November Rain’, or by citing John Keats’ misty and far mellower ode?

My reflection on this is that assemblies are about learning, so we should expose them to things they don’t know. I like to aim just over their heads, with content that will be largely new to them, but which they may have at least heard of, dipped into or been intrigued by.

This way, they should be looking up and lifted by what is offered.

This approach gives you the opportunity to stealthily drop popular culture references into your discussion with the same gravitas and respect you’d afford great writers from centuries past.

It emphasises that the students’ existing culture is valuable, and worthy of engagement and reflection. It also encourages them to listen out for your roguish tricks. They might just be listening carefully for the next sneaky Taylor Swift lyric, but at least they are listening.

Natural bias

Another challenge is that your cultural touchstones will spring from the miniscule part of human experience that is your life thus far. On our own, none of us can ever be as culturally diverse as the schools we serve – a natural bias we would do well to monitor and take active steps to remedy.

Expressing your own character and sharing your culture with students is a real privilege of delivering an assembly, and one we shouldn’t be shy of (Paul Simon and JRR Tolkien are frequent visitors to my scripts).

However, we must also be careful not to give the impression that this is the only culture we’re interested in, or worse, that this is the only culture that has value.

The poetry of Rabindranath Tagore; the novels of James Baldwin; the history of Sudan – all have an equal claim to time and space. Writing an assembly is an opportunity for us to learn something new ourselves, as well as teach.

When approached as a standalone presentation, however, even a truly brilliant assembly will lack power.

An assembly’s greatness comes from its place in a collection, which is why I believe assembly givers should also be listeners, and why the best cultural reference for an assembly is another assembly – ideally one given by someone else.

These cross-references allow assemblies to reinforce and build on each other. They turn ephemeral, individual pieces into a rich and evolving tapestry of shared understanding. They can tap into and develop the ethos of the school, and turn a building into a community.

8 features of powerful assemblies

  • An assembly is made up of stories, references, a big picture ethos and take-home messages – start with one and add the others in
  • Your take-home message must be clear; structure the assembly to make it so
  • You are exemplifying good writing for the students; spend time crafting your sentences and paragraphs
  • Remember that an assembly is another opportunity for pupils to learn something, especially advice and life lessons that won’t fit into the timetabled curriculum
  • Your assembly isn’t just what you say, but how you say it. Make sure you’re in touch with the school ethos and its aspirations
  • Take inspiration from all walks of life, including high culture, pop culture, tales from history, stories of inspiring heroes or warnings from the lives of villains. Ensure these sources are culturally diverse
  • Aim high with your content. Assemblies should expose pupils to things that are new to them, or which they may be somewhat familiar with and would like to explore further
  • Have fun with your assemblies, and be your own, idiosyncratic self – even if this involves a fascination with the fruit of the horse-chestnut

The Best School Assembly Activities to Engage Your Students

School assemblies are a great way to encourage students to come together and build community. When planning school assemblies, it’s essential to consider what activities you want to include. A good list of activities could include presentations by guest speakers, team-building exercises, music performances, student recognition awards, and interactive games.

School assemblies are essential to the school experience as they allow the school to develop relationships and enjoy learning. Schools typically use some communities to bring the school together, such as competitions between the school houses, holiday-related activities, talent shows, breathing exercises, and presentations. These school assembly activities benefit the students and allow them to explore their hidden talents.

These activities allow students to socialize, collaborate, and learn in a safe and engaging environment. In this blog, we will explore some of the activities that can be used in school assemblies to make them exciting and memorable experiences for everyone. To know more, continue reading! You can find some of the everyday school assembly activities list given below: –

Competitions between the School Houses

School assemblies are a great way to promote healthy competition between schoolhouses. There are a variety of activities that can be used to challenge students and encourage them to work together. Popular ideas include quiz competitions, sports activities, and creative challenges.

These competitions help to foster a sense of camaraderie and team spirit while allowing students to showcase their skills and abilities. Assemblies are also an excellent opportunity to recognize individual achievements while teaching students the importance of cooperation and good sportsmanship.

Holiday-Related Activities

Several activities can be used to celebrate school holidays. These activities bring the school community together and create positive memories for students. A few examples of activities for school holiday celebrations include:

  • Organizing a potluck lunch for the school community.
  • Hosting a holiday-themed movie night.
  • Creating a themed craft fair.
  • Inviting a special guest speaker.
  • Managing a holiday parade.

Other activities could include:

  • Decorating the school grounds with lights.
  • Hosting a holiday carnival.
  • Having a student talent show.
  • By engaging in these holiday-related activities, students will develop a sense of community while celebrating the holidays.

Breathing Exercises

School assemblies are an essential part of the school day, giving students a break from their studies and an opportunity to learn new skills or participate in activities. One activity that can be incorporated into school assemblies is breathing exercises.

Breathing exercises can help students relax and focus and can be done in various ways. For example, students can practice belly breathing, which involves inhaling and exhaling deeply, or alternate nostril breathing, which involves breathing in and out through each nostril separately. These exercises can help improve concentration, reduce stress, and improve overall mental health.

Presentation

As an educational institution, providing students with engaging and informative school assembly activities is essential. A well-planned crowd can help cultivate a positive school culture, reinforce crucial values, and motivate students to participate in school activities. A comprehensive list of available activities can ensure meaningful and beneficial assemblies.

Whether the focus is on academic topics, community building, or celebrating student achievements, a carefully curated list of activities can help make assemblies successful. By providing a variety of compelling choices, schools can ensure that their bodies are successful and engaging.

Many activities can be enjoyed and participated in during school assemblies. Each activity is designed to help students learn and grow and make the assembly atmosphere fun and enjoyable for everyone. From competitions between school houses to holiday-related activities, talent shows, breathing exercises, and presentations, there is a wide range of activities to choose from.

Take the stress out of assemblies: how to plan an assembly in less than 10 minutes.

Stressed Teacher Planning Assembly VotesforSchools

Help! I need assembly ideas!

Are you tired of struggling to come up with assembly ideas  for your secondary school? Don't worry, we've got you covered! With our simple 5-minute assembly planning method, you'll never have to google " assembly ideas secondary " again.

Assemblies are an important part of school life, providing a space for the community to come together, celebrate success and learn about new topics. But, let's be real, planning assemblies can be a daunting task for teachers. That's why we want to share a simple and effective way to plan assemblies that won't take up all your precious planning time.

What is the purpose of school assemblies?

Assemblies are often undervalued and under-utilised, but they are great spaces to celebrate success and come together as a community - Sam Brown, writing for TES.

As Sam writes, assembly is a time for your school to come together: like a giant staff meeting, with all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that make up your school. They’re a time to talk about what’s going on, both in school and outside of it.

They’re also a great time to teach your pupils about something new, such a different cultural celebration or to embed British values through fable-like stories that tackle issues such as racism or bullying.

Anti-Bullying Week 2023

Banner about signing up for anti-bullying week

Oftentimes, there’s something big going on in school to talk about, such as Internet Safety Week or the upcoming school fete. On these occasions, either you’ve got a clear message to deliver (such as “don’t forget to bring a tin of beans!”) or a quick search online can pull up over a million different free assemblies to download and go for whichever Awareness Day is coming up soon.

But what if there isn’t a big awareness day this week? What if your mind is drawing blanks on what to deliver in front of hundreds of children? How do you decide what to deliver your weekly assembly on, and how long do you need to spend creating resources? That’s where we come in.

Planning for assembly: coming up with endless ideas

One of the best sources of inspiration for assemblies is the news. News articles bring us thousands of stories every day about what is going on in the world. They’re a stream of constant inspiration. And the best part? Websites like BBC Newsround translate these stories into child-friendly language, taking away a huge chunk of work for teachers.

With just a quick look at BBC Newsround, you'll have access to hundreds of ideas for assemblies. All you have to do is choose the ones you want to talk about. Here are two ways to use news articles in your assembly:

The Headlines Assembly

Give an overview of current news stories, keeping your pupils up to date with the world around them.

This assembly is a great way to showcase British Values and prepare your for pupils for life in modern Britain.

To prepare for your assembly, choose 4-5 articles and copy their headlines onto different Powerpoint Presentation slides. Also, read the articles (or print them if you’re likely to forget), and head to your assembly.

During the assembly, show each headline to your pupils and ask them to put their hand up if they’ve heard about this in the news. If yes: brilliant. You can choose a child to take over and explain what they already know to their peers. If not, explain the story to the children using the article that you found earlier.

You may find that your assembly attendees are so interested in one story that you don’t get through all five, but it’s always best to be prepared with a few, especially if you’re not a fan of having volunteer helpers in your assembly.

The Full Story Assembly

‘Deep dive’ into one news story, using it as a teaching moment.

You may find that just one story is dominating the news right now, or there may be one that fits your school ethos well. In this case, you only need to choose one news event to talk about in your assembly.

To dive deeper into just one story, we recommend finding a few images online that help pupils to visualise the event, or even a video that explains what is happening. This news event can be the springboard for talking about why the issue is important, and reminding young people of the expectations that you have for them in school. Again, a British Values goldmine!

How do I do I hold your students’ attention?

Depending on the school assembly program topic, your show might have hilarious and interactive magic, comedy, or it might have wacky ‘game show’ set pieces pitting students vs, teachers!

There might be goofy sound effects, music, and more! Did I mention how “interactive” my school assemblies are? For most of my shows, I get a DOZEN kids or more on stage to help!

Using all of these different presentation ‘tools’ means I keep the kids riveted from start to finish – they never take their eyes off me because they can’t wait to see what happens next!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “There are a LOT of choices for school assemblies out there – how do I know this guy’s any good?” I’m glad you asked.

I’m not famous – I’m not Bill Nye, even though I have an award-winning Science Assembly and a hilariously interactive Math Assembly.

I’m not David Copperfield or Criss Angel, even though I use amazing, visual, and hilarious magic to teach character education and bully-proofing concepts.

I’ve never performed in Las Vegas, even though you’ll love the full color sets I bring with every assembly program. They turn an ordinary school assembly program into a complete theatrical experience for your students.

You can believe that I will bring the school assembly highlight of your year to your students because of two things:

  • The incredible feedback I’ve received over the 20+ years – I’ve been doing this (check out comments from past school administrators, principals, PTA/PTO parents, media specialists, and more throughout this website.)
  • My incredible guarantee . Here it is:

Oh, and after having performed 400 shows a year for the past 20 years in 36 states across the United States, NO ONE has ever requested a refund.

In fact, many elementary schools and public library clients have me come back year after year.

With 9 different school assembly topics (and plenty of library shows) including “just for fun” field day/family night/reward options, there’s plenty of worthwhile options that will benefit YOUR school!

Pro tip: make your presentation as interactive as possible. Students have an attention span of two to three minutes per year of age. To keep minds from wandering off, include some interactive games or activities in the lesson. For example, if you conducted a lesson on the respiratory system, you could ask them to practice breathing techniques.

Maintain eye contact with your students, and you’ll get instant feedback on how interested they are in the interactive presentation.

Rose Parade 2024: The floats, performances, celebrity appearances and more

People in the crowd cheer as floats pass by at the 135th Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif..

What we know

  • The 135th Rose Parade started today at 8 a.m. PT/11 a.m. ET. This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language.”
  • The parade was broadcast on multiple networks — including ABC, NBC and Univision — and streamed on platforms such as YouTube and Pluto TV.
  • This year’s celebration is being hosted by CBS anchor Jericka Duncan, Nickelodeon and Disney actor Gabrielle Elyse and 17-year-old “Dance Moms” star Pressley Hosbach. Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winning actress Audra McDonald will serve as grand marshal.
  • The festivities kicked off with a performance by singer Michelle Williams, alongside “American Idol” star David Archuleta, “The Voice” 2012 winner Cassadee Pope and musical artist Rush Davis. Singer Jordin Sparks will perform the grand finale.

Michigan and Alabama to face off in Rose Bowl football game

presentation of school assembly

Aria Bendix

The 110th annual Rose Bowl game will begin at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET.

The fourth-ranked University of Alabama Crimson Tide are up against the top-ranked University of Michigan Wolverines. The College Football Playoff semifinal will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN.

Alabama has won six national championships in the last 15 years, most recently in 2020.

Michigan hasn't won a national championship since 1997, but this is its third straight season in the playoffs. The Wolverines have played in the Rose Bowl 20 times before today's game — more than any other Big Ten school , according to the university. If they win, it will be the first time in the program's 144-year history that the Wolverines have nabbed 14 victories in a single season.

Michigan wide receiver Eamonn Dennis during practice Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, in Inglewood, Calif.

Winning floats highlight parade's musical theme

The Cowboy Channel's "Cowgirls Rule!" floats picked up the Americana Trophy for its depiction of national treasures and traditions. The float celebrating women in Western sports featured a performance from country singer Annie Bosko.

The Tournament Volunteer Trophy, which awards an outstanding floral presentation that embodies this year's theme, went to Kiwanis International's "Serving in Harmony" float. It depicted a sheepdog listening to music on a gramophone with a piano in the background.

The San Diego Zoo’s float, “It Began with a Roar,” took home the Sweepstakes Trophy for the most beautiful entry based on float design, floral presentation and entertainment. It featured representations of the zoo’s animals — Karen the orangutan, Omeo the koala, Chinook the polar bear, Gramma the Galapagos tortoise — as well the zoo’s icon, Rex the lion.

The San Diego Zoo float rolls down the parade route at the 135th Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.

The parade closed out with a performance from Jordin Sparks

Singer Jordin Sparks closed out the celebrations with a grand finale performance of her 2008 hit "No Air." Sparks, dressed in a white, black and red corset and flanked by dancers in red, white and green outfits, performed in front of a float and a sign with the words "ROSE PARADE."

Dancers also held up signs that said "GO JORDIN" and ran past with flags bearing her initials.

Sparks wished onlookers a "Happy New Year" and declared it was "time to celebrate."

Illinois float pays tribute to Route 66 and Blues Brothers

A float celebrating Illinois, titled “Illinois: The Middle of Beats & Blues,” paid tribute to the Blues Brothers and Route 66.

The a cappella group "Straight No Chaser" performed music of the Blues Brothers as more than a dozen dancers dressed in the traditional black sunglasses and black suits danced alongside the float.

The float was commissioned by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism.

Tiger Squadron flies in formation over parade

The Tiger Squadron, a Southern California-based precision formation flying crew, soared over the parade. The formation was comprised of nine planes.

The formation flew by as a float honoring veterans learning to code was being shown. The float had military paraphernalia and in the center featured a computer display, representing the veterans who enter the coding field. Words on the float read, "Deployment to Employment."

Drumroll! Marching bands make their appearances

The United States Marine Corps West Coast Composite Band performed at the start of the parade. It's made up of three groups: The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, the 1st Marine Division Band and Marine Band San Diego.

Other bands that have appeared so far include Pipes on Parade, a collection of bagpipers dressed in authentic Highland kilts. This was their first-ever Rose Parade performance.

The Pasadena City College Herald Trumpets ushered in this year's Rose Queen, Naomi Stillitano, a senior at Arcadia High School. The trumpet band features nine high school musicians who auditioned for the spots.

And the more-than-400-person Michigan Marching Band performed ahead of their school's Rose Bowl game against Alabama.

'Visit Lauderdale' performed by Alexander Star

Emmy-nominated songwriter Alexander Star performed his South Florida-themed song "Visit Lauderdale" — a tribute to the Broward County-based city.

Star referenced Ft. Lauderdale iconography, singing about the area code with the lyrics "954 we show out" and later in the song mentioning the local airport Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport by suggesting those who want to visit fly into "FLL."

The float had Florida hallmarks like palm trees and manatees. At one point, so much colorful smoke erupted to celebrate Star's performance that he temporarily disappeared beneath it.

The Rose Parade’s 135-year history

The first Rose Parade was held in 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club, a private social club in Pasadena, to showcase Southern California’s blooming flowers in winter. A parade of horse-drawn carriages displayed hundreds of colorful flowers, with games to follow, including chariot races, jousting, foot races and tug-of-war.

By 1920, the parade fully transitioned to motor-driven floats. It was televised starting in the 1940s, and the 1954 festivities marked the first color broadcast in the U.S.

The parade has been held annually on Jan. 1 (or Jan. 2 if New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday) with a few exceptions: It was canceled in 1942, 1943 and 1945 due to World War II, then again in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic.

Audra McDonald, the parade's grand marshal, has arrived

Broadway legend Audra McDonald, this year's grand marshal, has arrived on her float. McDonald, who has six Tony awards, was wearing a white coat and teal blouse as she waved to those in attendance.

Grand Marshal Audra McDonald, left, waves to the crowd.

Organizers said McDonald was selected as grand marshal because she is the "embodiment of the theme," which is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language.”

The parade kicks off with a medley of pop songs

From covers of Coldplay to Troye Sivan to Snow Patrol, the "opening spectacular" encompassed a range of songs by artists both new and old. The performance also appeared to touch on the parade's theme, which is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language,” according to the event's website .

Online, the performance received mixed reviews, with one person posting to X writing that they "would like to see more floats, less musical acts."

That person got their wish — following the musical act, the parade officially kicked off.

Who’s performing this year

Openers: Michelle Williams, Grammy Award-winning R&B singer and former member of Destiny’s Child, will perform in the center of a giant rose for this year’s opening act. She will be joined by “American Idol” star David Archuleta, “The Voice” 2012 winner Cassadee Pope and musical artist Rush Davis.

Mid-parade performances: Emmy-nominated songwriter Alexander Star will sing a tribute to Fort Lauderdale atop the “Visit Lauderdale” float. The “Explore Louisiana” float will feature a Mardis Gras-inspired performance from Cajun fiddler Amanda Shaw, guitarist James Burton and Grammy-nominated Zydeco musician Sean Ardoin. And the “Enjoy Illinois” float will showcase the a capella group Straight No Chaser, known for blending blues and jazz with country and rock.

Finale: Jordin Sparks, Grammy-nominated singer and winner of Season 6 of “American Idol,” will close out the festivities with a three-song medley.

Rose Parade floats usually take months to build. Then, the week before the parade, they’re adorned with fresh ingredients like seeds, bark and flowers.

The parade is produced by the nonprofit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association and spans more than 5 miles along Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard. The football game to follow is held at the nearby Rose Bowl Stadium.

When is the Rose Parade, how to watch and what to expect

Natalie Kainz

An expected 800,000 spectators will flock to Pasadena, California, today to watch floral floats, equestrian units and marching bands fill the streets during the 135th annual New Year’s Day tradition: the Rose Parade.

This year’s parade theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language.” 2024 Tournament of the Roses President Alex Aghajanian said the theme was chosen because “in a world of different cultures, beliefs, hopes, and dreams, one language unites us all — music.”

After the parade, the 110th annual Rose Bowl game will kick off at 1 p.m. PT, when the Alabama Crimson Tide face off against the Michigan Wolverines.
