The Lost Homework by Richard O'Neill, and Kirsti Beautyman

By Richard O'Neill, and and, Kirsti Beautyman

In this new addition to our ‘Travellers’ Tales’ series, Sonny devotes his weekend to helping his neighbours and fellow Travellers with a variety of tasks. He uses many skills, from telling a story at a wedding, to restoring a caravan. In fact, the only thing he doesn’t do over the weekend is his homework – his workbook is missing!

Once upon a time there once was this family that was going to France and when they got on the ferry the mum said why don’t we go to the cafe the mum got ever one a hot chocolate when the kids finished drinking the boy saw the ferry but small and he whanted it and the dad told the girl to get him it and she went to she got it for him and when she got it she was lost she ask a member of the ship and she asked her if she could take her to the cafe and she did and she saw her parents the end fiction.

It was kinda long but very funny

I love this book so much!

It was a nice book I would tell my friends about it

There’s a boy who had a busy weekend and didn’t get time to do his homework. On Monday his mum gave him a note to give to his teacher but turns out that she worked out that the boy did all of the other subjects on his busy weekend except from his homework. I’d reccomend it to someone else.

We learn lots of things from life

i really like the story

i feel so sorry for that boy

It was a fiction book. Sonny lives on a Traveller community site with his family and he’s super excited because this weekend they’re going to a family wedding. There’s so much to prepare: the horse needs to be shoed, everyone has to get their outfits ready and the cart has to be cleaned because the bride and groom will ride in it! Sonny is kept so busy by the preparations and the wedding itself that he doesn’t realise until too late that he’s lost his homework book. Disaster! Yet when he goes to school and tells everyone about the weekend, his kind teacher points out that he’s done plenty of learning in the course of his weekend: planning the route and calculating the journey time, performing on stage, sewing and painting and all manner of other things.Who'd have thought all this homestuff would've been school stuff too? I recommend this book.

I liked it very much

Made me happy

I loved reading this book

ti is ok but was not my type

i liked this book because everyone was kind but i did not like it when sonny lostv his homework.

It was awesome reading this book. I enjoyed it.

Spoiler alert...the homework book was never found!

I like whe he said that was a great story

I liked this book

A good books about how we learn things with out knowing it.

I like working to

It was an ok read.

I liked the book very much in particular the wedding because Sonny told a funny story to all the guests. The book made me happy when I read it because it was funny. I liked Sonny best because he does his homework immediately when he gets home and this shows he loves school and works very hard and this shows he is a very hardworking person. I would recommend this book to someone else because it teaches you about homework and how important it is to do it.

We enjoyed learning about different ways we could do our homework

I think some of the words in the story were a different language and I like Sonny because he is smart like me and I would recommend this book to others because they might learn that learning is not always done in school.

i liked the main character

THE LOST HOMEWORK

From the travellers' tales series.

by Richard O'Neill ; illustrated by Kirsti Beautyman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 2019

The difference between homework and home work? Nothing, in this case! (Picture book. 6-8)

So busy is a young Traveler’s weekend that he doesn’t realize until too late that he’s misplaced his homework book.

In the latest of a string of episodes richly infused with Traveler culture, O’Neill ( Polonius the Pit Pony , 2018, etc.) pitches bitti mush (little man) Sonny into preparations for a cousin’s wedding that begin with cleaning the special cart and continue through watching a farrier make a new shoe for the driving gry (cart horse) to planning the road trip, dancing after the wedding, telling stories, and more. Afterward, he helps an older neighbor send an email message and makes popovers for Sunday dinner, among other activities. The next day, after fruitlessly searching for his book, Sonny glumly recounts the events of the weekend to the teacher and his class—who point out that his weekend’s included science (with the farrier), “food tech,” music, English, and every other subject too. The author slips Romani words into the narrative without italicizing them but does provide a glossary. Though Sonny lives in a kushti atchin tan (settled community) Beautyman evokes the Traveler way of life by tucking campers or motor homes into the backgrounds of several scenes. Sonny, olive-skinned and dark-haired, joins neighbors and relatives who display a range of skin tones; his classmates reflect the vigorous diversity of today’s British Isles.

WAITING IS NOT EASY!

WAITING IS NOT EASY!

From the elephant & piggie series.

by Mo Willems ; illustrated by Mo Willems ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 4, 2014

A lesson that never grows old, enacted with verve by two favorite friends

Gerald the elephant learns a truth familiar to every preschooler—heck, every human: “Waiting is not easy!”

When Piggie cartwheels up to Gerald announcing that she has a surprise for him, Gerald is less than pleased to learn that the “surprise is a surprise .” Gerald pumps Piggie for information (it’s big, it’s pretty, and they can share it), but Piggie holds fast on this basic principle: Gerald will have to wait. Gerald lets out an almighty “GROAN!” Variations on this basic exchange occur throughout the day; Gerald pleads, Piggie insists they must wait; Gerald groans. As the day turns to twilight (signaled by the backgrounds that darken from mauve to gray to charcoal), Gerald gets grumpy. “WE HAVE WASTED THE WHOLE DAY!…And for WHAT!?” Piggie then gestures up to the Milky Way, which an awed Gerald acknowledges “was worth the wait.” Willems relies even more than usual on the slightest of changes in posture, layout and typography, as two waiting figures can’t help but be pretty static. At one point, Piggie assumes the lotus position, infuriating Gerald. Most amusingly, Gerald’s elephantine groans assume weighty physicality in spread-filling speech bubbles that knock Piggie to the ground. And the spectacular, photo-collaged images of the Milky Way that dwarf the two friends makes it clear that it was indeed worth the wait.

ARE YOU BIG?

WHAT THE ROAD SAID

by Cleo Wade ; illustrated by Lucie de Moyencourt ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 23, 2021

Inspiration, shrink wrapped.

From an artist, poet, and Instagram celebrity, a pep talk for all who question where a new road might lead.

Opening by asking readers, “Have you ever wanted to go in a different direction,” the unnamed narrator describes having such a feeling and then witnessing the appearance of a new road “almost as if it were magic.” “Where do you lead?” the narrator asks. The Road’s twice-iterated response—“Be a leader and find out”—bookends a dialogue in which a traveler’s anxieties are answered by platitudes. “What if I fall?” worries the narrator in a stylized, faux hand-lettered type Wade’s Instagram followers will recognize. The Road’s dialogue and the narration are set in a chunky, sans-serif type with no quotation marks, so the one flows into the other confusingly. “Everyone falls at some point, said the Road. / But I will always be there when you land.” Narrator: “What if the world around us is filled with hate?” Road: “Lead it to love.” Narrator: “What if I feel stuck?” Road: “Keep going.” De Moyencourt illustrates this colloquy with luminous scenes of a small, brown-skinned child, face turned away from viewers so all they see is a mop of blond curls. The child steps into an urban mural, walks along a winding country road through broad rural landscapes and scary woods, climbs a rugged metaphorical mountain, then comes to stand at last, Little Prince–like, on a tiny blue and green planet. Wade’s closing claim that her message isn’t meant just for children is likely superfluous…in fact, forget the just .

What Kind of Book is .css-1msjh1x{font-style:italic;} The Lost Homework

This story just felt discombobulated to me--I didn't remember the point of the story until the end, which does tie it all together. The text has some grammar issues as well as some difficult vocabulary.

Storytime: The Lost Homework by Richard O’Neill

Rosa Cisneros reads a story about a young boy from a Roma community as part of our Coventry Welcomes celebrations

As part of our Coventry Welcomes festival celebrations, we’re delighted to be working with Rosa Cisneros of the Roma Project and Coventry University’s Centre for Dance Research for today’s Storytime .

With this month marking Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month , she chose to read The Lost Homework , a story written by Richard O’Neill and illustrated by Kirsti Beautyman which offers children a beautiful insight into the Roma traveller community.

Earlier this year, we worked with Rosa to present an online preview of a photographic exhibition titled Generations , which we hope to showcase in full when we reopen. The exhibition features photos of Roma families in Coventry, and you can check it out here . You can also find out more about our Coventry Welcomes programme here .
