Task 1 Report: Land Degradation

land degradation essay ielts

Question: The above pie chart shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 8+ Sample Answer::

(Intro & Overview) The pie chart explains the main causes of a reduction in productivity of agricultural land globally, whereas the table illustrates how three distinct areas in the world were affected by the same three causes throughout the 1990s. Overall, over-grazing was the most significant, closely followed by deforestation and over-cultivation. In addition, the table indicates that Europe suffered the largest proportion of degraded land, with North America experiencing the least. Each of three areas showed different primary causes of degradation.

(Detail 1) Turning to the detail of the pie chart, 35% of land degradation was caused by over-grazing, compared to deforestation composing 30% and over-cultivation accounting for 28%. Therefore these were the three most significant reasons, with a mere 7% due to ‘other’ causes.

(Detail 2) Regarding the table, 23% of total land degraded occurred in Europe which was the highest figures across the three regions. This primarily resulted from deforestation and over-cultivation, with 9.8% and 7.7% respectively. Following this was Oceania with 13% of total farmland being destroyed by over-grazing (11.3%) and deforestation (1.7%). It is worth noting that over-cultivation caused zero deterioration of farmland in this region. By contrast, North America experienced the least serious problem, with just 5% of total land degraded. Of this 3.3% was derived from over-cultivation, as opposed to 1.5% due to over-grazing and just 0.2% resulting from deforestation. ( 227 words )

Candidate’s Response:

The pie chart and table could noticed that what reasons are pivotal and essential for demolishing lands.

Overall, as can be seen from the the most effective causes of land degradation is over-grazing by worldwide and it is clear from the table that Europe is a region which have the most impression on the land degradation.

Getting back to details, the first and more importantly reason for demolishing is over-grazing by some domestic animals which its percentage is 35% after that the second reason is deforestation which its percentage is similar to over-grazing approximately (30%),the third reason is over-cultivation that  is roughly a quarter  and the last one is some other reasons that is included a tiny fraction.

As is illustrated by the table, the most percentage of over-grazing which was the main reason on the pie chart  above is allocated to Oceania which is included some islands such as  Australia and New Zealand; moreover, the enormous percentage of deforestation that was the second reason on the pie chart is relevant to Europe region.

Cambridge IELTS 8 - Test 1 - Academic Writing - Worldwide Land Degradation

When working on Task 1, it’s important to understand that there are two different versions of the task. In the first version, the focus is on interpreting data presented in the form of a pie chart and a table. In the second version, the focus is on analyzing the causes of land degradation and the specific regions where it is occurring.

When dealing with data, it’s typically best to start with the smallest details and work your way up to the bigger picture. This allows you to gain a better understanding of the data and identify any patterns or trends that may exist.

When it comes to writing, it’s important to avoid using overused or exaggerated phrases such as “it is obvious” or “it is clear.” While these phrases may seem like a quick and easy way to convey your message, they can actually harm your score and weaken the credibility of your writing.

Instead, try using more precise and accurate language to express your ideas. For example, you could use the phrase “in general” or “overall” to provide a more nuanced and detailed explanation of your point. These phrases can help you demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic and showcase your critical thinking skills.

In addition, using varied and sophisticated vocabulary can also help improve the quality of your writing. By incorporating synonyms and related terms, you can avoid repetition and make your writing more engaging and compelling.

Overall, it’s important to be intentional and thoughtful in your choice of language when writing. By avoiding cliches and using precise and accurate vocabulary, you can enhance the impact and effectiveness of your writing.

The pie chart compares the various causes of land degradation across the world, while the table shows the affected regions during the 1990s. Overall, over-utilization of land was the main cause of land degradation, with Europe being the region most heavily affected.

More than a quarter (28%) of the world’s land degradation was attributed to the over-cultivation of crops, while a third was caused by extensive logging. The biggest factor was over-grazing which accounted for more than a third (35%).

In terms of regions, North America had the lowest percentage with over-farming affected 3.3% of the land while over-pasturing impacted 1.5%, resulting in a total of 5% of all land being barren. Oceania had the highest percentage of infertile land impacted by over-grazing, totaling 11.3%. When factoring in deforestation, Oceania’s overall land degradation was 13%. In Europe, farmlands were heavily affected, with 23% of its overall land suffering from degradation. Deforestation was the biggest contributor, accounting for 9.8%, while over-cultivation and over-grazing accounted for 7.7% and 5.5%, respectively.

The pie chart compares the leading causes of unproductive land due to soil degradation, while the table provides information on the percentage of affected land by region in the 1990s. Overall, over-usage of land was a significant factor contributing to unproductive land, with Europe’s farmland being the most heavily impacted compared to other regions.

More than a quarter (28%) of global land degradation was attributed to over-cultivation, with 7.7% of affected land found in Europe and 3.3% in North America. Overlogging accounted for 30% of land degradation worldwide, with only 1.7% of affected land in Oceania, a small fraction in North America, and 10% in Europe.

Over-grazing was responsible for more than a third (35%) of land degradation, with 10% of land in Oceania considered over-grazed, while 5% in Europe and 1.5% in North America. In total, nearly a quarter of European land was affected by land degradation, followed by Oceania at 13%.

The main factors responsible for the decreased productivity of agricultural land in North America, Europe, and Oceania during the 1990s were summarized in a pie chart and a table.

land degradation essay ielts

the most serious problem was over-grazing. It has caused the world to lose 35% of agriculture land. This problem is followed closely by deforestation and over-cultivation.

The area that has lost most proportion of its agriculture land was Europe at 23% However, Oceania and North America was not as badly affected, losing 13% and 5% of its farmland respectively.

Surprisingly, the main problem faced by each area is different from one another. The problem with over-grazing is especially serious in Oceania, resulting in 11.3% of its land unsuitable for agriculture. On the other hand, deforestation that caused 9.8% of agriculture land unusable was the major problem faced by the European farmers. Although over-cultivation was the primary threat in North America, it was not a problem at all in Oceania.

In conclusion, over-grazing was the main cause of worldwide degradation in 1990s. Europe’s percentage of degradation was largest of all three regions and all three regions had different predominant causes.

Model Answer 2:

The pie chart gives information about the causes of land damage. The table compares the causes of this phenomenon in North America, Europe and Oceania.

Overall, the most striking facts to emerge from the graphs are that overgrazing accounted for the first reason of land degradation worldwide and Europe was affected the most as compared to the two other regions.

In detail, overgrazing represented the primary cause of land degradation at more than a third followed by deforestation and over-cultivation which accounted for approximately 30% of land degradation. The remaining proportion was for unspecified causes at 7%.

On the other hand, causes of land damage varied significantly between the regions. In fact, Europe was the most affected with just under a quarter of its land degraded. This was due to deforestation at 9.8% and over-cultivation at 7.7%. In Oceania, 13% of the land was damaged mainly by overgrazing. Finally, America had the lowest proportion of land degradation with just 5% of which 3.3% were caused by over-cultivation.

land degradation essay ielts

The pie chart depicts the main reasons that led to the degradation of agricultural land around the world and the table gives information about how these factors affected North American, Europe and Oceania during the 1990s.

Overall, overgrazing, deforestation and over cultivation each accounted for around a third of land degradation worldwide. In Europe, the main cause was deforestation. However, in North America, the main factor responsible for land degradation was over cultivation and in Oceania it was overgrazing. Overgrazing accounted for 35% of land degradation around the world and this was followed by deforestation (30%) and over cultivation (28%). In Europe, 23% of the total land was degraded and this figure was the highest amongst the three regions. While 9.8% of this land was degraded by deforestation, over cultivation and over grazing were responsible for 7.7% and 5.5% of land degradation respectively. In Oceania, overgrazing degraded 11.3% of the land, whereas the other two factors had minimal effect. By contrast, North America had only 5% of the total land degraded and over cultivation was the main reason there. This factor caused the degradation of 3.3% of the total land in North America.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: writing a mixed/combined/multiple graph; Cambridge 8 Test 1; pie chart and table on land degradation; with plan and model answer

Writing a good answer to a combined / multiple/ mixed graph is always confusing for many IELTS candidates. In this Academic IELTS Writing Task 1 post we are looking at this problem in detail and finding solutions so that we can answer this kind of graph easily. The example picture is taken from Cambridge IELTS series 8 Test 1 . You will also find a writing plan and a model answer in this post.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: writing a mixed/combined/multiple graph; Cambridge 8 Test 1; pie chart and table on land degradation; with plan and model answer

Let’s look at a combined / multiple/ mixed graph first.

The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: writing a mixed/combined/multiple graph; Cambridge 8 Test 1; pie chart and table on land degradation; with plan and model answer

If we have to answer this question, we need to understand the picture clearly and then make a solid plan quickly.

Here are a few problems that candidates face regularly when answering this type of question.

  • The number of paragraphs to write: Candidates often get confused about the number of paragraphs to write for this question. Should it be 3/4/5 or more?
  • Limiting the words: In this type of questions candidates often forget that they are writing too many words. Be cautious! You may write more than 150 words, but should not make your examiner irritated or bored!
  • Making relevant comparisons: Candidates often get confused in deciding whether to compare the two or three given pictures.
  • Providing all or some information in the body paragraph: Providing information can become tricky sometimes! Candidates also face this problem on a regular basis.

Solving the problems:

Here are a few suggestions to solve the above-mentioned problems.

  • Paragraphing: Look at the question carefully. If it has two pictures, see if there is any headline for each picture. This may give you a hint about the discussed subject. In most cases, the pictures can never be compared when they are different. In this case, you have a pie chart and a table and the information they are providing are also quite dissimilar. So, you need to write a 4-paragraph answer (including a conclusion) or a 3-paragraph answer (excluding a conclusion).
  • Word Limit: You should build up a habit of guessing the number of words that you have written every now and then. Thus, you can control your writing. You can also make a plan of how many words you want to write for each paragraph. This will limit your writing accurately.
  • Making comparisons: If the pictures are similar, say, two or three pie charts, you need to check them carefully. If they present the same information at different times or periods, you must compare them in the same paragraph. However, for pictures like this one, a pie chart, and a table, where each picture presents information which does not match with the other, you need not compare.
  • Providing data/information: In most combined or mixed graphs, you need not to provide all the data or information in your description because you need to write more than 150 words. So, you must make a good plan on the question beforehand to include only the necessary data or information.

Here is a plan that I’ve made for your better understanding of the model answer that I’ve prepared.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: writing a mixed/combined/multiple graph; Cambridge 8 Test 1; pie chart and table on land degradation; with plan and model answer

Now let’s have a look at the model answer.

Model answer:

The pie chart is a depiction of the prime reasons for low productive agricultural lands whereas the table illustrates the effects of these reasons in three regions of the earth during the 1990s.

Overall, it is clear that the prime reasons for this problem were deforestation and over-grazing and farmland degradation in Europe was a bigger problem than in other regions.

As for the pie chart, excessive animal grazing and cutting down of trees cause 35% and 30% of worldwide land dilapidation respectively. Over-cultivation accounts for 3% more than a quarter of land degradation while other causes comprise 7% collectively.

The table presents information on how these reasons differently affected three regions in the 1990s. Europe had the highest percentage of land clearance which was 23%. In the same period, the lowest percentage of land degradation was in North America and it reached only 5%. The major cause of the problem was deforestation in Europe (9.8%) while in North America and Oceania, the reasons were over-cultivation (3.3%) and over-grazing (11.3%) respectively. Moreover, deforestation in Europe was higher than in North America and Oceania combined. Though in Europe and North America, over-cultivation was quite huge, no land was degraded for over-cultivation in Oceania.
