Apart from decoration of temples and other usual celebrations, the ritual of Dahi Handi is widely famous in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai. Young men and boys form a human pyramid to break a earthen pot filled with curd and hanging with ropes high above. It is symbolic of Bal Krishna as he would do the same for his fondness to curd and butter.

Janmashtami celebrations in western states of India are more spiritual than celebratory and mainly revolve around the teachings and philosophy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. People in these regions usually celebrate the day by lyrical songs and practicing Bhakti Yoga, a form of spiritual practice.

Likewise in the north eastern state of Manipur “Raslila” is performed by communities, depicting the playful and loving nature of Sri Krishna.

Significance of Krishna Janmashtami

According to Hindu mythology Krishna was born to Vasudeva and Devaki in Mathura, when the duo was imprisoned by Devaki’s brother Kamsa. Kamsa was an evil and barbarous king who was warned that Devaki’s eighth child will be born to slay him. Kamsa managed to kill six of Devaki’s sons but Vasudeva somehow managed to save the seventh and eighth child that is, Balrama and Krishna respectively.

Krishna was born in an environment of complete chaos and mismanagement. Persecution was common, there was now freedom, no liberty and people were denied even the most important of their rights. Krishna, the eighth avtaar of Vishnu was born to put an end to Kamsa’s evil reign.

Thus by celebrating Janmashtami people reaffirm their faith in their beloved lord Krishna as savior of world from evil forces.

Krishna Janmashtami is a major Hindu festival, celebrated not only in India but also in Nepal, Bangladesh, Fiji and other parts of the world with devotees of Sri Krishna. Such is the glory of Krishna that his devotees cut across the lines of religion as well as region.

Janmashtami At My Home

Janmashtami holds a special place in my heart and my experience of Janmashtami brings back nostalgic memories. I used to eagerly watch the reenactment of Krishna's birth and immerse myself in movies, plays, and discussions about his life with my sisters. Janmashtami includes various rituals, but personally, my favourite thing to do was to decorate the whole place and also dress like a Krishna idol. We used to set aside money from our allowance to honour Lord Krishna's birthday. In a way, it was a lot of fun. I yearn for those younger years. In school also teachers used to ask us to write a paragraph on Janmashtami celebration.

My sister and brother assisted with the decorations. We celebrated modestly last year inside our mandir due to the circumstances brought on by the pandemic's onset. My mother made delicious desserts at home. Every day, for a week, several television programmes about Lord Krishna were shown. I enjoyed watching them as a kid and I still love to watch these programmes. I adore Krishna's love of eating Makhan, which he used to smuggle out of his mother's kitchen. Because of this, Lord Krishna is often referred to as "Natkhat Nand Lal" . Because he was an extremely naughty child, he was named Natkhat. He enjoyed playing with friends and cows, which is why he is also known as Govind.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami

Shri Krishna Janmashtami is a lively Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Shri Krishna Vasudev, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in India. It usually takes place in August or September, on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu calendar.

Around 5,200 years ago, Lord Krishna was born in the city of Mathura, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. His parents, Devaki and Vasudev, were imprisoned by the evil King Kansa of Mathura at the time of his birth. To protect baby Krishna from Kansa’s harmful intentions, Vasudev entrusted him to his cousin Nanda. Thus, Krishna was raised with love by Nanda in Gokul. As Krishna grew up, he became strong and eventually defeated the wicked Kansa.

Lord Krishna is considered the most powerful incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and he came to Earth with the purpose of freeing the world from evil. His role in the epic Mahabharata was crucial, and he preached the principles of good karma and Bhakti, emphasizing the path of devotion.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with immense joy by Hindus worldwide. It is known by various names in different parts of India, such as Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, and Gokulashtami. On this sacred day, Hindus observe fasting and recite verses from the holy scripture, Bhagwad Gita, to seek spiritual enlightenment.

In our society, Shri Krishna Janmashtami is an annual celebration filled with happiness and excitement. The entire community comes together to decorate their surroundings with colorful lights. Temples are adorned with beautiful electric lights, flowers, and other decorative items. Elderly women gather in the community park to sing devotional songs, called Bhajans, dedicated to Lord Krishna.

A popular tradition during Janmashtami is the Dahi Handi. Children from society enthusiastically participate in the Dahi Handi contest. In his childhood, Krishna was famously known as the “butter thief” or “Makhan chor” due to his mischievous nature and love for butter. He and his friends would playfully steal butter from their neighbors.

Last year, we had a delightful experience in our society during Shri Krishna Janmashtami. Several earthen pots were hung high above the street. A group of children formed a human pyramid below the pot, attempting to reach the top. Despite the challenges, they persevered and successfully built the pyramid. The youngest boy then climbed to the top and broke the pot, showering everyone below with curd.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami brings people together, regardless of their wealth or social status, to engage in various activities. Celebrants enjoy the company of friends, relatives, and neighbors, participating in lively dancing, singing, and exchanging gifts. The youth actively participate in functions organized by the society, taking part in singing and dancing competitions, where they joyfully perform songs dedicated to Lord Krishna. Prizes are awarded to the winners, encouraging motivation and enthusiasm.

This festival instills a belief in virtuous actions and symbolizes happiness, joy, and the triumph of good over evil. It motivates people to stand against wrongdoing and signifies the victory of righteousness. To lead a happy and successful life, it is important to follow the teachings and advice given by Lord Krishna during his time on Earth. Shri Krishna Janmashtami serves as a reminder to embody qualities such as compassion, righteousness, and selfless devotion.

By celebrating Shri Krishna Janmashtami, individuals foster unity, harmony, and camaraderie among communities. The festival transcends barriers of age, gender, and social background, bringing people together in the spirit of joy and togetherness.

During Shri Krishna Janmashtami, devotees immerse themselves in the divine atmosphere by chanting devotional songs and seeking spiritual solace and enlightenment. The celebration not only commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna but also provides an opportunity for individuals to reflect upon their own lives and strive for personal growth.

Moreover, Shri Krishna Janmashtami fosters a sense of responsibility towards society and the greater good. Inspired by Lord Krishna’s teachings, devotees are encouraged to perform selfless acts of kindness and contribute to the welfare of others. Charity and philanthropy play a significant role during this auspicious festival as individuals extend their support to the underprivileged and engage in charitable endeavors.

Ultimately, Shri Krishna Janmashtami serves as a source of inspiration and guidance, encouraging individuals to lead righteous and meaningful life. It reminds us of the eternal principles of truth, love, and devotion, which can guide us toward a path of inner fulfillment and spiritual awakening.

As the festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami approaches each year, Hindus eagerly anticipate the joyous celebrations that lie ahead. It is a time when devotees come together in reverence, spreading the message of love and righteousness, and rejoicing in the divine presence of Lord Krishna. Through this auspicious occasion, Shri Krishna Janmashtami continues to inspire, uplift, and unite individuals, fostering a deep connection with spirituality and the eternal teachings of Lord Krishna.

Janmashtami Festival Celebrations

Lord Krishna was very naughty in his childhood. That’s why he is known as “Natkhat Nand Lal”. He has dark skin and loves to eat “Makhan”. Most of the time, he steals the Makhan from other homes and also breaks their handi. Due to this, he is also called “Makhan Chor”. Krishna used to play the flute very well. The flute music attracts everyone and makes them feel peaceful. On hearing the flute voice, the Gopis of the Vrindavan leave their household work and gather together to dance to the flute music.

The celebration of Janmashtami takes place at midnight because Lord Krishna was born on a dark, stormy and windy night to end the rule of Kansa. The idol of infant Krishna is bathed in Panchamrit and then in water. He is dressed in new clothes and placed in a cradle. People sing devotional songs and keep fast for the whole day. They offer fruits, flowers, sweets etc., to God and then distribute them as Prasada. The Janmashtami celebration of Vrindavan and Mathura is very famous. Raslila is also performed by various devotees to recreate the different incidents of Krishna’s life. It also shows the affection and love that Krishna has for Radha.

On this day, “Dahi Handi” games are played in various places to celebrate Krishna’s birthday. Boys get together to form human pyramids and try to break an earthen pot which is fixed at the height of about 35 ft from the ground. It is quite an exciting event with its share of nail-biting moments. Wherever a Dahi Handi takes place, lots of people gather around to cheer the participants and also enjoy the show at the same time. This scene reminds everyone of Krishna’s childhood days when he used to steal Makhan.

Story Behind Janmashtami Celebration

Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev. At that time, Kansa was the king of Mathura. He was also the brother of Devaki. After hearing the prophecy that “the eighth child of Devaki will be the cause of Kansa’s death”, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudev. He killed off their six children as they took birth. When their eighth son Krishna was born, all the soldiers of the prison went into slumber. Vasudeva, with the help of cosmic powers, takes Krishna away from Mathura by crossing the Yamuna River. He leaves him at Nand Baba and Yashoda’s house in Vrindavan. He took the baby girl whom Yashoda gave birth to and returned to Mathura. He handed the baby girl to Kansa As usual, the evil king Kansa tried to kill the baby girl. As he took his sword, the baby girl flew away and transformed into Yogmaya. She also warned him that the boy who would kill him had taken birth. In this way, Krishna was rescued and spent his childhood in Vrindavan safely. Finally, he killed his uncle, Kansa.

The evil Kansa had previously gotten rid of all the offspring of the royals and was intending to get rid of the eighth son too.

The king then gave his son to his friend Nand to save him. Krishna was then bought up in a Gokul family Nanda and Yasoda. His childhood was not lonely. There are many tales about Lord Krishna’s childhood. One of the notable ones was his likings for butter. He used to steal butter from other villager’s houses too. His friends were important to him and one of them was Radha. They had a strong bond and spent time with her frequently. As he grew up, he became stronger and would later go on to slay the evil king Kansa.

Lord Krishna was known to be very fluent at playing the flute. His melodious flute would be heard all over the village and people loved it. Not only that, but Lord Krishna had also played a very important role in the Holy Battle of Mahabharata. He was the main character who supported Pandavs against Kauravs to win the holy war. His holy advice is known as Bhagwat Gita, where he teaches Arjun about Dharma and Paap (Sin).

This festival is celebrated on the occasion of Lord Krishna’s birth who came in to end evils. It is a celebration of good over evils. On the day of Lord Krishna’s birth fasting is also observed till midnight. It is celebrated mainly at midnight as he was said to be born in the night. Crowds of people are seen in temples and other religious places to worship the god.

Another community-wide tradition common in mostly India is playing with butter as a sport. A pot full of butter is placed on a high rope and people from two teams try to break the pots turn by turn. The team which breaks the pot wins the sport. It is a fun event to watch. People also decorate their houses with garlands and other ornaments.

Temples are crowded with devotees worshipping Lord Krishna. Bells ringing, mantras are all heard throughout the day. Along with the rituals, dancing and singing are also done. Some sing ancient hymns, some clap their hands, others dance, while some pray. Children too dress up as Lord Krishna and look very adorable. Schools also conduct events such as Krishna dress-up competition, etc.

The festival truly is one of the nationwide events that take place. It brings people together as they dance and sing, take part in fun events, and have good food. It brings the feeling of joy and happiness among people and gives us the lesson that good always defeats evil. The festival teaches us that being a good human and following basic morality will do us good. The festival is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm all over India and Nepal too.

The history of Lord Krishna dates back to ancient times. Born in Mathura to King Vasudeva and Queen Devaki, his birth took place in a prison cell on a stormy night. Fearing the prophecy that her eighth child would be her brother-in-law Kansa’s slayer, Devaki’s brother smuggled the baby Krishna to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda. This escape and miraculous childhood marked the beginning of the enchanting tales of Lord Krishna’s life.

The festival is an occasion to honor and remember the divine play of Lord Krishna, whose life was dedicated to upholding the principles of truth, compassion, and righteousness.

Janmashtami falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. This auspicious day is celebrated with fasting, singing of bhajans (devotional songs), and reading from the sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavata Purana.

One of the most endearing aspects of Lord Krishna’s childhood is his loving relationship with Yashoda Maiya. She raised him as her own son, showering him with unconditional love and affection. Their bond is a symbol of the pure love between a mother and child.

Lord Krishna’s role in the Mahabharata, one of the longest epic poems in world literature, is equally significant. As the charioteer and advisor to Arjuna, he imparts invaluable wisdom and guidance in the form of the Bhagavad Gita. The teachings in the Gita provide profound insights into duty, righteousness, and devotion, making it a timeless scripture.

In conclusion, Janmashtami is a cherished celebration that honors the divine presence of Lord Krishna on Earth. It offers an opportunity to reflect on his life, teachings, and legacy. The festival serves as a reminder of the eternal struggle between good and evil, inspiring humanity to uphold righteousness and stand firm against adversity. 700 Words Janmashtami Essay In Hindi
