To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Developing physics models of accelerators and beams using standard simulation tools, including polarization and resonant extraction
Adaptation of modern Machine Learning techniques to accelerator modeling and operation
Preparing, performing, and reporting on beam experiments
Use of accelerator modeling, Machine Learning, and beam experiments to establish digital twins of the hadron-injector chain, including NSRL and the AGS
Understanding polarized hadron beams and their acceleration in RHIC’s accelerator chain, both theoretically and experimentally
Understanding the slow extraction system and high-quality beam extraction methods used to prepare the beams for NSRL, both theoretically and experimentally
Working with the control systems at C-AD and analysis of accelerator data
Learning how to measure and correct the beam quality for different systems and using machine learning to develop virtual diagnostics
Taking a leadership role in the modeling, verification, and improved performance of the accelerator subsystems at C-AD
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics, Physics, or related area
Experience with accelerator and beam simulation and modeling tools such as MADX and Bmad

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) will begin construction on New York City’s first all-electric university research building in May. The new biomedical research building in Washington Heights is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and will house eight stories of laboratories and research facilities, collaboration corners, living walls, and community engagement spaces.
The new biomedical research building will become the center of Columbia’s efforts to gain new understanding of diseases and develop next-generation treatments for some of the most significant threats to human health, including neurodegenerative disease, autoimmune disease, metabolic disorders, heart disease, and cancer.
This will be the first university-owned research building in New York City that does not rely on fossil fuels and fully incorporates sustainability goals into all aspects of its design and operations. The new building will use significantly less energy than similar buildings of its kind and is expected to perform 30% more efficiently than the ASHRAE 90.1 2010 standard, an energy efficiency benchmark for commercial buildings in the United States.

“We are so proud to be laying the groundwork for this innovative new research building at Columbia. To create a space that will advance biomedical science, bring us closer to our local community, and help our medical center reduce its carbon footprint all in one is truly remarkable,” says Katrina Armstrong, MD , d ean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and e xecutive vice president for Health and Biomedical Sciences, Columbia University. “ Our purpose as a university is to drive discovery, educate next-generation leaders, and create inclusive partnerships with our community. This new space will offer the best environment for our people to do all three.”

The building’s laboratory floors will house 32 principal investigators and their teams of research technicians, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students. The building will feature unique collaboration corners between research spaces that will help facilitate spontaneous interactions and idea-sharing among scientists. Biophilic elements such as green walls of living plants and the extensive use of natural, renewable materials will help reduce work fatigue and provide health and environmental benefits. The new building is accessible to community partners, providing ground level space to support community health engagement and research education and dissemination activities.
Research laboratories typically consume five to 10 times more energy per square foot than an average office building, according to the Department of Energy. At a time when scientists are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their research, Columbia’s new biomedical research building will set a leading example of a more sustainable future for science. To limit energy consumption, research spaces will incorporate many sustainable design strategies including high-efficiency lab fume hoods, demand-based controls for lab equipment, and air-source electric heat pumps.
The new biomedical building will outperform emission limits set by New York City’s Local Law 97 and help advance Columbia University’s Plan 2030 climate goal of achieving campus-wide net-zero emissions by 2050.
Columbia’s new biomedical research building is the latest in a series of climate initiatives by Columbia University, which includes the establishment of the Climate School in 2020 and launch of a global program to incorporate climate change into medical education.

Gavin newsom’s restaurant offering job at $ 16 per hour despite new state law of $ 20 per hour for fast food workers.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing backlash after a restaurant he partially owns posted a job listing for $16 an hour when a new state law is forcing fast food eateries to pay their employees $20 an hour.
PlumpJack Cafe in Olympic Valley – which is among a group of eateries owned by a company Newsom founded in 1992 – is hiring a part-time busser who “will aim to assist the food server … to ensure guest satisfaction during all aspects of the dining experience,” according to a ZipRecruiter posting.
The job listing states the salary for the busser is $16 an hour plus tips.
But a food service worker would make more working at a McDonald’s than at the high-end restaurant and bar thanks to the new $20 fast food minimum wage that went into effect Monday.
Newsom no longer participates in the day-to-day operations of his businesses since putting PlumpJack Group into a blind trust after he was elected governor in 2018, his team noted.
“He has no role in any of the holdings that may be held by the blind trust,” a spokesperson for the governor said when contacted by The Post.
The new law applies to restaurants offering limited or no table service that are part of a chain with 60 or more locations nationwide.
It raises the minimum by $4 an hour from the previous $16 an hour base pay.
PlumpJack Group operates four restaurants and bars and four wineries, according to its website, and therefore it’s far below the standards to meet the $20-hour wage minimum.
Still, the lower pay for a worker at an eatery that sells $37 pasta and a $67 steak compared to a fast food spot offering cheap burgers was called hypocritical by some.
Republican Assembly Member Joe Patterson bashed the PlumpJack Cafe job listing, which was posted 26 days ago, on X.
“I wonder why [Gov. Newsom’s] food businesses don’t pay $20/hour? Live job posting at $16/hr in Olympic Valley. It’s very, very expensive to live there… but he doesn’t do as he tells others and doesn’t pay a living wage,” Patterson tweeted.
Since Monday, fast food spots around the Golden State have upped their menu prices to accommodate paying their employees the higher wage.

A Burger King in Los Angeles increased its Texas Double Whopper meal by $1.80 (nearly 12%) from $15.09 on March 29 but surged to $16.89 on April 1, The Post found .
Besides the toll on consumers, California Republicans fear that the new $20 minimum will cost jobs.
It also risks losing low-paid cafeteria workers at cash-strapped public schools who will have to compete with fast food employers for staff.
