2 Minute Speech On Hockey In English
Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on hockey. India’s national sport is hockey. It is also a well-liked and fascinating game that is played in many different nations. Each team must abide by the game’s various rules in order for it to be played fairly. This game is played in many different variations all around the world. However, everywhere follows the same fundamental guidelines. India’s track record is quite good if we are talking about it. India has won numerous consecutive games and six Olympic gold medals.
It’s a long-running tradition in India to play this antiquated game. Additionally, a stick and a ball are always used to play the game. It was played in Ireland before 1272 BC, and in ancient Greece during the year 600 BC. The sport known as ice hockey, field hockey, street hockey, sled hockey, and roller hockey has numerous variants all throughout the world.
Given that India has designated it as its national sport, the game is quite significant there. Additionally, India has a long and richly established tradition in sports. Additionally, it is the oldest game that is known to have existed in India, and the nation has produced many outstanding players.
In conclusion, although it has never been formally acknowledged, hockey is India’s national sport. But if we reinstate hockey’s Golden Age, we can formally announce this. Government backing for our hockey club is currently lacking, but with our help, they can restore hockey’s heyday. Thank you.

Banquet Speech: Agency and Possibility
How do you sum up an entire season and try to leave your players with an inspiring message? Here’s one Coach’s attempt after the 2021-2022 season.
I was fortunate enough to lead an incredible group of U13 players this season and it was important for me to leave them with a message of agency and possibility.
Before we officially bring this season to a close, and in the interest of time I am going to condense it as much as I possibly can, I will try to stay on topic and leave things out like…only 47% of girls ages 13-15 participate in sport, and the number is even lower for the 16-18 age group sitting around 38%…and I also won’t list all of the reasons why these numbers are bad, very bad, AND I’ll also try to refrain from focusing on our responsibility as citizens, taxpayers, and leaders to ensure there are inclusive and accessible options for girls to participate in sport in our communities…or maybe I’ll just talk about it for a little bit in a few seconds, but…
Player Thank You First and foremost, thank you to this tremendous group of athletes. You showed up week after week and put forward an effort that YOU should be proud of. I hope you learned to push yourselves, to get past the point where it’s hard, and to know that when you land on the other side, you’ve changed and that you recognize something new about yourself. The drills were supposed to be hard—the line skates are supposed to boarder on the edge of pushing yourself through the sometimes agonizing burn of your lactic threshold, and the psychological challenge of not wanting to do it. We designed this season with intention—and purposely included a balance of fun activities to build team spirit, confidence, and friendships. COVID often tried to diminish our efforts, but you all persevered through the challenges. The last full season of hockey that this group played was in 2018-2019—that means when you were in grade 3 or 4. What an incredible amount of change that has happened since then, and that is parallel to the amount of growth that occurred this season. Let’s be honest, we started the season with A LOT of…opportunity ahead of us…and it took us a while to get sorted to the ways of hockey…such as the fact that the left side of the rink changes in the second period—still occasionally tripped us up…but we got there…we went from Georgina beating us baaaad (I have a mental block on the score), to tying them at the end of the season. And I KNOW if we had that COVID month back we would have been able to beat them. I KNOW this. I am proud of you, but as I said off the top, YOU should be proud of YOU. This team is but a very small part in your very big lives, and I know each and everyone of you is going to do amazing things.
Seeing is Believing Visibility and representation matter. To become it, you first have to see it. As females in a female hockey organization you should have voice and agency in your organization. We are here to promote and support females in hockey—you are the females. This is your association. We can see horrible things happening south of our boarder where women are losing autonomy over their own bodies and decisions are being made about what they can and cannot do, and at the risk of making this sound politically charged, I will say it starts here. Understanding your role in creating your own future is a product of your life–the experiences you have, the situations you are in, the way people talk to you, or make decisions for you, all of this informs the way you understand the world. It suggested that ‘sport’ is a great equalizer that spans gender, race, and socio-economic status, but we know this isn’t quite true. And I’ll get my stats back out if anyone wants to know the numbers.
Hockey is Life Hockey is a window into society. We sing the virtues of hockey participation—better team players, time management skills, willingness to try new things, resiliency—all the characteristics that we associate with being a productive and contributing member of society. But what we fail to acknowledge, even in a girls hockey association, is that females are treated differently. And this is why I am passionate about hockey. Hockey is my small nugget of the world, it’s my passion, it’s my thing, it is where I show up and try to share my experience with others. I’ve had my time in the spotlight, my playing days are long, long gone, but what I can do now is offer a chance for you to see that there are opportunities in hockey that span beyond gender; to look up and see your coach is a woman, the referee is a woman; to ensure you have agency and voice in your teams; and to know that other women are showing up to support you, because the lessons you learn here about your capability, possibilities, and your positionality in the world, are carried off the ice and into your lives.
Challenge Everything and Know What’s Possible You will be cut from teams, you will be passed over for promotions that you deserve, people will say hurtful, untrue things about you, and you will see others who have less ability, less experience, and less qualifications elevated into positions on the basis of who they know rather than what they have accomplished, heck this might even happen in the course of one hockey season, but it is our responsibility to continue to challenge these decisions and to ask ‘why?’ You cannot settle for someone else’s assessment on your ability, and you need to know that gender is not a defining feature of your ability. After nine months with us leading this team, I hope you know it is possible. And while this season is over, I will see you on the ice this Sunday, and I hope you remember everything I said about it purposefully being hard.

5 Fantastic Motivational Sporting Speeches
Motivational speeches have been a source of inspiration (and a catalyst for change) for almost as long as humans have existed.
From Alexander the Great, who encouraged his soldiers to stand up and continue fighting after a gruesome battle against the Paurava kingdom in 326 BC to George Washington’s infamous resignation speech in 1784, the use of one’s words and voice to inspire others has shaped history and greatly contributed to the world as we know it today.
In the world of sports, speeches are used to motivate and inspire players, acting as an impetus that drives them to perform at their best.
But motivational sporting speeches are not applicable to athletes alone. The themes that are shared in these speeches are universally relatable, making them relevant to individuals from all walks of life.
Whether it’s overcoming adversity, rising to the challenge or the importance of teamwork, sports players, coaches, and other athletic professionals have an abundance of wisdom to share.
Thus, in today’s blog, we’ll be sharing some of the best sports speeches and quotes from the past. We hope they inspire you as much as they inspire us!
1. Herb Brooks – 1980 Olympic Hockey Pre-Game Speech
Herbert Paul Brooks was a hockey player and coach from Minnesota. He is best known for coaching the U.S. Olympic hockey team in 1980 to one of the greatest upsets in American sports history when they defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union at Lake Placid. The team was not expected to win since the Soviets had defeated the U.S. 10-3 in their final exhibition game at Madison Square Garden. But Brooks was not willing to go down without a fight, giving an extremely powerful speech before his players hit the ice — an address that many of his players credited for the team’s victory. The speech was so memorable and moving it was featured in the blockbuster film, Miracle , with Kurt Russell playing Brooks.
Below is a quote from Brooks’ motivational sports speech:
“Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here, tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we played ’em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It’s over. I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ’em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.”

2. Jim Valvano – 1993 ESPY Awards Speech
Many of the world’s most significant speeches came from a place of pain or hardship, and inspirational sports speeches are no different. Jim Valvano, coach of the North Carolina State University basketball team, gave such a speech at the Excellence in Sports Yearly Awards (ESPYs) in 1993 after he’d been diagnosed with a terminal type of glandular cancer. The speech was meant to encourage his audience to live their lives to the fullest and eventually went down in history as one of the most important inspirational coach speeches of all time.
Here is a quote from his lecture:
“There are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”

3. Billy Donovan – 2006 NCAA Championship Game
Billy Donovan was the Florida Gator’s men’s basketball team in 2006— a team that had struggled the year prior. Under Donovan’s guidance, however, they were able to reach the championship game. Before the game started, Donovan spoke to his players, delivering a forceful sermon about seizing the moment.
Below is a quote from his speech, which is considered by many to be one of the most inspirational sports speeches ever given:
“Tonight is not about the past and it’s not about the future. It’s about right now, and you guys have got to want this night to last forever.”

4. LeBron James – 2018 AAU North Coast Blue Chips Speech
LeBron James is one of the greatest names in NBA history with three championships under his belt and three Olympic gold medals amongst a long list of other achievements. But one of James’ most memorable speeches actually occurred while he was attending his 13-year-old son’s Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) game in 2018. Before the game began, James took the opportunity to share one of his greatest lessons with the young players— that teamwork really does make the dream work. His words instantly became one of his most admired sports inspirational speeches.
Here is a quote from the address:
“Many Hall of Famer’s and some of the best players to ever play the game have come off the bench— or didn’t play. That don’t mean you aren’t good. There are guys in the NBA that don’t play. Does that mean they aren’t good? No. They are playing a role. If you don’t want a role, play tennis or play golf. Because then you can do whatever [expeletive] you want to do, and you’ve got no one else to blame because it’s an individual sport. But if you want to play a team sport, there’s going to be things you’ve got to give up to get what you want.”
You can watch the clip in its entirety here .
5. Dave Belisle – 2014 Little League World Series Speech
Coaching a team is always a responsibility that mentors take seriously. But when you’re coaching 12-year-old boys, that responsibility becomes even more heartfelt and profound. Dave Belisle knows this first-hand as he was the coach of the Cumberland, Rhode Island team that lost their championship Little League game to Jackie Robinson West of Chicago, Illinois in 2014. Seeing the defeat on his young player’s faces, Belisle gathered his team for some final words, which eventually went down in history as one of the most touching motivational sporting speeches in baseball history.
“The only reason why I’m shedding a tear is because this is the last time I’m going to end up coaching you guys. I’m going to bring back with me, and the coaching staff is going to bring back with them, something that no one other team can provide but you guys. That’s pride. Pride.
You’re going to take that for the rest of your life, what you provided for our town in Cumberland. You had the whole place jumping. You had the whole state jumping. You had New England jumping. You had ESPN jumping. Want to know why? They like fighters. They like sportsmen. They like guys who don’t quit. They like guys who play the game the right way.
If everyone would play baseball like the Cumberland Americans, this would be the greatest game. When you walk around this ballpark in the next couple of days, they’re going to look at you and say, “Hey, guys, you guys were awesome.”

Essay on Hockey
Our National Game Hockey
Field Hockey is the National Sport of our Country. The designation of ‘National Sport’ is either designated on the basis of the popularity of a Game, or on the basis of the Game’s historical background. Hockey has a long-standing rich legacy, and this fact also gives this Sport the credibility of being the ‘National Game’ of our Country, India. Added to this, another obvious reason for designating this Sport as the National Sport of the Country, for the pride that is always evoked by the Countrymen.
In order to play this Game, this Game is required to be conducted either on plain grass or on a mat-like material called the turf. India displayed phenomenal performance in Hockey at various International forums during the 1920-1950s period and this was yet another reason for accepting this Game as a National Sport in this Country.
Playing field Hockey is a popularly played Sport in our Country, which is played by forming teams. This Game is played on grass, on artificial or watered turf, or on synthetic fields. The team has ten players in total and a Goalkeeper.
Hockey is played with a curved stick in the form of the letter ‘J’. The aim here is to move the ball forward to the Goal post with the curved end of the stick and thereby scoring a Goal. The strikers who play this Game are exceptionally skilled at hitting the targets, this will help them to shoot their shots successfully and make them enter the Goal post. While the Goalkeeper gets the responsibility of hurdling and stopping the Goals so that they can stop the opposite team from scoring.
Hockey is a Sport that requires a lot of practice and dedication. The Game is played usually on a rectangular field, and this is considered to be an outdoor Sport. The Goalkeeper stands near the Goal post wearing a heavily padded jersey and helmets also with a curved Hockey stick. The Goalkeeper is required to wear protective suits because the ball, striking with the Hockey stick, rushes towards the Goal post at a highly accelerated speed, if the Goalkeeper does not wear a padded suit this may cause severe injuries to the Goalkeeper.
The Game starts with a toss between the captains of the two distinct teams. The captain who wins the toss will either select his side of the field where his team will play or he chooses to pass. The Game is played for 75 minutes in a single session. There are two rounds of each thirty-five minutes and one break in between the two sessions. The interval time is used for medications, strategic planning, also for treatment.

Hockey is ranked as my favourite Game. The Game is the most interesting outdoor Game in my view, as there is too much life and energy going on in the Game. Hockey keeps all the players busy, both physically as well as mentally. This is a very popular Game all over the world and considered as the National Sport of my Country, India.
In this Sport, there are two teams who play against each other and they both try to score by posting the Goal in the Goalpost. At present, there are different forms of Hockey i.e.- Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, Sledge Hockey, and even Street Hockey.
India made an impressive record with many Olympic gold medals, in the year 1928-1956, this is known as the Golden Era of Hockey in India. India won 6 consecutive gold medals in this Olympic Games.

12 Best Motivational Sports Speeches To Inspire Kids
These are guaranteed to give your kid a boost before the big game or pick them up after a tough loss.
Kids need words of wisdom. But even the very best coaches are sometimes at a loss for words. Not everyone who has kids in sports is a Ted Lasso, and even Ted Lasso borrows inspiration from other people!
Some of the best sports speeches seemingly apply to every situation: the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, the importance of teamwork , and the discipline required to reach great heights. With this in mind, we gathered some of the best inspirational speeches available on YouTube, delivered by pro athletes, coaches, and even a little kid who dropped some knowledge after taking a tumble off his bike. Don’t be surprised to find yourself fired up and ready for another attempt, whether that’s in the boardroom or batting cages.
1. Apollos Hester’s Postgame Interview
East View High’s Apollos Hester is coveted by college scouts for his incredible speed and agility, great hands, and optimistic attitude about life’s limitless potential. As is obvious from this great sport speech, the Texan is also one hell of a motivational speaker. This speech marked the first time in history a teenager thought they knew more than every adult in the world and was actually correct.
Choice Quote: “Regardless of the situation, regardless of the scoreboard, you’re going to be successful because you’ve put in all the time, all the effort, all the hard work, and you know that it’s going to pay off.”
2. Coach Dave Belisle’s Little League World Series Speech
Eleven- and 12-year-old boys aren’t naturally gracious losers, so when the Cumberland Americans were eliminated from the 2014 Little League World Series by just one run, a national TV audience could have witnessed an all-time adolescent meltdown. Instead, coach Dave Belisle delivered an all-time “heads up high” speech that turned tears of sadness into tears of joy. It’s a masterclass in how to handle disappointment.
Choice Quote : “It’s okay to cry because we’re not going to play baseball together anymore. But we’re going to be friends forever.”
3. Kevin Durant’s 2013-2014 MVP Speech
In Durant’s 2013–14 NBA MVP acceptance speech, he takes time to acknowledge all the hard work, setbacks, and sacrifices he endured to arrive at the moment as well as the friends, family, coaches, teammates, and supporters who helped him along the way. It’s the sports speech version of the famous Hillary Clinton “It takes a village” quote, and it’s a beautifully articulated and touching way of acknowledging what it truly takes to be great.
Choice Quote : “So many people believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. So many people doubted me and motivated me every single day to be who I am. I failed so many times and got back up. I’ve been through the toughest times with my family, but I’m still standing.”
4. This Little Kid’s Speech After Learning to Ride a Bike
If your kid won’t take it from you, let ’em take it from one of their own. Hell, you take it from one of their own. With enough confidence in yourself, you’ll know how to deliver an inspirational speech to your child. If you don’t, you’ll get there with practice. Also, shout out to the dad who perfectly set up the kid to deliver the ultimate attaboy for every training wheel-hating kid.
Choice Quote : “Thumbs up, everybody! For rock and roll!”
5. Darrel Green’s NFL Hall of Fame Speech
Green’s NFL Hall of Fame acceptance speech is remembered as one of the most passionate of all time. It’s absolutely riveting — and full of excellent advice for parents and children alike. Plus, it rhymes, so it’s easy to remember.
Choice Quote : “They said, ‘No,’ and he said, ‘Go.’ The best encouragement you can ever get in life is when a dad encourages his son. Encourage your son. That’s what he did for us.”
6. Coach Flowers’ JV Championship Speech
Playing “Last of the Mohicans” as your personal background music while barking scripted notes like DMX to fire up the junior varsity squad might seem a little overboard. And, well, that may be the case. Still, admit you’d love to see a gang of 6-year-olds scream, “I am champion!” before tripping over a soccer ball for 40 minutes.
Choice Quote : “No one will deny me, no one will define me. And no one will tell me who and what I am and can be. Belief will change my world.”

At their best, sports can teach life’s greatest lessons. In his acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the first ESPY Awards in 1993, Jim Valvano, basketball player, coach, and broadcaster, delivered a masterclass in that premise. Ten years after leading North Carolina State to an NCAA championship in the greatest upset ever and then battling late-stage, terminal cancer, Jimmy V outlined his blueprint for a fulfilling life in three simple rules: Laugh, think, and cry. Every day. Do it, and you’ll indeed be fulfilled.
Choice Quote : “There are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two: think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears — could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”
8. Tony Romo’s 2016 Press Conference About Dak Prescott
After a back injury and lots of missed time, Tony Romo lost his dream job — starting NFL quarterback. His backup, Dak Prescott, proved himself worthy of the starting job with his play. In a press conference, Romo addresses the situation with grace and eloquence. Instead of sulking or complaining, he speaks from the heart about the darkness of not being able to play, gives thanks for the people who helped him when he was younger, and promises to do the same for his protégé. In light of his present gig as an in-demand NFL commentator, it’s obvious his advice has paid off.
Choice Quote: “There are special moments that come from a shared commitment to play a role while doing it together that’s what you remember not your stats or your prestige but the relationships and the achievement that you created through a group.”
9. Coach Tony Arcuri’s 2007 Pregame Speech to the Indian Hill Braves High School Football Team.
This is an important lesson for your kid, who almost certainly will face an opponent (or teammate, for that matter) who is bigger, stronger, and/or faster than they are.
Choice Quote : “They’re bigger. They got athletes, they got guys going to Division 1 schools. All right? We can see that and so can everybody else. But nobody can see the intangible in us. Be the intangible tonight!”
10. Drew Brees’ Speech After Breaking Dan Marino’s Record
In 2011, Drew Brees set the record for most passing yards in a season and gave this motivational sports speech to his coaches and teammates after the game. Choice Quote: “There may be only one name that goes in the record book, but it’s all about you guys.”
11. Herb Brooks’ Miracle Pregame Speech
Yes, this speech is from a movie, which violates this list’s only rule. Herb Brooks’ speech before the 1980 Men’s U.S. Olympic hockey team pulled off the “Miracle on Ice” happened behind closed doors. But none of that matters because Junior can’t lose — not this game, not tonight. Also, because the movie recreation, Miracle, led to this kid reciting Brooks’ speech .
Choice Quote : “This is your time. Now go out there and take it!”
12. Jason McElwain’s Scoring Spree
Because your play should speak for itself.
Choice Quote : [Crowd loses its mind as autistic team manager rains threes to score 20 points in four minutes]

Cherished members of the youth hockey community, we honor the memory and enduring legacy of gene harrington, a remarkable individual whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of countless young athletes and families. gene harrington, a man of diverse talents and boundless enthusiasm, exemplified what it means to be a devoted husband, father, coach, counselor, teacher, and sportsman. his multifaceted nature and unwavering dedication made him an extraordinary individual, leaving an indelible mark on the world of youth sports., in particular, gene’s heart beat strongly for the world of hockey. he poured his passion into coaching and organizing tournaments for children, driven by a deep-seated love for both the game and the kids he mentored. his impact extended far beyond the rink, resonating with the children he coached, the parents he guided, and anyo ne for tunate enough to cross his path. gene harrington was not just unforgettable; he was an embodiment of compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment., anyone who knew him could write a book trying to describe him. perhaps you can best pictur e him through his own wor ds. we share gene’s speech he gave as an inductee to the amherst hockey hall of fame in 1989 which reflects a coaching philosophy that permeated his life., i have met many coaches in the last twenty years, some great, some fair, and som e poor. sad to say the poor ones far outnumber the fair and great ones. i have found the main reasons most adults coach is they do not trust anyone else with their kids and their own ego. unfortunately, we are in a time when winning is more important than competing, and there is an ever present specter of coaches seeing their players and fathers seeing their sons, as extensions of their own egos., vince lombardi’s most quoted expression, “winning isn’t everything, it is the only thing.” what most coaches and parents forget is vince worked with professionals. what is generally unknown, he was a tremendous teacher, great motivator, and organizer. he was an inspirational leader and always showed concern for the welfare of his players on and off the field. if i had to compare him to a hockey personality it would be bobby clark..
Hockey has given me great enjoyment in life, which I have tried to give back to the players as a coach. My advice for those coaching kids today:
Always, always make hockey fun, teach attitude first, skills second. this includes respect for rules, the authority of officials, and consideration of opponents., demand they become gentlemen before hockey players., teach them to be humble in victory and proud in defeat., teach them to care about each teammate and the worth of caring is worth it., teach them to live up to their potential, no matter what their potential is. this means teaching them to do their best and never be satisfied with what they are, but to strive to be as good as they can be if they try harder., i have said many times over the last twenty years, “you can never make a great player out of a boy who is not potentially great. but you can make him a great competitor, and miraculously, you can make a man out of a boy.”.
Reflecting on Gene Harrington’s profound insights, we find ourselves in the ever-evolving landscape of youth sports and coaching, more than three decades after his heartfelt speech. In this modern era, Gene’s wisdom holds more relevance than ever, as we continue to shape the lives of not only boys but also girls, through the realm of sports.
In a world where diversity, equality, and inclusivity are valued as paramount, gene’s emphasis on nurturing character over victory remains a guiding beacon. the echoes of his advice—“always make hockey fun”—reverberate with deeper significance, reminding us that the joy of the game should be universal for every young athlete., as we coach, we must remember that the lessons extend beyond the ice, fostering attitudes of respect, humility, and empathy. the distinction between winning and competing is clearer than before, and the responsibility to instill values that transcend the scoreline rests upon us as coaches, parents, and mentors., gene harrington’s legacy reminds us that molding kids into not only skilled athletes but also compassionate individuals is a privilege and a duty. by embracing his philosophy of shaping “great competitors” and cultivating character, we forge resilient individuals who contribute positively to society, regardless of the outcome on the ice., in the spirit of gene harrington, let us continue to inspire the next generation with the wisdom that “you can make a man out of a boy” or “a woman out of a girl,” fostering their potential while nurturing their humanity. today, we extend gene’s profound message to all young hearts, forging a path of excellence and i ntegrity for generations to come..
Keep your eye out for more hockey wisdom from my family and I wish all the youth hockey coaches a great season. We also share lots of great hockey tips on our social media .
? Yours in Hockey

Essay on Hockey
500+ words essay on hockey.
Hockey is one of the oldest and most popular team sports. Hockey is believed to have been in existence about 1200 years before the Ancient Games of Olympia. This game is played in most countries of the world. In India, hockey was introduced by the British Army regiments, and soon it became popular. The Indian Hockey team has won a total of eight gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals in the Olympics. This essay on hockey will help students to understand the sport. Also, they get to know the rules for playing this sport. They can also go through the CBSE Essays to get the list of essay topics. It helps them in improving their writing skills, and they can score good marks in the writing section of the English exam.
History of Hockey
The Hockey Association was founded in 1886. The first international tournament took place in 1895, and the International Rules Board was founded in 1900. The International Hockey Federation is the global governing body of field hockey, founded on 7th January 1924 in Paris. The Federation of International Hockey (FIH) not only regulates the sport but is also responsible for its development and promotion so as to guarantee a secure future for hockey. The FIH retains overall responsibility for hockey worldwide, including the rules of hockey, umpiring and coaching.
The British brought the hockey game to India. The first hockey club was formed in Kolkata in 1885. The Indian hockey team won the first Olympic gold in 1928 at the Amsterdam Games. They made their Olympic debut without conceding a single goal. The credit for this win goes to the legend Dhyan Chand, who stole the heart of everyone with his dazzling skills. It was the golden era of Indian hockey when India produced some of the finest players in hockey.
How to Play Hockey?
The rules set by the International Hockey Federation FIH are used worldwide to play hockey games. Hockey is played between two teams of 11 players each, including a goalkeeper. Before starting the game, a coin is tossed between the captains of the two teams. The team captain that wins the toss has to choose the starting end or start with the ball. The game time is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, 15-02-15-10-15-2-15. At the start of each quarter, as well as after goals are scored, the match is started with a pass from the centre of the field.
Field players may only play the ball with the flat side of the stick. Tackling is permitted as long as the tackler does not make contact with the attacker or his stick before playing the ball. Further, the player is not allowed to deliberately use his body or stick to shield the ball from a legitimate tackle. A goal is scored when an attacker strikes the ball into the goal from within the striking circle, even if the ball touches the defender and goes into the goal.
When the ball passes over the sidelines, it is returned to play from the sideline either by an individual player by himself or with a push or hit, taken by a member of the team whose players were not the last to touch the ball before crossing the sideline. If it crosses the goal line after being last touched by an attacker, a 15-metre hit or pass can be made by any player in the defending team. A 15-metre hit is also awarded for offences committed by the attacking side within 15 metres of the end of the pitch they are attacking.
National Sports Day of India
The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August to commemorate Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. In 2012, the Government of India designated 29th August as the country’s “National Sports Day”. On this occasion, the President of India gives out all the sports-related awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Rajiv Khel Ratna Award. It is done to honour sportspersons and coaches who have made the nation proud with their service in their respective sports.
Hockey is a popular and interesting sport. But still, in India, it has not got much attention. There are very few people who have a passion for hockey and would like to be a part of the Indian hockey team. The Government of India should give more facilities and pay more attention to promoting hockey. It should be included in Physical Education, and proper coaching should be provided so students can start playing hockey at the school level.
Students must have found this essay on hockey useful for improving their essay-writing skills. They can get the study material and the latest updates on CBSE/ICSE/State Board/Competitive Exams at BYJU’S.

How to Talk Like a Hockey Player
Possibly more than any other sport, there is a unique culture that surrounds hockey. It’s a tightly knit group that is as dedicated to its sport as any in the world. As a result of this relationship, a unique corresponding ‘hockey slang’ has developed among players to describe hockey-specific things or events. If you’re not a member of the community, you would be clueless as to what hockey players are talking about when they use some of their off-the-wall terms.
Below you will find the common terms of hockey player lingo.
Hockey Player Lingo: A-Z
Apple: an assist.
Bar Down/Bar Mexico: a type of shot that hits the bottom of the crossbar and shoots right down into the net. All beauties (see below) attempt to go bar down whenever possible, as it is seen as a very impressive shot. Just listen to the sound as the puck hits the bar and goes in below.
Barn: rink or arena.
Barn Burner: used to describe a game that is high scoring, fast paced, and exciting to watch.
Beauty/Beautician : a player on the team that’s talented both on the ice and off and loved by the rest of the team. Typically has great flow, great hands, can wheel ladies off the ice (see below), and always has some good locker room stories.
Bender: a player who is awful at hockey, and whose ankles bend inwards because his skates don’t fit right, he didn’t tie them right, or he just can’t skate.
Biscuit: the puck.
Breadbasket: term that describes the goalie’s chest. Typically used when describing that you put a shot right in the goalie’s logo.
Bucket: a helmet
Celly: a celebration after a goal is scored. Depending on the score, stakes, and opponent, varying levels of cellying is acceptable.
Chel: the EA Sports NHL video game series.
Chiclets: teeth, usually used when describing the lack thereof for certain players.
Chirp: trash talk, directed toward an opponent, their bench or the refs.
Clapper: a slapshot, in reference to someone with a powerful slapshot or a slapshot that results in a goal.
Coast to Coast: a goal scored when a player starts the play near his own net.
Dinger: a pinch of chewing tobacco that players enjoy in the locker room before and after the game.
Duster/Dusty: may or may not also be a bender, but is definitely very bad at hockey, gets very little ice time, and when he does get out on the ice it’s at the end of the game when the score is out of hand.
Dusts it Off: when a defenceman quickly stickhandles the puck then dishes it off to a teammate.
Facewash: When a player sticks his gloves, palms first, into an opponents face just to annoy him.
Fishbowl: a helmet with a full plastic shield instead of a cage. Typically used as an insult in trash talk. Opinions vary widely on fishbowls, but if you wear one you’re likely one of the best players on the ice, or the worst.
Flow: great hockey hair, typically long that flows out of the helmet when the player skates.
For the Boys/FTB: used to describe any actions that the rest of the team enjoys or when a player makes a sacrifice for the team.
Gino: a goal (that is scored, not the net).
Gongshow: has multiple meanings: 1. used to describe the craziness that ensues when hockey players drink/party/go to the bar. 2. a game that gets completely out of hand with multiple fights, lots of penalties, and lots goals.
Gordie Howe Hat Trick: when players scores a goal, gets an assist and is in a fight, all in the same game ( details on the expression here.. )
Grinder: a player that populates the lower lines or lower pairings. Has hands of stone, but is physical and works hard when he’s out on the ice. Usually beloved by the rest of the team. See: Paul Bissonnette.
Grocery Stick: a player that sits on the bench the whole game between the forwards and defense, acting like a separator like the checkout line at the store. Also a duster, and maybe a bender.
Hoser: another name for a loser, typically intended as an insult in trash talk. Comes from the early hockey days when the losing team had to hose down the ice with water after the game because the Zamboni had not been invented yet.
Kronwalled: a big hit by a defenceman, named after Niklas Kronwall
Lay the Lumber on Him: a slash or hit with the stick
Lettuce: a great head of hockey hair. See also: flow, salad.
Light the Lamp: to score a goal, in reference to the red light that goes on behind the net.
Lip Sweater: mustache, typically grown out during the month of November for the “Movember” cause to support male health issues.
Lumber: a hockey stick, named when sticks used to be made of wood.
Mitts: refers to a player’s hands, often described as silky when a player has great skill. Also refers to a player’s gloves, as in “dropping the mitts” in a fight.
Muzzy: mustache. See also: lip sweater.
Packing a bomb: throwing in a lip of chewing tobacco in the locker room. See also: dinger.
Pigeon: describes a player that isn’t good enough to score goals by himself, so he picks up the trash of his more skilled linemates. Often used as trash talk, as made famous by Claude Giroux :
Playmaker: a player known for great stickhandling and passing, not necessarily scoring
Plumber: similar to a grinder, a player that loves to do the dirty work in the corners and go to the dirty areas. Not the most skilled player, but a hard worker.
Pylon: a player that is extremely slow out on the ice, and can easily be skated around. Likely a big guy. See: Mike Rathje, Derian Hatcher.
Ride the Pine: when a player spends the entire game sitting in the bench, and not getting any playing time. Usually reserved for benders and dusters.
Salad: beautiful hockey hair. See also: flow, lettuce.
Sauce or Saucy: a well-executed saucer pass (a pass that goes in the air and hits back on the ice right before getting to the recipient) that sits flat on the receiving player’s tape.
The Show: the NHL, used in the context of “making it to The Show”.
Sieve: an awful goalie that has many holes to shoot through.
Snipe: a powerful or well-placed shot that results in a pretty goal. Every bar down shot is a snipe, but not every snipe goes bar down.
Top Cheese/Cheddar: used to describe a shot that goes in off or right below the crossbar.
Turtle: when one of the players in a fight would rather not and just crouches or falls to his knees and covers himself.
Twig: hockey stick, even though none are made from wood anymore.
Wheeling: the act of picking up girls. To be a beauty (see above), you must be very good at being able to wheel girls.
Where Mama Keeps the Peanut Butter: goal scored in the uppermost part of the net.
Hockey player jargon is an ever-evolving language. Certain words will cease to be used, and new ones will become popular. But with this list as your basis, you’ll have at least have a simple understanding of hockey talk.

Need goon on here
How about “Schneid” (not sure on the spelling) as in when a player scores a goal after a long drought he’s “off the schneid”? You don’t hear that in other sports.
Wheel… Used on ice to tell your team mate to skate with the puck
A few more:
Cheesed (him) – when you beat the goalie high or go bardown on him, i.e., “Scotty cheesed the goalie, dude had no chance.”
Wheels – 1. Referring to skates or legs/feet. 2. Speed, as in, “Jimmy’s got wheels for days, no one’s catching him.”
Houdini – Pulling a move off by accident or using sleight of hand, fooling the defenseman/goalie in the process
How did you forget dangle? That’s one of the original words in hockey lingo.
Dont leave out these:
Bambi: A bad skater who is so bad they look like a deer just being born
BFI: Another word meaning garbage goal. Named after the garbage company BFI.
what about hoser you freaking hoser. Should probably explain what a saucer pass is too.
Forgot about Jabroni
Here’s a couple more. Barn for arena Lumber for sticks
Barn burner has been around for awhile and should be on this list.
I’ve always heard “Digger” rather than “Dinger” implying that the pinch is digging into one’s lip/gums. In all fairness there are numerous terms for a chew, and you tend to adapt from squad to squad. This is just friendly input. On a different note, a name for someone constantly “riding the pine” that I hear on occasion is a “grocery stick.” This player usually sits in the middle of the bench, separating the forwards and defensmen as though they were groceries on a check-out counter conveyor belt. He’s constantly being told to “cheek (right or left) for the boys” but never really makes it far from the bench. This is a gem of an article! It could go on for days, but I think you’ve covered the bulk of it.
Nice list- even a couple I was unfamiliar with!

How to Write a Senior Speech for Sports?
As a senior athlete, delivering a speech that highlights your accomplishments, experiences, and appreciation for your team is an important part of your farewell. It’s a chance to express your gratitude towards your coaches, teammates, and supporters, and leave a lasting impression on the sports community. However, writing a senior speech can be daunting, especially if you’re not sure where to start. In this article, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to write a senior speech for sports that will capture the essence of your athletic journey.
Reflect on Your Athletic Journey
Before you start writing your senior speech, take some time to reflect on your athletic journey. Think about the highs and lows, the challenges you faced, and the lessons you learned. Consider the moments that define your experience as a senior athlete, and the memories that will stay with you forever. This reflection will provide you with the motivation and inspiration you need to write a memorable speech.
When reflecting on your athletic journey, don’t forget to think about the people who have supported you along the way. Consider the coaches who have motivated you, the teammates who have become your friends, and the fans who have cheered you on. These people are an important part of your journey, and acknowledging their contribution in your speech will make it more meaningful.
Start with a Strong Opening
The opening of your senior speech should grab your audience’s attention and set the tone for the rest of your speech. You can start with a personal anecdote, a quote that inspires you, or a humorous story. The key is to make it engaging and memorable.
Once you have your audience’s attention, introduce yourself and give a brief overview of your athletic journey. This will provide context for the rest of your speech and give your audience an idea of what to expect.
Highlight Your Accomplishments
As a senior athlete, you’ve accomplished a lot, and your senior speech is the perfect opportunity to highlight your achievements. Share your proudest moments, your biggest wins, and the records you’ve broken. Be sure to mention any awards or recognition you’ve received, and thank the people who have helped you achieve your goals.
Express Your Gratitude
One of the most important elements of a senior speech is expressing gratitude towards the people who have supported you throughout your athletic journey. Take the time to thank your coaches, teammates, and supporters for their encouragement, guidance, and friendship. Be specific and mention the ways in which they have impacted your life.
Share Your Lessons Learned
Athletics is not just about winning, it’s also about learning. Share the lessons you’ve learned throughout your athletic journey, and how they have shaped you as a person. These lessons could be about perseverance, teamwork, or overcoming adversity. By sharing your experiences, you’ll inspire others to learn from your journey.
Offer Words of Wisdom
As a senior athlete, you have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with others. Offer some words of wisdom to your teammates, coaches, and the sports community as a whole. These could be tips for success, advice for overcoming challenges, or a message of hope for the future.
End with a Strong Closing
The closing of your senior speech should leave a lasting impression on your audience. You can end with a memorable quote, a call to action, or a personal message. The key is to make it powerful and inspiring.
Benefits of Writing a Senior Speech
Writing a senior speech is a valuable experience that offers many benefits. It allows you to reflect on your athletic journey, express your gratitude, and share your wisdom with others. It’s also a chance to leave a lasting legacy in the sports community and inspire others to follow in your footsteps.
Senior Speech vs. Graduation Speech
It’s important to note that a senior speech is different from a graduation speech. A senior speech is specific to sports and is delivered by a senior athlete, while a graduation speech is delivered by a student who is graduating from high school or college. While there may be some similarities in terms of content, the focus of a senior speech is on athletics, while the focus of a graduation speech is on academic achievements.
Writing a senior speech is a challenging but rewarding experience. By reflecting on your athletic journey, highlighting your accomplishments, expressing your gratitude, and sharing your wisdom, you’ll leave a lasting impression on the sports community. Remember to start with a strong opening, end with a powerful closing, and be specific in your expressions of gratitude. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to delivering a memorable senior speech.

Trump promotes Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless The USA Bible': What to know about the book and its long journey
- Former president Donald Trump encourages supporters to buy Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA Bible," a project inspired by Nashville country musician's hit song.
- Resurgent version of Greenwood's Bible project a modified version from original concept, a change that likely followed 2021 shake-up in publishers.
After years with few updates about Lee Greenwood’s controversial Bible, the project is again resurgent with a recent promotion by former President Donald Trump.
“All Americans need to have a Bible in their home and I have many. It’s my favorite book,” Trump said in a video posted to social media Tuesday, encouraging supporters to purchase the “God Bless The USA Bible.” “Religion is so important and so missing, but it’s going to come back.”
Greenwood — the Nashville area country musician whose hit song “God Bless the USA” inspired the Bible with a similar namesake — has long been allies with Trump and other prominent Republicans, many of whom are featured in promotional material for the “God Bless The USA Bible.” But that reputational clout in conservative circles hasn’t necessarily translated to business success in the past, largely due to a major change in the book’s publishing plan.
Here's what to know about the Bible project’s journey so far and why it’s significant it’s back in the conservative limelight.
An unordinary Bible, a fiery debate
The “God Bless The USA Bible” received heightened attention since the outset due to its overt political features.
The text includes the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance, and the lyrics to the chorus to Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA.” Critics saw it as a symbol of Christian nationalism, a right-wing movement that believes the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation.
A petition emerged in 2021 calling Greenwood’s Bible “a toxic mix that will exacerbate the challenges to American evangelicalism.” From there, a broader conversation ensued about the standards by which publishers print Bibles.
Gatekeeping in Bible publishing
Greenwood’s early business partner on the project, a Hermitage-based marketing firm called Elite Source Pro, initially reached a manufacturing agreement with the Nashville-based HarperCollins Christian Publishing to print the “God Bless The USA Bible.”
As part of that agreement, HarperCollins would publish the book but not sell or endorse it. But then HarperCollins reversed course , a major setback for Greenwood’s Bible.
The reversal by HarperCollins followed a decision by Zondervan — a publishing group under HarperCollins Christian Publishing and an official North American licensor for Bibles printed in the New International Version translation — to pass on the project. HarperCollins said the decision was unrelated to the petition or other public denunciations against Greenwood’s Bible.

A new translation and mystery publisher
The resurgent “God Bless The USA Bible” featured in Trump’s recent ad is an altered version of the original concept, a modification that likely followed the publishing shake-up.
Greenwood’s Bible is now printed in the King James Version, a different translation from the original pitch to HarperCollins.
Perhaps the biggest mystery is the new publisher. That manufacturer is producing a limited quantity of copies, leading to a delayed four-to-six weeks for a copy to ship.
It’s also unclear which business partners are still involved in the project. Hugh Kirkman, who led Elite Service Pro, the firm that originally partnered with Greenwood for the project, responded to a request for comment by referring media inquiries to Greenwood’s publicist.
The publicist said Elite Source Pro is not a partner on the project and the Bible has always been printed in the King James Version.
"Several years ago, the Bible was going to be printed with the NIV translation, but something happened with the then licensor and the then potential publisher. As a result, this God Bless The USA Bible has always been printed with the King James Version translation," publicist Jeremy Westby said in a statement.
Westby did not have the name of the new licensee who is manufacturing the Bible.
Trump’s plug for the “God Bless The USA Bible” recycled language the former president is using to appeal to a conservative Christian base.
“Our founding fathers did a tremendous thing when they built America on Judeo-Christian values,” Trump said in his video on social media. “Now that foundation is under attack perhaps as never before.”
