Fast food is now universally in most countries and is becoming increasingly popular.

Some feel that this is a positive trend, while others do not.

Model Answer B: Ielts Band 7+

The past 50 years have seen a dramatic increase in the availability of fast food. Some laud its convenience and relatively low cost; however, in this essay I intend to argue that this kind of food is detrimental both to the individuals that consume it and to society at large. There are two primary reasons for this.

First of all, it is an undeniable fact that consuming fast food to excess results in serious health problems. Foods such as fried chicken, hamburgers and chips – which are incredibly high in fat and salt are responsible for such ailments as high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. Moreover, although I certainly agree that fast food is both affordable and convenient, the cost and inconvenience of treating the illnesses it causes in later life are significant. In other words, while fast food is beneficial in the short term, its long-term effects are generally negative.

Further and even more importantly, though, some fast food chains deliberately attempt to attract children in order to shape their future eating habits. One particularly good example of this is the character Ronald McDonald the bright clothes and smile of the McDonalds clown are a beacon to children. Having grown up eating in McDonalds restaurants, people are likely to continue eating there throughout their adult lives. It is also interesting to note that McDonalds provides playgrounds and frequently holds children’s birthday parties in order to attract young children and their parents.

By way of conclusion, I believe that fast food will continue to become more popular as the pace of life increases. Given the health risks associated with this trend, I believe that public education campaigns warning people about the dangers of fast food would be warranted

Band 8 IELTS Writing Task 2 Opinion Essay – Topic: Fast Food

In many countries, traditional foods are being replaced by fast food. This has a negative impact on families, individuals and societies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, the newer generation is more interested in fast food than their native food items. This particular adaptation is not just detrimental (=harmful) for families but individuals and societies as a whole (=in general) . I totally agree with this statement as losing interest in the traditional food may detach them from their culture. In the following paragraphs, I shall explain my point of view.

Undoubtedly, junk foods are regarded as one of the preferred meals of the majority of people. However, this type of diet is least suggested by health advisors and dietitians (an expert on diet and nutrition) . Also, these food products and beverages are liable (=responsible) for a gamut of ( the whole range of thing) emerging diseases, obesity being one of them. For instance, burgers and pizzas have a humongous (huge, enormous) amount of fat. Despite being scrumptious (=delicious) , they can lead to an increase in weight, resulting in (lead to) negative impacts on the health.

Traditional food comprises a balanced amount of vitamins, proteins, and more such essential nutrients, which are essential for us to consume and be active and fit. Thus, these types of food items keep us away from unwanted diseases and help us be more productive while keeping dizziness and lethargy (a lack of energy) at bay (keep sth at bay: to control sth and prevent it from causing you problems) . Not to mention, the spices and other ingredients available in the traditional food contain a variety of medicinal properties that safeguard (=protect) our immune system (the cells and tissues in the body which help protect people/animals against diseases) . For instance, having a glass of milk with turmeric once a day can do wonders (to have a very good effect) for our body.

Wrapping it up, it is evident that our priority should be to stay healthy and active while refraining from (stop from doing sth) indulging in (allow oneself to enjoy the pleasure of)  such activities that may cause trouble and stress. For this specific reason, going with traditional food rather than unhealthy, fast food should be the first priority.

Structure of the Opinion E ssay

• In an opinion essay, you have to decide you agree or disagree with the statement, then you will support your idea in your essay.

• Once you pick a side (agree/disagree), you can start planning your essay and then express your opinion clearly in the introduction.

Fast food is increasingly popular in large cities. compare the advantages and disadvantages of this type of food and give your own opinion. .

Despite many healthy eating campaigns, demand for junk food has skyrocketed in recent years. In this essay, I will explore the advantage that this food is affordable with the disadvantage to consumers’ health. 

To begin, fast food allows people to grab a quick bite to eat without spending too much money. As the world has been hit by inflation and stagnant wage growth over the last year, more and more consumers have been unable to find affordable meals on the go . If someone finds themselves in this situation, fast food can help them to afford to eat. Furthermore, for parents, who are deeply affected by price rises, many fast food restaurants have multi-buy meal deals which are suitable for a whole family and which can help them cope. 

However, regular fast food consumption is damaging for those who eat it. Because these foods are prepared in bulk , they rarely use fresh ingredients and often use additives, which can have a negative impact on people’s health. Furthermore, as the quality of the ingredients cannot be high while keeping prices low, these foods often rely on sugar and fats to make them taste better than they otherwise would. For example, compared to an organic homemade burger, a burger from a fast food chain is likely to be full of chemicals, use poor quality meat and bread, and use more sugar and fat than is necessary.

To conclude, fast food is beneficial as it helps people to eat without breaking the bank . However, it also can be damaging to consumer’s health. For me, given that for many, the alternative to fast food is to not be able to afford to eat, fast food has more advantages than disadvantages.

Essay 1- 

Fast food has steadily become an intrinsic component of our daily lives, and while it keeps attaining popularity, there is a need to review its advantages and disadvantages. 

We cannot deny that fast food ushers in lifestyle ailments and health problems for its consumers and society. Fast food contains lipids in excessive amounts, which are harmful chemical substances that people should ideally stay away from. With the growing consumption of fast food, people keep adding more lipids to their bodies, leading to obesity and a lower inclination towards exercising and physical activities. Eating excessive fast food also increases blood cholesterol levels (bad cholesterol) and causes major ailments like heart disease. 

While it has its clear disadvantages, fast food has still attained more popularity owing to its widespread benefits. In modern times, with hectic schedules to meet, most people lack the time and energy to prepare home-cooked meals. They consume fast food conveniently at competitive prices, offering sufficient nourishment and energy to sustain long working hours. At the same time, fast food has a unique and compelling taste that stimulates food lovers to indulge it. Fast food is also prepared hygienically in most cases while being a blessing for busy working people who barely have time to sit down and eat their meals, let alone prepare them! Studies have also shown that consuming fast food in smaller amounts periodically can boost immunity and enhance the appetite of individuals. Many fast foods also incorporate healthier items, including vegetables, herbs and even salads, which ensure some minerals and vitamins in the daily diet. 

Thus, it can be concluded that fast food has its own set of advantages and disadvantages though the onus to regulate consumption rests with consumers. While fast food offers great taste and convenience, it does bring health issues in the long run. Hence, regulating consumption and adopting a balanced approach is the best solution in this regard. Fast-food consumption has increased exponentially in recent years. Many people encourage fast food consumption, stating that it offers better taste, enhances the appetite, and comes with certain healthy ingredients. At the same time, another cross-section warns of the impending health issues sparked by excessive consumption of fast food, including higher blood cholesterol, obesity, and heart disease. It is important to discuss both arguments objectively to conclude. 

There are numerous advantages of fast food that cannot be ignored. Firstly, fast food can be consumed easily since it is prepared quickly and sold almost everywhere. Secondly, many people do not have sufficient time to prepare meals at home. They depend on readily available and pocket-friendly fast food for their daily dose of energy and nutrition. At the same time, it is not always the case that fast food companies use only unhealthy ingredients. Many fast food items make use of healthy vegetables, organic elements, herbs, and other ingredients at times. Thirdly, fast food consumers vouch for the riot of flavours that enrich their taste buds, thereby increasing their appetite and inculcating a love for food in their minds. 

However, the disadvantages of fast food cannot be ignored. Fast food is often prepared with unhealthy lipids and fats, which we unknowingly keep adding to our bodies. Fast food can make us overweight or obese while leading to issues with blood cholesterol, heart ailments and more. Fast food can sometimes impact the liver as well. It has also led to the slow death of many home-cooked recipes that have been consumed traditionally across households. 

To sum up the argument, fast food has its drawbacks and advantages. The best way out is to consume fast food in limited amounts every month for starters and emphasize on preparing healthy home-cooked meals with fresh ingredients. The Government and other authorities can also consider implementing minimum health standards to make fast food less harmful from a long-term perspective. (320 words)

Essay#60 | Fast food

In many cases, when you give your view in the introduction of an opinion essay, your ideas may be more complicated than ‘I completely agree’ or ‘I completely disagree’. It’s a good idea to learn some phrases to explain your opinion in a more sophisticated way.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

The growth of the fast food industry has, without doubt, impacted the eating habits and the health of many societies around the world. Diabetes, high cholesterol, heart, and respiratory problems are all on the rise due to fatty and sugar-rich food. However, the question is whether a higher tax would improve this situation or not.

From an economic point of view, a higher tax might seem sensible. In countries such as the USA, Australia, and Britain, the healthcare system spends a large part of its budget on people with diet-related health problems. It could be argued that these people have caused their own illnesses because of their choice of food. In this case, why should they expect the state to pay for their treatment? The tax could help fund the healthcare system.

However, we also need to consider which socio-economic group consumes fast food as the main part of their diet. Statistics indicate that lower income groups eat more of this food than wealthier people. One possible reason for this is that fast food is far cheaper than fresh produce. This is because many governments offer large subsidies to farmers who provide products for the fast food industry, such as corn, wheat, and beef. Fruit and vegetables, on the other hand, are not subsidised. Research suggests that many families simply cannot afford to buy healthy food or pay higher taxes on fast food. For them, fast food is not a choice but a necessity.

In conclusion, imposing a higher tax on fast food does not seem to be the answer. If the government chose to do this, it would only lead to greater poverty and families facing further hardship.

Sample Essay 1

Fast food has become a trend in many countries. While the consumption of junk food has increased drastically over the past decades, some believe that it has affected our lifestyle too much. I strongly agree with this statement because, in addition to making us lazy, this type of food causes deadly diseases as it lacks required minimum calories and nutrition.

Excessive dependence of fast food is increasingly making us lazy. Nowadays, people know that they can eat ready food whenever they want, regardless they are in a day out or at home. This mindset keeps them away from preparing food themselves which involves some culinary engagements and physical activities. In fact, running up to food preparation is attached with preparing related ingredients and making all the necessary stuff ready. When we do this, our cramp-prone muscles and the overall body get exposed to the automatic exercises. And more interestingly, as culinary activities are part of our daily life, this physical exercise continues almost daily, and it goes in a well-disciplined manner. Once we switch to fast foods, all these incredible benefits go away, and we are pushed into a perennially sedentary lifestyle.

In addition, fast food is one of the least healthy options for people to eat. The ingredients in this food usually contain empty calories and do not provide adequate nutrition such as minerals and vitamins, which are essential to support everyday metabolism. That is why, this food breeds deadly diseases in human body. In fact, the essences that are used in fast food production and in texture, are mostly well-proven carcinogenic elements resulting in developing fatal diseases like cancers in the long run. To be specific, people who are more dependent on these junk items for their diet usually succumb to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and so on.

To conclude, apart from creating a sedentary lifestyle, relying on fast food has a long-term negative effect because this type of food is usually produced in a way that breeds carcinogenic diseases.

Question: Some believe that it is useful to tell people the bad effects of fast food. Some believe it is not. Discuss both and tell your opinions.

It is argued by some individuals that it is beneficial to inform people about the harmful effects of fast food whilst others are not free with this notion. I opine that highlighting the adverse effects of junk food can raise people's awareness to  make healthier food choices and decrease their intake of fast food.

On the one hand, those who believe that it is useful to educate people about the negative effects of fast food can discourage unhealthy eating habits. For instance,if fast food chains provide calorie counts on their menus, consumers can make informed choices and choose lower calorie options to reduce the risk of health problems like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Therefore, it is beneficial to inform the public about the potential side effects of consuming fast food.

On the other hand, others contend that solely emphasising on the drawbacks of fast food can be counterproductive and may not result in productive outcomes. Fast food is a convenient  and popular option, particularly amongst the working class, who rely on fast food chains like Mcdonalds, Burger King and other food servicing applications that provide  them with instant and affordable  meals. Ultimately, people have the freedom to decide what they eat and society ought not  to dictate their dietary choices.

In my opinion, it is highly important to educate individuals about the potential risks and negative impacts associated with consuming fast foods regularly. Such knowledge can help them make informed decisions about their food preferences  and improve their overall health and well-being.

In conclusion, despite differing views, creating awareness on  fast food's harmful effects is advantageous and I believe it can promote healthier eating and reduce the  health risks associated with fast food.

Fast food has been proven to be the main culprit of obesity and other diet-related diseases, however, the habit of eating an excessive amount of fast food has never lost momentum.  One school of thought holds that education can rectify this situation. However, there is still much scepticism about the effect of education.  In this essay, both of these viewpoints will be analysed.

On the one hand, education can stop people from further damaging their health by consuming fast food. From my perspective, although many eat fast food because of its affordability, the root cause of this lies in the fact that they are not adequately educated about the damaging consequences of junk food consumption, and the benefits of healthy eating. According to recent studies conducted in the neighbourhoods where fast food stores are easily accessible, more than two-quarters of the residents know or care little about what they are consuming and how it can affect their health.

On the other hand, education alone will not work. The fact is that many people who are aware of the consequences of eating junk food are unduly pessimistic. In other words, they are often in denial and convince themselves that unhealthy habits are not as terrible as the media want them to believe. Secondly, it is very difficult for fast food eaters to reduce their dependency on fast food because it contains many addictive artificial flavours.

All things considered, education is one viable solution to put a stop to the obesity epidemic, but it does not suffice.  I feel that more efforts should be made to combat obesity.

In the wake of deteriorating and appalling health conditions of people today, scientists hold unhealthy food as the prime driving force behind it. Some people conjecture that this problem could be contained with proper education, while others don’t believe that could alleviate the issue alone. In this essay, we shall look upon both aspects and how the latter opinion is somehow correct.

The junk food on the platter has been considerably thriving owing to people’s convenience when it comes to having processed food just a doorstep away. A surge in the junk food market and its consumption, as some people say, is due to the oblivion of the generation and society, at large, today. People are ignorant when it comes to the causative, hazardous and catastrophic dynamics of such unhealthy, pernicious and st times, unhygienic food items that may render them frail, severely ill and deficient in the terms of nutrition. Hence, as is proposed by some, the government should take necessary steps in acknowledging and making people aware of such routine and dietary patterns that in the long run, could even be fatal.

However, education and information alone can’t wrap up the wound as people despite knowing the ill effects tend to drag such health sermons at the back seat and hence go by the sporadic sensation of taste. Technology and the modern digital era is most certainly the first and primary cause of it, as now the favourite food is just a “Click & Buy ” away. Not just that, with the upsurge of the digital epoch, the very idea and reflection of it of making the lives easier has indeed, made the lifestyle unhealthier than ever. Sedentary lifestyle, dormant state, frozen feet and barren body are just some of the deleterious physical effects of it, without even getting to the other aspects of it. With a wide plethora of options and alternatives which comes along with the new age, people choose the best ones. Now in order to keep up with the ever-growing demand and neck-jolting strife, the inculcation of the tastier and hazardous sweet poisons to the food material grows. The more people get away with the gustatory aspect of it, the worse they do with their physiologies. In such a case, education alone can’t tackle the demon of junk food, rather limiting and monitoring the advertisements or even precautions while advertising it should be acknowledged. Increasing the taxes on junk foods could yet again be a great alternative as money matters. 

With this we can safely conclude that other than education alone there are some different prophylactic measures that could be taken to halt and digress the fast-moving junk food trend, thereby, saving people from the perils of derelict health.
