Security and trust are extremely important issues in e-commerce. One of the major perceived threats of e-commerce is the issue of security. Security and trust threats come from two areas in e-commerce – threat from third party attacks on legitimate transactions between a retailer and the customer and threat from fraudulent retailers to customers. It has become important for organisations and their online presence to identify the risks and threats to security in order to promote a safer security environment. Website usability is important for online retailers because their ‘shops’ are not physically manned and consumers abandon sites that are poorly designed, if they need to make too many clicks, or if they have to look too hard for what they want. Customers don’t return if the content is hard to use. Websites therefore have to be very user-friendly; the layout and design should strive to achieve the balance between simplicity and presentation of all information because higher usability is a competitive advantage in today’s market. Technology has also been employed to provide effective customer service, such as having 24/7 support over the phone, and live chat on the e-commerce website. The new generation of Internet applications, such as the semantic web and natural language search (collectively termed Web 3.0), holds great promise for progress in customer service in e-commerce. An increasingly networked and mobile world means that the Internet is no longer shackled to the desktop and a landline. It is now available in many mobile devices including smartphones and tablets. Savvy retailers have been quick on the uptake, providing content and delivery mechanisms more suited to the m-commerce platform. In brief, it is arguable that the laws in this area are generally proved to have been made at the behest of lobby groups that sit behind large profit-making organisations so that customers are then generally left to suffer. Some of the examples to have arisen in this regard include:

Data mining is another area which is likely to have a significant impact upon e-commerce. This is because it has come to be recognised that, since a huge amount of information is made available through digital systems, and that this information can be collated from various sources so as to then glean significantly more information than the individual would expect, customer privacy issues have come to the fore in recent years. With this in mind, legislation, including the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000, has been aimed at protecting the interests of the lay citizen. E-Commerce – Introduction

E-commerce means using the Internet and the web for business transactions and/or commercial transactions, which typically involve the exchange of value (e.g., money) across organizational or individual boundaries in return for products and services. Here we focus on digitally enabled commercial transactions among organizations and individuals.

E-business applications turn into e-commerce precisely, when an exchange of value occurs. Digitally enabled transactions include all transactions mediated by digital technology and platform; that is, transactions that occur over the Internet and the web.

Hence, e-tailing is a subset of e-commerce, which encapsulates all “commerce” conducted via the Internet. It refers to that part of e-commerce that entails the sale of product merchandise and does not include sale of services, namely railway tickets, airlines tickets and job portals.

There are three types of destinations that cater to retail sales:

i. Traditional retail- brick-and-mortar

ii. Corporatized retail- brick-and-mortar

iii. Corporatized retail- e-tailing

E-Commerce – History of E-Commerce

Early Development:

The history of E-commerce begins with the invention of the telephone at the end of last century. EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is widely viewed as the beginning of ecommerce if we consider ecommerce as the networking of business communities and digitalization of business information. Large organizations have been investing in development of EDI since sixties. It has not gained reasonable acceptance until eighties. The meaning of electronic commerce has changed over the last 30 years.

Originally, electronic commerce meant the facilitation of commercial transactions electronically, using technology such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). These were both introduced in the late 1970s, allowing businesses to send commercial documents like purchase orders or invoices electronically. The growth and acceptance of credit cards, automated teller machines (ATM) and telephone banking in the 1980s were also forms of electronic commerce. Another form of E-commerce was the airline and railway reservation system.

Online shopping, an important component of electronic commerce was invented by Michael Aldrich in the UK in 1979. The world’s first recorded business to business was Thomson Holidays in 1981. The first recorded Business to consumer was Gateshead SIS/Tesco in 1984. During the 1980s, online shopping was also used extensively in the UK by auto manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors and Nissan. The systems used the switched public telephone network in dial-up and leased line modes.

From the 1990s onwards, electronic commerce would additionally include enterprise resource planning systems (ERP), data mining and data warehousing. An early online information marketplace, including online consulting, was the American Information Exchange, another pre Internet online system introduced-in 1991. In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and transformed an academic telecommunication network into a worldwide everyman everyday communication system called internet/www(dot)Commercial enterprise on the Internet was strictly prohibited until 1991.

Although the Internet became popular worldwide around 1994 when the first internet online shopping started, it took about five years to introduce security protocols and DSL allowing continual connection to the Internet. By the end of 2000, many European and American business companies offered their services through the World Wide Web. Since then people began to associate a word “E-commerce” with the ability of purchasing various goods through the Internet using secure protocols and electronic payment services.

Then, the e-commerce store passes the order to the dropship supplier. This supplier manages inventory, oversees the warehouse of goods, packages the goods, and delivers the product to the purchaser.

White Labeling

White-label e-commerce companies leverage already successful products sold by another company. After a customer places an order, the e-commerce company receives the existing product, repackages the product with its own package and label, and distributes the product to the customer. Although the e-commerce company has little to no say in the product they receive, the company usually faces little to no in-house manufacturing constraints.

Wholesaling

A more capital-intensive approach to e-commerce, wholesaling entails maintaining quantities of inventory, keeping track of customer orders, maintaining customer shipping information, and typically having ownership of the warehouse space to house products.

Wholesalers may charge bulk pricing to retailers or unit prices for consumers. However, the broad approach to wholesaling is to connect to buyers of large quantities or many smaller buyers of a similar, standardized product.

Private Labeling

Private labeling is a more appropriate e-commerce approach for companies that may not have large upfront capital or do not have their own factory space to manufacture goods. Private label e-commerce companies send plans to a contracted manufacturer who makes the product.

The manufacturer may also have the ability to ship directly to a customer or ship directly to the company receiving the order. This method of e-commerce is best suited for companies that may receive on-demand orders with short turnaround times but are unable to handle the capital expenditure requirements.

Subscription

E-commerce companies can also leverage repeating orders or loyal customers by implementing subscription services. For a fixed price, the e-commerce company will assemble a package, introduce new products, and incentivize locking to a long-term agreement at a lower monthly price.

The consumer only places an order once and receives their subscription order at a fixed cadence. Common subscription e-commerce products include meal prep services, agriculture boxes, fashion boxes, or health and grooming products.

Businesses across a wide array of industries have rushed to adopt social media as a marketing strategy. Social media have transformed the communication landscape since customers now have the possibility to create content on social media sites of businesses and share their lived experiences with the online community. Increasingly, grocery stores are using Facebook to communicate with customers. However, there is paucity of research on the use of social media in the grocery sector. This paper aims to determine whether and investigate how Facebook has empowered customers of Tesco and Walmart. Netnography approach was adopted to observe the social media phenomenon within the grocery sector. Contents posted on the Facebook page of Tesco and Walmart were collected to explore how Facebook has empowered grocery customers. Findings show that Facebook has given a voice to the customer. Customers of Tesco and Walmart have the power to gain information, the power to complain and to criticise, the power to create value and the power to provide information to the community. This paper contributes to knowledge by revealing how Facebook has empowered grocery customers. Future research could focus on customer empowerment in anti brand communities or other online sources where customers exchange information on brands.

E-commerce has changed the way of doing business across the world. In Kenya, the impact of e-commerce on social and economic structures has also been significant. To address this gap, this study sought to carry out in-depth research into the current state of the e-commerce sub-sector in the country, highlighting the progress so far made, the prevailing challenges and the remaining gaps. The study is intended to add to the existing knowledge base on e-commerce in Kenya and contribute to the growth of this nascent industry by providing e-commerce stakeholders with insights that will inform sound decision-making while serving as input for further research. This study was exploratory in nature and employed online desk research method to source for existing literature on the e-commerce sub-sector in Kenya. The data was sourced from an array of secondary data sources from the internet including market studies, published company reports, peer-reviewed journals, newspapers, magazines, and blog postings. In this article, the concept of «black dance» is used as a critical tool to explore the lifelong dance achievements of the black dancer, choreographer and pedagogue Claude Marchant (1919–2004) in relation to history making. Marchant’s history in the US and to some extent in Europe from the 1930s to the 1960s is mapped and analysed, with the aim of better understanding his work in Sweden, and more specifically in Gothenburg. While Marchant is mentioned in previous dance historiographies, there are no in-depth explorations of his life and work. This exploration, therefore, complements both Swedish and international dance research, with an example that problematises history production in relation to black artists such as Marchant. It is argued that a participatory «dance-where-we-dig» method is a useful tool for instigating locally situated historiographical processes of change, and can relate artists such as Marchant to broader, transnational contexts.

INTERNET GAMBLING The illegal gambling business Act is predicated on violation of law. The underlying gambling activity must first be illegal in the state of which it occurs, and then meet a certain monetary threshold. Internet gambling will be acceptable if it happens where the location of betting and the place of receipt of the bet have both legalized gambling. Individual or enterprises that solicit wagers in states where wagers have not been authorized, engage in violate state laws and in many cases federal law, as well.

It is unlawful for sports books operations to take bets both over the internet and telephone from citizens of the United States. The US government is against internet gambling because it leads to gambling by minors, may be dangerous for compulsive gamblers, has potential for fraud, potential for organized crime, also money laundering. THE SALE OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS OVER THE INTERNET.It is illegal for an unregistered pharmacy to sell prescription drugs to citizens over the internet. Prescription drugs must only be distributed under the professional supervision of a physician; otherwise it is considered as ‘misbranded’.

Online pharmacies that provide these drugs without a prescription, therefore, operate illegally. Online pharmacies that provide diagnosis, prescription and distribution of drugs have to make a valid prescription; otherwise they will be considered as having distributed misbranded medication, which is illegal under the FDCA. The US government also does not approve the sale of prescription drugs over the internet, from countries whose quality and standards of the drugs are not the same as the US’s.

CONSUMER PROTECTION OVER THE INTERNETThe United States government stance on this is that a consumer should be given protection equivalent to that which he/she would have if dealing in the physical transaction. A buyer should also be made aware that some of the legal protections which he/she enjoys on off-line transactions may not apply on online transactions. Government should be at the forefront in protecting consumers through coordination with FTC at national level, and other locally oriented task forces.
