13.1 Formatting a Research Paper

Learning objectives.

  • Identify the major components of a research paper written using American Psychological Association (APA) style.
  • Apply general APA style and formatting conventions in a research paper.

In this chapter, you will learn how to use APA style , the documentation and formatting style followed by the American Psychological Association, as well as MLA style , from the Modern Language Association. There are a few major formatting styles used in academic texts, including AMA, Chicago, and Turabian:

  • AMA (American Medical Association) for medicine, health, and biological sciences
  • APA (American Psychological Association) for education, psychology, and the social sciences
  • Chicago—a common style used in everyday publications like magazines, newspapers, and books
  • MLA (Modern Language Association) for English, literature, arts, and humanities
  • Turabian—another common style designed for its universal application across all subjects and disciplines

While all the formatting and citation styles have their own use and applications, in this chapter we focus our attention on the two styles you are most likely to use in your academic studies: APA and MLA.

If you find that the rules of proper source documentation are difficult to keep straight, you are not alone. Writing a good research paper is, in and of itself, a major intellectual challenge. Having to follow detailed citation and formatting guidelines as well may seem like just one more task to add to an already-too-long list of requirements.

Following these guidelines, however, serves several important purposes. First, it signals to your readers that your paper should be taken seriously as a student’s contribution to a given academic or professional field; it is the literary equivalent of wearing a tailored suit to a job interview. Second, it shows that you respect other people’s work enough to give them proper credit for it. Finally, it helps your reader find additional materials if he or she wishes to learn more about your topic.

Furthermore, producing a letter-perfect APA-style paper need not be burdensome. Yes, it requires careful attention to detail. However, you can simplify the process if you keep these broad guidelines in mind:

  • Work ahead whenever you can. Chapter 11 “Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?” includes tips for keeping track of your sources early in the research process, which will save time later on.
  • Get it right the first time. Apply APA guidelines as you write, so you will not have much to correct during the editing stage. Again, putting in a little extra time early on can save time later.
  • Use the resources available to you. In addition to the guidelines provided in this chapter, you may wish to consult the APA website at http://www.apa.org or the Purdue University Online Writing lab at http://owl.english.purdue.edu , which regularly updates its online style guidelines.

General Formatting Guidelines

This chapter provides detailed guidelines for using the citation and formatting conventions developed by the American Psychological Association, or APA. Writers in disciplines as diverse as astrophysics, biology, psychology, and education follow APA style. The major components of a paper written in APA style are listed in the following box.

These are the major components of an APA-style paper:

Body, which includes the following:

  • Headings and, if necessary, subheadings to organize the content
  • In-text citations of research sources
  • References page

All these components must be saved in one document, not as separate documents.

The title page of your paper includes the following information:

  • Title of the paper
  • Author’s name
  • Name of the institution with which the author is affiliated
  • Header at the top of the page with the paper title (in capital letters) and the page number (If the title is lengthy, you may use a shortened form of it in the header.)

List the first three elements in the order given in the previous list, centered about one third of the way down from the top of the page. Use the headers and footers tool of your word-processing program to add the header, with the title text at the left and the page number in the upper-right corner. Your title page should look like the following example.

The next page of your paper provides an abstract , or brief summary of your findings. An abstract does not need to be provided in every paper, but an abstract should be used in papers that include a hypothesis. A good abstract is concise—about one hundred fifty to two hundred fifty words—and is written in an objective, impersonal style. Your writing voice will not be as apparent here as in the body of your paper. When writing the abstract, take a just-the-facts approach, and summarize your research question and your findings in a few sentences.

In Chapter 12 “Writing a Research Paper” , you read a paper written by a student named Jorge, who researched the effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets. Read Jorge’s abstract. Note how it sums up the major ideas in his paper without going into excessive detail.

Beyond the Hype: Abstract

Write an abstract summarizing your paper. Briefly introduce the topic, state your findings, and sum up what conclusions you can draw from your research. Use the word count feature of your word-processing program to make sure your abstract does not exceed one hundred fifty words.

Depending on your field of study, you may sometimes write research papers that present extensive primary research, such as your own experiment or survey. In your abstract, summarize your research question and your findings, and briefly indicate how your study relates to prior research in the field.

Margins, Pagination, and Headings

APA style requirements also address specific formatting concerns, such as margins, pagination, and heading styles, within the body of the paper. Review the following APA guidelines.

Use these general guidelines to format the paper:

  • Set the top, bottom, and side margins of your paper at 1 inch.
  • Use double-spaced text throughout your paper.
  • Use a standard font, such as Times New Roman or Arial, in a legible size (10- to 12-point).
  • Use continuous pagination throughout the paper, including the title page and the references section. Page numbers appear flush right within your header.
  • Section headings and subsection headings within the body of your paper use different types of formatting depending on the level of information you are presenting. Additional details from Jorge’s paper are provided.

Cover Page

Begin formatting the final draft of your paper according to APA guidelines. You may work with an existing document or set up a new document if you choose. Include the following:

  • Your title page
  • The abstract you created in Note 13.8 “Exercise 1”
  • Correct headers and page numbers for your title page and abstract

APA style uses section headings to organize information, making it easy for the reader to follow the writer’s train of thought and to know immediately what major topics are covered. Depending on the length and complexity of the paper, its major sections may also be divided into subsections, sub-subsections, and so on. These smaller sections, in turn, use different heading styles to indicate different levels of information. In essence, you are using headings to create a hierarchy of information.

The following heading styles used in APA formatting are listed in order of greatest to least importance:

  • Section headings use centered, boldface type. Headings use title case, with important words in the heading capitalized.
  • Subsection headings use left-aligned, boldface type. Headings use title case.
  • The third level uses left-aligned, indented, boldface type. Headings use a capital letter only for the first word, and they end in a period.
  • The fourth level follows the same style used for the previous level, but the headings are boldfaced and italicized.
  • The fifth level follows the same style used for the previous level, but the headings are italicized and not boldfaced.

Visually, the hierarchy of information is organized as indicated in Table 13.1 “Section Headings” .

A college research paper may not use all the heading levels shown in Table 13.1 “Section Headings” , but you are likely to encounter them in academic journal articles that use APA style. For a brief paper, you may find that level 1 headings suffice. Longer or more complex papers may need level 2 headings or other lower-level headings to organize information clearly. Use your outline to craft your major section headings and determine whether any subtopics are substantial enough to require additional levels of headings.

Working with the document you developed in Note 13.11 “Exercise 2” , begin setting up the heading structure of the final draft of your research paper according to APA guidelines. Include your title and at least two to three major section headings, and follow the formatting guidelines provided above. If your major sections should be broken into subsections, add those headings as well. Use your outline to help you.

Because Jorge used only level 1 headings, his Exercise 3 would look like the following:

Citation Guidelines

In-text citations.

Throughout the body of your paper, include a citation whenever you quote or paraphrase material from your research sources. As you learned in Chapter 11 “Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?” , the purpose of citations is twofold: to give credit to others for their ideas and to allow your reader to follow up and learn more about the topic if desired. Your in-text citations provide basic information about your source; each source you cite will have a longer entry in the references section that provides more detailed information.

In-text citations must provide the name of the author or authors and the year the source was published. (When a given source does not list an individual author, you may provide the source title or the name of the organization that published the material instead.) When directly quoting a source, it is also required that you include the page number where the quote appears in your citation.

This information may be included within the sentence or in a parenthetical reference at the end of the sentence, as in these examples.

Epstein (2010) points out that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (p. 137).

Here, the writer names the source author when introducing the quote and provides the publication date in parentheses after the author’s name. The page number appears in parentheses after the closing quotation marks and before the period that ends the sentence.

Addiction researchers caution that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (Epstein, 2010, p. 137).

Here, the writer provides a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence that includes the author’s name, the year of publication, and the page number separated by commas. Again, the parenthetical citation is placed after the closing quotation marks and before the period at the end of the sentence.

As noted in the book Junk Food, Junk Science (Epstein, 2010, p. 137), “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive.”

Here, the writer chose to mention the source title in the sentence (an optional piece of information to include) and followed the title with a parenthetical citation. Note that the parenthetical citation is placed before the comma that signals the end of the introductory phrase.

David Epstein’s book Junk Food, Junk Science (2010) pointed out that “junk food cannot be considered addictive in the same way that we think of psychoactive drugs as addictive” (p. 137).

Another variation is to introduce the author and the source title in your sentence and include the publication date and page number in parentheses within the sentence or at the end of the sentence. As long as you have included the essential information, you can choose the option that works best for that particular sentence and source.

Citing a book with a single author is usually a straightforward task. Of course, your research may require that you cite many other types of sources, such as books or articles with more than one author or sources with no individual author listed. You may also need to cite sources available in both print and online and nonprint sources, such as websites and personal interviews. Chapter 13 “APA and MLA Documentation and Formatting” , Section 13.2 “Citing and Referencing Techniques” and Section 13.3 “Creating a References Section” provide extensive guidelines for citing a variety of source types.

Writing at Work

APA is just one of several different styles with its own guidelines for documentation, formatting, and language usage. Depending on your field of interest, you may be exposed to additional styles, such as the following:

  • MLA style. Determined by the Modern Languages Association and used for papers in literature, languages, and other disciplines in the humanities.
  • Chicago style. Outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style and sometimes used for papers in the humanities and the sciences; many professional organizations use this style for publications as well.
  • Associated Press (AP) style. Used by professional journalists.

References List

The brief citations included in the body of your paper correspond to the more detailed citations provided at the end of the paper in the references section. In-text citations provide basic information—the author’s name, the publication date, and the page number if necessary—while the references section provides more extensive bibliographical information. Again, this information allows your reader to follow up on the sources you cited and do additional reading about the topic if desired.

The specific format of entries in the list of references varies slightly for different source types, but the entries generally include the following information:

  • The name(s) of the author(s) or institution that wrote the source
  • The year of publication and, where applicable, the exact date of publication
  • The full title of the source
  • For books, the city of publication
  • For articles or essays, the name of the periodical or book in which the article or essay appears
  • For magazine and journal articles, the volume number, issue number, and pages where the article appears
  • For sources on the web, the URL where the source is located

The references page is double spaced and lists entries in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. If an entry continues for more than one line, the second line and each subsequent line are indented five spaces. Review the following example. In APA style, book and article titles are formatted in sentence case, not title case. Sentence case means that only the first word is capitalized, along with any proper nouns.

Writing research papers does not come naturally to most of us. The typical research paper is a highly codified rhetorical form [ 1 , 2 ]. Knowledge of the rules—some explicit, others implied—goes a long way toward writing a paper that will get accepted in a peer-reviewed journal.

A good research paper addresses a specific research question. The research question—or study objective or main research hypothesis—is the central organizing principle of the paper. Whatever relates to the research question belongs in the paper; the rest doesn’t. This is perhaps obvious when the paper reports on a well planned research project. However, in applied domains such as quality improvement, some papers are written based on projects that were undertaken for operational reasons, and not with the primary aim of producing new knowledge. In such cases, authors should define the main research question a posteriori and design the paper around it.

Generally, only one main research question should be addressed in a paper (secondary but related questions are allowed). If a project allows you to explore several distinct research questions, write several papers. For instance, if you measured the impact of obtaining written consent on patient satisfaction at a specialized clinic using a newly developed questionnaire, you may want to write one paper on the questionnaire development and validation, and another on the impact of the intervention. The idea is not to split results into ‘least publishable units’, a practice that is rightly decried, but rather into ‘optimally publishable units’.

What is a good research question? The key attributes are: (i) specificity; (ii) originality or novelty; and (iii) general relevance to a broad scientific community. The research question should be precise and not merely identify a general area of inquiry. It can often (but not always) be expressed in terms of a possible association between X and Y in a population Z, for example ‘we examined whether providing patients about to be discharged from the hospital with written information about their medications would improve their compliance with the treatment 1 month later’. A study does not necessarily have to break completely new ground, but it should extend previous knowledge in a useful way, or alternatively refute existing knowledge. Finally, the question should be of interest to others who work in the same scientific area. The latter requirement is more challenging for those who work in applied science than for basic scientists. While it may safely be assumed that the human genome is the same worldwide, whether the results of a local quality improvement project have wider relevance requires careful consideration and argument.

Once the research question is clearly defined, writing the paper becomes considerably easier. The paper will ask the question, then answer it. The key to successful scientific writing is getting the structure of the paper right. The basic structure of a typical research paper is the sequence of Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (sometimes abbreviated as IMRAD). Each section addresses a different objective. The authors state: (i) the problem they intend to address—in other terms, the research question—in the Introduction; (ii) what they did to answer the question in the Methods section; (iii) what they observed in the Results section; and (iv) what they think the results mean in the Discussion.

In turn, each basic section addresses several topics, and may be divided into subsections (Table 1 ). In the Introduction, the authors should explain the rationale and background to the study. What is the research question, and why is it important to ask it? While it is neither necessary nor desirable to provide a full-blown review of the literature as a prelude to the study, it is helpful to situate the study within some larger field of enquiry. The research question should always be spelled out, and not merely left for the reader to guess.

Typical structure of a research paper

The Methods section should provide the readers with sufficient detail about the study methods to be able to reproduce the study if so desired. Thus, this section should be specific, concrete, technical, and fairly detailed. The study setting, the sampling strategy used, instruments, data collection methods, and analysis strategies should be described. In the case of qualitative research studies, it is also useful to tell the reader which research tradition the study utilizes and to link the choice of methodological strategies with the research goals [ 3 ].

The Results section is typically fairly straightforward and factual. All results that relate to the research question should be given in detail, including simple counts and percentages. Resist the temptation to demonstrate analytic ability and the richness of the dataset by providing numerous tables of non-essential results.

The Discussion section allows the most freedom. This is why the Discussion is the most difficult to write, and is often the weakest part of a paper. Structured Discussion sections have been proposed by some journal editors [ 4 ]. While strict adherence to such rules may not be necessary, following a plan such as that proposed in Table 1 may help the novice writer stay on track.

References should be used wisely. Key assertions should be referenced, as well as the methods and instruments used. However, unless the paper is a comprehensive review of a topic, there is no need to be exhaustive. Also, references to unpublished work, to documents in the grey literature (technical reports), or to any source that the reader will have difficulty finding or understanding should be avoided.

Having the structure of the paper in place is a good start. However, there are many details that have to be attended to while writing. An obvious recommendation is to read, and follow, the instructions to authors published by the journal (typically found on the journal’s website). Another concerns non-native writers of English: do have a native speaker edit the manuscript. A paper usually goes through several drafts before it is submitted. When revising a paper, it is useful to keep an eye out for the most common mistakes (Table 2 ). If you avoid all those, your paper should be in good shape.

APA (American Psychological Association) Format

Here is a general APA format for a research paper:

  • Title Page: The title page should include the title of your paper, your name, and your institutional affiliation. It should also include a running head, which is a shortened version of the title, and a page number in the upper right-hand corner.
  • Abstract : The abstract is a brief summary of your paper, typically 150-250 words. It should include the purpose of your research, the main findings, and any implications or conclusions that can be drawn.
  • Introduction: The introduction should provide background information on your topic, state the purpose of your research, and present your research question or hypothesis. It should also include a brief literature review that discusses previous research on your topic.
  • Methods: The methods section should describe the procedures you used to collect and analyze your data. It should include information on the participants, the materials and instruments used, and the statistical analyses performed.
  • Results: The results section should present the findings of your research in a clear and concise manner. Use tables and figures to help illustrate your results.
  • Discussion : The discussion section should interpret your results and relate them back to your research question or hypothesis. It should also discuss the implications of your findings and any limitations of your study.
  • References : The references section should include a list of all sources cited in your paper. Follow APA formatting guidelines for your citations and references.

Some additional tips for formatting your APA research paper:

  • Use 12-point Times New Roman font throughout the paper.
  • Double-space all text, including the references.
  • Use 1-inch margins on all sides of the page.
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph by 0.5 inches.
  • Use a hanging indent for the references (the first line should be flush with the left margin, and all subsequent lines should be indented).
  • Number all pages, including the title page and references page, in the upper right-hand corner.

The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health

University of XYZ

This study examines the relationship between social media use and mental health among college students. Data was collected through a survey of 500 students at the University of XYZ. Results suggest that social media use is significantly related to symptoms of depression and anxiety, and that the negative effects of social media are greater among frequent users.

Social media has become an increasingly important aspect of modern life, especially among young adults. While social media can have many positive effects, such as connecting people across distances and sharing information, there is growing concern about its impact on mental health. This study aims to examine the relationship between social media use and mental health among college students.

Participants: Participants were 500 college students at the University of XYZ, recruited through online advertisements and flyers posted on campus. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 25, with a mean age of 20.5 years. The sample was 60% female, 40% male, and 5% identified as non-binary or gender non-conforming.

Data was collected through an online survey administered through Qualtrics. The survey consisted of several measures, including the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for depression symptoms, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for anxiety symptoms, and questions about social media use.

Procedure :

Participants were asked to complete the online survey at their convenience. The survey took approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple regression analysis.

Results indicated that social media use was significantly related to symptoms of depression (r = .32, p < .001) and anxiety (r = .29, p < .001). Regression analysis indicated that frequency of social media use was a significant predictor of both depression symptoms (β = .24, p < .001) and anxiety symptoms (β = .20, p < .001), even when controlling for age, gender, and other relevant factors.

The results of this study suggest that social media use is associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety among college students. The negative effects of social media are greater among frequent users. These findings have important implications for mental health professionals and educators, who should consider addressing the potential negative effects of social media use in their work with young adults.

The title page is the first page of an APA Style paper. There are different guidelines for student and professional papers.

Both versions include the paper title and author’s name and affiliation. The student version includes the course number and name, instructor name, and due date of the assignment. The professional version includes an author note and running head .

The abstract is a 150–250 word summary of your paper. An abstract is usually required in professional papers, but it’s rare to include one in student papers (except for longer texts like theses and dissertations).

The abstract is placed on a separate page after the title page . At the top of the page, write the section label “Abstract” (bold and centered). The contents of the abstract appear directly under the label. Unlike regular paragraphs, the first line is not indented. Abstracts are usually written as a single paragraph without headings or blank lines.

Directly below the abstract, you may list three to five relevant keywords . On a new line, write the label “Keywords:” (italicized and indented), followed by the keywords in lowercase letters, separated by commas.

APA Style does not provide guidelines for formatting the table of contents . It’s also not a required paper element in either professional or student papers. If your instructor wants you to include a table of contents, it’s best to follow the general guidelines.

Write the section label “References” at the top of a new page (bold and centered). Place the reference entries directly under the label in alphabetical order.

Finally, apply a hanging indent , meaning the first line of each reference is left-aligned, and all subsequent lines are indented 0.5 inches.

A research paper is a document that provides a thorough analysis of a topic , usually for an academic institution or professional organization. A research paper may be of any length, but they are typically 2,000–10,000 words. 

Unlike less formal papers, such as articles or essays, empirical evidence and data are key to research papers. In addition to students handing in papers, scientists, attorneys, medical researchers, and independent scholars may need to produce research papers.

People typically write research papers to prove a particular point or make an argument. This could support or disprove a theoretical point, legal case, scientific theory, or an existing piece of research on any topic. 

One of the distinguishing characteristics of research papers is that they contain citations to prior research. Citing sources using the correct format is essential for creating a legitimate research paper.

To write a research paper, you must consider several factors. Fields such as the sciences, humanities, and technical professions have certain criteria for writing research papers. 

You’ll write a research paper using one of several types of formatting. These include APA, MLA, and CMOS styles, which we’ll cover in detail to guide you on citations and other formatting rules.

  • Components of a research paper

Here are the basic steps to writing a quality research paper, assuming you've chosen your topic and considered the requirements of the paper. Depending on the specific conditions of the paper you're writing, you may need the following elements:

Thesis statement

The thesis statement provides a blueprint for the paper. It conveys the theme and purpose of the paper. It also informs you and readers what your paper will argue and the type of research it will contain. As you write the paper, you can refer to the thesis statement to help you decide whether or not to include certain items.

Most research papers require an abstract as well as a thesis. While the thesis is a short (usually a single sentence) summary of the work, an abstract contains more detail. Many papers use the IMRaD structure for the abstract, especially in scientific fields. This consists of four elements:

Introduction : Summarize the purpose of the paper

Methods : Describe the research methods (e.g., collecting data , interviews , field research)

Results: Summarize your conclusions.  

Discussion: Discuss the implications of your research. Mention any significant limitations to your approach and suggest areas for further research.

The thesis and abstract come at the beginning of a paper, but you should write them after completing the paper. This approach ensures a clear idea of your main topic and argument, which can evolve as you write the paper.

Table of contents

Like most nonfiction books, a research paper usually includes a table of contents. 

Tables, charts, and illustrations

If your paper contains multiple tables, charts, illustrations, or other graphics, you can create a list of these. 

Works cited or reference page

This page lists all the works you cited in your paper. For MLA and APA styles, you will use in-text citations in the body of the paper. For Chicago (CMOS) style, you'll use footnotes. 

Bibliography

While you use a reference page to note all cited papers, a bibliography lists all the works you consulted in your research, even if you don't specifically cite them. 

While references are essential, a bibliography is optional but usually advisable to demonstrate the breadth of your research.

Dedication and acknowledgments

You may include a dedication or acknowledgments at the beginning of the paper directly after the title page and before the abstract.

  • Steps for writing a research paper

These are the most critical steps for researching, writing, and formatting a research paper:

Create an outline

The outline is not part of the published paper; it’s for your use. An outline makes it easier to structure the paper, ensuring you include all necessary points and research. 

Here you can list all topics and subtopics that will support your argument. When doing your research, you can refer to the outline to ensure you include everything. 

Gather research

Solid research is the hallmark of a research paper. In addition to accumulating research, you need to present it clearly. However, gathering research is one of the first tasks. If you compile each piece of research correctly, it will be easier to format the paper correctly. You want to avoid having to go back and look up information constantly.

Start by skimming potentially useful sources and putting them aside for later use. Reading each source thoroughly at this stage will be time-consuming and slow your progress. You can thoroughly review the sources to decide what to include and discard later. At this stage, note essential information such as names, dates, page numbers, and website links. Citing sources will be easier when you’ve written all the information down.

Be aware of the quality of your sources. A research paper should reference scholarly, academic, or scientific journals. It’s vital to understand the difference between primary and secondary sources. 

A primary source is an original, firsthand account of a topic. A secondary source is someone else covering the topic, as in a popular article or interview. While you may include secondary sources, your paper should also include primary research . Online research can be convenient, but you need to be extra careful when assessing the quality of your sources.

Write the first draft

Create a first draft where you put together all your research and address the topic described in your thesis and abstract. 

Edit and format the paper

Proofread, edit, and make any necessary adjustments and improvements to the first draft. List your citations as described below. Ensure your thesis and abstract describe your research accurately. 

  • Formatting a research paper: MLA, APA, and CMOS styles

There are several popular formats for research papers: MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association). Certain academic papers use CMOS (Chicago Manual of Style). Other formats may apply to particular fields. 

For example, medical research may use AMA (American Medical Association) formatting and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for particular technical papers. The following are the guidelines and examples of the most popular formats:

The humanities typically use MLA format, including literature, history, and culture. Look over examples of papers created in MLA format . Here are the main rules to keep in mind:

Double-spaced lines.

Indent new paragraphs 1/2 inch.

Title case for headings, where all major words are capitalized, as in "How to Write a Research Paper." 

Use a popular font such as Times New Roman. This applies to all formatting styles.

Use one-inch margins on all sides. 

Number sections of the paper using Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.). 

Use a running head for each page on the upper right-hand corner, which consists of your last name and the page number.

Use an in-text citation within the text, using the author's last name followed by the page number: "Anything worth dying for is certainly worth living for" (Heller 155).  

On the citations page, list the full name, book or periodical, and other information. For MLA, you will not need footnotes, only in-text citations.

List citations in alphabetical order on a separate page at the end of the paper entitled “Works Cited.” 

Continuing with the above example from Heller, the listing would be: Heller, Joseph. Catch-22, Simon & Schuster, 1961.

For a periodical, the format is "Thompson, Hunter S. "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" Scanlon's, June 1970."

Use title case for source titles, as in "On the Origin of Species."

The sciences typically use APA format, including physical sciences such as physics and social sciences such as psychology. Simply Psychology provides examples of APA formatting . The following are the most important rules of the APA format.

Begin the paper with a title page, which is not required for MLA.

Use double-line spacing.

Use a running head for each page in the upper right-hand corner, which consists of the paper's title in capital letters followed by the page number.

The citations page at the end should be titled "References."

In-text citations should include the publication date: (Smith, 1999, p. 50). Note also that there's a "p" for "page," whereas in MLA, you write the page number without a "p."

As with MLA, use title case for headings, as in "Most Popular Treatments for Cognitive Disorders."

Use sentence case for titles of sources, as in "History of the decline and fall of the Roman empire." Note "Roman" starts with a capital because it's a proper noun.  

When citing in-text references, use the author's last name and the first and middle initials. 

Always use the Oxford comma. This comma goes before the words "or" and "and" in a list. For example, "At the store, I bought oranges, paper towels, and pasta."

CMOS formatting

Book publishers and many academic papers use CMOS formatting based on the Chicago Manual of Style. CMOS is also called Turabian, named after Kate L. Turabian, who wrote the first manual for this style. Here are examples of CMOS style formatting and citations.

Include an unnumbered title page.

Place page numbers on the upper right-hand corner of the page. Do not list your name or the paper's title as you would for MLA or APA styles.

Use title case for both headings and sources (same as MLA).

Unlike MLA and APA, the Chicago style uses footnotes for citations. Use a superscript for footnotes: "Smith argues against Jones' theory¹.” Footnotes may appear at the bottom of the page or the end of the document.  

CMOS supports both short notes and full notes. In most cases, you'll use the full note: "Michael Pollan, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (New York: Penguin, 2006), 76." For further references to the same source, use a short note: " Pollan, Omnivore's Dilemma, 45." The requirements of some papers may specify using only short notes for all footnotes.

  • General guidelines for writing and formatting research papers

Keep these guidelines in mind for all types of research papers:

Initial formatting

As you create your first draft, don't worry about formatting. If you try to format it perfectly as you write the paper, it will be difficult to progress and develop a flow of thought. With the first draft, you don't have to be concerned about ordering the sections. You can rearrange headings and sections later. 

Citation tools

Use automation tools for citations . Some useful tools make citations easier by automatically generating a citation list and bibliography. Many work with APA, MLA, and CMOS styles.

Check for plagiarism

Use a plagiarism detector to make sure your paper isn't unintentionally plagiarizing. There are many free and paid plagiarism checkers online, such as Grammarly. 

Proofread your work

Do several rounds of editing and proofreading. Editing is necessary for any type of writing, but you’ll need to revisit several distinct areas with a research paper:

Check for spelling and grammatical errors.

Read the paper to make sure it's well-argued and that you’ve organized it properly. 

Check that you’ve correctly formatted citations. It's easy to make errors, such as incorrect numbering of footnotes (e.g., Chicago style) or forgetting to include a source on your citations page.

WRITING A SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ARTICLE | Format for the paper | Edit your paper! | Useful books | FORMAT FOR THE PAPER Scientific research articles provide a method for scientists to communicate with other scientists about the results of their research. A standard format is used for these articles, in which the author presents the research in an orderly, logical manner. This doesn't necessarily reflect the order in which you did or thought about the work.  This format is: | Title | Authors | Introduction | Materials and Methods | Results (with Tables and Figures ) | Discussion | Acknowledgments | Literature Cited | TITLE Make your title specific enough to describe the contents of the paper, but not so technical that only specialists will understand. The title should be appropriate for the intended audience. The title usually describes the subject matter of the article: Effect of Smoking on Academic Performance" Sometimes a title that summarizes the results is more effective: Students Who Smoke Get Lower Grades" AUTHORS 1. The person who did the work and wrote the paper is generally listed as the first author of a research paper. 2. For published articles, other people who made substantial contributions to the work are also listed as authors. Ask your mentor's permission before including his/her name as co-author. ABSTRACT 1. An abstract, or summary, is published together with a research article, giving the reader a "preview" of what's to come. Such abstracts may also be published separately in bibliographical sources, such as Biologic al Abstracts. They allow other scientists to quickly scan the large scientific literature, and decide which articles they want to read in depth. The abstract should be a little less technical than the article itself; you don't want to dissuade your potent ial audience from reading your paper. 2. Your abstract should be one paragraph, of 100-250 words, which summarizes the purpose, methods, results and conclusions of the paper. 3. It is not easy to include all this information in just a few words. Start by writing a summary that includes whatever you think is important, and then gradually prune it down to size by removing unnecessary words, while still retaini ng the necessary concepts. 3. Don't use abbreviations or citations in the abstract. It should be able to stand alone without any footnotes. INTRODUCTION What question did you ask in your experiment? Why is it interesting? The introduction summarizes the relevant literature so that the reader will understand why you were interested in the question you asked. One to fo ur paragraphs should be enough. End with a sentence explaining the specific question you asked in this experiment. MATERIALS AND METHODS 1. How did you answer this question? There should be enough information here to allow another scientist to repeat your experiment. Look at other papers that have been published in your field to get some idea of what is included in this section. 2. If you had a complicated protocol, it may helpful to include a diagram, table or flowchart to explain the methods you used. 3. Do not put results in this section. You may, however, include preliminary results that were used to design the main experiment that you are reporting on. ("In a preliminary study, I observed the owls for one week, and found that 73 % of their locomotor activity occurred during the night, and so I conducted all subsequent experiments between 11 pm and 6 am.") 4. Mention relevant ethical considerations. If you used human subjects, did they consent to participate. If you used animals, what measures did you take to minimize pain? RESULTS 1. This is where you present the results you've gotten. Use graphs and tables if appropriate, but also summarize your main findings in the text. Do NOT discuss the results or speculate as to why something happened; t hat goes in th e Discussion. 2. You don't necessarily have to include all the data you've gotten during the semester. This isn't a diary. 3. Use appropriate methods of showing data. Don't try to manipulate the data to make it look like you did more than you actually did. "The drug cured 1/3 of the infected mice, another 1/3 were not affected, and the third mouse got away." TABLES AND GRAPHS 1. If you present your data in a table or graph, include a title describing what's in the table ("Enzyme activity at various temperatures", not "My results".) For graphs, you should also label the x and y axes. 2. Don't use a table or graph just to be "fancy". If you can summarize the information in one sentence, then a table or graph is not necessary. DISCUSSION 1. Highlight the most significant results, but don't just repeat what you've written in the Results section. How do these results relate to the original question? Do the data support your hypothesis? Are your results consistent with what other investigators have reported? If your results were unexpected, try to explain why. Is there another way to interpret your results? What further research would be necessary to answer the questions raised by your results? How do y our results fit into the big picture? 2. End with a one-sentence summary of your conclusion, emphasizing why it is relevant. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This section is optional. You can thank those who either helped with the experiments, or made other important contributions, such as discussing the protocol, commenting on the manuscript, or buying you pizza. REFERENCES (LITERATURE CITED) There are several possible ways to organize this section. Here is one commonly used way: 1. In the text, cite the literature in the appropriate places: Scarlet (1990) thought that the gene was present only in yeast, but it has since been identified in the platypus (Indigo and Mauve, 1994) and wombat (Magenta, et al., 1995). 2. In the References section list citations in alphabetical order. Indigo, A. C., and Mauve, B. E. 1994. Queer place for qwerty: gene isolation from the platypus. Science 275, 1213-1214. Magenta, S. Michael Alley, The Craft of Scientific Writing A major part of any writing assignment consists of re-writing. Write accurately Scientific writing must be accurate. Although writing instructors may tell you not to use the same word twice in a sentence, it's okay for scientific writing, which must be accurate. (A student who tried not to repeat the word "hamster" produced this confusing sentence: "When I put the hamster in a cage with the other animals, the little mammals began to play.") Make sure you say what you mean. Instead of: The rats were injected with the drug. (sounds like a syringe was filled with drug and ground-up rats and both were injected together) Write: I injected the drug into the rat.
  • Be careful with commonly confused words:
Temperature has an effect on the reaction. Temperature affects the reaction.
I used solutions in various concentrations. (The solutions were 5 mg/ml, 10 mg/ml, and 15 mg/ml) I used solutions in varying concentrations. (The concentrations I used changed; sometimes they were 5 mg/ml, other times they were 15 mg/ml.)
 Less food (can't count numbers of food) Fewer animals (can count numbers of animals)
A large amount of food (can't count them) A large number of animals (can count them)
The erythrocytes, which are in the blood, contain hemoglobin. The erythrocytes that are in the blood contain hemoglobin. (Wrong. This sentence implies that there are erythrocytes elsewhere that don't contain hemoglobin.)

Write clearly

1. Write at a level that's appropriate for your audience.

"Like a pigeon, something to admire as long as it isn't over your head." Anonymous

 2. Use the active voice. It's clearer and more concise than the passive voice.

 Instead of: An increased appetite was manifested by the rats and an increase in body weight was measured. Write: The rats ate more and gained weight.

 3. Use the first person.

 Instead of: It is thought Write: I think
 Instead of: The samples were analyzed Write: I analyzed the samples

 4. Avoid dangling participles.

 "After incubating at 30 degrees C, we examined the petri plates." (You must've been pretty warm in there.)

  Write succinctly

 1. Use verbs instead of abstract nouns

 Instead of: take into consideration Write: consider

 2. Use strong verbs instead of "to be"

 Instead of: The enzyme was found to be the active agent in catalyzing... Write: The enzyme catalyzed...

 3. Use short words.

Instead of: Write: possess have sufficient enough utilize use demonstrate show assistance help terminate end

4. Use concise terms.

 Instead of: Write: prior to before due to the fact that because in a considerable number of cases often the vast majority of most during the time that when in close proximity to near it has long been known that I'm too lazy to look up the reference

5. Use short sentences. A sentence made of more than 40 words should probably be rewritten as two sentences.

Check your grammar, spelling and punctuation

1. Use a spellchecker, but be aware that they don't catch all mistakes.

 "When we consider the animal as a hole,..." Student's paper

 2. Your spellchecker may not recognize scientific terms. For the correct spelling, try Biotech's Life Science Dictionary or one of the technical dictionaries on the reference shelf in the Biology or Health Sciences libraries.

 3. Don't, use, unnecessary, commas.

 4. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

The development of research questions and the subsequent hypotheses are prerequisites to defining the main research purpose and specific objectives of a study. Consequently, these objectives determine the study design and research outcome. The development of research questions is a process based on knowledge of current trends, cutting-edge studies, and technological advances in the research field. Excellent research questions are focused and require a comprehensive literature search and in-depth understanding of the problem being investigated. Initially, research questions may be written as descriptive questions which could be developed into inferential questions. These questions must be specific and concise to provide a clear foundation for developing hypotheses. Hypotheses are more formal predictions about the research outcomes. These specify the possible results that may or may not be expected regarding the relationship between groups. Thus, research questions and hypotheses clarify the main purpose and specific objectives of the study, which in turn dictate the design of the study, its direction, and outcome. Studies developed from good research questions and hypotheses will have trustworthy outcomes with wide-ranging social and health implications.

INTRODUCTION

Scientific research is usually initiated by posing evidenced-based research questions which are then explicitly restated as hypotheses. 1 , 2 The hypotheses provide directions to guide the study, solutions, explanations, and expected results. 3 , 4 Both research questions and hypotheses are essentially formulated based on conventional theories and real-world processes, which allow the inception of novel studies and the ethical testing of ideas. 5 , 6

It is crucial to have knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research 2 as both types of research involve writing research questions and hypotheses. 7 However, these crucial elements of research are sometimes overlooked; if not overlooked, then framed without the forethought and meticulous attention it needs. Planning and careful consideration are needed when developing quantitative or qualitative research, particularly when conceptualizing research questions and hypotheses. 4

There is a continuing need to support researchers in the creation of innovative research questions and hypotheses, as well as for journal articles that carefully review these elements. 1 When research questions and hypotheses are not carefully thought of, unethical studies and poor outcomes usually ensue. Carefully formulated research questions and hypotheses define well-founded objectives, which in turn determine the appropriate design, course, and outcome of the study. This article then aims to discuss in detail the various aspects of crafting research questions and hypotheses, with the goal of guiding researchers as they develop their own. Examples from the authors and peer-reviewed scientific articles in the healthcare field are provided to illustrate key points.

DEFINITIONS AND RELATIONSHIP OF RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES

A research question is what a study aims to answer after data analysis and interpretation. The answer is written in length in the discussion section of the paper. Thus, the research question gives a preview of the different parts and variables of the study meant to address the problem posed in the research question. 1 An excellent research question clarifies the research writing while facilitating understanding of the research topic, objective, scope, and limitations of the study. 5

On the other hand, a research hypothesis is an educated statement of an expected outcome. This statement is based on background research and current knowledge. 8 , 9 The research hypothesis makes a specific prediction about a new phenomenon 10 or a formal statement on the expected relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable. 3 , 11 It provides a tentative answer to the research question to be tested or explored. 4

Hypotheses employ reasoning to predict a theory-based outcome. 10 These can also be developed from theories by focusing on components of theories that have not yet been observed. 10 The validity of hypotheses is often based on the testability of the prediction made in a reproducible experiment. 8

Conversely, hypotheses can also be rephrased as research questions. Several hypotheses based on existing theories and knowledge may be needed to answer a research question. Developing ethical research questions and hypotheses creates a research design that has logical relationships among variables. These relationships serve as a solid foundation for the conduct of the study. 4 , 11 Haphazardly constructed research questions can result in poorly formulated hypotheses and improper study designs, leading to unreliable results. Thus, the formulations of relevant research questions and verifiable hypotheses are crucial when beginning research. 12

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES

Excellent research questions are specific and focused. These integrate collective data and observations to confirm or refute the subsequent hypotheses. Well-constructed hypotheses are based on previous reports and verify the research context. These are realistic, in-depth, sufficiently complex, and reproducible. More importantly, these hypotheses can be addressed and tested. 13

There are several characteristics of well-developed hypotheses. Good hypotheses are 1) empirically testable 7 , 10 , 11 , 13 ; 2) backed by preliminary evidence 9 ; 3) testable by ethical research 7 , 9 ; 4) based on original ideas 9 ; 5) have evidenced-based logical reasoning 10 ; and 6) can be predicted. 11 Good hypotheses can infer ethical and positive implications, indicating the presence of a relationship or effect relevant to the research theme. 7 , 11 These are initially developed from a general theory and branch into specific hypotheses by deductive reasoning. In the absence of a theory to base the hypotheses, inductive reasoning based on specific observations or findings form more general hypotheses. 10

TYPES OF RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES

Research questions and hypotheses are developed according to the type of research, which can be broadly classified into quantitative and qualitative research. We provide a summary of the types of research questions and hypotheses under quantitative and qualitative research categories in Table 1 .

Research questions in quantitative research

In quantitative research, research questions inquire about the relationships among variables being investigated and are usually framed at the start of the study. These are precise and typically linked to the subject population, dependent and independent variables, and research design. 1 Research questions may also attempt to describe the behavior of a population in relation to one or more variables, or describe the characteristics of variables to be measured ( descriptive research questions ). 1 , 5 , 14 These questions may also aim to discover differences between groups within the context of an outcome variable ( comparative research questions ), 1 , 5 , 14 or elucidate trends and interactions among variables ( relationship research questions ). 1 , 5 We provide examples of descriptive, comparative, and relationship research questions in quantitative research in Table 2 .

Hypotheses in quantitative research

In quantitative research, hypotheses predict the expected relationships among variables. 15 Relationships among variables that can be predicted include 1) between a single dependent variable and a single independent variable ( simple hypothesis ) or 2) between two or more independent and dependent variables ( complex hypothesis ). 4 , 11 Hypotheses may also specify the expected direction to be followed and imply an intellectual commitment to a particular outcome ( directional hypothesis ) 4 . On the other hand, hypotheses may not predict the exact direction and are used in the absence of a theory, or when findings contradict previous studies ( non-directional hypothesis ). 4 In addition, hypotheses can 1) define interdependency between variables ( associative hypothesis ), 4 2) propose an effect on the dependent variable from manipulation of the independent variable ( causal hypothesis ), 4 3) state a negative relationship between two variables ( null hypothesis ), 4 , 11 , 15 4) replace the working hypothesis if rejected ( alternative hypothesis ), 15 explain the relationship of phenomena to possibly generate a theory ( working hypothesis ), 11 5) involve quantifiable variables that can be tested statistically ( statistical hypothesis ), 11 6) or express a relationship whose interlinks can be verified logically ( logical hypothesis ). 11 We provide examples of simple, complex, directional, non-directional, associative, causal, null, alternative, working, statistical, and logical hypotheses in quantitative research, as well as the definition of quantitative hypothesis-testing research in Table 3 .

Research questions in qualitative research

Unlike research questions in quantitative research, research questions in qualitative research are usually continuously reviewed and reformulated. The central question and associated subquestions are stated more than the hypotheses. 15 The central question broadly explores a complex set of factors surrounding the central phenomenon, aiming to present the varied perspectives of participants. 15

There are varied goals for which qualitative research questions are developed. These questions can function in several ways, such as to 1) identify and describe existing conditions ( contextual research question s); 2) describe a phenomenon ( descriptive research questions ); 3) assess the effectiveness of existing methods, protocols, theories, or procedures ( evaluation research questions ); 4) examine a phenomenon or analyze the reasons or relationships between subjects or phenomena ( explanatory research questions ); or 5) focus on unknown aspects of a particular topic ( exploratory research questions ). 5 In addition, some qualitative research questions provide new ideas for the development of theories and actions ( generative research questions ) or advance specific ideologies of a position ( ideological research questions ). 1 Other qualitative research questions may build on a body of existing literature and become working guidelines ( ethnographic research questions ). Research questions may also be broadly stated without specific reference to the existing literature or a typology of questions ( phenomenological research questions ), may be directed towards generating a theory of some process ( grounded theory questions ), or may address a description of the case and the emerging themes ( qualitative case study questions ). 15 We provide examples of contextual, descriptive, evaluation, explanatory, exploratory, generative, ideological, ethnographic, phenomenological, grounded theory, and qualitative case study research questions in qualitative research in Table 4 , and the definition of qualitative hypothesis-generating research in Table 5 .

Qualitative studies usually pose at least one central research question and several subquestions starting with How or What . These research questions use exploratory verbs such as explore or describe . These also focus on one central phenomenon of interest, and may mention the participants and research site. 15

Hypotheses in qualitative research

Hypotheses in qualitative research are stated in the form of a clear statement concerning the problem to be investigated. Unlike in quantitative research where hypotheses are usually developed to be tested, qualitative research can lead to both hypothesis-testing and hypothesis-generating outcomes. 2 When studies require both quantitative and qualitative research questions, this suggests an integrative process between both research methods wherein a single mixed-methods research question can be developed. 1

FRAMEWORKS FOR DEVELOPING RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES

Research questions followed by hypotheses should be developed before the start of the study. 1 , 12 , 14 It is crucial to develop feasible research questions on a topic that is interesting to both the researcher and the scientific community. This can be achieved by a meticulous review of previous and current studies to establish a novel topic. Specific areas are subsequently focused on to generate ethical research questions. The relevance of the research questions is evaluated in terms of clarity of the resulting data, specificity of the methodology, objectivity of the outcome, depth of the research, and impact of the study. 1 , 5 These aspects constitute the FINER criteria (i.e., Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, and Relevant). 1 Clarity and effectiveness are achieved if research questions meet the FINER criteria. In addition to the FINER criteria, Ratan et al. described focus, complexity, novelty, feasibility, and measurability for evaluating the effectiveness of research questions. 14

The PICOT and PEO frameworks are also used when developing research questions. 1 The following elements are addressed in these frameworks, PICOT: P-population/patients/problem, I-intervention or indicator being studied, C-comparison group, O-outcome of interest, and T-timeframe of the study; PEO: P-population being studied, E-exposure to preexisting conditions, and O-outcome of interest. 1 Research questions are also considered good if these meet the “FINERMAPS” framework: Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, Relevant, Manageable, Appropriate, Potential value/publishable, and Systematic. 14

As we indicated earlier, research questions and hypotheses that are not carefully formulated result in unethical studies or poor outcomes. To illustrate this, we provide some examples of ambiguous research question and hypotheses that result in unclear and weak research objectives in quantitative research ( Table 6 ) 16 and qualitative research ( Table 7 ) 17 , and how to transform these ambiguous research question(s) and hypothesis(es) into clear and good statements.

CONSTRUCTING RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES

To construct effective research questions and hypotheses, it is very important to 1) clarify the background and 2) identify the research problem at the outset of the research, within a specific timeframe. 9 Then, 3) review or conduct preliminary research to collect all available knowledge about the possible research questions by studying theories and previous studies. 18 Afterwards, 4) construct research questions to investigate the research problem. Identify variables to be accessed from the research questions 4 and make operational definitions of constructs from the research problem and questions. Thereafter, 5) construct specific deductive or inductive predictions in the form of hypotheses. 4 Finally, 6) state the study aims . This general flow for constructing effective research questions and hypotheses prior to conducting research is shown in Fig. 1 .

Research questions are used more frequently in qualitative research than objectives or hypotheses. 3 These questions seek to discover, understand, explore or describe experiences by asking “What” or “How.” The questions are open-ended to elicit a description rather than to relate variables or compare groups. The questions are continually reviewed, reformulated, and changed during the qualitative study. 3 Research questions are also used more frequently in survey projects than hypotheses in experiments in quantitative research to compare variables and their relationships.

Hypotheses are constructed based on the variables identified and as an if-then statement, following the template, ‘If a specific action is taken, then a certain outcome is expected.’ At this stage, some ideas regarding expectations from the research to be conducted must be drawn. 18 Then, the variables to be manipulated (independent) and influenced (dependent) are defined. 4 Thereafter, the hypothesis is stated and refined, and reproducible data tailored to the hypothesis are identified, collected, and analyzed. 4 The hypotheses must be testable and specific, 18 and should describe the variables and their relationships, the specific group being studied, and the predicted research outcome. 18 Hypotheses construction involves a testable proposition to be deduced from theory, and independent and dependent variables to be separated and measured separately. 3 Therefore, good hypotheses must be based on good research questions constructed at the start of a study or trial. 12

In summary, research questions are constructed after establishing the background of the study. Hypotheses are then developed based on the research questions. Thus, it is crucial to have excellent research questions to generate superior hypotheses. In turn, these would determine the research objectives and the design of the study, and ultimately, the outcome of the research. 12 Algorithms for building research questions and hypotheses are shown in Fig. 2 for quantitative research and in Fig. 3 for qualitative research.

  • “As fever may have benefit in shortening the duration of viral illness, it is plausible to hypothesize that the antipyretic efficacy of ibuprofen may be hindering the benefits of a fever response when taken during the early stages of COVID-19 illness .” 24
  • “In conclusion, it is plausible to hypothesize that the antipyretic efficacy of ibuprofen may be hindering the benefits of a fever response . The difference in perceived safety of these agents in COVID-19 illness could be related to the more potent efficacy to reduce fever with ibuprofen compared to acetaminophen. Compelling data on the benefit of fever warrant further research and review to determine when to treat or withhold ibuprofen for early stage fever for COVID-19 and other related viral illnesses .” 24

Research questions and hypotheses are crucial components to any type of research, whether quantitative or qualitative. These questions should be developed at the very beginning of the study. Excellent research questions lead to superior hypotheses, which, like a compass, set the direction of research, and can often determine the successful conduct of the study. Many research studies have floundered because the development of research questions and subsequent hypotheses was not given the thought and meticulous attention needed. The development of research questions and hypotheses is an iterative process based on extensive knowledge of the literature and insightful grasp of the knowledge gap. Focused, concise, and specific research questions provide a strong foundation for constructing hypotheses which serve as formal predictions about the research outcomes. Research questions and hypotheses are crucial elements of research that should not be overlooked. They should be carefully thought of and constructed when planning research. This avoids unethical studies and poor outcomes by defining well-founded objectives that determine the design, course, and outcome of the study.

What is a research article .

A Research Article is a written document that represents the findings of original and authentic research. It is typically published in a peer-reviewed academic journal and is used to communicate new knowledge and ideas to the research community. Research Articles are often used as a basis for further research and are an essential part of scientific discourse. 

Components of a Research Article 

A Research Article typically consists of the following components: 

  • Abstract – A summary of the research article, including the research question, methodology, results, and conclusion. 
  • Introduction – This is an explanation of the purpose behind conducting the study, and a summary of the methodology adopted for the research. This section serves as the foundation of the research article and provides the reader with a contextual background for understanding the study’s objectives and methodology. It basically outlines the reason for conducting the research and provides a glimpse of the approach that will be used to answer the research question. 
  • Literature Review – This section entails a comprehensive examination of the relevant literature that offers a framework for the research question and presents the existing knowledge on the subject. 
  • Methodology – This section explains the study’s research design, data gathering, and analysis methods.  
  • Results – A description of the findings of the research. 
  • Discussion – An interpretation of the results, including their significance and implications, as well as a discussion of the limitations of the study. 
  • Conclusion – A summary of the research findings, their implications, and recommendations for future research. 

Research Article Format 

A Research Article typically follows a standard format including: 

  • Title : A clear and concise title that accurately reflects the research question. 
  • Authors : A list of authors who contributed to the research. 
  • Affiliations : The institutions or organizations that the authors are affiliated with. 
  • Abstract : A summary of the research article. 
  • Keywords : A list of keywords that describe the research topic. 
  • Introduction : A fine background of the research question and a complete overview of the methodology used. 
  • Literature Review : A review of the relevant literature. 
  • Methodology : A description of the research design, data collection, and analysis methods used. 
  • Results : A description of the findings of the research. 
  • Discussion : An interpretation of the results and their implications, as well as a discussion of the limitations of the study. 
  • Conclusion: A summary of the research findings and recommendations for future research.

Types of Research Articles 

There are several types of research articles including: 

  • Original Research Articles : These are articles that report on original research. 
  • Review articles : These are articles that summarize and synthesize the findings of existing research. 
  • Case studies : These are articles that describe and analyze a specific case or cases. 
  • Short communications : These are brief articles that report on original research. 

Research Article vs Research Paper 

While research articles and Research Papers are often used interchangeably, there are some differences between the two. A research article is typically a formal, peer-reviewed document that presents the findings of original research. A research paper, on the other hand, is a broader term that can refer to any written work that presents the findings of research, including essays, reports, and dissertations. 

Example of a Research Article 

Here is an example of a research article: 

  • Title: The effects of exercise on mental health in older adults.
  • Abstract :  This study investigated the effects of exercise on mental health in older adults. A sample of 100 participants aged 65 and over were randomly assigned to an exercise or control group. The exercise group participated in a 12-week exercise program, while the control group received no intervention. The results showed that the exercise group had significantly lower levels of depression and anxiety compared to the control group. Additionally, the exercise group reported higher levels of well-being and satisfaction with life. These findings suggest that exercise can be an effective intervention for improving mental health in older adults. 
  • Introduction:   Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are common among older adults and can have a significant impact on quality of life. Exercise has been shown to have numerous physical health benefits, but its effects on mental health in older adults are less clear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exercise on mental health outcomes in older adults. 
  • Literature Review:   Previous research has suggested that exercise can improve mental health outcomes in older adults. For example, a study by Mather et al. (2016) found that a 12-week exercise program resulted in significant improvements in depression and anxiety in a sample of older adults. Similarly, a meta-analysis by Smith et al. (2018) found that exercise interventions were associated with improvements in various mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety, in older adults. 
  • Methodology:   A total of 100 participants aged 65 and over were recruited from a community centre and randomly assigned to an exercise or control group. The exercise group participated in a 12-week exercise program consisting of three 60-minute sessions per week. The program included a combination of aerobic and resistance exercises. The control group received no intervention. Both groups completed measures of depression, anxiety, well-being, and satisfaction with life at baseline and at the end of the 12-week period.
  • Results:   The results showed that the exercise group had significantly lower levels of depression and anxiety compared to the control group at the end of the 12-week period. Additionally, the exercise group reported higher levels of well-being and satisfaction with life. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of physical health outcomes.  
  • Discussion:   These findings provide support for the use of exercise as an intervention for improving mental health outcomes in older adults. The results suggest that a 12-week exercise program can lead to significant reductions in depression and anxiety, and improvements in well-being and satisfaction with life. It is important to note, however, that the study had some limitations, including a relatively small sample size and a lack of long-term follow-up. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the potential mechanisms underlying the effects of exercise on mental health in older adults. 

This study provides evidence that exercise can be an effective intervention for improving mental health outcomes in older adults. Given the high prevalence of mental health issues in this population, exercise programs may be an important tool for promoting well-being and improving quality of life. Further research is needed to determine the optimal duration, intensity, and type of exercise for improving mental health outcomes in older adults.

Introduction

Literature reviews offer a critical synthesis of empirical and theoretical literature to assess the strength of evidence, develop guidelines for practice and policymaking, and identify areas for future research. 1 It is often essential and usually the first task in any research endeavour, particularly in masters or doctoral level education. For effective data extraction and rigorous synthesis in reviews, the use of literature summary tables is of utmost importance. A literature summary table provides a synopsis of an included article. It succinctly presents its purpose, methods, findings and other relevant information pertinent to the review. The aim of developing these literature summary tables is to provide the reader with the information at one glance. Since there are multiple types of reviews (eg, systematic, integrative, scoping, critical and mixed methods) with distinct purposes and techniques, 2 there could be various approaches for developing literature summary tables making it a complex task specialty for the novice researchers or reviewers. Here, we offer five tips for authors of the review articles, relevant to all types of reviews, for creating useful and relevant literature summary tables. We also provide examples from our published reviews to illustrate how useful literature summary tables can be developed and what sort of information should be provided.

The provision of information about conceptual and theoretical frameworks and methods is useful for several reasons. First, in quantitative (reviews synthesising the results of quantitative studies) and mixed reviews (reviews synthesising the results of both qualitative and quantitative studies to address a mixed review question), it allows the readers to assess the congruence of the core findings and methods with the adapted framework and tested assumptions. In qualitative reviews (reviews synthesising results of qualitative studies), this information is beneficial for readers to recognise the underlying philosophical and paradigmatic stance of the authors of the included articles. For example, imagine the authors of an article, included in a review, used phenomenological inquiry for their research. In that case, the review authors and the readers of the review need to know what kind of (transcendental or hermeneutic) philosophical stance guided the inquiry. Review authors should, therefore, include the philosophical stance in their literature summary for the particular article. Second, information about frameworks and methods enables review authors and readers to judge the quality of the research, which allows for discerning the strengths and limitations of the article. For example, if authors of an included article intended to develop a new scale and test its psychometric properties. To achieve this aim, they used a convenience sample of 150 participants and performed exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the same sample. Such an approach would indicate a flawed methodology because EFA and CFA should not be conducted on the same sample. The review authors must include this information in their summary table. Omitting this information from a summary could lead to the inclusion of a flawed article in the review, thereby jeopardising the review’s rigour.

Tip 2: include strengths and limitations for each article

Critical appraisal of individual articles included in a review is crucial for increasing the rigour of the review. Despite using various templates for critical appraisal, authors often do not provide detailed information about each reviewed article’s strengths and limitations. Merely noting the quality score based on standardised critical appraisal templates is not adequate because the readers should be able to identify the reasons for assigning a weak or moderate rating. Many recent critical appraisal checklists (eg, Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool) discourage review authors from assigning a quality score and recommend noting the main strengths and limitations of included studies. It is also vital that methodological and conceptual limitations and strengths of the articles included in the review are provided because not all review articles include empirical research papers. Rather some review synthesises the theoretical aspects of articles. Providing information about conceptual limitations is also important for readers to judge the quality of foundations of the research. For example, if you included a mixed-methods study in the review, reporting the methodological and conceptual limitations about ‘integration’ is critical for evaluating the study’s strength. Suppose the authors only collected qualitative and quantitative data and did not state the intent and timing of integration. In that case, the strength of the study is weak. Integration only occurred at the levels of data collection. However, integration may not have occurred at the analysis, interpretation and reporting levels.

Tip 3: write conceptual contribution of each reviewed article

While reading and evaluating review papers, we have observed that many review authors only provide core results of the article included in a review and do not explain the conceptual contribution offered by the included article. We refer to conceptual contribution as a description of how the article’s key results contribute towards the development of potential codes, themes or subthemes, or emerging patterns that are reported as the review findings. For example, the authors of a review article noted that one of the research articles included in their review demonstrated the usefulness of case studies and reflective logs as strategies for fostering compassion in nursing students. The conceptual contribution of this research article could be that experiential learning is one way to teach compassion to nursing students, as supported by case studies and reflective logs. This conceptual contribution of the article should be mentioned in the literature summary table. Delineating each reviewed article’s conceptual contribution is particularly beneficial in qualitative reviews, mixed-methods reviews, and critical reviews that often focus on developing models and describing or explaining various phenomena. Figure 2 offers an example of a literature summary table. 4

Tip 4: compose potential themes from each article during summary writing

While developing literature summary tables, many authors use themes or subthemes reported in the given articles as the key results of their own review. Such an approach prevents the review authors from understanding the article’s conceptual contribution, developing rigorous synthesis and drawing reasonable interpretations of results from an individual article. Ultimately, it affects the generation of novel review findings. For example, one of the articles about women’s healthcare-seeking behaviours in developing countries reported a theme ‘social-cultural determinants of health as precursors of delays’. Instead of using this theme as one of the review findings, the reviewers should read and interpret beyond the given description in an article, compare and contrast themes, findings from one article with findings and themes from another article to find similarities and differences and to understand and explain bigger picture for their readers. Therefore, while developing literature summary tables, think twice before using the predeveloped themes. Including your themes in the summary tables (see figure 1 ) demonstrates to the readers that a robust method of data extraction and synthesis has been followed.

Tip 5: create your personalised template for literature summaries

Often templates are available for data extraction and development of literature summary tables. The available templates may be in the form of a table, chart or a structured framework that extracts some essential information about every article. The commonly used information may include authors, purpose, methods, key results and quality scores. While extracting all relevant information is important, such templates should be tailored to meet the needs of the individuals’ review. For example, for a review about the effectiveness of healthcare interventions, a literature summary table must include information about the intervention, its type, content timing, duration, setting, effectiveness, negative consequences, and receivers and implementers’ experiences of its usage. Similarly, literature summary tables for articles included in a meta-synthesis must include information about the participants’ characteristics, research context and conceptual contribution of each reviewed article so as to help the reader make an informed decision about the usefulness or lack of usefulness of the individual article in the review and the whole review.

In conclusion, narrative or systematic reviews are almost always conducted as a part of any educational project (thesis or dissertation) or academic or clinical research. Literature reviews are the foundation of research on a given topic. Robust and high-quality reviews play an instrumental role in guiding research, practice and policymaking. However, the quality of reviews is also contingent on rigorous data extraction and synthesis, which require developing literature summaries. We have outlined five tips that could enhance the quality of the data extraction and synthesis process by developing useful literature summaries.

Introduction: Fall Risk Appraisal (FRA), a process that integrates perceived and objective fall risk measures, serves as a crucial component for understanding the incongruence between fear of falling (FOF) and physiological fall risk in older adults. Despite its importance, scant research has been undertaken to investigate how habitual physical activity (PA) levels, quantified in Monitor-Independent Movement Summary (MIMS), vary across FRA categories. MIMS is a device-independent acceleration summary metric that helps standardize data analysis across studies by accounting for discrepancies in raw data among research-grade and consumer devices.

Objective: This cross-sectional study explores the associations between MIMS (volume and intensity) and FRA in a sample of older adults in the United States.

Methods: We assessed FOF (Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International), physiological fall risk (balance: BTrackS Balance, leg strength: 30-s sit-to-stand test) and 7-day free-living PA (ActiGraph GT9X) in 178 community-dwelling older adults. PA volume was summarized as average daily MIMS (MIMS/day). PA intensity was calculated as peak 30-min MIMS (average of highest 30 non-consecutive MIMS minutes/day), representing a PA index of higher-intensity epochs. FRA categorized participants into following four groups: Rational (low FOF-low physiological fall risk), Irrational (high FOF-low physiological fall risk), Incongruent (low FOF-high physiological fall risk) and Congruent (high FOF-high physiological fall risk).

Results: Compared to rational group, average MIMS/day and peak 30-min MIMS were, respectively, 15.8% ( p = .025) and 14.0% ( p = .004) lower in irrational group, and 16.6% ( p = .013) and 17.5% ( p < .001) lower in congruent group. No significant differences were detected between incongruent and rational groups. Multiple regression analyses showed that, after adjusting for age, gender, and BMI (reference: rational), only irrational FRA was significantly associated with lower PA volume (β = −1,452.8 MIMS/day, p = .034); whereas irrational and congruent FRAs were significantly associated with lower “peak PA intensity” (irrational: β = −5.40 MIMS/day, p = .007; congruent: β = −5.43 MIMS/day, p = .004).

Conclusion: These findings highlight that FOF is a significant barrier for older adults to participate in high-intensity PA, regardless of their balance and strength. Therefore, PA programs for older adults should develop tailored intervention strategies (cognitive reframing, balance and strength exercises, or both) based on an individual’s FOF and physiological fall risk.

Introduction

In the United States (US), over 14 million adults aged 65 years or older fall each year ( Moreland et al., 2020 ; Kakara et al., 2023 ). According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 20% of falls in older adults cause serious injuries, which results in limited functional mobility, loss of independence, reduced quality of life, and premature death ( Ambrose et al., 2013 ). Fear of falling (FOF) has been recognized as an important psychological aspect associated with falls in older adults ( Jansen et al., 2021 ). However, studies report that many older adults might show a discrepancy between their FOF and physiological fall risk, known as maladaptive fall risk appraisal (FRA) ( Thiamwong et al., 2021a ), and such discrepancies can lead to adverse consequences. For example, individuals with low physiological fall risk but high FOF may overestimate their actual fall risk and restrict their daily activities, which can further lead to physical deconditioning and loss of muscle strength ( Deshpande et al., 2008 ). On the contrary, those with high physiological fall risk but low FOF may underestimate their actual fall risk and engage in unnecessary risky behavior beyond their physical capacity, making them even more vulnerable to falling ( Delbaere et al., 2010 ).

Therefore, FRA combining subjective and objective fall risk measures is important for understanding the discrepancy between FOF and physiological fall risk in older adults to inform more targeted interventions for fall prevention ( Thiamwong et al., 2020a ; Thiamwong et al., 2020b ). FRA is a two-dimensional fall risk assessment matrix that classifies older adults into four groups based on their FOF and physiological fall risk status ( Thiamwong, 2020 ). In FRA matrix, as shown in Figure 1 , two groups have their FOF level aligned with their physiological fall risk status, which are denoted as Rational (low FOF-low physiological fall risk) and Congruent (high FOF-high physiological fall risk). The other two groups show a mismatch between their FOF level and physiological fall risk status and are denoted as Incongruent (low FOF-high physiological fall risk) and Irrational (high FOF-low physiological fall risk).

Prior research has mostly focused on exploring the independent associations of FOF and objective fall risk measures with physical activity (PA) participation in older adults ( Gregg et al., 2000 ; Chan et al., 2007 ; Zijlstra et al., 2007 ; Heesch et al., 2008 ; Mendes da Costa et al., 2012 ). To date, only a small number of studies have investigated the combined effects of FOF and objective fall risk on PA engagement. For example, one study examined the joint associations of FOF and objective fall risk with everyday walking activities in older adults. This study used a four-group categorization from ( Delbaere et al., 2010 ), and found that the number of steps/day in their study sample was in accordance with objective fall risk rather than FOF ( Jansen et al., 2021 ). Another study examined accelerometry-based PA levels between FRA categories using the intensity cut-point approach and found that participants with high FOF accumulated significantly less time in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) compared to those with rational FRA, regardless of their balance performance ( Thiamwong et al., 2023 ). However, there exists a lack of evidence on how habitual PA levels, expressed in Monitor-Independent Movement Summary (MIMS) units, differ between FRA categories in older adults.

MIMS is used to summarize the acceleration measurements obtained on the x-, y-, and z-axes of wrist-worn activity monitors. This PA metric was first introduced in 2019 to summarize participant-level PA data for the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 cycles of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) ( John et al., 2019 ). The major benefit of using MIMS is that it is generated by a nonproprietary device–independent universal algorithm, allowing us to compare the total movement across studies regardless of the heterogeneity introduced by different brands, models and device types (such as consumer vs. research-grade) ( John et al., 2019 ). Similar to other traditional PA metrics such as steps/day or daily activity counts, PA volume can be expressed as daily MIMS (i.e., total MIMS unit accumulated per day) across valid days of assessment, where larger MIMS/day indicates higher daily PA volume ( Wolff-Hughes et al., 2014 ).

Traditionally, quantification of accelerometer-measured PA intensity has been predominantly based on minutes/day (or minutes/week) spent in MVPA, using either manufacturer-specific or device-specific cut points corresponding with ≥3 Metabolic Equivalents of Task (METs) ( Troiano et al., 2008 ). Recently, to establish an intensity-based expression for MIMS units, the concept of peak 30-min MIMS has been introduced ( Zheng et al., 2023 ). It is analogous to the concept of peak 30-min cadence, i.e., the average of 30 highest cadence (steps/minutes) values within a day, representing an individual’s best efforts ( Tudor-Locke et al., 2012 ). Similar to cadence (steps/minutes), MIMS/minutes values were shown to have a strong correlation with higher PA intensity ( John et al., 2019 ). Therefore, peak 30-min MIMS (i.e., the average of the highest 30 non-consecutive MIMS [minutes/day] values within a day) can be used as a measure of higher-intensity epochs across the PA monitoring period ( Zheng et al., 2023 ). Evaluating daily MIMS (volume) and peak 30-min MIMS (intensity) can facilitate a more comprehensive assessment of PA and its relationship with FRA.

Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the associations between wrist-worn accelerometer-measured PA (expressed as daily MIMS and peak 30-min MIMS) and FRA in a sample of community-dwelling older adults. We are particularly interested in the question: “Which of the maladaptive FRA groups, i.e., Incongruent (low FOF-high physiological fall risk) and Irrational (high FOF-low physiological fall risk), differ more from the Rational (low FOF-low physiological fall risk) group in terms of habitual PA level?.” This will allow us to understand which of the two factors—FOF or physiological fall risk—has a stronger relationship with reduced PA participation among older adults.

Materials and methods

Study design and participants.

In this cross-sectional study, purposive sampling was used to recruit 178 community-dwelling older adults from the region of Central Florida, United States, between February 2021 and March 2023. The inclusion criteria were: i) 60 years of age or older; ii) being able to walk with or without an assistive device (but without the assistance of another person); iii) no marked cognitive impairment [i.e., Memory Impairment Screen score ≥5 ( Buschke et al., 1999 )], iv) fluency in English or Spanish, and v) living in their own homes or apartments. The exclusion criteria were: i) medical conditions that prevent PA engagement (e.g., shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, dizziness, or unusual fatigue at light exertion), ii) unable to stand on the balance plate, iii) currently receiving treatment from a rehabilitation facility, and iv) having medical implants (e.g., pacemakers). This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Central Florida (Protocol No: 2189; 10 September 2020). All subjects provided written informed consent to participate. This cross-sectional assessment required one visit to the study site during which participants completed a demographic survey and anthropometric measurements, followed by assessments of FOF and physiological fall risk. At the end of the visit, each participant was fitted with a wrist-worn accelerometer for 7-day PA monitoring in free-living conditions.

Measurements

Fear of falling (fof).

FOF was assessed using the Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) questionnaire ( Yardley et al., 2005 ; Kempen et al., 2008 ). It is a 7-item, self-administered tool that uses a 4-point Likert scale to measure the level of concern about falling while performing seven activities (1 = not at all concerned to 4 = very concerned). The total scores ranged from 7 to 28. Short FES-I scores of 7–10 indicated low FOF, while scores of 11–28 indicated high FOF.

Physiological fall risk

Physiological fall risk was assessed using balance test and lower limb strength assessment. BTrackS Balance System (Balance Tracking Systems, San Diego, CA, United States) was used to measure static balance. This system includes a portable BTrackS Balance Plate and BTrackS Assess Balance Software running on a computer. It has shown high test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC = 0.83) and excellent validity (Pearson’s product-moment correlations, r > 0.90) in evaluating static balance ( Levy et al., 2018 ). The test protocol included four trials (each trial taking 20 s) with less than 10 s of inter-trial delays. During the trials, participants were asked to stand still on the BTrackS Balance Plate with their eyes closed, hands on their hips, and feet placed shoulder-width apart. BTrackS balance plate is an FDA-registered, lightweight force plate that measures center of pressure (COP) excursions during the static stance. The first trial was done for familiarization only. Results from the remaining three trials were used to calculate the average COP path length (in cm) across trials. COP path length is considered as a proxy measure for postural sway magnitude; thus, the larger the COP path length, the greater the postural sway is ( Goble et al., 2017 ). COP path length of 0–30  cm was used to indicate normal balance, while ≥31  cm indicated poor balance ( Thiamwong et al., 2021b ).

Lower limb strength was assessed using the 30-s sit-to-stand (STS) test, in accordance with the established protocol ( Yee et al., 2021 ; Choudhury et al., 2023 ). Participants were instructed to keep their arms folded across their chest, rise from a seated position on a chair to a standing posture and return to the sitting position as many times as possible within 30 s. The number of chair stands completed was counted and recorded. If a participant used his/her arms to stand, the test was stopped, and the score was recorded as zero. Age- and gender-specific STS normative scores were used as cut-offs to classify participants into below-average and average STS scores, as shown in Table 1 ( Rikli and Jones, 1999 ). A below-average STS score was indicative of a higher risk of fall. Meeting both normal balance and average STS score criteria was defined as low physiological fall risk, while not meeting either or both criteria was defined as high physiological fall risk.

Fall risk appraisal (FRA) matrix

The FRA matrix was obtained using a combination of FOF and physiological fall risk status. Participants were grouped into the following four categories based on their FOF and physiological fall risk according to existing literature ( Thiamwong et al., 2020a ): i) Rational (low FOF-low physiological fall risk), ii) Irrational (high FOF-low physiological fall risk), iii) Incongruent (low FOF-high physiological fall risk), and iv) Congruent (high FOF-high physiological fall risk).

Physical activity (PA)

PA was assessed using ActiGraph GT9X Link (ActiGraph LLC., Pensacola, FL, United States), which contains a triaxial accelerometer with a dynamic range of ±8 gravitational units (g). The device was initialized to record acceleration data at 30  Hz sampling frequency. Participants wore the ActiGraph on their non-dominant wrists for seven consecutive days in free-living conditions. They were given instructions to wear it during waking hours and remove it only during sleeping, showering, swimming and medical imaging tests. After 7-day of PA monitoring, ActiGraph devices were collected from participants. Participants with ≥4 valid days were included in the analysis, and a day was considered valid if participants wore the device for at least 14 h or more ( Choudhury et al., 2023 ).

Raw acceleration data were downloaded as “.csv” files using ActiLife software v6.13.4 (ActiGraph LLC, Pensacola, FL, United States) and converted into MIMS units using MIMSunit package ( John et al., 2019 ) in R statistical software (R Core Team, Vienna, Austria). The data processing steps included: i) interpolating data to a consistent sampling rate (i.e., 100  Hz ) to account for inter-device variability in sampling rate, ii) extrapolating data to extend maxed-out signals to account for inter-device variability in dynamic range, iii) band-pass filtering to remove artifacts from acceleration signals that do not pertain to voluntary human movement, and iv) aggregation of processed signals from each axis into a sum of MIMS-units that represents the total amount of movement activity [details on MIMS-unit algorithm are published elsewhere ( John et al., 2019 )].

PA volume, denoted by daily MIMS (MIMS/day), was calculated by summing up all triaxial MIMS/minutes accumulated throughout a day and averaged across all valid days. PA intensity, expressed as peak 30-min MIMS, was obtained by (a) first rank ordering a participant’s triaxial MIMS/minutes values within each valid day, (b) calculating the average of the highest 30 MIMS/minutes values within each day, and (c) finally taking the average of the resulting MIMS/minutes values across all valid wear days.

Anthropometric measurements

Height (in cm) was measured using a stadiometer. Body mass (in kilograms) was measured using a digital scale with no shoes. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as the weight (kg) divided by the square of height (m 2 ).

Statistical analyses

All statistical analyses were performed in R statistical software (version 4.1.2, R Core Team, Vienna, Austria) with statistical significance level set at .05. Descriptive characteristics of participants were summarized as mean (standard deviation, SD) for normally distributed continuous variables, as median (Interquartile Range, IQR) for non-normally distributed continuous variables, and as frequency (percentage) for categorical variables, stratified by FRA categories. The Shapiro-Wilk test was performed to check if a continuous variable followed a normal distribution. Differences across groups were examined using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for normally distributed data and Kruskal–Wallis test for non-normally distributed data, with Bonferroni adjustment for post hoc comparisons.

Multiple linear regression was conducted for each outcome variable (i.e., daily MIMS and peak 30-min MIMS) using the four FRA groups—“Rational,” “Irrational,” “Incongruent” and “Congruent”—as explanatory variables, controlled by age, gender and BMI. A priori sample size calculation for multiple linear regression revealed that the minimum number of samples for 8 explanatory variables at a statistical power level of 0.8, α = 0.05, and a medium effect size (Cohen f 2 = 0.15) would be 108; therefore, our sample size (i.e., N = 178) had sufficient statistical power for multiple regression. The rational group (i.e., low FOF-low physiological fall risk) was selected as the reference group in the regression analysis.

Among 178 participants, 163 samples were included in the analyses, after retaining only those who had at least 4 days of valid PA data and completed both FOF and physiological fall risk assessments. The mean (SD) age of participants was 75.3 (7.1) years, and 73.6% of participants were in 60–79 years of age group ( n = 120) and 26.4% were above 80 years of age ( n = 43). Figure 2 shows the scatterplot of participants’ age (years) and FOF scores, stratified by physiological fall risk status. The proportion of participants with low FOF was 71.7% ( n = 86) in the 60–79 years of age group and 48.8% ( n = 21) in the ≥80 years of age group. The median (IQR) BMI of participants was 26.6 (6.3) kg/m 2 and majority of participants were female (79.1%). The median (IQR) Short FES-I score was 9 (5) and 34.4% of participants had high FOF. The median (IQR) COP path length was 27 (15) cm , and the median (IQR) sit-to-stand score was 13 (6) reps. 38.0% of participants had poor balance, 27.0% had below average lower limb strength, and 48.5% showed both poor balance and below average lower limb strength. Finally, 37.4% of participants were screened as rational ( n = 61), 14.2% were irrational ( n = 23), 28.2% were incongruent ( n = 46) and 20.2% were congruent ( n = 37). Table 2 summarizes the characteristics of study participants according to FRA categories.

In Figure 3A , the variations in average MIMS (MIMS/hours) over 24-h by FRA categories are shown. The average MIMS across all groups was in general low at night, then substantially increased during morning hours and gradually decreased as the day progressed and evening approached. In Figure 3B , the mean (line) and standard error (shaded area) of MIMS/hours for each FRA group is shown. Overall, rational group showed the highest average MIMS/hours across the day hours, while congruent had the lowest average MIMS/hours. Among maladaptive FRA groups, the peak was higher in incongruent group than their irrational counterparts, which indicates the potential role of FOF in limiting high-intensity PA participation.

The mean (SD) age in congruent group was 78.8 (7.6) years, which was higher than both rational (74.3 [5.8] years, p = .005) and incongruent (74.3 [7.0] years, p = .010) groups, as shown in Supplementary Figure S1 . This suggests that prevalence of high FOF, irrespective of balance performance and lower limb strength, may increase with advanced age. Also, the median (IQR) BMI in congruent group (28.9 [5.8]) kg/m 2 ) was higher in comparison to rational (24.9 [6.4] kg/m 2 , p = .001) and incongruent (26.9 [4.7] kg/m 2 , p = .018) groups (shown in Supplementary Figure S2 ), indicating that higher BMI in older adults may result in high FOF. However, no significant group differences were observed between rational and irrational groups in terms of age and BMI.

The mean (SD) daily MIMS in rational group was 10,408 (2,439) MIMS/day, which was 15.8% higher than irrational ( p = .025) and 16.6% higher than congruent ( p = .013) groups, as shown in Figure 4 . Also, the mean (SD) peak 30-min MIMS in rational group was 39.9 (8.3) MIMS/day, which was 14.0% higher than irrational ( p = .004) and 17.5% higher than congruent ( p < .001) groups ( Figure 5 ). Compared to rational group, incongruent participants showed no significant differences in PA volume and intensity, despite having poor balance and below average lower limb strength.

Table 2 presents the regression models for daily MIMS. In comparison to reference group (i.e., rational), lower PA volume was associated with irrational ( β [SE] = −1,463.2 [687.7] MIMS/day, p = .035) and congruent ( β [SE] = −1,579.5 [582.9] MIMS/day, p = .007) FRAs in Model 1 (unadjusted). In model 2, after adjusting for age, gender and BMI, only irrational FRA was significantly associated with lower PA volume ( β [SE] = −1,476.41 [582.26] MIMS/day, p = .025; regression coefficients of covariates are presented in Supplementary Table S1 ).

Results for regression analysis for peak 30-min MIMS are presented in Table 3 . In model 1 (unadjusted), lower ‘peak PA intensity’ was associated with irrational ( β [SE] = −5.63 [1.99] MIMS/day, p = .005) and congruent FRAs ( β [SE] = −7.06 [1.76] MIMS/day, p < .001) compared to the reference group. In Model 2 ( Table 4 ), after adjusting for age, gender and BMI, both irrational and congruent FRAs were still significantly associated with lower “peak PA intensity”(irrational: β [SE] = −5.40 [1.97] MIMS/day, p = .007; congruent: β [SE] = −5.43 [1.86] MIMS/day, p = .004; regression coefficients of covariates are presented in Supplementary Table S2 ).

This is the first study, to our knowledge, to evaluate the associations of FRA with daily MIMS and peak 30-min MIMS in a sample of community-dwelling US older adults. In general, both the volume and intensity of PA were highest in the rational group and lowest in the congruent group. In maladaptive FRA groups, high FOF (i.e., irrational FRA) was associated with lower PA volume and intensity compared to the reference group (i.e., rational FRA), but no significant differences were observed for high physiological fall risk (i.e., incongruent FRA).

Prior research has shown that FOF is associated with reduced PA levels in community-dwelling older adults using objectively measured PA data ( Jefferis et al., 2014 ; Choudhury et al., 2022 ). Our results broadly agree with it, showing that total daily PA volume was significantly lower in two high FOF groups (i.e., irrational and congruent) than the rational group. This suggests that regardless of balance performance and lower limb strength, low FOF was associated with high PA volume in our study sample. In linear regression analysis, after accounting for age, gender and BMI, reduced daily MIMS was significantly associated with irrational FRA, but not with congruent FRA. It can be attributed to the fact that the average age and BMI of congruent participants were higher than all other groups, and evidence suggests that that increasing older age and higher BMI contribute to lower PA levels in older adults ( Smith et al., 2015 ).

We did not observe any significant difference between two low FOF groups (i.e., rational and incongruent) in terms of daily PA volume. This suggests that, for maladaptive FRA, high physiological fall risk (not high FOF) had a stronger association with reduced daily PA accumulation in our study sample. In contrast to our findings, a recent study found that low physiological fall risk was more strongly associated with increased walking activity (steps/day) than low perceived fall risk in a sample of community-dwelling German older adults ( n = 294) ( Jansen et al., 2021 ). However, it should be noted that Jansen et al. used multiple independent risk factors (i.e., previous falls, balance impairment, gait impairment, and multimedication) to distinguish between high and low physiological fall risk, whereas they used only one tool (Short FES-I) to assess perceived fall risk. Furthermore, participants with low FOF and high physiological fall risk in that German older adult cohort ( Jansen et al., 2021 ) were relatively older than those in our study sample [mean (SD) age: 81.6 (5.5) years vs. 74.3 (7.0) years in our study]. Previous studies indicate that the likelihood of reduced participation in PA gradually increases with advanced age, because of age-related declines in muscle mass, muscle strength, and functional fitness (i.e., the physical capacity to perform activities of daily living independently and without the early onset of fatigue) ( Milanović et al., 2013 ; Westerterp, 2018 ; Suryadinata et al., 2020 ). Therefore, future research should examine how age-related functional declines mediate the relationship between maladaptive FRA and daily PA volume in older adults.

In our study, the peak PA intensity in both high FOF groups (i.e., irrational and congruent) was significantly lower than the rational group. Despite the differences in the PA metrics, this is in general agreement with the previous findings that showed older adults with irrational and congruent FRAs were more likely to spend less time in MVPA ( Thiamwong et al., 2023 ). Interestingly, after adjusting for confounders, the decrease in peak 30-min MIMS for irrational and congruent groups was almost equivalent in our study. This suggests that older adults with high FOF may restrict their participation in high intensity PA, irrespective of their physiological fall risk status. Our findings extend the previously reported association between PA intensity and FOF in older adults ( Sawa et al., 2020 ), highlighting the need to integrate cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce FOF in fall intervention programs.

For peak 30-min MIMS, we did not find any significant difference between two low FOF groups (i.e., rational and incongruent). This suggests that, similar to total PA volume, peak PA intensity was more strongly associated with high FOF (rather than high physiological fall risk) for maladaptive FRA in our sample. Unlike MVPA cut points that exclude PA intensities ≤3 METs or equivalent, peak 30-min MIMS considers acceleration magnitudes ranging from lower to higher peak efforts within a day, enabling comparison over the whole spectrum of PA intensity levels (e.g., light vs. vigorous) ( Zheng et al., 2023 ). Further research should investigate domains of peak PA efforts across different FRA groups, so that informed strategies can be developed to promote high-intensity PA participation according to the perceived and physiological risk of fall.

Based on the findings of our study, it can be conferred that the FRA assessment may be useful in designing customized PA interventions to promote an active lifestyle in older adults. For example, to increase PA participation in older adults with irrational FRA, cognitive behavioral therapy can be integrated into PA programs to improve their self-efficacy and sense of control over falling ( Tennstedt et al., 1998 ). For incongruent FRA, PA recommendations should include exercise regimens specifically designed to reduce physiological fall risk, such as high intensity balance and strength training, in addition to aerobic activities ( Sherrington et al., 2008 ). On the other hand, older adults with congruent FRA may benefit from PA programs that combine both balance and strength exercises, and cognitive behavioral therapy ( Brouwer et al., 2003 ).

A strength of our study is the use of MIMS metric to provide a comprehensive PA assessment (volume and intensity) enabling reliable, cross-study comparisons of our findings with other MIMS-based studies regardless of the device type, model or manufacturer. Furthermore, we used evidence-based cut-off points to determine FOF level (low vs. high FOF), balance status (poor vs. normal balance) and lower limb strength (below average vs. average strength) to categorize participants into FRA groups. However, our study has several limitations. First, to determine physiological fall risk status, we didn’t use the Physiological Profile Assessment ( Delbaere et al., 2010 ) or multiple independent risk factors ( Jansen et al., 2021 ), which might have led to different group formations than those studies. Instead, we used static balance and lower limb strength as physiological fall risk indicators. While balance and strength deficits are important predictors of falls in older adults, they might not account for all aspects of physiological fall risk (such as gait impairment, visual and sensory deficits, use of multi-medications etc.) ( Fabre et al., 2010 ). Second, it is to be noted that the balance performance measure (i.e., static balance) used in this study may not capture the full spectrum of an individual’s balance capabilities. There are different measures of balance performance, including static steady-state balance (i.e., the ability to maintain a steady position while standing or sitting), dynamic steady-state balance (i.e., the ability to maintain a steady position while performing postural transitions and walking), proactive balance (i.e., the ability to anticipate and mitigate a predicted postural disturbance), and reactive balance (i.e., the ability to recover a stable position following an unexpected postural disturbance) ( Shumway-Cook and Woollacott, 2007 ). Therefore, future studies may consider using more comprehensive assessments of balance performance in older adults to define physiological fall risk in FRA. Third, our study only considered FOF as the psychological fall risk measure in FRA and did not investigate other psychological constructs such as falls efficacy or balance confidence ( Moore et al., 2011 ). FOF and falls efficacy are two major fall-related psychological constructs in preventing and managing fall risks in older adults. It is to be noted that, though FOF and falls efficacy are correlated, they represent theoretically distinct concepts ( Hadjistavropoulos et al., 2011 ). FOF is defined as “the lasting concerns about falling that leads to an individual avoiding activities that one remains capable of performing.” Some common instruments for FOF measurement include FES-I, Short FES-I, Iconographical Falls Efficacy Scale (ICON-FES), Geriatric Fear of Falling Measure (GFFM), Survey of Activities and Fear of Falling in the Elderly (SAFE), Fear of Falling Avoidance Behaviour Questionnaire (FFABQ) etc., ( Soh et al., 2021 ). On the other hand, falls efficacy is defined as the perceived confidence in one’s ability to carry out activities of daily living without experiencing a fall ( Moore and Ellis, 2008 ). Existing instruments for measuring falls efficacy include Falls Efficacy Scale (FES), modified FES (MFES), Perceived Ability to Prevent and Manage Fall Risks (PAPMFR), and Perceived Ability to Manage Risk of Falls or Actual Falls (PAMF) ( Soh et al., 2021 ). Prior research has reported that, compared to FOF, falls efficacy shows stronger relationship with measures of basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADL-IADL), and physical and social functioning ( Tinetti et al., 1994 ). Therefore, future studies should consider exploring the combined effects of falls efficacy and physiological fall risk measures on habitual PA level to determine whether FOF or fall efficacy should be considered as a target for PA interventions in older adults. Fourth, to date, there exists no established cut-offs for the MIMS metric to categorize total PA volume and intensity that correspond to meeting national PA guidelines, and it is still unknown how well MIMS/minute can estimate energy expenditure ( Vilar-Gomez et al., 2023 ). Our study just provided a first step toward the use of a standardized metric to associate PA behavior with FRA in a community-dwelling older adult sample in the US. Future studies should examine such associations in large, nationally representative populations to establish benchmark values for daily MIMS and peak 30-min MIMS in different FRA categories. Fifth, the cross-sectional design of the study didn’t allow us to determine a causal relationship between FRA and PA, so reverse and/or bidirectional causality might still be present. Sixth, although we controlled for age, gender, and BMI in the regression analyses, there remains the possibility of additional residual confounding [such as neuropsychological constructs that have been associated with FOF, which include depression, anxiety, neuroticism, attention, and executive function ( Delbaere et al., 2010 )]. Finally, our sample size was relatively small and 79% of participants were female. The generalizability of our findings might be restricted by the small, female dominant nature of our sample.

In conclusion, compared to rational FRA, the habitual PA level (daily MIMS and peak 30-min MIMS) was lower in both high FOF groups (i.e., irrational and congruent), but not in incongruent group. This suggests that, for maladaptive FRA in our study sample, high perceived fall risk had a stronger association with reduced PA level, rather than high physiological fall risk. When controlled for covariates, decrease in peak PA intensity remained significantly associated with irrational and congruent FRAs, indicating that older adults with high FOF performed PA at lower peak efforts, irrespective of their physiological fall status. Future prospective studies should focus on identifying the optimal habitual PA level (total PA volume and peak PA intensity) in accordance with an older adult’s FOF and physiological fall risk to better inform public health policies for sustainable, effective PA framework.

Grids, layouts, and responsive design, what are breakpoints, four common breakpoints, examples of breakpoints in use, tips for designing with breakpoints.

Both grids and layouts are essential components of  responsive web design . In responsive design, the design adapts and reacts to device characteristics and screen sizes.  

Grids provide an organized way to efficiently create layouts in web and mobile designs. A grid is made up of columns, gutters, and margins that provide a structure for the layout of elements on a page.

A layout refers to how the different content and UI elements that make up a page are positioned on a screen. Layouts allow designers to utilize the space available on a screen or device to make the design and content most meaningful for users.  

Grids are the structure that layouts are designed on. In addition to grids, breakpoints are fundamental in creating responsive designs.

Breakpoints are the building blocks of responsive design. They allow designers to adjust the layout to fit the needs of various screen sizes and devices.

A breakpoint defines a screen size where the design should adjust to a different layout.

 Technically, a breakpoint is a specific screen size. When a window size hits that specific value, (for example, when because the user resized their browser window), the layout will change.

In practice, however, designers tend to use the word “breakpoint” to refer to the screen-size range (minimum and maximum width) for which a specific layout will be shown, because that is what they have to specify in media queries.  For example, a desktop breakpoint might range from 1200px to 1400px — meaning that the desktop layout will be shown on any screen with the width in that range.

The more breakpoints you have, the more your design will be able to adapt to granular screen-size variations properly and gracefully. However, having many layouts corresponding to a plethora of screen sizes may not work in practical situations, where design resources are limited. In practice, designers usually accommodate only 2–3 breakpoints.

Typically, designers will consider designing for 4 basic breakpoints.  We use T-shirt sizing (small, medium, large) as there is no specific standard for each size. As mentioned previously, each breakpoint usually contains a minimum and maximum width that is customizable to fit the design’s layout needs. (A starting point for determining the exact values for these breakpoints would be to analyze the range of devices that your audience uses when accessing your site and then establish the breakpoints so you optimally accommodate the more common display sizes.)

  • Extra-small: This range is intended for mobile and generally is up to 500px (if you include the device when in landscape orientation). A 4-column grid is commonly used at this breakpoint size.
  • Small: This range accounts for tablet devices and ranges from 500 px to 1200 px. An 8-column grid is commonly used at this tablet size.
  • Medium: This range is meant for laptop devices and typically ranges from 1200 px to 1400px. A 12-column grid is generally used at this size.
  • Large: This range considers the large external monitor size and is 1400px and larger. The 12-column grid is generally continued at this size.

Common breakpoints in responsive design

Layout Changes

 The following layout changes commonly occur when shifting between breakpoint sizes:

  • Different navigation: For example, the left navigation may collapse under a hamburger icon when transitioning from a medium to small or extra-small breakpoint.
  • Collapsing columns: A right column, if present, may collapse into the main content area or become available elsewhere.
  • Different amounts of visible content: Layout columns may increase or decrease, resulting in more or fewer elements (cards, files, products, etc.) in a given row.

Example 1: Web to Mobile

Warby Parker is an eyewear brand. Its responsive website used a column grid to create an attractive visual experience.

At the medium screen size, 3 consistently sized columns made up the grid structure, and elements were aligned to and within these columns. On mobile (small screen size), Warby Parker’s 3-column grid reflowed into a one-column grid structure.

Example 2: Desktop to Laptop

On IBM’s website, the left navigation was visible by default in the layout corresponding to the large screen sizes, but at medium screen sizes, it was collapsed under a hamburger icon in the top bar.

Our third example is from Airbnb, a travel-booking site. At the large screen size, both a list of properties and a map with their locations were displayed on the screen. At the small size (corresponding to tablet devices), the list became the default display and the map was hidden behind a button.

Breakpoints are fundamental to responsive design and to creating usable layouts and experiences.

Define Your Breakpoints

If you don’t already have breakpoints determined, take some time to set them up. Think about the common ranges discussed above and refine them as needed. Decide on a sensible naming convention (like T-shirt sizing) that can adapt if you need to change your breakpoints. For example, if you discover that most of your mobile users now use larger smartphones, you may need to adjust your breakpoints for mobile to accommodate these larger display sizes.

Involve your development team in defining your breakpoints, because that team will set up the website's breakpoints.

If you’re working with an existing website, the breakpoints will most likely be established. In this case, take time to understand the different breakpoints so you can design layouts appropriately.

Design with Breakpoints in Mind

Once you have your breakpoints defined, think through how the design (including content) will flow and rearrange at these different sizes. Ask yourself:

  • Is there something that your users need to know at a particular size?
  • Are those crucial pieces of information easily available in the layout, at that size ?
  • Is there anything that needs to change from the standard flow of content and layout?

For example, at the extra-small size (mobile), space is limited. Collapsing a left navigation under a hamburger icon will allow the user to focus on important content.

Or, if at large screen sizes, your main call to action was in the rightmost column, will this still be accessible on mobile, if your columns are stacked? Creating an exception from regular column stacking to make the call to action more discoverable (for example by making some preceding content collapsible under accordions) may be needed. These kinds of questions will help you decide how the layout will change from breakpoint to breakpoint. Once you created and tested your design, communicate to developers how the design will change based on the established breakpoints.

A group of economists recently performed an experiment on around 100 of the largest companies in the country, applying for jobs using made-up résumés with equivalent qualifications but different personal characteristics. They changed applicants’ names to suggest that they were white or Black, and male or female — Latisha or Amy, Lamar or Adam.

On Monday, they released the names of the companies . On average, they found, employers contacted the presumed white applicants 9.5 percent more often than the presumed Black applicants.

Yet this practice varied significantly by firm and industry. One-fifth of the companies — many of them retailers or car dealers — were responsible for nearly half of the gap in callbacks to white and Black applicants.

Two companies favored white applicants over Black applicants significantly more than others. They were AutoNation, a used car retailer, which contacted presumed white applicants 43 percent more often, and Genuine Parts Company, which sells auto parts including under the NAPA brand, and called presumed white candidates 33 percent more often.

In a statement, Heather Ross, a spokeswoman for Genuine Parts, said, “We are always evaluating our practices to ensure inclusivity and break down barriers, and we will continue to do so.” AutoNation did not respond to a request for comment.

Companies With the Largest and Smallest Racial Contact Gaps

Of the 97 companies in the experiment, two stood out as contacting presumed white job applicants significantly more often than presumed Black ones. At 14 companies, there was little or no difference in how often they called back the presumed white or Black applicants.

Known as an audit study , the experiment was the largest of its kind in the United States: The researchers sent 80,000 résumés to 10,000 jobs from 2019 to 2021. The results demonstrate how entrenched employment discrimination is in parts of the U.S. labor market — and the extent to which Black workers start behind in certain industries.

“I am not in the least bit surprised,” said Daiquiri Steele, an assistant professor at the University of Alabama School of Law who previously worked for the Department of Labor on employment discrimination. “If you’re having trouble breaking in, the biggest issue is the ripple effect it has. It affects your wages and the economy of your community going forward.”

Some companies showed no difference in how they treated applications from people assumed to be white or Black. Their human resources practices — and one policy in particular (more on that later) — offer guidance for how companies can avoid biased decisions in the hiring process.

A lack of racial bias was more common in certain industries: food stores, including Kroger; food products, including Mondelez; freight and transport, including FedEx and Ryder; and wholesale, including Sysco and McLane Company.

“We want to bring people’s attention not only to the fact that racism is real, sexism is real, some are discriminating, but also that it’s possible to do better, and there’s something to be learned from those that have been doing a good job,” said Patrick Kline, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, who conducted the study with Evan K. Rose at the University of Chicago and Christopher R. Walters at Berkeley.

The researchers first published details of their experiment in 2021, but without naming the companies. The new paper, which is set to run in the American Economic Review, names the companies and explains the methodology developed to group them by their performance, while accounting for statistical noise.

Sample Résumés From the Experiment

Fictitious résumés sent to large U.S. companies revealed a preference, on average, for candidates whose names suggested that they were white.

To assign names, the researchers started with a prior list that had been assembled using Massachusetts birth certificates from 1974 to 1979. They then supplemented this list with names found in a database of speeding tickets issued in North Carolina between 2006 and 2018, classifying a name as “distinctive” if more than 90 percent of people with that name were of a particular race.

The study includes 97 firms. The jobs the researchers applied to were entry level, not requiring a college degree or substantial work experience. In addition to race and gender, the researchers tested other characteristics protected by law , like age and sexual orientation.

They sent up to 1,000 applications to each company, applying for as many as 125 jobs per company in locations nationwide, to try to uncover patterns in companies’ operations versus isolated instances. Then they tracked whether the employer contacted the applicant within 30 days.

A bias against Black names

Companies requiring lots of interaction with customers, like sales and retail, particularly in the auto sector, were most likely to show a preference for applicants presumed to be white. This was true even when applying for positions at those firms that didn’t involve customer interaction, suggesting that discriminatory practices were baked in to corporate culture or H.R. practices, the researchers said.

Still, there were exceptions — some of the companies exhibiting the least bias were retailers, like Lowe’s and Target.

The study may underestimate the rate of discrimination against Black applicants in the labor market as a whole because it tested large companies, which tend to discriminate less, said Lincoln Quillian, a sociologist at Northwestern who analyzes audit studies. It did not include names intended to represent Latino or Asian American applicants, but other research suggests that they are also contacted less than white applicants, though they face less discrimination than Black applicants.

The experiment ended in 2021, and some of the companies involved might have changed their practices since. Still, a review of all available audit studies found that discrimination against Black applicants had not changed in three decades. After the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, such discrimination was found to have disappeared among certain employers, but the researchers behind that study said the effect was most likely short-lived.

Gender, age and L.G.B.T.Q. status

On average, companies did not treat male and female applicants differently. This aligns with other research showing that gender discrimination against women is rare in entry-level jobs, and starts later in careers.

However, when companies did favor men (especially in manufacturing) or women (mostly at apparel stores), the biases were much larger than for race. Builders FirstSource contacted presumed male applicants more than twice as often as female ones. Ascena, which owns brands like Ann Taylor, contacted women 66 percent more than men.

Neither company responded to requests for comment.

The consequences of being female differed by race. The differences were small, but being female was a slight benefit for white applicants, and a slight penalty for Black applicants.

The researchers also tested several other characteristics protected by law, with a smaller number of résumés. They found there was a small penalty for being over 40.

Overall, they found no penalty for using nonbinary pronouns. Being gay, as indicated by including membership in an L.G.B.T.Q. club on the résumé, resulted in a slight penalty for white applicants, but benefited Black applicants — although the effect was small, when this was on their résumés, the racial penalty disappeared.

Under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, discrimination is illegal even if it’s unintentional . Yet in the real world, it is difficult for job applicants to know why they did not hear back from a company.

“These practices are particularly challenging to address because applicants often do not know whether they are being discriminated against in the hiring process,” Brandalyn Bickner, a spokeswoman for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said in a statement. (It has seen the data and spoken with the researchers, though it could not use an academic study as the basis for an investigation, she said.)

What companies can do to reduce discrimination

Several common measures — like employing a chief diversity officer, offering diversity training or having a diverse board — were not correlated with decreased discrimination in entry-level hiring, the researchers found.

But one thing strongly predicted less discrimination: a centralized H.R. operation.

The researchers recorded the voice mail messages that the fake applicants received. When a company’s calls came from fewer individual phone numbers, suggesting that they were originating from a central office, there tended to be less bias . When they came from individual hiring managers at local stores or warehouses, there was more. These messages often sounded frantic and informal, asking if an applicant could start the next day, for example.

“That’s when implicit biases kick in,” Professor Kline said. A more formalized hiring process helps overcome this, he said: “Just thinking about things, which steps to take, having to run something by someone for approval, can be quite important in mitigating bias.”

At Sysco, a wholesale restaurant food distributor, which showed no racial bias in the study, a centralized recruitment team reviews résumés and decides whom to call. “Consistency in how we review candidates, with a focus on the requirements of the position, is key,” said Ron Phillips, Sysco’s chief human resources officer. “It lessens the opportunity for personal viewpoints to rise in the process.”

Another important factor is diversity among the people hiring, said Paula Hubbard, the chief human resources officer at McLane Company. It procures, stores and delivers products for large chains like Walmart, and showed no racial bias in the study. Around 40 percent of the company’s recruiters are people of color, and 60 percent are women.

Diversifying the pool of people who apply also helps, H.R. officials said. McLane goes to events for women in trucking and puts up billboards in Spanish.

So does hiring based on skills, versus degrees . While McLane used to require a college degree for many roles, it changed that practice after determining that specific skills mattered more for warehousing or driving jobs. “We now do that for all our jobs: Is there truly a degree required?” Ms. Hubbard said. “Why? Does it make sense? Is experience enough?”

Hilton, another company that showed no racial bias in the study, also stopped requiring degrees for many jobs, in 2018.

Another factor associated with less bias in hiring, the new study found, was more regulatory scrutiny — like at federal contractors, or companies with more Labor Department citations.

Finally, more profitable companies were less biased, in line with a long-held economics theory by the Nobel Prize winner Gary Becker that discrimination is bad for business. Economists said that could be because the more profitable companies benefit from a more diverse set of employees. Or it could be an indication that they had more efficient business processes, in H.R. and elsewhere.

A Better Approach to Mergers and Acquisitions

Far more mergers succeed today than in the past. Here’s how to post a win.

Twenty years ago, consultants at Bain & Company published a book that explored a dispiriting reality: Although companies spent billions of dollars a year pursuing deals, 70% of mergers and acquisitions wound up as failures.

But today those odds have inverted. According to new research by Bain, over the past 20 years firms have done more than 660,000 acquisitions, worth a total of $56 trillion, with deals reaching a peak in 2021. And close to 70% of them have succeeded. Even among the roughly 30% that were less successful, many of the deals still created some value.

What has changed? This article presents four explanations for the turnabout.

Twenty years ago, consultants at Bain & Company published a book that explored a dispiriting reality: Although companies spent billions of dollars a year pursuing deals, 70% of mergers and acquisitions wound up as failures. The book, Mastering the Merger , was released in the wake of a series of corporate marriages that ended badly, including AOL and Time Warner, Daimler and Chrysler, and Citicorp and Travelers. This wasn’t a new phenomenon. Academic studies dating back to the 1970s had concluded that most acquisitions don’t play out the way the investment bankers promise. Even among deals that appeared profitable from investors’ perspective, Bain’s surveys of executives showed that many fell short of the internal projections made to justify the purchase.
