It takes about 2-5 years to earn your doctoral degree.

Mississippi State University

Nova Southeastern University, the largest private research university in Florida, boasts 14 colleges and 11 campuses. NSU offers 37 doctoral programs, with 19 of them available online. Earn a doctoral degree online in subjects such as criminal justice, computer science, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology. 

Departments such as the NSU Fischler College of Education and the School of Criminal Justice offer dissertation resources, including templates and mentor support. Each program sets distinct admission requirements, but you generally need a master's degree and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Old Dominion University

The Biosphere ( ESSP 504 ) introduces students to the concept of the biosphere as articulated by Vladimir Vernadsky in the 1920s and 1930s, and examines the concepts and roles of nutrient cycling, biodiversity, evolution, ecology, and ecosystem productivity on Earth. The overall course is framed around the Drake equation and walks students through critical steps in the formation of the solar system, habitable zones around stars, evolution and proliferation of life on Earth, the interconnected nature of inorganic nutrient cycling and ecosystem function, and human's impact on all these systems, culminating with the final variable of the Drake equation--the longevity of civilizations--and humanity's active role in the Anthropocene. The Ph.D. in information science and learning technologies involves 72 credit hours. Students may attend the program entirely online or opt to take select courses on campus. Transfer up to 30 master’s-level credits toward the degree.

At least nine credit hours of ISLT doctoral seminars : Delve into the field’s latest research while refining your writing skills.

Research and dissertation : Prepare a single piece of extensive research or three short, article-style studies. SISLT does not restrict research hours but expects all candidates to produce innovative, ideally cross-disciplinary results that ignite conversations and impact the field. SISLT currently concentrates its research on the information needs of low-income and rural communities regarding public health, training the engineering workforce on innovation and creativity, tools and systems for digital publishing, video games as an emotional coping mechanism, teaching practices and efficiency, techniques for developing learning games, supporting libraries and their information resources and preserving broadcasts, archeological artifacts, data and photography.

Course work : In addition to doctoral seminars, complete at least 18 credit hours of related electives, nine credit hours of education research methodologies and at least nine credit hours in a related emphasis area, such as psychology, sociology, political science, journalism or anthropology. During this sequence, SISLT requires Ph.D. candidates to put together a portfolio of professional projects highlighting their achievements, particularly those presenting a solution or with real-world applications. Candidates further work with an adviser to develop their program of study and residency plan and take both qualifying and comprehensive examinations.

Based upon commitments, full-time students typically take three courses each semester and finish the program in three to four years. Part-time students take one or two classes each semester and finish in four to five years.

Dr. Heather Moulaison-Sandy has been with the iSchool since 2011. Her research focuses on organization of information and digital libraries, especially in scholarly communication. Dr. Moulaison-Sandy teaches primarily in library and information science.

In addition to her role as a dean in the College of Education and professor of library science, Dr. Moore serves as a faculty member in the MU Institute for Data Science and as an affiliated faculty member in the Black Studies department. Her experience encompasses the human-centered and usability design of performance support technology and online instructional environments. 

Dr. Xu’s research interests focus on embodied interactions and learning, immersive virtual learning environments and game-based learning for STEM subjects. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods, he has been actively conducting research on learning and training in technology-enhanced environments to pursue answers to the umbrella research question of how to use technology to help people learn.

Research reveals tools to make STEM degrees more affordable

In a new study in Issues in Science and Technology , Dominique J. Baker, an associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development and the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy & Administration at the University of Delaware, has explored the role of student loans on hopeful students striving for college degrees, particularly in STEM.

The cost of attending a public four-year college in the United States has more than doubled since the early 1990s, with inflation factored in.

Undergraduate student loan debt has become unmanageable for a wide swath of borrowers in the United States. Bachelor's degree recipients borrow on average $41,300, with a median of $30,000. The median borrower still owes 92% of their loan four years after earning a bachelor's degree, and nearly one-third of people who took out a student loan between 1998 and 2018 fell into default. As part of its emergency response to the pandemic, the US Department of Education suspended action on federal student loans that were in default as of March 13, 2020, until at least September 2024.

Student loan debt is uneven across racial groups.

Recent data has also shown variation in loan repayment patterns by major, challenging the popular assumption that all STEM graduates have similar prospects after college. Though the median amount owed on student loans for STEM majors four years after earning their degree is 80%, this varies—from 59% for engineering to 94% for biological and physical sciences and agricultural sciences. These figures do not include the amount of additional debt students may incur in pursuit of further graduate education. Due to interest accrual, delayed repayment of undergraduate student loans can also result in greater debt burdens.

The fact that differential tuition may make a STEM major more expensive than a non-STEM major at some universities deserves more attention when considering how to make STEM degrees more affordable. For example, advanced, in-state students at the University of Maryland pursuing engineering and computer science degrees pay $1,500 more per semester than their peers enrolled in other disciplines (nearly 27% higher).

The United States currently relies on a rough patchwork of policies and mechanisms to project the image of college affordability while actually depending on students to navigate huge variances in higher education costs. Inevitably, they're often left to shoulder a debt burden that might follow them around for decades. Lessons from other countries on how to assemble the policy patchwork more deliberately—to actually lower student costs and subsidize tuition in targeted disciplines—may help.

Experts on college affordability, tuition setting, and other related topics in higher education should convene to examine the value of tuition caps as a policy, particularly within the context of bringing the missing millions into STEM disciplines. Since most public university subsidies come from state coffers, federal efforts alone are unlikely to solve college affordability. And yet there are no clear policy tools available to ensure that states contribute their due for higher education.

The decentralized nature of US higher education conceals useful information from researchers, decisionmakers, and policymakers—like the national average tuition increase for STEM degrees under differential tuition. Higher education leaders, especially in STEM fields, should be invested in creating spaces for ongoing conversations about real changes in college affordability as another avenue for removing barriers to STEM education and careers.

Antioch University

Antioch University offers an online PhD in Environmental Studies program. To apply, applicants must submit 3 letters of recommendation.

The program can typically be completed in 4 years and requires 69 credits to graduate. During the first two years of the program, students must attend an 8 day summer program. They must also attend in-person classes over 4 weekends during certain semesters.

Antioch University  is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Mississippi State University

Mississippi State University offers an online PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering program. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 to be eligible.

Students may choose to specialize in one of seven different areas, including Environmental Engineering. The program requires students to complete 18 hours of coursework and 20 hours of research for a thesis. Mississippi State University  is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

University of Missouri

The University of Missouri offers an online program for a PhD in Human Environmental Science with an emphasis in Architectural Studies.

To graduate, students must complete 72 credits. The program usually takes 5 years to complete. To be eligible for the program, applicants are required to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, official transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation. The  University of Missouri  is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota offers a PhD in Environmental Engineering. The program requires 90 credit hours and usually takes 7 years to complete.

Students may choose between online or in-person learning. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must submit an online application with all official transcripts and references. The  University of North Dakota is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Villanova University

Villanova University offers an online PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering program. To graduate, students must reach the minimum credit requirements, pass a qualifying exam and a comprehensive exam, and defend a PhD dissertation.

Applicants must submit all transcripts, 2 applicant rating forms, a statement of purpose, a resume, and official GRE scores.

Villanova University is accredited by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
