Detailing the Writing of Scientific Manuscripts: 25-30 Paragraphs

In their professional practices, physicians often face unexpected situations or chance on innovative proposals and ideas. As a result of their training and competence, they usually come up with hypotheses to be tested and research is conducted. This research is completed and their results submitted for presentations at conferences as free communications. Nevertheless, the realization of this creative process is only complete when a scientific manuscript is published in a journal. At this ultimate stage, most efforts seem not be brought to a standstill 1 , 2 . There are several reasons why scholars, interns, residents, graduate students and even experienced physicians may find it difficult to move forward from congress' abstracts to full manuscripts published in journals. However, the most significant hindrance rests with the difficulty writing the mere 25-30 paragraphs of an original manuscript. Many freeze and give up in front of a blank paper or a blinking cursor on a blank word processor's page on the monitor screen. In the previous manuscript 3 , we analyzed and suggested improvements to the process of peer review. In this point of view, we propose a practical strategy to systematize the writing of scientific paragraphs, aiming to simplify the task of scientific writing. This way, our intent is to increase the rate of publication of full manuscripts based on several outstanding abstracts presented annually at major medical conferences, and facilitate the currently overburdened process of peer review.

The format of scientific communication has been evolving greatly over the centuries 4 - 7 , making reading more objective and standardized. One of the important tools in this process is the IMRaD format 4 , 5 , 7 , an acronym derived from the initials of the main sections of a manuscript - introduction, methods, results and discussion. Throughout the twentieth century, the IMRaD format has been increasingly applied, accounting for about 10% of the manuscripts in the 1950s, being dominant in the 1960s, and reaching 80% in the 1970s 7 . Presently, IMRad is the format recommended and adopted by the main medical journals all over the world, including the ABC ( Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia ).

In addition to the IMRaD format, original manuscripts submitted for publication should meet specific standards and rules of each journal. Although a fairly uniform pattern tends to prevail, there are differences that should be observed at the time of writing. For instance, the number of words is limited to 4,500 in ABC and 5,000 in JACC, including text and references. Considering that the references are usually limited to 30-40, and have around 1,000 words, circa 3,500-4,000 are left for the text's body, i.e., to be used in the 25-30 paragraphs of IMRaD, representing about 130 words each.

In the pursuit for evidence and objective data, as a convenience sample, all original manuscripts published in the January 2012 and 2013 editions of ABC and JACC journals have been analyzed (the first two numbers of these months for the latter). There was a fairly clear trend about the total number of paragraphs and distribution of paragraphs in four sections of the IMRaD of a manuscript. For the 20 ABC's manuscripts and 34 JACC's ones, the average number of paragraphs was 28.9 and 28.2 (p = 0.703), respectively, with 1/3 of them having 25-30 paragraphs, and 57% of the total manuscripts having overall 22-33 paragraphs. This relative constancy should be observed and highlighted, considering that the topics and areas covered, as well as the background and the nationality of the authors, are quite different. Thus, this confirms the assumption that there is a basic format to be followed for an effective publication.

Figure 1 illustrates the distribution of paragraphs for the various IMRaD sections in the two journals analyzed. Although there is some variability among the manuscripts, the introduction is clearly a section with fewer paragraphs (p < 0.001), while the remaining sections are somewhat balanced (p > 0.05), especially for original manuscripts of JACC, in which the sections of methods, results and discussion tend to have eight to nine paragraphs. When the distributions of paragraphs between ABC and JACC are compared, introductions and discussions tend to have more paragraphs in ABC than in JACC, respectively, 3.8 versus 2.4 (p < 0.01) and 10.4 versus 8.8 (p = 0.04).

Based on these results, in our personal experience as authors of original manuscripts and according to other authors' opinions 4 , 8 - 10 , a simple content model may be proposed within the IMRaD format, taking 25-30 paragraphs as standard for an original manuscript. For practical purposes, one page is considered one page in a word processor, with conventional margins and with a 1.5 line spacing and font size 11.

Unfolding the sections

Introduction: 1 page (ideally), maximum 400 words over 1-4 paragraphs (ideally 3) - some journals restrict this to 350 words (E.g.: ABC); 5-10 references.

Methods: 2-3 pages (possibly higher in experiments resorting to innovative methods or plenty of techniques or sophisticated statistics) - not exceeding 750 words over 6 9 paragraphs; 5-15 references

Results: 2-3 pages of text, figures and tables, as strictly necessary; not exceeding 1,000 words over 4-9 paragraphs; usually without references.

Discussion: 3-4 pages of text; this is usually the most extensive part of the manuscript relating to word count 4 , 8 - 10 , with 1,000-1,500 words distributed over up to 10 paragraphs; including a conclusion paragraph, although some journals consider the latter another text section. The discussion usually has 10-20 references, with some of them possibly appearing in previous text sections.

30. Conclusions and implications - this represents a synthesis of the study, usually answering the hypothesis reported in the final paragraph of the introductory section, solving the study objective.

A rather practical observation is that the writing of paragraphs does not need to follow the order of sections or, even, the several paragraphs making up the given section. In practice, most of the experienced authors start with the methods and results, hence following to the discussion, and only then proceeding to the introduction. The title is typically their last concern.

Grounded on the practical strategy presented in this point of view, in keeping with the IMRaD format, we may assert that potential authors will deal better with blinking cursors on the word processor and will deal easily and objectively with the final stage of transforming an outstanding communication at a conference into an excellent original manuscript. This will allow a much larger audience to benefit from their findings and interpretations, forever.

The Word Limit in Academic Writing (and How to Stick to It)

Even the phrase “word limit” can cause panic among students . For some it’s the challenge of writing enough, while others find it hard to stick within the limit given. In either case, it can lead to spending more time worrying about the length of your paper than the content!

And length isn't everything, right ladies? Ahem.

But why do college papers come with set word limits? And what should you do to ensure you don’t write too much or too little?

Why Have a Word Limit?

There are two main reasons that academic papers usually come with a word limit:

  • Fairness It’s impossible to grade two papers of vastly different lengths (e.g., 20,000 compared to 2,000 words) on the same scale. The word limit makes sure that everyone taking the same class knows what is expected of them.
  • Communication Skills As well as testing your knowledge, college papers are about communicating clearly and concisely. Setting a word limit forces you to consider what you’re saying more carefully, helping you to develop your writing skills.

Sticking to the word limit is, therefore, part of being a good academic, since being a long way over or under could suggest you’ve misjudged the scope of the essay topic or that you’re having trouble communicating your ideas.

How to Stick to the Word Limit

Although many colleges give you roughly 10% leeway on the word limit, you should aim for your finished paper to be as close to the suggested word count as possible. If you find yourself writing too much, you can reduce the word count by:

  • Editing out repetition, redundant words and padding phrases
  • Cutting down long or unnecessary quotations
  • Reducing the number of examples or case studies used (if you’ve included several)
  • Using the active voice instead of the passive voice

More generally, you should re-read your work and eliminate anything that isn’t directly related to the question you’re answering. As well as helping you stick to the word limit, this will make your work more focused, which could boost your grades.

How to Increase Your Word Count

If you’re struggling to write enough, the temptation might be to add padding phrases like “in my opinion” or long block quotations until you hit the minimum word count. But this will simply detract from the clarity of your writing.

Instead, the answer is usually to go back over your work and look for things that could be improved with a little additional attention. This might involve:

  • Addressing anything from your essay question that you’ve overlooked
  • Adding illustrative examples to support a point
  • Considering different sources and views on the same issue
  • Using short quotations as evidence for your arguments

Moreover, whether you’ve written too much or too little, getting someone else to read your work and offer feedback is a fantastic idea (especially if you ask a professional for help). This will help you to identify areas that could be expanded or cut in the next draft, so eventually you should be able to get your essay to the required length.

How Long Should a Research Title Be? Data from 104,161 Examples

I analyzed a random sample of 104,161 full-text research papers, uploaded to PubMed Central between the years 2016 and 2021, to learn more about title length.

I used the BioC API to download the data (see the References section below).

Here’s a summary of the key findings

1. The median title was 14 words long (equivalent to 103 characters), and 90% of titles in the sample were between 6 and 25 words.

2. The 10-year trend shows an increase in title length from an average of 103 characters in 2012 to 111 characters in 2021.

3. Since Google shows only the first 60 characters of titles in its results page, 89.2% of titles in our sample will be truncated when they appear in Google search. And the median title loses 41.7% of its words in this process .

4. On average, review articles (systematic reviews and meta-analyses) had longer titles (16 words) compared to original research articles (14 words) .

5. L onger articles are not associated with longer titles .

6. Articles published in high impact journals tend to have shorter titles than average .

1. Overall title length

In our sample of 104,161 articles, the mean title length was 14.7 words, and the distribution of title word count had an expected right skew:

Here’s a table that describes the title word and character counts in the sample:

From these data, we can conclude that most titles were between 11 and 18 words long (80 to 129 characters).

The shortest title was:

“Cellular Inheritance” Link to the article on PubMed

Length: 2 words (21characters)

And the longest title was:

“Safety and efficacy of alpha‐amylase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DSM 9553, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NCIMB 30251, Aspergillus oryzae CBS 585.94 and Aspergillus oryzae ATTC SD‐5374, endo‐1,4‐beta‐glucanase from Trichoderma reesei ATCC PTA‐10001, Trichoderma reesei ATCC SD‐6331 and Aspergillus niger CBS 120604, endo‐1,4‐beta‐xylanase from Trichoderma koningii MUCL 39203 and Trichoderma citrinoviride CBS 614.94 and endo‐1,3(4)‐beta‐glucanase from Aspergillus tubingensis MUCL 39199 as silage additives for all animal species” Link to the article on PubMed

Length: 148 words (1,097 characters)

2. Title length 10-year trend

The following is a plot of the average title character count each year, for the past 10 years:

The 10-year trend shows an increase in title length from an average of 103 characters in 2012 to 111 characters in 2021.

3. Titles as they appear in Google search

The results page of Google shows only the first 60 characters of titles and the rest is truncated. So, the first 60 characters constitute the part of a research title that is visible to users.

As an example, let’s try to search on Google for the article that had the longest title in our sample (1,097 characters).

In Google’s search field, I typed: “safety and efficacy of alpha-amylase” pubmed.

Here’s the response:

What happened is that Google chose a part of the title (specifically, 57 characters from the title) and displayed it in its results page.

We can all agree that this is horrible!

All these people who are searching online for the safety and efficacy for alpha-amylase are seeing a title that has nothing to do with their search, and will probably end up not clicking on that title.

So how many research titles get truncated by Google search? and what percentage of these title is invisible to users?

Based on our sample data, 89.2% of titles were longer than 60 characters and therefore will be truncated when they appear on the results page of Google. And the median title has 41.7% of its words invisible to online users.

Conclusion:

When writing a research title, make sure:

  • To keep it as short as possible
  • That the visible part in an online search (the first 60 characters) is meaningful. Journalists call this: front loading–i.e. important words should be put close to the beginning.

4. Title length for different article types

In our sample of 104,161 articles, review articles (systematic reviews and meta-analyses) had longer titles (median: 16 words; n=2,851 articles) compared to original research articles (median: 14 words; n=101,310 articles).

5. Influence of article length on title length

To study the influence of article length on title length, I ran a Poisson regression model that predicts the title character count given the whole article word count.

According to the output of that model:

A research article that has 1000 more words, has a title that is 1% longer.

Although this result is statistically significant, it is practically negligible, since an article that has 1000 words more than the median is associated with a title that is only 1 character longer.

In practice, longer research articles are not associated with longer titles.

6. Length of titles in different journals

The following table shows the maximum title length allowed in 10 famous scientific journals according to their “instructions for authors” available from their websites:

According to this table, famous journals recommend keeping titles below 126.6 characters on average. But 27% of the titles in our sample exceed this limit.

So where are these 27% of articles published?

More generally, do higher-quality journals prefer publishing shorter titles?

In order to answer this question, I ran a Poisson regression that models the title word count given the journal impact factor. Here’s the model’s output:

The model shows that a higher journal impact factor is associated with shorter titles. Specifically, a 1 unit increase in the journal impact factor is associated with a decrease of 1.1% in the title word count. For the median article, this means that a 1 unit increase in the journal impact factor is associated with a decrease of 0.15 words (or approximately 1 character) in the title.

On average, higher-quality journals tend to publish slightly shorter titles.

How Long Should a College Essay Be? | Word Count Tips

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit. If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

You should aim to stay under the specified limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, if you write too little, it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a thoughtful and developed essay.

Each university has a different suggested or required word count depending on which application portal it uses.

Some application portals will allow you to exceed the word count limit, but admissions officers have limited time and energy to read longer essays. Other application portals have a strict limit and will not allow you to exceed it.

For example, in the Common App , the portal will not allow you to submit more than 650 words. Some colleges using the Common App will allow you to submit less than 250 words, but this is too short for a well-developed essay.

For scholarship essays , diversity essays , and “Why this college?” essays , word count limits vary. Make sure to verify and respect each prompt’s limit.

Don’t worry too much about word count until the revision stage ; focusing on word count while writing may hinder your creativity. Once you have finished a draft, you can start shortening or expanding your essay if necessary.

On some application portals, you can exceed the word limit, but there are good reasons to stay within it:

  • To maintain the admissions officer’s attention
  • To show you can follow directions
  • To demonstrate you can write concisely

Here are some strategies for shortening your essay.

Stay on the main point

It’s good to use vivid imagery, but only include relevant details. Cut any sentences with tangents or unnecessary information.

My father taught me how to strategically hold the marshmallow pierced by a twig at a safe distance from the flames to make sure it didn’t get burned, ensuring a golden brown exterior.

Typically, my father is glued to his computer since he’s a software engineer at Microsoft. But that night, he was the marshmallow master. We waited together as the pillowy sugary goodness caramelized into gooey delight. Good example: Sticks to the point On our camping trip to Yosemite, my family spent time together, away from technology and routine responsibility.

My favorite part was roasting s’mores around the campfire. My father taught me how to hold the marshmallow at a safe distance from the flames, ensuring a golden brown exterior.

These college essay examples also demonstrate how you can cut your essay down to size.

Eliminate wordiness

Delete unnecessary words that clutter your essay. If a word doesn’t add value, cut it.

Here are some common examples of wordiness and how to fix them.

Use a paraphrasing tool

If you want to save time, you can make use of a paraphrasing tool . Within the tool you can select the “short” mode to rewrite your essay in less words. Just copy your text in the tool and within 1 click you’ll have shortened your essay.

If you’re significantly under the word count, you’re wasting the opportunity to show depth and authenticity in your essay. Admissions officers may see your short essay as a sign that you’re unable to write a detailed, insightful narrative about yourself.

Here are some strategies for expanding your essay.

Show detailed examples, and don’t tell generic stories

You should include detailed examples that can’t be replicated by another student. Use vivid imagery, the five senses, and specific objects to transport the reader into your story.

Reveal your feelings and insight

If your essay lacks vulnerability or self-reflection, share your feelings and the lessons you’ve learned.

Be creative with how you express your feelings; rather than simply writing “I’m happy,” use memorable images to help the reader clearly visualize your happiness. Similarly, for insight, include the follow-up actions from your lessons learned; instead of claiming “I became a hard worker,” explain what difficult tasks you accomplished as a result of what you learned.
