Based at the offices of the Science and Research Centre of Koper (SRC Koper) , the Historical Society of Southern Primorska, Koper undertakes research and scholarship into the history of the Southern Primorska region. Since its establishment in 1989 it has published first as original publisher, later in cooperation with the Annales Publishing House , the journals Annales and Acta Histriae , as well as many other monographs or articles on the history of Istria and the Mediterranean region. Since its beginnings, it has been organising international scientific meetings and symposiums and many other educational activities aimed at young people and the broader public in general.

The society laid the foundation for the establishment of the Science and Research Centre of Koper (SRC Koper) later in 1994 and consequently also for the University of Primorska in 2003. It cooperates with the Union of Historical Societies of Slovenia and with other affiliated associations in Slovenia and abroad. Its president from its beginnings onward is Salvator Žitko, also the former head of the Koper Regional Museum

After 4 years, the 3rd volume in the series of Mammals of Turkey and Cyprus has been published. The 1st volume ( Kryŝtufek and Voharlík 2001 ) served as an introduction to the series and covered the former order Insectivora (hedgehogs, shrews, and moles). The 2nd volume ( Kryŝtufek and Voharlík 2005 ) covered the first 31 species within the order Rodentia, and the recently published 3rd volume completes the treatment of this order and covers the remaining 32 extant, plus 1 extinct, species within the families and subfamilies indicated by the title.

This book is not a field guide. The intent of the authors was to create a reference work that is comparable in scope and extent to The Mammals of North America by E. Raymond Hall (1981) . The 3 volumes comprise over 800 pages and weigh more than 2 kg. Definitely, these books were not intended to be carried around in your backpack.

The book starts with a revised checklist of the Mammals of Turkey and Cyprus following the latest taxonomic nomenclature ( Wilson and Reeder 2005 ), and the authors also commented on the taxonomic changes since the publication of the previous volumes. A significant editorial and quality improvement in this volume is that color photographs were inserted into the text instead of showing them on color plates at the end of the book.

Identification keys to taxa (families, genera, species, and subspecies) lead up to the detailed descriptions. In addition, a literature review of relevant publications on the higher taxa (families, subfamilies, and genera) precedes the species descriptions. Information regarding each of the 32 species is organized into 6 major divisions that are further subdivided into smaller topics: taxonomy, description (external, skeletal, and dental morphology; karyology), variation (within and among populations), geographic distribution (both current and historical), habitat (general description, elevational differences, associated mammal species, population densities), and biology (activity, reproduction, diet, predation, conservation status). Line drawings of the skull, dental pattern, and other morphological characters aid readers in species identification and recognition. Distribution maps show collecting localities of voucher specimens as points and the hypothetical distribution range as a shaded area. Color images show photographs of museum skin vouchers, representative habitats, and, when it was available, live animals. Additional figures (e.g., variation in population density over years, measurement box plots, and scatter plots), and tables (external and skeletal measurement, chromosomal variation) were included frequently to present data more effectively. On average, the highly detailed description of each species runs 8 to 10 pages, and information is referenced properly throughout the book. The book closes with the list of cited literature (32 pages) and an index.

One of the great values of this book is that it brings the scientific literature on the mammals of Turkey, published in Russian, Slovenian, German, and Turkish, to the English speaking community. Also, many of the cited references were published in difficult-to-access scientific journals, and they might be overlooked or missed by western scientists. The authors did not simply compile and summarize information from the literature but examined voucher specimens at 11 major museums in Europe, Russia, Turkey, and the United States. Species distribution maps are based on museum specimens, and they provide a snapshot of the currently available voucher materials. The book also presents many of the previously unpublished observations and scientific data collected by the authors.

The book should be of high value not only to those who are working on mammals within Turkey but also to those who try to find additional publications and research on some of the species covered in this volume.—Gábor R. Rácz, State Museum, Monter Laboratory of Parasitology, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE 68588, USA; e-mail: [email protected] .
