With the traditional classes, students are rarely provided with the course materials by their instructors, and they are therefore expected to take their own notes. This is important because they are likely to preserve such note and use them later on in their studies. In contrast, online students are provided with course materials in the form of video or audio texts (Sorenson and Johnson 116).

They can also download such course materials online. Such learning materials can be deleted or lost easily compared with handwritten class notes, and this is a risk. Although the basic requirements for a student attending online classes are comparatively les in comparison to students attending traditional classes, nonetheless, it is important to note that online students are also expected to be internet savvy because all learning takes place online.

This would be a disadvantage for the regular student; only that internet savvy is not a requirement. The only form of interaction is online. As such, it becomes hard for them to develop a special bond with other students and instructors. With traditional learning however, students have the freedom to interact freely and this helps to strengthen their existing bond.

Online learning is convenient and has less basic requirements compared with traditional learning. It also allows learners who would have ordinarily not gone back to school to access an education. However, online students do not benefit from a close interaction with their peers and instructors as do their regular counterparts. Also, regular students can engage their instructors more easily and relatively faster in case they want to have certain sections of the course explained, unlike online students.

Conventional learning is evolving with the help of computers and online technology. New ways of learning are now available, and improved access is one of the most important benefits available. Online learning is giving people new choices and newfound flexibility with their personal learning and development. Whereas before, formal academic qualifications could only be gained by participating in a full time course on site, the internet has allowed institutions to expand their reach and offer recognized courses on a contact-partial, or totally virtual, basis. Institutions can do so with relatively few extra resources, and for paid courses this constitutes excellent value, and the student benefits with greater educational access and greater flexibility to learn and get qualified even when there lots of other personal commitments to deal with.

Flexibility is certainly one of the most important benefits, but just as important is educational access. On top of the internet’s widespread presence in developed countries, the internet is becoming increasingly available in newly developed and developing countries. Even without considering the general informational exposure that the internet delivers, online academic courses and learning initiatives are becoming more aware of the needs of people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and this means that people from such backgrounds are in a much better position to learn and progress than they used to be.

The biggest argument that raises doubt over online learning is the quality of online courses in comparison to conventional courses. Are such online courses good enough for employers to take notice? The second biggest argument is the current reality that faces many people from disadvantaged backgrounds, despite the improvements made in this area in recent years – they do not have the level of basic access needed to benefit from online learning. In fact, there are numerous sources of evidence that claim disadvantaged students are not receiving anywhere near the sort of benefits that online learning institutions and promoters are trying to instigate. Currently there are many organisations, campaigns and initiatives that are working to expand access to higher education. With such high participation, it can be argued that it is only a matter of time before the benefits are truly realised, but what about the global online infrastructure?

There is another argument that is very difficult to dispel, and that is the response of different types of students to the online learning paradigm. Evidence shows that there are certain groups of students that benefit from college distance learning much more than other groups. In essence, students must be highly motivated and highly disciplined if they are to learn effectively in their own private environment.

The spread of computer technology has stimulated the emergence of innovative educational systems and active development of distance forms of education. Today, many people who want to pursue a higher education face to a hard choice: either to be trained in a traditional high school / university, or to receive education virtually, communicating with a bearer of knowledge and information using the own computer.

The decision of a particular student may be affected by various factors, and the main purpose of this paper is to examine these factors in the frames of both online and traditional education. The main thesis is the following: supporters of online education states that at present, high-quality and affordable higher education is not necessarily includes a daily attending of seminars and lectures for 5 years, while supporters of traditional education, in their turn, states that many students need permanent control from teacher’s side which is impossible during online education.

At the beginning, it is important to mention that distance education is a progressive type of education that allows to connect together a geographically remote teacher, learning materials and a student in the learning process (Smith, Ferguson and Caris, 2001). Of course, there is no a doubt that distance education does not solve all the problems of education, but in some cases it allows to solve a number of important issues in higher education through the use of new information technologies (Meyer, 2002). In such a way, it is necessary to consider the objective reasons that allow to speak in favor of choosing distance learning in comparison to traditional methods of education.

The first point is the cost of education. Comparing the cost of online and traditional education, we see that the cost of online education is more affordable for students because online schools or universities have no necessity to rent classrooms or spend the payment on some housing needs (Kirtman, 2009). So, total expenditure on education can deduct travel expenses to the training center / university and expenses on the rent of apartment for the period of study. In addition, a student may independently select the time to study all the materials, which allows a person to use the own time in a more flexible way, and to save much more time for other important things.

The second point is the ability to select the own speed of learning. Course materials, tests and exams are available to students at any time during online education, while traditional education provides specific time frames for everything beginning with the access to educational materials and ending with the time of exams (Lynch, 2004). Being a distant student, a person can independently choose the time and amount of material studied. This is especially beneficial for people who already have a basic level of education and decided to expand their knowledge.

And finally, the third point is the access to prestigious universities, their educational programs and courses. Students who study in a traditional way (or employees of a company) may be interested in a parallel study of certain courses, disciplines, programs in another school / university. The technology of distance education allows people to achieve this goal and simultaneously examine multiple disciplines at different educational institutions, while traditional education limits the possibilities to be in several places at the same time.

In conclusion, it should be noted that it is important not to lose the two main characteristics that make online education so attractive to many students. These characteristics are flexibility and cost advantages, which allow people, who have been deprived of this opportunity in the past, to get higher education in their chosen area at present. Thus, quality, flexibility and cost, of course, remain key reasons for future university / college entrants in the choice of higher education programs.

Online courses allow students to take classes while living in different states or in different countries. Some schools offer traditional courses, online distance courses, or hybrid courses; the latter includes taking both traditional and online classes. Even schools with the most traditional educational strategies, often called “brick and mortar” schools, gradually start offering online courses in response to the skyrocketing number of students partaking in the online experience. As online education becomes increasingly popular among young people, pushing traditional educational models aside, it is necessary to compare and contrast these two approaches and find out which one offers more positive outcomes for students and their academic performance. The aim of this essay is to find out whether online learning is better, worse, or equal to traditional in-class learning while analyzing its advantages and drawbacks.

The difference between traditional and online education is especially noticeable in three dimensions: access to learning, classroom space, and the possibility of implementing innovative teaching practices. Online education, also known as distance learning, is a form of online learning that encourages students to be learned without physically attending courses. Distance learning is convenient for students who have a busy life and don't have time to attend school, or who live a long distance away from the learning institution. Distance schooling is also advantageous for students who work full-time and have significant family commitments. Traditional schooling, on the other hand, is a style of education that takes place in formal classrooms and allows students to physically attend class lessons. Traditional education is the most common form of learning, but the advent of technology and the internet have made distance learning more popular in recent years. The current popularity of online education can also be attributed to the flexibility and convenience it offers (Li & Irby, 2008). This paper is going to argue for traditional learning by outlining its benefits over distance learning.

Benefits of Traditional Learning

Traditional learning programs provide more quality education than distance learning. Traditional programs utilize established, tried and tested techniques of equipping students with the required knowledge and skills. Through traditional education, learners meet in classrooms, libraries, and laboratories. As such, students interact with each other and their instructors. Even though technology has enhanced the availability of distance education, there is still value in the traditional format of learning. Meeting in classrooms, coffee and lunch breaks, and other forums provide the opportunity to share and learn more. Aside from just learning, classes and other school events provide a chance of networking and socializing (Rovai & Jordan, 2004).

Benefits for Younger Students

The traditional format of education is more beneficial to the younger generation of learners who apparently require more guidance from the teaching personnel. It is also more convenient for students with no access to computers. For older students who appear to be less tech-savvy than the younger learners, a traditional form of education is a good fit for them. There are other experiences in schools and campuses like sporting events and concerts that make traditional education more enjoyable.

Traditional education provides a better learning environment for programs or courses that require hands-on training like engineering, medicine, and nursing. Though critics have raised different concerns about the traditional format of education like cost and convenience, it is still by far the most reliable form of education in the market. It is an efficiently structured type of education with a well-developed curriculum, ensuring that students get equipped with the necessary skills for employment.
