A4TC-2023 is the third edition of Archiol’s architecture thesis competition. “As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown.” – Norman Foster The architecture thesis is the ultimate yet preliminary test of a student; the initial years that contribute to shaping a designer who can blend all the wisdom accumulated over the academic years to create a composition of architectural ideas known as the architectural design thesis. Archiol launched this competition aiming to acknowledge the efforts and creativity of the future of architecture. A4TC is an international architecture thesis competition that aims to promote innovative ideas developed with extensive research and thought. Archiol is presenting the youth of architecture with an opportunity to showcase their creativity on a global scale. A4TC is considering the architectural thesis of the past five years (2018-2023). "Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light." - Le Corbusier Purpose: This competition aims to promote innovative ideas developed by the future of architecture.

Master of architecture (march) thesis, fall term 2023 theses deadlines (february 2024 degree candidates).

MArch students are required to register for 24 units of thesis (4.THG) the final term. The thesis proposal, including a thesis proposal form signed by all the thesis committee members, is due the first week of the term in which the student registers for thesis.

Friday, February 10, 2023: Registration Day (Penultimate Term)

• Petition must include approved pdf of dual degree coursework plan and indication of co-thesis advisor in secondary department (some dual degrees require additional paperwork)

Tuesday, September 4, 2023: Registration Date

• Deadline to Submit Thesis Committee Members: Email [email protected] with names and email addresses of Thesis Committee members
• You and your committee will then be sent a DocuSign version of the Thesis Proposal Form to fill in and collect esignatures
• Each DocuSign form must be generated separately and cannot be created until all email addresses are collected

• The "All clear" to start bringing your materials over will probably be after 2pm (may be as late as 5pm!).
• MIT ID card will allow you to swipe your way through the main doors to E14 at any hour and use any E14 elevator card reader. There is a freight elevator by the loading dock at the rear of the 1 st floor.
• A representative sample only of Long Lounge model bases will be brought over by truck. These will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in E14 6 th floor. If you have some special requirement or need for a particular shape or size base, then contact Lord Jim well in advance.
• If you have a large, heavy model that would be best transported by truck, please contact Lord Jim well in advance. It must be ready for pickup on (date TBD), at 8:00am in one of the thesis studios.
• Anything that we transport will be returned by truck on (date TBD).
• PLEASE NOTE: OUR TRANSPORTATION OF YOUR MODEL IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. WE WILL NOT BE REPSONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE OR LOSS.  We will make every effort to move your work carefully, but these are movers, not art conservators.

• Lord Jim will post the updated assignment plan to the studio door.  PLEASE DO NOT place any thesis materials elsewhere in the 5-414 studio.

A4TC-2023 is the third edition of Archiol’s architecture thesis competition. “As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown.” – Norman Foster The architecture thesis is the ultimate yet preliminary test of a student; the initial years that contribute to shaping a designer who can blend all the wisdom accumulated over the academic years to create a composition of architectural ideas known as the architectural design thesis. Archiol launched this competition aiming to acknowledge the efforts and creativity of the future of architecture. A4TC is an international architecture thesis competition that aims to promote innovative ideas developed with extensive research and thought. From Resistance to Resilience: Reinvigorating Wetland Ecology Along the Detroit River

These climatological shifts have made it necessary to foster a more ecologically sensitive and sustainable relationship with the Detroit River and to build resiliency along the edge through a framework of social-ecological resilience, where treating nature as a stakeholder and an ally is an inseparable part of thinking about cities, and where nature-based solutions, where the power and intelligence of nature are taken as a starting point for finding solutions. (Hajer et al. 2020) To test this claim, this thesis proposes to reimagine the design of a mixed-use riverfront development present along the edge of the Detroit River, through a framework of social-ecological resilience and urban form resilience, that will be achieved by the tools of landscape ecology and spatial morphology.

Passing Permanence: Reversible Building Practices in the U.S.

Architecture should not be destructive. An architecture that leaves minimal trace does not have to employ highly engineered componentry and new modular solutions that restrict design outcomes, but rather can modify existing techniques and tectonic understandings to remove wasteful practices that intentionally degrade or destroy material resources. Minimal trace architecture simultaneously upholds the health of its materiality through the redefinition of connection types while supporting its site and larger context through the removal of systemic inefficiencies and unnecessary permanently-intended change.

Pluggable Homes: Addressing America’s Housing Crisis Incrementally

Home Grown: Reimagining Dwelling Through Spatiaculture

Dwelling not only demands a balance between human-created and naturally occurring environments, but also the simultaneous improvement of both. To achieve dwelling many ancient cultivation practices like permaculture, horticulture, silviculture, and arboriculture are necessary. These practices have a central focus of maintaining and improving natural environments because the benefits they reap directly rely on the natural environment’s well-being. If architecture leverages the 17,000 years of ecological knowledge that these fields have generated, then true protection, freedom, support, peace and balance may begin to take root (Rasmussen, Wayne D., et al., 2022). Using trees and other living botanicals as a source of structure and enclosure, this thesis aims to trade inhabitation and its associated ailments for an architecture that is quite literally cultivated and alive. There is currently an imbalance of the built and natural environments caused by the commodification of land and architecture, which is best addressed with dwelling reinforced through spatiaculture. To investigate this proposition, an extrapolative study of Spatiaculture Dwellings will be applied to several environment and ecosystem types and then analyzed on their performance using the qualifiers that define dwelling.

Assembling Reinvestment: Emerging Construction Technologies and Their Effect on Cost-Effective Housing in Detroit

To investigate this claim, a series of digitally fabricated home designs will be posed, focusing on the present and near future of onsite autonomous construction machines, including a detailed cost breakdown to understand to what degree such methods can effectively contribute to cost-effective housing production. These houses will then be compared to current affordable building processes and standards, primarily through the lenses of cost and quality in order to determine the quantifiable degree by which such technological leverage improves the making of cost-effective housing.

Work-from-Home Vantage: Responsive Spaces for Disadvantaged Personality Characteristics

The beneficial success of model spaces is measured through investigative study designs advanced by qualified and quantified metrics according to the specific spatial and personality needs. This thesis seeks to examine personalities and explore ambient, spatial, and material characteristics of work-from-home space interventions that will best support the needs of those personality characteristics most disadvantaged by work-from-home environments.

An Architecture of Decay: Addressing Building Waste Through Biologically Integrated Architecture

To investigate this claim, this project will design a 2-story mixed-use structure, using fully biodegradable materials. This development type has a legacy in architectural practice and is a staple construction type of most major US cities. It also acts as an advantageous operating system relative to this thesis due to its cyclical resiliency to programmatic cycles and its need for continual replacement and maintenance of materials. This investigation is intended to relink human spaces with natural ones fostering the perpetual growth and balance of both systems with each other.

Unintended Permanence: Mass Customized Housing for Protracted Statelessness

This thesis proposes to design a building process that merges ancient vernacular building knowledge with contemporary technology. Digital fabrication will enable rapid mass customization of designs at a scale necessary for a refugee camp size. Contemporary construction methods can be used to build key components of shelters providing a level of precision and accuracy while other components can be assembled by refugees allowing them to remain engaged in the process.

Building an Architecture of Non-Displacement: Preserving Community through a Revitalized Construction Process

In order to investigate this strategy, this thesis will focus on the redevelopment of Clement Kern Gardens, an existing affordable housing project located in Detroit, Michigan. Clement Kern Gardens is part of a larger-scale vision encompassed by the Greater Corktown Framework Plan, funded by the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative grant. The proposed design investigation will be compared to the current redevelopment plan of Clement Kern Gardens and the precedent study of Grove Parc Plaza in Chicago to evaluate whether or not a reformed construction process might help to eliminate displacement. If successful, this thesis will offer a way in which architects might add value relative to the disenfranchised within the construction process, in a similar fashion to how architects and clients add value to cities.

Made with Matriarchs: Crafting Heritage-Oriented Futures with the Karamojong

In response, this thesis proposes an iterative, heritage-based approach to design and construction, crafted to mitigate the increasingly harmful effects of globalization upon the traditionally semi-nomadic societies of northern Uganda. In this approach, alternative futures are imagined by reconsidering the role of the architect in relation to the pre-colonial keepers of the built environment; the Matriarchs. When working within this alternative arrangement, architects would work responsively with Matriarchs, lengthening the process of interaction in favor of a responsive design methodology that strengthens the Matriarchs power of architectural self-determination. Strategies to equip pastoralist architecture with greater autonomy are imagined, proposed and filtered through a Matriarch-led process to determine what is appropriated, effective and ultimately in the best interest of their desired way of life.

• Do we have to select one particular disaster and area of application or we are looking at a module that can fit in any affected area? We are looking for a module that can actually fit in any kind of disaster affected area as per the requirements given in the competition brief.
• Is the design project should be cosidered more like a temporary structure or permanent building? The project should be considered as a temporary structure, as it will be a module and can be transported to other disaster sites if required.
• What about the services and toilets in a temporary shelter? Being a temporary shelter that must be quickly built and functioning, chemical baths or recycling technology can be used.
• Should we need to design seperate "assistance area"(medical and psychological care areas)?" As you know that an emergency can affect a very large number of victims, so it would not be possible to have everyone housed in the assistance area. the victims will stay for short periods according to the needs of the single case and emergency.
• Is there any height limit for the project? There is no height limit as such. Only ground floor is required to avoid structural complications.
• How many team members are allowed to form a team? A team can consists of total three[3] members including the team leader. If you want to register individually, you are most welcome.
• What is the nature of the competition and is it open for all? All Competitions organized by mango architecture are open ideas design competitions with no intentions to execute the proposals submitted in any form. The competitions are open to students, teachers, designers, professionals, and the inspired design community.
• Are multiple entries allowed for submission? or can we submit multiple projects in one entry? Participants are free to submit multiple entries or projects, but each entry must be registered by a separate email ID.
• How does a team receive their unique registration code? All the participants will only receive the unique registration code after completing the registration process. The code will be mailed to your registered email address within 24 hours. If you didn't find the mail, we request you to please check your spam folder of the mailbox before mailing us for the same.
• Is hand-drawn sheets allowed in the competition? Yes, they are allowed, participants can scan and mail them to us at [email protected] Just follow all the submissions guidelines carefully.
• Is the competition judged anonymously? All entries are reviewed anonymously by the competition jury. Upon registration each team receives a unique registration code, this code is the only mean by which submissions are identified.
• Can we change/swap team members after the registrations? Teams are welcome to add, remove, or swap team members as long as their total members do not exceed three.
• What should the participants do in case the payment modes are not available in our country? We request our participants to send us an e-mail at [email protected] to get an alternate payment method link. We would send you all the possible payment methods for you to participate. We are already accepting payments from all the countries.
• Can I have a refund of the registration fee? No. As already mentioned in the terms and conditions, reimbursement is not possible under any circumstances.
• Are we allowed to submit the proposal anytime we want or is there any specific date and time or dealine for the submission? All the competitions organized by mango architecture have there specific submission deadline, date and time. But, once you registered and ready with your submission you can submit it on [email protected] anytime you want. Our submission portal is open 24x7. You will receive a confirmation mail within 24 hours after your mail. If in case you didn't recieve any confirmation from us, please write back to us on [email protected]

Fifth-Year Students View Thesis Books

The thesis book serves as a significant artifact of an architect’s education. Last week, our fifth-year students gathered to discuss their ongoing thesis documentation endeavors. They pinned-up progress from their own pages and found inspiration in a collection of thesis books made by former students. Professors Chris Pritchett and Bill Galloway spoke about essential design decisions including typeface, material, binding, scale, storytelling, and graphic layout. The students reminded one another of foundational design considerations including hierarchy, proportion, rhythm, and color. We look forward to watching these ideas come to life!”

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?

As one might expect from a project of this sheer ambition, Moskva-City has a troubled past. The economic crash in 2008 hit Russia hard enough to evict the previous Mayor of Moscow , Yuri Luzhkov, who had been a cheerleader for the district, and replace him with the considerably more austere Sergei Sobyanin, who famously declared that the whole idea was an “urban planning mistake.” But as recently as 2013, the Wall Street Journal was triumphantly claiming that Moskva-City had risen from the dead, citing 80% occupancy rates and glowing quotes from industry insiders claiming that Moskva-City was the "place to be." Driven by record highs in oil prices, Moscow looked poised to become the next Dubai .

Instead, Moscow is now in the grip of an economic winter prompted by western sanctions and drops in the price of oil. The large financial groupings that Moskva-City was meant to shelter have been warned off by their inability to issue credit to international markets, for example - but Moskva-City isn’t just an Empire State Building left empty by the Great Depression.

A fundamental problem that is holding Moskva back compared to the rest of Moscow is the simple fact that currently, getting to Moskva-City is nigh-on impossible at peak hours. Moscow has long been plagued with transport problems, ever since the government failed to match the dramatic expansion of the city with a dramatic expansion of the transport system after the Second World War. Despite being only 2.5 miles from the Kremlin , Moskva-City is only just inside the ring road that bounds the city center and which acts as the only real transport link to it (and as a result, is clogged by construction vehicles.) A railway and metro hub has been finished, but so far only runs a one-stop shuttle service to the closest Metro station that is actually integrated with the rest of Moscow Metro. The isolation of the outer districts is a large, negative part of the Moscow psyche, and it’s not surprising that this is driving away the globetrotting financial elite this project was meant to attract.

The project is managed by architectural practice No.6, which is a constituent part of the large Moscow based practice Mosproject-2 , which is itself a public corporation headed up by Mikhail Vasilyevich Posokhin, who is apparently the “People’s Architect of Russia.” Despite all this state involvement, the project has still managed to become bogged down in bureaucratic infighting - each lot is managed and developed individually, which has led to developers competing for occupants by slashing rates.

Much has been written about the way modern financial districts and towers that inhabit them can be unwelcoming, forbidding or even hostile by design, but the skyscrapers of Moskva-City seem even less friendly than usual. The site - a former stone quarry, chosen out of necessity as the only place in the city center where a new district could be plausibly constructed - is isolated both physically and visually, leaving the cluster a stark anomaly on the city skyline. Even the names seem more imposing than optimistic now: Imperia, City of Capitals , Steel Peak.

The Mercury City Tower , so far the tallest completed building on the site, is officially “a strong reference to Russian constructivism, [which] gives the tower a strong vertical thrust similar to the one found in New York's Chrysler building .” It would be easy to criticize the Mercury City Tower for picking ‘inspirations’ that are so totally opposed to each other - The Chrysler building the defining emblem of American pre-crash confidence and Constructivism created with the express purpose (especially architecturally) of extending the Bolshevik revolution into a social revolution - but the way they smash those two inspirations together is almost beautifully ironic.

Even though the High Level Hostel is less an asset to a financial district than it is a PR problem, it’s been a huge success since opening in September, already ranked 27th out of 766 hostels in Moscow by TripAdvisor. According to the management agency for Moskva-City , 58% of the new occupant signings this year have been non-financial, including a number of small to medium size businesses. Other areas of office space have been occupied by a restaurant and a culinary school, while another space has been redeveloped into a 6,000 seat theater.

While Moskva-City is failing to be a financial district that could take on the world, it’s inadvertently becoming a humanized space catering to the very groups that the Russian economic miracle left behind. Taking advantage of rents lower than the rest of Moscow , the world class facilities and the sheer desperation of the developers, the humanization of Moskva-City could well create the world’s first high-rise bohemia.

Of course, these are not spaces designed for a community, or even for people: these are spaces designed for money, and there’s little scope for changing something that seems so baked into the design of Moskva-City . The High Level Hostel is trading off of the irony of being a hostel in a banking tower, but it’s perfectly possible that at some point people will no longer find this joke funny (especially in a building that seems hostile to the very idea of humor). The isolation of Moskva, even though it allowed this community to spring up in the first place, is just as detrimental to a humanized district as it is to a financial one: even bohemians need to move around the city, or the district risks becoming a black-spot instead of a hot-spot.

Moskva-City’s isolation won’t last forever. The end of construction will open the roads up to traffic, and plans to properly integrate the spur lines of the Metro in this area into the wider system are well under way. The integration of the district will inevitably push up rents, and the Russian economy will eventually boom once again. When that happens, Moskva-City is prime territory to be reconquered by the giants of international finance, and it seems unlikely that the municipal or national governments would want to step in to protect this accidental district. For now, though, the towers capture perfectly this moment of Russia ’s schizophrenic understanding of its place in the world.
