Common mistakes to avoid in a resume

When it comes to crafting a compelling and effective resume, it’s important to avoid making common mistakes that can prevent your application from standing out. Here are some tips to help you avoid these pitfalls and improve your chances of getting noticed by hiring managers:

Tips to avoid making common mistakes

Don’t use a generic resume template: Templates can be helpful, but using a generic one can make your resume blend in with hundreds of others. Customize your template to fit your unique skills and experience.

Don’t include irrelevant information: Stick to only including information that relates to the job you’re applying for. Listing every single job you’ve ever had, or including personal details like your hobbies and interests, can make your resume cluttered and unfocused.

Don’t make spelling or grammar errors: Even the smallest errors can make your resume look unprofessional. Take the time to proofread your document multiple times, or ask a friend or family member to review it for you.

Don’t make your resume too long: While it’s important to include all relevant information, a resume that goes on for too long can be overwhelming to read. Aim for one page if possible, or two pages at the most.

Don’t be too vague: Make sure your resume includes specific details about your accomplishments and experience. Instead of simply listing your job duties, describe how you made a positive impact in your previous roles.

How to correct and improve your resume

If you’ve already made some of these common resume mistakes, don’t worry. There are steps you can take to improve your document and make it stand out from the competition:

Start with a strong objective or summary statement: This section should grab the reader’s attention and clearly state what makes you a great candidate for the job.

Rearrange your sections: Make sure your most relevant experience is listed first, and use bullet points to break up large blocks of text.

Quantify your accomplishments: Instead of simply stating that you “improved sales,” give specific numbers to show just how much you improved them.

Use strong action verbs: Instead of using boring verbs like “assisted” or “worked,” use action verbs like “managed” or “implemented” to show your active involvement in your previous roles.

Tailor your resume to the job: Use the job description to guide your resume, including keywords and skills that the employer is looking for.

By avoiding common resume mistakes and following these tips for improvement, you’ll be better equipped to stand out from the competition and make a strong first impression on potential employers.

Keywords and Buzzwords for Assistant Restaurant Manager Resumes

If you’re looking to make your assistant restaurant manager resume stand out, incorporating industry-specific keywords and buzzwords is essential. Not only does it demonstrate your knowledge and experience in the field, but it can also help your resume get noticed by hiring managers and recruiters.

Here are some industry-specific keywords and buzzwords that you can use to highlight your skills and achievements as an assistant restaurant manager:

  • Customer service
  • Team management
  • Profitability
  • Inventory management
  • Cost control
  • Employee training and development
  • Food safety and sanitation
  • Time management
  • Menu planning
  • Sales growth
  • Communication skills
  • Quality assurance
  • Problem-solving
  • Performance evaluation

When incorporating these keywords and buzzwords, it’s important to do so organically. Simply listing them out without any context won’t help your resume stand out. Instead, think about specific instances in your career where you demonstrated these skills and achievements and incorporate them into your resume with specific examples.

For example, instead of simply listing “team management” as a keyword, highlight an instance in your career where you successfully managed a team of servers, including how you motivated and developed your team to improve service and ultimately increase profitability.

Another way to incorporate industry-specific keywords and buzzwords is through your summary and skills section. Use these areas to directly mention your skills and achievements in a concise manner, making it clear to hiring managers what you can bring to the table as an assistant restaurant manager.

Remember, while incorporating industry-specific keywords and buzzwords is important, it’s equally important to tailor them to the specific job posting you’re applying for. Carefully read the job description and incorporate keywords that directly relate to the responsibilities of the position.

By incorporating industry-specific keywords and buzzwords into your assistant restaurant manager resume, you can showcase your expertise and stand out from other candidates. Make sure to use them in a natural way and tailor them to the specific job posting to increase your chances of landing an interview.

Cover Letter Writing and Job Application Tips for Assistant Restaurant Managers

As an Assistant Restaurant Manager, you may be expected to handle various responsibilities like managing staff, ensuring customer satisfaction, maintaining inventory, and optimizing sales. If you are applying for a new Assistant Restaurant Manager position, writing an effective cover letter is crucial to increase the chances of getting hired. Here are some tips on how to write an impressive cover letter and avoid common job application mistakes.

Importance of a Cover Letter in the Job Application Process

While submitting a resume is a vital part of the job application process, it is essential to submit a cover letter to showcase your communication skills, interest in the position, and relevant experience. A cover letter is a personal introduction that can set you apart from other applicants and provide insights about your suitability for the role. Assistant Restaurant Manager positions require strong written and verbal communication skills, and a well-written cover letter can demonstrate your expertise and willingness to succeed in the role.

Tips for Writing an Effective Cover Letter

When writing your cover letter, keep in mind the following essential tips:

  • Address the letter to a specific person if possible, rather than using a generic salutation like ‘To Whom It May Concern.’
  • Start with an attention-grabbing opening sentence that highlights your enthusiasm for the position and what drew you to the company.
  • Customize your cover letter to the specific job posting, incorporating keywords and requirements from the job listing to demonstrate your qualifications.
  • Emphasize your relevant experience, education, and accomplishments, along with your transferable skills that would be beneficial in this role.
  • End your cover letter with a call to action that invites the hiring manager to contact you for further discussion.

Common Job Application Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some common mistakes to avoid when preparing your cover letter:

  • Focusing too much on your personal goals and aspirations rather than showcasing your qualifications and experience.
  • Sending a generic cover letter that does not address the specific job posting or company.
  • Being too lengthy or wordy, which can lose the reader’s attention.
  • Neglecting to proofread for grammar and spelling errors, which can detract from your professionalism.
  • Overusing buzzwords or jargon that might not be understood by the reader.

Taking the time to prepare a well-crafted cover letter can increase your chances of getting hired as an Assistant Restaurant Manager. Keep your cover letter concise, engaging, and customized to the job posting, and avoid common job application mistakes to stand out from the competition.

Assistant Restaurant Manager Resume Summary Examples

Including a resume summary or objective in an assistant restaurant manager's resume is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it provides the hiring manager with a concise snapshot of your skills and experiences. This section allows you to highlight your most notable accomplishments, trainerships, and overall management abilities. It can effectively showcase why you are an excellent candidate for the job, even if the hiring manager only has time to skim through your resume. Secondly, it helps communicate your career objectives to the hiring manager. By carefully crafting your resume objective, you can clearly state your career goals and how you plan to achieve them in the role you are applying for. This can help the hiring manager determine how well your goals align with the company's objectives. Lastly, it can also be used to explain why you are transitioning to a different career or returning to the workforce after a break. A well-written resume summary or objective can effectively justify these situations and prevent any negative assumptions that might impact your chance of getting the job. For Example: 1.

Saying you are “experienced in managing staff” becomes much more believable when you provide examples. 3. Highlighting Your Progression: If you've been in the restaurant industry for a while, your experience section can show your career progression. Employers can see how you've taken on more responsibilities over time. 4. Understanding Your Specialization: Whether you have more experience in fast food, fine dining, or catering can significantly impact your employability. The experience section allows employers to see what types of restaurants you're familiar with. 5. Proving Your Commitment: Employers want to hire individuals who will stick around for a while. If your experience section demonstrates you have been steadily employed in the restaurant industry, it suggests you are committed to this line of work. 6. Attracting Attention: A well-constructed experience section can make your resume stand out from a pile. If you use strong action verbs and clearly detail what you've accomplished, it is more likely to catch an employer's eye. 7. Demonstrating Success: Where possible, use concrete data and examples in your experience section. If you can provide numbers that prove you increased table turnover rate or achieved a high level of customer satisfaction, it shows you were successful in your previous roles. Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing an Assistant Restaurant Manager Resume

In this competitive job market, employers receive an average of 180 applications for each open position. To process these resumes, companies often rely on automated applicant tracking systems, which can sift through resumes and eliminate the least qualified applicants. If your resume is among the few that make it past these bots, it must still impress the recruiter or hiring manager. With so many applications coming in, recruiters typically give each resume only 5 seconds of their attention before deciding whether to discard it. Considering this, it's best to avoid including any distracting information on your application that could cause it to be thrown away. To help make sure your resume stands out, review the list below of what you should not include on your job application.

  • Not including a cover letter. A cover letter is a great way to explain why you are the best candidate for the job and why you want the position.
  • Using too much jargon. Hiring managers do not want to read a resume full of technical terms that they do not understand.
  • Omitting important details. Make sure to include your contact information, educational background, job history, and any relevant skills and experiences.
  • Using a generic template. Take the time to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. This will show the employer that you are serious about the position.
  • Spelling and grammar errors. Always double-check your resume for typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.
  • Focusing too much on duties. Make sure to include accomplishments and successes to show the employer that you are a great candidate.
  • Including personal information. Avoid including any personal information such as age, marital status, or religious beliefs.

Restaurant Manager Resume

  • Restaurant Resumes by Experience
  • Restaurant Resumes by Type

If not for restaurant managers, nothing would get done in the restaurant industry. You hire personnel, coordinate schedules, order supplies, facilitate a warm environment, and maintain the budget. Your job helps shape modern social relations, community, city structure, and economy.

You shouldn’t have to become a professional at resume or cover letter writing to show employers your potential.

Thankfully, that’s not necessary. We’ve reviewed countless restaurant manager resumes, built tons of resume examples , and discovered what works and what won’t for landing interviews.

We distilled that information into seven free restaurant manager resume samples to help you make a resume to impress in 2024.

Restaurant manager resume example with 4 years of experience

Why this resume works

  • Your restaurant manager resume should  show  rather than tell your job performance. Use metrics to discuss the employees you managed, health inspection scores, quarterly or annual returns, money saved through efficiency, reviews, and staff retention.
  • Important : don’t spell out the numbers. Numerals break up the visual monotony of letters and catch hiring managers’ eyes.
  • If you opt for a summary, customize it to each job you apply for. Review the job description and incorporate essential skills. It’s additionally important to mention the restaurant by name.
  • It might seem like a headache, but you’ll score fewer interviews if you fail to customize and mass spam a generic resume to employers.

Restaurant Assistant Manager Resume

Restaurant assistant manager resume example with 10 years of experience

  • Try using words like “spearheaded” and “overhauled” to highlight the ability to work without constant supervision.
  • Check the job description of the positions for which you apply. Though you can include skills related to all restaurant management jobs, you’ll have the best chance of getting past the ATS if you match your skills to those highlighted in the job description.
  • Because of the competition for restaurant manager jobs, hiring teams automate the initial stage with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to accelerate the review process. Recruiters can filter resumes for specific job skills to remove any who may be a poor fit.
  • Include relevant skills for restaurant managers, such as customer service and interpersonal skills, troubleshooting, organization, leadership, and flexibility.

Entry-Level Restaurant Manager Resume

Entry-level restaurant manager resume example with 9 years of experience in the food industry

  • Demonstrating a history of serving, bartending, and supervising on your entry-level restaurant manager resume shows that you know the nuances of a dining establishment well enough to keep things running smoothly.

Restaurant General Manager Resume

Restaurant general manager resume example with 8 years of experience

  • Employers try to sift through applicants quickly to determine legitimate candidates. Placing your most significant experience at the top of the page will ensure your restaurant general manager resume lands in the interview pile rather than the bin.
  • Focus on successes with metrics to back them up. For example, instead of writing “ job duties included budgeting and basic accounting skills ,” your resume would shine with “ generated restaurant target sales figures and individual server target sales, analyzing weekly data to make improvements, resulting in annual sales 11% above targets .”

Restaurant Bar Manager Resume

Restaurant bar manager resume example with 4 years of experience

  • Find examples of how you streamlined processes across teams to bolster your resume. For instance, finding innovative ways to communicate with the kitchen staff shows your ability to make operations easier for everyone.

Pizza Restaurant Manager Resume

Pizza restaurant manager resume example with 4 years of experience

  • If you have a background at any restaurant, you can highlight transferable skills. For instance, highlight using ingredients before spoilage as a chef (saving the restaurant money), engaging in positive customer service, and increasing delivery efficiency.
  • Use active voice, action words, concise sentences, and metrics in every bullet point as you build your resume  to make your application professional and polished.

Fast Food Restaurant Manager Resume

Fast food restaurant manager resume example with 10 years of experience

  • It’s best to highlight the most relevant jobs on your fast food restaurant manager resume . These should be at least two and no more than four work experiences.
  • We recommend including three to six bullet points for each work experience and less than 200 characters per point. To achieve the most impact in the fewest characters, you need to use quantifiable metrics.
  • If this is a challenge, don’t sweat it.  Writing the perfect resume  is no easy feat and may require some adjustment. Use our  resume checker  to see how you can make improvements that land you more interviews.

Yelp launches new AI assistant to help consumers easily find and connect with service professionals

Yelp’s Spring Release unveils new features that leverage LLMs to better connect consumers and pros, and bring Yelp content to third-party platforms; Yelp Guest manager enhancements improve operational efficiency for restaurants

sample resume for assistant restaurant manager

In this Spring Release we’re introducing:

  • Yelp Assistant, a new conversational AI feature that intelligently guides you through the process of finding the right pro for the job, transforming how you discover, connect with and hire service professionals.
  • Yelp Fusion AI API, enabling third-party partners to integrate Yelp’s trusted content into their products to create natural language search experiences.
  • Yelp Guest Manager enhancements that improve and streamline front-of-house operations, Waitlist and Kiosk updates to help guests get seated faster and more efficiently.

As Yelp approaches 20 years of connecting you with great local businesses, we’re continuously innovating to enrich your experience, whether you’re planning your next home project or looking for the perfect dining spot. What began as a review site that millions of people relied on for finding great restaurants and other local experiences, has evolved into a powerful platform that helps you easily navigate the often complex task of finding and hiring service professionals. Today, many of our users rely on Yelp to find the right service pro for their needs — in the first quarter of 2024, consumer interest in home services businesses was up nearly 30% compared to Q1 2019. And now we’re leveraging AI to make that process even easier.

After recently announcing a series of new discovery, contribution, services and AI-powered features earlier this year, today we’re unveiling our Spring Product Release with more than 15 new features and updates that will transform the Yelp experience. Our new AI-powered Yelp Assistant will revolutionize how you discover and connect with service pros. For partners, the new Yelp Fusion AI API will allow third-party platforms to create natural language search experiences powered by Yelp content. For restaurants, enhancements to Yelp Guest Manager will help them seat more diners by boosting front of house efficiency; and more.

Yelp Assistant transforms how you discover and hire services professionals with conversational AI

Whether you’re in need of quotes to repair your roof, looking to get your car detailed, or want to change up your hairstyle, Yelp Assistant, a new conversational AI feature, reinvents how you connect with and hire service professionals.

Powered by large language models (LLMs), Yelp Assistant intelligently guides you through the process of finding the right pro for the job. It contextually understands your project or problem, engages in a professional-like dialogue with follow up questions, and then matches you with businesses that are qualified to help with your project. Unlike any other solution available today, Yelp Assistant is able to efficiently translate your problem and identify the right provider for your needs because the LLM is trained on Yelp’s vast and reliable dataset, including Request a Quote, business information, and more, in addition to LLMs from OpenAI. With its effective and precise matching capabilities, Yelp Assistant is delivering highly relevant, detailed leads to businesses, enabling them to more efficiently assess the project and get hired.

Yelp Assistant not only helps you connect with pros who are suited for your project, but it also alleviates the guesswork on the type of specialists you may need, making hiring the right pros straightforward and stress-free. Once you let Yelp Assistant know what project or issue you’re looking to solve, it quickly springs into action with a personalized conversation to collect the necessary details a pro would need to evaluate your project. You have the option to either craft your own replies, choose from a selection of convenient one-click responses, or ask it a question to help further refine your response. After you review and approve the final project request, Yelp Assistant then creates and sends detailed project submissions to relevant service providers on your behalf, enabling businesses to better respond with accurate pricing and availability.

Yelp Assistant can connect you with businesses across thousands of categories within home, local, auto, beauty, pet, real estate, professional, event planning, financial services, and more. It’s currently available on iOS from the ‘Projects’ tab and will roll out to Android later this summer.

In addition to Yelp Assistant, today we’re introducing other updates to help you connect with service pros. Yelp’s new Project Ideas, accessible through the ‘Projects’ tab, provide recommendations to help inspire your next home upgrade, alleviate decision paralysis, and make it easy to request quotes from service pros in your area. This summer, we’ll refine Project Ideas with predictive analysis to provide you with more personalized Project Ideas, recommendations and checklists. Plus, service pros will find business owner inbox enhancements that help them quickly respond to and secure jobs. New Saved Replies, currently available on iOS, allow business owners to effortlessly create and save response templates for common questions. They’ll also be able to stay more organized with updates that distinguish new leads from previously contacted messages, and new city location tags that easily identify the service area.

Yelp Fusion AI API brings natural language search to third-party partners

Third-party partners can now integrate Yelp’s trusted content into their products to create conversational AI experiences with the new Yelp Fusion AI API. For years, Yelp Fusion has enabled consumers to access Yelp’s high quality information on local businesses in other places across the web, on mobile and in cars and homes. Our new LLM-powered partner solution, Yelp Fusion AI API, enables innovative user experiences using natural language search, even if partners have no previous AI products or experiences.

Utilizing Yelp’s reliable local data and content — including business information, reviews and photos — the Yelp Fusion AI API enhances discovery on third-party platforms by enabling conversational queries like, “Find a vegan brunch place with a patio that’s open this Sunday at 10:00 a.m.,” or, “Recommend a good gym in Miami that has a swimming pool.” The AI will provide responses that are contextual to the conversation, sharing relevant businesses with detailed information, including Yelp ratings, review highlights , photos, business summaries , and more.

This new solution not only benefits partners by enabling conversational engagement using Yelp content, but it also reduces their need to acquire and manage data, ultimately making it easier and more efficient for their users to find great local businesses. The Yelp Fusion AI API represents a significant advancement in our mission to connect people with great local businesses, by opening new possibilities for these connections to be made seamlessly both on and off of Yelp.

The Yelp Fusion AI API is currently available for partners to integrate into their platform, and  non-partners can test out the AI API with 30-day access or contact us to learn more. Today, the Yelp Fusion AI API supports single-turn questions and responses, with multi-turn conversations coming later this year.

Enhancing the Restaurant Experience with Yelp Guest Manager

Yelp Guest Manager , our comprehensive front-of-house solution, gives more than 11,000 restaurants access to the largest diner network.* Now, with new features that streamline front-of-house operations, enhance analytics for restaurant owners, and improve Yelp Waitlist and Kiosk, restaurants can boost efficiency, seat more diners, and improve guest experiences.

Revamped Yelp Guest Manager provides hosts with smarter insights

We’re introducing a new suite of features for Yelp Guest Manager that provide hosts with a deeper understanding of their guests’ needs, enabling more effective staff utilization, better preparedness for upcoming shifts, and streamlined operations. Cover Flow makes it even easier to plan for and manage the dinner rush by helping hosts better optimize server sections and table assignments, and monitor table status in real time. Party Highlights empower staff to create more personalized and attentive guest experiences, while Shift Notes streamline front of house communication by centralizing information for staff. Plus, credit card holds for in-house reservations just got easier with automated SMS confirmations sent to guests, eliminating the need for hosts to manually enter credit card information.

New analytics drive operational efficiency for restaurant owners

It’s not just hosts getting a revamped Yelp Guest Manager experience, business owners will also find new table usage analytic s, user permissions functionality, online reservation management features, and traffic analytics in their Yelp business owner account. The new analytics dashboard displays a holistic view of table states and usage, including seat delay and average table turn time, enabling restaurant owners to better find efficiencies and increase diners seated. New user permissions, rolling out in the coming weeks, provide restaurant owners and general managers with more precise control over staff access to Yelp Guest Manager features, getting the right tools into the right hands. With online reservation management, restaurants can now create reservations and assign tables without having to use the host app. These new updates are available in the Yelp Guest Manager business owner account s on desktop. And in the coming months, restaurant owners will have access to new traffic attribution analytics that detail valuable cover and booking trends.

New Waitlist updates improve wait time accuracy and diner communication

Yelp Waitlist has made it easier than ever for diners to join the waitlist at their favorite restaurants from anywhere, while freeing up host time to focus on other important front-of-house operations. Wait time accuracy continues to improve with AI through our use of neural networks to help diners better plan their restaurant outings. In addition to more accurate wait times, new text message place-in-line updates, such as if the line is moving faster or slower than anticipated, mean there’s no need for diners to keep an eye on the app or ask when they’ll be seated. Soon, diners will also receive texts to check out popular dishes before they’re seated. Hosts can automate updates or send them manually, simplifying diner communication and helping them seat guests faster, reducing table turn times.

Redesigned Yelp Kiosk enhances the diner check in experience

Yelp Kiosk just got a new look. This newly redesigned experience makes it easier to join the waitlist and check yourself in when you’re at the restaurant, streamlining the process for diners while allowing the host to manage other front-of-house operations.

By continually evolving and adapting to the needs of our community, Yelp is setting the stage for a future where every interaction is smarter, more intuitive, and tailored to meet the dynamic needs of consumers and businesses. Keep an eye out for even more ways we’re leveraging AI and new engaging content, like AI stitched videos using real photos, videos, and information from Yelp, to help you find the right business for your needs.
