Life Kit's Resolution Planner: 40 ideas and tips to start your New Year

What do you want to accomplish this year? Scroll through Life Kit's expert guides for practical and inspiring ways to grow in 2023.

Ah, the new year. It's a time to sketch out your goals and think about the roadmap to get there.

Life Kit has curated a list of some of our best episodes to help set you up for success in 2023. They include practical guidance (like how to pick a birth control or ask for a raise ), forward-thinking advice (like how to save for retirement or freeze your eggs ) and tips on how to live more mindfully (like how to reduce food waste or set boundaries ).

It might feel hard to start a new habit, but as BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford and author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything , told Life Kit in a 2020 interview , "it's easier to create habits and change than most people think, and it's faster than most people think. It can even be fun if you do it in the right way."

The key is to understand how behavior change happens. You've got to have the motivation, the ability to do the behavior and a prompt, says Fogg. "And the prompt is anything that reminds you to do this behavior now. And when those three things come together at the same moment, a behavior happens."

So go on, pick a resolution that's achievable — but also bold and aspirational. We've got 40+ ideas for you to choose from. Here's to a stronger, more confident you in 2023.

New Year, New You – 23 Purposeful Resolutions for Students

23 essential new year resolutions for students from elementary to university.

It’s that time again – the start of a brand-new year! And as we step into it, the moment comes to set goals and develop strategies to make 2023 your most successful year yet – full of goal-setting, dreams and plans to make them a reality. Many of us make New Year resolutions to assure ourselves that we will become better people in some way – whether that means achieving higher grades or simply being kinder to other human beings.

university classroom image

That being said, making New Year’s resolutions for college students can often seem daunting, especially when life already feels like there are so many necessary things to do. Coming up with the New Year’s resolutions worksheet for students from elementary, middle, or high schools isn’t simple as well. However, if you’re a student of any level looking to set yourself up for success this year, there are simple yet effective resolutions you can employ. Eventually, they should let you take charge of your future, make meaningful changes in your academic career, mental health, and well-being, and finally reach your goals. Let’s get started!

Academic Resolutions for Students in Colleges and Universities

1. Learn diligently but not just for grades

Learning is so much more than getting good grades. Make sure you set aside time each day to learn something new that isn’t necessarily related to your studies. Learning a language, reading a book about something outside of your studies, or understanding more about a particular culture can all be beneficial for broadening your knowledge and skill set. If necessary, address a trustworthy paper writing service or programming assignments help to help you with your homework routine and get more time for really significant things.

2. Develop new skills – soft and hard

When developing new skills, don’t just focus on the ones related to your degree. Think about what other skills could benefit you in life or as part of the job application process. Could you learn some coding? Are there any public speaking workshops you could attend? Could you do an online course in soft skills such as problem-solving or communication? The list is endless, you only need to choose the most beneficial activity and start investing in yourself.

3. Make new friends but stay connected with the family

College and university life can be tough at times, but having friends around can help make this transition easier. Don’t forget, though, that while making friends might be essential for fun and emotional support, you shouldn’t leave behind the people who were there from day one – your family. Keep them in the loop with regular updates, so they know what is happening in your life and care about theirs.

4. Attend several job interviews

While a student, do your best to get invitations to several job interviews for positions relevant to your study area. The goal here is not to land a perfect job straight away but to get invaluable experience and insight into how the recruitment industry works. Plus, it gives you crucial practice so that when that great role comes up in the future, you will be well-prepared and experienced enough to make a good run.

5. Get more sleep and take care of your mental health

Mental health awareness has become an increasingly important topic over recent years – especially among college-age students under massive pressure from both social influences and academic workloads. Make sure that taking care of your mental health is one of the top priorities this year. Use handy online tools to simplify your learning routine, take regular breaks from studying (and social media!), get plenty of sleep every night, and talk openly about mental health issues with friends and family if necessary.

6. Adopt healthier eating habits & exercise regularly

Eating right and exercising regularly should also be high up on everyone’s resolutions list this year – not just those studying at college or university. Small changes like swapping unhealthy snacks for healthier alternatives can have huge long-term benefits. Plus, do regular exercises – they release endorphins, which help boost mood levels. Try setting yourself weekly goals, for instance, running twice a week or eating vegetables with every meal – even small changes can make big differences sooner than you think.

New Year’s Resolutions for High School Students

7. Do your best to improve your grades

Many high school students struggle with keeping their grades up. This year, challenge yourself to work harder and strive for better marks. Setting small goals like studying every night, taking notes in class, or looking up a great paper example by a free essay writer before crafting your own piece can help you reach your academic goals while still allowing time for other activities. And don’t forget to take regular breaks – they’ll help keep your brain fresh and focused on learning.

8. Become a better student and focus on actual learning

Being a good student isn’t just about getting good grades; it is about understanding why those grades are important and what they mean for your academic future. This year, focus on going beyond memorizing facts and figures and actually engaging with the material you’re learning in class. Ask questions in class when something doesn’t make sense, and don’t be afraid to seek out extra resources if needed.

9. Explore your interests and research colleges/universities

High school is a great opportunity to explore different interests and discover where they may lead you after graduation. Take advantage of clubs, events, or courses that pique your interest – you never know what could inspire your future career path. At the same time, start researching college options well before graduation, so you have enough time to visit campuses and apply for scholarships once senior year rolls around.

10. Create a test prep schedule and stick to it

With standardized tests looming on the horizon, now is the perfect time to create a prep plan and stick to it! Designate certain days each week for studying topics related to the test, such as math equations or essay writing techniques – this will help you get everything covered before D-Day arrives.

11. “Unplug:” spend less time on social media

Social media is everywhere these days, but it isn’t always beneficial in terms of studying or mental health. Consider setting aside a certain time each day when you unplug from technology completely. This could mean dedicating an hour after school each day solely towards homework or reading a book instead of scrolling through Instagram stories all night long (yeah, we know how tempting that can be!)

12. Refrain from saying negative things about yourself

Lastly (yet, perhaps, most importantly!), practice self-love by refraining from saying – or even thinking – negative things about yourself. We all have our shortcomings, but focusing on them won’t get us anywhere. Instead, try embracing them as part of who you are while also striving for growth in your relationships and academic pursuits.

New Year’s Resolutions for Middle School Students

13. Ask your teacher for help improving your study habits by the end of this month

Studying can seem daunting, but approaching it with an organized plan can make it much more manageable. Your teacher can help you create a study plan that works for your schedule and learning style to ensure that all your bases are covered in exam prep.

14. Get organized: Do your school work as soon as you get home & keep your room clean every day

Having an organized area to work in makes studying and completing homework easier. Doing your assignments as soon as you can instead of procrastinating and putting them off for later is the best way to improve your academic performance. Also, having a clean room is way more enjoyable than living in chaos. Making sure your desk is always cleared off (with nothing but what you need) and your room is clean before bedtime will go a long way toward helping you stay on top of things at school.

15. Join a club or after-school activity ASAP

It’s crucial for your overall development to explore different interests outside the classroom. Joining an extracurricular activity helps build essential life skills like collaboration, communication, and problem solving while also introducing you to people with similar interests.

16. Volunteer with a local organization this year

Not only does volunteering look great on college applications, but it also allows students to give back to their community while gaining valuable experience working with others. Just be sure to choose organizations where you feel passionate about the cause – thankfully, there are lots of opportunities out there.

17. Eat one less junk food snack per day

Eating healthy snacks throughout the day helps fuel your body for studying – something especially important during exams or big projects. Try swapping out one unhealthy snack per day for something healthier, like carrots or celery sticks with hummus. This small change can have significant results over time.

18. Spend 30 minutes less time playing computer games or watching TV per day

Let’s face it – most of us spend far too much time glued to our screens each day without even realizing it. Dedicate yourself to reducing screen time by 30 minutes a day and replacing it with productive activities like reading books or going outside – your mind (and body!) will thank you later.

New Year’s Resolutions for Elementary Students

This section is meant primarily for parents.

19. Always say thank you when someone does something for you or gives you something

One resolution that should always be at the top of the list for parents is teaching kids to show gratitude daily. Whether it’s saying “thank you” when someone hands a child something or helps them with a math assignment, there are many simple ways to express gratitude in everyday life. Not only does this help create better relationships with those around kids, but it also lets children develop such an essential soft skill as empathy.

20. Set savings goals

Learning how to save money from the early years is an important lesson, and elementary school students should learn it as soon as possible. Challenge kids to come up with goals they want to achieve throughout the year, for example, saving their allowance over time to purchase a so-much-desired Lego set or Wednesday Addams outfit. Achievable targets will motivate them to keep going and see their savings goals come true.

21. Read at least 30 minutes every day

Make reading part of kids’ daily routine by setting aside 30 minutes each day for books or magazines. Not only does this help improve literacy skills, but it also encourages creativity and imagination in young readers. Plus, making reading part of their day-to-day life sets up healthy habits that last long after childhood ends.

22. Openly talk about your feelings

It’s only natural to feel shy at times. But don’t let fear get in the way of expressing your feelings. Encourage kids to talk openly about their emotions with family so they can build meaningful relationships free of judgment or hesitation. This resolution gives children permission to be honest about how they feel and learn how to cope with different situations that may arise throughout their lives.

23. Make your bed every morning

Making a bed every morning might seem like a small task, but it has enormous benefits. It teaches kids responsibility by reinforcing good habits like tidying up after themselves. Plus, having everything look neat and organized prepares them mentally for whatever comes next during their day.

Whether 2023 brings good or bad times ahead of us, it’s always important to reflect on our successes from last year while setting new goals for ourselves this year. These examples of New Year’s resolutions for students should help get any student started off on the right foot. Use them as inspiration to create positive changes within yourself that will be beneficial throughout life. Here’s wishing everyone an amazing year filled with plenty of growth opportunities ahead!

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

2021 is almost at a close. It’s the time of year when everyone reflects on the past and looks to the future. And part of looking to the coming year of 2023 is making New Year’s resolutions.

Coming up with New Year’s resolutions is always a tricky process. You want to challenge yourself, but you also want to remain realistic.

To help you strike this balance, we’ve put together a list of twelve good New Year’s resolutions to consider for 2023.

Whether you want to improve your health, advance your career, or just be a slightly better person, there’s a resolution for you on this list.

1. Learn to Cook a New Meal Every Month

Cooking is one of the most useful skills you can learn. It saves you money, provides you with access to healthy food, and is a gateway to enriching social activities such as dinner parties. Not to mention, it can be lots of fun.

However, simply resolving to “cook more” isn’t concrete enough to be useful. Instead, I recommend committing to cooking one new (to you) meal every month.

The meals don’t have to be elaborate, nor the cuisine unfamiliar. What matters is that you’re expanding your cooking skills and your repertoire of meals.

If you learned just one new dish/meal every month, then by the end of the year you’d have more than enough to cook a different meal each day of the week. This ensures that you won’t get bored of eating the same two or three meals over and over again.

2. Start a Daily Journaling Habit

Journaling is a powerful, accessible way to learn more about yourself. It helps you purge and process all the wild thoughts bouncing around in your head. Plus, it provides a record of your life that you (or even future generations) can reflect on later.

Most people fail to stick with journaling because they overcommit. Writing 500 words or three pages or whatever each day sounds great. But in practice, it often ends up being too much to keep up with.

Instead, make journaling as low-effort as possible. Write just one sentence per day. If you feel like writing more, that’s great! But even if you only write one sentence a day for a year, you’ll have a lot to look back on.

Want to make things really easy? Pick up one of these one sentence per day journals . Or, if you prefer a digital approach, try one of these journaling apps .

3. Spend Time Outside Each Day

With so many of us working from home these days, it’s all too easy to spend an entire day without seeing the sun or feeling the breeze.

That’s why another good New Year’s resolution is to spend time outside each day. Of course, there may be days when the weather truly prohibits you from going outdoors. But generally, you should be able to spare 15-20 minutes for a walk around the block.

While it doesn’t matter when you go outside, I recommend taking a walk first thing each morning. This way, no matter what happens during the rest of the day, you’ve already gotten some exercise and time outdoors.

4. Take Off Your Headphones or Earbuds

Sometime last year, I realized I was spending the majority of my waking hours wearing headphones.

Whether I was working, exercising, or relaxing, I always had audio pumping into my ears. After reading this essay , I realized this constant stream of audio was isolating me from the real world and eliminating space for deep thought.

So I decided that, unless I’m working in a noisy environment or listening closely to music, I won’t wear headphones. I encourage you to give the same a try.

If nothing else, you’ll feel more connected to the physical world, no longer isolated from its sounds. But you may also find that your mind is calmer, your thoughts less chaotic. Without audio to fill the silence, your mind will be free to wander and wonder.

5. Get Up 30 Minutes Earlier

Mornings tend to be a chaotic and stressful time, especially if you have to commute to an office. But imagine how much calmer your morning would be if you got up 30 minutes earlier.

Within those extra 30 minutes, you’d have time to do things like:

  • Make delicious coffee
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Prepare a healthy lunch
  • Write a journal entry
  • Collect your thoughts for the workday ahead

What’s more, getting up 30 minutes earlier is a very achievable goal. All you have to do is go to bed 30 minutes earlier. This may mean one fewer episode of your favorite show each evening, but that’s a trivial price to pay for a calmer morning.

6. Nurture Your Friendships

We’ve talked a lot on this blog about how to make friends and improve your social skills . Just as important as making friends, however, is ensuring that your existing friendships remain strong.

Without regular care and attention, a friendship can begin to fade. To prevent this from happening, you must nurture your friendships.

This is especially important for friends you don’t see very often. For instance, one of my best friends lives several states away, and we only see each other in person once or twice per year. To keep this relationship from fading in the interim, I try to call him at least once per month and text him at least once per week.

Your situation will be different, of course. But whatever the circumstances, you can resolve to call, text, or otherwise check in with a cherished friend more often.

7. Read Books You Enjoy

“Read more books” is a classic New Year’s resolution. Some people even get more specific, resolving to read one book per month or 25 pages per day.

In my experience, these types of resolutions rarely last. Typically, this is because people try to force themselves to read books they don’t like.

Therefore, instead of resolving to read more books, resolve to only read books you enjoy . If you enjoy what you’re reading, you’ll naturally read more.

Don’t worry about what books you “should” read. Don’t worry about reading “deep” or “intellectual” books. Read what interests you ! Life is too short to force yourself to read books you hate.

8. Keep a Monthly Budget

Budgeting can change your life.

With a budget, you can:

  • Find extra money to pay down debt
  • Plan for large, future purchases (such as a downpayment on a home)
  • Discover ways to save money on everyday expenses
  • Remove the fear and stress from personal finances

If you’re not sure you can make or stick to a budget, I recommend checking out You Need a Budget (YNAB).

YNAB is the only app that’s made me excited about budgeting, and it could do the same for you. To learn more about YNAB, check out our full review .

9. Clean a Little Bit Every Day

Cleaning is one of life’s necessary evils. You know you’ll enjoy your space more when it isn’t dirty, but it takes forever to clean. So you put it off, and each day it gets a bit worse.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. If you resolve to clean a little bit every day, then your living space will never get to the point where it takes hours to clean.

Much of this comes down to smaller habits.

For instance, I have a rule that whenever I’m done eating, I must clear all the dishes and put them in the dishwasher. This prevents dishes from piling up around the house or in the sink, and it only takes a couple of minutes each day.

Or, take sweeping the floor. If you go without doing it for a week, the floor will get gross. But if you do it a bit every day, it will only take a few minutes.

It sounds simple, but making cleaning a quick, daily task will reduce your stress and mean that you rarely have to spend hours cleaning.

10. Do Something Active Every Day

Fitness and exercise goals are some of the most common New Year’s resolutions out there. While I encourage you to improve your fitness and spend more time exercising, many of these resolutions are destined to fail.

Typically, fitness resolutions fail because they’re too ambitious. Jogging every day sounds great, for example, but is that even realistic with your schedule? Or what if the weather’s bad and you can’t get outside?

Instead, I encourage you to make a simpler resolution: do something active every day. Because this is such a broad resolution, you have no excuse to skip it. No matter where you are, you can do something active. Even if it’s just taking the stairs or busting out some push-ups.

Note: I’m not saying that doing something active every day is a substitute for a regular fitness routine. But if you aren’t in the habit of exercising regularly, resolving to do something active each day is a much more realistic place to start than going to the gym three times per week.

11. Learn a New Piece of Software

Everyone thinks they need to learn to code . While coding is an extremely marketable skill, you’d often be better off learning to use an app that’s relevant to what you currently do.

My job, for instance, involves very little code. But I’d be lost if I didn’t know how to use:

  • Ahrefs (for keyword research)
  • WordPress (for formatting, publishing, and updating articles)
  • Notion (for project management)
  • Photoshop (for preparing images for articles)

Your job and field likely have their own “industry standard” apps. Resolve this year to learn one of these apps from scratch.

Or, if you’re already competent in all the apps you need, resolve to improve your skills in an app you already use.

Not only will this make you better at your current job, but it will also open you up to additional opportunities in your field.

12. Explore Your City

“Travel more” is another common New Year’s resolution. If you have the time and money, then go for it! But if your budget and time are more limited, remember that you can be a tourist in your city as well.

What does this look like? In general, it means seeing your city with fresh eyes. Put aside all your preconceptions and experience the city as if for the first time. Here are some activities that can help:

  • Go to a local museum (bonus points if they have information about your city’s history)
  • Visit a local landmark
  • Explore a part of town you’ve never visited
  • Eat at a new restaurant
  • Hang out at a local park
  • Get around by bike or foot (which let you slow down and observe the city)
  • Stay in an Airbnb or hotel in a different neighborhood

Besides helping you appreciate your city and shaking things up, you might even make a few new friends in the process of your exploration!

Resolve to Improve in 2023

New Year, New Me? 7 Most Popular Student Resolutions for 2023

2022 student resolutions

How many times have you made a New Year’s resolution in the new year only to let it fizzle out and die within a month or two? Don’t fret! It happens to the best of us. Student resolutions are often easy to make but can be hard to follow through with during the year. Are […]

How many times have you made a New Year’s resolution in the new year only to let it fizzle out and die within a month or two? Don’t fret! It happens to the best of us. Student resolutions are often easy to make but can be hard to follow through with during the year. Are you ready to change that?

Choose a resolution that will better your life as a student. You’ll be more invested in the change and will be more inclined to stick it out. If you’re not sure what that means, then browse this list of common student resolutions along with tips that will encourage you to commit to them.

1. Improve Grades

student resolutions grades

There are almost always student support and tutoring services available at colleges and universities to help you manage your academics. If you need study tips, drop-in services, and study groups to make a difference and lift your average, find out what your school offers and take advantage.

Sometimes improving your grades merely requires a better system. Invest in a good planner and use it. Dedicate blocks of time for studying or readings during your week and follow through with your plans. Study, focus, and make it happen !

2. Work on Health and Fitness

student resolutions fitness

Your tuition usually includes attendance fees for your school’s fitness facility. Take advantage of it since you’re paying for it anyway and create a fitness/nutrition plan that works for you. Don’t forget to also focus on your mental health. A lot of times, mental well-being is placed on the back burner to make room for assignments, essays, group projects, presentations, readings, and exams… (sound familiar?) but it’s important, so make your mental health a priority. Check into counselling and other student services offered by your school if it will help.

3. Get More Sleep

student resolutions sleep

I think we can all relate to this one. Sleep quality and the number of hours we get each night can make all the difference when it comes to alertness and our energy level. A better night’s rest will help you combat addictions to coffee and energy drinks (so you can save money) and will generally leave you feeling rejuvenated.

4. Make More Money

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

What you should really be asking is, “How do I budget?” Develop a reasonable monthly budget to use for textbooks, food, tuition, entertainment, rent, and savings and stick to it. Apply for bursaries and scholarships (you’d be surprised how many people don’t do this). If you need a little more assistance, consider a part-time job and contact your school’s career services office for on-campus opportunities. Also check out: 4 Types Of Financial Aid Students Can Count On for more information.

5. Find Some Balance

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

Learn how to balance the chaos of school with friends, fitness, and downtime. Yes , it’s possible. No , don’t argue with me. Use a planner to make your life easier by scheduling time for studying, entertainment, physical activity, and yes, even your social life. Balancing everything in your life will leave you feeling more energized and positive, so you’re less likely to procrastinate when it comes to working.

6. Gain New Skills

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

Why not try something completely new? Is there a club you’ve been thinking about joining or an elective course you’re not sure about enrolling in (but seems interesting)? Jump in and just do it as Nike advises.

  • You’ll learn something new.
  • You’ll make more connections and build relationships with people.
  • You might inherit new skills that could inadvertently land you a job.
  • What do you have to lose?

7. Plan for the Future

student resolutions future

What do you want to be when you grow up? This question was so common when we were kids, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop asking it once you reach post-secondary school. There’s a broad range of jobs available that we discover as we continue our education. Keep asking yourself, “what do I want to be when I grow up?” to figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life.

You’re constantly being reminded that what you do today can affect your future and what you want to do. Take a moment to evaluate your current relationships and determine whether they can assist you in some capacity or (to be blunt) if they are simply holding you back.

Consider applying for part-time jobs that are related to the field you intend to pursue once you are out of school. Student support and advising are often available at college and university, so take advantage of them to figure out your next steps after graduation.

2023 is a new year. This is a new beginning and a fresh start for some, but it can also mean improving something in your life. So, set a new goal for yourself and make your New Year’s student resolutions count.

In this article, we'll show you how to set priorities and realistic goals and some tricks and tips to ensure they're effective. Plus, we'll introduce you to a tool that will help you track your progress and stay on track.

Are you ready to make this your best year yet? Let's get started!

Are New Year's Resolutions Important for Students?

New year's resolutions have been a tradition for centuries. It dates back to ancient Babylonian times when people would make promises to their gods to earn good favor for the upcoming year.

While the origins of this tradition may have changed over time, the idea of setting goals and making positive changes at the start of a new year remains essential for many people.

New year's resolutions provide a fresh start. The turning of the calendar marks a new beginning, and it can be an excellent opportunity to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the future. This can be a powerful motivator for making positive changes in your life. It can inspire you to improve your health, relationships, and academics as a student.

New year's resolutions are essential for students, no matter how out-of-date they sound. Here's why you should have one in 2023:

Gives Direction and Purpose

New year's resolutions give you a sense of direction and purpose. By setting specific goals , you can focus your energy and effort on achieving them. This can help you feel more productive and fulfilled as you work towards something meaningful.

Keeps You Accountable

Setting new year's resolutions is an integral part of staying accountable to yourself. Committing to a specific goal and timeline makes you less likely to procrastinate or give up on it when the going gets tough.

Take Responsibility

New year's resolutions can help you take responsibility for your actions. You are no longer just living on autopilot but actively making choices about what you want to accomplish and then taking steps to achieve these goals.

Learn From Your Mistakes

New year's resolutions can help you learn from your mistakes. When you fail at reaching a goal, it is vital to take the time to reflect on what went wrong and then use this information as fuel for future success.

Meet New Challenges

One of the best things about making a new year's resolution is that it gives you a chance to try something new. This can be anything from learning a new language to finally taking that trip around the world you've been dreaming about.

Are New Year Resolutions Effective For Students?

A list of new year resolutions for students may include:

  • resolving to improve grades,
  • take on new challenges, or
  • develop new habits.

But are new year's resolutions effective in helping students reach their goals?

One common mistake students make with new year's resolutions is setting unrealistic or vague goals. For example, a student may resolve to "get better grades" without specifying what steps they will take to achieve this goal. This can lead to frustration and a lack of motivation when there is no progress.

Another mistake is not setting a clear timeline for achieving goals. You may have an excellent idea for a new year's resolution but quickly forget them when there is no plan for how and when you will achieve it.

To make your new year’s resolutions work this time, look out for these features:

Specific Goals

To make 2023 resolutions effective for students, it's essential to set realistic goals with clear steps for achieving them. This can help you stay motivated and on track to reach your goals. It's also helpful to have a support system, such as friends or teachers, who can provide encouragement and accountability.

Measurable Resolutions

Another feature of a compelling new year's resolution for students is to make it measurable. This can be as simple as setting a target grade. Or the number of extracurricular activities to participate in. By tracking progress, students can see their progress and stay motivated to continue working towards their goals.

Time-bound Resolutions

Another feature of a compelling new year resolution for students is to set a time limit. It's important to create deadlines for when specific actions are supposed to happen to avoid procrastination. For example, if your goal is to read more books this year, set aside specific times each week when you can do that activity.

Short-Term Goals

Setting small, realistic goals will help you achieve a larger resolution. For example, if you resolve to read more books this year, one short-term goal could be adding five minutes daily to reading time. Setting smaller goals helps students stay motivated and avoid being overwhelmed by the task.

Focus on Progress

You should be encouraged to focus on making progress toward your goals rather than comparing yourself against others or thinking about what could go wrong before it even happens.

13 New Year's Resolutions For Students In 2023 and How To Achieve Them

Now that you know what makes an effective new year resolution, it’s time to make one of your own.

Here are 13 specific New year resolutions for 2023 that can help you succeed as a student and some tips on how to achieve them:

1. Learn a new language

Being fluent in a second language can open up new opportunities in school and your future career. To achieve this resolution, consider enrolling in a language class or finding online resources to help you learn. Practice regularly, and try to immerse yourself in the language by listening to music or watching movies in the language you're learning.

2. Volunteer for a charity

Volunteering can be a rewarding experience and help build valuable skills such as teamwork and communication. Research l ocal charities and organizations that align with your interests and reach out to see how you can get involved.

3. Schedule time for exercise

Exercise is vital for physical and mental health and can help improve focus and concentration. Set aside a specific time each day or week to engage in physical activity, whether going for a walk, joining a sports team, or attending a fitness class.

4. Make flashcards for difficult material

Flashcards can be a helpful study tool, especially for memorizing subjects. Create flashcards for key terms, formulas, or concepts you need to learn. Use them to quiz yourself, and review them regularly to ensure you retain the information.

5. Create a schedule for class assignments

Managing your time effectively is crucial for success as a student. To achieve this resolution, create a schedule outlining when you will complete each class assignment, study for exams, or attend extracurricular activities. This will help you stay on track and avoid last-minute cramming.

6. Come to class prepared and ready to learn

Showing up to class prepared and engaged can help you get the most out of your education. Do your homework ahead of time, come to class with any necessary materials, and actively participate in discussions or activities.

7. Improve your social skills

Social skills can help you build relationships with your peers, teachers, and future employers. Start by practicing active listening, express your thoughts and ideas clearly, and be open to feedback and constructive criticism.

8. Improve time management skills

Students often struggle with managing their time and prioritizing tasks. Try setting a schedule or to-do list to improve your time management skills and stick to it. Use a planner or calendar to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and commitments. And don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

9. Learn to say no to distractions

Spending hours scrolling through social media or watching TV can be tempting in today's digital world. But these distractions can take away valuable study time and cause stress. To avoid distractions, set boundaries for yourself and limit your time on non-essential activities. And remember, it's okay to say no to things that don't align with your goals.

10. Spend time with family and friends

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of school and forget to spend time with the people who matter most. Resolve to prioritize relationships and spend quality time with family and friends. This can help reduce stress, improve mental health, and provide support when you need it most.

11. Find a mentor or coach

A mentor or coach can provide valuable guidance and support for achieving your goals. Look for someone with experience in your field of study or personal interest and ask them if they would be willing to meet with you periodically to offer advice and support. This can help you stay motivated and on track to achieve your goals.

12. Crush your fear of public speaking

Many students dread speaking in front of a group, but public speaking is a valuable skill to have. To overcome your fear, start small by speaking in front of a small group of friends or classmates. Practice your presentation beforehand, and remember to breathe and speak slowly. With time and practice, you'll be able to speak confidently in front of any audience.

13. Reduce stress

High levels of stress can affect a student's mental and physical health, as well as their academic performance. Resolving to reduce stress can improve overall well-being and help students perform better in school. Practice relaxation techniques , such as meditation or deep breathing, and use a task management tool to stay organized and prioritize their time.

To Wrap it Up

Setting New Year's resolutions as a student can be a great way to improve in 2023. By focusing on specific goals, such as improving grades, increasing productivity, and developing new skills, you can take control of your future and set yourself up for success.

Sometimes, it may be hard to focus on goals when everything is competing for your attention. It's not unusual, but don't give up! Try using a task management assistant like Alleo.ai. This AI-powered tool can help students stay focused and organized by providing personalized reminders, prioritizing tasks, and tracking progress.

For example, Alleo.ai  can remind students to study for an upcoming exam, prioritize their workload based on deadlines, and track their grades over time. This can help you stay on top of your goals and make the most of your time.

Overall, using New Year's resolutions and tools like Alleo.ai can be a powerful combination for students looking to improve in 2023 and beyond.

16 strategies for success in and out of the classroom..

Hello I'm Nik/Unsplash

It’s winter break and the cusp of a new year, and as a college professor I’m thinking about the new semester starting in a few weeks. I’ve been teaching for nearly three decades, and I still feel some fresh energy approaching a new academic year in the fall and a new semester for the spring. In August, we’re surrounded by a sense of back-to-school time that carries with it a more blank-slate feeling, the promise of an entirely new beginning, as well as the nervous anticipation of full-on transitions. Fast forward a few months, and the approach of the second semester typically has less of that hype, and less of the anxiety of getting settled, yet it presents us with new excitement and a different set of challenges. From my experience working with college students, here are some suggested New Year’s resolutions:

  • Reflect on what went well and what didn’t last semester, both academically and socially. Strategize as to how you can do more of what helped things go smoothly and successfully.
  • Commit to trying new things and taking risks. See if you can try something new every week. This could be a sport, a place to explore on or around campus or in the surrounding town, food, a healthy habit, etc.
  • Get to know a professor . This can make all the difference in how connected you feel to your intellectual work and the campus more generally, and this person might become someone with whom you stay in touch for years to come.
  • Approach and talk with someone you’ve never met . This needn’t be with any romantic intent, but rather just a way to extend yourself a bit and perhaps make a new friend.
  • Consider ways you might meet new people , especially if you spent the fall a bit too over-reliant on your roommates as your social circle. This might be through classes, clubs, Greek life, student organizations, intramurals, teams, etc.
  • Consider volunteering in the community . This can be meaningful and fun, and it can provide a way to meet new people. When I was in graduate school, I volunteered at a domestic violence agency where I really wanted to work, and it turned out that volunteering for just a few months led to a part-time paid position that lasted for years and led to multiple other professional opportunities that continue for me to this day.
  • Play a game with yourself and turn off your phone and put it away , or ask a trusted friend to hide it from you for an hour or two. See how much you can get done in that time. Or even try relaxing without scrolling.
  • Commit to using a calendar . I can’t begin to tell you how many students of mine reveal to me in office hours that they don’t use a calendar. It’s the first thing I ask about when students show that they’re having trouble with deadlines and project management . I always tell students to review all deadlines in all their syllabi and enter those in their calendar along with the date for when to begin the work. I show them how I do this using my own calendar. I also suggest that they enter in the other stuff of life, and then they can gain a clearer picture of which weeks they can expect to be fuller or freer and flexible and then plan accordingly. They can see where they have blocks of time to work and play, and it can create a more spacious feeling.
  • Carefully read the entire syllabus for each class to know what’s expected of you, and ask questions if there is something you don’t understand.
  • If you did poorly in a course and are re-taking it, make an appointment with your professor to discuss how you can begin again, have a fresh start, and best improve this time around. I’ve had students who never do this and even when I reach out do not respond. Unsurprisingly, they fail again. Students who take the initiative as I described often turn things around. Just last semester, a student took my class again and earned a B when the first time she had failed. I was thrilled for her, and she was rightfully proud of herself for the new strategies she implemented that made such a huge difference.
  • Consider keeping a journal. You need not have to feel obligated to do this daily but it can help with expressing your feelings and thoughts. It can also be a place to express gratitude or track your goals .
  • Seek help right away when you find yourself slipping. This is true with academics and seeing your professor and a tutor, and it’s true with your emotional life and seeing a counselor if you need a professional sounding board and resources.
  • Think about how you want to design your summer. Will the summer involve an unpaid or paid internship, a part-time or full-time job, travel, staying at college, going home, or living somewhere else entirely? How might you engage in activities now that help you secure some plans for a dream summer? Perhaps you will want to consider writing a solid resume, networking, making appointments for informational interviews, attending career fairs, etc. You might take advantage of what the office of career services at your college has to offer and meet one of their counselors to discuss your hopes and dreams .
  • Think about how, when encountering a problem, you might first rely on yourself and your own inner resources before contacting your parents. See what you’re able to handle on your own first. I think the same thing about class questions; it is always apparent to me who has tried to find answers on their own first and who is just emailing me because of a knee-jerk response and asking questions about things that are clearly spelled out in multiple places. It can feel really good, and can build your confidence , to at least try it on your own first.
  • Evaluate your friendships and any other intimate relationships . Are the people with whom you’re interacting fulfilling for you and giving your life meaning, or are they sabotaging you in any way? Consider how to strengthen the relationships that feed you, and let go of the ones that don’t serve you and your well-being.
  • Commit to self-care. Is there a healthy habit you’re curious about and imagine you’d benefit from doing regularly? Perhaps it’s meditation , yoga, reading, writing, painting, taking a walk or run, getting better sleep, learning to cook, etc. Maybe you will remember something you loved to do as a child and since abandoned. You might consider ways to return to that activity you enjoyed.

New Year's resolutions

Learn how to write about your New Year's resolutions.

Do the preparation task first. Then read the text and tips and do the exercises.

Write about your New Year's resolutions for the coming year. Before you start, plan what you are going to include and think about who is going to read it.

My New Year's resolutions

I like to start every year with my New Year's resolutions. Then I read them next 1 January and see how well I did!

Here are my resolutions this year.

1. Get fit!!

I say this every year but I hope writing it in public will make it more real. I'm aiming for three runs a week – I think I can do it! I think a fitness tracking app might help me achieve it. Or I could find a running partner. If anyone who's reading this wants to be my partner, let me know!

2. Save 10 per cent of my salary a month

Having no savings is starting to worry me and 10 per cent is realistic. It's not too much, but it's not too little that I won't see it add up. I'll put the money into a special bank account that will make it grow … Actually, I don't know much about that so maybe my next resolution should be to find out how to invest money!!

3. Cook more

I'd like to start inviting friends for dinner and cooking for them. I think once a month is a good plan. By the end of the year I want to have five dishes I can cook really well so people will say, 'Have you ever had Darren's delicious cooking?' Who wants to be my first guest?

  • Before you start a writing task, make a plan. First, write down lots of ideas you could include. Then choose the best and most interesting ones.
  • Don't write all your ideas in one section. Make one section for each idea. Write a heading for each section to show the reader what it's about.
  • Think about who is going to read the text and choose the style accordingly. For your classmates, use an informal and clear style.
  • Keep your reader interested by talking directly to them, e.g. by asking a question.
  • When you have finished your writing, read it and check it for mistakes.

Do you make New Year's resolutions? What will next year's be?

Language level

My New Year's resolutions*. This year my resolutions are focused on personal growth, health and creativity. 1. To lead a healthy lifestyle: This is a classic resolution, but it's also one that I'm really committed to. My goal is to incorporate more movement into my daily routine. Whether it's a brisk walk or taking the stairs instead of the lift. I also plan to make healthier food choices, focusing on whole grains, fruit and vegetables. 2) Travelling the world I have always had a thirst for adventure and a love of exploring new places. This year, I've decided to travel more, whether it's for a weekend trip to a nearby city or a long trip to distant lands. 3) Read more books Reading books is a great way to broaden your horizons, learn new things about the world and yourself, and develop your imagination and creativity. It can also be just a pleasant pastime and a way to relax. These are just a few of my New Year's resolutions for the coming year. I know they will not be easy to achieve, but I am determined to stay focused, motivated and celebrate my successes along the way. I believe that by setting these goals and working towards them, I can make this year one of the best of my life.

My New Year Resolutions By Ensiye I want to write out my resolutions which I decided to do at the beginning of the year.

1- Make more specialist in my job I planned to study for my job every day. I'm a React developer. I prepared a list of technologies that I have to learn. I'm starting to learn them based on their priorities.

2- More flexible! Thank God I'm so fit but I have made up my mind to be more flexible. I have found an app with the name "Split in 30 days". It's so cool and has a lot of workouts. I'm planning to practice five days a week at home. Since flexibility workouts must be done in a short time (maximum 35 min) but steadily, I'm supposed to do it by the end of the year.

3- Get advanced in speaking English I would like to practice my speaking English for about one to two hours a day. Because, the stronger I am in speaking, the more likely I will be better at listening.

In my country, we are in the middle of the year, It means I'm doing these plans right now. let me tell you what has happened by now!!

* Make more specialist in my job I have done as my plan by now and I am so determined to continue that. The deeper knowledge I gain, the more confident I get.

** More flexible! I have been practicing split for the last six months. It seems as if I get addicted to doing it because it makes all my muscles and tendons stretch and release tension in them. It really makes my day having practice with music.

*** Get advanced in speaking English That's great, Besides of speaking, I was led to practice writing here and I realized that writing would stabilize the structure of the grammar in our mind. I'm happy for that.

I haven't written about my new year's resolutions before, but now in July, I'll do it because I'm able to fill my dreams. 1.- I'm gonna improve my english level because I must find a good job before the year ends. Being that I'm studying international affairs and in my major its necessary know many languages. 2.- I've been struggling with food since three years ago, as a goal I'll go with a nutrition specialist to receive recovery, I need gain weight and recover my life. 3.-I wanna be happier, for me and my family, practicing english everyday helped me to feel more busy. Finally, I'll have a source of income for doing to contribute my family costs is for that, that I need to find a good job and be happy, I really deserve this.

New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing (MADE EASY!) for Middle School

new years resolution essay ideas for middle school language arts

Happy New Year! The return from winter break in January offers the perfect backdrop to get students thinking about their academic and personal goals for the year. I love to take the time to challenge my students to think about their work so far and where they hope to be by the end of the school year. I like to begin the year with a New Year’s resolution essay writing unit where we work on goal-setting and resolve to do things that will help us to be an even better version of ourselves.

There are plenty of unique ways to teach essay writing, but I have found success with the BING BANG BONGO essay template. The concept is easy for students to understand. Here is an overview of the steps:

  • Identify your topic, and brainstorm the three main points or ideas you will use to craft your essay.
  • Introduction with a Topic Sentence . What is your piece about? What three pieces of information do you want to share with the reader based on the topic of your piece?
  • BING Paragraph 1 : What is the first idea you shared in your topic sentence? Your first sentence should introduce that first idea. Follow this with two or three supporting sentences, and close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BANG Paragraph 2 : What is the second idea you shared in your topic sentence? Two or three supporting sentences should follow the opening sentence in introducing that second idea. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BONGO Paragraph 3 : What is the third idea you shared in your topic sentence? Again, clearly state the third idea in your opening sentence and write two or three supporting sentences. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • Conclusion: Concluding Sentence: Bring your piece to a close. Restate the purpose of the essay, but do not add any new information. Make sure you complete your thoughts so the reader walks away with a full understanding of your points.

If you are interested in a complete essay writing resource that is based on the BING, BANG, BONGO strategy, check out my New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit , which can be used as a printable unit or integrated in Google Classroom.

New Year's Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit

To kick off the brainstorming process for this lesson plan, I start by discussing commercials students have noticed on TV. Typically, they will confirm they have seen lots of commercials for gym memberships and weight-loss companies. I ask them why they think these are so prominent during January, and they respond that people are often setting goals at the beginning of a new year.

From there, we create a brainstorm cloud where students list ways they could improve themselves. Some examples are: practicing harder, putting more effort into school work, listening more to a parent, being more responsible, etc. Depending on the suggestions you receive, it can also be helpful to explain the difference between setting a goal and achieving a dream.

Next, I have the students decide on the three goals they want to work on. Those get added to their brainstorm organizer, and we then move on to writing.

resolution brainstorm organizer

Next, we move on to creating our topic sentences. Sometimes it is best for teachers to share examples of their own topic sentences first, so students understand how to begin organizing their writing. I usually model my own resolutions in front of the class so we can go through the thought process together. My three goals for this project were: saving more money, being less quick-tempered, and saying only respectful things about others.

Once you establish topic sentences, show students how your BING paragraph (in my case) would be all about saving money, my BANG paragraph would be all about being less quick-tempered, and my BONGO paragraph would be all about saying only respectful things about others.

Students always LOVE to hear the stories behind my resolutions, and you’ll never face a shortage of suggestions to help you achieve your resolutions!

BING BANG BONGO essay writing paragraphs

In addition to having three strategies, I require each paragraph to include an opening sentence introducing the resolution and a concluding sentence bringing the paragraph to a close.

On the second day, I like to review our previous instructions and get to work on our introductions and conclusions. Some teachers may find this strategy backwards, but I have found it can be tricky for students to find a place to begin. With each of their body paragraphs completed, students have a better grasp of how they need to grab the reader’s attention and then bring the work to a close.

I often use the example of crime and drama shows when discussing the introductory paragraph. Often, the writers open the show with a shocking image or event to grab the audience’s attention and keep them glued to the show. This is the same type of statement we want to make with the first sentences in our resolution essay.

For the conclusions, I share how we are bringing the piece to a close and sending the reader on their way. This is NOT the time to share new information, but instead to give the reader the chance to reflect on what we have shared. At this point, the students will have completed their organizers and are ready for the first draft of their resolution essay.

As part of the review process, I typically have a writing conference with each student. The focus here is: mechanics-CUPS-capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We also discuss organization and the use of transitions in their sentences. Here is an example editing chart, which is included in the Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit from above.

CUPS Editing Chart - capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling

After all edits are in place, students rewrite their final drafts and publish them on their Chromebooks or display them in the classroom. Not everyone will be interested in sharing their resolutions, so choose which format makes the most sense for your group.

Essay writing is a skill that students can learn in the middle grades and will carry with them through college. Sadly, this wasn’t a skill I learned until high school, but with common core standards, writing extensive or elaborate pieces is now a requirement for our students at all levels, specifically in the middle grades.

For this reason, I created the Resolutions Made Easy writing resource. I wanted to help my students construct a thorough essay that required them to write 5-paragraphs effectively and successfully. It provides all the materials you need to walk students through the brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing stages.

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

200 New Year’s Resolution Ideas for Career, Work, and Personal Growth

A New Year’s Resolution is a Filipino tradition. Or at least, that’s how Filipino students deemed it. Every January of each year, on the first day of class, students from elementary, high school, and college declare their New Year’s resolutions.

When I was in high school, I wrote my New Year’s Resolution essays (as it was often required) during Christmas breaks. It is still cool to write resolutions these days for fun.

I do Impact Goals, Quarterly Goals, and Monthly Projects, which are better than most New Year’s Resolutions. I will share these with you later if you are interested. An excellent support to your New Year’s resolutions is  3 Words . Find out how to do it.

I am publishing this three days before the New Year. So you will have plenty of time to write your New Year’s Resolution or do the alternatives.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas

Typically, people get a pen and a piece of paper to write one, two, three, or even ten New Year’s resolutions. They write down whatever comes to mind.

A few get post-it notes and Sharpie pens. They write on each note one resolution. They may come up with dozens. Then, they pick the top ten they want to do next year.

I separate my New Year’s resolutions for family and work.

I use a mind map when I make resolutions. It is creative. I write the year, then encircle it. I think of three words. For work, my three words for 2023 are transformation, experience, and dollars. Then, I will generate more ideas from each word.

Another exercise that I do, which I can do any month of the year, is Stop, Continue, and Start.

Most people consider the brainstorming session as the only step to writing a resolution. This is why most of the resolutions don’t have staying power. Later, I will show you ways to make your resolutions compelling.

If you are looking for New Year’s Resolution ideas, these will help you. Open each accordion pane to find resolutions that may inspire you

More than half of those who do New Year’s Resolution pay attention to physical well-being. Probably, because our physical health is most obvious among the many things that need change.

New Year's Resolution is a Fresh Start

What is a New Year’s Resolution?

A New Year’s Resolution is a declaration of what a person intends or resolves to do at the beginning of the year. Typically, people decide to stop doing undesirable traits or behaviors, continue doing good practices, and start working on personal goals or improving behaviors.

When you ask Filipinos, more than half will say they have New Year’s Resolution. About 1/3 say that they have written resolutions. You will find 100 examples of New Year’s Resolutions below.

Nearly half of those who don’t make New Year’s Resolution say it does not work.

Importance of New Year’s Resolution

Most people think that they need to do more these past years. The Covid-19 pandemic, for two years, made us anxious about the future. I remember that the New Year of 2021 was the first time most people stayed home. In January 2022, we recorded the highest number of Covid-19 infections.

But 2023 promises a better year. And once again, people talk about New Year’s Resolutions. And that’s good news.

There are mixed opinions as to the importance of resolutions. And I understand why.

Some people failed to continue what they started. Or they missed many opportunities of doing what they believed they should have done many New Year’s resolutions ago.

In 1996, Carlo declared that he would enroll again to finish his Master of Arts in Teaching. It was always a part of his New Year’s Resolutions. This year, he decided that pursuing it was of no use. The 30 units he earned will no longer be credited. He procrastinated. And procrastination sealed his fate, he believed.

A friend made a New Year’s Resolution to start jogging five years ago. So on January 4 last year, she started jogging around our neighborhood. She continued doing it for 15 more days. Then, she decided to pause for a week because of an important assignment. The one week became months. Yesterday, she said that she’d start again.

Thirty years ago, I “resolved” to write a book. I began with full enthusiasm, then eventually stopped. In Filipino, we call this habit Ningas Kugon. However, a friend commissioned me two years ago to write a book. I wrote that book in 16 days. I am confident I can write at least one book in 2023.

All New Year’s resolutions are aspirations for personal growth and development. And though you don’t have to wait for January 1 to start thinking about choosing the right things to do, a New Year’s resolution, as a tradition, reminds us about second chances, and the simple act of declaring our intentions helps us think deeply about the future.

Panata sa Bagong Taon

For Filipinos, a new year is a promise of a new life. It is more than just a day after December 31.

It is a fresh start.

In Filipino, New Year’s Resolution means panata sa bagong taon. It is not just an aspiration or a wish. It is a vow.

It is a fresh start. Whatever happened last year and the years before that have no hold on our future. We can choose to live the life we want.

Most New Year’s Resolutions aren’t fulfilled because of misunderstandings. But we will start behaving differently when we fully embrace that a new year is a fresh start and a resolution is a vow.

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

Why Some New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

I have already given you three reasons why New Resolutions don’t work. And I have also given you an idea of why it works. So allow me to expound and expand.

Procrastination

The lack of willpower makes us delay. Procrastination is a silent killer. It murders our dreams without our notice.

People think that there is always tomorrow. We only have today; tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

If something is significant, it must be done today.

A resolution is a vow; it is not just a wish. A wish is something that may happen someday. A vow is your business today.

Ningas Kugon

Have you noticed that lifetime gym memberships are sold for a 50 percent discount during December and January? That’s because many people overestimate themselves.

A lifetime gym membership often gets used in three months.

If you are in Quezon Memorial Circle in the early mornings, you will see thousands of joggers. Some of them start at 5 am. But, during the first six weeks of the year, you’ll notice that the numbers are five times more than usual.

Ningas kugon is a lot better than procrastination. Starting something is already tricky. But success is measured by how we finished, not by how we started our games.

Ningas Kugon is often the result of a lack of commitment, discipline, and momentum.

Lack of Commitment

A committed person dedicates his time to a cause that truly matters to him. Those who cannot commit fail again and again.

A committed person displays patience, persistence, and perseverance. You can only be that person when you believe you can make things happen. Without that belief, there is no urgency. Without that belief, you will allow your fear to delay or stop you as soon as you face your first challenge.

Consider that a resolution is a vow to your future self.

Lack of Discipline

I see that even the most motivated people need to honor their resolutions. They can start, but they need to learn how to finish.

They work on many things but only sometimes on the most important thing.

A person with discipline does what they value most every day. They don’t allow their circumstances to dictate their actions.

New Year’s resolutions are good for us. They are part of the solution. Unfortunately, they don’t work when people don’t have the discipline to execute them.

Lack of Momentum

People need more momentum to finish what they start. There needs to be more than just doing the first step to walking a thousand miles. You need to follow the first with another step, and you need to keep moving until you reach a thousand miles.

Followthrough makes a breakthrough.

To create momentum, you need focus, consistency, and action.

By telling you why resolutions often do not work, can you tell how to make them work?

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

People often write these New Year’s Resolution ideas. As I have mentioned, I used different methods to come up with my list, and brainstorming is just the first stage. If you will only copy any of these resolutions, it is more likely that you’ll do a ningas kugon.

Resolutions that get done are clear and compelling.

I will show you different ways to write clear and compelling New Year’s Resolutions.

My 3 Words for 2023

new year resolution 2023 for students essay

Daig ng Maagap ang Masipag: Be A Proactive Hard Worker

These are the frequently asked questions that seldom get answers. If you want to get a better appreciation of these answers, you can read the whole article (if you have not yet done that).

Becoming a good person, working harder, and being more health conscious are Filipinos’ top 3 New Year’s resolutions. Becoming a good person is the most common topic in students’ New Year’s Resolution Essays. Working harder is our solution to having a good life. And being more health conscious may mean eating fruits and vegetables, losing weight, or gaining weight.

New Year’s Resolutions fail because of procrastination, ningas kugon, lack of clarity, lack of commitment, lack of discipline, and lack of momentum. Unfortunately, these are the same reasons my many goals fail too. Declaring what you resolve to stop, start, and continue doing is not enough; you need to follow through. A resolution, by definition, is a vow to do what you want to do no matter what.

The Tagalog for New Year’s Resolution is Panata sa Bagong Taon. A panata is a vow. For Filipinos, a new year celebration represents a fresh start. We vow to work harder to enjoy abundant lives.

Many people have changed their lives because they stick to their New Year’s resolutions. They kept their eyes on their aspirations and stuck to them. Though most who made New Year’s Resolutions stop working on them after six weeks, the problem is not in the resolutions but in the resolution of the person to make them happen. The intention to make change happen is the first step, which is a significant step to making change happen.

New Year’s Resolution Essay (Example)

As I have said, when I was in school, we were required to write our New Year’s Resolution essays in 200 words. I typically write more than that.

One way to write an essay is by using CONTINUE, STOP, and START. It is a very simple format that you anyone can follow.

The Year 2023 is a promise of a fresh start and bouncing forward. The last two years have been difficult because I could not go out. I was afraid, physically and psychologically.

The pandemic scare is not yet over. New variants of the virus appear. But for most of us vaccinated, there is confidence that we can finally fight the unknown.

There are things I know that I can change. And there are things that I must continue doing. My New Year’s Resolution is a manifesto, a declaration of what I want to continue, stop, and start doing in 2023.

CONTINUE I will continue to improve my skills in public speaking. Though I have been speaking for many years and earning money from it, there are many things that I need to learn. Public speaking turned my life around. And though there are many other opportunities to grow my business, I will continue speaking to inspire people and grow my business.

STOP I will stop spending time on Facebook, debating political issues with strangers, diehard supporters, and trolls. As much as I wanted to educate people and share with them what I know as a student of politics, I was doing it wrong.

Debating with strangers will not help. Adding my voice to a thousand who do not want to listen to each other won’t add value. I am not a follower. I am not a watcher.

I am a leader. And my platform is on the stage. I speak to lead, not just to add my voice.

I will expand my network to bring my message to many people. I will speak in schools to share my message with students and educators. I will talk at associations, conferences, and in company assemblies.

I will share a message of hope in my team-building programs, leadership training, and public seminars.

I will start speaking to change the world.

Mission Possible 2023

Your mission is to write your own New Year’s Resolution. Keep in mind that it is not just a wish. It is a panata , a vow that you have to your future self.

I recommend that you make your resolution visual. Take it seriously. Convert it into a personal development plan. Execute it. Then, teach others how to do it well.

Short Essay: New Year Resolution

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay provides an excellent opportunity for self-reflection, goal-setting, and personal growth. As the calendar turns and a new year begins, many individuals embrace the tradition of making resolutions, which are promises or commitments to improve oneself or achieve specific goals. Crafting an essay about New Year’s resolutions allows us to delve deeper into our aspirations, motivations, and plans for the future. It prompts us to evaluate our past experiences, identify areas for improvement, and outline concrete steps towards personal development.

Table of Contents

New Year Resolution Essay Tips

Reflect on the past year: Begin by reflecting on the experiences, achievements, and challenges you encountered in the previous year. Consider what you learned, what you would like to improve, and what goals you want to set for the upcoming year.

Set specific and realistic goals: Choose resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). Avoid vague or overly ambitious resolutions that may be difficult to achieve. Instead, focus on specific actions or behaviors that can be realistically implemented in your life.

Prioritize your resolutions: Identify the most important resolutions that align with your values, aspirations, and personal growth. It’s better to focus on a few meaningful goals rather than overwhelming yourself with an extensive list.

Provide context and personal anecdotes: Share personal stories or anecdotes that illustrate why each resolution is important to you. This will add depth and authenticity to your essay, allowing the reader to connect with your experiences and motivations.

Outline your action plan: For each resolution, outline the steps or strategies you plan to take to achieve it. Break down your goals into manageable tasks and establish a timeline or milestones to track your progress. This demonstrates your commitment and shows that you have thoughtfully considered the path to achieving your resolutions.

Discuss potential challenges and solutions: Acknowledge potential obstacles or challenges you may face while pursuing your resolutions. Address how you plan to overcome them and develop strategies to stay motivated and resilient in the face of setbacks.

Emphasize personal growth and self-reflection: Discuss how your resolutions contribute to your personal growth, well-being, and overall happiness. Reflect on the positive changes you anticipate in your life as a result of achieving these goals.

Be honest and authentic: Your essay should reflect your genuine aspirations and beliefs. Avoid writing what you think others want to hear and instead express your true intentions and values.

Edit and revise: Once you have written your essay, review it for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Edit out any unnecessary details or repetition, ensuring that your ideas flow logically.

Conclusion: Conclude your essay by summarizing your resolutions and reaffirming your commitment to achieving them. End on a positive note, expressing optimism and excitement for the new year.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to prioritize my physical and mental well-being. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of daily life. By making a conscious effort to exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and practice mindfulness, I aim to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of my physical and mental health will not only enhance my overall well-being but also provide me with the energy and resilience necessary to tackle life’s challenges.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

In conclusion, the start of a new year holds immense potential for growth and positive change. Through my resolutions to prioritize my well-being, expand my knowledge, and foster stronger connections, I am committed to embracing personal development and striving for a more fulfilling life. While resolutions may not always be easy to achieve, I am determined to approach them with dedication, perseverance, and a mindset open to learning from both successes and setbacks. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am excited about the possibilities that the new year holds and the person I can become through embracing growth and positive change.

By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Additionally, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our own needs. However, I believe that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity. I will make a conscious effort to engage in activities that nourish my body, mind, and soul. This may include regular exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply allowing myself time to rest and rejuvenate. By prioritizing self-care, I aim to create a solid foundation for overall well-being and resilience.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace personal growth by stepping out of my comfort zone. Growth often occurs when we challenge ourselves and push beyond familiar boundaries. I will seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills, whether it’s taking on a new project at work, enrolling in a course, or engaging in meaningful conversations with people who possess different perspectives. By embracing discomfort and embracing the unknown, I believe I can unlock my full potential and continue evolving as an individual.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

In conclusion, New Year’s resolutions offer a pathway to personal transformation. Through cultivating gratitude, prioritizing self-care, embracing growth, and making a positive impact, I am committed to embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. While the road may be challenging at times, I am determined to stay focused, resilient, and open to the opportunities that lie ahead. As the New Year unfolds, I am excited to see the person I can become and the positive changes I can bring to my own life and the world around me.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #3

As the New Year unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the past and envisioning a future filled with growth and self-improvement. This year, I am determined to prioritize balance and mindfulness in every aspect of my life through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

Moreover, I am committed to practicing mindfulness in my daily life. Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. I will incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating into my routine. By cultivating a heightened sense of awareness and living in the present, I hope to reduce stress, increase focus, and find greater joy in the simple pleasures of life.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, I resolve to foster a spirit of gratitude and kindness. Each day, I will make an effort to express gratitude for the blessings in my life and extend acts of kindness to others. Whether it’s through a simple smile, a heartfelt thank-you, or a charitable act, I believe that small gestures can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

In conclusion, my New Year’s resolutions revolve around embracing balance and mindfulness in all aspects of my life. By prioritizing work-life balance, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-reflection, embracing sustainability, and fostering gratitude and kindness, I am committed to nurturing my well-being, personal growth, and contributing to a better world. As the New Year begins, I am excited to embark on this transformative journey, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to the balanced, mindful, and fulfilled life I aspire to lead.

1. Essay on My New Year Resolution 2023 For Students

We are humans with good and bad bundled together. Washing away unwanted habits from us and cultivating new and positive habits and disciplines as a part of life is necessary.Setting New Year Resolution is a good move to renew ourselves year after year.

What makes a perfect New Year Resolution? An idea that shapes and reflects you in a better way can be considered a New Year Resolution. As students, we should refine our thoughts, cultivate good habits and enhance our personality every year.

As it is widely believed that New year is a chance for many men to get rid of some old habits and bring positive and productive changes in their day to day lives. People from all walks of life set target and make resolutions in order to lead happy, content, peaceful and prosperous life.

Resolutions are often made to do away with bad and useless activities. All activities that let go time unproductive and yield into nothing are erased and replaced into new activities that never go in vain and bring productive changes. It’s very hard to avoid rampant activities that destroy our lives.

I am a student, to me time is the most precious thing. If I will kill time now, it will kill me tomorrow. My new year resolutions are enlisted below.

1) Earlier to bed and will rise early. 2) Get organized. 3) Learn something new. 4) Exercise regularly 5) Stop procrastinating 6) Try to be more assertive 7) Eat healthy foods 8) Enjoy every moment of life 9) Help others specially needy people 10) Reducing unproductive use of time.

In order to attain my above mentioned resolutions and goals I will bring many changes in my day to day. One of the biggest cause of procrastination is excessive use of social media specially Facebook, Whats App, Twitter etc. Apart from it I will limit the time I spend in front of the television.

Instead of watching television excessively I will try to find a sport that I like and play that game in order to keep myself fit and smart. A good student is known by his behavior and character. I will be respectful to my parents, teachers and elders because respecting and obeying elders is counted in good manners.

Good manners makes our personality. These changes will enhance my personality. My New Year resolutions will not only help me to eliminate my bad habits and adopt good habits but it will also make my future bright and make me successful at every junction of life.

2. Short Paragraph on New Year Resolution for Students

Every student often set resolutions on New Year. Basically a New Year resolution is made when one wants to correct the mistakes they have done the past year or do something in a more organized manner.

Students specially set their objectives regarding their studies and to brighten their future. A good student always learns lessons from the mistakes committed in the present or past year and on the eve of New year pledges to oneself to rectify all mistakes once did in the face of ocean of other activities.

A student often procrastinate studies and uses time carelessly and indulges in the wanton activities which adversely affect their studies. It is very necessary for a student to set the target every year and try every waking moment to get the desired and set target.

Every student must dream to do something productive because dreaming and materializing dreams is akin to success. I am also a student and being a student I have also made resolutions before, but just like anybody else, I too break it up. But this time I am going to stick to my resolutions and make sure that I change myself.

I have noted down a few resolutions that I would like to take this year and stick onto them. The most important of all is to be organized. I never have the habit of organizing my work and therefore end up in incomplete homework and projects.

So this year I plan to be more systematic and organized, so that I finish my work on time and do not keep pending, the works assigned to me.Secondly I would like to be a good reader.

I have heard that reading is a good habit, but I hardly take the time to read, even if I have time. So this time I have decided that I would spend some time in reading books that would improve my knowledge and interest in reading. Another area that I would like to improve myself is with the excess time spent on the internet.

Hours together I sit in front of the system, though I know it is just wasting my time unnecessarily. I have decided to cut down the time I use for surfing and make it more productive, rather than just visiting social networking sites and chatting.

Along with the internet, the other electronic item that has addicted me is the cell phone. I spent hours talking over the phone, not realizing the harmful effects it causes and waste my time and money. I have decided to cut it down and make good use of time.

This time, I am determined to stick to my resolutions and get myself corrected to be a more better student , both for myself, and my family and to the society.

3. Speech on New Year Resolutions for Students

My dear students as you know that every new year reminds us that time is not static, time passes silently, it never stops. As it is said that time and tide waits for none . Dear students wake up from sound slumber of procrastination and carelessness. You are the architect of the nation and you are the future of the world. On the occasion of New Year I will insist each and everyone of you to set new year resolutions.

Setting new year resolutions will revive and renew you into a better student. I have remained student and have came across through your phase of life. Time is the greatest weapon in your hands, if you will make good use of your time it will transmute you into gold.

It’s the very time that matters more than anything else in life, realization of the importance of time won’t strike your minds now because you are surrounded and indulged in many activities that sounds beneficial to you, actually these wanton activities of yours will not avail you in future.

Time is a healer and teacher, now or then it will teach you a lesson which neither any teacher nor any book would had taught you so far. So my dear students do not murder your time mercilessly, stop running behind all unnecessary things and get rid of all useless activities and equip yourself with the productive use of time.

Persistence and regularity at work is key to success. If you desire to be successful, value your time and be complete your tasks within stipulated time.

It’s very necessary for a student to set new year resolution because new year resolution is nothing but a way to improve and enhance oneself. Without a solid and sound resolution you won’t be able to accomplish your goals, shun all negative moves of your past and start a new journey with firm faith and determination, whatever you desire and aspire to attain will fall into your lapse.

In the end I will suggest you that this year instead of setting yourself for disappointment with vague goals, try setting structured and traceable smart goals. Your goals must be realistic, attainable, specific and achievable.

What Students Are Saying About New Year’s Resolutions

We invited teenagers to weigh in on the practice of setting goals on Jan. 1 and then tell us what plans, if any, they have for 2024.

An illustration of people standing in rows, holding up and joining their arms in a repeating pattern that looks like many hearts.

By The Learning Network

“What will you do — right now, this week, this month — to make a better world?” Roger Rosenblatt asks in the guest essay “ This Year, Make a Resolution About Something Bigger Than Yourself. ” Rather than making the self-oriented promises typical of New Year’s resolutions, he suggests turning our attention to others.

“Lend a hand,” he writes. “Offer a word of comfort or inspiration or support or love. Donate money or, most valuable of all, time. There are so many ways to move this world, right within reach.”

We asked teenagers about their experiences with New Year’s resolutions and what they thought of Mr. Rosenblatt’s challenge. Some were inspired by it, while others said self-improvement was just as important. They also shared their own intentions for this year that may move the world, in ways big and small.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the conversation on our writing prompts this week, including students from Dubiski Career High School in Grand Prairie, Texas; St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia ; and Mumbai .

Please note: Student comments have been lightly edited for length.

Students shared their thoughts on New Year’s resolutions.

At first, I used to believe that New Year’s resolutions were a ridiculous idea. I thought, “Why would I wait for the whole year to end to make a change in my life?” I still believe that if I want to make a change or improvement in my life, I should start today; however, I often find myself struggling with motivation, keeping myself disciplined, and being committed to my goals … Therefore, I realized that New Year’s resolutions are a good way to improve for several reasons. First, it became a worldwide “tradition” that almost everyone gets involved in. It is encouraging to be surrounded by people who are also trying to learn from their mistakes, cultivate new habits, and strive for better versions of themselves. Also, setting goals at the beginning of the year gives us the sense that we still have the opportunity to do better and that we have another chance to progress.

— Jassica, Fountain Valley High School

As another year goes by, I am left once again to reflect on how I have changed and grown as a person. I have grown tremendously individually over 2023, and my life has become much better as a result. I have also been able to do things I love, and I have improved my time management skills, leaving more time for volunteering and charity work. New Year’s resolutions always give me something to work towards, and always are greatly beneficial in the long run for me. Without these goals, I find it hard to make progress and improve my life for the better.

— Megan, North Carolina

Coming from a Chinese family we’ve always celebrated Lunar New Year instead of New Years. On Lunar New Year kids receive red envelopes with cash from their elders. Lunar New Year is celebrated usually in February because it follows a different calendar. I’ve always wanted to try doing New Year’s resolutions, but always forgot. Since the idea of resolutions is so common where I live, it has influenced me to also set goals.

— Elina C., Julia R. Masterman

I’ve never engaged in New Year’s resolutions; they seem like unfulfilled pledges, easily forgotten by the next year. While they might be commendable goals for those who excel at pursuing and achieving them, I’ve never been among that group. Generally, I believe resolutions aren’t suited for everyone, like myself, but they could serve as admirable objectives for others to attain.

— Kendall, Prep

They also gave advice for making and sticking with your goals.

As far as my personal relationships with New Year’s resolutions go, I almost always accomplish every single one of them without too much difficulty. This is mainly because when I create my resolutions each year, I create them with either what I’m on track to do this year in mind, or the bare minimum. Now while this might not sound like the healthiest relationship to have with your goals, I still find it to work fine, because the new year isn’t the one and only time each year to create goals for yourself: you can do it any day. And with this in mind, I usually change and adjust my goals as the year goes on, but if I’m not able to go above the bare minimum I set for myself, I don’t end up feeling bad about it.

— Charles, J.R.Masterman School

I am so excited for 2024 to say the least. I have never really made new year resolutions, but this year, I planned my entire year by setting realistic, healthy, goals and each month I am taking a baby step to achieve my goals. I already know what the best version of myself looks like, smells like, talks like, walks like, and acts like, but I have to work hard to achieve my goal of being her. This is my new year’s resolution. I call it “12 months 12 goals.” Each month I will have one main focus and a bundle of baby steps that will help me achieve this goal.

— Angelina Block 4, Hoggard High School

Resolutions like “I won’t eat x this year” or “I will only spend x hours on something” are virtually impossible. Even with the best of intentions you will end up craving the thing you are missing. Resolutions like “I will mind x this year” are often better suited for trying to limit something. You are not removing something from your life, but you are attempting to control/limit it.

— Yachen, Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA

Each year, I have tried to make resolutions like brushing my teeth everyday, working out more, being more honest, etc. Unfortunately, things happen. There are bad days, good days, and days where you really don’t want to keep up with the resolution. This is why I don’t think that having one set thing to focus on each year is something that is actually all that helpful to myself and others. I think a better thing to do is to just try to be better for yourself and others no matter what day or time of year it is. Whether it is a small thing, or a big thing, simply try to work to be a little better.

— David, Saint Joe’s Prep

I almost always give up on my resolutions in the middle of the year. I 100% agree with Mr. Rosenblatt. We should focus on trying to improve the world and not just ourselves. This is because if we succeed in making the world even a little bit better for others, we feel more accomplished and rewarded than if we improve ourselves. The feeling of knowing your actions helped to improve the world for others is so much more rewarding … because a new year is a good time for us to reflect on the passage of time and use it as motivation to strive for positive change both in our personal lives and in the world around us.

— AbdulMueez, Dubiski Career High School

Several came up with resolutions for 2024 that could help other people.

As any other human being, I get caught up in my own bubble very easily. New Year, New Me, is what we all say. Eventually, we just discard the thoughts of anyone else and focus on becoming a better individual. Yet in the whole world, so many problems still exist. What about climate change? Wars? Starvation? How are our personal resolutions positively affecting our world? Most of the time they don’t. I am a guilty part of the “New Year’s resolution” crowd. My goal is to become physically stronger, yet it’s apparent this goal is useless to the world and others in it.

How will hitting the gym this year positively affect the world? It most likely won’t at all. This idea of personal help is selfish. Instead of just focusing on myself, it will actually help the future if I pay attention to everything else little by little.

That is why I will pick up litter off the ground when I see it, support more local businesses, and donate to hospitals or local organizations to aid my community. These little gestures can make someone’s day, save their life or even the world.

— Morgane, Hoggard High School

I am inspired and encouraged by Mr. Rosenblatt’s essay. This is the first time that I realize even a small new year plan can help the world in the long run. A new year resolution I have in mind is to greet others with compliments from today. I will praise the hairstyle of my friends, wish my peers a nice day, or even say hello to strangers on campus. We can never underestimate the power of compliments: it’s easy to give and will influence others positively. I believe my plan can benefit both others and myself. My schoolmates and friends can feel warm and cared. I can make them more confident and positive. On the other hand, I will also gain lots of new friends and positive responses during this process. I will definitely be proud of treating others kindly.

— Yutong, Basis Bilingual School Shenzhen, China

In this new year, I vow to call my grandparents once a day to ask them how their day was. To let them know how much I love them. I vow to help my parents cook a special meal at least two times a week, to give them a time to relax (because they run my siblings and I around all day). I vow to donate clothes and food to those in need every month. I vow to volunteer at the Salvation Army to help serve food to others, to let them know there are people who love and care about them. I vow to help tutor my peers with different school subjects. Them succeeding is just as important to me as myself succeeding. I vow to play with my dog whenever I have a chance to. I want him to know that we love him and I want him to be able to experience fun moments with others (we only have one dog).

— Aubrie, Block 1, Hoggard High School

One thing that I would like to do differently this year is be a stronger, kinder person … I love my family and friends, but someone that’s typically had to love in this sense is my younger brother. He is the master of getting on my nerves and knows how to drive me mad. I want to learn how to control my feelings though, and build a strong relationship with him that I know we could have deep down. I want a relationship that can’t even be burned through by the sun.

— Ben, Fountain Valley Highschool

One thing that I am trying to do everyday is to make one person's day better. I think that giving is a great tool that people don’t utilize enough. Not only does it make you feel more fulfilled and happier it has a positive benefit on the other party as well. When I say giving back I mean maybe … thanking my parents for everything they do, appreciating my friends, complimenting my teacher, hugging my dog, or listening to someone’s story … That is how I want my 2024 to be.

— Barnus, Green Lane Hills

But others spoke up for resolutions designed for self-improvement, too.

I agree with the fact that some of the most worthwhile resolutions are ones that help others. This is truly a great thing, but I feel that it shouldn’t be taking away from resolutions made for yourself. Making sure that all your needs are met and that you are happy with your life should always be something that should be watched. So yes I think Mr. Rosenblatt makes a great point, but you should still make room for yourself in this busy life.

— Joaquin, Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia, PA

Although to better the world takes going step by step and person by person, I don’t agree that self-improvement isn’t something to focus on. Self-improvement could be about weight, like mentioned in the essay, but being comfortable in your body leads to someone being happy, and happy people lead to the world becoming a better place.

— Emily, Hoggard High School

Recognizing the intention of prioritizing resolutions aimed at making the world a better place, I strongly believe that personal growth should not be dismissed. Self improvement acts as a foundation, nurturing individuals’ ability to make contributions to the wider community in the future. The call for selflessness is compelling. I advocate for an approach that acknowledges both personal development and contributions to the greater world.

— Eric, Julia R. Masterman

And they shared some ways they hope to better their own lives this year.

School takes up roughly 9 months of the year, and those 9 months can be substantially rough when I know the classes I’m taking require time dedicated to studying, doing homework, a little more studying, and a lot more homework. Achieving a perfect eight hours requires a lot more action than talk; it means I have to completely reorganize my routine to get my work done, socialize, eat, and have a glimmer of time for myself, all before 10 PM. Going to bed in the early morning and barely catching 6 hours of sleep has, to say the least, been detrimental to my entire well-being. I would fall asleep on my desk since I didn’t get enough rest last night, and to then suddenly wake up at 4 AM to fervently complete my unfinished math homework. This problem isn’t just unique to me, actually it’s the complete opposite. Teens don’t fully consider the effects of neglecting sleep on neurological development and an overall healthy lifestyle. Maintaining the same bad habits you know are negatively affecting your health is easy, like eating junk-food and being sedentary all day. It requires real conscious effort and discipline to resist day-to-day temptations, and I seek to let go of my old habits holding me back from a brighter, healthier 2024.

— A.T, Fountain Valley High School

Typically, I don’t pay much attention to New Year’s resolutions. However, this year I plan on improving myself in numerous ways. I want to enhance my sports skills by dedicating more time to practice, watching games, and doing whatever it takes to progress. Also, I plan on fixing my diet and eating healthier. Additionally, I hope to influence the people in my life such as peers and the young children in my family to aim and reach their goals.

— Kingston, St. Joes Prep

I’m sixteen this year. According to my country’s government, I can finally learn to drive, so I want to try that this year. The roads can get dangerous in my country at times (think a sea of cars and motorcycles every day), so my parents still take me out everywhere, and it prevents me from having autonomy over my life. Sure, I won’t get a new car, and (to be honest) I’m really scared of driving in roads that look more like a war zone because of the sheer amount of vehicles colliding on each other, but I’m still looking forward to it. Wish me well!

— Shekina, Philippines

I have been thinking about time ever since the passing of my mother on the first of the year, how should you spend the time that you have with the ones that you love? It’s up to you. You don’t know? Believe me, you are not alone in that. In a world that is so filled with death and separation from the ones that you love, it remains so easy to forget what you feel that you have promised to you. Nothing in life is certain, a lesson that many have to learn through pain and suffering.

So my New Year’s resolution, don’t waste any more time. I have yet to learn fully what this means, but I refuse to let anything go unnoticed or unseen, I wish to value whatever time I have left with friends and family, so that when life throws another wrench I won’t be stuck on the side of the road of life.

For instance, it could be committing to regular gym visits or picking up a new hobby. Delving into history, the tradition dates back to Ancient Rome, where people vowed to settle debts with Janus, the god associated with January – hence the month's name. Over time, this practice gained popularity, evolving into the widely embraced tradition of setting New Year's resolutions.

3. Learn But Not Just for Grades

Though grades are important in a student's life, studying effectively is equally important for lifelong development & growth. If you are only focused on getting a good grade without paying attention to the quality of learning, you might attract success but not for the long term. So, this New Year, make a resolution acknowledging that it is easy to maintain certain numbers on your assignment reports, but the purpose is to learn from the concepts and apply them to your everyday life.

4. No Procrastination Anymore

We understand that dealing with procrastination can be challenging during student life. Ultimately, it only adds to stress and workload as projects or assignments progress. Conquering procrastination stands out as an excellent New Year's resolution idea for students. Remember, you're not alone in grappling with the motivation to complete tasks promptly. To overcome this hurdle, consider employing strategies such as creating a timeline and minimising distractions. Taking proactive steps can make a significant difference in staying on top of your responsibilities and enjoying a more manageable and fulfilling academic journey.

5. Adopt Healthier Eating Habits

It is quite rare to see college students with healthy eating habits. Strict time schedules, tight budgets, and frequent social engagements often lead students to eat unhealthy junk foods or processed foods as more “convenient food” over nutritious food options. But regularly consuming these highly processed foods negatively impacts our health and our mind and causes anxiety & fatigue. This New Year, avoid unhealthy foods and incorporate a healthier lifestyle.

6. Take Care of Your Mental Health

Apart from looking after your physical health, it's crucial for students to prioritize their mental well-being. Throughout academic, financial, and personal challenges, students often encounter uncertainty, impacting their mental health. This New Year, make it a resolution to focus on maintaining your mental wellness and steering clear of stress. By incorporating practices that promote mental health, such as mindfulness exercises or seeking support when needed, you can enhance your overall well-being and approach the year with a positive mindset.

Wrapping Up

These New Year resolutions for students offer a great starting point. Remember, everyone is unique, so choose resolutions that align with your goals. Whether adopting one from the list or creating your own, the key is dedication. Your resolution doesn't have to be grand – what matters is sticking with it and approaching it with commitment. As you step into the New Year, embrace the journey of self-improvement, stay focused on your goals, and watch how these small steps lead to big positive changes in your life. Happy New Year!
