Waste management and recycling has been a widely addressed area in the world of scarcity in terms of resources. The first world has already been able to awaken the society and has established a social green movement. Sustainable development cannot be imagined if the resources are not properly utilized. Recycling non-biodegradable wastages such as plastic bottles can help in saving the environment as well as reusing them as resources. This paper aims at analyzing the existing practice of waste management processes, comparing the practice with a first world city i.e. London, provides techniques to collect them successfully, by the contribution of local government in this regard and eventually triggering a social movement in order to initiate a social green movement in Bangladesh. The paper also attempts to propose a Waste Management Triangle for a successful waste management process. This comparative analysis has been done mainly by using secondary data from internet, particularly from Youtube, and from observation of the author in different towns in Bangladesh and in London.

A massive volume of solid waste is generated every day in the city areas and unfortunately solid waste management is being deteriorated day by day due to the limited resources in handling the increasing rate of generated waste. Sustainable management for commercial solid waste is a concerning fact in Khulna city to lessen environment pollution and health problems which are also contribute to the climate changes. This study helps to scrutiny the existing management process and introduces a new proposal of management process to abate environmental pollution. The study has been conducted in the third largest city in the country Khulna, located in the southern part of Bangladesh to determine the generation rates, physical composition and characterization of commercial solid waste (CSW) and to identify the current situation of commercial solid waste management. A structured questionnaire was processed and waste collected from different waste generating sources was segregated and weighed. Commercial solid waste generation rate was found 0.44kg/person/day and an average commercial unit generated 3.93 kg of waste per day. In the generation of CSW, vegetable/food waste was highest (44%) followed by 17% of packaging material and 13% of plastic/polythene/rubber and lowest (2%) found as can/metal/tin. By weight, 51% of the waste was compostable in nature. It is necessary to take initiatives by both public and private sectors for effective management of waste.

Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh, with the highest population density (129,501 people/square km) in the world. Municipal solid waste (MSW) generation in the city is 4634.52 tons/day. This study aims to explore current MSW management scenario which is found one of the most underestimated sectors of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) – the responsible authority for MSW management. Overall operational and collection efficiency of DCC MSW management is 45% and 60%, respectively. Vehicle fleet for waste transport showed considerably low efficiency in terms of load carrying capacity and fuel consumption. Residential waste is found potential source of composting. At present, a 500 tons/day compost plant has been operating since September 1998. Worth of recoverable recyclable material is found US$ 82,428,449.9989. Open dumping is a pressing problem leading to groundwater pollution, environmental contamination and emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Each day, approximately, 1800 tons of MSW is dumped in the only official landfill site – Matuail. DCC spends 1.5% (601,350 Bangladesh Taka (BDT)/day) of the total budget for landfilling operation and management. Land required for disposal of MSW in Dhaka is estimated to be 110 ha per year. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in waste sector in Bangladesh are found promising. This study urge to prepare a detailed plan for sustainable MSW management in Dhaka for source separation, large scale investment on composting and Waste to Energy (WTE) projects, recycling, state of the art landfill development, and optimized reverse logistic operation
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is one of the densely populated megacities over the Asian countries where solid waste generation is increasing at an unprecedented rate. This study was intended to explore the status of solid waste disposal and management p Mohammadpur and Uttara where a survey design was used to collect the necessary information. The study showed the worsening situation in waste of dustbins, poor responsibility of city authority, improper waste collection & management systems, inadequate trained workers and identified the necessities to implement proper waste in order to reduce environmental pollution, sustainable urban development. waste management system in Dhaka city there needs a conjunct government and private sectors whereas community based waste management practices could play a vital role.

Rapid urbanization combined with high economic growth, industrialization, and changes in socio-economic conditions increase the quantity of municipal solid waste. Cities located in South-Asia are facing serious issues due to waste, with countries like India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan top of the list of bad waste management. The increasing generation of solid waste and also the improper management of waste in Bangladesh leads to environmental degradation. Current waste management practice in Bangladesh is so weak that day by day it is harming the climate and creating a lot of unwanted situations. This research consists of an examination of the current administrative measures and presents another proposition for the executive cycle to decrease ecological contamination. The research study aims to decrease the amount of waste being dumped into municipal sanitary landfill sites & converting the waste into energy which is both financially and environmentally suitable by involving unemploye...

Bangladesh is a densely populated country in the third world facing myriads of problems with the growth of population. The increased population leads to the growth of urban areas and slums which, in turn, generating a huge volume of waste. The huge generations of waste in different cities of Bangladesh like Khulna city increasing global anxiety day by day. In order to conduct the research, both primary and secondary data has been used. This paper highlights the status of waste generation and its management and a novel management process is proposed to increase the capacity. The waste generation rate of KCC is now 0.50 kg/cap/day producing around 950 tons of wastes, where about 36.84% being uncollected. The rubbishes, which remain uncollected, are dumped in open spaces, street and drains, clogging the drainage system, which create serious environmental degradation and treats to health. Moreover, the population growth rate is around 5% per year and waste generation rate will be about 1.7 times in 2025. Most of the urban local bodies are finding it difficult to keep pace with the demand for adequate solid waste management and conservancy services provided by the urban local bodies. So, both public and private sectors should take proper initiatives for effective solid waste management. The study addresses the overall waste management and drainage system of the Municipalities of Bangladesh. It also endeavors to compare the existing system with the requirements of making a sustainable city following the targets of SDG. It tries to highlight the shortcomings of the existing system of waste management and argues that this is never able to confine sustainability in the environment and the habitats of the Municipalities. The study is empirical in nature mainly based on primary data. Data have been collected from the officials and stakeholders of the three selected Municipalities of a North-west district of Bangladesh- Rajshahi through face to face interview and Focus Group Discussion. This paper identifies the fragile solid waste management capacity of the Municipalities of Bangladesh and argues that current practice is nothing but an inevitable setback for the country to achieve sustainable development.

The plastic-derived product, nowadays, becomes an indispensable commodity for different purposes. A huge amount of used plastic causes environmental hazards that turn in danger for marine life, reduces the fertility of soil, and contamination of ground water. Management of this enormous plastic waste is challenging in particular for developing countries like Bangladesh. Lack of facilities, infrastructure development, and insufficient budget for waste management are some of the prime causes of improper plastic management in Bangladesh. In this study, the route of plastic waste production and current plastic waste management system in Bangladesh have been reviewed extensively. It emerges that no technical and improved methods are adapted in the plastic management system. A set of the sustainable plastic management system has been proposed along with the challenges that would emerge during the implementation these strategies. Successful execution of the proposed systems would enhance the quality of plastic waste management in Bangladesh and offers enormous energy from waste.
