Introduction: “Incredible India” and “Make in India” are both government campaigns launched by the Indian Government for the economic benefit of the country. ‘Incredible India’ was unleashed in the year 2002 with a view to promote tourism in India. This campaign was globally conducted by showing India as an amazing tourist destination. As India has a myriad culture, traditions and a wide diversity from Kashmir in the north to Kanyakumari in the South.‘Make in India’ was started by Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 with a view to encourage companies to produce, manufacture, develop and innovate products in India itself. By this, job creation was generated for 25 economic sectors in thecountry. Standards of high quality are maintained and the environmental impact of goods manufacturing were minimized.

Incredible India (a brief overview): Tourism has always been a source of income for many countries. As India is a land of diversities, with an extravagant heritage and a mosaic of cultures, the country count as one of the most popular tourist destinations of the world. India is the 7 th largest country in the world, separated by the mountains and the sea. This gives India a definite geographical entity.India is a potent blend of old and new- starting from the heritage buildings to the luxurious shopping malls and gigantic hotels. Taking that as a concern, the government of India in 2002 started as campaign ‘Incredible India’ to encourage tourism in India. Actress Priyanka Chopra and the colossal actor Amitabh Bachchan were the ambassadors of this campaign to promote Incredible India. The destinations that popularized this campaign are Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi etc. In terms of the expenditure data, it is noted that the foreign tourists spend US$372 million in the year 2005 (fourth quarter – October to December). India as become the rapid growing market in terms of international tourist expenditure in the Asia- Pacific zone.

Make in India (a brief overview): Prime Minister Narendra Modi unleashed the Make in India campaign in 2014.  He said that all 121-crore people of India will take part in this program and make India economically Independent. The objective of this mission was to create job opportunities for the unemployed and skill boosting. This initiative captivated capital investment only in India. Owing to this, 49% FDI and 100% in the infrastructure of railway was allowed by the Indian cabinet. Make In India mission concentrated on the 25 economic sectors. These sectors are defence manufacturing, automobile components, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, railways, highway, textile, garments, media, mining, oil and gas, entertainment, tourism, thermal power, hospitality, electronic system and others. “Zero defect, zero effect” was the slogan raised by our PM during this campaign. This implies that India uses advanced technologies and mechanism to initiate the production causing no environmental hazards. At present Haryana, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Odisha showed high signs of improvement by this campaign. As for instance, Lockheed Martin announced to manufacture F-16 in India. Dalian Wanda Group announced to construct industrial city. Micromax has three manufacturing units in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan. Aramco signed a deal with India to set up oil refinery of $44 billion.

Conclusion: To conclude, we can say that Incredible India and Make in India are the campaigns with similar aims i.e., to bring about economic development in India. Their aim is to make India economically self sufficient so that it stands out separate among all the other nations of the world. By these campaigns, unemployment could be eradicated to some extent. Many got employed in the tourism industry and others in the industries that were set by the influence of Make in India. India, in future can make significant progress if the government comes up with more such campaigns.

India is a great country where people speak different languages but the national language is Hindi. India is full of different castes, creeds, religion, and cultures but they live together. That’s the reasons India is famous for the common saying of “ unity in diversity “. India is the seventh-largest country in the whole world.

Geography and Culture

India has the second-largest population in the world. India is also knowns as Bharat, Hindustan and sometimes Aryavart. It is surrounded by oceans from three sides which are Bay Of Bengal in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west and Indian oceans in the south. Tiger is the national animal of India. Peacock is the national bird of India. Mango is the national fruit of India. “ Jana Gana Mana ” is the national anthem of India . “Vande Mataram” is the national song of India. Hockey is the national sport of India. People of different religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism , Jainism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism lives together from ancient times. India is also rich in monuments, tombs, churches, historical buildings, temples, museums, scenic beauty, wildlife sanctuaries , places of architecture and many more. The great leaders and freedom fighters are from India.

The first color that is uppermost color in the flag which is the saffron color, stands for purity. The second color i.e. the middle color in the flag is the white color and it stands for peace. The third color that is the lowest color in the flag is the green color and it stands for fertility. The white color has an Ashoka Chakra of blue color on it. Ashoka Chakra contains twenty-four spokes which are equally divided. India has 29 states and 7 union territories.

Rajasthan itself has a glorious history. It is famous for many brave kings, their deeds, and their art and architecture. It has a sandy track that’s why the nuclear test was held here. Rajasthan is full of desert, mountain range, lakes, dense forest, attractive oases, and temples, etc. Rajasthan is also known as “Land Of Sacrifice”. In Rajasthan, you can see heritage things of all the kings who ruled over there and for that, you can visit Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Chittaurgarh, etc.

Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is bigger than a foreign (Italy) country and smaller than Oman. It also has tourists attractions for its places. In Madhya Pradesh, you can see temples, lakes, fort, art and architecture, rivers, jungles, and many things. You can visit in Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Bhopal, Gwalior and many cities. Khajuraho, Sanchi Stupa, Pachmarhi, Kanha national park, Mandu, etc. are the places must visit.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir are known as heaven on earth . We can also call Jammu and Kashmir as Tourists Paradise. India has 28 states and seven territories and in every state, you will find unique and special cuisine native to that particular state and UT. Starting from the hills of Kashmir to the plains of Punjab, you will find diverse food culture everywhere.

India is one of the most diverse countries in the world, so much so that is often referred to as a subcontinent. It can have different cultures, languages, cuisines, rulers, beliefs, etc. in as little as a difference of about a hundred kilometers.

The history of India extends from a time in past that no one knows is how old. The human settlement of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa civilization emerged in the banks of the Indus River, which today lies in Punjab and Sindh areas of modern day Pakistan, once a part of India. Historians predict the migration of the Aryans to this part of the continent in around 1500 BC to about 500 BC.

However, certain communities still exist in India that are believed to be even older than the Aryans. They are the tribal natives of the subcontinent of India. This was the time of Alexander the Great . After this, the Maurya empire rose to prominence under the rule of Chandragupta Maurya . However, even at this time, India was not consolidated in the way we know today.

It was divided between various kings who had their own kingdoms – like the Cholas and Pandyans in the south, Pataliputra, Amravati etc estates. After this, several invasions occurred to the Indian subcontinent by Muhammad Ghori after the death of which, his help, Qutb-ud-din Aibak became the ruler of the Delhi sultanate and thus began the reign of the slave dynasty.

This was overturned by the Mughal Rulers who finally gave India the shape we know today. Under the Mughal rule, India were in length and breadth and culturally as well. They brought with them numerous species of fruits and flowers, gardening techniques, language, literature and cuisine which till today endears to our taste buds.

They built grand monuments across India. Most of them were communally open and tolerant at a time when Europe was bleeding with religious holy wars.

Then came the era of the British looters who wiped off all our wealth to enrich their own country. They enslaved us and divided us. Their seeds of communal split was so effectively planted on our soil, that till now we face the problems of communal intolerance.  

Climatic Diversity

India has an extraordinarily diverse climate with snowy north in Ladakh to scorching desserts of Rajasthan; to pleasant backwaters of Kanyakumari to the hilly North-east; and to draught laden Maharashtra to the beaches of Goa. There is no other country perhaps in the whole universe where such diversity can be observed. As a result of this, a variety of crops can also be grown in India that is not possible anywhere in the world.  

Diverse Communities 

India is synonymous to diversity. It is home to more than two thousand ethic groups, over 22 registered languages, and more than 645 tribal groups including Bhil, Naga, Chakma, Bhotia, Muria, etc. India has four major religions namely – Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Christianity.

Several other religions like the Paris, Buddhist and Jain community also peacefully coexist. India is truly incredible in its diversity where it is possible for a Sikh man to be the prime minister with a Muslim man as a President and A Hindu leader of opposition. Such is our unity in diversity.  

Science and Technology 

In the field of science and technology too, India is such a wonder. It has produced several of the world’s most well known in this field. India is not just a land of snake charmers as believed by the ignorant today. To name a few scientific minds:  

• Aryabhatta  – the great scientist of ancient India was the one who invented the digit zero ‘0’, without which the whole world couldn’t have done any of the calculations that we are capable of today. Even basic commercial mathematics requires the use of zero.  
• India has also produced several Nobel laureates, one of which, Sir Ronald Ross, had found the cure for the then deadly malaria disease.  
• Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian to have landed on the moon along with the NASA crew in the revolutionary as well as tragic Apollo mission.  
• Rabindranath Tagore , one of India’s greatest literary minds had also won the Nobel prize. He won the Nobel prize for exemplary contribution to the field of human literature in the year 1913  
• Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – the former president as well as the ‘Missile Man’ of India was instrumental in the development of the Space launch Vehicles (SLV) and also had a major role in bringing India to the Nuclear weapons horizon at par with many other nations in the world.  

Nuclear Capability

Today, India is one of the most powerful of all developing countries with estimated nuclear warhead of about 120 in number (non-corroborated). Several other weapons of mass destruction (WMD) have been created by India all of which are nuclear in nature. In 1999, India possessed an estimated 800 kilograms of Plutonium which could be utilized in about 1000 nuclear bombs.

India is also not a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1968 and thus does not have any obligation for complete nuclear disarmament. India has often argued that the NPT is like a suicidal policy for the smaller nuclear powers.

The large powers of the world convince them for disarmament while they themselves retain some warheads. This leads to a dangerous situation where one party has nuclear weapons and other does not thus worsening the situation and defeating the purpose of the treaty.  

India is truly an incredible land with its unique culture, traditions, clothing, food and many more. Its culture is extremely inclusive and is known to have adopted qualities from all cultures of the world.

English, a foreign language has most number of speakers in India; India has the third largest army in the world; it possesses the second most number of nuclear warheads in the world. It is home to innumerable cultures and ethnic groups.

From the moment that one sets foot in India to be greeted by a graceful Namaste, a gesture that denotes both welcome and respect, one is on his Way to the most rewarding experience of his life.

India is a land of fascination! Millions of tourists from all parts of the world find contentment in the exhilarating mountains, beautiful Kashmir, the soothing backwaters at Kerala, the golden & tranquil beaches, the enchanting waterfalls, the vast Indo-Gangetic plains and lush tropical jungles teeming with wildlife; the countless exquisite arts forms, the exotic costumes, the enchanting music and the majestic elephant rides.

India holds plenty of gems for the tourists which one would never tire of. Some of these attractions are:

Kerala — National Geographic Traveller has classified it as one of the ’50 must see destinations’ in the world. It is the land of spices and is well-known for it’s famed Ayurvedic massages.

Goa – Also known as ‘the pearl of the east’ and for its Gothic churches as well as the cashew brew called `feni’.

Palace on Wheels: On board this royal train, for seven days, relish the lifestyle of the kings of yore as one tours the majestic forts and splendid palaces of Rajasthan. The highlight of the trip is a visit to the Taj Mahal.

Kashmir, It has been likened to paradise, well known for the wooden houseboats in Dal Lake, saffron and `cashmere’ shawls. One can now enjoy vast expanses of tulip farming undertaken to attract more tourists.

There are scores of other natural, cultural and historical sites such as Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh; Corbett National Park in Uttar Pradesh; Shirnia and Kullu Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Darjeeling in West Bengal; Gangtok in Sikkim, ‘Kanchenjunga’ in the great Himalayas and the world spectacular Andaman islands, Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid, Red Fort in Delhi; Fatehpur Sikri, Meenakshi temple in Tamil Nadu; the Tirupati Balaji temple, Andhra Pradesh, Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry; Ajanta-Ellora caves, Maharashtra, etc. that adorn India.

India is also a land of varied climatic conditions. For a glimpse of where artificial intelligence is headed in election campaigns, look to India, the world’s largest democracy, as it starts heading to the polls on Friday.

An A.I.-generated version of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that has been shared on WhatsApp shows the possibilities for hyperpersonalized outreach in a country with nearly a billion voters. In the video — a demo clip whose source is unclear — Mr. Modi’s avatar addresses a series of voters directly, by name.

However, it is not perfect. Mr. Modi appears to wear two different pairs of glasses, and some parts of the video are pixelated.

Down the ladder, workers in Mr. Modi’s party are sending videos by WhatsApp in which their own A.I. avatars deliver personal messages to specific voters about the government benefits they have received and ask for their vote.

Those video messages can be automatically generated in whichever of India’s dozens of languages the voter speaks. So can phone messages by A.I.-powered chatbots that call constituents in the voices of political leaders and seek their support.

Such outreach requires a fraction of the time and money spent on traditional campaigning, and it has the potential to become an essential instrument in elections. But as the technology races onto the political scene, there are few guardrails to prevent misuse.

Chatbots and personalized videos may seem more or less harmless. Experts worry, however, that voters will have an increasingly difficult time distinguishing between real and synthetic messages as the technology advances and spreads.

“It’ll be the Wild West and an unregulated A.I. space this year,” said Prateek Waghre, the executive director of the Internet Freedom Foundation, a digital rights group based in New Delhi. The technology, he added, is entering a media landscape already polluted with misinformation.

Around the world, elections have become a testing ground for the A.I. boom. The tools have been used to turn an Argentine presidential candidate into Indiana Jones and a Ghostbuster. During the New Hampshire primary, voters received robocall messages urging them not to vote, in a voice that was most likely artificially generated to sound like President Biden’s.

And in India, Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., and the opposition Indian National Congress party have accused each other of spreading election-related deepfake content online.

One outpost on this new Indian frontier is in the western desert state of Rajasthan. On the ground floor of a residential building on a dusty back lane, a 31-year-old college dropout, Divyendra Singh Jadoun, operates an A.I. start-up, The Indian Deepfaker.

His team of nine people has been making commercials with A.I.-generated avatars of Bollywood actors and actresses. But earlier this year, political parties and politicians began asking him to do for them what he had done for celebrities. Of the 200 requests, Mr. Jadoun said, he took on 14.

Among those getting the A.I. treatment is Shakti Singh Rathore, a 33-year-old B.J.P. member. His job this election season is to tell as many people as possible about Mr. Modi’s programs and policies. So he decided to create a replica of himself.

“A.I. is wonderful and the way forward,” Mr. Rathore said as he settled in front of a video camera at the office of The Indian Deepfaker, preparing to become digitally incarnated. “How else could I reach the beneficiaries of Mr. Modi’s programs in such large numbers and in so short a period of time?”

As Mr. Rathore adjusted a saffron scarf with the party’s logo that hung around his neck, Mr. Jadoun instructed him, “Just look into the camera and talk as if the person is sitting right in front of you.”

With about five minutes’ worth of material, including an audio recording and profile shots, Mr. Jadoun went to work. He said he uses open-source A.I. systems and builds upon them with his own code.

First, Mr. Rathore’s face was isolated from each frame of the recording.

Then data was collected from his facial features, including the size of his face and lips, as well as his gaze.

Mr. Jadoun said the data set was then fed into A.I. models that learn to predict facial patterns.

“You need to keep running it through the program and fine-tuning the face until you get the best face possible,” he said.

A “cloning algorithm” also analyzed the audio recording, learning the voice’s cadence and intonations. Mr. Jadoun said it often takes six to eight hours of tweaking to perfect the face and for the lips to sync with the words. The rest is largely automated.

In one demo, it took about four minutes to create around 20 personalized greeting videos.

Mr. Jadoun said his team could produce up to 10,000 videos a day. For larger jobs on deadline, it will rent graphics processing units.

Generative A.I. can also remove language barriers, which is especially helpful in a linguistically diverse country. Mr. Rathore’s avatar can be programmed to speak regional languages to reach the remotest corners of India.

Political parties are not only texting constituents video messages but also using cloned voices to call people directly, all powered by chatbots like ChatGPT.

In the past, when a party representative would call voters, they would hang up, Mr. Rathore said. “But now, when a local leader utters a voter’s name, it immediately catches their attention.”

During the conversation, the chatbot asks about local government programs that offer free electricity or funding for start-ups. Mr. Jadoun said the calls were recorded and transcribed for quality control and A.I. training.

Mr. Rathore said he had spent around $24,000 of his own money to reach about 1.2 million people through his video messages and phone calls and to receive information about who didn’t answer. He called it an investment in his future with the B.J.P.

Nikhil Pahwa, the editor of MediaNama, which covers digital media in India, said the personalized messages could be particularly powerful among Indians.

“India is a country where people love to take photos with celebrity impersonators,” he said. “So if they receive a call from, say, the prime minister, and he speaks as if he knows them, where they live and what their issues are, they would actually be thrilled about it.”

Mr. Waghre of the Internet Freedom Foundation questions whether A.I. content is persuasive enough to affect this year’s election. But he said the long-term effects could be problematic. “Once you normalize this in people’s information diet, what happens six months later when there are deceptive videos?” he said.

Mr. Modi himself has discussed adding disclaimers to A.I.-generated content so people are not being “ misguided .” Mr. Jadoun and representatives of two other A.I. start-ups in India created what they call an “ A.I. coalition manifesto ,” pledging to protect data privacy and uphold election integrity. For instance, Indian Deepfaker videos are labeled “A.I. generated,” and its chatbots announce that they are A.I.-generated voices, Mr. Jadoun said.

Narendra Singh Bhati, 28, the owner of resorts in Rajasthan, received an A.I.-generated call from Mr. Rathore this week. Mr. Bhati said he was impressed with its personalization.

He said he had not realized that the call was A.I.-generated, although the script made that clear. “I even said goodbye to Mr. Rathore” at the end, Mr. Bhati said.

All in the Family: One Environmental Science and Policy Student’s Path to Columbia

Growing up in Santiago, Chile, Clarisa Marambio watched her two older sisters actively engage in conservation and biodiversity efforts when she was still a kid. Even then, she found herself inspired by what she saw.

Now, Marambio has followed in the family footsteps as a student in Columbia University’s M.P.A. in Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) program at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), graduating this May.

In the Q&A below, Marambio discusses her environmental policy interests, how she tailored her coursework to focus on Latin America and her most memorable experiences in the program.

What do you think is the greatest sustainability challenge?

There are numerous sustainability challenges, and one that I follow closely is the Global Plastic Treaty —an extremely complex negotiation process that some will describe as the most significant environmental agreement since the 2015 Paris Agreement. The global plastic (and microplastic) crisis demands international action. These negotiations started in late 2022 and are supposed to conclude by the close of 2024.

Sadly, there has been a rise in concerns within past negotiations, including the overrepresentation of industry representatives compared to delegates from the 70 smallest U.N. member states; the fragmentation of global efforts; and the lack of U.S. commitment to curbing plastic production and prioritizing short-term consensus over long-term sustainable solutions.

Another pressing concern for me is lithium extraction in my region. This decade is pivotal for power sector decarbonization, and Latin America’s production will determine the pace of the transition. It will be a huge challenge to safeguard our region’s environment by avoiding disproportionate benefits on one piece of the globe/country/population by exploiting the resources of another. This is why the geopolitical aspect is crucial, necessitating reliable partnerships while safeguarding profitability diversification.

What is your background and what brought you to environmental topics?

I’m from Santiago, Chile, a city with a unique geography that faces different environmental issues, such as air pollution. In fact, Santiago ranks as one of the most polluted cities. Also, living in a country that has historically relied on mining as a primary economic driver—contributing, for example, to 30% of the world’s copper—has shaped my perspective on our natural ecosystems, their exploitation and the sustainable practices that could be implemented. My passion for environmental issues also grew because of my two older sisters, Camila and Alejandra.

As an undergrad, I studied journalism and social communication, and during that time, I mostly conducted my research on water rights and mining policies. In addition to studying, I worked at a communication agency, while also supporting my sisters in the media outreach and press releases of their projects. This experience led me to my last full-time job as a sustainability and climate change consultant at Deloitte before entering the ESP program.

What made you choose ESP?

While working as a consultant at Deloitte with major companies in mining, forestry, aquaculture, energy and transport, I got to know the Chilean policies and international standards governing these industries really well. However, I felt a need for additional technical skills related to the scientific aspects of environmental issues.

So far, the program has given me the opportunity to deepen my understanding not only of environmental science but also of public administration.

What are some highlights of your experience with the program?

Meeting incredible people from all over the world has been a major highlight. There have been close friendships made here that I know I’ll keep for the rest of my life! Also, there is a genuine passion my cohort shares for environmental issues, and collaborating with them has truly been the cornerstone of my experience.

Another big highlight has been working in the Center on Global Energy Policy with Luisa Palacios , a Venezuelan professor with a career in energy, finance and policy. We’ve been analyzing mining in Latin America, its geopolitical influences and ESG practices.

The number of things you can accomplish while here is amazing. Whether it’s organizing events, panels or discussions, the ESP program, SIPA and the Climate School encourage and facilitate it all.

I’m also part of the student government of SIPA as my program’s representative, which has allowed me to support further issues and concerns.

Do you have any favorite courses so far?

The first semester brought a wave of environmental courses that correlated perfectly, creating an enjoyable learning experience. I had so much fun while diving into risk assessment and toxicology and environmental chemistry topics that we discussed in class. I’m also taking a course called “Storytelling and the Art of Creating Social Impact Campaigns” with Stephen Friedman that has been incredible. The way he teaches and the content has enlightened me in so many different ways. I’m immensely happy I took this class. 

Last but not least, the experience of getting used to seeing former Secretary Hillary Clinton in the “ Inside the Situation Room ” course every Wednesday is still surreal.

What will you take with you after the program?

The fact that I can call my classmates and friends from all over the world—Shubhi (India) for insights on energy ideas, Belén (Perú) for guidance on impact measurement, Yazan (Saudi) for advice on renewables, Jeremy (Seychelles) and Saia (US) for insights on COP and world treaties, Mina (UK) and Fritz (Germany) for creative problem-solving, Aurélie (Israel) for opinions on water resilience, Isi (Chile) for economic policy perspective and Cate (Italy) for any advice gives me confidence for whatever path I take. This support network is truly invaluable in achieving any goal. And the list could go on and on.

Any advice for someone looking to apply to this program?

Do it! While going through the program, one aspect that has given me satisfaction is consistently working on assignments, memos and essays using my specific interests—Chilean or Latin American cases and examples. This approach has allowed me to directly apply acquired skills and knowledge, making all of this experience even more meaningful. You can incorporate your own specific interests.

Isabella Madrigal has a vision: storytelling that’s compelling, inspires better, more equitable world

A family sits around a fire pit in their backyard on the Cahuilla reservation in Southern California in a scene from “Menil and Her Heart,” Isabella Madrigal’s thesis screenplay.

“Do you know who gave the arts to the Cahuilla people?” the father asks his two daughters. Menil, the youngest, says no, and the father tells the story of her namesake, Menil, the moon maiden, who “painted the world into being.”

Weaving together old family traditions of oral storytelling with modern mediums like screenwriting and acting is a skill Madrigal ’24, an English concentrator with a psychology secondary, has honed for many years.

The Adams House resident from Temecula, California, is an enrolled member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians, and of Anishinaabe, Turtle Mountain Ojibwe descent. An emerging screenwriter and actress, Madrigal has appeared in Marvel’s “Echo” (2024) TV miniseries and the show “Rutherford Falls” (2021-2022) and wants to increase Native representation onscreen and amplify overlooked voices and narratives.

“If you only have a very limited idea of who you can be — what previous media has shown — that impacts artistic creation and how you show up in the world,” Madrigal said.

It’s a different direction from where she started at Harvard. Madrigal had begun on a pre-med track, but the absence of an artistic outlet left a void. Her decision to shift her focus to arts and humanities ended up “really changing my Harvard experience,” she said.

“This idea of community- building and community-healing was always something I knew I wanted to do,” Madrigal said. “I saw an opportunity for that in medicine, but being at Harvard I’ve been able to see there are so many ways that you can engage in that kind of work.”

“I feel very different than when I came into Harvard. I have a better understanding of what I want to do and what values I have in a career space.”

Her favorite classes included “ Indigenous Sci Fi, Horror, Fantasy, and Futurisms ,” with Associate Professor of English Christopher Pexa , and “The Essay Film” with Assistant Professor Sky Hopinka in the Art, Film, and Visual Studies Department . While an undergraduate, Madrigal has participated in the Harvard-Radcliffe Dramatic Club and Natives at Harvard College .  

“As one of the vice presidents of Natives at Harvard College, Isabella is a leader in our community,” said Jordan Clark, assistant director of the Harvard University Native American Program. “Creating space for new students to find community, providing programming, and always showing up to support other students when they need it — she plays an important role as a mentor and role model.”

Madrigal’s senior thesis screenplay, a genre-bending family drama full of magical realism, centers the issues of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and two-spirit people.

When teenage Menil suddenly goes missing, her devastated family is met with indifference from local law enforcement. Older sister Nesune travels to a parallel universe to search for her, and there she discovers all the Cahuilla stories from her memory are real.

For Madrigal, who has been developing the story since age 16, the screenplay is a way to raise awareness about a crisis. The National Crime Information Center noted 5,712 reports of missing Native women and girls in 2016, and a 2018 report by the Urban Indian Health Institute identified 506 missing and murder cases across 71 U.S. cities. Abigail Echo-Hawk, the report’s co-author, was one of Madrigal’s mentors during the project.

“Theater has an incredible capacity to engage audience members and actors with social issues, inspire hope, and incite change,” said Madrigal, who hopes to one day see the screenplay become a feature film.

Madrigal staged an early play version of “Menil and Her Heart” in high school, starring her sister Sophia Madrigal ’26 and their father, Luke Madrigal.

Luke, who was instrumental in preserving the tradition of Cahuilla bird singing, passed away four months before Isabella started at Harvard. For the oldest daughter, much of her work is about honoring his legacy.

“Some of the strongest memories I have are doing that [play] together,” Madrigal said. “This project feels like it’s so wrapped up in him, which is why I see it continuing with me for so long.”

Madrigal got experience with Native-directed projects through roles in the small-town sitcom “Rutherford Falls,” filmed during sophomore winter recess, and in “Echo” the summer before her junior year. In “Echo” she played a younger version of the superhero’s grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal) in a flashback scene of a dramatic birth.

“It was top secret. I didn’t have the script until a couple days before,” Madrigal recalled. “I’ve never given birth! I was asking everybody — my mom, my aunts — if they could share any tips.”

Madrigal said she has been thrilled to see more Native projects in recent years.

“Without that surge, which was decades in the making by native creators, I wouldn’t have been able to have these roles,” Madrigal said. “Native script writers and directors open up opportunities for so many more people.”

An essential part of filmmaking, Madrigal said, is working with communities to tell their stories in a responsible way, a skill she cultivated in the Harvard class “ Get Real: The Art of Community-Based Film,” with associate senior lecturer on screenwriting Musa Syeed , who was also Madrigal’s thesis adviser.

“Part of the responsibility of telling that story requires conversations with culture bearers, with elders,” Madrigal said. “For me, that looked like talking through the story with people, sharing intention.”

After Commencement, Madrigal plans to shoot “Menil and Her Heart” as a short with the help of a Culture Bearer grant she was awarded by the Center for Cultural Power and the California Arts Council .

“I feel very different than when I came into Harvard,” Madrigal said. “I have a better understanding of what I want to do and what values I have in a career space. I planned on confronting my absent father about his parenting. But when I asked to hear his side, I learned a powerful lesson.

• My father was absent throughout most of my life, so I went to Ghana to confront him about it. 
• In Ghana, I learned about my father's past and understood his perspective for the first time. 
• Although we will never be close, the conversation healed our relationship and taught me empathy. 

A few years ago, I visited my father in Ghana and asked to hear his story about why he was an absent parent . This conversation helped me heal, forgive, and transform how I view disagreements today.

At the time, I had a lot of built-up resentment and anger toward my dad. In my mind, he stopped making a meaningful effort to see me or show up for me after he remarried. He and his new family lived in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Finland — while my mom, my brother, and I initially struggled with being unhoused and being on welfare here in the US.

I dealt with a lot of feelings of rejection , which I'd reflected on and worked through in therapy during my 20s. But in my 30s, it all came back, and I needed to deal with it head-on.

I decided to meet with my father to talk things through

There were times when I'd be driving, and I'd find myself weeping, questioning what I'd done to cause him not to fight for me. It was clear his rejection of me was still affecting the way I move about the world.

During a leadership training program, my cohort and I discussed our origins. I shared with the cohort that I had an upcoming trip to Ghana, and I had plans to confront my father.

Politely, a cohort member raised their hand. "Hey, what would it look like if you took a different approach?" he asked. "We all have empathy for each other because we know each other's stories."

I felt my heart rate quicken and my jaw clench in defensiveness. Despite my defensiveness, his words planted a seed that I brought up with my therapist. Together, my therapist and I started preparing for how I would turn my "confrontation" into a "conversation" with my father.

When the time came for my kids and me to travel to Ghana, I asked my father for one-on-one time and broached the topic.

"Hey, Dad, I never really heard your story. What was life like growing up for you, and what happened between us?"

My father told me about his journey with his dad, his custody struggles , and the interpersonal conflicts between him and my mother. Eventually, he explained that he concluded: "Justin will come find me when he's ready."

I also asked my father to share his experiences growing up

My father grew up in Ghana, and his own father was only a kid at the time. My father also left his entire family for boarding school at 14 years old, and at 16, he left Ghana to come to the US.

Hearing this story, a lump formed in my throat as I felt — for the first time — empathy for my dad. I wonder how he felt as a little boy.

Fully immersing myself in my dad's story wasn't easy. It was challenging to remove my biased perspective of anger and distrust. I pushed myself to engage from a place of curiosity and ask him questions as if I was a student.

Hearing my dad's story helped me understand

At the end of our conversation, I told my father I disagreed with his approach but understood how he arrived at his conclusion. We hugged, and my father told me he was proud of me, which I never heard growing up.

This conversation did not transform us into a father-son duo holding hands and walking into the sunset. My dad's decision not to fight for a place in my life robbed both of us of father-son experiences that we can never get back.

However, this conversation gave me access to my heritage, Ghana, which I'd previously avoided. This allowed me to get involved in social entrepreneurial projects, like working with an elementary school and hiring and training Ghanaian staff members.

It also gave me access to an incredible mentor, my father . Previously, I avoided my dad. Now, I actively seek him out, particularly when I need feedback on a project.

Perhaps most importantly, this conversation taught me a profound lesson I now apply to every area of my life. I learned that when we do not seek to understand and respect the person we disagree with, it only hurts us.

That day, if I had chosen to confront my father from a place of vitriol and anger, his rejection would still haunt me, and I would have never learned the powerful lesson that every person has a story that shapes who they are today.

Jeff Bogdan, who dedicated a whopping 33 years of his service to Microsoft, found himself abruptly terminated from his position in February. Bogdan, who served as the Director of Learning and Development (L&D) at Microsoft Windows, took to LinkedIn to share his thoughts and reflections on his "incredible" journey with the tech giant.

In a heartfelt post, Bogdan expressed gratitude for his time at Microsoft, describing it as an "incredible ride." He particularly highlighted the last two years of his career, during which he successfully pitched and landed an L&D role in the Windows division. Bogdan's vision was to instil a "teach-it-all" mindset alongside the existing "learn-it-all" culture within the organisation.

"I focused on organising the learning investments for a 2,000-person org, and then worked to align that with learning & development offerings from our parent orgs and from central HR," he said.

However, Bogdan's tenure came to an unexpected end when his position was eliminated due to Human Resources (HR) adopting the hub and spoke model for L&D, a strategy he had advocated for. Despite his disappointment, Bogdan remained optimistic about his future, emphasising that he is far from retirement and eager to make further contributions.

"My job elimination was the result of HR adopting the hub & spoke model for L&D that I was pitching. Sadly, when my division already had their L&D team in place, there wasn't a seat at the table for me," he added.

Since sharing his post, Bogdan's reflections have resonated with many within the tech community, amassing over 3,000 reactions and sparking numerous comments. His story serves as a reminder of the uncertainties inherent in corporate dynamics and the challenges faced by long-serving employees in navigating organisational changes.

"After abundant reflection, I have concluded that I am nowhere close to the "R word". There is still so much that I want to contribute. So now begins the journey of finding my second career, he said.
