Gumraah Movie Review:
Link Copied

Gumraah Movie REVIEW:
Gumraah starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Murnal Thakur and Ronit Roy is a murder mystery that stands true to its title. As the film started, we get to see a man in a yellow raincoat standing in the rain. I was like ‘Hello, Ek Villain’ as it gave me that vibe. I was wondering if the film will have some Ek Villain touch but much to my delight, I didn’t see that as the film proceeded.
Aditya Roy Kapur essays the role of dual characters Arjun Seghal and Sooraj Rana. Both are the sides of the same coin, while one is a hot-headed person, the other one is calm and composed. Both their lives contradict each other but there’s always something that binds them together. Both their characters are poles apart but there’s one thing that connects them and that is a murder case. Gumraah is a suspense thriller which is backed with a love story, a dysfunctional family, sibling issues.
Yes, the first part will keep you engrossed as one by one the evidence gets unfolded but seems a little drag. Even you will continuously keep solving the jigsaw puzzle and sooner or later you get to understand the gist of the story. I predicted the first half and it lived up to it and to be honest, I did try to crack the second part as well but Gumraah did surprise me. The movie became a bit interesting in the second part when it finally picked up the pace.
The story might be quite an intriguing one on papers but the execution seems poor. There been so many times where I wasn’t convinced or felt connected to the movie. It grabbed my attention in bits and parts. Even though the runtime is 2h 10m, it felt like a 3 hour film which was tiresome.
The murder investigation of a young man takes an unexpected turn when the cops discover that the prime suspect has a lookalike. As the police officers are completely baffled by the situation, they discover that both the lookalikes are connected to the case and are the prime suspects. Will they be able to find the guilty? Will the police officers solve the complicated case?

Star Performances:
Ladies, you’re in for a hot treat if you are a fan of Aditya Roy Kapur. The man demands attention for all the right reasons. He is seen in dual characters and trust me, you will enjoy him in both avatars. While one is organised, the other one is all over the place. One is composed and the other one is cocky and that’s what attracts me the most, to be honest. Aditya was flawless in both parts and I loved it. No, it is not the inner fan who is saying this but Aditya was quite promising.
Mrunal Thakur plays the role of a police investigator Shivani who is smart and alert. A no nonsense officer that will not take a second to call you out for your shit. This is the first time I’m seeing Mrunal in a tough cop and somewhere she was lacking that stance and poise. It feels she was trying way to hard to look like a tough cop and that was not convincing me. Otherwise, I have enjoyed her performances before and she is one promising star; however, there was something that she lacked in Gumraah.
Ronit Roy as ACP Yadav is stellar. He has a strong hold onscreen and delivers yet again a killer performance. On the other hand, Deepak Kalra did a fab job playing Chaddi, Aditya ‘s friend.
We also see the Liggi star Vedika Pinto who is pretty decent playing Aditya ‘s love interest.
Direction/ Screenplay:
Vardhan Ketkar is the captain of the ship and got a full fledged film to direct after being an assistant director of Dabangg , Brother, Kapoor and Sons. The film was touted to be a suspense thriller and usually, we see that there’s a certain tension or ambience that will make you feel the vibe; however, I didn’t that get.
Vardhan even tried to keep the commercial touch to the film by adding typical party tracks and romantic songs. Though the action sequences were not well choreographed, I liked how Vardhan showed us the massy hero vibes from Aditya. Now that I look back at his filmography, I have not seen him in full massy hero who dances with girls around him or gives a dhaasu action performance. It is a different change and I liked that part of Aditya.
Conclusion:
Concluding my Gumraah review, Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur starrer is a decent watch and will surely keep you hooked in bits and parts. It’s the unusual story that will interest you but it’s the dull execution that can be a little off-putting.

- Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur-starrer Gumraah releases in theatres today, April 7.
- The film is a remake of the 2019 Tamil film, Thadam.
- The film is directed by Vardhan Ketkar.
Cast & Crew

Release Date: 7 Apr, 2023
Even before the pandemic had hit, films from the South industries had quite become the choice for movie-goers. One need not be reminded how a film like KGF, which released with Zero at the box office and which everyone thought would be a box office dud, proved to be such a hit. So, Bollywood sought an easy way out – remaking hit South projects. Gumraah is the latest one to join the bandwagon.
A remake of Tamil actor Arun Vijay’s Thadam , this one is also a scene-by-scene remake of the original. This time, we have Aditya Roy Kapur, who is trying to carve his niche as an action hero as well. So, he doubles up as the suave, successful Arjun and the intelligent con artist, Sooraj aka Ronnie. A murder happens and the inspector picks up Arjun and vows to put him behind bars for life (after all, he had been waiting to seek his revenge on Arjun). However, things quickly lead to confusion as Arjun’s humshakal lands at the police station the same night, confusing everyone about who the real murderer is. The police have two days to find out.
If ACP Yadav is hell-bent on proving that Arjun is the culprit, inspector Shivani (played by Mrunal Thakur) is convinced that the killer is Sooraj. Events unfold one after the other, and well, if you have seen the original, you know what is going to happen!
Watch the trailer here :
Remaking thrillers can be a risky deal. If you have seen the original, you might lose interest in knowing what’s going to happen next, because well, you know it! Just like Helen simply vanished from OTT just months before Mili’s release, you would not find Thadam anymore on OTT. But a simple search would make you land on a YouTube page that has the film, dubbed in Hindi. Except for different faces and the story being centred around Delhi - is there anything new to offer? We highly doubt that. READ Gumraah trailer out. Aditya Roy Kapur, Mrunal Thakur's film is about murders, one-liners and thrill
Vardhan Ketkar helms the remake and all we could hope was for him to have his input into the project. See the Hindi dubbed version of Thadam and Gumraah side-by-side and you'll know that hardly anything new has been incorporated. Aditya Roy Kapur gets angry in the same way and kicks his bike just like Arun Vijay did in the original. And honestly, we can not really point fingers at him.
Even the action sequences are choreographed like what you see in most South films. The problematic character here, Sooraj makes his entry with a cigarette stuffed in his mouth, a messy appearance, a lot of dialoguebaazi and his shirt being unbuttoned till his belly (after all, how will the audience see those abs peeking otherwise?). C’mon Bollywood, you can do better than aping, right?
View this post on Instagram A post shared by @adityaroykapur
The film also has the most stereotypical instances of what the makers think would turn out to be tearjerkers.
Aditya Roy Kapur is earnest in playing both the characters and tries to make you feel how they are starkly different from each other with his performance. From the goody-two-shoes romantic boy to the womaniser con artist, who loves those close to him dearly, he lends markedly different characteristics to each. Mrunal Thakur and Ronit Roy as Shivani and ACP Yadav have to do the bare minimum. Their talents are underutilised and there was not much meat given to the characters for the actors to play around with. Vedika Pinto plays Janhvi, Arjun’s girlfriend, a film reviewer looking for a ‘home wali feeling’ in Gurgaon. Her performance could have been better.
Is Gumraah worth a watch? Yes, if you have not seen the original. Despite the pace being unstable and the confusion the film creates, you might still enjoy it. However, if you have watched the original, this may not be your pick, unless you just want to savour Aditya Roy Kapur’s hotness on screen.

Gumraah movie review: Aditya Roy Kapur's double turn in this typical thriller is quite average
Gumraah movie review: this police procedural that follows two lookalikes in a murder case fails to excite you with its commonplace reveals and turns..
One murder, two suspects with the same face. It's a conundrum for the police to solve in Gumraah (2023), a thriller which ends up taking very predictable turns. The film begins in a chilling manner with a brutal murder of a man. The culprit is played by Aditya Roy Kapur in his first double role. Eventually, it leads up to the capture of two men for the same crime, and leaves the audience and the police trying to sort out who could be the killer. (Also read: Gumraah trailer: Aditya Roy Kapur stars as identical suspects in this intriguing murder mystery )
Gumraah, directed by Vardhan Ketkar, informs viewers from the beginning that it is 'inspired by true cases'. At the end, the film cites examples from countries like Malaysia, US, the UK, and Germany to name a few where this sort of situation has occurred. After the murder of a young techie, Mrunal Thakur 's Shivani Mathur is assigned to the case. Her name seems to be a nod to Rani Mukerji's character from Mardaani (2014) perhaps. The extremely focused and no-nonsense Shivani has her early theories on the case but once her superior ACP Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy) gets up to date, he has the whole thing figured out.
Dhiren seems to have a previous longstanding vendetta against Arjun Sehgal (Aditya) and has already decided he's guilty. Meanwhile, the police find Sooraj Rana aka Ronnie (also Aditya) and haul him in for the same crime. With two different agendas, Dhiren and Shivani have to figure out who is lying and who is telling the truth.
As is the case with most Hindi films these days, this too is a retelling of a south hit. Gumraah is a remake of the Tamil film Thadam (2019) which features Arun Vijay in a double role. But instead of focusing on the murder mystery, within 20-odd minutes of the film, it shifts into a flashback in the lives of Arjun and Sooraj, trying to explain how they got to the night of the murder. It then delves into a romance with the introduction of Janhvi (Vedika) with Arjun, while also juggling Sooraj's side track of a robbery gone wrong with his friend and sidekick Chaddi (Deepak Kalra).
The big reveal of how exactly Arjun and Sooraj are tied to one another is also underwhelming. But the film plays it for a big 'aha' moment, which doesn't work. The performances in the film are most perfunctory. There is no real standout here. Aditya separates both characters in a typical manner. One of the men is respectable, while the other is a rogue. Ronit and Mrunal's characters are also opposites in that they too have already assumed guilt of one man over the other. Their dogged beliefs in their convictions lead the second half of the film.
The crime thriller has some well-done action sequences and few unintentional laugh-out-loud moments with its dialogues, but overall, it feels like an overlong episode of a television show. The romance detour in the first half feels like a whole another film.
Gumraah won't bore you, but it won't keep you excited with what's about to occur next. It's a pattern seen lately in a lot of criminal versus law enforcement thrillers, that the police officers even with their technology and vast manpower, still remain one step behind the culprit, who has thought at least ten to twenty steps ahead. It doesn't convince audiences nearly as well if the whole plot has to be explained to the audience in a 'here's what happened' flashback.

Gumraah Review: Aditya Roy Kapur, Mrunal Thakur Star In Passably Engaging Whodunnit
Gumraah review: given his dual role, aditya roy kapur is inevitably in every scene. the actor makes the most of the opportunity..
Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur in Gumraah . (courtesy: adityaroykapur )
Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Mrunal Thakur, Ronit Roy
Director: Vardhan Ketkar
Rating: Two stars (out of 5)
Hindi remakes of Tamil hits have assumed the proportions of a torrent. Gumraah , directed by Vardhan Ketkar, is the latest. The film borrows the plot of 2019's Thadam lock, stock and barrel. Freshness is the last think one can expect from it. Not that it ever appears inclined to make any visible effort in that direction.
While it is never obviously a bright idea to produce an iteration of a murder mystery, a recent one at that, Gumraah does not go majorly astray although it is, in the ultimate analysis, only a passably engaging whodunnit. It does manage to hold your attention while it lasts, especially if you have no idea at all about the contents of the original film.
The writer-director of Thadam , Magizh Thirumeni, is credited for the story on which Aseem Arora's screenplay is based. When the film opts to move away from the plot, it does so only in minor ways. After a start that does not inspire much confidence, Gumraah wends its way through a flurry of twists and turns that obviously cannot be spelt out without giving away too much.
In the opening moments of the 129-minute Gumraah , a man is stabbed to death with a screwdriver in a bungalow in an upmarket Delhi neighbourhood. The killer is under a yellow hoodie that does little to hide his face. It isn't meant to. The story rests on the man's full visage being captured in a selfie clicked by a young couple in the house opposite the crime scene.
The cops stumble upon the crucial image soon after they swing into action. The commissioner of police deploys a rookie investigator Shalini Mathur (Mrunal Thakur) for the job. When one of the constables airily spins a theory about the sequence of events, the young lady curtly tells him he has got it all wrong.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy) reaches the bungalow as his men go about collecting evidence. He has no love lost for Shalini Mathur. It becomes instantly apparent that the rivalry between the old warhorse and the new police academy product is going to impact the progress of the probe.
The prime suspect, Arjun Sehgal (Aditya Roy Kapur), a civil engineer with an IIT degree and a flourishing career, is brought to the police station for interrogation. ACP Yadav is confident that this is an open-and-shut case because there is no doubt in his mind about the identity of the culprit.
His cockiness goes out the window when a lookalike of Arjun's, Sooraj 'Ronnie" Rana (Kapur again), a conman and gambler, is arrested while trying to flee the city. Arjun and Sooraj aren't aware of each other while they are subjected to third-degree treatment in adjoining rooms in the police station. Neither makes a confession.
The cops are in a bind. Who was the guy who was spotted on the balcony of the bungalow where the murder took place? Matters are messed up further because one of the police officers has an axe to grind with one of the suspects. With the police force working at cross-purposes, the investigation is in danger of being derailed.
The film goes a bit off the track once the reveals quickly pile up after the intermission. The individual histories of the two suspects come to the fore and leave behind a puddle of mush. The contrived and convoluted course of the probe, too, is largely desultory.
It there is anything at all that is startling, is the overwhelmingly prosaic nature, if not outright drudgery, of this police procedural that does have a method but not enough madness to go from routine to rousing when the proceedings turn plodding.
Lead actor Aditya Roy Kapur plays two temperamentally different men. One is a suave corporate creature, the other is a street-smart trickster. Since the script does not allow the actor to project two distinct personalities, one of the guys wears solid single-colour formal shirts, the other is given a floral and silken shirt to sport. So, the differences between the two men are not even skin-deep.
Just in case you still cannot distinguish one from the other, Arjun has a girlfriend (Vedika Pinto), an IT professional who works in the Gurgaon building that houses his office. He woos her in the course of several trips that they make in an elevator.
Arjun asks her out for a coffee. She dismisses the question point-blank. Her stock response is: Sahi sawaal pucho (ask the right question). By the time Arjun does get around to doing what the girl demands, they have spent enough time in the elevator to know each other a bit.
This passage of the film only serves to take the spotlight away from the murder investigation. And like the lift in which the relationship blossoms, the film goes up and down on what has the feel of a mechanical pulley. There is no room here for any startling deviations from genre conventions.
To return to Sooraj, you can identify him by, apart from the colourful shirt he wears from beginning to end, his bum chum and partner in crime Chaddi (Deepak Kalra). The two get into big trouble with a gangster. Chaddi's life is in danger unless Sooraj can pay a huge sum of money to the ruthless criminal.
Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com
So now, where are we? Sooraj seems to have a motive for murder - he is in urgent need of money. Arjun, on his part, has an alibi. No big deal, let's get it over with, ACP Yadav intones. But no, the end of the case isn't nigh. The policemen continue to go round in circles until our heads begin to spin. Every time one of them says that they know who the killer is, you know he/she is flying a kite.
Given his dual role, Aditya Roy Kapur is inevitably in every scene. The actor makes the most of the opportunity. Mrunal Thakur makes it through the film with a single expression that hovers between the deadpan and the bewildered. That about sums up Gumraah . The film's mildly diverting generic drill is anything but exciting.

Gumraah movie review: Aditya Roy Kapur-starrer is a drag
Gumraah movie review: a remake of the tamil-language ‘thadam’ (2019), gumraah again raises the question why hindi films are choosing to remake such recent films, especially when the originals are easily available on a streaming platform..
The brutal murder of a young man is a puzzle for the cops assigned to the case. Inspector Shivani (Mrunal Thakur) is the kind of brisk no-nonsense policewoman who barks orders at her underlings, and doesn’t suffer fools gladly, even if it is her senior (Ronit Roy). Who can the killer be? Is it the clean-cut Arjun or the low-life Ronnie, both played by Aditya Roy Kapur in a double role.
The chief question that comes to mind while watching ‘Gumraah’, a remake of the Tamil-language ‘Thadam’ (2019), is this: why are Hindi films choosing to remake such recent films, especially when the original could just as easily be available on a streaming platform? It’s almost like there are no original ideas left in Bollywood, given that last week’s ‘Bholaa’ was also a remake of the 2019 ‘Kaithi’, also in Tamil.
I haven’t seen the original, so I can’t compare the two, but ‘Gumraah’ is nothing but a drag. Nothing either of the suspects do — Arjun who romances his perky colleague (Vedika Pinto), nor Ronnie who hangs out with his pal (Deepak Kalra) — evoke the slightest bit of interest. The key conflict arises from the fact that both men are dead ringers for each other, so which of the two was it who raised the sharp object and stabbed his victim multiple times?
Other questions arise. Why would the perpetrator wear a blinding yellow raincoat, a colour that can be seen a mile afar? How does he escape without said item of clothing not being splashed in blood? Why do policewomen in Bollywood flicks sport the kind of ponytail which can only be created with such finesse by a hair-dresser? Why is ‘Chaddhi’ such a popular name for the hero’s BFF?
Actually, you know what, chuck it. Figuring those answers isn’t worth my time. Nor was the film.

Gumraah Movie Review: A convoluted screenplay makes this a drab thriller
Rating: ( 2 / 5).
The Hindi film industry seems to be under some sort of dry spell, propelling itself to churn out films that seek stories from the South. Close on the heels of Bholaa , the remake of Kaithi (2019), Hindi cinema is back with yet another remake, Gumraah , which is the remake of Arun Vijay-Magizh Thirumeni’s Thadam . However, Gumraah opts for the familiar tropes instead of taking a compelling route to tell the borrowed narrative.
Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Mrunal Thakur, Vedhika Pinto, and others
Director: Vardhan Ketkar
Gumraah is a lot of things. It is a whodunit. It is the story of a dysfunctional family. It is a reflection of man's extreme temptations. It is about the butterfly effect. It is about the biases of people, even if they are in positions of power. Despite having all these themes, Gumraah fails to provoke a sense of satisfaction when you walk out of the cinema halls. Instead, its only residue is the convoluted narration that does not have a lasting impact. The film starts off with a murder taking place at a posh bungalow and the makers leave no stone unturned to carefully stress the portions that can potentially serve as evidence of the crime scene. There is no surprise that the killer is played by Aditya Roy Kapur, who finishes off a resident, Akash Sardana, by stabbing him multiple times with a screwdriver. Why show the same stabbing sequence multiple times with no additional or substantial observations? We are also introduced to SI Shivani Mathur (Mrunal Thakur) who takes no time to envision the exact modus operandi, and yet she misses a crucial piece of evidence that would have long solved the case. Gumraah , in its first half, is fast-paced, and explores the twin roles of Aditya Roy Kapur — Arjun Sehgal, a suave, well-settled single man with a white-collar job, and Suraaj Rana, a street-smart rookie, who has a particularly sharp knowledge on law. After coming across an important photograph, the lookalikes are brought under custody. With major portions of the film set within the police station, Gumraah manages to capture some subtleties that are seen within the four walls of police stations. There is casual profiling on one side, and we see how Shivani is determined of Arjun's innocence. This naivete is a reflection of the casual sexism. Oh, Suraaj's sidekick is subject to some garden-variety body shaming. I am not here to say the original didn't have all of this, but why to repeat the flaws in the remake? Even the portions that involve Arjun’s romance with Janhvi, a film critic (thankfully we know her name and occupation but we never get to see her actually work), seem very artificial. Essentially, Gumraah allows Aditya to exhibit his acting chops, but despite his sincere efforts, the characters seem to be just a reflection of the other, barring their costume and apparel choices. They are twins and they do share a bond, but the actor hardly makes it believable. Mrunal puts on a perennial poker face without the barest of reactions. Gumraah plays safe in some instances by not moving farther from its source material. It also subtly talks about biases that humans can form, that too in the most volatile of venues, the police stations. The remake also gives enough fodder to think about how people from privileged backgrounds come with a sense of superiority even if they are suspects. There is also a setup of two dysfunctional families, which receive enough room to explore complicated emotions. For example, Arjun and Suraaj come from a broken family where the parents have strained relationships and questionable habits. However, they never vilify their parents. All that Gumraah needed was some clean screenplay to dish out its never-ending twists and turns, and when it fails on an essential requirement, there is nothing that can stop the film from being a drab experience... not even two Aditya Roy Kapurs.

Gumrah Movie Trailer Review:
Gumrah movie trailer review in hindi:

Gumrah Movie

Gumraah movie review: Aditya Roy Kapur shines in a flawed but decent thriller
Aditya Roy Kapur’s Gumraah is the official remake of Arun Vijay’s Tamil hit Thadam.
Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Mrunal Thakur, Vedika, Ronit Roy, Deepak Kalra
Director: Vardhan Ketkar
Language: Hindi
After Shehzada , Selfiee and Bholaa , Bollywood is offering its fourth remake of a south-Indian film this Friday with Aditya Roy Kapur’s thriller Gumraah , which is the adaptation of Arun Vijay’s 2019 film Thadam .
While the content of the earlier three movies garnered mixed responses from the audience, will Gumraah impress the moviegoers? Let’s find out…
On a rainy night, a murder happens of a person called Aakash Sardana. Inspector Shivani Mathur ( Mrunal Thakur ) is assigned to investigate this crime and following the intricacies and every minute detail at the crime scene, she finds out the prime accused of the murder, who is Arjun Saigal ( Aditya Roy Kapur ) a civil engineer.
While Shivani and her team are now making efforts to find out more evidence on the murder, on the same night lookalike of Arjun named Sooraj Rana aka Ronnie comes in jail for hitting a cop. Now this leads to the police team in a fix. While ACP Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy) wants to make sure that Arjun should get convicted for this murder because of his past animosity with him, Shivani goes all out to find evidence again Ronnie because she hates his behaviour towards her.
But who is the real murderer and what is the main motivation behind it? For that, you need to watch Gumraah on the big screen.
Talking about star performances, Aditya Roy Kapur delivers a sincere performance and plays both characters in a convincing manner. Mrunal Thakur is decent while Vedika’s charming presence lights up the screen. Ronit Roy once again proves his versatility as he plays the role of ACP Yadav with ease and finesse.
While the story with solid twists and turns looks exciting, the film lacked the gripping and pacey screenplay, which would have taken Gumraah to another level. Also, the songs (though only a few) seem to be unnecessary as it never progresses the narrative. Despite its flaws, Gumraah is a decent entertainer with some thrilling elements.
Rating: 3 (out of 5 stars)

Gumraah Movie review: Muddled narrative, sleepwalking
Gumraah Movie
This seems to be the year of Hindi remakes of South Indian hits, what with every Friday release banking heavily on either the original box office successes of Tamil or Telugu films.
This seems to be the year of Hindi remakes of South Indian hits, what with every Friday release banking heavily on either the original box office successes of Tamil or Telugu films. This week, after the official remake of 'Bholaa' last week, comes 'Gumraah', a yet another Hindi remake of the Tamil film, 'Thadam'.
As per the credits, 'Gumraah', helmed by debutant director Vardhan Ketkar, is a crime thriller and is based on several real-life stories of two identical twins from around the world. For a thriller to engage audiences for two and a half hours, the storyline itself must be interesting, and on that count, the film has a very fascinating premise.
A man wearing a hooded raincoat rings the bell of an apartment where a young man Akash is seen working on his laptop. As Akash opens the door, the man forcibly enters and stabs him multiple times, leaving him dead within minutes. Inspector Shivani Mathur (Mrunal Thakur) is assigned to investigate the murder, and she gets down to her "academy-based research and enquiry" right from the word go.
It doesn't take her long to identify the man who's the prime suspect, and within no time Arjun Bhatnagar (Aditya Roy Kapur) is arrested. His arrest is based on the evidence provided by a young couple who happened to be clicking selfies on the terrace of the apartment opposite to the one where the murder took place. One of their pictures shows the suspected murderer from a distance and upon zooming it, Arjun's face can be clearly identified.
As Arjun gets locked up in prison, Shivani's senior, ACP Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy), gets to know that a look-alike of Arjun named Ronnie (Aditya, again) has been nabbed by the cops for a petty crime. Both Arjun and Ronnie are brought in and investigated without their knowledge of each other's existence. The two lookalike suspects, who don't know about each other are a mystery as much to themselves as they are for the police.
The story then moves ahead with two teams getting down to unearthing the backgrounds of both Arjun and Ronnie. Interestingly, as more details emerge about the two men, matters get more complicated for Shivani, especially when she uncovers new facts about the case. Inspector Yadav interrogates Ronnie, who cites different laws to escape torture.
What follows is a mish-mash of several evidence-based twists that leave us more confused than enlightened. At times, there are unnecessary turns that digress from the primary probe and stall proceedings. A few songs and a romantic angle have been thrown in for good measure to further mystify an already muddled narrative.
But the worst of the lot is the justification that director Vardhan Ketkar and writers Aseem Arora and Magizh Thirumeni offer about the incidents/murders allegedly committed by identical twins worldwide. As per the factual details provided in the film, when brothers are principal suspects, they have often been exonerated because of insufficient evidence.
For a crime thriller, Gumraah's screenplay is so dull that at every moment of its 127 minutes one wonders which way it is headed. A back story about twin brothers and their hapless childhood is added as an afterthought and even that doesn't add up much to salvage the sudden awkward surprises that one is subjected to.
Aditya Roy Kapur sleepwalks his roles, while occasionally springing into action during the fight scenes. Thakur as the no-nonsense cop presents such a staid image of herself that she almost look robotic.
Cinematography by Vineet Malhotra is nothing to write home about either, and the musical score by Ketan Sodha and the songs, credited to Mithoon, Vishal Mishra, Tanishk Bagchi and Abhijit Vaghani, are not even hummable. Perhaps, there was no scope for songs to be included in a drama supposedly laden with suspense.
Post-Covid, it takes such an effort to plan an outing and go all the way to a theatre to watch a film. And if even for a film with a decent budget and good performers, one has to sit through a dreary and lacklustre experience, it's nothing short of a criminal waste of time.
