98. #Hero (2021 ‧ Action ‧ Kannada • Zee5) #OkayWatch - I had a great expectation on this film after watching the trailer, the team behind the film and the way how they made the film in the remote estate during the lockdown. But the film is such a great disappointment. Not to demotivate the team but it looked like few friends with an access to expensive gears made the slow motion film just for fun with no logic, no script, okayish direction and below-average editing and released it on OTT. Initial plot is gripping and I thought film will get into the better mode but I was constantly confused between the genre - comedy or thriller!!!

'Hero' review: A rare attempt at black comedy in Kannada cinema
It is not often that one gets to see a Kannada film that explores the dark comedy genre. Directors usually shy away from dealing with this genre as it requires loads of creative scriptwriting and most often, appeals only to a certain type of audience.
If you are one of those who can recognize humour, wrapped in the dark cloak of violence or nestled in the gentle arms of love, then Hero is for you.
The tagline loosely translates to ‘You can’t be a hero without being a coward, words by George Bernand Shaw.
Call Hero a dark romance, a love tale with twists, or a violence-filled film and you wouldn’t be wrong. But the dark humour shines through the circumstances that the characters (they don’t have names) face up against.
There is trouble in love paradise, and the protagonist, a hairdresser (Rishab Shetty) reenters his ex-girlfriend’s (Ganavi Laxman) life with the intention to take revenge on her for dumping him.
But he changes his mind looking at her situation, deciding to help her cover her wrong deeds. How he rescues himself and his love from all the clutches forms the crux of this action-comedy-adventure.
Once the plot is sprung, the movie devolves into a tale of emotions, guns, bloodshed, and battles, Result, they run into chaos, puzzling coincidences, and face off against mounting troubles.
The second half of the movie builds upon the cat and mouse chase that the protagonist and the heroine have to undergo. The movie, shot during the pandemic, has garnered a lot of attention.
It is a brave attempt by debutant director Bharath Raj M. Rishab Shetty is an artiste always open to experimenting and the film pans out as a humorous thriller. Chikamagaluru serves as the backdrop with a single house in this idyllic location forming a large part of the film.
The director forsook character building for wit and murders happen at random. The narration doesn’t really ask for much in the way of characters too, as the fast-paced story keeps you occupied.
Rishab delivers a one-of-a-kind performance and we see the desire in his eyes, to help his lost love. For the heroine, it is about much more than getting back to an old beau.
She uses Rishab to extricate herself from the emotional wreck she is in and Ganavi Laxman portrays the role to perfection.
Music director Ajaneesh Loknath’s perfect background score, and cinematographer Arvind Kashyap’s picturisation are good choices and gel well with the director’s vision. Hero, in essence, is a comedy filled with love, pain, anger, doubt, and hope. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Hero movie review: Rishab Shetty, Ganavi Laxman are gloriously over-the-top in a riot of comedy, action and romance
It’s difficult to summarise the exact story of Hero; but when you leave the theatre, you feel like thanking the makers for giving you a hearty laugh, even if from behind a mask.
Language: Kannada
You know a film is working when you root for what’s happening on screen despite two intervals, one introduced by the theatre, at a most inopportune moment. This, when even one interval is one too many for a genre-defying film high on life, love, and laughter and action.
This is a film where you’ll come back speaking of the ‘hero’, ‘heroine’, ‘doctor’ and ‘villain’, because no one is ever referred to by name! That the team of Hero had fun making the film is evident as scene after scene unfolds, held together by great performances, smart writing and some out-of-the-world background score by Ajaneesh Loknath. When was the last time the villain (Pramod Shetty doing very effective Pramod Shetty things) was introduced to a deeply addictive classical score?
At its heart, Hero is the love story of a gloriously over-the-top Rishab Shetty and Ganavi Laxman, who plays a dignified woman with a spine of steel caught in an abusive marriage and who still finds a reason to smile — this core has a grand scaffolding of hand-to-hand action (national award-winning stunt choreographer Vikram Mor and Rishab Shetty) and dark humour. A love torn apart by circumstances resurfaces during a very strange night, and the orchestra for those aching glances, tender half-smiles and the quiet understanding are gunfire, bombs being hurled, a chase led by a panting dog, and blood-hungry men out on the prowl. Oh, there’s a pet crocodile with digestive issues too — it refuses to eat, and that makes the villain very, very sad.
His den is the Ashokavana estate, and it’s easy to draw parallels between the villain and Ravana and the heroine and Seetha. Only, here instead of an emissary like Hanuman, the hero himself goes to bring back his love.
The characters have hearts, but are practical. She is upset he did not leave a movie half-way for her. He stayed because he paid extra for a balcony ticket. A veterinarian (Anirudh Mahesh) torn between possible death at the hands of the villains or death by hunger chooses the former, and gets ready to pare open a huge jackfruit, but only after tapping a few to check if one is ripe enough. Even in the end, he’s in character. There are dead people around, a croc on the prowl, but the cook has made biryani. Of course, he stays back for food!
Each character has a quirk that’s celebrated on screen. Kiran Kinna is the cook who seems to know yet not really know. He yearns to keep narrating his not-very-successful attempts at love, even as he lives amid men who don’t hesitate to mow down people or butterflies.
One of the henchmen, a well-built man with the voice of a baby, is all brute power, but if push comes to shove — he’d prefer chasing a wild boar through the forest even when the man he’s tasked to stop is right in front of him.
These people make Hero come alive. Add to this potent mix Rishab, who’s having a dream run on screen. In this movie alone, he’s an angry ex-lover, a tipsy barber, a repentant former boyfriend, someone who can handle being beaten but cannot see his love being injured, and a person who cannot resist a wise-crack, or a bottle or two of liquor.
Ganavi’s eyes and face draw you into her misery — she’s athigae (sister-in-law) to all, but has no one to bat for her who gets beaten black and blue for everything, till she draws strength from a sizzling cooker!
The film has been written by Bharath Raj and Anirudh Mahesh. Rishab Shetty, the lead actor and producer, is one of the co-writers. The verbal punches keep landing, one after the other, and it takes good writing to make you laugh in the middle of a gruesome scene. I’ll just stop with saying this has something to do with the crocodile.
There are very many strands, and each of them is tied neatly to the other. A film can celebrate mad-cap humour, but it needs a neat foundation to build it on, and Hero gets that right. Credit to debut director Bharath Raj for keeping a tight rein on the proceedings. He also does double duty as a henchman. Quite looking forward to his next work.
The past year has been surreal, and Hero is also therapy for the eyes. The place where it was shot during the COVID-19 lockdown — Chikkamagaluru — has been captured in all its misty green glory by cinematographer Arvind S Kashyap. The vast expanse frees you up in so many ways.
If someone asks you what’s the story, it’s difficult to narrate. But, if someone asks you if you had a good time watching Hero , you’d nod vigorously. Right at the beginning, a card reads: ‘Thanks For Coming To The Theatre’. When you leave, you feel like thanking them for giving you a chance to laugh, even if through a mask.
PS: Bharath has ensured you’ll never ever look at a pressure cooker weight the same way again!
PPS: The heroes were also the 50-odd audience in the hall who stayed masked up!

Hero Review: Flimsy Story, Wacky Narrative
Movie: Hero Rating: 2.25/5 Banner: Amar Raja Media Cast: Ashok Galla, Nidhhi Agerwal, Jagapathi Babu, Naresh, Vennela Kishore, Brahmaji, Satya, and others Dialogue: A R Tagore & Kalyan Shankar Music: Ghibran Director of Photography: Sameer Reddy, Richard Prasad Editor: PrawinPudi Art: A Ramanjaneyulu Producer: Padmavathi Galla Written and Directed by: Sriram Adittya Release Date: Jan 15, 2022
Mahesh Babu’s nephew Ashok Galla debuted with “Hero”, which hit the theaters today.
Let’s find out whether this new star has any promise.
Story: Arjun (Ashok Galla) aspires to become a movie hero, but he fails to go beyond auditions. One day, his girlfriend Subbu (Nidhhi Agerwal) tells him that his hair has begun to recede and he needs to become a movie star as early as possible.
He books hair oil products online, but receives a gun instead, due to a mix-up of addresses. He also receives a photo asking him to kill that person. On the other hand, Subbu’s father (Jagapathi Babu) is dead against her relationship with Arjun. All these mix up and turn Arjun’s life upside down.
Artistes’ Performances: Ashok Galla makes his debut with a role, which is similar to his real-life – an aspiring actor. It is designed specifically for him as it provides an opportunity to showcase himself as the actor from the family of maternal grandfather Superstar Krishna and Mahesh Babu.
Nidhhi Agerwal gets a raw deal. Neither does her role have a substance, nor does she get much screen time or songs.
Satya, Vennela Kishore, and Brahmaji provide some cliched laughs.
Jagapathi Babu gets a lengthy role, which is completely different from what he has done so far. Ravi Kishan makes no impact.
Technical Excellence: One thing that is noticeable throughout the film is lavish production values. For a flimsy story, the producer has spent a lot of money.
Cinematography by Richard Prasad and Sameer Reddy is a valuable addition to the making of the movie. But no care has been taken to music.
The film doesn’t have songs (except remix number) in the second half at all. Ghibran has given forgettable tunes, but his background score is decent enough.
Highlights: Rich production values Twists and turns
Drawback: Non-serious approach Uninteresting romantic thread Drags on with a flimsy story Over the top scenes
Analysis “Hero”, as the title suggests, revolves around a wannabe actor. The film begins as a comedy, with some interesting sequences.
Ashok Galla is introduced in a cowboy getup, a tribute to Mahesh Babu’s ‘Takkari Donga’. Then we get to see romantic scenes on Nidhhi and Ashok Galla, along with the sequences of the hero going to various auditions. They provide time-pass moments. Then comes the big turn when the hero receives a gun through a parcel, switching the film into a thriller genre.
The first half of the film holds the interest as it effortlessly switches from comedy to romantic movie to a thriller.
But director Sriram Adittya, whose previous films also went in a similar fashion mixing thriller elements with comedy, loses his grip on the narrative once the mystery about the gun is unfolded. From here, the film turns into more of a spoof than a thriller or comedy. The spoofs may provide a chuckle but are lengthy and repetitive.
Many scenes in the film border on silliness. When the twist in the story of Jagapathi Babu is revealed, Naresh says, “inta ghoramaina flashback naa jeevithamlo vinaledu choodaledu”. That sums up how bad the twist is.
Director Sriram Adittya should have given coherence to his wacky ideas. That is a major drawback.
The film has some engaging moments in the first half and hilarious situations. Also, a twist to Ajay’s role, Brahmaji’s comedy (a spoof on ‘senior hero’ and Boyapati), and a couple of twists show Sriram Aditya’s style of clever writing. But his penchant to trivialize everything for the sake of entertainment has worked against the soul of the story.
When the film is all about launching a star kid, more sequences should have been written to showcase his talent, and better romantic sequences between the lead pair should have been added to get connected to the current generation of audiences. Ashok Galla is the son of famous businessman Jay Galla and nephew of Mahesh Babu. For him, it may be a safe launch, but the film doesn’t highlight his strengths.
All in all, “Hero” is a mix of comedy, parody, and action thriller. While some comedy portions have worked out, the film goes on with a non-serious approach throughout.
Bottom line: Mix-up

Hero Movie Review: Sivakarthikeyan’s film has interesting premise, but let down by execution
Director ps mithran’s hero starring sivakarthikeyan, abhay deol and kalyani priyadarshan tries to explore the flaws in the education system in india. the film does it but fails to convey it in an engaging manner devoid of clichés..
Listen to Story
Sivakarthikeyan meteoric rise from being an anchor to a Tamil cinema hero is inspiring. With his recent release, which is titled Hero, he just took it up a notch by choosing a superhero flick. While the film, directed by PS Mithran, had an interesting premise, the execution was unimpressive, full of clichés and illogical loopholes.
Shakthi (Sivakarthikeyan), along with his sidekick Ink (Robo Shankar) own a printing press that produces fake degree certificates. Shakthi thinks that he is engaging in this illegal activity as a mark of protest against the education system which fails to recognise talented individuals. On the other hand, there is Moorthy (Arjun) who is the Tamil version of Aamir Khan’s character from 3 Idiots, but with serious intentions to change the education system.
And then there’s Mahadev (Abhay Deol), one of the influential people in the city who believes in producing educated labourers’ than encouraging young minds and their innovation. What happens when these three characters meet forms the crux of Hero.
PS Mithran’s debut film Irumbu Thirai addressed the perils of technology. With his second flick Hero, he delves deep into the problems that students and parents face in the education system. From the capitation fees to fake degree certificates to corruption and bribery, he’s covered it all. All these issues either appear as scenes or as voice-overs.
With every interesting idea, Mithran throws at us, there are a couple of over-the-top scenes that ruin the experience. For example, Shakthi had to safeguard four children from Mahadev and gang. How they ended up together makes up for an interesting watch. But, in a scene, the director shows that Shakthi and team launch a satellite without anyone knowing. No, we’re not kidding.
It is these exaggerated sequences that constantly make the audience question Mithran’s pure intentions. In both his films, his strength lies in building up characters. He does it best with Hero as well by etching great characters for both Sivakarthikeyan and Arjun. But, for Abhay Deol, not so much.
Arjun’s role is an extended version of his iconic character in Shankar’s Gentleman. He is a vigilante masquerading as a teacher who doesn’t believe in textbook teaching. Particularly, his flashback portions create a much-needed impact on the story of Hero.
Sivakarthikeyan as Shakthi is a perfect fit for Hero as he nails his expressions, emotions and stunts too. Yet, it becomes extremely difficult for the audience to look past the clichés. Arjun, in his role, has performed exceptionally well.
Kalyani Priyadarshan plays a motivational speaker named Meera. While she performed her role with ease, her character didn't add any substance to the film. Ivana, who proved her mettle as an actress in Bala's Nachiyaar, has appeared in a brief yet impactful role in Hero, which sets the tone for the film.
Abhay Deol makes his Tamil debut with Hero and his lip-sync is better than most of the heroines. While it’s okay to show a powerful antagonist, it is always necessary to look through the tall claims the screenplay suggests. Throughout the film, Abhay Deol and gang appear as men who destroy the livelihood of young talents who invent machines to make people’s lives easy. And they are also shown as the men who can trace and track anyone within a few minutes. If only these men concentrated on inventing something on their own. If only.
One of the highpoints of Hero is its cinematography by George Williams. The framing and use of colours set the tone for the film. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs and background music failed to elevate the important moments.
The main grouse in Hero is that it was promoted as a superhero film and there were hardly any superhero elements in the film. The whole process of the superhero character creation was interesting to watch on screen. Sadly, it wasn’t put to good use.
Hero had all the potential to become a proper superhero film sensible to Tamil cinema standards. But, the lumbering narrative (in a few portions), exaggerated scenes and illogical loopholes ruin the entire experience.
2.5 stars out of 5 for Hero.

The rest of the plot deals with these.
Star Performance
Rishab is excellent and he impresses the audience with beautiful emotions and body language. Ganavi makes her silver screen debut and has done justice to the given role. Pramod Shetty and Manjunath did what is asked.
The dark comedy entertainer is a well-cooked food with essential ingredients. The characters are written well and the stars are placed rightly. Bharath makes a stunning debut as a director and receives appreciation from the audience. With the neat black comedy script, one could not control the laughter. The first half is neat and impressive and the second half comes with some good sequences and comedy. The music composition by Ajaneesh is just fantastic and so does the cinematography by Arvind Kashyap.
What’s There?
- Neat storyline and good direction
- Perfect selection of artists and their exemplary performances
What’s Not There?
- Nothing big as a negative except for a few minor flaws
Rishab Shetty rocks once again as an actor with his natural performance. The film is really a fun-filled ride and can definitely be suggested!

Watched Saramsha today!<br/>Great job Surya Vasishta <br/>A very nicely crafted movie. <br/>The acting of everyone was very natural. It took time to buy into the context of the movie. <br/>Once I was in...I started liking the depth of the story and characters. <br/>Realised that the confusion that is there at the beginning of the movie is deliberately created to get them untangled gradually. <br/>The acting of everyone was marvelous. As I like acting that does not look like acting. <br/>I was wondering how he would end the movie ?<br/>But the mother's story gave the right opportunity for closure.<br/>Songs were really melodious and woven into the story.<br/>Still thinking about the movie. <br/>Submit for national awards.

10/10. Amazing BGM Score & Great Camera Work & Editing. aravindkamath 21 March 2021. First of all I am giving this movie 10 /10. For below reasons. 1) Very unique BGM score and sound mixing 2) Very amazing visuals & cinematography 3) Very steady camera work, Especially in chasing.
The second half of the movie builds upon the cat and mouse chase that the protagonist and the heroine have to undergo. The movie, shot during the pandemic, has garnered a lot of attention. It is a ...
Hero Movie Review: A rare attempt at black comedy in Kannada cinema. This Rishab Shetty-starrer is equal parts a dark romance, a love tale with twists, and a violence-filled film. It is not often that one gets to see a Kannada film that explores the dark comedy genre. Filmmakers usually shy away from this genre as it requires loads of creative ...
The movie is technically superior, with Yuvan's background score and George C Williams' visuals, and Siva Karthikeyan and Arjun are sure to keep you entertained whenever they're on screen.
With Hero, Mithran — who gave us a good thriller in Irumbu Thirai last year — liberally borrows cinematic tropes that we would generally associate with Shankar, but still manages to give us a ...

Hero Movie Review. The first look of the trailer, this movie has lots of expectations from the audience and also it has created a huge hype. In the interior of Karnataka, this movie has taken place, against the unlikely backdrop in the mafia's house. It is a 'Bloody' entertaining movie and lives up to the expectation.

The director had hinted in a pre-release interview that 'Hero' has traces of dark comedy. This one is more of a crime comedy where the co-incidences tickle the funny bone.

The main grouse in Hero is that it was promoted as a superhero film and there were hardly any superhero elements in the film. The whole process of the superhero character creation was interesting to watch on screen. Sadly, it wasn't put to good use. Hero had all the potential to become a proper superhero film sensible to Tamil cinema standards.
