Unemployment is an unfortunate circumstance many find themselves in; it is a challenge that civilized society faces today. When people are unemployed, they look for jobs but cannot get them. As a result, they are left without a source of income and cannot adequately provide for themselves and their families. This, in turn, can lead to various issues, including depression.

Unemployment is a social, economic, and political issue. It leaves many people in poverty and prevents people from obtaining a source of income. As a result, politicians capture the eyes of voters by promising to lower the unemployment rate to get elected.

You can get started by reading these essay examples if you are writing essays about unemployment.

6 Examples of Essays About Unemployment

1. unemployment reflection by christopher haynes, 2. what i learned from nearly a year of unemployment by becca slaughter, 3. why aren’t europe and canada in the same boat as u.s. for unemployment by glen hendrix, 4. a global dilemma: how unemployment creates poverty by tess hinteregger, 5. why has covid-19 been especially harmful for working women by nicole bateman and martha ross, 6. youth day and ordeal of nigerian youth by utomi jerome-mario, essay prompts about unemployment, 1. unemployment during the covid-19 pandemic, 2. the connection between unemployment and crime, 3. unemployment: whose fault is it, 4. the causes of unemployment, 5. the effects of unemployment.

“In order to secure work, we must be prepared to change or upgrade our skills and be willing to relocate if necessary. But some people are not interested in retraining to find work in another field, some people do not have the confidence to go out and look for work, and some refuse to accept a job they feel is below their level. Unless people like this change their attitudes, they will not be able to find work.”

Haynes provides two perspectives on unemployment; first, that the government should do more to address it, and second, that if people want work, they must adjust to make a living. He believes that many are unemployed because they are unwilling to change their skillset or relocate to get a job. Therefore, more should be done to reduce unemployment, but it goes both ways; everyone must put in the effort.

“I remember feeling embarrassed and powerless. I was angry it wasn’t my decision. I was happy I didn’t have to go back there, yet I was stressed about not having anywhere to go. Ultimately, I felt an overwhelming sadness that left me terrified. While I was overflowing with confusing and contradicting emotions, I somehow felt empty.”

In her essay, Slaughter reflects on her unemployed time and how it changed her. Her previous job was long and stressful, but whenever someone would ask her what she did for a living, she was embarrassed and regretful for not being there anymore. In addition to losing her job, she feels like she lost a part of herself at that time. Thankfully, she got a new job, one less taxing than her previous one.

“You would think paying all that money year after year to a government whose purpose is to “establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” would entitle that person to a modicum of “blessings” to insure his “tranquility” and “general welfare” in case of some stupid virus pandemic. It would certainly be the “just” thing to do. And that person’s “posterity” might look a bit less bleak. European governments and Canada did just that. And it’s not even explicitly stated in the preamble to their constitution.”

Hendrix criticizes the United States’ response to the unemployment problem caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that Canada and European nations have done a much better job. He discusses how much better their unemployment benefit system is compared to the U.S. and how it is ironic that the United States, whose constitution says all of these things promoting justice and wellbeing, cannot provide that for its citizens during a global pandemic.

“While unemployment can create poverty, poverty also reduces the chance of being employed. To ensure that those who are affected by unemployment do not fall into the negative cycle, researchers believe that governments should focus on improving quality education and training all young people so they remain in school.”

Hinteregger, in her essay, explains the link between unemployment and poverty, writing that it leads to the loss of income. People will also have to raise their families in poverty, which perpetuates the cycle of poverty. In addition, the poor may resort to violence to make a living. She points out the sheer irony of this issue, as unemployment causes poverty while poverty may also reduce the chance of being employed.

“COVID-19 is hard on women because the U.S. economy is hard on women, and this virus excels at taking existing tensions and ratcheting them up. Millions of women were already supporting themselves and their families on meager wages before coronavirus-mitigation lockdowns sent unemployment rates skyrocketing and millions of jobs disappeared. And working mothers were already shouldering the majority of family caregiving responsibilities in the face of a childcare system that is wholly inadequate for a society in which most parents work outside the home.”

Bateman and Ross write about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on women. Many women are forced to go through so much to provide for their families; however, the lockdowns led to many of them losing their jobs. The unemployment rate for women rose dramatically, by 12 percent, from February to April of 2020. It has been difficult for them to balance work with taking care of their families, women’s primary role as dictated by society.

“Youth unemployment is potentially dangerous as it sends a signal to all segments of the Nigerian Society. Here in Nigeria, the rate of youth unemployment is high, even at the period of economic normalcy i.e. the oil boom of the 1970s (6.2 per cent); 1980s (9.8 per cent) and the 1990s (11.5 per cent). Youth unemployment therefore is not a recent phenomenon. But if what happened in the 1980s/90s were a challenge of sorts, what is happening presently, going by the latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), is a challenge.”

Jerome-Mario’s essay focuses on several issues affecting the Nigerian youth, including unemployment. The country has a high unemployment rate; over a fourth of the youth population is unemployed. He stresses the importance of the youth using their voice to make a change and to persuade the government to care for its citizens more.

How COVID-19 contributed to the nursing shortage?

The pandemic and its lockdown policies have undoubtedly caused many people to lose jobs. Look into the impact of COVID-19 on the unemployment rate, particularly during the early months of the pandemic. Which sectors were most affected? Pull data and statistics to show how the public was affected by the covid-19 pandemic in terms of unemployment.

Many say that unemployment leads to higher crime rates. Do you believe this is true? Research how unemployment is linked to crime; examine the effects of unemployment on mental health; and conclude whether this may contribute to the increased likelihood of committing a crime.

In Haynes’ essay, he claims that employers/the government, and workers are to blame for unemployment. After reading his essay and both arguments, who do you believe is at fault? Explain your response in detail, and make sure to provide a solid base of evidence.

Unemployment has many contributing causes. Assuming a non-pandemic setting, research what causes unemployment and list them down in your essay. Elaborate on each one and, if you can draw connections, explain them as well.

As a grave issue, unemployment has many severe effects, notably poverty. For your essay, write about the effects of unemployment on a person, both physical and mental. How are they connected? What secondary effects might they produce? For a compelling and argumentative essay, answer these questions using research material and interview data.

Unemployment Essay

500+ words essay on unemployment.

Unemployment is a serious problem among young people. There are thousands of people who do not have any work to do and cannot find work for themselves. Unemployment refers to the situation where a person wants to work but cannot find employment in the labour market. One of the major reasons that contribute to unemployment is the large population of India and the limited availability of resources. In this essay on unemployment, we will discuss all these issues responsible for unemployment in India and how we can overcome this problem. Students must go through this unemployment essay to get ideas on how to write an effective essay on the topic related to unemployment. Also, they can practice more CBSE essays on different topics to boost their writing skills.

Unemployment is measured by the unemployment rate, defined as the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of the labour force. The unemployment rate for the year 2013-14 in rural India was 4.7%, whereas it was 5.5% for urban India. In the short term, unemployment significantly reduces a person’s income and, in the long term, it reduces their ability to save for retirement and other goals. Unemployment is a loss of valuable productive resources to the economy. The impact of job loss in rural and regional areas flows through the local community, damaging businesses.

Reason for Unemployment

An unemployed person is one who is an active member of the labour force and is seeking work but is unable to find any work for himself. There are multiple reasons behind the unemployment of a person. One of them is the slow economic growth, due to which jobs in adequate numbers are not created. Excessive dependence on agriculture and slow growth of non-farm activities also limit employment generation. Unemployment in urban areas is mainly the result of substantial rural migration to urban areas. This has also resulted in a labour workforce in cities. The lack of technology and proper machinery has also contributed to unemployment.

The present educational system is based on theoretical knowledge instead of practical work. Thus, it lacks the development of aptitude and technical qualifications required for various types of work among job seekers. This has created a mismatch between the need and availability of relevant skills and training. This results in unemployment, especially among the youth and educated people with high degrees and qualifications. Apart from it, the lack of investment and infrastructure has led to inadequate employment opportunities in different sectors.

Steps to Eliminate Unemployment

Various strategies and proposals have been implemented to generate employment. Many Employment programmes and policies have been introduced and undertaken to boost self-employment and help unemployed people engage in public works. The Government of India has taken several policy measures to fight the problem of unemployment. Some of the measures are the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), National Skill Development Mission, Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY), Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).

Despite the measures taken by the government, India remains a country experiencing severe unemployment problems. It can be resolved by imparting education in such a way that youth get the necessary skills so as to get employment easily. Setting up various vocational training and vocational courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students will help in finding employment for youth. The government needs to emphasise these courses at the primary level and make them a compulsory part of the curriculum to make students proficient in their early stages of life. Career counselling should be provided within schools and colleges so that students can choose a better career option based on their interests and ability. Government should create more job opportunities for the youth and graduates.

India is a fast-growing economy. There is an enormous scope for improvement in the unemployment sector. The various measures and steps taken by the government to increase the employment rate have succeeded to a great extent. The widespread skill development programmes have gained popularity across the nation. With better enforcement of the strategies, the employment level can be significantly improved. Although, we have to go a long way before we can say that all the people in India will get employment.

It is well researched that unemployment is connected with negative health consequences. Unemployment leads to stress-related illnesses and a lowered self-esteem as a result of unmet psychological and social needs in such contexts as: time structure, social interaction, common goals, status, identity, recognition and also uncertainty about the future, financial instability, and loss of vocational identity.... That is why questions of coping become key issues.

City Aphorisms

Tags: Mason Cooley

In a dynamic, changing economy like ours, there will always be frictional unemployment. Many economists believe that the basic cause of frictional unemployment is imperfect or incomplete information, which prevents individuals from leaving one job and finding another instantly. Consider the situation where there are 1,000 job vacancies and 1,000 persons with the qualifications to fill the jobs. Will there be some unemployment? It is likely that there will be because not every one of the 1,000 job seekers will know where an available job is, nor will all employers give the job to the first applicant who knocks on the door (employers don't know if "better" applicants are around the corner). Matching qualified workers with jobs takes time.

There are stories --legends, really -- of the "steady job." Old-timers gather graduates around the flickering light of a computer monitor and tell stories of how the company used to be, back when a job was for life, not just for the business cycle.... The graduates snicker. A steady job! They've never heard of such a thing.

You can use the time to look into something new that you’ve always wanted to try. Whether that is a different career path or a new employer, or even if it is a dream of being self-employed. This is the time to rebuild your life into what you have always wanted it to be.

3. “Life actually is this mystery and gift. And every moment of it can be full of real radical joy and wakefulness. And for some reason in our most difficult times, we have the best chance to wake up. Many people will tell you that their divorce or illness or loss of job was the wake up call.” – Elizabeth Lesser

You never know what will happen next in life. No matter how much you plan, the path can change unexpectedly. Sometimes this means taking a step back before turning down the next path.

When terrible things happen in your life, do what Lesser suggests and think of it as a wakeup call. Instead of thinking that your life is over or that everything will be bad, reassess the situation. Think about what you could be doing differently, or what you would like to do instead.

There is always something that comes next, no matter what the situation is. Try not to fixate on the discouragement you’re feeling.

4. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

If you want a better future for yourself, you can’t give up if you become unemployed. Believe in yourself and your ability to move forward and succeed. The future doesn’t belong to those who give up, it belongs to those who keep pushing on.

5. “Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

You must have hope if you want to get through this hardship. The entire situation will seem less terrifying if you just keep your hope. Things will always get better, so remaining positive only helps it come sooner.

6. “Every experience in your life is being orchestrated to teach you something you need to know to move forward.” – Brian Tracy

While not having a job will be a shock, it will also be a teaching moment. This is your chance to see what’s next. Remember that everything in your life is an opportunity to learn and grow.

7. “In times of great stress or adversity, it’s always best to keep busy, to plow your anger and your energy into something positive.” – Lee Iacocca

Being unemployed is sure to cause stress, unfortunately. Instead of giving into that stress, however, you should use that energy to move forward. As Iacocca said, turn it into something positive like learning something new or seeking a new career.

If your unemployment is temporary and you’ll be returning to the same job, then try to focus on something else. Make a list of all the things you wanted to do around your home but never had the time. Put your negative energy into positive tasks and you’ll find yourself feeling a little better.

8. “A smart couple with a healthy financial relationship is always talking about money and how they’re handling it. If there’s a medical emergency or a job loss, talk about it. If there’s a windfall, talk about it. Your financial situation is a constantly changing thing.” – Michelle Singletary

Always talk about the unemployment situation with your partner, if you have one. If you make the financial decisions alone, then spend some time thinking it over.

By talking about it and figuring it out, you’ll be able to get through it without a problem. Since finances are something that often change, it’ll be an opportunity to figure out how to manage unexpected changes.

9. “When you are unemployed, weekends are seven days long.” – Mokokoma Mokhonoana

So, you may not be in the mood to look at the perks of being without a job. You should try, however, because it’ll help you feel better. Remember that your situation is only temporary.

Since it is temporary, enjoy the time you have before you go back to work. Think of all the things you used to wish you had more time for. Get to work on them, and you’ll feel better about your time spent.

10. “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” – Michael Jordan

Sometimes things happen that you didn’t plan for. This is one of those times. You can’t give up. Instead, come up with a plan. Figure out what you can do to get through the situation. There is always an answer.

11. “Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, ‘Certainly I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” –Theodore Roosevelt

When you’re unemployed, accepting a job you never would have before can sometimes be the best idea. It’s never too late to learn something new. Give yourself some credit because you are capable of figuring it out.

This opens many more doors for you. It gives you something to fall back on if the need ever arises again. The more skills you have, the less likely you are to be in this position in the future.

12. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.” – Mark Twain

Take this unemployment opportunity as a time to explore. Think of all of your dreams and see if there are any that you can achieve now that you don’t have your job standing in the way.

You’re treading something new and scary, but you’ll make it. Be confident and give yourself something to be proud of.

13. “It is only in our darkest hours that we may discover the true strength of the brilliant light within ourselves that can never, ever, be dimmed.” – Doe Zantamata

It is during the hard times that you must reflect inward and remember all that you have to offer. Remind yourself of how amazingly unique you are. Use those thoughts to overcome.

14. “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” – Alexander Graham Bell

Try not to linger on the negative feelings of losing your job for too long. Look forward to seeing what new door will open for you. There is something new out there.

15. “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and will always solve the problems of the human race.” – Calvin Coolidge

As long as you are persistent and determined, you’ll be successful in the end. Remember that as you embark on a new journey. You’ll come back strong and more ready than ever.

Outline of Unemployment Essays

  • Unemployment is the mother of countless evils.
  • In Pakistan, we find increasing unemployment in different fields.
  • Overpopulation is a major cause of unemployment.
  • The slow economic and scientific progress is perhaps the greatest cause of unemployment.
  • The defective system of our education is also responsible for this serious problem.
  • To get rid of this problem, we have to develop our economy on modern lines.
  • Rapid industrialization can remove the dark clouds of unemployment.
  • Our government is trying to solve this problem as early as possible.

Unemployment means not having enough jobs to employ the unemployed. Unemployment is the mother of countless evils. It pollutes the society and wrecks the political fabric of the county. It turns the law-abiding and honest men into criminals and dacoits. It is difficult to expect truth, nobility and honesty from a person who cannot have two square meals a day, and who cannot provide a morsel of food or a dose of medicine to his sick wife or ailing children. A long spell of poverty and unemployment is a great menace to the state.

In Pakistan, we find increasing unemployment in different fields. Thousands of B.A’s and M.A’s are idle as they cannot even get the jobs of clerks. There are many causes of large scale unemployment.

First of all, the population of our country and other developing countries is rising fast. It becomes difficult to meet the needs of all the additional population. If the population goes on increasing at the present speed, all efforts of the government to provide employment and food for the public are bound to fail.

The slow economic and scientific progress is perhaps the greatest cause of unemployment. Because of sluggish industrial growth, there are not many large factories and industrial centres where labourers, skilled workers and fresh graduates can get employed.

The defective system of our education is also responsible for this serious problem. We neglect technical education. Our young men do not like physical labour. There are not enough desk jobs available in the country. As a result, unemployment prevails in society. Moreover, the decline of the cottage and small industries are also a cause of unemployment. The increasing demand of goods is also a cause of unemployment. The demand for locally made products has decreased. This thing has created a lot of problems not only for the government but also for the highly skilled artisans.

To get rid of this problem, we have to develop our economy on modern lines. Our agriculture system is backward. We must develop it with new techniques. Besides, we need to develop our cottage industries. These industries need less capital and more manpower.

Rapid industrialization can remove the dark clouds of unemployment. In rural areas, small-scale industries should be set-up.  The government should set up new factories in as many places as possible. Unemployed and skilled workers will be able to get employment in large number.

Our government is trying to solve this problem as early as possible. But in spite of all much more is needed. The concept of education should be changed. Planned limits. The government must create a powerful stimulus for foreign investors. The menace of unemployment cannot be overcome without effective planning. It is only after a long struggle that we can get rid of this evil.

Essay On Unemployment In Pakistan for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation

Unemployment is an economic term which shows an inability to find work for which one is suited by nature or attainments. It is a worldwide problem. Even rich and advanced countries like America, Britain and France suffer from unemployment. Its percentage varies according to the industrial and economic development of a country.

In Pakistan, unemployment is at its highest peak. All professions are over-crowded. A graduate is not welcomed in any office. There is no scope in the professions of medicine, engineering, law and education. Hundreds of qualified youngsters are wandering in search of jobs. Thousands of labourers and workers are jobless in cities and villages.

Unemployment is a social evil. It is a source of discontent, depression and anxiety for the educated as well as the uneducated people. Corruption, crime, unrest, sin and vices of all sorts prevail in a society where people are unemployed. It brings hunger, starvation, and disease. The frustrated youngsters are falling prey to violence, theft, terrorism, drugs-addiction, drug-trafficking and many other heinous crimes.

There are several causes of large-scale unemployment in Pakistan. Some are the following:

  • Our defective education system is responsible for the high rate of unemployment. It only produces young men who hate manual labour. They want to get only some white-collar job. This system does not meet the economic needs of the country.
  • The pace of economic development of the country is very slow. The mills and factories are unable to absorb all the jobless people. Moreover, ill-planned mechanisation and computer technology are also causing unemployment.
  • In our country, a few privileged persons control the whole economy. Most of them are uneducated and unskill. But, the educated young men have neither the capital nor the opportunities to try their luck in business.
  • The rapid growth of population is a major cause of unemployment. The resources of the country are not enough to maintain such a large population. The result is unemployment.

The large-scale unemployment is creating many social, economic, moral political and psychological problems in our society. Therefore, a comprehensive plan is required to combat unemployment. The education system should be reshaped to produce skilled manpower. the government should speed up the pace of economic development. Especially, the fields of energy telecommunication and transportation should be encouraged. The government should introduce self-employment schemes and set up small industries in rural and underdeveloped areas. Moreover, sincere and adequate steps should be taken to overcome the population explosion. The problem of unemployment cannot be eliminated entirely. However, it can be alleviated with devotion, sincerity and wisdom.

3. Easy Essay on Unemployment for Class 10, Class 12, FA, FSC, BA and BSC

A person who does not have work to earn his livelihood is called an unemployed person. Unemployment is a universal problem. Everybody faces it. Even developed countries like Britain and America face it. Unemployment exists at two levels in our country. There are uneducated people who have no source of income in this country. Unemployment also exists among educated people. This is very dangerous in its results.

Thousands of persons holding master’s degrees are out of job. There are numberless doctors, engineers and scientists who have degrees in their hands but they are unemployed. Even people with foreign qualification wander aimlessly in search of jobs. There are many thousands of unemployed labourers farm workers in villages and workers in cities who are daily breadwinners. Sometimes they do not get work for days and weeks together.

The causes of large-scale unemployment are many.

First, our system of education is defective. It does not fulfil our social and economic needs. It aims at producing clerks and peons instead of technicians and skilful workers. It needs scientists, technical hands and skilful workers. Our education produces young graduates who do not like to work with their hands. We must change our education and harness it to the economic needs of the country.

Secondly, our country is not much advanced in the industry. We have a few mills and factories. We cannot absorb jobless people in these factories and mills.

Thirdly, the industry of the country is controlled by a few privileged people. They do not let others share their experience and capital. If they make a little sacrifice, they can raise a network of industries in the country. The educated people have neither the opportunity nor the capital to set up an industry. The industrialists can give an incentive to the educated people to set up new factories and mills.

Fourthly, our population is increasing rapidly It is very difficult to provide jobs to such a large number of people. They go on increasing every year. Our country is underdeveloped and its sources are limited.

Large-scale unemployment has very bad effects on the progress of the country. Unemployed people do not take part in the development of the country. Moreover, the unemployed people in any society suffer from an inferiority complex. They suffer from the agony that they are worthless and good for nothing. Unemployment brings frustration and disappointment among the educated as well as the uneducated people. It brings in its wake hunger, starvation and disease. It produces a feeling of revolt among the unemployed.

Introduction :

Unemployment is the most serious and rising issue in our country.  Unemployment can be defined as a lower rate of opportunities to meet economic needs and livings.  Human living inclines to labor whether it is a manual or mental type of work.  People work to keep balance in society but most of them work for the sake of pleasure.  The term unemployment specifies those eligible persons who are capable of doing something to make their economic situations better but they do not find any opportunity to experience their skills.  When they fail to find any work that meets their eligibility and their requirements transform a skillful being into a meaningless individual.  On the other hand, employment offers skillful citizens to take their part in making a society worth living and to improve its dignity.

Effects of Unemployment:

Unemployment whether temporary or permanent has many diverse effects on the state few of which are demonstrated below:

Unemployment is the mother of countless evils:

Unemployment is the most serious issue which affects almost all parts and tasks of a country.  Like unemployment gives rise to many social evils which make a social and honest man criminal and dacoit.  It pollutes society and wrecks the economy of the country.  Unemployment generates criminals which transform a worth living society into a depressing environment.  It is hard to find truth and honesty in a person who cannot manage two times food in a day.  A wide span of unemployment is a threat to the economy, peace, and image of a country.  This is a menace to the state in which unemployment prevails.

It is quite clear that countries having a good economy and more opportunities for employment for their citizens is most peaceful and developed in the viewpoint of other nations. After a depth study of the theory of the economics of crime one will be able to understand that an increase in unemployment originates from high property crimes.  Jobless individuals engage in wrong and sinful ways of generating income which can be described as robing.  Criminals are often affected by social injuries that persist long even after they heal.

In the context of this scenario, it is important to describe that criminals are not professional dacoits.  It is the economic condition and unemployment which leads them to a depressed life.  One of the bitter realities of our society is that it is divided into three classes:

  • Upper Class
  • Middle Class
  • Lower Class

The upper class comprises of richest families which can manage to buy anything they need.  The middle class has enough money to meet their needs while the lower class is the most unemployed and ignored class in our society.  This divergence in the classes and individuals of the same society leads them to earn more ways of income.  When they do not find a job to meet the standards of the society they start to earn money in wrong ways which originate dacoits and corrupt in the society.  So, this discrimination should be removed to make society worth living and peaceful.

Unemployment roots drug addiction:

Unemployment can be defined as a tumor that roots many diseases.  One of these diseases includes drug addicts.  Unemployment undermines the life organization of a laborer.  An unemployed person faces a depressing outlook.  Due to this disappointed and frustrating situation, most of them become drug addicts just to get rid of social responsibilities.  In this temporary way of forgetting their unbearable worries, they ruin their whole life.  Their families are destroyed.  Most of the case studies have proved that alcohol abuse, smoking, and prescription drug abuse are most common among people who are unemployed.  The stress of unemployment or losing a job can be a driving situation to addiction.

The correlation between unemployment and drug addiction can never be broken and could be considered as a continuous flow.  When an individual owns a family to feed but the being is unable to pay bills and maintain a house could be stressful.  In this attempt of making a balance between living and income people lead to drinking or drug abuse.   In short, unemployment generates drug addiction which in return generates criminals.  So, unemployment is the root of all evils and sins.

Unemployment cause physical and mental agony:

Unemployment initiates physical agony and hardships.  It doesn’t only affect the breadwinner but ruins the whole family.  In addition to mental and physical deprivation, it has diverse effects on the whole family as well.  When the breadwinner loses or fails to find a job then it leads to child labor.  Children mostly drop their studies just to earn living on a half or normal wage.  The woman also suffers and has to do the household responsibilities just in addition to labor.  In this desperation, the whole family has involved not only the provider.

To sum up the discussion it will not be wrong to describe that unemployment cause depression and stress which can in return cause long-term physical and mental damages.   It has been observed that most of the negative consequences on the mental health of a person are the result of distress caused by unemployment or joblessness.

Social disorganizations caused by unemployment:

Long-term unemployment causes social disorganization and if not controlled it leads to way for social disorganization.  Due to joblessness or unemployment, people fail to meet the standards of society and fail to live up to the expectations of family.  Since unemployment causes lowering to standards of living.  During this phase of distress, most people resort to anti-social activities.  This situation provokes them to prey for begging, gambling, drug addiction, and many other socially disregarded activities.

Unemployment causes incalculable financial losses:

Unemployment becomes a reason for economic and financial losses.  Unemployed persons are supposed to be the parasites of society since they owe to a big financial burden.  This happens when the state fails to provide the required jobs to the most skillful members of society.  This failure to provide jobs to willing and the person who has the potential to do work causes inevitable loss to economic productions.  As it is quite clear that if the productions are low then per capita income is also lowered.

Causes of Unemployment:

There are numerous causes of unemployment; the most important causes are described below:

  • Every census data reveals that population is growing rapidly which is the basic cause of unemployment in our country.  Not only in our cities and villages but the population has been growing all over the world for the last twenty-five years.  But Pakistan is mentioned top of the census data.  Every day thousands of new souls appear on the face of earth which needs to be fed.  Poorer also need to earn livings just to feed young ones.  In this way the progress being made every year is consumed by the increasing population.
  • The other mentionable reason for unemployment in our country is flopped and defective system of education.  Even the educated and developed person is unfit for the available opportunities of jobs.  The system of education devised by our government is also proved to be a curse.  This education system only produced clerks and persons for the office works only instead of developing industrialized and skillful persons.  True and real meaning of education is developing an individual completely which is fit for the society and industry as well.  Responsibility of educationists is development of capacity of brain and soul.  Providing education to masses is the responsibility of state.  The current system of education is totally defective and calls of overhauls.
  • The most basic and prominent reason of unemployment in Pakistan is difference between the standards of labor.  There are two basic types of labor which include:
  • Mental labor
  • Manual labor

In these two types, mental labor means to work while sitting in offices and cabins while manual labor can be defined as working in which physical efforts are consumed.  People prefer mental labor over manual labor.  They do not want to do such jobs which are seen to be low than their standards.  For instance, people resist the job of Washman, mason, cook, or any else like that which consumes physical efforts.  There is no doubt that both manual and mental labor have equal importance and can earn a good living.  But people do not want to do such jobs and prefer to fall into poverty.  There is a severe need of understanding that every person cannot get white-collar jobs.

  • Advancement in technology also creates unemployment in a way that increase in mechanization replaced human labor.  Although advancement in technology brought a lot of comforts but they also reduced the demand for labor.

Frictional unemployment is the result of constant changes in the structure of the industry.  Demand is constantly shifting from product to product ignoring the trail of unemployment.  Because of development in technical skills and highly specialized sorts of labor, eligible persons are unable to secure jobs.

Measures to overcome Unemployment:

Both social and economic measures can overcome the increasing rate of unemployment in the country.  It cannot be solved only by the personal efforts of an individual but requires the joint efforts of the government and the public.

Effective economic planning:

The perfect and valuable economic planning is the need for hours.  As our country is rich in mineral and natural resources but they only need to be developed.  Large-scale development and industrialization are required to increase the employment resources in our country.  Agriculture is the backbone of our country and we owe to it all our economic requirements.  So, the modernization of agriculture in scientific ways is sure to reduce unemployment in the country.  Greater attention to agriculture will develop rural areas which will stop migration from rural to urban areas in search of jobs and reduce the burden in cities.

Cottage and agro jobs will provide more opportunities and must be encouraged.  The self-employment plans and releasing loans to jobless people to start their personal businesses proved very helpful in solving the problem of unemployment.

Unemployment allowances:

As discussed above unemployment allowances to unemployed people from the government proved to be helpful for saving people from starvation.  Societies that provide money to their jobless and unemployed masses are proved to be helpful in this problem and such societies are philanthropist societies.  These allowances are helpful in a way because a self-respecting man feels degraded to live on charity and prefers to earn a respectable living with honest toil.

Providing purposeful education:

The current education system must be transformed into a meaningful and purposeful education system.  The technical and skillful education systems must be encouraged.  Vocational and training centers should be developed to produce valuable professionals.

Moreover, we need to follow a family planning system to control overpopulation.  As a result of all these measures for the economic development of the country, the national income of the country will increase along with employment opportunities for a burgeoning unemployed population in the country.

You may add the following quotes as well to make the essay more presentable:

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

Where to go on a first date with the city

Source: Lori/Legion-Media

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

essay unemployment with quotations

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The cultural center of the Far East

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors.

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

essay unemployment with quotations

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River. Take a selfie here with a view of the Amur River at the monument to Count Muravyov-Amursky.

Protests Swell in Russia’s Far East in a Stark New Challenge to Putin

Demonstrations in the city of Khabarovsk drew tens of thousands for the third straight weekend. The anger, fueled by the arrest of a popular governor, has little precedent in modern Russia.

KHABAROVSK, Russia — Watching the passing masses of protesters chanting “Freedom!” and “Putin resign!” while passing drivers honked, applauded and offered high-fives, a sidewalk vendor selling little cucumbers and plastic cups of forest raspberries said she would join in, too, if she did not have to work.

“There will be a revolution,” the vendor, Irina Lukasheva, 56, predicted. “What did our grandfathers fight for? Not for poverty or for the oligarchs sitting over there in the Kremlin.”

The protests in Khabarovsk, a city 4,000 miles east of Moscow, drew tens of thousands of people for a three-mile march through central streets for the third straight week on Saturday . Residents were rallying in support of a popular governor arrested and spirited to Moscow this month — but their remarkable outpouring of anger, which has little precedent in post-Soviet Russia, has emerged as stark testimony to the discontent that President Vladimir V. Putin faces across the country.

Mr. Putin won a tightly scripted referendum less than four weeks ago that rewrote the Constitution to allow him to stay in office until 2036. But the vote, seen as fraudulent by critics and many analysts, provided little but a fig leaf for public disenchantment with corruption, stifled freedoms and stagnant incomes made worse by the pandemic .

“When a person lives not knowing how things are supposed to be, he thinks things are good,” said Artyom Aksyonov, 31, who is in the transportation business and who was handing out water from the trunk of his car to protesters under the baking sun in Lenin Square, on the protest route. “But when you open your eyes to the truth, you realize things were not good. This was all an illusion.”

Across Russia, fear of being detained by the police and the seeming hopelessness of effecting change has largely kept people off the streets. Many Russians also say that whatever Mr. Putin’s faults, the alternative could be worse or lead to greater chaos. For the most part, anti-Kremlin protests have been limited to a few thousand people in Moscow and other big cities, where the authorities usually crack down harshly.

Partly as a result, Mr. Putin remains firmly in control. And independent polling shows he still enjoys a 60 percent approval rating, though the figure has been falling.

But the events in Khabarovsk have shown that the well of discontent is such that minor events can ignite a firestorm. The weekend crowds have been so large that the police have not tried to control them — even though the protesters did not have a permit, let alone a clear leader or organizer.

And with Russians switching en masse from television, which is controlled by the government, to the largely uncensored internet to get their news, the state can easily lose its grip on the narrative.

Khabarovsk, a city of 600,000 close to the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Chinese border, had not seen any protests of much significance since the early 1990s. That changed after July 9, when a SWAT team dragged the governor, Sergei I. Furgal , out of his car and whisked him to Moscow on 15-year-old murder accusations.

Khabarovsk social media forums erupted in indignation over an arrest that looked like a Kremlin move to eliminate a young and well-liked politician who had upset an ally of Mr. Putin in the regional election in 2018.

Tens of thousands spontaneously poured into the streets on July 11 as residents called for protests online, and they re-emerged in greater numbers on July 18. Smaller-scale marches through the city continued daily.

Russian journalists who have been following the protests since the beginning said Saturday’s crowds were the biggest yet. Opposition activists estimated that 50,000 to 100,000 had turned out . City officials said that about 6,500 people had attended , clearly an undercount.

As they have on previous weekends, the protesters gathered in the central Lenin Square by the headquarters of the regional government. They marched down a main street, blocking traffic, and made a three-mile loop through the city center before returning to the square. Police officers walked along casually on the sidewalk, without interfering.

The crowd, some of whom wore face masks stenciled with Mr. Furgal’s name, looked like a cross section of the city, including working-class and middle-class residents, pensioners and young people. The most concrete demand in their chants was that Mr. Furgal face trial in Khabarovsk rather than in Moscow, but they did not shy away from challenging Mr. Putin directly. They shouted “Shame on the Kremlin!”, “Russia, wake up!” and “We are the ones in power!”

Mr. Putin last Monday appointed a 39-year-old politician from outside the region, Mikhail V. Degtyarev, as the acting governor of the Khabarovsk region, angering residents further. Asked whether he would meet with the protesters, Mr. Degtyarev told reporters that he had better things to do than talk to people “screaming outside the windows.”

The Kremlin appears determined to wait the protests out. The regional authorities have warned that they could worsen the spread of the pandemic, announcing on Saturday a sharp rise in coronavirus infections and noting that medical equipment and personnel had arrived from Moscow to aid local hospitals.

One of the protesters, Vadim Serzhantov, a 35-year-old railway company employee, said he had held little interest in politics until recently. The arrest of Mr. Furgal, whom residents praise for populist moves such as cutting back on officials’ perks, was a turning point, Mr. Serzhantov said.

“To be honest, I used to not care at all,” Mr. Serzhantov said. “But this is lawlessness.”
