Invite former students to come back and share their achievements or favorite school memories. This is especially fun during spirit week, when older alumni can share their experiences from their own time at your school.

Fight bullying behavior with a school assembly dedicated to the topic. Bring in a special speaker, show anti-bullying videos , or teach kids how to be upstanders in their school community.

Put together a curated collection of your students’ artwork, whether it’s been created at school or at home. Give everyone time during the school day to visit the “exhibits,” and let the artists stand by to answer questions about their work. (Consider adding a section for teacher-created artwork too!)

Raise money or awareness for your school or a favorite cause with a walk-athon, bike-athon, dance-athon, read-athon, math-a-thon , or other fun ongoing activity. The bigger the school, the longer you can keep the “a-thon” going!

Cultural Performance

Think delicious nutritious recipes from a local chef, fun ways to get exercise from a local sports hero, mindfulness and stress management with a yoga instructor, and so on.

Your school is full of people with special skills and talents, and many of them would love the chance to teach others how to do their favorite activities. Teachers, staff, and even students can show each other how to knit, take better photos, perform magic, pull off basketball trick shots, and anything else they love.

(Learn to) Dance Party

Get students up and moving by teaching them new dance moves! Teach the whole school how to line dance, or create some simple choreography for everyone to master as a “school dance.” You can also break students into smaller groups and have them make the rounds to learn a specific dance style (ballet, jazz, ballroom, etc.) from an expert. (Whenever you’re planning physical activities, ensure you’re considering ways to make them inclusive for students with mobility limitations.)

Lip-Sync Battle

Challenge each class or homeroom to create their own lip-sync battle routine. Then, battle it out in a school-wide assembly to find the ultimate winners.

Poetry Slam

Show kids the magic of written verse with a school-wide poetry slam. It takes some preparation in advance, but the results can be incredible. Learn how to hold your own poetry slam here.

Readers Theater

Ask teachers and their classes to prepare readers theater presentations. These require less prep and practice than a play or skit but are still engaging for others to watch and enjoy. Instead, the performance is all about the performer’s voices, facial expressions, and enthusiasm for their roles. Learn more about readers theater here.

Recycling Kickoff

Many schools are committing to going green by starting a recycling program or enhancing their existing one. A kickoff assembly is a great time to get everyone on board with the new habits. School Slideshow

This is an amazing idea for the end of a semester or school year. Assemble pictures you’ve collected, featuring as many students, teachers, and staff as possible. Such a fun way to wrap up and create a sense of school community!

School Spirit Skits

Let students create and perform skits about their school, sharing their favorite things about their alma mater and maybe poking a little gentle fun at things too. Assembly Idea 1: Climate Change

Start your academic year with an assembly that educates students about climate change and its effects. Students can hear firsthand about the current U.S. government policies, ways to fight climate change locally, and global initiatives taking place to help protect the environment.

Your assembly can also feature a panel discussion with advocates, climate researchers, or local activists, providing their insight into the impacts of climate change and what actions we can take as a community to support environmentalism.

This assembly is a great way to arm your student body with meaningful knowledge and tools they can use to make a difference in our planet’s future!

Assembly Idea 2: Fireworks Night/ The Gunpowder Plot

Fireworks Night or The Gunpowder Plot are great ideas for school assemblies! Learning more about this famous historical event is an excellent opportunity for the students.

With a dramatic narration, re-enactment, and plenty of exploding sound effects, teachers and students alike can enjoy this creative approach to learning. A bonus is that students experience the thrill of fireworks during their school day!

Assembly Idea 3: The History Of Halloween

As we approach the end of October, why not use our school assembly time to explore the history of Halloween? We can look back to ancient Celtic and Christian celebrations that have evolved into the fun holiday we all enjoy today.

Students can learn about its origins while still having lots of fun—from sharing costumes and incorporating games into the assembly.

Exploring different cultures is an invaluable opportunity, and learning about the history of Halloween is a great way to do this. It will give members of our school community a newfound appreciation for what makes Halloween so unique.

Assembly Idea 4: The Meaning of Christmas

With decorations and festivities, the Christmas season offers children an opportunity to learn about this holiday’s history. At your school assembly, challenge students to think about the meaning of Christmas by discussing how it evolved in both a secular and spiritual context.

Bring in particular interactive elements such as carolling or special music that reinforces the importance of the holiday message that emphasises love, joy, hope, and peace.

You can also invite guest speakers with personal stories to share relevant to the theme of Christmas to help bring your points home. This assembly will foster powerful conversations and meaningful reflection on what makes Christmas and life exceptional and inspiring!

Assembly Idea 5: New Year Resolutions

A new school year brings a chance to set big goals, think about improving, and have fun! A New Year Resolution assembly idea makes it easy to get the whole school thinking, setting goals, and having a blast while doing it. Have an explanation of a New Year resolution and examples of some real answers from students. Encourage everyone to take part and make their own.

To make this interactive, you could allow students to share some of their resolutions in front of the school, motivating them to stick with those resolutions throughout the year. It’s also an excellent way for other students and staff to become inspired by each other’s ideas and advice.

What better way to kick off a fantastic academic year than with an inspirational new effort radiating throughout the school?

Assembly Idea 6: The Start of Spring

As the winter snow melts away and leaves new life in its wake, it’s time to celebrate the start of spring with an assembly idea that allows your student body to connect with nature! Planting a school garden or beautification project is a great way for students to get outside and create meaningful change.

Not only can this activity help with class unity, but it will also make the school more attractive and often more environmentally conscious. Incorporating special activities like an art mural project or light engineering challenge could provide a fun and educational experience for everyone involved.

By introducing the season of growth and renewal through an assembly focused on making nature-based changes, your student body can embody those feelings all year!

Assembly Idea 7: How To Beat Exam Stress

As the school year progresses and exams come around, it’s normal for some students to become overwhelmed with stress. An assembly focused on coping with exam stress can be a great way to remind everyone of how they can better manage their time and emotions during this busy time.

You can also give students a chance to practice breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, visualisation and goal-setting exercises that they can use during their exams.

Finally, emphasise the importance of taking breaks and getting enough rest during this period so your students can be in the best condition to tackle the challenges ahead!

School assemblies – How to make yours powerful and leave a lasting impression

presentation of school assembly

James Handscombe offers his thoughts on how to make the most of your assemblies, and what it takes to keep your audience engaged…

James Handscombe

I walk to school along a chestnut-lined avenue, early sunlight illuminating a crisp autumn morning. I bend down to pick up a prickly green husk and, like schoolboys everywhere, delight in the shiny brown conker that lies within.

Unlike those ubiquitous students, I’m an adult – I am, in fact, 43 and the headmaster – and my ruminations now go beyond the potential for demolishing my friends’ conkers with my new treasure.

I reach the end of my commute as the bells chime the hour, and stroll to the front of the assembly hall where I hold up my glistening prize and explain that the conker is a symbol of hope; that the trees are metaphors for the students, and that the season of autumn itself is a rich source of inspiration both for poets and aspiring scholars.

I tie in the school ethos of high ambition, and round things off with a few cheering words of comfort.

Messages and more

Some of my colleagues have the impression that this is how I prepare assemblies, and I prefer to bask in their admiration rather than setting them right – because it cannot, of course, be the whole story.

That serendipitous finding of the conker and the delivery of the assembly may be the end points of the process, but it’s certainly not the case that everything else took place within a short train journey.

Crafting a powerful assembly takes time. It involves writing 1,500 words in coherent sentences and structured paragraphs so that the listener, without aids to memory or concentration, is at least able to take away the key messages.

This, therefore, is the first characteristic of a powerful assembly – messages that are clearly communicated and rendered memorable.

That said, a great assembly does more than simply hammer home some key messages – it exemplifies the school ethos. It not only tells, but also shows. When sitting in a powerful assembly, you’ll hear described the aspirations of the community, but also see them lived.

Exactly what characteristics the assembly has will thus depend on the ethos of the school in which you work. Using someone else’s assembly as inspiration is wise; downloading and delivering it as written, much less so.

The final characteristic of a great assembly springs from that idea of communicating an ethos, and it’s that every assembly is a teaching opportunity. Students should go away having learned something.

Beyond the curriculum

To achieve these ends, you can deploy personal anecdotes, high culture references, pop culture references, tales from history, stories of inspiring heroes, or warnings from the lives of those for whom ‘hero’ maybe isn’t the right word.

To tie it all together, you can draw on your own ruminations and reflections, the words of your foundational documents or the content of assemblies gone by – this is a team effort, of course, since building an ethos is the work of many speakers .

The idea of showing, rather than simply telling is an extraordinarily powerful one for an assembly writer. We encourage students to use their words cleverly and develop a wide vocabulary. Assemblies give them opportunities to see us doing the same ourselves.

Assemblies also remove us from our expertise pigeonholes. A maths teacher can endorse the interests of the history teacher.

The English teacher can speak to the beauty of maths. They allow us communicate our humanity and tell (suitably Bowdlerised) tales of misspent youth, recount eccentric enthusiasms and share the words and music that make our fragile hearts beat faster.

In an assembly we can pass on the advice and life lessons we long for students to learn, but which simply won’t fit into the timetabled curriculum.

High and low

One of the most challenging decisions you’ll make is how to pitch your cultural allusions. Should you talk about autumn by invoking Axl Rose’s words on the cold ‘November Rain’, or by citing John Keats’ misty and far mellower ode?

My reflection on this is that assemblies are about learning, so we should expose them to things they don’t know. I like to aim just over their heads, with content that will be largely new to them, but which they may have at least heard of, dipped into or been intrigued by.

This way, they should be looking up and lifted by what is offered.

This approach gives you the opportunity to stealthily drop popular culture references into your discussion with the same gravitas and respect you’d afford great writers from centuries past.

It emphasises that the students’ existing culture is valuable, and worthy of engagement and reflection. It also encourages them to listen out for your roguish tricks. They might just be listening carefully for the next sneaky Taylor Swift lyric, but at least they are listening.

Natural bias

Another challenge is that your cultural touchstones will spring from the miniscule part of human experience that is your life thus far. On our own, none of us can ever be as culturally diverse as the schools we serve – a natural bias we would do well to monitor and take active steps to remedy.

Expressing your own character and sharing your culture with students is a real privilege of delivering an assembly, and one we shouldn’t be shy of (Paul Simon and JRR Tolkien are frequent visitors to my scripts).

However, we must also be careful not to give the impression that this is the only culture we’re interested in, or worse, that this is the only culture that has value.

The poetry of Rabindranath Tagore; the novels of James Baldwin; the history of Sudan – all have an equal claim to time and space. Writing an assembly is an opportunity for us to learn something new ourselves, as well as teach.

When approached as a standalone presentation, however, even a truly brilliant assembly will lack power.

An assembly’s greatness comes from its place in a collection, which is why I believe assembly givers should also be listeners, and why the best cultural reference for an assembly is another assembly – ideally one given by someone else.

These cross-references allow assemblies to reinforce and build on each other. They turn ephemeral, individual pieces into a rich and evolving tapestry of shared understanding. They can tap into and develop the ethos of the school, and turn a building into a community.

8 features of powerful assemblies

  • An assembly is made up of stories, references, a big picture ethos and take-home messages – start with one and add the others in
  • Your take-home message must be clear; structure the assembly to make it so
  • You are exemplifying good writing for the students; spend time crafting your sentences and paragraphs
  • Remember that an assembly is another opportunity for pupils to learn something, especially advice and life lessons that won’t fit into the timetabled curriculum
  • Your assembly isn’t just what you say, but how you say it. Make sure you’re in touch with the school ethos and its aspirations
  • Take inspiration from all walks of life, including high culture, pop culture, tales from history, stories of inspiring heroes or warnings from the lives of villains. Ensure these sources are culturally diverse
  • Aim high with your content. Assemblies should expose pupils to things that are new to them, or which they may be somewhat familiar with and would like to explore further
  • Have fun with your assemblies, and be your own, idiosyncratic self – even if this involves a fascination with the fruit of the horse-chestnut

Anchoring Script: School Assembly

Anchoring a school assembly is a significant responsibility. It sets the tone for the event and ensures that the proceedings run smoothly and engagingly. The anchor is the linchpin, the facilitator who guides the audience – students, teachers, and sometimes parents – through the agenda with ease and confidence. Crafting an anchoring script for a school assembly requires understanding the audience, being clear and concise, and injecting a bit of fun to keep the atmosphere lively. In this article, we will delve into the process of writing a script that will make any school assembly an event to remember.

Table of Contents

Understanding the School Assembly

Before putting pen to paper, it is crucial to understand the purpose and theme of the assembly:

  • Purpose : Is the assembly meant to educate, celebrate, or communicate important news?
  • Theme : Is there a specific theme, such as an environmental cause, a cultural celebration, or a holiday?
  • Participants : Who will be speaking or performing at the assembly?
  • Duration : How long will the assembly last, and how many items are on the agenda?

With this information in hand, you can craft a script that is relevant and keeps to the time allocated.

Tips for Writing the Anchoring Script

  • Personalization : Customize your script to reflect the school’s values and the personality of the anchor.
  • Clarity : Use language that is clear, appropriate, and understandable to all age groups present.
  • Brevity : Keep your script concise. The focus should be on the participants, not the anchor.
  • Preparation : Know the background of each segment and any relevant details that may be necessary to include.
  • Flexibility : Be prepared to adapt to any last-minute changes or technical issues.
  • Practice : Rehearse your script to ensure a smooth delivery and to time your segments appropriately.

Engaging the Audience

Engagement is the key to a successful assembly:

  • Interactive Elements : Incorporate polls, questions, or interactive activities to involve the audience.
  • Humor : When appropriate, use light humor to keep the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable.
  • Acknowledgments : Recognize theefforts of teachers, student organizers, and anyone who played a role in putting the assembly together.
  • Call to Action : If the assembly’s purpose is motivational or awareness-raising, encourage students to take action or reflect on the assembly’s message.

Embracing Diversity and Sensitivity

In a diverse school environment, it’s crucial to be inclusive and sensitive:

  • Respectful Language : Always use inclusive language that respects the diverse backgrounds of the students and staff.
  • Cultural Awareness : If the assembly covers cultural topics, make sure to do so with understanding and respect for those cultures.

Keeping It Dynamic

Varying your tone and keeping your delivery dynamic can greatly influence the engagement level of the assembly:

  • Modulate Your Voice : Use changes in pitch and volume to emphasize points and keep the audience’s attention.
  • Body Language : Make use of positive body language to convey enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Audience Cues : Be observant and responsive to the audience’s reactions, adjusting your script as needed.

Final Thoughts

Writing an anchoring script for a school assembly is about more than just following a structure; it’s about creating an atmosphere of learning and community. An effective anchor is one who connects with the audience, facilitates a smooth flow of events, and leaves a lasting impression. By following these guidelines and bringing your unique flair to the role, you can craft a script that not only informs and entertains but also inspires your school community. Remember, the goal of the assembly is to unify, celebrate, and motivate, and as the anchor, you have the power to set that tone.

Bestiality references allegedly made during presentation at Renmark High School

Warning for readers: This article contains graphic language.

The South Australian Department for Education is investigating a presentation delivered to year 9 girls in a regional high school that allegedly referenced bestiality as being accepted by the LGBTQIA+ community.

Female students said teachers at Renmark High School told them to leave their lessons and attend a presentation in a separate classroom.

Students who attended the presentation on March 22 say two staff from the Headspace centre in the neighbouring town of Berri introduced a "third-party" presenter who facilitated an hour-long presentation focused on relationships.

Parents said they were not notified about the presentation, nor was it consented to.

Students said they were left unsupervised for the duration of the presentation.

Student Courtney White, 14, said she felt confused and blindsided by the presentation.

"We had a teacher that told us to grab a chair and sit in front of the board, and then the Headspace people came in and then [the teacher] left, so then we're sitting in front of a board alone with no teachers, just the Headspace people," she said.

"The first slide of the PowerPoint on the board was 'You can see queerly now' and 'No point hiding.'"

A mother wraps her arms around her daughter. Both look solemn.

Girls felt 'really uncomfortable'

Fourteen-year-old Emelia Wundenberg said the presenter was graphic when referencing their own sexual preferences and spoke in sexually explicit terms about growing up and being confused about whether they idolised people of the same gender or wanted to be intimate with them.

Students say they were then given an explanation of the initialism LGBTQIA+, with each word and its meaning displayed on the screen.

"There was a slide for what the 'plus' means, and they just started randomly saying words that no-one knew, like bestiality," Emelia said.

"It was on the board when they were showing what the 'plus' meant."

The students said bestiality was then explained in detail and the presenter seemed to imply it was something practised by people who identified as LGBTQIA+.

"They said [the queer community] just accepts all of it, even though … isn't it illegal?" Emelia said.

As the talk went on multiple girls, including Courtney, began to feel uncomfortable and asked to leave the classroom to "go to the bathroom".

"We're all just sitting there like, 'What the hell? What are we doing here? Why are we learning about animals having sex with humans?'" she said.

"It was really disgusting, it was really uncomfortable."

Emelia said many of those who asked to leave the classroom did not return.

When the ABC sought comment from the presenter a response was sent on the person's behalf asking that reporters refrained from reaching out or naming them in its coverage.

A small, dark-coloured building bearing the lettering "Renmark High School Administration".

'Normal procedure' not followed

Letters seen by the ABC that were sent to parents on behalf of Renmark High School principal Mat Evans stated that the presentation was meant to discuss "respectful relationships".

The letter acknowledged that the school's "normal procedure for notifying parents ahead of specific presentations was not followed".

Mr Evans said the third-party presenter had "been suspended from department schools while the department undertakes an investigation".

"We are undertaking an internal review to ensure that processes around such notifications and procedures with regard to third parties attending at our school are always met," he said.

The ABC contacted the Department for Education, which provided a similar statement and said the presentation was being investigated.

SA education department chief executive Martin Westwell said the presentation was "unacceptable" and "shouldn't have happened".

Speaking with ABC Radio Adelaide on Thursday, Professor Westwell said conversations about sexual health, societal norms, stereotypes and sexuality were normal parts of the Australian curriculum, but the presentation at Renmark High School was not.

"The core idea that students should understand sexuality and other sexualities is, I think, really important — but the way [the presenter] went about it was unacceptable," he said.

"The school has clearly made some mistakes.

"There should have been a teacher in the room when that occurred, but there wasn't and the principal has apologised for that.

"They hadn't reviewed the content.

"There was a few things that went wrong and it ended up with this inappropriate language and a few things being discussed in that session that were just not appropriate."

Support being provided to students

Headspace's national head of clinical leadership Nicola Palfrey said the organisation was aware of concerns raised by members of the Renmark community.

"We take all feedback very seriously and are reviewing how we can support and guide Headspace centres … to ensure presentations they facilitate or deliver are aligned with evidence and best practice and are safe and appropriate for young people," she said.

FocusOne Health Board chair Ian Gartley said the "focus at Headspace Berri, operated under licence by FocusOne Health, is on the mental health and wellbeing of young people".

"We are aware of concerns raised by local members of the Renmark community following a presentation delivered by a lived experience speaker that Headspace Berri facilitated at Renmark High School," he said.

"Our priority right now is ensuring that any young people and their families who may be experiencing distress receive the support they need."

All parties involved in the alleged incident declined to provide the presentation to the ABC.

Following the presentation, a follow-up letter seen by the ABC was sent to parents offering counselling services from the education department, which had arranged a social worker to attend the school to help support affected students.

A teenager and her mother, both dark-haired, stand outside, looking solemn.

Parents express shock and outrage

Parents of students who attended the presentation said it was a poor representation of the queer community and had raised many concerns about the school's protocols for third-party presentations.

"Who vetted this material? Who made sure it was safe for 14- and 15-year-old girls? Some of them are still 13," Emelia's mother Kristy Fyfe said.

"It has done a huge disservice to the [queer] community."

Following the presentation, Courtney's mother Nicki Gaylard removed her three children from Renmark High School.

"My kids are in limbo," she said.

"They're not in an education department at this point.

"I'm not putting them anywhere until I know this won't happen again.

"Under no circumstances should a child in that school ever feel trapped and unsafe without someone with their certificate, meaning a teacher."

The ABC has spoken to five other parents whose children attended the presentation.

They substantiated the two girls' claims.

Two people with short dark hair smiling. They are both wearing dark T-shirts that says "Let's Talk About X".

LGBTQIA+ educators condemn 'slur'

Sexuality educators and LGBTQIA+ inclusion advocates Mel Brush and Eleonora Bertsa-Fuchs conduct consent and queer inclusion training for schools, parents and workplaces via their social enterprise Let's Talk About X.

Both are secondary teachers and Mx Bertsa-Fuchs said queer education was important but should be delivered in a safe and appropriate setting.

"The teachers are the people that these young people have a relationship with, that they are familiar with, that they're comfortable with," Mx Bertsa-Fuchs said.

"When you're in a vulnerable situation, like a respectful relationships workshop or seminar, there should be someone in the room that you are familiar with."

Mx Brush said the alleged use of the word bestiality in the presentation was damaging to the queer community.

"It's pretty shocking to think about that term being thrown around like that, especially given how loaded it is, and for a historical context of the way that it's been used as a slur and to discriminate against LGBT+ people," Mx Brush said.

Penn. School Board Cancels Gay 30 Rock Actor's Anti-Bullying Talk Because of His Political Activism and 'Lifestyle'

"He is proud of his lifestyle and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students,” said Cumberland Valley School District board member Bud Shaffner

Former 30 Rock actor Maulik Pancholy was disinvited from an anti-bullying speaking engagement at a Pennsylvania middle school, per footage from the Cumberland Valley School District's public meeting on Monday, April 15.

Pancholy, who is openly gay , was originally scheduled to give a talk for an anti-bullying assembly at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg, Penn. on May 22.

However, he will not appear at the middle school due to concerns about his political activism and what two school board members referred to as his “lifestyle.” The Cumberland Valley School District unanimously voted to cancel the assembly.

In addition to portraying Alec Baldwin 's overzealous assistant in 30 Rock , Pancholy also voiced Baljeet in Phineas and Ferb . Along with his acting credits, Pancholy, 50, also delivers keynote speeches “on the topic of diversity and inclusion,” according to his website .

“If you research this individual, he labels himself as an activist, he is proud of his lifestyle and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students, at any age,” board member Bud Shaffner said during the meeting.

Another board member, Kelly Potteiger, shared her concerns that the actor would discuss his children’s book The Best at It , which follows a gay Indian American boy. “It’s not discriminating against his lifestyle — that’s his choice,” Potteiger said. “But it’s him speaking about it.”

Shaffner also told TODAY.com that he had concerns the speaker would discuss politics and “go off script,” adding, “Politically motivated discussions belong at home and not in the classroom.”

“A number of board members went to his website and what stuck out to all of us is that he’s a political activist,” said Shaffner.

Cumberland Valley School District spokesperson Tracy Panzer also shared with TODAY.com that Pancholy’s visit was not on the meeting’s original agenda. She explained one board member motioned to rescind the invite, and the board unanimously voted to cancel his speaking engagement.

On Thursday, April 18, Pancholy shared a statement on his Instagram account expressing his appreciation for the public's "outpouring of solidarity, love, and support from the community at Mountain View Middle School."

"When I visit schools, my 'activism' is to let all young people know that they’re seen. To let them know that they matter. When I talk about the characters in my books feeling 'different,' I’m always surprised by how many young people raise their hands – regardless of their identities and backgrounds – wanting to share about the ways in which they, too, feel different," wrote Pancholy.

He also directly addressed the students and wrote: "To each of you: I see you. I appreciate you. You matter. No one can take that away from you."

Following the meeting, former Mountain View Middle School parent, Trisha Comstock, started a Change.org petition to “challenge this narrative by reinstating the assembly with Maulik Pancholy.”

Additionally, some former students have spoken out against the board’s decision to cancel Pancholy’s appearance.

Brooke Ryerson, former student and member of the LGBTQ community, shared she and her mother will be attending the board’s next meeting on May 6 to express their disappointment in the vote. “It was going to be an assembly about empathy and anti-bullying,” the 16-year-old told TODAY.com. “But that doesn’t matter to the board. They want to silence us in any way they can.”

Tony Conte, another former student, shared an open letter to Shaffner on Facebook . He opened up about his experience as a closeted gay teen and revealed that he “considered suicide from time to time.”

“I think that if I had heard from diverse voices like (Pancholy's) in an auditorium setting telling me that it was okay to be different, maybe my middle and high school experience could have been different,” wrote Conte. “A presentation of this sort could have saved a life, like the life of my friend.”

Cumberland Valley school board facing backlash from parents, community after canceling Maulik Pancholy talk

T he Cumberland Valley School District has been thrown into the national spotlight, after a controversial vote by its school board this week.

On April 15, the school board voted unanimously to cancel an anti-bullying assembly scheduled for May 22 at Mountain View Middle School that was to feature "30 Rock" actor and author, Maulik Pancholy, who is gay.

“I thought it was outrageous and very concerning," said Trisha Comstock, a parent who is behind a petition now circulating online , asking the board to reverse its decision. “It clearly sends a message to our staff, our students, and our residents that identify as LGBTQ+, that part of the community, that they’re not welcome, they’re not seen, they’re not respected.”

The reaction from Comstock and others comes after the discussion held by board members on Monday night.

According to the district's superintendent, the event was originally organized and approved by Mountain View's principal.

The topic was not on the original meeting agenda but was brought up by board member Bud Shaffner during the portion in which members are able to discuss additional items for consideration.

“My only question is, do we even have any idea what he’s going to be talking about?" board president, Greg Rausch, asked Shaffner. "I know he’s a homosexual activist and what have you and has written books and things like that but do we even know what he’s going to be talking about?”

Rausch continued, “If we don’t know what he’s going to be talking about, I can’t vote on it and I’m going to object to it because I can’t vote on something just because a person doesn’t have a lifestyle I approve of. I’m not going to sit there and discriminate against an individual because I don’t know what they want to talk about.”

Rausch did end up voting yes, as did the other seven present members.

“If you research this individual, he labels himself as an activist, he is proud of his lifestyle and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students at any age," added Shaffner.

“It’s not discriminating against his lifestyle, that’s his choice, but it’s him speaking about it and it did say that’s not the topic, but that’s what his books are about and he will probably talk about his pathway because he talks about anti-bullying and empathy and inclusion so part of that is his journey as an individual," said board member Kim Potteiger. "And as a self-proclaimed activist, that’s where it gets concerning I think.”

Pancholy has written several children’s books including one which tells the story of a gay Indian American boy coming into his own.

On his website, Pancholy calls himself an “activist.”

“If you just do some basic digging on Mr. Pancholy’s website, you’ll see he’s an activist for anti-bullying which is what we need in our schools," said Comstock.

On Thursday, Pancholy released a public statement on his Instagram regarding the controversial vote.

"On Monday evening, I learned via social media that the school board of the Cumberland Valley School District in Pennsylvania voted 8-0 to cancel my scheduled author visit with the students of Mountain View Middle School due to concerns about my 'activism' and what they called my 'lifestyle.' My heart goes out to the entire Mountain View Middle School community, and particularly to the students."

His statement continues, addressing his books and growing up without a representation of South Asian-American or LGBTQ+ characters in media.

"When I visit schools, my 'activism' is to let all young people know that they're seen. To let them know that they matter. When I talk about the characters in my books feeling 'different,' I'm always surprised by how many young people raise their hands- regardless of their identities and backgrounds- wanting to share about the ways in which they, to, feel different," Pancholy continued.

The statement ended in part with Pancholy addressing the support he's received from Mountain View Middle School, including the petitions, and added that he hopes every single student at MVMS receives the same message of support and love.

“My daughter Brooke is an out-gay student so this hits a little differently in our house and for her," said Valarie Ryerson, another parent in the Cumberland Valley district. "Her first concern because this is who she is was for her other gay friends in the school district and her gay teachers.”

During Monday's discussion, school board members voiced concerns that Pancholy’s talk would creep into what they deemed “political” territory, going against a previously instated policy that bars political events from Cumberland Valley schools.

“We made a conscious decision years ago after the President Trump rally that was here caused so much stuff, that we’d never get involved with that on either side of the political spectrum. I think this falls under that," said board member Matthew Barrick.

In a phone conversation with FOX43 on Thursday, Shaffner denied the decision has anything to do with Pancholy’s sexuality, saying it is about uploading a previous school policy.

"Political activism should not be in our schools, it's not meant for our schools," he said. "It should be left at home to be taken care of by the parents."

Parents aren’t buying it.

“The video speaks for itself," said Valarie Ryerson, another parent in the district. "They said what they said. There’s really no getting away from it.”

“It’s all smoke and mirrors," added Comstock. "If you watch the video, the school board member clearly says ‘He’s a homosexual and he’s proud of his lifestyle.’”

“The women who run and founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving are activists, Mother Theresa was an activist, Golda Meir was an activist, Elie Wiesel was an activist, activist does not equal bad, activist does not equal political agenda," continued Ryerson.

Both women hope the board will reconsider at its next meeting, which is scheduled for May 6.

“I know myself, a lot of other people in the community would welcome with open arms and show grace and empathy to anyone who said, ‘This was a mistake, we have to walk this back,'" said Ryerson.

As of Thursday afternoon, Comstock's petition had garnered more than 2,300 signatures, saying the response has been the "silver lining in a bad situation."

“The board’s decision was not a reflection of the culture in our schools or how our administrators or teachers feel and I think that carries out into the community," she said. "This isn’t how our community feels either.”

The Cumberland Valley School District released a letter on April 18 to faculty, staff and administration expressing direct disappointment felt by the District's Cabinet-level administration regarding the cancellation.

"We believe that Mr. Pancholy's assembly should have been allowed to happen and that all of our staff and students should be proud to be part of a school community that values who they are," CVSD officials wrote in the letter.

In a statement to FOX43, Tracy Panzer, communications specialist for the Cumberland Valley School District said:

" Each year, our principal at Mountain View Middle School works together with staff members to identify award-winning young adult authors to visit with students. In the past, authors have given a presentation as part of a unique educational experience for students.

The visit was not on the board’s original April 15, 2024, agenda. However, during the portion of the meeting in which board members may bring up additional items for consideration, one board member motioned to rescind the invitation to this year’s scheduled visit by author Maulik Pancholy to Mountain View. Ultimately, the board voted not to allow the visit.

The motion made Monday was specifically to cancel the event that was scheduled for May 22 during school hours.

One board member did bring up the possibility of the event being held after school hours, but it's not clear if that idea will go any further.

Pennsylvania school board cancels gay ‘30 Rock’ actor’s anti-bullying talk, citing his ‘lifestyle’

Maulik Pancholy

Openly gay actor Maulik Pancholy was disinvited from speaking at a middle school anti-bullying assembly after concerns were raised about his activism and what two school board members called his “lifestyle.”

Now Pancholy and school district employees are speaking out against the decision, along with parents and students.

Pancholy’s scheduled appearance at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was unanimously cancelled by the district's school board in a public meeting on April 15.

“If you research this individual, he labels himself as an activist, he is proud of his lifestyle and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students at any age,” board member Bud Shaffner said at the meeting.

Pancholy responded on his Instagram on April 18, saying in part:

“When I visit schools, my 'activism’ is to let all young people know that they’re seen. To let them know that they matter. When I talk about the characters in my books feeling 'different,' I’m always surprised by how many young people raise their hands — regardless of their identities and backgrounds — wanting to share about the ways in which they, too, feel different.

“That’s the power of books. They build empathy. I wonder why a school board is so afraid of that?”

Also on April 18, the Cumberland Valley School District's leaders signed a letter expressing their “disappointment” at the school board's vote. The school district leaders are employees, and separate from the elected members of school board.

“While the issue of ‘political activism’ was cited, statements made publicly by individual board members identified Mr. Pancholy's sexual identity as a factor, an identity shared by many members of our school community,” said the letter, signed by Superintendent Mark Blanchard and nine other high-ranking members of the school district administration. “In doing so, Mr. Pancholy's personhood was reduced to a single aspect, and his ability to communicate a message of anti-bullying and hate was discredited.”

Trisha Comstock, a former parent at the school, started a Change.org petition t o reinstate Pancholy's anti-bullying assembly.

“What happened is homophobic. Anyone can go and watch the meeting ,” Comstock tells TODAY.com. “This board is close to causing some real harm.”

Why was Maulik Pancholy disinvited?

Board member Kelly Potteiger raised concerns that Pancholy, 50, would discuss his children’s book “The Best at It,” which is about a gay Indian American boy.

“It’s not discriminating against his lifestyle — that’s his choice,” Potteiger said in the meeting. “But it’s him speaking about it.”

Pancholy played the character Jonathan, Alex Baldwin's devoted assistant, in the sitcom “30 Rock," and also voiced the character Baljeet in “Phineas and Ferb."

Pancholy’s presentation on anti-bullying at Mountain View Middle School was canceled by an 8-0 vote. TODAY.com has reached out to Pancholy for comment.

In his Instagram post, Pancholy said, “It’s been incredibly moving to see the outpouring of solidarity, love, and support from the community at Mountain View Middle School ... I hope that every single student at MVMS is receiving that message of support and love. That you know that regardless of who you are, you belong.”

Brooke Ryerson, an LGBTQ high school sophomore, attended Mountain View Middle School. Ryerson and her mom plan to express their disappointment at the next board meeting on May 6.

“It was going to be an assembly about empathy and anti-bullying,” Ryerson, 16, tells TODAY.com. “But that doesn’t matter to the board. They want to silence us in any way they can.”

The “us” that Ryerson is referring to is the gay community.

“They’re sending that message that they don’t want our identities in the school,” Ryerson says. “I’m lucky that I have such accepting friends and family, but it’s gotta be devastating for the kids who don’t and now feel even more like they’re not wanted somewhere.”

Maulik Pancholy

How the school board decided

According to Pancholy’s website, the award-winning author delivers keynotes on the topic of “diversity and inclusion.” Pancholy is a self-described activist and served on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Shaffner tells TODAY.com in a phone interview that he had concerns that Pancholy would “go off script” and talk about politics.

“Politically motivated discussions belong at home and not in the classroom,” Shaffner says. “A number of board members went to his website and what stuck out to all of us is that he’s a political activist.”

Cumberland Valley School District spokesperson Tracy Panzer tells TODAY.com that the school principal "works together with staff members to identify award-winning young adult authors to visit with students."

Panzer says that Pancholy’s visit was not on the board’s original agenda.

“However ... one board member motioned to rescind the invitation to this year’s scheduled visit by author Maulik Pancholy,” Panzer says. “Ultimately, the board voted not to allow the visit.”

'This ... could have saved a life.'

Tony Conte, a former Mountain View Middle School student, shared an open letter to Shaffner on Facebook . In the post, Conte reflected on his experience as a closeted gay teen and said that he “considered suicide from time to time.”

“Like a lot of ‘different’ kids, I was teased for reasons I didn’t understand, and I had quite a lot of difficulty building friendships and growing into the healthy mindset that it was okay to be a little different,” Conte wrote.

In high school, Conte said he became friends with another “very different kid.”

“Before we could become close, before we could confide our challenges in each other, he hung himself,” Conte wrote.

“I think that if I had heard from diverse voices like (Pancholy's) in an auditorium setting telling me that it was okay to be different, maybe my middle and high school experience could have been different,” he continued. “A presentation of this sort could have saved a life, like the life of my friend.”

According to the The Trevor Project, LGBTQ students at LGBTQ-affirming schools are 30% less likely to be bullied by their peers. Pancholy's work focuses on youth in the AAPI community.

“When I was a kid, I was often made to feel ashamed for just being who I was. I was made to feel ashamed for being Indian. I was made to feel ashamed for being scrawny and little for my age. I was made to feel shame for being gay," Pancholy said in 2015 . "And there were times when I was a kid that I actually felt unsafe for being who I was. And there are times as an adult, where I continue to sometimes feel unsafe for being who I am.”
