The Best Kindergarten Math Assessment (Printable Rubrics)

kindergarten math assessment printable rubrics

Do you need a great way to track your kindergarten students’ basic math skills? These kindergarten math assessment printable rubrics are the perfect solution.

math assignment for kindergarten

Types of Kindergarten Assessments

There are many ways to test a kindergartner’s math abilities.  If you are a kindergarten teacher in a public school, chances are they provide you with a math curriculum that has assessments.  On the other hand, if you are homeschooling, tutoring, or a private school teacher, you may need assessments.

Here are different ways to assess young children’s math skills:

  • Skill based task cards and recording sheets.
  • Conversations with Daily Math Talks
  • Play math games with them
  • Observe and record as they “play” with manipulatives (see printable rubrics below)
  • Traditional paper/pencil tests provided by curriculum compaines

Kindergarten Math Assessment Rubrics

When teaching kindergarten, I had plenty of rapid task assessments to administer throughout the year. These were great, but I didn’t have a way to track their progress and share it clearly with parents.  To solve that, I created these kindergarten math assessment printable rubrics.

These printable rubrics are broken down by Kindergarten common core math standards.  Each standard has it’s own set of rubrics to clearly mark the kids’ progress – whether through observations, one-on-one assessments, or whole group classwork.

math assignment for kindergarten

At the top of the page, you will find the cluster (standard), followed by 4 levels of mastery.  If a child may need extra practice, there is a section at the bottom to write specific notes to the parents.

These kindergarten assessment printables are perfect to keep in the kids’ records for the entire school year.

Counting and Cardinality

When you think of the basic math taught in kindergarten, most of those skills fall into the Counting and Cardinality math standard.

Within the Counting and Cardinality, you will observe and record the individual students abilities to:

  • Count to 100 by 1’s
  • Count to 100 by 10’s
  • When shown a number 0-20, count out that many objects
  • Count forward beginning from a given number
  • Count objects one-by-one saying the numbers in standard order
  • Identify which set of objects is greater than less than, or equal to, another
  • Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 when presented as numerals
  • Count to answer “how many?”

  • State whether a shape is 2D or 3D
  • Describe positions of objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to
  • Build shapes from components such as sticks and play-doh
  • Draw 2-D shapes
  • Compose simple shapes to form
  • Analyze and compare 2D and 3D shapes

Number Operation and Base Ten

Do you give year end tests, as well as monitor throughout the semesters?  If so, these printable kindergarten rubrics are great for tracking their progress over the course of time.

When you give the kids a set of red and yellow counters and tens frame dot cards , you’ll be amazed at how many skills they will demonstrate.

  • Compose numbers from 11-19
  • Decompose numbers from 11-19

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

The Operations and Algebraic rubrics covers the basic additions and subtractions skills.  These skills are often assessed on a middle to end of year kindergarten math test.

  • Represent addition with object, drawing, acting out situation, or verbal explanations
  • Solve addition word problems, within 10, using objects or drawings
  • Decompose numbers into pairs in more than one way – using drawings or objects
  • Solve “how many more” to take a set of 10 when given a number 1-9
  • Represent subtractions with object, drawing, acting out situations, or verbal explanations.
  • Solve subtraction word problems, within 10, using objects or drawings.

Kindergarten math — overview and recommendations for workbooks & worksheets

This is a comprehensive article about all aspects of kindergarten math, with recommendations for workbooks, and lists of free worksheet resources.

abacus

The goal of kindergarten mathematics is to prepare children for first grade math . Please see below a list of objectives and goals for kindergarten math:

  • To count by rote at least to 20, but preferably a little beyond.
  • The concepts of equality, more, and less
  • To count backwards from 10 to 0.
  • To recognize numbers
  • To be able to write numbers
  • To recognize basic shapes
  • to understand up, down, under, near, on the side, etc. (basic directions)
  • To understand the concepts of addition and subtraction with small numbers
  • Expose the student to two-digit numbers.

Children may also get started with money, time, and measuring, though it is not absolutely necessary to master any of that. The teacher should keep it playful, supply measuring cups, scales, clocks, and coins to have around, and answer questions.

During 1st grade, children will then learn addition and subtraction facts, two-digit numbers, some adding and subtracting with two-digit numbers, and some basics of measuring, time and money.

Mathematics starts with COUNTING. Let children count all kinds of things they see or use. Use simple counting games , such as:

  • Have a deck of regular playing cards minus the picture cards. Each person draws a card. The one with a higher number wins all the cards played in that round. This can teach both number recognition and counting, because the child can count those little pictures (hearts, spades, clubs, or diamonds) on the card.
  • A variation of the one above: deal two cards to each person. The person with a higher TOTAL wins all the cards played in that round. Children will learn basic addition!
  • Use any board game. Have the markers advance as many steps as a die or dice show. The child will need to count the dots on the die or dice, and then count steps to move his marker.
  • Lay a bunch of dominoes face down on the table. A child picks one, you pick one. The person with a higher "dot-count" gets both dominoes.
  • Lay a bunch of dominoes face UP on the table. A child picks one and places it on the table to start the "train". The next person picks one so that its end matches one end of a domino already laid.
  • Play with marbles or blocks or similar objects. You take some objects, and ask the child to take for himself as many as you have AND ONE more. Then it's the child's turn to take some, and you need to take the same amount plus one more. Reverse the game later to do ONE LESS.
  • From counting you can go on to simple addition and subtraction with small numbers. The idea is to teach the child the CONCEPTS of addition and subtraction, and not to worry about memorizing addition and subtraction facts (those come in 1st and 2nd grades). You can for example use this simple bus activity where people come in (or go out of) the bus on different bus stops to illustrate the meanings of addition and subtraction.

abacus

A 100-bead abacus

One extremely helpful manipulative to buy is a basic 100-bead abacus (10 racks, 10 beads in each). This is the prime "toy" to teach numbers beyond ten. With such an abacus children will naturally learn their "tens and ones". I've written about the usage of abacus for learning place value here .

Worksheets for shapes, matching, equivalence, more, and less

To recognize shapes and practice matching, you can either use ready-made worksheets or workbooks, or make some of your own.

Another variation is to ask the child to draw. First make some sticks, circles, squares, or other shapes on a page, and encircle them. Make for the child a big "bubble" to draw in, and ask the child to draw either the same amount, one more, or one less.

Also have your child practice writing numbers on paper.

Importance of learning math skills.

It's no secret that mathematics is one of the foundational subjects that students need to learn. Math forms the basis for so many other subjects — like science, engineering, and technology — and because of that, it's essential that students develop strong math skills starting from a very young age.

Benefits of learning math

Learning math has many benefits. It helps students:

  • Begin to develop problem-solving, logical reasoning, and critical-thinking skills
  • Grow their understanding of numbers and basic operations
  • Understand how math is used in real-life situations

By ensuring that students have a solid foundation, teachers can help set them up for future success.

Discover printable and digital math resources

Kindergarten math assignment.

math assignment for kindergarten

Kindergarten  students  write  equations  and number bonds   to represent two addition and  subtraction  problems .  This assignment is strong because  it builds students’ conceptual understanding  of  addition and subtraction  and how  both operations  can be represented in multiple ways.

Related Standards

K.OA.A.1 : Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

Why is this assignment strongly aligned?

Focus This assignment is well-aligned with  K.OA.A.1 , which  requires students to represent addition and subtraction  in a variety of ways, including symbolic representations such as expressions and equations.  In this assignment,   students  have  to   represent one addition and one subtraction problem symbolically in two ways :  equations and  number bonds . The numbers used in both problems (5+3=8 and 8-3=5) are appropriate,  because   k indergarten standards require students  to  add and subtract within 10.  The methods for adding  (counting all ) and subtracting ( taking away) are also appropriate for  k indergarten ;  more complex methods ,  such as finding an unknown addend ,   are more appropriate for  first grade.

Rigor This assignment builds students’ conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction, the aspect of rigor outlined in  K.OA.A.1 .  Kindergarten students begin learning what addition and subtraction represent by acting them out in concrete ways ,  such as using fingers or other objects to add and subtract ,  and they also learn that addition and subtraction can be represented symbolically using mathematical language such as equations. Number bonds are another symbolic representation that help students grasp the concepts of addition and subtraction by visual izing  the relationship of parts to a whole.

Proposed curriculum changes for preschool math, middle school social studies move forward at Summit School District

Board of education gives initial approval to updates meant to better serve spanish-speakers and align to new state standards.

The Summit School District board of education gave initial approval for a set of curriculum updates for preschool math and middle school social studies during an April 11 meeting.

For the past months, officials have been in the midst of their regular curriculum cycle process that involves reviewing current content and ordering new materials to ensure classes are in line with both district goals and state standards.

Officials are eyeing updates to preschool math, kindergarten through fifth grade fine arts and kindergarten through 12th-grade social studies with a total budget allocation of $510,000 for the new materials.

“Our committee has been working every other week on this,” said preschool coordinator Kristin Sposato. “It has been a big task, and kudos to the group for showing up every other week and being ready to do this work.”

At the preschool level, the district will shift to an updated math program to provide more robust English and Spanish materials. The move follows in the footsteps of changes made to math for kindergarteners to fifth graders that aimed to improve dual-language learning and went into effect this school year.

The new program, Eureka Math² , will also better prepare students for the district’s International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which begins in elementary school and continues with the Primary and Secondary Years Programme in middle and high school, respectively. After 10th grade, students have the option of pursuing an additional two years to gain International Baccalaureate college credit or a full diploma.

“Our big umbrella is (International Baccalaureate),” Sposato said.

At the middle-school level, officials are planning to adopt a package of new materials from McGraw Hill. After reviewing other options that included packages from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and National Geographic, the district’s curriculum committee ultimately felt McGraw Hill checked the most boxes, said K-12 Literacy Coordinator Shannon Adam.

The package includes traditional print resources such as textbooks and student journals that are fully mirrored with a digital platform. Its online resources also include additional primary and secondary source articles, video and text.

Unlike some of the other curriculum packages that officials considered, McGraw Hill’s offers nearly all of its materials in Spanish as well as English, something that Adam said had been difficult to find.

“Right now, in literacy and math, vendors are making all kinds of dual-language resources, but social studies is not quite there yet,” Adam said, adding that about 50% of middle school social studies students are in a dual-language class.

The curriculum package was also specifically designed to meet Colorado Department of Education requirements for social studies classes that were approved in late 2022 with implementation set for the 2024-25 school year.

The new standards are meant to better include more underrepresented groups in history such as people of color, LGBTQ-plus people, religious minorities and women. The goal, Adam said, is about “really trying to capture more multiple perspectives within history and civics.”

The standards also seek to shift the learning model from a lecture-based approach to a more student-driven, inquiry-based environment.

“Right now, what we’re really focusing on doing is building out those units to be more robust … with more engaging activities,” Adam said. “So asking students to engage much more in the research writing process, the thinking process and comparing texts and knowing the different types of texts they’re engaging in.”

Board member Julie Shapiro asked if the new resources “have specific references or additional references for Colorado’s history as it fits into those broader themes?”

Adam responded that there are particular areas “where Colorado is highlighted” throughout the curriculum.

Board member Chris Guarino asked if parents who gave feedback on the proposed updates during the search and selection process felt heard.

Adam pointed to a survey of 29 parents that helped identify areas of the curriculum that parents felt were the most important.

“I would say that our interaction was actually really productive,” Adam said, adding that officials were able to answer questions about the benefit of having both print and digital materials and ways parents can stay engaged in their children’s education.

Of the $510,000 budgeted for curriculum updates, the preschool changes will amount to $15,000 while middle school social studies changes will total between $121,000 and $160,000. With those requests approved on a first reading, the board will need to vote again at an upcoming meeting to give final approval.

The district plans to have all curriculum updates in place for next school year.
