Thoughts that are regularly impressed into your subconscious begin to become your reality. It’s essential your entire focus is on the things you genuine desire because if you concentrate on the opposite, they soon emerge like an unwanted item.

3. Be Exact With Your Question

Before your subconscious mind can provide you with the answers or solution to your problem or question, you must be exact with your request. If your question is vague, then you will receive unclear outcomes.

Therefore, be specific which your question and your subconscious mind will assist you to discover the answer. 

To increase your likelihood of success and your subconscious mind understanding precisely what your question is, write in detail. Describe every aspect of your problem and take the time to get deep into why the problem exists.

For example, if I asked my subconscious mind for ideas to make more money, this would be a vague question. However, when I write in detail the exact amount I want, on what day and all the reasons why that money could improve my life then the result will be far greater than just a mere request.

The subconscious will start to attract ideas and thoughts to make it a reality within the time frame. 

4. Take Time Out To Quiet The Mind And Reflect 

Once you’re satisfied with your question and you have provided your subconscious mind with a detailed summary, it’s now time to open the subconscious mind and allow it to accomplish the puzzle.

Take 10 minutes to quiet your mind by using either meditation , relaxing music or binaural beats. The intention is to develop your mind into a theta brain wave, so your subconscious mind is exposed to the suggestions. 

If you fail to quiet your mind, the analytical mind (conscious mind) will attempt and solve the problem. Unfortunately, the reason you can’t resolve the issue is that the conscious mind does not have the answer.

It would be desirable if you turned your analytical mind off and when your mind reaches the theta brain state it’s on longer activated. Then your brain enters a trance state , and your subconscious mind takes control.

5. Exercise Thanks And Gratitude To Activate A Positive Mind

Before you go to sleep, take the opportunity to give thanks and gratitude for everything in your life. When you can focus your mind upon thankfulness, it transforms your thoughts and mindset into positivity.

A grateful attitude attracts more positivity and appreciation towards it. You are enabling the subconscious mind to open up to new possibilities.

In a journal or diary write between ten and twenty things you are grateful for having in your current life. Then concentrate on delivering thanks to your subconscious mind for discovering the answer to your questions.

Your subconscious mind will be listening to your message and will be more inclined to provide the answer faster. Everyone relishes praise, and our subconscious mind is no different. 

6. Listen To Positive Affirmations Throughout Sleep To Influence The Mind

Find a positive affirmation that you can listen to with earphone throughout the night. The subconscious mind doesn’t sleep .

Therefore, you can influence your subconscious mind during these hours with affirmations or hypnosis. Chose affirmation that are in harmony with your questions to the subconscious mind.  

For instance, if you want to make more money listen to abundant and wealth affirmations . If you wish to shift your mindset from negative to positive there are affirmations for that.

Whatever your questions or problems, there will be an affirmation to help. Failing that you can create your own affirmation by recording a statement or combination of declaration that will assist with the answers you desire.

How Does The Answer Appear In Your Mind?

There are two primary methods of receiving the answers to your questions. The result is presented similarly inside your mind through your higher facility intuition, but you may discover the outcomes creatively or unexpectedly.  

Unexpectedly 

The answer might appear in your mind in the form of an image or hunch. You’ll recognise it’s the solution because a strong feeling is attracted to the idea.

Answers like these arrive at any time and when you least expect it or when you are in a situation which can bring meaning to the concept. This is the most common delivery of the answers from your subconscious mind, which is constructed using your intuition. Besides recieving, you must take action when the vision develops.  

An idea or solution which isn’t acted upon burns away and decays because your subconscious mind demands action for the insights it presents.

Moreover, the initial response might be a stepping stone to a more significant result, and when you fail to take the leap, you’ll never be compensated.

If you act on these intuitions and hunches, your subconscious mind grants you with more influential and satisfying opportunities in the future. One exceptional concept can uncover a world of astonishing possibilities.

How Long Does It Take To Receive The Answer?

The larger the harvest you expect, the longer it takes to produce. If the questions you seek the answers to demand substantial amounts of energy your gestation period is greater. 

For example, if your question is “how do I become a millionaire?” the energy required to attract that success is enormous. However, if the question is ” where did I leave my car keys” the requirements are less significant.     

The more abundant the reward, the more extensive the gestational stage must be. Everything inside the universe that begins as a seed, regardless of physical or spiritual, has an inbuilt duration which is necessary for it to grow before it can be harvested.

If your answers don’t arrive when you anticipate it, your gestational period is not complete. Continue to look after your seed and the harvest will come.

Eurekas are hardly ever discovered that deliberately. If a solution is outside of your brain’s familiar experience — which is shaped by your beliefs, culture, and biases — your conscious mind will most likely never find it. An analytical search for a solution can comb through the entire content of your mind’s “known” but not outside of it. Novel answers reside outside of your mind’s known box.

When you allow your brain to integrate new information with existing knowledge on a subconscious level, it can establish new connections and see patterns not obvious to your conscious mind. Creative solutions and ideas are more likely to bubble up from a brain that applies unconscious thought to a problem, rather than going at it in a deliberate approach with your frontal lobe. When your thinking brain is active and inundated with information, it doesn’t have the opportunity to connect concepts or make creative leaps.

Science shows that your brain’s resting-state circuitry, called the default mode network (DMN) — which is activated when you stop thinking about something specific and just veg out — is the best place to park a problem. In the DMN, your brain does some of its best, wisest, and most creative work.

More Information Is Not Always Better

There is an implicit belief in our society that more information is better.  According to economic theory, more information is always better unless the cost of acquiring further information exceeds the anticipated gain from it. Economists do concede and make the exception that more is not always better when the information isn’t free. This rule may work for economics, but in your brain, more information and thinking is not always better, for several reasons.

Your brain doesn’t like too much information.

Research  indicates that people like to have choices when faced with making a decision. However, if they are given too many choices, they feel less happy about their decision and are less satisfied with the decision-making process itself. One study showed that as people received more information, activity increased in the region of the brain responsible for decision-making, problem-solving,  and control of emotions, the prefrontal cortex. However, when the load became too much it was as though a breaker in the brain was tripped and the prefrontal cortex just shut down.

Your working memory is limited.  

Even though the brain can store virtually limitless amounts of information in long-term memory, you can only keep a limited amount of information in short-term (STM) memory at one time. Research shows that the average span is 7.3 for letters and  9.3 for numbers. Information stays in STM  between 15 and 30 seconds.   Then, it is either attended to by working memory or discarded. 

You learn better with spaced sessions than with contiguous practice.

You probably know from experience and science  confirms that your brain performs better if you take in information in chunks with regular breaks rather than trying to cram everything into one long session. Your brain needs downtime to consolidate the incoming information before you can use it effectively. Studies show that napping can improve memory and creative problem-solving .

Why Your Unconscious Brain May Have The Answer

Research suggests that thinking about an issue too methodically is often a detriment to problem-solving because your brain actually blocks potential solutions from registering into consciousness through a phenomenon known as cognitive inhibition .  Basically, your mind tunes out any information it deems not relevant to the issue you are focusing on. But, the answer may reside in that extraneous info.

Mark Beeman Ph.D., a cognitive neuroscientist at Northwestern University, and John Kounios Ph.D.,  a professor of psychology at Drexel University, have been studying problem-solving anbd “Aha moments”. In the report,  The Aha! Moment, The Cognitive Neuroscience of Insight, they write:

A sudden comprehension that solves a problem, reinterprets a situation, explains a joke, or resolves an ambiguous percept is called an insight (i.e., the ‘‘Aha! moment’’). Psychologists have studied insight using behavioral methods for nearly a century. Recently, the tools of cognitive neuroscience have been applied to this phenomenon. A series of studies have used electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the neural correlates of the ‘‘Aha! moment’’ and its antecedents. Although the experience of insight is sudden and can seem disconnected from the immediately preceding thought, these studies show that insight is the culmination of a series of brain states and processes operating at different time scales. Elucidation of these precursors suggests interventional opportunities for the facilitation of insight.”

The article, The Meaning (and Science)  Behind Those Life Changing, Transformation Aha Moments , explained it this way:

‘It’s a bit like trying to look at a dim star,’ Beeman says. ‘You have to turn your head and spy it out of the corner of your eye; if you look at it directly, it disappears.’ In lab experiments, subjects who are given a brainteaser and sleep on the problem or otherwise back away from it are usually more likely to solve it than if they just keep pounding away.”

Timing is critical when it comes to putting your problem-solving subconscious mind to work for you. If you stay in the deliberate mode of thinking too long, you can inhibit possible solutions from emerging.  However, if you back off of a problem too soon, before you have all the puzzle pieces, your brain doesn’t have the information it needs to come up with an answer. The trick is to know how much time to spend concentrating on a problem and when to ease off and let your subconscious brain do the heavy lifting.

The Default Mode Network

Research  shows that there’s a predictable pattern of neurological activity that’s your brain’s go-to state when it’s at rest, not focused on anything in particular, or actively engaging with its environment. This resting state of your brain is called the  default mode network (DMN). Ruminating and worrying take place in the DMN.

Science discovered the DMN using fMRI studies where people were asked to lay in the scanner with no specific thinking assignment. The DMN refers to the “internal mode of cognition,” which is a very abstract concept.  One  study  provided empirical support that the DMN is one of the most abstract networks in your brain.

Research shows that the harder and more cognitively demanding a particular task is, the less the DMN is activated. Decreased activation of the DMN can also be brought about by mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation . Specifically, researchers who examined brain activation during meditation using functional MRI, found decreased activation of regions related to the DMN . The researchers also suggested that meditation training can increase the synchronization of activation between DMN regions that are related to the awareness of the ‘self’.

And Napoleon Hill, when he couldn’t come up with the title for his Book…Think and Grow Rich…went to bed each night instructing his subconscious to come up with the ideal title…and one night…it did exactly that. And the rest is history! 🙂

Being an analytical person, it took me a while to learn the lessons from this article. In the past, I used to dwell on ‘pro’s and con’s’ lists and the like and usually didn’t make the best decisions. Now, I gather as much information as I can, sit with the question in meditation and see what my body or heart tells me, then sleep on it, asking my subconscious to work on it. Then I would have an ‘aha!’ moment sometime later, just like you’ve described.

We’ll never fully understand the mysteries of how our brains work. The more we understand our inability to control the process and work with what is, the better our decisions and lives will be.

SUBCONSCIOUS thought is the brain’s dumb autopilot – the chump behind repetitive tasks, Freudian slips and all the other things we do “without thinking”. That was certainly the prevailing view in the 20th century, but the subconscious has lately gone up in the world. It takes centre stage in creativity, puts the “eureka!” into problem-solving, plays a crucial role in learning and memory, and it’s even better at making tough decisions than rational analysis is ( New Scientist , 1 December 2007, p 42).

It was in the 1980s that the late neuroscientist Benjamin Libet saw a spark of brain activity 300 milliseconds before subjects consciously chose to twitch a finger. We now know the unconscious decision happens even earlier. In 2008, John-Dylan Haynes at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience in Berlin, Germany, found brain activity up to 10 seconds before a conscious decision to move ( Nature Neuroscience , vol 11, p 543 ).

Stanislas Dehaene, director of the Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit at INSERM, France, has elegantly revealed the subtle interplay between subconscious and conscious thought. In his experiment, volunteers saw a word flashed onto a screen, followed almost immediately by a picture, which masks conscious perception of the word. As the time interval between the two increases, the word suddenly pops into consciousness – accompanied by characteristic activity on a brain scan. This usually happened when the interval reached around 50 milliseconds, but when emotional words such as “love” or “fear” were used, it happened a few milliseconds earlier. The subconscious mind carries infinite wisdom and knowledge, accumulated from a lifetime of learning. A myriad of detail that would baffle the conscious mind are stored within the subconscious. When you did not yet know how to speak, your subconscious mind was already absorbing information like a sponge.

By learning how to access the realm of the subconscious, literally any problem can be solved with minimal conscious effort.

Most renown scientists, writers, composers, and historical figures attribute their success to the power of the subconscious. They all maintain that the solutions appeared, not when they were working on the problem consciously, but when they were engaged in some ”mindless” activity. People who frequently tap into the subconscious for answers, know there is no such a thing as impossible.

Accessing Power of The Subconscious

There are a few simple methods that will activate the problem solving wheels of the subconscious mind. Once you know how to use them efficiently, you have the potential to become your own oracle on demand.

Sleeping, walking, painting, playing an instrument; or any kind of physical activity that does not require concentrated thinking, is effective for shutting off the conscious mind. The subconscious is always working – whether you are asleep or awake.

THE TWO METHODS I USE:

1. Ask yourself a question and sleep on it.

This may seem ridiculously simple but works like a charm. Any problem that you think is impossible for you to solve consciously can be left to the subconscious mind to work out, while you’re asleep.

Often the answer appears out of the blue, when we’re not focused on the problem or question consciously. The process, however, is always started by the conscious mind, and then handed over to the subconscious to work out.

Repeating the question is necessary, in order to instill it deep enough into the conscious mind, for the subconscious to take a note of it. The reason why repetition is the mother of all learning, is because it drills it into the subconscious mind. (This is also why addictions are so hard to break).

Think of your conscious mind as the program, and the subconscious as the software. All the rules, behaviors and actions are programmed from the software, but carried out by the program. Your subconscious controls your conscious mind.. unless of course you learn how to harness the power of the subconscious and make it work for you, consciously.

Another point to note when asking your subconscious mind for an answer, is that you need to use willpower. Repeating the question alone will work, eventually, but using the power of your will speed things up considerably. This sends out the message of urgency to your subconscious, letting it know you really need the help.

Whenever I’ve used this method, nearly each time, I’ve received the answer the following day, and frequently through a dream.

2. Spontaneous writing

To use this method all you do is write – without any censorship. Just scribble down all the thoughts, words and associations that come to mind regarding the question. Do not think or process yet – just write. Whatever comes out is fine, do not try to make sense of it yet – just let it stream.

Then, perhaps several hours later or even the next day, review everything you’ve written and derive some meaning out of it. The solution may come from an angle you were not expecting, so keep an open mind.

You may have heard of automatic writing. Spontaneous writing is not that different from automatic writing. Both entail shutting off the conscious mind to invite in the stream of the subconscious.

My late grandmother once wrote an entire book with automatic writing. Somehow she was able to shut off her conscious mind and receive information about distant family lineage, that she had no way of knowing, consciously at least.

When you’ve experienced the power of the subconscious first hand, there is no more reason to be spooked out by this phenomena.

I’ve written some of my best sentences when I wasn’t thinking straight. Most poets and writers who use spontaneous writing or “subconscious writing”, will tell you that it is the only way to come up with a true masterpiece.

Regular journaling is also an effective tool for receiving information from the subconscious. When we journal, we are usually relaxed and not really trying to work out a problem consciously. This is helpful for unleashing the hidden stream of knowledge.

You Already Have the Answer..

Whatever the dilemma you are faced with, know that you already have the answer. All you need to do is draw it out from the subconscious. Most people do not know that they hold this vast storehouse of knowledge within, and therefore do not look to it for answers, at least not consciously.

Once you learn how to use the subconscious mind, your life becomes easier and you are not really that faced when problems arise.

The answer from the subconscious mind may come in a dream, so pay attention to your dreams.

You may also stumble upon the answer “by accident” while working on something menial and unrelated.

By the way, to effectively use the power of the subconscious you must have faith in its existence and abilities.

If you want to know how to get answers from your subconscious mind, the short answer is that you have to make time for it. In this hustle-bustle era, “slowing down” seems counterintuitive to solving challenges, but it’s often the road to intuition and breakthroughs. 

Our impulse is to use logical and systematic thinking to get the desired outcome. We rely on active problem-solving to reclaim work life balance , but logic only carries us so far. We want clarity on a particular issue or to reach a decision, so we attack the problem with our rational mind, like sending Hercules to battle the Hydra.

When we’re feeling stuck, we’re not letting the subconscious mind work out our problems. This article will cover how to use your subconscious mind to have better ideas, become more intuitive, and day design a schedule aligned with your goals. 

It’s All About Connections: How to Get Answers from Your Subconscious Mind

Our subconscious mind endlessly strings together information that is useful for us. Instead of directing our logic with an iron fist, we can step aside and give our brain room to tap into new connections.

Breakthrough thoughts happen when least expected—when we’re relaxed and letting our minds roam free. Just like when pro-athletes rest their bodies after intense training, we have to make time to rest our logic. 

Giving our subconscious mind room to make associations is what unlocks insight, breakthroughs, and epiphanies. By designing a schedule with time built in for mental roaming, we’ll be more creative and better at coming up with ideas for our most pressing challenges.

How to Use Subconscious Mind to Solve Problems

When we’re not performing well in one area, like Work, we tend to double-down and force a solution from our rational mind. Most people have felt that “stuck” feeling when we can’t work out our dilemma. We have to figure this out , we tell ourselves. 

Conversely, when we make time for this subconscious mind, we leave room for the open-ended and get different kinds of questions answered. 

We become open to possibilities that hold the key to our dilemma.

If we’re frequently hitting walls in one area, it’s a sign that we need to shift our focus to another category like Health or Relationships. We cannot always reason out the answers to our challenges using logic. Many times, we need to let our brains rest with the unknown. 

We need to learn how to use the subconscious mind to solve problems. We do this by shutting off our active problem-solving and letting our minds roam. Start with a 30 minute timed interval. Journal or read to give the subconscious space to associate new ideas. Does this a few times a week. 

Designing Pragmatic Schedules With 360 Productivity

Our habit is to throw hail marys hoping that it will work out. We want to create predictable results. It’s not luck or faith that produces results—it’s following a process. 

When we become process-driven, we tap into 360 Productivity , bringing us closer to results that matter deeply. In 360 productivity, we pay attention to the whole picture: health, work, relationships, community, and spirituality. We integrate all of our goals, not compartmentalize them.

We also need to build in time for our subconscious mind to do its thing, just like we’d schedule a date, a meeting, or a haircut. Throw time on the books for mental roaming and stick to it.

Applying Timed Intervals to Other Goals

We apply the same timed interval concepts to each area of 360 Productivity. (Download the free chapter on timed intervals from my book, Get Anything Done) 

Did we do the interval for Work this week? Yes or no? Did we do the interval for Relationships? Yes, or no . Did we complete the interval for Health? Yes, or no . Keep going . Spiritual—did we complete the interval? Yes, or no . And Community, yes or no ? 

Organizing your goals becomes a matter of completing a chain of intervals instead of knocking down Goliath. It’s as simple as 15 or 30 minutes for each. 

We’re converting productivity into electrical charges that are positive or negative. We have data to improve and can become more scientific about our growth. It’s no longer a big FAILURE or SUCCESS attached to our results. It’s a small action completed for a precise amount of time.

We need to narrow our focus by shining light on what matters. In a few hours, we can hit all of these areas of productivity. We can do more than we think, and it doesn’t have to take as much time as we believe. 

Developing a Frequency Around Your Goals

Now that we’re tapping into 360 Productivity, we can view the results of our experiments for what they are—information. What’s next? What we do with that information is critical to our following actions. 

Select a weekly interval and frequency for the remaining goal channels. Remember, the frequency doesn’t have to be every day. Think of the entire week: once, twice, three times, or daily. The point is carving out time for activities that reinforce our goal channels.

If we look at our actions, we think that being productive means paying attention to the most urgent areas like Work. We don’t make as much time for goal channels we know are necessary but are not urgent. We say we’ll make time after we handle this situation or project. 

Let’s take Spiritual as an example. It can cover many areas: mediation, journaling, reading, which are activities that allow the subconscious mind to mull over the events of the day. When we go back to the area that may be causing us significant challenges, we will have insight that we didn’t have before. 

Schedule Subconscious Problem Solving

We feel fantastic about decisions, and we congratulate ourselves for making the right call. But what led us there? Was it one decision that we made— we pulled the trigger and were off —or was it a chain of events influenced by associations? 

Our goal channels are interconnected—when we are productive in one area, it influences the others. We think that our decisions are a matter of choice, but our subconscious mind draws associations to create new answers or solutions to our problems. Letting our subconscious mind roam creates space for intuition.

Build time in your schedule for activities that activate your subconscious. The solution to that big problem at work could be one morning walk or journaling sessions away. Explore the unknown and let your subconscious work through connecting new ideas.

Have you ever been stuck on a problem? Have you experienced your mind running in endless circles, unable to find an answer? If you've felt yourself mired in an apparently unsolvable problem, you're not alone. At one time or another, everyone has been stuck in a rut, defeated by old mental concepts, rigid belief systems, and toxic conditioning or habits. Any of these can keep you in arm's reach from a solution.

Fortunately, your mind has a potent ally: The ability of mindfulness to help you tap new and fresh ideas.

Before I explain three great mindfulness strategies for opening the doors of the mind, I'd like to share a quote that I read recently.

"The infinite library of the universe is in your own mind." — Vivekananda, teacher

How wonderful to think that the mind can access an infinite library of possibilities. As you'll see, anyone can overcome those fixed mindsets and limiting beliefs that cause conflict, fatigue and burnout .

Here are three key mindfulness strategies to tap the infinite library of your mind and get creative.

1. Open Your Mindset and Let Go a Belief in Limitations.

A belief in limits, for example, can make it hard to find novel ways to approach almost anything. One famous example of a fixed limit long held to be true was that “it’s physically impossible for a human being to run the mile in under four minutes,” (a widely held belief until Roger Bannister did otherwise).

Let's look at an example of a pre-cognitive, or fixed, mindset. Mindfulness researcher Ellen J. Langer once conducted a study, as described in the book Mindfulness , in which a woman pretended to have sprained her knee, just outside a pharmacy. When passers-by stopped to help, the woman asked if that person could go into the pharmacy and get her an Ace Bandage. The pharmacy, which was in on the study, had removed all the Ace Bandage branded items. There were still bandages available, but no Ace Bandages. Most people came out of the store empty-handed because they were fixed on the pre-cognitive mindset of thinking that only an Ace Bandage would do the job. That's why one of the hallmarks of mindlessness is being unable to be adaptable and creative.

Creative Strategy for Breaking Out of Fixed Mindsets: Ask New Questions

One example of an unwillingness to see things differently is typified by the worn phrase, “we’ve always done things this way.” A mindfulness approach, however, asks: Why have we always done it this way? Sometimes, just thinking of new questions offers a new approach.

2. Change Your Context and Take a Break

Research shows that subjects in a study who took breaks generated significantly more creative ideas than those who worked continuously. This means take a pause from trying to get a solution. Take lunch away from your desk, and allow your mind to work unconsciously and open up to what your conscious mind can't see.

A shift in context can also be thought of as how we perceive our work. For example, reexamining the type of role you play in terms of how your job benefits society could facilitate recognizing ways to change responsibilities within a business structure or even to switch careers if need be.

Creative Strategy : Change Your Location and Context

Go sit in nature, take a walk, have your lunch in a new location, take a mental break by doing something you enjoy, and let the problem go. Don't worry ... your unconscious mind will still be looking for unique solutions.

3. Harness the Power of Curiosity

When work or relationships feels stale or caught in a cycle of reactivity, what can you do? If you have some fixed expectation about how an employee, partner or others in your life "should" behave, try applying curiosity to the situation. You can get curious instead of getting angry! Imagine how that can shift a relationship. Not surprisingly, it was Einstein who advised, "Never lose a holy curiosity. "

Curiosity is very much used in mindfulness to shift out of one's personal perspective in order to explore a larger viewpoint. With curiosity, you can be more open and alert in the moment. Curiosity has even been used to help those with addiction learn to observe how their cravings change over time.

Creative Strategy : Get Curious About the Situation, Person, or Problem

When you get curious about something you immediately change your stance toward it. You can be more open and understanding as you inquire about why someone behaves as they do. After all, each of us does things that others do not understand! Curiosity also means allowing and accepting . This is an important way of showing respect and regard for others. Keep in mind that as you change your reaction to curiosity, it will change how others respond.

In one sense, we can be grateful for our problems because they can lead us to the doorway through which we can find creative solutions and mindful opportunities. 11 Ways to Get Answers From Your Subconscious Mind

What happens when we die? What is our purpose on this planet? What is consciousness, time, space, the universe?

Your subconscious mind may have the answer to that . It may also be able to solve real-life issues in the fastest, most practical, most efficient way.

So whether you are a dreamer, a curious philosopher, or simply a life hacker — you can tap into the power of your subconscious and get (almost) all the answers you look for.

Ever worked on a problem for a while and found that the rational, logical mind just wouldn’t find a solution, at least not one that was acceptable to you?

And then all of a sudden saw a brilliant idea that literally appeared out of nowhere? If it wasn’t the conscious mind, then where did the idea come from?

Power of the subconscious mind

Throughout the centuries, philosophers and mystics have argued that there is a separate world, or reality, in which everything already exists.

According to this theory, then, the material (tangible) world would be nothing but a temporary, ever-changing manifestation of the infinite (intangible) world of ideas.

Plato in particular was fascinated by this concept and was one of the first philosophers to actually study it and offer proof of it.

Plato thought that the only “real” world is the world of ideas, or forms, which is separate from the ever-changing world we experience as human beings.

However, the immense power of our mind lies in the fact that the mind is able to connect to that infinite world of ideas, at will or subconsciously, and “manifest” those in the physical realm.

I’m sure Plato had no notion of manifestation , the law of attraction, or any of that — it’s just interesting to see how some New Age concepts are similar to 2,500 year-old philosophy.

Answers from a different world

The trick, then, is to develop the ability to connect to that world of ideas and solutions, for example through imagination, creativity, and visualization .

However, the conscious mind can only imagine certain things — it is limited to the five senses and pre-existing notions and ideas, as well as the concept of what is possible or impossible.

Eventually, the conscious loosens its grip and lets go of control, and the heart gets to speak. This is usually when the magic happens, when genius is born.

Meditation, lucid dreaming, long walks in nature, daydreaming, or even just your own intuitions when you are about to fall asleep. What do all these have in common?

Primarily, relaxation — that is, the act of silencing the rational mind and its need to be in control, so that a more mysterious (but equally resourceful) part of you can arise.

In other words, so that the conscious mind can fall asleep and allow the subconscious mind to do the work undisturbed.

It’s not easy, though. The logical mind generally doesn’t like to let go — it sees letting go as a threat. This is why conscious and subconscious often conflict with each other.

How to get answers from the subconscious mind

By taking the time to cultivate some or all of the following practices, you will develop the habit of tapping into your subconscious.

The more often you do this, the bigger the changes in your life — both in terms of problem solving and a better life overall (better physical and mental health).

To get answers from the subconscious part of you…

1. Try energy therapy

For example, flower essences, reiki, crystals, or sound baths. Don’t automatically assume they don’t work because they can literally change your life (nothing is ever guaranteed and what works for others may not work for you, obviously).

Flower essences in particular are thought to affect the subconscious mind in such a way that your behavior, thoughts, and outlook on life changes and guides you toward the best version of yourself and the best solutions to your current issues.

2. Use drawings and symbols

Let’s go back to Plato’s theory of forms and the idea that the intangible world of ideas creates the material world, and not the other way around. To connect to that world, you want to use its own symbols .

That is, images that are as close as possible to the original idea. For example, if you want freedom of success, let go of the words “freedom” and “success” because they are artificial. Instead, visualize, draw, and focus on their symbols e.g. a clear sky or a mountaintop.

3. Remove all distractions

Easier said than done — can you turn off your smartphone, sit alone in silence, and actually do nothing in particular? But once you remove all distractions, you may be amazed at what your subconscious mind can come up with.

Essentially, by removing mindless distractions you preserve energy in your mind; the mind’s energy turns inward because it no longer finds external distractions. You’ve probably experienced this more than once when you are about to fall asleep at night.

4. Record your dreams

Among all phenomena that are deemed pseudoscience, precognitive dreams have to be the most undeniable. Precognitive dreams are, in Jung’s words, a type of synchronicity that we all experience from time to time. And the more we pay attention, the more we notice it.

However, dreams don’t have to be precognitions to be valuable. The world of your dreams is like a fascinating amalgam of elements from past and future, and real and imaginary — once you record them, e.g. in a journal, you will be amazed at the things dreams show you.

5. Spend time in nature

As human beings, we seem to perform better when we spend time in our natural environment. Not necessarily in terms of physical work, but more in terms of imagination, problem solving, creativity, and anything that has to do with the subconscious.

The fifth way to allow your subconscious to guide you is to simply spend time in nature — go for long walks, stargaze, observe the natural world around you and its details and what they communicate. As Rumi wrote: “there is a voice that doesn’t use words”.

6. Let go of limiting beliefs

Often, solutions or ideas offered by the subconscious mind are totally obvious. The issue is simply the conscious mind and its tendency to fall into the trap of limiting beliefs, societal expectations, or assumptions in terms of possible and impossible.

So whenever you catch yourself thinking that something is “too good to be true”, or “possible only in theory”, or even “wrong”, do think twice because sometimes these words aren’t yours , but society’s, and society isn’t always right.

7. Pretend to be someone else

Here’s another interesting exercise — identify a character that’s the embodiment of the life you want to live, e.g. a life in which all your current problems no longer exist and you get to realize your full potential, physically and emotionally.

Literally live and act “as if”, at first as an exercise, later subconsciously. After a while, the subconscious will surrender and assume you are that character. Tip: try not to think of someone else — just a different version of yourself.

8. Write down the question

If you were to actively record and write down all your thoughts, in order, you would find that your mind is a very messy place. In any given hour, you may experience hundreds of thoughts in the form of memories, ideas, images, or even pure randomness and chaos.

The trick is to force the mind to pay attention to only some of your thoughts . This actually works for both the conscious and the subconscious. The easiest way to do this is to write down what you want, as specifically and accurately as possible.

9. Notice everything around you

When given a task, the subconscious mind will work 24/7. The conscious may take a break when you sleep, daydream, or relax, but the subconscious won’t stop. This is why the function of your heart, lungs, or other organs is controlled by the subconscious.

Because the subconscious is always at work, it uses any thoughts and images you feed it. Pay attention to things around you; notice all the subtle details . Ask: why did this happen, and how? See how things are interconnected.

What comes after is always linked by a tie or affinity to what came before (…). And as existing realities are harmoniously co-ordinated, so also things coming into being display no mere succession but a wonderful interrelationship. Marcus Aurelius

10. Forget about the question

What is it that you are trying to find a solution, or an answer for? What issue or question do you keep dwelling on? The tenth way to make your subconscious mind work for you is, paradoxically, to forget about the question in the first place.

Why? Because chances are the question comes with a significant amount of tension and stress. We’ve already seen how meditative states of relaxation can make the subconscious emerge. Remove the question, remove the stress, allow relaxation. Which leads us to number 11…

11. Take time off and travel

Seriously, if anything else fails, just take a break , and enjoy life. All kinds of good things happen to people when they are on holiday, especially if somewhere new; not just physically but mentally as well.

The main reason we feel refreshed and full of energy after a holiday isn’t physical relaxation but rather a different perspective . During our holiday or time off, we (subconsciously) experience the world from a different perspective. In turn, that gives us the power to be “new”.

Final thoughts

Some of the most mind-blowing scientific discoveries as well as some of the most wonderful works of art came to man suddenly, out of nowhere; many artists and scientists including Einstein could not explain why they thought what they thought.

Guess what — the same can happen to you if you allow your mind to do the work for you. You may not discover the relativity of space and time, or paint portraits as sublime and mysterious as the Mona Lisa.

But you’ll discover very interesting things. Most importantly, you’ll discover your own answers to your own questions. Alone.

You don’t need to read a thousand books. You don’t need to ask anyone else. Your mind is the most complex machine in the universe — use it. And trust it.

Three Ways to Get Your Subconscious to Help You Solve Problems

Your subconscious is a powerful problem solver.

But it stays quiet while your conscious mind is engaged. Sometimes the answer to a difficult problem comes to you out of nowhere. It just seems to appear in your mind. This is the subconscious giving you the answer.

Here is how you can tap into your subconscious more regularly.

Go to sleep.

You may have heard the expression, “You need to sleep on it,” when it comes to a hard problem.

Sleeping puts the conscious mind to the side and the subconscious takes over. It works thru the problems you have been keeping in your mind. Often I have worked on a problem for hours, go to sleep and almost instantly when I look at it again the next day I see the solution.

When you are facing a difficult problem, make sure you get a good night’s sleep for your best chance at solving it.

Go for a walk with no distractions.

The key here is no distractions.

Ideally this would be a walk thru nature. This takes you away from the stress and pressure that is keeping your mind from being creative. It is important that you do not engage your conscious mind and allow it to rest. No phone, no music with words, just good breathing and walking.

Something about a nice walk lets you access better problem solving.

I am not talking about the “clear your mind of thoughts” kind of meditation.

We are not going for spiritual enlightenment. We are trying to access the problem solving power and speed of our subconscious. The best way I have heard it described was by Tom Bilyeu saying it was like “hanging your body in the closet” while letting your subconscious work.

The idea is to sit with your eyes closed in a quiet or white noise filled room and let your mind sift thru the thoughts cluttering it. If you have not engaged in a meditation practice regularly this may take some time to become effective.

I recommend the method described in the book “Stress Less Accomplish More” by Emily Fletcher.

What if there were a tool that you could use to solve problems, come up with unexpected solutions and drive creativity? What if I told you it will cost you nothing and requires very little effort to use? The subconscious mind is an incredibly powerful tool but few take advantage of it. Your subconscious works throughout the day when you are both awake and asleep but takes over entirely when you sleep. Free from the interference of daily life and external stimuli, at night your subconscious mind has nearly all the resources of your brain at its disposal. With the subconscious mind dominating such a large portion of your life, you need to put it to work. Thomas Edison once stated, "Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious." Here's how to make that request:

  • Get a journal , or prep a notes app on your phone. Hand writing in a physical paper journal can have a more substantial memory recall effect versus a digital diary.
  • Before going to sleep, take a few minutes to think about and write down the things that you want to accomplish.
  • Ask yourself questions about your goals and how to achieve them. What's stopping you from moving forward?
  • Develop a few very specific questions and write them down.
  • Lock these in by repeating and rereading them and consciously making the request to solve them to your subconscious.

While sleeping, your subconscious mind will get to work, approaching the problems from a variety of angles and making connections that may hold the answers to your problems. Upon waking:

  • Grab your journal or notes app, and "thought dump" from your subconscious mind. Write your thoughts and feelings freely. Don't hold anything back, no matter how crazy or irrelevant it may seem.
  • Write down your dreams, they may hold the answers you were looking for.
  • Page back to the questions you wrote down the night before and write down your answers.

A few hours after you write everything down, look back at your notes again and try to derive some meaning out of them. You may find clarity and insights that may have been more difficult to discover while awake. Thanks to your subconscious mind, you'll have some new angles from which you can pursue the solutions you've been seeking. When you are faced with a dilemma, know that you already have the solution within you. All that you need to do is draw it from your subconscious mind. Once you learn how to unlock the power of your subconscious mind, you'll have a powerful tool ready to go to work while you rest and recover. Using the thought-dumping method, you can improve your ability to solve problems and better utilize the time that you spend peacefully sleeping.

There are many tools available to help facilitate the above. A simple wellness journal may help you keep up with this excellent habit a bit more effortlessly. Be sure to place it somewhere prominent (such as on your pillow) so that you can't ignore it before bed time!

The Quiet Laborer: The subconscious mind, a reservoir of untamed creativity, is perpetually at work, even when we are not consciously focused on a task. Its operations are akin to an underground river, subtly shaping the landscape of our thoughts and solutions. Be it during conscious problem-solving sessions or during restful sleep, the subconscious is ceaselessly sifting through vast amounts of information, making connections, and forging novel pathways.

The Default Mode Network (DMN) : The default mode network is a network of brain regions that becomes active when the mind is at rest and not focused on the external environment. It’s been suggested that the DMN is involved in introspection, self-awareness, and also in processes like memory consolidation and idea generation. While there’s still much to learn about the DMN’s exact role, it’s thought to be a key player in the subconscious processing that happens during idle moments.

Subconscious Worker

Research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience has shown that the brain is constantly processing information, even when we’re not consciously aware of it. Unconscious processes can involve pattern recognition, memory retrieval, and forming associations between seemingly unrelated concepts. This can contribute to problem-solving by allowing the brain to work on challenges even when we’re not actively thinking about them.

One example in my personal life: I go on daily walks and I’ve had the habit of wearing headphones to listen to a podcast while I walk. Although this practice has been entertaining and informative, I heard in one of these podcasts about how allowing the mind to wander is one of the best ways to allow the subconscious to do its work for you. Although it wasn’t suggested in the podcast, I decided to stop wearing earbuds while on walks to allow my mind to freely wander. Although it’s impossible to quantify how this has affected my work, I can’t deny a greater sense of calm and decisiveness about the challenges facing me at work.

Subconscious Symbiosis – Awake and Asleep: The subconscious is a dedicated collaborator, engaging both during wakefulness and sleep. While awake, it assumes a quieter role, often slipping ingenious ideas into our consciousness seemingly out of the blue. This is aptly demonstrated by the ‘Eureka!’ moments that arise seemingly spontaneously after a period of contemplation. During sleep, especially during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the subconscious ventures into a more unfettered territory. Dreams, often thought of as random escapades, might in fact be the mind’s way of processing complex issues and presenting solutions. The renowned chemist Dmitri Mendeleev famously attributed the organization of the periodic table to a dream-inspired revelation.

As Steve Calechman describes this process in his article “ Sleep to solve a problem ” (HBR). As it turns out, all of those nights you’ve spent staying up late to solve a problem may have worked against you. With a good night’s sleep, we often wake up with a greater amount of clarity around our complex problems.

Stress – The Subconscious Suppressor

However, the harmonious symphony of the subconscious can be disrupted by the dissonance of work-related stress. Stress has an uncanny ability to permeate the layers of the mind, erecting barriers that limit the subconscious’s creative contributions. As the mind becomes consumed by stress, the flow of imaginative insights dwindles. The incessant worry and apprehension characteristic of stress cast a shadow over the fertile grounds of subconscious idea generation.

“ Trust Deficit” – A Consequence of Stress: One of the most insidious effects of prolonged work-related stress is the erosion of trust in one’s own subconscious. The heightened tension and pressure foster an environment where self-doubt flourishes. The once-reliable subconscious is viewed with skepticism, as its offerings seem feeble in the face of mounting stress. This erosion of trust stifles the intuitive leaps and unconventional thinking that are the hallmarks of subconscious-driven creativity. When stress makes us doubt our intuitions, we become indecisive and we lose passion for what we are doing.

When I quit my job in 2021, I had years of backed up subconscious work to access and 2 years later I’m still feeling behind on 20 years of lost subconscious work due to immense work stress.

Brain Pieces of the Puzzle Solution

The subconscious mind, a silent architect of creativity, remains vigilant even as we navigate the demands of consciousness. Its contributions, invaluable in generating innovative solutions, are however vulnerable to the corrosive influence of work-related stress. The erosion of trust in the subconscious, a consequence of prolonged stress, leaves a lasting mark on the trajectory of creativity. The journey of one individual serves as a microcosm of this phenomenon, with years of untapped subconscious potential unfurling after liberation from stress. The concept of subconscious debt offers a new lens through which to view the impact of stress on creativity, underlining the significance of safeguarding the subconscious’s contributions for a more innovative and harmonious creative existence.

Command Your Subconscious Mind to Solve Problems

Sometimes after you have studied a problem from all angles, it seems even worse or more jumbled than before . When you leave it for awhile by temporary forgetfulness, and then when you get back to it, you find your thoughts clarified, the line of reasoning worked out and your problem solved for you. Everyone experiences this from time to time but it is often produced in an unconscious manner without purpose and intent. You have more power when you learn to use your subconscious in a conscious way .

Get an idea of what you really want to know by forming a clear mental image of the question you wish answered . Give it a high degree of conscious attention by playing around with it in your mind and pondering upon the matter. Then pass it to your subconscious mind with the mental command “Attend to this for me, work out the answer!” or some similar order . This command may be issued mentally or verbally. Command your subconscious like people who work for you. Command kindly but with firmness. Firmly command your subconscious mind to do the work, and then forget all about the matter. Throw it off your conscious mind and attend to your other tasks . In due time the answer will come flashed into your consciousness. It may not come until the very minute that you must make a decision upon the matter, or at a time when you need the information . There are mental processes at work for your benefit. When they have worked out the problem for you, they push it into your plane of awareness for its use.

It is best to do as much conscious work on the problem before passing it to the subconscious to work on . Fill your mind with every bit of information that you can obtain regarding the problem. Then relax and let your mind dwell upon the problem for a moment without worrying or fretting, but in a calm and tranquil way. Then turn it over to your subconscious mind with the command to “Work this out for me!” and utterly relax. When you relax, you drop away your resistance to allow the answer to be worked .

You can even go to sleep if you want. There are many solutions that come when a person goes to sleep . God created woman when man was asleep. When you’re asleep other thoughts are kept from obtruding upon your consciousness. That is the time when the divine can do the work unhindered . Whatever thought or problem you can get across to your subconscious mind at the moment of dropping off to sleep, your subconscious mind will fork out for you. Then when you awaken, you will have the answer.

Of course, not everyone can succeed in getting the right thought across to the subconscious at the first or the second attempt. It requires understanding and faith , just as the working out of problems in mathematics requires an understanding of and faith in the principles of mathematics. But keep on trying, and you will do it. And when you do, the results are sure. What you are doing here is applying universal laws through conscious creation . The more you use your power the greater your power will become.

Your subconscious mind is part of the universal mind. You can think of the universal mind as the combination of all subconscious minds in existence and even the mind of the divine . Thought is man’s connecting link with the universal mind. Thought is the pathway of intention and inspiration. Through the conscious act of thinking, you can tap into the intelligence of other beings or higher entities . The answer will come along through your thinking and it seems you thought it out when it actually was given you.

Somewhere in the universal mind there exists the correct solution to every problem. It does not matter how stupid, complicated or simple a problem may appear to be. The right solution always exists in the universal mind . All problems are problems of the mind, and therefore all solutions are found within the mind. Whatever you need to know, you can know if you seek the help of the universal mind and receive inspiration from it. Keep on seeking and you find there is no problem that exists that cannot be solved .

Whenever you have any need or experience any difficulty, close your eyes for a moment and realize that the universal mind knows how the need can best be met. Put your problem to your subconscious mind with the belief that it will find the solution . Then forget it for awhile, and when the time comes the need will be met . This is the key of letting go and letting God. There are times when you do not need many solutions because the one solution before you is all you need, and is the best one provided now.

The longer an electric current is made to flow through a filament of oxide of magnesium, the greater the conductivity of the filament became. In the same way, the more you call upon and use your subconscious mind, the greater its conductivity becomes in passing along the infinite resources of the universal mind . The greatest man and women in the world are simply those who have increased conductivity with the universal mind through constant use of their subconscious mind in everything they work on .

The Wisdom of Solomon, the skill of Michael Angelo, the genius of Edison, the daring of Napoleon, all may be yours. It is up to you only to form the contact with Universal Mind in order to draw from it what you will . Think of this power as something that you can connect with any time. It has the answer to all of your problems. It offers you freedom from fear, from worry, from sickness, from accident. No man and nothing can interfere with your use of this power or diminish your share of it . No one but yourself.

Subconscious directions may be more effective than affirmations . You can direct your subconscious mind to go about making an affirmation come true. The subconscious is actually your Inner Being or an aspect of it. You can communicate with it by personifying it in your imagination . You can talk to it as though it is a person. After all, it is consciousness interacting with consciousness. Your subconscious mind is like a mental computer that goes about working on tasks that you program into it.

Influencing the subconscious mind used to live on the fringes. Only since around 2005 did it move to a serious realm of study. For instance, emotional intelligence, an 80’s creation, does not address it.

Distracting the conscious mind and making an emotional appeal are two key aspects of influencing the subconscious mind.

Influencing the subconscious mind in others has two basic aspects: a conscious distraction and an emotional appeal.

How The Subconscious Works

In order to influence the subconscious, it helps to know how it works. In simple terms, something triggers an emotion. The conscious mind though does not detect this. At that time, or later, the emotion surfaces. This forces the conscious to form a thought . However, it does not know what triggered it. It might come up with an idea . It’s almost always wrong.

Take a wobbly table . It triggers emotions of instability subconsciously in those who sit at it. These surface though on a conscious level as a need to seek stability. So, if the topic at hand were investing, the person would make more conservative decisions than normally.

Influencing The Subconscious Mind

This same case study, the wobbly table, shows the first two steps to using this influencing. The first is that people can’t be aware of it. At minimum they need to discount it. Thus, the first step is distracting the conscious mind.

Many times this is easy. Very few would think that a table could affect their decisions this way. On the other hand, take relationship building tips. They influence subconsciously too. People though are more aware of these and how they impact decisions. “She was so nice. I just had to buy something.”

The second step almost always involves the trigger of emotions . This can be an object, such as the table. It can be an idea, an event or a situation. Words and pictures do it too . Saying, “It’s a rule,” will cause people to question it less.

So, take the relational tips. Since people know their influence, it’s about getting them to forget them. That means distraction. It’s done by getting them to focus on the topic at hand. Their focus won’t be on what you’re doing. The conscious mind can focus only so much.

This influence exists all around us. Stories and ambiance affect the taste of food . Placebos are other common ones. High pressure sales tactics are another. Still, the reason why they work is that people don’t believe they work on them.
