In the present era, social media platforms have increasingly become invaluable sources of information and connectivity. Twitter(X) is one of the social media landscape’s most prominent and influential components. Certainly, Twitter data offers substantial value across a range of disaster-related applications. Its utility extends to real-time event detection, classifying diverse crisis types, and analyzing evolving sentiments throughout such events. A disaster is a catastrophic event that leads to significant disruption in the everyday operations of a community. This paper reviews the trends and challenges associated with using social media in disaster management. As part of this paper, we systematically and consistently examine several crises-including natural hazards, human-induced disasters, and health-related disasters. Different information types and sources are prevalent in different crises, leading to insights into their prevalence.

A study of 2,400 Novartis employees around the world found that simply hearing about others’ struggles can normalize accessing support at work.

Novartis has trained more than 1,000 employees as Mental Health First Aiders to offer peer-to-peer support for their colleagues. While employees were eager for the training, uptake of the program remains low. To understand why, a team of researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial with 2,400 Novartis employees who worked in the UK, Ireland, India, and Malaysia. Employees were shown one of six framings that were designed to overcome two key barriers: privacy concerns and usage concerns. They found that employees who read a story about their colleague using the service were more likely to sign up to learn more about the program, and that emphasizing the anonymity of the program did not seem to have an impact. Their findings suggest that one way to encourage employees to make use of existing mental health resources is by creating a supportive culture that embraces sharing about mental health challenges at work.

New study shows NHS digital weight management program is effective at achieving clinically meaningful weight loss

The success of a national weight management program has been highlighted in a study in the journal Obesity . The 12-week NHS Digital Weight Management Program gives diet, exercise and lifestyle advice via a phone app or online, to patients referred by their GP with a high BMI plus hypertension, diabetes or both.

The 32,000 people who finished the program in the first year saw an average weight loss of 2.2 kilos (5lbs); with those who attended more (at least 60%) of the program losing an average of 3.9 kilos (8.5lbs).

Senior author of the study, Imperial College London's Professor Jonathan Valabhji, also established the program in his former role as NHS England's National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity.

He said, "The key is that it was made more accessible to patients in their daily lives. It's rewarding and encouraging to see the difference it is making."
