• భారతీయ సమాజం-మత, సాంస్కృతిక భిన్నత్వం

బహు భాషలు.. బహుళ జాతులు!

భౌగోళికంగా భూగోళం మొత్తాన్ని తలపించే వాతావరణ పరిస్థితులతో భారత ద్వీపకల్పం ఉపఖండంగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందింది. దాంతోపాటు రకరకాల జాతులు, భాషలు, సంస్కృతులు, జీవన విధానాలతో వేల సంవత్సరాలుగా వర్థిల్లుతోంది. ఇంతటి వైవిధ్యం ఎలా సాధ్యమైంది? చూడగానే ఎవరు ఏ ప్రాంతానికి చెందినవారో తేలిగ్గా గుర్తించగలిగేట్లుగా జనాభా అభివృద్ధి ఏవిధంగా జరిగింది? సమాజ నిర్మాణం అధ్యయనంలో భాగంగా ఈ అంశాలపై అభ్యర్థులు అవగాహన పెంచుకోవాలి. 

భారత భూభాగానికి ఇండియా అనే పేరు ఇండస్‌ నది నుంచి వచ్చింది. ఇది పంజాబ్‌లో ఉంది. వేదకాలం నాటి ఆర్యులు దీన్ని హిందూ అని పిలిచేవారు. ఆంగ్లేయుల వల్ల అది ఇండియాగా మారింది. భరతుడు పరిపాలించిన దేశం కాబట్టి భారతదేశంగా పిలుస్తున్నారు. మన దేశానికి వలస వచ్చిన ఆర్యుల్లో ‘భారత’ అనే సుప్రసిద్ధ తెగవారు పరిపాలించారు కాబట్టి భారతదేశం అనే పేరు వచ్చిందని కూడా చెబుతుంటారు.

భారత సమాజం అతి పురాతనమైంది. పూర్వం నుంచి వివిధ కాలాల్లో బయటి నుంచి విభిన్న జాతి, భాష, మత సమూహాలకు చెందిన ప్రజలు మన దేశానికి వచ్చి స్థిరపడ్డారు. అందువల్ల భారతదేశంలో వివిధ జాతులు, భాషలు, మతాలు, సంస్కృతి, సమూహాల మధ్య వైవిధ్యం కనిపిస్తుంది. భారత సమాజ మౌలిక లక్షణాల్లో సమష్టి కుటుంబం, కులవ్యవస్థ, గ్రామీణ సముదాయాలు ముఖ్యమైనవి. భారతీయ సామాజిక, ఆర్థిక, రాజకీయ రంగాల్లో నేటికీ ఈ లక్షణాలు ప్రాధాన్యాంశాలుగా ఉన్నాయి.

* ప్రస్తుతం సుమారు 140 కోట్ల జనాభా ఉన్న భారతదేశాన్ని అయిదు ప్రధాన సంస్కృతి సమూహాలుగా విభజించారు. 

1) ఉత్తర ప్రాంతం: దీనిలో పంజాబ్, హరియాణా, రాజస్థాన్, ఉత్తర్‌ప్రదేశ్, మహారాష్ట్రకు చెందిన సంస్కృతులు ఉన్న సమూహాలు ఉన్నాయి.

2) దక్షిణ ప్రాంతం: ఈ విభాగంలో ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్, కర్ణాటక, తమిళనాడు, కేరళ రాష్ట్రాలు ఉన్నాయి.

3) తూర్పు ప్రాంతం: ఇందులో మరాఠీ, గుజరాతీ సంస్కృతులు ఉన్నాయి.

4) పశ్చిమ ప్రాంతం: ఇక్కడ మరాఠీ సంస్కృతి ఉంది.

5) ప్రత్యేక సమూహం: భారతదేశంలో ఉన్న ఆదిమ తెగను ప్రత్యేక సాంస్కృతిక సమూహంగా చెప్పవచ్చు.

    వివరించిన ఈ భేదాలే కాకుండా హిందూ, ముస్లిం, క్రిస్టియన్, సిక్కు, బౌద్ధ, జైన, పార్శీలతో పాటు వివిధ మతాలకు చెందిన ప్రజలు నివసిస్తున్నారు. ఇలాంటి భిన్నత్వ లక్షణాలు భారతీయ సమాజంలోనే కనిపిస్తాయి.

భౌగోళిక వైవిధ్యం: భారతదేశం ఆసియా ఖండంలో దక్షిణ మధ్య భాగంలో ఉన్న ద్వీపకల్ప దేశం. దీని విస్తీర్ణం 30,53,597 చ.కి.మీ. భారత్‌కు ఉత్తరాన హిమాలయ పర్వతాలు, తూర్పున బంగాళాఖాతం, దక్షిణాన హిందూ మహాసముద్రం, పశ్చిమాన అరేబియా మహాసముద్రం సరిహద్దులుగా ఉన్నాయి. ప్రధాన భూభాగంలో సువిశాల గంగా సింధూ మైదానం, ఎడారులు, వింధ్య పర్వతాలు, దక్కన్‌ పీఠభూమి ఉన్నాయి. అనేక జీవనదుల పుట్టిల్లు. అందుకే దీన్ని ప్రపంచ సంగ్రహ స్వరూపంగా అభివర్ణించారు. ఇక్కడ శీతోష్ణస్థితి, వర్షపాతం, రుతుపవనాలు ప్రాంతాల వారీగా భిన్నంగా ఉంటాయి. ప్రజల జీవన విధానంలోనూ వైవిధ్యం కనిపిస్తుంది.

సామాజిక నిర్మితి: సామాజిక లక్ష్యాలను సాధించడానికి వ్యక్తులు నిర్ణీత ప్రమాణాలను అనుసరిస్తూ, అనుబంధ పాత్రలను నిర్వహిస్తూ అనేక సంబంధాలు రూపొందించుకుంటారు. ఇలా ఏర్పడిన సామాజిక సంబంధాల సమూహాన్నే సామాజిక నిర్మితి అంటారు. భారతీయ సమాజంలో అనేక సంస్థలు, సమూహాలు, సంఘాలు, సముదాయాలు ఉన్నాయి. వీటన్నింటినీ కలిపి భారతీయ సామాజిక నిర్మితిగా పేర్కొంటారు. 

జాతి విభాగాలు: శరీర రంగు, తల వెంట్రుకలు, ముక్కు లాంటి భాగాలకు చెందిన జైవిక లక్షణాలు, భాష, సంస్కృతుల్లో ప్రత్యేకతను కలిగి, ఒక నిర్ణీత భౌగోళిక ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన మానవ సమూహాన్ని జాతి అంటారు. రేమండ్‌ ఫిర్త్‌ అభిప్రాయంలో జాతి అంటే అనువంశికంగా పొందే కొన్ని ప్రత్యేక శారీరక లక్షణాలు ఉన్న సమూహం.

* బి.ఎస్‌.గుహ ప్రకారం భారతదేశంలో ఆరు ప్రధాన జాతులు ఉన్నాయి. అవి నిగ్రిటో, ప్రోటో అస్ట్రలాయిడ్, మంగోలాయిడ్,  మెడిటరేనియన్‌ లేదా మెడిటరేనియస్, వెస్ట్రన్‌ బ్రాకీసెఫాలిక్, నార్డిక్‌.

* మన దేశంలో అధిక సంఖ్యాకులు కాకసాయిడ్‌ జాతికి చెందుతారు. ఉత్తర్‌ప్రదేశ్, తమిళనాడులోని బ్రాహ్మణులు; పంజాబ్‌లోని సిక్కులు, గుజరాత్‌లోని నాగర బ్రాహ్మణులు ఈ జాతికి చెందినవారే. వీరి శరీరం కొద్దిపాటి తేడాలతో తెలుపు నుంచి గోధుమ వర్ణంలో ఉంటుంది. తల వెంట్రుకలు మృదువుగా ఉంటాయి. కంటిపాపలు నీలం లేదా గోధుమ రంగులో ఉంటాయి. నాసిక (ముక్కు) ఎత్తుగా, సన్నగా ఉంటుంది.

* హిమాలయ పర్వత ప్రాంతాల్లో నివసించే భారతీయులు మంగోలాయిడ్‌ జాతికి చెందినవారు. వీరి శరీర ఛాయ పసుపు రంగు నుంచి లేత గోధుమ రంగులో ఉంటుంది. కళ్లు రెండు సన్నని చీలికలుగా ఉంటాయి. తల గుండ్రంగా, ముక్కు పొట్టిగా అణిగి ఉంటుంది. వీరిని సులభంగా గుర్తించవచ్చు.

* ప్రస్తుతం నీగ్రో జాతి లక్షణాలున్నవారు భారతదేశంలో తక్కువగా ఉన్నారు. వీరి శరీర ఛాయ గోధుమ రంగు నుంచి నలుపు రంగు వరకు కొద్దిపాటి తేడాలతో ఉంటుంది. శిరోజాలు మెలికలు తిరిగి ఉంటాయి. ముక్కు వెడల్పుగా, నోరు పెద్దదిగా, పెదవులు పైకి తిరిగి లావుగా ఉంటాయి. అండమాన్‌ దీవుల్లో నివసించే తెగలు, కేరళలోని కొడార్, మధుర ప్రాంతంలోని ఫలియాన్, ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్‌లోని చెంచులు, మహారాష్ట్రలోని నిభిల్‌ తెగల వారిలో నీగ్రో జాతి లక్షణాలు కనిపిస్తాయి.

భాషాపరమైన సంయోజనం: సంస్కృతి వికాసం, సామాజిక సమైక్యత, భావప్రాసారానికి తోడ్పడే సాధనాల్లో భాష ప్రధానపాత్ర పోషిస్తుంది. బహుళ భాషా సమూహాలతో ఉన్న మన దేశంలో 1652 భాషలు, మాండలికాలు ఉన్నాయి. వీటిలో 23 భాషలు మాట్లాడే ప్రజలే దేశ జనాభాలో 97% ఉన్నారు. ఈ భాషలనే రాజ్యాంగం గుర్తించింది. భారతీయులు మాట్లాడే భాషలు అయిదు భాషా కుటుంబాలకు చెందినవి.

* యూరోపియన్‌

    ఇండో-ఆర్యన్‌ భాషలు మాట్లాడేవారు 73 శాతం, ద్రావిడ భాషలు మాట్లాడేవారు 20 శాతం; ఆస్ట్రిన్, యూరోపియన్‌ భాషలు మాట్లాడేవారు 13 శాతం, సైనో-టిబెటన్‌ భాషలు మాట్లాడేవారు 0.08 శాతం ఉన్నారు. ఇతర భాషలు మాట్లాడేవారు 4.47 శాతం ఉన్నారు.

ఆస్ట్రిన్‌ భాషా కుటుంబం: భారతదేశంలో మధ్య, ఈశాన్య ప్రాంతాల్లోని గిరిజనులు మాట్లాడే భాషల మాండలికాలు ఈ భాషా కుటుంబానికి చెందినవే. వీటిని మాట్లాడే వారిలో సంతాల్, ముండా, హూ, భిల్లులు, గోండులు ఉన్నారు.

ఇండో-ఆర్యన్‌ భాషా కుటుంబం: దేశ జనాభాలో అధికశాతం ఈ భాషా కుటుంబానికి చెందినవారే. దీనిలో హిందీ, బెంగాలీ, మరాఠీ, గుజరాతీ, పంజాబీ, రాజస్థానీ, అస్సామీ, సంస్కృతం, సింధీ, కశ్మీరీ, ఉర్దూ లాంటి భాషలు ఉన్నాయి.

ద్రావిడ భాషా కుటుంబం: ఈ భాషా కుటుంబంలో దక్షిణ భారతదేశంలోని ప్రజలు మాట్లాడే భాషల మాండలికాలు ఉంటాయి. తెలుగు, తమిళం, కన్నడ, మలయాళం ఇందులోనివే.

సైనో-టిబెట్‌ భాషా కుటుంబం: దీనిలో ఈశాన్య భారతానికి చెందిన కొన్ని ఆదిమ తెగల భాషల మాండలికాలు ఉన్నాయి.

యూరోపియన్‌ భాషా కుటుంబం: ఇందులో ఇంగ్లిష్, పోర్చుగీస్, ఫ్రెంచి భాషలు ఉన్నాయి. గోవాలో పోర్చుగీసు, పుదుచ్చేరిలో ఫ్రెంచి భాషలు వాడుకలో ఉన్నాయి.

         హిందీని జాతీయ భాషగా, అధికార భాషగా; ఇంగ్లిష్‌ను అసోసియేట్‌ భాషగా గుర్తించారు. గతంలో సంస్కృతంలా ప్రస్తుతం హిందీ, ఇంగ్లిష్‌ భాషలు భారతీయ భాషల మధ్య వారధిగా ఉపకరిస్తున్నాయి. జాతీయ సమైక్యతను పెంపొందించడంలో వీటి పాత్ర గణనీయమైంది.

2011 లెక్కల ప్రకారం భారతదేశ జనాభాలో హిందీ మాట్లాడేవారు 52.83 కోట్లు (43.63%), బెంగాలీ మాట్లాడేవారు 9.72 కోట్లు (8.03%), మరాఠి మాట్లాడేవారు 8.30 కోట్లు (6.86%), తెలుగు మాట్లాడేవారు 8.11 కోట్లు (6.70%), తమిళం మాట్లాడేవారు 6.90 కోట్లు (5.70%), ఉర్దూ మాట్లాడేవారు 5.07 కోట్లు (4.19%), గుజరాతి మాట్లాడేవారు 5.54 కోట్లు (4.58%), మలయాళం మాట్లాడేవారు 3.48 కోట్లు (2.88%), పంజాబీ మాట్లాడేవారు 3.31 కోట్లు ( 2.74%), కన్నడ మాట్లాడేవారు 4.37 కోట్లు (3.61%) మంది ఉన్నారు.

Women Empowerment essay in Telugu మహిళా సాధికారత వ్యాసం: Empowering women means making them empowered to take control of their lives.   Through the years, women have been subject to a lot of abuse by men.   They were almost non-existent in earlier centuries.   As though all rights, even basic ones like voting, belonged to men.   As the times changed, women began to realize their power.   The revolution for women empowerment began.

Women empowerment was a welcome breath of fresh air, as women were not allowed make their own decisions.   They were made aware of their rights and the importance of making their own decisions in society, rather than relying on men.   It understood that people’s gender does not guarantee success.   We still have much to learn about the reasons we need it.

Need for Women Empowerment

Nearly every country, regardless of its progress, has a history that treats women cruelly.   This means that women all over the globe have rebelled to attain the status they enjoy today.   Women empowerment is still a problem in third world countries, such as India. While western countries have made progress, India remains behind.

Women empowerment in India is more important than ever.   India is one of the least safe countries for women.   There are many reasons why this is so.   First, honor killings are a real threat to women in India.   Their family believes it is right to kill them if they cause shame to their legacy.

Furthermore, education and freedom are very restricted in this country.   Women cannot pursue higher education and are often married off too early.   In some areas, men still dominate women as if it is the woman’s job to work for them endlessly.   They don’t allow them to go out and have any freedom.

Domestic violence is another problem in India.   Men beat and abuse their wives because they believe women are their property.   Women are afraid to speak out.   Equally, women who actually work are paid less than their male counterparts.   It is unfair and discriminatory to pay someone less for the exact same work due to their gender.   We see that women empowerment is the urgent need.   These women must be empowered to stand up for themselves and not be victim to injustice.

How can women be empowered?

There are many ways to empower women.   It is up to the government and individuals to work together in order for it to happen.   It is essential that girls are educated so they can be literate and able to live independently.

Equal opportunities for women in all fields must be provided, regardless of their gender.   Equal pay must be provided for them.   By ending child marriage, we can empower women.   There must be a variety of programs where women can learn skills to manage their finances in the event of financial crisis.

The shame of abuse and divorce must be removed.   Fear of society is a major reason why many women remain in abusive relationships.   It is important for parents to teach their daughters that it is OK to bring home a divorced spouse, rather than burying them in a coffin.

జాతి ద్వారా భాషకు, భాష ద్వారా జాతికి ఒక విశిష్టమైన గౌరవం ఏర్పడుతుంది. ఒక జాతి పురోగమన మార్గమును తల్లిభాష ముందుండి నడిపిస్తుంది. తెలుగును రక్షించి, అభివృద్ధి పథంలో నడిపిస్తూ, తెలుగు వెలుగులను ప్రాచుర్యంలోకి తెస్తామన్న వాగ్ధానాలు తీర్చకపోగా, ఇంకా నిరాదరణకు గురి కావడం చాలా బాధాకరం.

ఇంగ్లాండు నుంచి వచ్చి, ఉద్యోగ శిక్షణలో భాగంగా తెలుగు నేర్చుకుని, భాషపై మమకారం పెంచుకొని, తాళపత్రాలు సేకరించి, మిణుకు మిణుకు మంటున్న తెలుగు దీపాన్ని వెలిగించాడు బ్రౌన్ దొర. ఒక విదేశీయుడు తెలుగు భాష కోసం అంత చేయగలిగినపుడు, మన ప్రభుత్వాలు మన భాషా సంరక్షణ కోసం ఇంకెంత చేయవచ్చు?

భాష భావాల వ్యక్తీకరణ మాత్రమే కాదు, మానవ సంబంధాలను అభివృద్ధి పరిచే సాంస్కృతిక ప్రతిబింబం. ఉగ్గుపాలతోపాటు మనోభావాలు మాటల్లో, పాటల్లో బిడ్డకు చేరుతాయి.  'చందమామ రావే.... జాబిల్లి రావే...' అనే పాటలో బిడ్డ ఎంత ఆనందం పొందుతుందో, సరస్వతీ దేవి కూడా అంతే పరవశమౌతుంది.

పరిణామ క్రమంలో ఎన్నో విషయాల్లో ఎన్నో మార్పులు జరిగుతాయి.  అందుకు భాష కూడా అతీతం కాదు. ఆ మార్పు తెలుగులో ఎక్కువగా జరుగుతుంది అని చెప్పవచ్చు.  పక్కన ఉండే తమిళనాడు, కర్ణాటక, మహారాష్ట్రలలో మాతృ భాష పై మమకారం ఎక్కువ. ఇంకో భాషకు అస్సలు ప్రాధాన్యం ఇవ్వరు.  మరి మన తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో ప్రభుత్వాలే దగ్గరుండి మాతృభాషకు ద్రోహం తలపెడుతున్నారు. దానికి మేధావులు వత్తాసు పలుకుతున్నారు.

తెలుగు వికాసంలో ఎవరెవరు ఎలా మార్పులు తీసుకొచ్చారు అన్నప్పుడు  కందుకూరి వీరేశలింగం పంతులు  తెలుగు సమాజంలో మార్పు తేవడానికి, గురజాడ అప్పారావు  తెలుగు సాహిత్యానికి ఎంత సేవ చేశారో, అధికార భాషను  ప్రజల భాషగా మార్చడానికి గిడుగు రామమూర్తి పంతులు గారు అంత కృషి చేశారు.  అందుకే తెలుగు భాషా దినోత్సవం అనగానే గిడుగు వారు మన కళ్ళముందు దర్శనమిస్తారు.

రాయప్రోలు, త్రిపురనేని, చిలకమర్తి, పానుగంటి, ఉన్నవ, విశ్వనాథ, శ్రీ శ్రీ, కాళోజీ, సినారె మొదలగు ఎందరో కవులు తెలుగు సాహిత్యాన్ని ఉన్నత శిఖరాలకు చేర్చినారు.  సురవరం ప్రతాప రెడ్డి  దినపత్రికలలో భాషా విప్లవానికి నాంది పలికారు. భక్తి మార్గంలో త్యాగయ్య, క్షేత్రయ్య, అన్నమయ్య, తరిగొండ వెంగమాంబ, రామదాసు, పుట్టపర్తి, దేవులపల్లి... ఇలా ఎందరో సాంస్కృతిక పునరుజ్జీవనానికి కారకులైనారు.

ఈనాడు భారత దేశంలో హిందీ తర్వాత అత్యధికంగా మాట్లాడే భాష తెలుగు.  ప్రపంచంలో ఇది పదహారవ స్థానం ఆక్రమించింది.  అతి సులభతరమైన ప్రపంచ భాషలలో  మాండరిన్ తర్వాత తెలుగు రెండో స్థానంలో ఉంది.  కానీ ఇపుడు ఆధునిక పరిణామ మార్పుల నేపథ్యంలో విపరీతంగా నిరాదరణకు గురవుతున్న భాషల్లో కూడా తెలుగు ముందంజలో ఉండడం చాలా బాధాకరం.  ఒక భాషకు ప్రాధాన్యత తగ్గితే దాని చుట్టూ వేలాది సంవత్సరాల చరిత్ర, సంస్కృతి, సంప్రదాయాలు కూడా తెరమరుగవుతాయని గమనించాలి.  వేరుకు చెదలు పడితే మహా వృక్షమైనా నేల కూలక తప్పదు.  పరిస్థితి మన భాషకు రాకముందే మనం మేలుకోవడం మంచిది.

ఏ పని అయినా కలిసి కట్టుగా చేస్తే అందులో విజయం సాధించవచ్చు.  అప్పట్లో గిడుగు రామమూర్తి  ఒక్కరే ఛాందస భాషావాదులతో  ఎదురీది నిలిచారు.  ఇప్పుడు ప్రజలు, ప్రభుత్వాలు కూడా కలిసి పని చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఉంది.  తల్లిదండ్రుల ప్రభావం పిల్లలపై చాలా ఉంటుంది.  పర భాషా వ్యామోహంలో పడి, తల్లి భాషను మాట్లాడడానికి సిగ్గు పడుతున్నారు.  పాఠశాలల్లో తెలుగు మాట్లాడితే ఫైన్ లు వేస్తున్నారు.  దీనిని తల్లిదండ్రులు సమర్ధిస్తున్నారు. అమ్మను అమ్మా అని పిలవొద్దనే దౌర్భాగ్య విష సంస్కృతి వచ్చి చేరింది.  వేరే భాషలెన్నైనా నేర్చుకోండి, మన భాషను వీడకండి, మరువకండి.

విదేశాలకెళ్ళిన వారు సైతం మాతృదేశాన్ని, భాషను, సంస్కృతులను పద్ధతులను పాటించడం చూడ ముచ్చటగా ఉంది.  ఇక్కడున్న వాళ్ళేమో మాతృ భాషకు మరణ శాసనం రాస్తున్నారు.  చదువులో అన్ని విషయాల మీద ఉన్న శ్రద్ధ తెలుగు పైన చూపడంలేదు.  ఇది చాలా సిగ్గుచేటు.  మలేషియా, సింగపూర్ లలో ఉండే తెలుగు వారు ఏటేటా తెలుగు దినోత్సవాలు జరుపుకుంటున్నారు.  ఇక్కడున్నవారు తెలుగు తప్ప అన్నీ కావాలంటున్నారు.

ఎంత విజ్ఞానం పెరిగినా, ఆంగ్ల పదజాలం పెరిగినా, పెరిగిన సాంకేతిక నైపుణ్యం ద్వారా తెలుగులో కూడా ఆధునిక మార్పులు చేసి ఉపయోగించవచ్చు.  ఆ రకంగా ప్రయత్నాలు చేయాలి.  ఒకటో తరగతి నుంచి పన్నెండవ తరగతి వరకు తప్పనిసరిగా తెలుగును చేయడం, తర్వాత ఐచ్ఛికం చేయడం వల్ల ముందు తరాలకు తెలుగును అందించవచ్చు.  లేదంటే జీవద్భాష నుండి మృతభాషగా మారుతుంది. అందమైన అమ్మ భాషను కాపాడుకుందాం.

Essay: Telugu, by heart

In a multilingual country, each citizen picks up languages with varying degrees of proficiency. the author muses over her peculiar relationship with telugu.

I still remember the farthest corner of my school building in Hyderabad, a blind alley that had hurriedly been turned into a language room. The then Andhra government, about two-and-a-half decades ago, had made Telugu compulsory in school, converting microscopic spaces into classrooms, fitting students in all possible corners. In that dull tube-lit room, we were 50 odd students, with a teacher in her cotton pattu saree and a bonde mallu (jasmine) string on her low bun.

Through the dense afternoon brain fog, I would copy Telugu words in my notebook, making quick notes on pronunciation in English on top. Every week, for five years, I managed to ace my Telugu third language examinations with this simple strategy – associate a self-calibrated English-like pronunciation to every word, learn all the answers “by heart” and write the exams, without fundamentally comprehending the language.

Even today, 25 years later, every time I travel from Kolkata – where I now live – to Hyderabad, ask me to read the ads on the buses and billboards in Telugu or newspaper headlines, and I’ll rattle the lines without blinking. But if anyone on the street asks for directions in the south Indian language, I’d neither be able understand nor reply. This is simply because I learnt Telugu, “by heart”.

Back in 1956, linguistic nationalism led to the creation of Andhra Pradesh. The movement for statehood was based on carving a separate state for people who spoke Telugu. The capital shifted from the Telugu-speaking zone of Kurnool to the once Nizam-controlled territory of Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, more than 50% spoke Telugu, but were equally at ease with Dakhni, a variety of Hindustani that’s an easy blend of Hindi and Urdu. Today, Telugu is compulsory in schools of the now-divided states of Telangana and Andhra, which together have a population that’s larger than all of France, South Korea and Turkey. At the English medium school I attended, Hindi, my mother tongue, was my second language, and Telugu became my third language. It’s a language that I have never really needed to use.

Listening and talking, these two activities, underpin each other. Without practising actual conversations in a language, one will always be at loss for words. Any attempt at conversations in Telugu, say, with airport staff or vegetable vendors, still has me mumbling slowly. With my straight As, I had assumed I was a bit of a prodigy who had aced the secret learning by rote strategy. That’s until I went to my school reunion a couple of years ago. It emerged that while some students learnt the language from their local domestic help and others took tuitions, most had “by-hearted” it. The trick was constant repetition. Each of the Telugu rhymes, names of seasons, days of week or even long phrases were repeated for hours, until they glided off our tongues.

Telugu wasn’t the only third language; there was Sanskrit and Urdu too. Another friend studied Arabic as a fourth language. Her parents wanted her to be able to read the Quran . I dared to ask her, in rather hushed tones, about the point of reading a text without comprehending it. “Back then, it felt like compulsion. But today, it is preparing for a future: a larder of sorts, for those extended periods of hunger when reciting it would bring comfort to me, like a mothers breast. The Arabic sounds, in the first chapter known as the The Key or Al-Fatiha , when recited, is mathematically coded. Your lips touch 19 times, represent a numerical Al-Hamdu , Na’budu , Mustaqim . The Sura 1 is mathematically coded: when you recite it, it reverberates a celestial sound,” she said.

A day after that school reunion in 2016, I strolled down to my neighbourhood bookshop and went to the regional languages section. Perhaps idi and vaari would charm my more evolved mind, or tug at my heart with its heavenly sounds. There was Vennello Aadapilaa by Yanadamoori and Rendu Rellu Aaru by Malladi and a scattering of a few other books. But where were Gogu Shyamala, or Chalam Or Jajula Gowri, the contemporary Telugu authors that had been making waves on the literary circuit? I finally picked a popular classic, Boya Jangaiah (Jatra) , a novel about life in the villages of Telangana dealing with superstitions and minorities, a novel rich in anecdotes. I only managed to squeeze past the first chapter. There was just so much to do in preparation for my next book launch! The following month, I attempted it again, but my sister was in town so I ended up spending quality time with her. The book lay on my bed side table for many months but something always came up: I had to finish Urvashi Butalia’s essays for work, and then there was a lot of reading to finish on JStor. Someone had gifted me a copy of The Hungry Tide by Amitava Ghosh and insisted I prioritize it. The last time I tried to finish reading it, I couldn’t find it. This year, at the airport, I picked up The Greatest Telugu Stories ever Told , a lovely anthology translated by Krishnamoorty and Dasu, and read it cover to cover. I’m now resigned to the possibility that Jatra may forever be a great novel that I couldn’t finish reading.

రిపబ్లిక్ డే 2024 , 250 పదాల్లో రిపబ్లిక్ డే వ్యాసం (republic day essay in telugu 250 words), గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవం - చరిత్రలో  కొన్ని నిజాలు (republic day facts and history).

• భారత రాజ్యాంగం 1950 జనవరి 26న ఉదయం 10:18 గంటలకు అమల్లోకి వచ్చింది (అధికారికంగా చట్టపరమైన చలామణిలోకి వచ్చింది) ఆ తర్వాత భారతదేశం రిపబ్లిక్ దేశంగా మారింది.
• భారత రాజ్యాంగం ప్రపంచంలోనే అతి పొడవైన లిఖిత రాజ్యాంగం (ఇది ఒక్క రోజులో చదవడం కుదరలదు). భారత రాజ్యాంగంలో 22 భాగాలు, 12 షెడ్యూల్‌లు, 97 సవరణలలో 448 వ్యాసాలు ఉన్నాయి. 
• భారత రాజ్యాంగాన్ని డా. భీమ్‌రావ్ రామ్‌జీ అంబేద్కర్ (డా. బీఆర్ అంబేద్కర్) రచించారు. ఆయనను భారత రాజ్యాంగ పితామహుడిగా పిలుస్తారు.
• భారత రాజ్యాంగం రెండు కాపీలు చేతితోనే రాయబడ్డాయి. ఒకటి ఇంగ్లీషులో, ఒకటి హిందీలో.
• 1950 జనవరి 24న భారత రాజ్యాంగం  రెండు చేతితో రాసిన కాపీలపై దాదాపు 308 మంది అసెంబ్లీ సభ్యులు సంతకం చేశారు.
• వాస్తవానికి చేతితో రాసిన రెండు భారత రాజ్యాంగ కాపీలు పార్లమెంటు హౌస్‌లోని లైబ్రరీలో హీలియం నిండిన కేసులలో సురక్షితంగా ఉంచారు. 
• భారత రాజ్యాంగం ఆవిర్భవించిన తర్వాత దాదాపు 94 సవరణలు (మార్పులు) జరిగాయి.
• సత్యమేవ జయతే (అతి పెద్ద భారతీయ నినాదం) ముండక ఉపనిషత్తు, అథర్వవేదం నుంచి తీసుకోబడింది. ఇది 1911లో అబిద్ అలీతో హిందీలో మొదటిసారిగా అనువదించబడింది.
• జన గణ మన (జాతీయ గీతం) రవీంద్రనాథ్ ఠాగూర్ బెంగాలీ భాషలో మొదట రాశారు.
• జన గణ మన (జాతీయ గీతం) మొట్టమొదట 1911లో అబిద్ అలీ హిందీ భాషలోకి అనువదించారు. తర్వాత  దీనిని అధికారికంగా 1950లో జనవరి 24న భారత జాతీయ గీతంగా ఆమోదించారు.
• భారత జాతీయ గీతం సాహిత్యం, సంగీతాన్ని 1911లో రవీంద్రనాథ్ ఠాగూర్ అందించారు.
• 1911 డిసెంబర్ 27న కోల్‌కత్తలోని భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్ సమావేశంలో భారత జాతీయ గీతం తొలిసారిగా పాడబడింది.
• భారత జాతీయ గీతం పాడటానికి లేదా ఆడటానికి 52 సెకన్లు పడుతుంది.
• 1950లో జనవరి 26న భారత తొలి రాష్ట్రపతి డాక్టర్ రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ (ప్రభుత్వ గృహంలోని దర్బార్ హాలులో) తొలిసారిగా ప్రమాణ స్వీకారం చేశారు.
• గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవం సందర్భంగా భారత రాష్ట్రపతి జాతీయ జెండాను ఎగురవేసినప్పుడు ప్రతి సంవత్సరం 21 గన్ సెల్యూట్‌లు అందజేస్తారు.
• భారతదేశ గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవ వేడుకలు బీటింగ్ రిట్రీట్ సమయంలో 'అబిడ్ బై మి' (ఇది అత్యంత ప్రజాదరణ పొందిన ట్యూన్, మహాత్మా గాంధీకి ఇష్టమైనది,క్రైస్తవ శ్లోకం) పాటను పాడటం ద్వారా మూడు రోజులు కొనసాగుతుంది.
• బీటింగ్ రిట్రీట్ వేడుక జనవరి 29న విజయ్ చౌక్‌లో ఇండియన్ ఆర్మీ, ఎయిర్ ఫోర్స్, నేవీ బ్యాండ్‌ల ప్రదర్శనతో జరుగుతుంది. ఇది భారతదేశంలో గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవం ముగింపును సూచిస్తుంది.

తెలుగులో 200 పదాల్లో రిపబ్లిక్ డే వ్యాసం (Republic day essay in telugu 200 words)

• భారత రాజ్యాంగం కేవలం కాలిగ్రాఫ్ చేయబడింది. ముద్రించబడలేదు. ఇప్పటి వరకు 1000 కాపీలు మాత్రమే రాయబడ్డాయి.
• దేశాధ్యక్షుడు గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవం రోజున ప్రసంగించగా దేశ ప్రధాని స్వాతంత్ర్య దినోత్సవం సందర్భంగా ప్రసంగించాలనే నియమం ఉంది. 
• భారత స్వతంత్రం కోసం పోరాడి తమ ప్రాణాలను త్యాగం చేసిన భారత వీర జవాన్లకు నివాళులర్పించేందుకు ప్రధాని ప్రతి జాతీయ సందర్భంలో అమర్ జవాన్ జ్యోతికి పూలమాల వేస్తారు.
• భారతదేశ గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవం రోజున అర్హులైన అభ్యర్థులందరికీ పరమ వీర్ చక్ర, మహా వీర్ చక్ర, వీర్ చక్ర, కీర్తి చక్ర, అశోక చక్ర వంటి శౌర్య పురస్కారాలతో సత్కరించడం జరుగుతుంది. 
• జనవరి 26, 1950న భారతదేశం మొదటి గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవానికి ఇండోనేషియా అధ్యక్షుడు సుకర్ణో మొదటి ముఖ్య అతిథిగా హాజరయ్యారు.
• మాలిక్ గులాం మొహమ్మద్ (పాకిస్తాన్ మొదటి గవర్నర్ జనరల్) 1955లో రాజ్‌పథ్ పరేడ్‌కు మొదటి ముఖ్య అతిథి (రిపబ్లిక్ డే పరేడ్ మొదటిసారి ప్రారంభమైంది).
• గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవం రోజున వివిధ రంగాలలో బాలల సాహస విజయాల కోసం 1957లో భారత ప్రభుత్వం పిల్లలకు శౌర్య పురస్కారాలను అందించే ఆచారం ప్రారంభించింది.
• 1950లో ప్రతి సంవత్సరం జనవరి 26వ తేదీని "స్వరాజ్ దివస్"గా జరుపుకోవాలని నిర్ణయించడం జరిగింది. 
• 1961 గణతంత్ర దినోత్సవ వేడుకలకు బ్రిటన్‌కు చెందిన క్వీన్ ఎలిజబెత్ ముఖ్య అతిథిగా విచ్చేశారు. 
• 1965 జనవరి 26న హిందీ భాషను మన జాతీయ భాషగా ప్రకటించారు.
• జనవరి 26, 1950న, సారనాథ్‌లోని అశోక సింహం భారతదేశ జాతీయ చిహ్నంగా ఎంపికైంది.
• వందేమాతరం 1950 జనవరి 24న భారతదేశ జాతీయ గీతంగా స్వీకరించబడింది. ఈ పాట బంకిం చంద్ర చటోపాధ్యాయ రచించిన దేశభక్తి నవల ‘ఆనందమఠం’ కవిత నుంచి తీసుకోవడం జరిగింది.  
• భారత రాజ్యాంగం ప్రపంచంలోని అత్యుత్తమ రాజ్యాంగాలలో ఒకటిగా పరిగణించబడుతుంది, ఎందుకంటే 2018 వరకు కేవలం 102 సవరణలు మాత్రమే జరిగాయి, ఇది బలమైన రాజ్యాంగాలలో ఒకటిగా నిలిచింది.
