Guide to the Doctor of Education (EdD) Dissertation
The Doctor of Education (EdD) dissertation is considered a central component of EdD programs. The EdD dissertation is a five-chapter document that investigates an issue in education, reviews the existing literature on this issue, adds additional insight through a qualitative and/or quantitative research study, and proposes one or more solutions. It is considered the culmination of a student’s knowledge of education systems and his or her training in the academic research process. Most EdD programs require students to formally publish their dissertation and/or present their findings to a group of faculty and peers.
The dissertation and dissertation defense are two of the most challenging experiences students will have during their program, but are also two of the most engaging and rewarding from an intellectual perspective. The dissertation allows students to truly apply all the skills and knowledge they have gained during their graduate work to an education issue in which they are invested. Below is a more detailed description of EdD dissertations and the important steps students should take to successfully prepare for, complete, and defend their dissertation.
Doctorate of Education Dissertations
EdD dissertations are students’ opportunity to contribute original research on and insight into an issue in education, such as educational disparities, curriculum development or instruction challenges, school funding problems, college counseling and guidance, job skills development, or standardized testing. For their dissertation, students complete research under the guidance of a research mentor, and receive academic credit for this work. Students typically attend seminars and/or other classes that provide structure around the processes of developing a research question, formulating a research plan, reviewing existing academic literature, and writing about their findings. Many programs require students to present their findings to a committee and/or publish their dissertation in an academic journal.
The Structure of EdD Dissertations
As mentioned previously, dissertations are traditionally divided into five chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, Research Methodology, Results and Analysis, and Discussion and Conclusions. A brief description of each chapter section is below:
- Introduction : The introduction includes background information about the topic of study and its purpose, the significance of the student’s research, and existing literature on the subject. It also provides a summary of the results of one’s study, and their implications.
- Literature Review : This section explains the existing literature on the student’s topic of study, and places the student’s work in the context of existing theoretical frameworks that are relevant to one’s research.
- Research Methodology : This chapter focuses on how the student gathers qualitative and/or quantitative data regarding his or her research query.
- Results and Analysis : This section explains in detail the results of the student’s study, and analyzes it to arrive at actionable conclusions.
- Discussion and Conclusions : This chapter places the student’s findings in the context of the educational system(s) of focus (e.g. private or public education, secondary or post-secondary) to illustrate how the student’s research contributes to the larger understanding of the educational issue at hand. This section also makes recommendations for the application of the student’s findings to real-world education practice as well as further research on the subject.
Dissertations are typically very long, in-depth works. Many dissertations are between 100 and 200 pages in length or longer, and seek to comprehensively investigate a specific issue or problem in education. Due to the intensive nature of dissertation research and writing, students must plan their research query and methodology well in advance, and seek the support of research mentors and other faculty throughout the process.
Overview of the EdD Dissertation Completion Process
In general, students begin thinking about their dissertation topic during the second year of their program. The second year is also when students begin taking courses in research and data analysis. The term prior to the beginning of their independent research, students typically take a dissertation seminar, during which they discuss potential research topics to explore and learn more about the academic research process. During their third year, students delve into independent research, while still receiving guidance from their selected faculty research mentor. Students generally submit several drafts to a dissertation committee for review and revision suggestions before they finalize their paper. Upon the completion of their dissertation, students may be required to publish their writing and/or present on their research.
Below is a general timeline of the dissertation completion process, followed by a description of the eight steps to successfully completing an EdD dissertation. The timeline below should be used for example purposes only, as programs vary in terms of when they have students complete their requisite research courses.
The Steps to Completing an EdD Dissertation
Choose a research topic and review the existing literature.
During their classes, students should take note of the topics within education that interest them and the issues that they have encountered during their work in education that they would like to see resolved. These areas are often rich with potential research questions. Conducting research within these areas of interest by reading academic articles is an important step in finding a potential question or issue in education that merits further investigation. It is important that students select a research question that is specific enough to allow for in-depth research, is not overwhelming, and is engaging enough to students to carry them through over a year of independent research.
After identifying their field of focus and preliminary research query, students must gain a thorough understanding of the existing literature concerning their field, as well as the theoretical frameworks and conceptual models that have shaped current research methodologies. In general, students should start with articles that have been published within the last 3-5 years, and then review less recent studies that are considered flagship works that have shaped the field in important ways. While reading through this research, students should stay organized with their notes, the conclusions they draw from their literature review, and how these conclusions impact their research study, as they will have to write about these topics in their dissertation.
Select a Research Advisor and Committee
One of the most important parts of students’ research process is selecting a dissertation advisor and committee. Students’ dissertation advisors are faculty members within the school’s EdD program who work closely with students to ensure that they select a research question and project that are manageable in scope, meet certain research and writing deadlines, and have the support and mentorship they need to succeed.
The dissertation committee is comprised of a group of faculty members and instructors who are qualified to read through and provide feedback on a student’s dissertation. The chair of the committee is a student’s dissertation advisor, and the student selects other members based off of their work and expertise in their area of research. Many schools have guidelines around the individuals students can select to be a part of their committee. For example, an EdD program may require students to select one more faculty member from within the EdD program (in addition to their faculty advisor), one individual outside of the department who works in a related field, and one subject matter expert from inside or outside the department who can give in-depth advice regarding the student’s research project. Students must obtain approval from their program for their committee member selections.
A student’s dissertation committee not only provides feedback and support on a student’s research, but also serves as a collective evaluator of a student’s research progress and final product. For example, the committee generally sets dissertation chapter completion and submission deadlines to keep students on track, and also listens to and evaluates students’ dissertation defense, which is a requirement for graduation.
Create and Defend Research Proposal
After students receive approval of their dissertation committee, they work individually and with their dissertation chair/advisor to develop a formal research proposal. The proposal typically includes the first three chapters of a student’s dissertation: the Introduction, the Literature Review chapter, and the Research Methodology chapter. In this proposal, students must outline their specific research query and its relevance to and impact on different spheres of education. They must also explain the work that has already been done in their area of research, their methodologies for the study they will conduct, and their tools and plans for analysis.
Once students have written these three chapters and formalized their research proposal, they must meet with their committee to present and defend their research proposal. This defense is meant to identify any issues with a student’s research objective, review of the literature, or study methodology, so that the student can address these issues prior to conducting their research.
Develop a Timeline for Research and Writing
Students work with their dissertation committee to establish timelines for the completion of certain chapters and milestones in their study (e.g. the conducting of surveys or the compilation and analysis of data or records). A reasonable timeline may have students writing the first three chapters during the fall term of their third year, and the fourth and fifth chapters during the spring term of the same year. However, dissertation timelines will vary depending on whether students are pursuing their degree full-time or part-time, how early in their program they are able to take the requisite research courses prior to starting their independent work, how soon they are able to identify a research question, and other factors.
Apply for Institutional Review Board (IRB) Approval
The Institutional Review Board protects the rights and well-being of human subjects of research studies by working to ensure their consent to certain research procedures, and assuring their ethical treatment during the research process. All EdD research projects must receive IRB approval before proceeding. The IRB approval application is generally comprised of any study subject consent forms; copies of any surveys, questionnaires, or other data collection methods and tools to be used; a completed application form; and proof of IRB Training completion. IRB Training is typically completed through an online course module that is delivered through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) program.
Conduct Study and Analyze Results
Once students have received IRB approval, they are ready to proceed with their planned study. Data collection methods vary depending on the nature and scope of one’s research project, but may include sending out surveys, conducting interviews, conducting student or teacher assessments, compiling student performance metrics from public records, and other methods of collecting relevant data to try and answer their research query. Once students have gathered sufficient data, they move to the analysis of this data to try and find trends or patterns that help answer their research question. Throughout this process, students consult with their advisor and with members of their dissertation committee as necessary.
Complete Dissertation and Submit for Review and Revision
Once students have completed their analysis, they must write the Results and Analysis and Discussion and Conclusions sections of their dissertation. The Results and Analysis chapter is a straightforward explanation of one’s study results and the conclusions that can be drawn from them. The Discussion and Conclusions section places the study results in the context of the larger educational issue(s) affected by one’s research, makes recommendations for the application of one’s findings, and also provides suggestions for further research in the area of study. Upon the completion of a full dissertation manuscript, students submit their work to their committee for review and commentary. Students may go through several revisions and then final edits of their dissertation prior to their final defense and formal manuscript submission.
Conduct Dissertation Final Defense
A milestone in the EdD student’s graduate school career is the dissertation final defense, which is a formal presentation that students make to their dissertation committee, in which they explain their research objectives, methodology, and findings. During and after their presentation, committee members ask questions in an effort to identify any weaknesses, inconsistencies, or other issues in the student’s research. When faced with these questions, students must answer clearly and defend the validity of their research methods, results, and conclusions. After the presentation and questions are over, the committee confers to decide whether the student has passed his or her final defense and will receive the doctoral degree.
Before completing their dissertation defense, it is recommended that students prepare well in advance by attending the defenses of other students within the same program and discussing their dissertation manuscript with their advisor and asking any questions regarding what to expect during the defense. Students should craft a strong and well-organized presentation, and also anticipate questions that their committee members may ask them.
Submit Dissertation for Formal Review
The final step students need to take to complete their dissertation is to submit their fully edited manuscript for formal review by their dissertation committee, after making any necessary modifications in response to recommendations given during their dissertation defense. Some programs require students to publish their dissertation in an academic journal, which requires students to format their manuscript according to journal guidelines.

MSc Dissertations in the Education Library
On the open shelves in the Education Library you will find older printed copies of MSc Education, ALSLA and ALLT dissertations. Some years we were able to indicate which dissertations which received distinctions by marking these with a red dot on the spine. Please note that very few dissertations are available from 2020 as the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic meant the requirement for students to submit a hard copy was waived (and only a few students chose to submit online copies to the library). Since 2021 dissertations are primarily submitted online with optional donation of a hard copy to the library shelves. Submission is voluntary so the library does not have every dissertation submitted each year.
MSc dissertations are shelved on the far wall of the Front Reading Room. These are for consultation in the library only and cannot be borrowed.
MSc dissertations are grouped first by course, e.g. ALSLA, Higher Education, and within each course are arranged alphabetically by author’s surname.

A system that works for everyone, important notes:.
As a student of education looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing education theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.
The field of education is vast and interrelated with so many other academic disciplines. That is why creating an education dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.
We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.
This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.
While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best education dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.
Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.
Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Take a look at some of our sample education dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Here are the examples of positive education growth in Port Arthur, local leaders detail
Published 12:20 am Thursday, April 25, 2024
By Mary Meaux
Local leaders shared educational successes from the classroom and beyond during the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce Leadership Luncheon.
Port Arthur Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie shined a light on Lincoln Middle School’s robotics teams that went to Lubbock for competition.
“Our first team came in fifth out of 24 areas across the state of Texas, and our No. 1 team won overall in robotics,” Porterie said as the crowd gathered at Bob Bowers Civic Center erupted in applause.

In addition, a PAISD student earned a highly competitive Gates Scholarship.
The scholarship was formed in 1999 by Bill Gates and Melinda Gates.
“Out of 53,000 applicants, we have one of our students that qualified for Gates,” Porterie said. “And what makes that so unique is they can use that Gates Scholarship from bachelor’s, master’s to doctorate, and it will pay full ride. Everything is paid.”
PAISD’s partnership with Lamar State College for dual enrollment shows that on May 10, approximately 100 CTE level one certifications and associate’s degree students are set graduate from Woodrow Wilson Early College High School.

Autism is something not talked about much, Porterie said, but there is a large number of local students diagnosed with Autism.
April is Autism Awareness Month, and Porterie asked attendees to read up on Autism.
State Rep. Christian Manuel, who was not scheduled to speak at the event, took to the microphone to elaborate on Autism.
“One of the things that is very important and what is weighing down Texas schools is that people that do not have an awareness of Autism and what it is doing to our community and what it is doing to our schools,” Manuel said.
Manuel has a godson who is autistic.
“These children just need a little bit of help,” he said.
Some children who are autistic are hyper technical and can thrive in certain areas, such as computer programming.
An understanding of these students is needed, as some just need a little bit of help in different areas, he added.

Lamar State College Port Arthur President Dr. Betty Reynard noted a major increase in enrollment, construction, programs and partnerships, all in the name of furthering education.
Reynard also gave a glimpse into today and the future.
Enrollment has increased 39 percent on campus, she said, adding there are a number of factors for it.
“Over the last couple of years Representative (Dade) Phelan has worked really hard to reduce our tuition rates on the two-year Lamar campuses in the area,” Reynard said, adding tuition was reduced by 50 percent.
The other contributing factor is the FAST program in which the state pays tuition for students who qualify for free and reduced lunch currently enrolled in state school districts.
There are also some new programs this fall called social media and digital communication and an EMT program.
“Those of you that have driven around on our campus, it looks like a building site because it is a building site,” she joked. “We have a new Allied Health and Science building under construction. It’s a $37.4 million building that will house most of our allied health programs, not quite all of them, and some of our science classes on campus. That is due to be completed March 2025.”
Another project on campus is the rehab of the Monroe Building. The renovation will take at least 18 months to complete.
There are also a few new campus locations, she said.
On Monday she was in East Texas for the ribbon cutting for a nursing program that is going to be offered in Jasper. There are already students enrolled who will no longer have to drive an hour to go to class.
LSCPA is partnering with the other two Lamar two-year campuses to offer classes in Livingston. A local community center is being used to offer training classes.
Monday’s Leadership Luncheon also had speakers Terry Stokes with the Port Arthur Economic Development Corporation, Mark Viator with Sabine Pass Port Authority, Larry Kelley with the Port of Port Arthur, Judith Smith with the City of Port Arthur Health Department, Dashawn Armstrong with Entergy, Claire Jackson with MOTIVA, Monique Thierry with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan.

Orthopaedics Resident Left Soaring Examples in Her Life
Jessica “Jessi” Block, MD, was a beloved member of the Department of Orthopaedics’ residency program, who left an indelible mark on the department and all of her colleagues.
Professional Society Renames Courage Award in Honor of the Late Jessica ‘Jessi’ Block, MD
By Dirk Hoffman
Published April 24, 2024
Courage is often defined as the ability to confront fear, pain or danger with strength, determination and bravery. It involves taking action in the face of adversity, even when one feels afraid or uncertain.
The late Jessica “Jessi” Block, MD, who died last November, exemplified the epitome of courageousness during her lengthy battle with an aggressive form of oral cancer.
Renaming of Award Pays the Ultimate Compliment
A trainee in the orthopaedic surgery residency program at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences , Jessi first noticed a sore on the right side of her tongue in August 2021, but initially attributed it to the stress of applying to fellowships.
But by early 2022, she was having a problem dictating in clinic at Oishei Children’s Hospital and realized for the first time her tongue was deviating to the side. A subsequent biopsy showed a 4 cm mass on her tongue was squamous cell carcinoma.
Over the next year-and-a-half, Jessi underwent several major surgeries and multiple treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, all while continuing her residency training when she was feeling well enough to do so.
Last year, she was awarded the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society’s (RJOS) annual Courage Award and was presented with the award via teleconference on Nov. 26, just four days before she died at the age of 37.
A contingent of members of the Department of Orthopaedics attended the RJOS annual meeting in February in San Francisco, where Jessi’s mother, Sherri Block, accepted the award on her behalf.
The society, whose mission is to promote the professional development of women in orthopaedics throughout all stages of their careers, also announced it has renamed the award as the “Dr. Jessica Block Courage Award” beginning with the 2025 recipient.
‘An Amazingly Selfless Person’
Leslie J. Bisson, MD , June A. and Eugene R. Mindell, MD, Professor and Chair of orthopaedics , says he was impressed with how much Jessi continued to focus on developing into an orthopaedic surgeon after receiving her cancer diagnosis.
“She wanted to keep learning and did not want to interrupt her residency training,” he says. “I told her multiple times that she was inspirational in the way that she was handling her illness. She was just an amazingly selfless person.”
Bisson says Jessi was “an outstanding resident, outstanding surgeon and teacher and made meaningful research contributions.”
“We talk about people at the faculty and attending level as what we would call a ‘triple threat’ — a great clinician, great teacher and a great researcher,” Bisson adds. “But it is hard to find those people. Most of the time people are outstanding at one and good at another one and they do a little bit of the third one. But she was paying attention to it and excelling in all those things in her training.”
Due to Jessi’s illness during her chief residency year, her classmates and colleagues had to go about their daily routines without the full participation of one of their chief residents.
“We depend on our residents. They are an integral part of our clinical tier and part of the educational product that we deliver,” Bisson says. “It was just amazing that everyone just rose to the occasion. A lot of it speaks to the type of person she was. People wanted to step up and do everything they possibly could to help her.”
Had Earned Prestigious Fellowship
Jessi was focused on the subspecialty of arthroplasty and was “incredibly driven and tireless in her work ethic,” says Matthew J. Phillips, MD , clinical assistant professor of orthopaedics, who specializes in hip and knee arthroplasty, and is the director of the Jacobs School’s adult reconstructive surgery fellowship program .
“She was a self-starter in terms of her own education. Sometimes that is a difficult transition for people to make from being a lifetime student to actually directing your own education, which is what you do when you are a resident,” he says. “She was aggressive about learning. She was always prepared for cases.”
Phillips says Jessi took the same approach to everything in her life.
“She was very talented, technically. Some people don’t have as much talent, and they work at it, and they wind up being pretty good. With other people, it seems like it is effortless for them,” he says. “Jessi was a combination of both. She was very good to begin with, but she worked hard to be the best.”
Patients, their families, fellow residents, office staff and the staff on the hospital floors all loved Jessi, Phillips says.
“She had a great bedside manner and always made people feel like they could call her anytime,” he says.
Phillips notes that the orthopaedics specialty is very white male dominated and that Jessi was a great role model and mentor to the students behind her — not just women, but also underrepresented trainees.
Jessi matched to a very competitive and prestigious adult reconstruction arthroplasty fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. It was her first choice and its director, Robert Barrick, MD, is “one of the most recognizable names in arthroplasty in North America,” Phillips says.
“I talked to Dr. Barrick multiple times to let him know where Jessi was at in her treatments and he told me he would keep a spot open for her in the fellowship in perpetuity so that if and when she was well enough to come, she would have a spot. That speaks volumes about what they thought about Jessi.”
Role Model and a Passionate Mentor
Jessi was also an active mentor and was passionate about helping her fellow residents.
“Jessi was a phenomenal mentor. Even after she became too sick to operate, she still was available to us for mentorship advice, to teach, and to offer her insight,” says Ellen E. Lutnick, MD, a PGY-2 trainee in the orthopaedic surgery residency program.
“One memory that comes to mind was her teaching me a maneuver to reduce a difficult hip dislocation before I started my night float rotation — from her couch, while she was still in the midst of her medical treatments.”
“The word that comes to mind is grace ... she somehow managed a litany of setbacks, pain, disappointment, and life-altering circumstances with complete grace,” Lutnick says.
Alexander J. Macfarlane, MD, a PGY-5 orthopaedics resident, says “Jessi was a born leader. She was in a class of her own. I am thankful that she will be remembered and honored by a society that champions excellence in orthopaedics and elevates women in orthopaedics, because Jessi would have no doubt been leading the RJOS or another major society if things would have worked out differently.”
“When I joined the residency program, Jessi was the only other female in the program,” says Lauren M. Harte, MD, a PGY-3 orthopaedics resident. “She quickly became a role model, mentor and good friend of mine. She taught me many tips and tricks for reductions and pushed me to grow as a junior resident.”
“Aside from orthopaedic knowledge and techniques, Jessi was a great friend through the ups and downs of residency. I miss spending time with her in the residency room after a long day ... often looking through pictures of her dogs, Pepper and Sam. It is hard to put into words how special Jessi was.”
“Throughout her battle with cancer, we called Jessi our warrior. She was strong and resilient,” Harte says. “She always had a positive mindset, and you would never hear her complain. We all miss her very much. She will always be our warrior.”
Tammy Smith, training program administrator for orthopaedics residency and fellowship programs, says she grew close to Jessi early on in her residency.
“She was a very special person, and we shared the love of our dogs together. She adored her fur babies, just as I did mine,” she says. “Jessi worked tirelessly to help us recruit more women into our field of orthopaedics. She served as a mentor to female medical students and female residents, and took a lead role in our recruitment efforts.”
Lived Her Life With Perseverance and Grace
Jessi’s mother, Sherri Block, says Jessi was always serving others, so she feels becoming a doctor was a natural progression for her.
She mentored underclass women while she as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan and also participated in “alternative spring breaks.”
“Instead of going to Florida or somewhere warm and having a party, she went to underserved areas. She went twice to New Orleans right after Hurricane Katrina. She went to inner-city Detroit,” Block says.
After graduating, she joined AmeriCorps and accepted an assignment called Operation Safety Net in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“That was a group that would go out at night and provide medical care to the homeless. They worked in the alleys and under the bridges,” Block says.
Jessi then went to work at an orthopaedics clinical practice in Arlington, Virginia, where her interest for the specialty really blossomed.
She later enrolled in a postbaccalaureate program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and after a year was offered a spot in its medical school class.
Block says Jessi was surprised when she matched into the orthopaedics surgery residency at UB because she had not done any of her away rotations there and did not have contacts in Buffalo.
“So, it was a surprise, and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her.”
Block says Jessi often referred to Buffalo as home.
“She called the four guys in her class ‘her smelly, little brothers.’ She truly loved the people she worked with.”
When asked why she felt Jessi pushed so hard to continue her training despite her illness, Block says “she just approached that as something to get done with so she could get on with her life.”
“She approached the cancer with perseverance and grace. That is how she lived,” she adds.
Block says she hopes when people think of Jessi they will remember “that she walked the walk.”
“Jessi loved to teach. She loved to share knowledge with others and encourage others in their life paths. She got excited when others succeeded. It wasn’t a competition with her. She was in competition with herself, but she liked to see everyone win.”

How antiwar student protests are spreading across U.S. universities
The arrest of 100 antiwar protesters at Columbia University on last Thursday sparked a new wave of campus unrest. Demonstrators set up encampments at colleges spanning the nation, with students demanding that their universities cut ties or reveal their involvement with corporations doing business with Israel or profiting off the war in Gaza .
This is how the burgeoning protest movement started, escalated and spread — and where it might go from here. Commencements for the class of 2024 begin in weeks.
An ongoing protest at Columbia
Last Wednesday, protesters set up tents on the South Lawn of Columbia University and flew Palestinian flags. They held demonstrations in which they chanted, banged on noise makers and denounced the “genocide” in Gaza.
But around midafternoon the next day, New York police began breaking up a protest at Columbia, arresting demonstrators who had occupied a campus lawn in support of Palestinians.
This came at the request of Columbia President Minouche Shafik, who had written to the New York Police Department earlier in the day to tell them that protesters had been trespassing on the South Lawn of the university’s Morningside Heights campus and represented “a clear and present danger to the substantial function of the University.”
She requested that the department send officers to campus to remove them. In total, 108 were arrested.
The protest came a day after Shafik testified before Congress, pledging to lawmakers during a hearing on antisemitism to balance students’ safety with their right to free speech.
Shafik told members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce that balancing the free speech rights of those who want to protest with the rights of Jewish students to be free of harassment and discrimination at Columbia has been the central challenge on campus. Her hearing followed one in December in which three other university presidents — from Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and MIT — were scrutinized over their testimony before Congress, during which they declined to say calls for the genocide of Jews would violate campus policies. The leaders of Harvard and Penn later resigned.
After the arrests last week, protesters reconvened on the West Lawn and have been camping there ever since.
Late Tuesday, administrators set a midnight deadline for them to clear out but extended it by 48 hours early Wednesday, citing “important progress” in negotiations with protest organizers.
More student antiwar protests
Starting Monday, protests sprang up at college campuses across the country, including at New York University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the University of Michigan.
At Yale, 47 students were arrested. Officers gave one warning around 6 a.m. and within minutes began arresting protesters who had been camped out on Beinecke Plaza.
Those students were charged, processed and released — and almost all of them reconvened at an off-campus intersection near Beinecke to join hundreds of others to continue their protest as New Haven police blocked the intersection and looked on.
Meanwhile, on Monday night, 120 protesters were arrested at NYU’s campus.
And on the West Coast, students at California State Polytechnic at Humboldt barricaded themselves inside a building, the campus went on lockdown, and administrators eventually closed the campus through Wednesday; the university urged people to stay away from the “dangerous and volatile situation” at the hall and said it was “deeply concerned about the safety of the protesters.”
Where will the antiwar protests go next?
The drumbeat of antiwar protests has not been steady. Tuesday was relatively quiet compared with Monday, but with protests in Texas and California on Wednesday, it’s possible that encampments won’t be leaving college campuses anytime soon. In fact, more could be cropping up.
Columbia’s protests and the ones that followed inspired Merlin Van Alstine, a University of Minnesota student and an organizer with the school’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, and about 30 other students to set up their own encampment. By Tuesday morning, nine of her fellow demonstrators were arrested and charged with trespassing.
Meanwhile, students at the University of California at Berkeley set up an encampment Monday that continued to grow into Tuesday. They hung up a banner spanning building columns that read: “An injury to Gaza is an injury to all.”
The movement also made its way to the District. On Tuesday, hundreds of American University students marched to the president’s office building to demand that the administration divest from Israel.
The protest came a day after the school’s undergraduate senate passed a nonbinding resolution calling for divestment, to which President Sylvia Burwell said in a statement that the resolution “does not represent American University’s position and will not be implemented.”
On Wednesday, protests broke out at Brown University in Rhode Island, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
On Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement officers and protesters clashed during demonstrations at USC.
Also on Wednesday, protesters at the University of Texas at Austin began demonstrating at the behest of the Palestine Solidarity Committee, which had called on students to walk out of class at 11:40 a.m. and occupy the university’s South Lawn. They cited demonstrations at Columbia, Yale and “countless others across the nation” as inspiration.
In the afternoon, Texas state troopers moved in on the demonstration and began arresting protesters who chanted, “The whole world is watching!”

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers
One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.
Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.
Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:
1. An employee is paid a salary,
2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and
3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.
While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.
The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”
The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.
Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.
The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.
Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.
The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.
We urge workers and employers to visit our website to learn more about the final rule.

DESIGN AND AUTONOMOUS TESTING OF A LOWER LIMB PROSTHESIS
Over 150,000 people undergo lower-extremity amputations yearly in the United States. In recent years, multiple efforts have been made to improve the human-robot interaction between amputees and active lower limb prostheses. Using lightweight wearable technologies has been a viable solution to implement algorithms that can estimate gait kinematics and prosthesis users’ intent. Examples of wearable technologies include inertial measurement units, strain gauges, and electromyography sensors. Kinematic and force data is inputted into an Error-State Kalman filter to estimate the inversion-eversion, external-internal, and dorsiflexion-plantarflexion ankle angle. The filter tracked the ankle angle with an accuracy of 0.7724°, 0.8826°, and 1.3520°, respectively. The gait phase was estimated using a linear regression model based on a shank kinematics ground truth pattern with an average normalized accuracy of 97.79 %. A numerical simulation of a gait emulator in the form of a 3-Revolute-Prismatic-Revolute (3-RPR) manipulator. The gait emulator can test lower limb prostheses independent of human subjects, eliminating many hurdles associated with human subject testing. The manipulator was simulated with two control strategies: a traditional PID and a hybrid PID + Active Force Control controller (AFC). The hybrid PID+AFC provided higher accuracy in tracking the desired end-effector trajectory due to improved disturbance rejection. A low-cost surface electromyography (sEMG) platform was developed to robustly acquire sEMG signals, with an overall component cost of 35.06 US$. The sEMG platform integrates directly into a Micro:bit microcontroller through an expansion board. During testing with human subjects, sEMG Micro:bit platform had a reported average signal-to-noise ratio of 24.7 dB.
