The base of knowledge for public health comes from a variety of disciplines, ranging from social sciences to biological sciences and business, brought together by a commitment to improve the public’s health. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is granted in recognition of high attainment in a specified field of knowledge. It is a research degree and is not conferred solely upon the earning of credit or the completion of courses. It is granted after the student has shown proficiency and distinctive achievement in a specific field, has demonstrated the ability to do original, independent investigation, and has presented these findings with a high degree of literary skill in a dissertation. The mission of the programs of study for the Doctor of Philosophy degree is to prepare public health professionals to make substantive contributions to public health inquiry and practice.

Qualifying Exam

When all required coursework is satisfactorily completed (including tools of research and prerequisites), the student must pass a comprehensive qualifying examination covering the subject matter in the major and related fields.  The concentration will set the specific criteria.

The format and duration of the qualifying exam is the responsibility of the Doctoral Supervisory Committee following consultation with the student and consistent with concentration, college, and university guidelines.

The Doctoral Supervisory Committee will review the exam and determine the outcome.  No more than two attempts will be allowed for the student to take the qualifying exam and earn a Pass.  If the student receives a Fail on the qualifying exam on the first attempt and the Doctoral Supervisory Committee recommends that the student complete remedial work, the second attempt at the qualifying exam must be initiated within three- months of completion of remedial work.  If the student earns a Fail on the first attempt, and the Committee determines that no remedial work is needed, the student will have a second attempt to pass which must be initiated within three months.  If the student does not earn a Pass on the qualifying exam on his/her second attempt, the student will not be admitted into doctoral candidacy.  After successful completion of the qualifying exam and appropriate paperwork is submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies, the student is admitted to candidacy and may register for dissertation hours.

Master's Student: FSU's graduate social work program is competitive & includes several experiential learning opportunities for online students. FSU ensures that online work does not equate to a compromise in education. The professors often include up-to-date lectures and utilize video forums for peer discussions which allows for a different modality of class engagement when synchronous learning is not possible. Additionally, the classes that I have enrolled in have encouraged me to critically analyze the field of social work and even the coursework being taught. I feel challenged in classes while also optimistic that students are encouraged to creatively problem-solve the field's current dilemmas. With the practical experience provided throughout the program it is important for students to consider their motivating influences for becoming a social worker which often includes forms of policy change. FSU offers an academic platform for students to explore such ideas via diverse coursework. ... Read 11 reviews

Master's Student: Have not yet started the graduate program (starts Fall 2024) but through previous enrollment with UNF and Brooks College of Health, the staff and instructors are wonderful. Supportive and eager to see students succeed. They will work just as hard at getting a student where they want to be as much as the student does. Of course they've had their moments where things have "slipped through the cracks" and something was missed, but once pointed out they work quickly to correct it and rectify the situation. ... Applications for the JPHCOPH graduate programs are accepted for  FALL  admission only.  Applications and ALL supporting documents must be in SOPHAS no later than the  JPHCOPH Application Deadline  to be considered for admission .   It is highly recommended that your application and all supporting documents be received by SOPHAS  at least four (4) weeks  prior to the JPHCOPH application deadline date.

What does it mean to be verified in SOPHAS? Verification in SOPHAS is the process used to ensure all of an applicant’s coursework was entered correctly and consistently. This standardization is achieved by using the applicant’s coursework to create a standard set of GPAs, ensuring they are compared to other applicants fairly and equally. Several things happen during verification including comparing all components of coursework to the official transcripts received. Each course entered in the transcript entry section is placed under a specific course subject category, and each grade entered is converted to a CAS grade value. Then, GPAs are calculated using the converted grade values. Lastly, degrees are authenticated. Once verification is completed, the applicant’s application status will move from Complete to Verified. An application will not be processed until it is verified and all supporting documents have been received in SOPHAS.

Important: Your application will be marked as incomplete and will not be considered for admission if any of the supporting documents are not in SOPHAS by the deadline date.

  • February 1st Deadline

Application Timeline

It is highly recommended that you request official transcripts/foreign evaluations, test scores, and reference letters at least eight (8) weeks prior to the JPHCOPH application deadline date as this is essential to the verification process. Keep in mind that it takes 7-10 business days from the date of receipt to post transcripts and official test scores to your application. Evaluations or Letters of Recommendation are immediately updated once received from your recommender. Please refer to the timeline in the SOPHAS Quick Start Guide .

  • SOPHAS Timeline – To ensure your application is mailed (sent) to JPHCOPH on time, all materials should be received by SOPHAS at least four (4) weeks prior to the JPHCOPH application deadline date. Once your application is considered complete, it can take up to four (4) weeks to be processed and verified by SOPHAS.
  • Georgia Southern University Timeline – Review of all application will begin immediately after the deadline by the DrPH Admissions committee. Applicants passing an initial review will be notified to schedule a virtual or in-person interview. After all interviews have been completed, decisions will be made and promptly communicated to applicants.
  • Wait List – Applicants may be placed on a waitlist to be considered for admission later in the admissions review cycle. In this case, the applicant will be notified by email and offered the opportunity to remain on the waitlist or to be removed from the applicant pool. Waitlist candidates will receive information regarding their updated status on or before May 1 .
