The awards are given to the most outstanding researchers of the conference under below four categories.

The Overall Best Presentation Award

This award will be provided for the most outstanding presentation of the entire conference.

The Best Student Presentation Award

The Best Student Presentation Award will be given to the most outstanding presentation presented by a participant who has registered under the student category. Undergraduates, Master students, and Ph.D. students will be considered under this category.

Session’s Best Presentation Awards

There will be a number of technical sessions in the conference under different themes. These awards are provided to the presentations that have been selected to be the best in the particular session.

  The Best Poster Presentation Award

There will be a poster session at the conference and this award is dedicated to the poster presenters in the conference. The best poster presentation will be selected among all the researchers in the session.

 Selection Process

Criteria For The Session’s Best Presentation Award

Each and every presentation is evaluated by two evaluators and the average mark of both evaluators is taken as the final mark. The best presentation from each session will be selected based on the final mark received from the evaluators and the final decision is given by the Conference Chair. Below criteria are taken into consideration for this award and marks are given out of 100.

  • Value of the Content – 40%
  • Clarity of Presentation – 20%
  • Appropriate Audio Visual Aids- 20%
  • Ability to Connect with the Audience 10%
  • Proper Timing – 20%

Criteria for The Best Poster Presentation Award

Every poster presentation is evaluated by a special evaluator based on below criteria and the presentation with the highest mark is selected as the Best Poster Presentation Award. The final mark is given out of 100.

  • Depth of Content (40%)
  • Introduction and Abstract (15%)
  • Content knowledge and organization (20%)
  • Poster Design and Overall Visual Appeal (10%)
  • Verbal Interaction (15%)

Criteria for The Overall Best Presentation Award And Best Student Presentation Award

Presentations of each technical session with the highest marks shall be recommended for these two awards.  They are evaluated by a special committee headed by the conference chair according to the below criteria.

  • The ability of practical implementation(Will change according to the conference)

PBRN Best Presentation Award

The Network for Practice Based Research's Best Oral Presentation Awards are given to the oral or poster presentation judged to be the best ‘practice based research study’ presented during the IADR General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Two awards are offered (First and Runner up). Includes a certificate. Both are non-cash awards The Network for Practice Based Research's Best Poster Presentation Award is given to a poster presentation judged to be the best ‘practice based research study’ presented during the IADR General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). One award is offered to the best Poster presentation. Includes a certificate. Non cash award.

Eligibility

  • Research should be clinical or clinically related and carried out in a dental practice setting outside a dental school or other academic dental institution.
  • PBRN officers and executive committee members are not eligible.
  • Open to all members, non-members, students and non-students.

The purpose of the award is to encourage and disseminate practice based research. A cash award of $500 USD will be presented to the successful candidate whose abstract, oral or poster is presented at a session during the IADR General Session. Presentations are judged by a panel of PBRN officers or PBRN members appointed by the PBRN Board and; an award is made only if it is determined a presentation demonstrates sufficient merit and high clinical relevance.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be a presenter of a poster or oral presentation and have their abstract accepted.
  • The study should be clinical or clinically related and carried out in a dental practice setting outside a dental school or other academic dental institution.
  • The study should be of high quality design and presentation.
  • Results should have a high degree of clinical relevance and relate to general dental practice.
  • Candidates interested in participating in the competition must click the check box on the IADR abstract submission site.
  • NPBR officers and executive committee members are not eligible.
  • Candidates are responsible for presenting the research in compliance with the IADR call for abstracts.
  • This award is open to all applicants that met the above criteria (members, non-members, students and non-students).

Criteria for Judging

Two PBRN members (PBRN appointed members) will make a selection from submitted abstracts resulting in maximum three nominations for the best poster and three for the best oral presentation. Candidates will be evaluated during their official abstract presentation scheduled by IADR GHQ. Those presentations will be inspected by the two network members (NPBR officers or appointed members) at the IADR General Session. The criteria for judging the presentations are as listed below. Each category is ranked on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest.

  • Research design: Does it fit the aims/research questions and was it conducted appropriately?
  • Analysis: Are the techniques appropriate and used correctly?
  • Conclusions: Are they justified/supported by the results?
  • Clinical Relevance for the practitioner: How do the findings affect dental oral health care? Can the findings be applied into general practice settings?
  • Presentation: Did the presenter communicate clearly? Did the slides/poster clearly communicate the findings? Did the presenter clearly answer the questions?

Presentation Awards of MEDCOM 2024

Presentation awards are given with the intention of recognizing one’s contribution to the field and encouraging more active participation for the betterment of the research fraternity as a whole. The concept will inspire you to achieve more and may lead to policy implementation in the pursuit of a fruitful tomorrow.

The final decisions will be taken by the evaluation panel members of the session and the Conference Chair. Evaluation panel will be consist with personals with sound academic or industrial background for that particular subject area. The marks will be given by the Evaluation panel according to the following criteria. The highest scoring presentations will be recommended for the following awards based on the evaluation committee’s and the Conference Chair’s rankings.

Presentation Awards Categories

The AABA has long recognized the important contributions made to our discipline by students. Their work reflects the promise and future of our field. Conferring awards for outstanding presentations delivered at the annual meeting celebrates innovative and rigorous research by young scholars. We urge all students eligible for an award to submit an application.

AABA Student Awards:

  • American Association of Biological Anthropologists Awards for Outstanding Student Presentations
  • American Association of Biological Anthropologists Honorable Mention for Student Presentations
  • Mildred Trotter Prize for outstanding presentation on bones or teeth
  • Patricia Whitten Prize for outstanding presentation on primatology
  • Journal of Human Evolution Prize on human or primate evolution
  • The AAA-AABA Anatomy in Anthropology Prize for outstanding poster and podium presentations best implementing traditional or state-of-the-art anatomical methodologies in innovative anthropological research (subject to co-funding by the Association of Anatomists).

Eligibility:  To be eligible for a prize, a paper or poster must meet the following criteria:

[Please note that only abstracts submitted for the October 15 deadline are eligible. Abstracts submitted for other types of symposia (e.g. workshop or the undergraduate student research symposium) do not fall under the purview of this competition.]

  • The first author must be a student member (or special member who is a student) of the AABA at the time of abstract submission who has not previously won a prize for an AABA presentation. 
  • Individuals who have completed all terminal degree requirements before the abstract submission deadline are ineligible for a student prize. However, the first author may be a Regular Member at the time of presentation.
  • The first author must be a member of the AABA at the time the meeting is held (Student or Special).
  • The paper and the project to be presented must be primarily the work of the first author.
  • The abstract must have been  accepted  for either a podium or poster presentation of the main AABA meeting (exclusive of the COD Undergraduate Research Symposium).
  • The first author student must personally make the presentation of the paper or poster.
  • A summary of the presentation must be submitted to the competition by TBD.

You will need the following information to submit your application: 

  • Full names of authors and institution addresses; 
  • If the paper is multi-authored, state the contributions of each of the authors in terms of intellectual and/or methodological investment; 
  • If two student co-authors contributed equally to the paper, and wish to be considered as co-principal investigators (co-PI’s) of the paper, indicate that this is the case. Should they win an award, they will each receive a check for half the amount of the total award. 
  • The date, time, and session number of your presentation.
  • A brief summary of the presentation (up to 1000 words, excluding references) organized under the following headings a) Research questions or hypotheses; b) Background to questions; c) Methods used to answer the questions; d) Results; e) Discussion; f) Conclusions; g) Bibliography

Deadline to enter the 2024 competition is March 1, 2024.

Student Presentation Award Applications have closed

Review and Decisions:  The Student Program Committee judges the written summaries and the visual/oral presentations given at the AABA meetings for quality of ideas and clarity of presentation. Prizes are awarded at the Closing and Awards Reception on the last evening of the Annual Meetings. The value of the each award is $500.  Everyone who enters the competition will receive a short review of their presentation from one of the judges.

Past Awards and Awardees:

For decades, student awards for outstanding podium and poster presentations were conferred based on the type of presentation delivered by the student and in honor of past leaders of the AABA. In 2019, the Executive Committee of the AABA, based on discussion over several years and with input from standing committees and our membership, voted to change the names of student prizes to better reflect the core values and ethical responsibilities of our discipline, and to celebrate the increasing number of student contributions to the scientific content of our meetings.

We do not by this decision attempt to erase historical scholarship, the use of which we anticipate will continue with a critical eye, as we seek to build an inclusive and equitable science. Nor do we intend to erase or neglect to recognize the role individuals, and our association, played in the active production of racist science. Rather, we wish to celebrate student achievement that implicitly and explicitly reflects core values of the current and future AABA.

Hence, the AABA Executive Committee will bestow all AABA-supported awards as American Association of Biological Anthropologists Awards for Outstanding Student Presentation and the American Association of Biological Anthropologists Honorable Mentions for Student Presentation. Endowed awards, awards supported by journals and publishers, along with awards co-sponsored with other organizations, will remain unchanged in name. As always, all awards will be announced and celebrated during the closing reception of the AABA Annual Meeting.

Presentation Awards of the ICEDU 2024

Presentation awards are given with the intention of recognizing one’s contribution to the field and encouraging more active participation for the betterment of the research fraternity as a whole. The concept will inspire you to achieve more and may lead to policy implementation in the pursuit of a fruitful tomorrow. The final decisions will be taken by the evaluation panel members of the session and the Conference Chair. Evaluation panel will be consist with personals with sound academic or industrial background for that particular subject area. The marks will be given by the Evaluation panel according to the following criteria. The highest scoring presentations will be recommended for the following awards based on the evaluation committee’s and the Conference Chair’s rankings.

The awards are given to the most outstanding researchers of the conference under four categories (This can be changed).

The Overall Best Presentation Award

The best student presentation award, session’s best presentation awards, the best poster presentation award.

There will be a poster session at the conference and this award is dedicated to the poster presenters in the conference. The best poster presentation will be selected among all the researchers in the session.

Selection Process

Criteria for the best oral presentation awards.

Each and every presentation is evaluated by two evaluators and the average mark of both evaluators is taken as the final mark. The best presentation from each session will be selected based on the final mark received from the evaluators and the final decision is given by the Conference Chair. Below criteria are taken into consideration for this award and marks are given out of 100.

  • Content of the presentation (45%)
  • Clarity and flow of the Presentation (20%)
  • Novelty /contribution to the field (25%)

Criteria for the Best Poster Presentation Award

Every poster presentation is evaluated by a special evaluator based on below criteria and the presentation with the highest mark is selected as the Best Poster Presentation Award. The final mark is given out of 100.

  • Depth of Content (40%)
  • Introduction and Abstract (15%)
  • Content knowledge and organization (20%)
  • Poster Design and Overall Visual Appeal (10%)
  • Verbal Interaction (15%)

Criteria for the Overall Best Presentation Award and Best Student Presentation Award

Presentations of each technical session with the highest marks shall be recommended for these two awards.  They are evaluated by a special committee headed by the Conference Chair according to the below criteria.

  • Significance of the paper to the field
  • Theoretical contribution
  • The ability of practical implementation
  • Use of appropriate methodological rigor
  • Originality

Awards Ceremony

All the winners will be presented with their awards during the awarding ceremony which will be held on the last day of the conference along with the conference conclusion.

Best Poster Award

The SHM Best Poster Paper Award is presented to one or more individuals whose poster paper(s) are selected to have the highest quality and innovation from the Proceedings of the 2021 IWSHM. The Award, evaluation criteria, Award Committee composition, nomination, and selection procedures are described below.

I. Eligibility All the poster papers submitted, accepted, and presented-in-poster for the 13 th  IWSHM are eligible for this award.

II. Nomination criteria All the authors are considered candidates for this Award. Originality and technical excellence are the two main criteria for selection.

III. Award Committee The Award Committee is formed by all the Session Chairman for this Workshop. They may propose among the articles from the sessions of their specialty, one or two poster papers which may be candidates for the Award, justifying their proposal. The Award Committee Chairman is Prof. Yi-Qing Ni, from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. His primary responsibility is to make sure the committee functions and, based on the votes from the Award Committee members, to rank the candidates.

IV. Selection procedure Originality and technical excellence are considered as the main criteria for nomination. Session chairmen will rank the poster papers; later a subcommittee will review these proposals and will prepare a definitive selection.

V. Award presentation During the Workshop, a plaque accompanied by a check will be presented by the Chairman of the Award Committee. The Chairman of the Award Committee and the Chairman of the Workshop are in charge of the Award presentation ceremony.

  • Tips for Addressing the Impact of Inflation on the Budget - May 5, 2023 As inflation hits levels not seen in forty years, the impact on governmental budgets can be quite harmful. Inflation can affect all areas of the budget. In order to make proper decisions on how to deal with this impact, it is important to understand the different inflation indices, how they are measured, and which ones are the most relevant for your organization. GFOA’s best practice on Inflationary Indices in Budgeting provides a good overview of the different inflationary indices. We will have two guest speakers on how inflation has impacted their county and city's budget respectively, and the techniques that they use to identify and mitigate those challenges.

Oscars 2025: New rules announced; to impact Best Picture criteria

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a series of changes to the rules and promotional campaign regulations for the upcoming 97th Oscars , set to take place on March 2, 2025. The updates include new qualifying criteria for films, modifications to the best original score category, and revisions to special awards. These changes aim to support traditional cinemas by excluding COVID-19 -era rules about drive-in theaters from its list of qualifying venues for Oscar eligibility.

Films must adhere to enhanced theatrical standards

In order to be considered for the Oscars, films must now be shown for a week in a theater in LA County, New York City , the Bay Area, Chicago , Atlanta , or Dallas -Fort Worth. Additionally, films must adhere to enhanced theatrical standards and meet at least two out of four criteria from the Academy's Representation and Inclusion Standards to contend for the Best Picture Oscar. Meanwhile, non-US territory releases will be counted toward two of the 10 markets required for qualification.

Significant changes to the Best Original Score category

The Academy has also made significant changes to the Best Original Score category. The shortlist for this category will now include 20 titles, up from the previous 15. Further, up to three composers can be individually recognized with Oscar statuettes if they have all made substantial contributions to a film's music. This is a departure from the previous rule that required composers to apply as a collective.

New requirements for Best Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay

The Academy has introduced new requirements for the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay categories, with writers now obligated to provide a final shooting script. Additionally, animated features submitted by an overseas country for the Best International Feature Film trophy can also be considered for the Best Animated Feature Film category if they meet the eligibility requirements outlined for both categories. The Academy's Governors Awards ceremony will see changes in its special honors. The Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award will transition from being presented as a bust of Thalberg to an Oscar statuette. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award has been redefined as an award "given to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities."

Academy rebranded two Scientific Awards, too

Meanwhile, the prestigious Academy has also announced the rebranding of two special honors given at the Scientific and Technical Awards. The Gordon E Sawyer Award will now be known as the "Scientific and Technical Lifetime Achievement Award," while the John A Bonner Award will transition to the "Scientific and Technical Service Award." Nominations are scheduled to be announced on January 17, following the release of the shortlists a month earlier.
