Free Reading Resources For Special Education

Instruction and Lesson Plans

It’s important that we have many resources at our fingertips when teaching reading because we never know what will work with our students, their needs, levels, etc. Below are a variety of free reading resources to add to your repertoire.

resources with visual supports

The shared tarheel reader has a variety of books with core boards right on the screen. Plus, there are books in a variety of languages allowing ESL students to read in their language. You can also use switches and change color contrast.

The How To… Life Skills Books are interactive and include the visual supports students need. These books are adapted for special education and speech. They will help students develop matching skills, build language (receptive and expressive) and attending skills.

Boardmaker To Go offers a free unit with visual supports such as core boards and templates.

Target core words

I love these books developed by Tobbi Dynavox that focus on core words. These books include lesson plans with multiple free books for each of the core words in the list. You can print the books or share them on a smartboard or Google Classroom.

Online Tools To Support Learning

The Unite For Literacy site has a large variety of books and read to me options. You can change the language the books are read to you based on your student’s needs as well.

The Oxford Owl ebooks have read to me options as well as annotation tools. Use the tools to highlight words, sounds, punctuation, blends, etc. These books are great when teaching remotely or during shared reading in the classroom. An account is required, but sign-up is free.

Set Up Student Access

Epic is a fantastic website that is free for teachers. It has many topics, leveled books, and read to me options. There is also an alphabet series that is great for highlighting 1 letter at a time. There are options to set up students in your teacher account. Then, you can assign books and quizzes to students, as well as get data on how long and which books students are reading.

Reading activities

Use these reading comprehension sheets in your direct instruction, reading centers, independent work systems, or for homework. They are free in our resource library. Not a member? Click HERE to join our email community.

The Matching CVC words tasks are also free in our resource library!

For students still learning their letters, grab these free alphabet poke cards . They are also in our free resource library.

Leveled Daily Homework

special education homework packets

Special Education Teachers are busy. We have IEPs, lesson plans, behavior plans, staff training, staff meetings, parent meetings, parent communication, communication systems, AAC devices, clinician collaboration, case managers, and once in a blue moon we may need to use the bathroom. The absolute last thing on our radar is homework – especially if you are a new teacher or in a new classroom.  We are elbow deep in the craziness of back to school season and some well- meaning but not well-received parent asks when we are planning on starting to send homework home. The first time I got that message, I’m pretty sure I sobbed. As a new teacher, I could barely get through planning for the school day much less planning for what my kids will be doing after the school day.

Hello! I have been putting this leveled homework on my wish list on Teacher’s Pay. I wanted to ask a questions before I bought it. Is this Common Core? Texas we are not allowed to use Common Core, will this be okay? Let me know your thoughts and thank you!

Hi Kelly! I specifically didn’t align it to any standards because I wanted our older students who maybe still need to work on more foundational skills to be able to use these. So no – there is no CCSS alignment. The skills stay consistent throughout the weeks so it would be easy to align to Texas standards! 🙂

This looks amazing!!! It’s just wha to need! I can’t get the bundle so it’s in my wish list

Classwork & Homework

This issue's topic:.

  • Tools to Build Student Text and Lecture Comprehension

There are a thousand small ways that students can drift into academic trouble by regularly showing up late for class, for example, or not writing down their homework assignments accurately. Teachers know, however, that such small problems can rapidly snowball into more serious academic difficulties, resulting in reduced test scores, lower course grades, and more disciplinary office referrals.

This Practical Teacher lists common stumbling blocks that can prevent students from fully understanding material taught to them or from completing work assignments. Practical solutions are offered to overcome each potential stumbling block. Educators can adapt the majority of these intervention ideas to include in Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Accommodation Plans.

To access the full issue of the Practical Teacher, NASET Members Login below.

Students often benefit in unexpected ways from explicit instruction in improving their study skills. Research has shown that students with behavioral difficulties and academic deficits can show improvements in both behavior and learning when taught strategies to study and absorb information more efficiently. Students' self-esteem and self-esteem can also increase, as they acquire the capabilities to manage their own learning program.

This intervention plan outlines a 3-strategy package for helping students to (1) organize an assignment notebook, (2) maintain a calendar of school assignments, and (3) prepare neatly formatted papers (Gleason, Colvin, & Archer, 1991).

NASET Member's Login below to access the full article.

Students who regularly complete and turn in homework assignments perform significantly better in school than those of similar ability who do not do homework (Olympia et al., 1994). Homework is valuable because it gives students a chance to practice, extend, and entrench the academic skills taught in school. Parents can be instrumental in encouraging and motivating their children to complete homework. This homework contract intervention (adapted from Miller & Kelly, 1994) uses goal-setting, a written contract, and rewards to boost student completion (and accuracy) of homework. Students also learn the valuable skills of breaking down academic assignments into smaller, more manageable subtasks and setting priorities for work completion.

Create your own homework packets for home learning using our free resources.

homework packets

This is another free collection of resources for teachers from The Curriculum Corner

Working on creating homework packets for your students? You’ve found the perfect place to start!

As schools are moving to e-learning, we know this is not possible for many across the country. Too many families do not have the resources to fully engage in e-learning.

For teachers in schools where technology is not available, we have heard of packets being created to send home with students.

We have just updated this collection in the fall of 2020 to add in our newest resources.

special education homework packets

While we in no way think sending home a packet of worksheets is ideal, nothing about the situation is ideal and as teachers we know to do the best we have with the circumstances we are dealt. If you must create homework packets, we wanted to give you the resources to do so.

We have worked to gather links to possible resources you can use when creating your packets.

The links below range from journal pages to math worksheets to graphic organizers.

Hopefully you will be able to find resources that will work for your students when creating your homework packets.

We have seen pictures of teachers creating pencil pouches with necessary supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors and glue. If you have other ideas you are putting together for your students – please share your suggestions below! We know many teachers are looking for ways to help their families.

Obviously at a time like this the intent of the packets your create will not so much be learning but to keep a small sense of normalcy. Maybe students having a little exposure to academics while they are gone will also help prevent a slide backwards over the next month or so.

Click the images below to find resources to assist you in creating your homework packets:

special education homework packets

Can you add to our homework packets collection?

You will find additional no prep printables focusing on word work at Cathy’s other site, Free Word Work .

If you have any free pages to share with teachers on teachers pay teachers or on your blog, please feel free to share the links in the comment section below. They must be completely free resources.

As with all of our resources, The Curriculum Corner creates these for free classroom use. Our products may not be sold. You may print and copy for your personal classroom use. These are also great for home school families!

You may not modify and resell in any form. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Life Skill Math Packets

You'll love these PRINT and GO math packs, already differentiated for three different skill levels, and over 600 worksheets to last you the entire year!

Life skill math topics include:  money, directions, more/less, size, time, numbers

Variety and Repetition:   This pack includes two different style worksheets for each topic and level. Students will quickly learn worksheet format as they go through each themed pack.

Multiple Steps:   Worksheets include multiple steps (cut/paste, color, etc) so that students do not fly through them and are able to work on a variety of concepts at the same time. If the multiple steps take too long for some students, you can tell them to do something quicker instead (ex. circle instead of color, or write instead of cut and paste).

Printing Options:   All worksheets can be printed in black and white or color as needed in order to provide additional levels of supports for students.

Each packet is designed to get you through (at least) two weeks of instruction, using one worksheet each day along with real life practice. You can use these packs in any order, as they do not get more difficult. This way students can learn (or maintain) at their own pace and you can move them up levels as needed. This is also great for homework once students have mastered the skills!
