A news report is similar to a news article. It is the basic facts of a story that is currently happening or that just happened. Writing a news report is easy if you report on the subject clearly, conduct good interviews, and write in a style that is clear, concise, and active.

Collecting Information for the Report

Step 1 Figure out what to write about.

To provide true information to the readers, you will have to provide proper evidence supporting it. Therefore, it is essential to collect as much information as possible to prove your point. There are multiple ways to collect and present information, some of which are mentioned below.

Site visiting is an interesting way of collecting and gathering all the information related to the event. It will help you find the exact data regarding the event. You can note everything you see and capture images to showcase as evidence.

While surveying, you can find a lot of people around you so that information can be collected from the witnesses. Their accounts may sound a little exaggerated at times; be smart enough to separate facts from fabricated information. To ensure you do not miss out on any information, you can record all your interviews.

After you have collected all the interviews, you can transcribe them to make them understandable to the readers.

Writing the Report – Steps to Follow

For a news report, the most important information comes from the headline and the first line of the report. The style of writing a news report must be like an inverted pyramid where the important information must be written in the first paragraph. The body of the report covers other information and supporting details related to the event. And the less important information must be added in the concluding paragraph.

While writing the report, make sure to start with the introductory paragraph, which must include the main story. The people involved, place and date have to be mentioned in this paragraph. This can be followed by a detailed account of the event/occurrence.

The body of the report must include other relevant information about the event. You can describe whatever you noted during the site visit and add the interviews you took. Make sure that the report is written in the third person point of view and in a neutral voice. It must be written in a way that sounds more informative rather than opinionated. There is not much place for personal emotions in a news report; it has to be objective.

While writing a news report, make sure you answer all the WH questions

  • What was the event?
  • Where did it take place?
  • When did it take place? (Date and Time)
  • Who was involved in the event?
  • Why did it happen?
  • How did the event happen?

After you have collected all these answers, you can begin writing the news report.

While writing a report, keep in mind that the sentences must be clear and concise. Do not write complex sentences. This will also help in using the apt vocabulary and in reducing grammatical errors.

Always acknowledge where you acquired the information unless it is common knowledge. Not giving credit to someone can get you in trouble.

A news report is different from an opinion piece in that only factual information is provided in a news report. Therefore, while writing a news report, make sure to collect all the facts and evidence and present them well in your report.

In the concluding paragraph, you can summarise your findings and also provide information related to a possible follow-up.

The headline plays a very crucial role in news report writing as it attracts the readers. A proper headline can be framed for a news report only after the writing is completed.

Always follow the inverted pyramid style to write a news report. The important information is written at the beginning while leaving the less important parts until the end of the report. Starter/baseline assessment

Pupils spend five minutes reviewing their pyramid plan, to remind themselves of the order of information in their reports, while also referring to their original news report plans for detailed information.

As a class, recap the structural and language features of news reporting. How will you begin your news report? Which information will you include in the middle section? How many quotes will you include? How will you end your report? What do you need to remember about using paragraphs in news reports?

Learning activity

Pupils write the first draft of their news reports, using the planning sheets which they created in previous lessons.

Give pupils deadlines throughout the session to replicate the newsroom experience. You may wish to split the sections of the report into separate tasks with a deadline for each one, eg: 5W introduction; quotes and reported speech from interviews; additional research on the topic; final paragraph.

Refer back to the class News report toolkit, as well as the Model news reports and News reporting language word banks from lesson 11 to support pupils to write in an authentic news report style and structure.

Pupils share their news reports with a partner, providing feedback to each other based upon the following questions: which language features have they included in their news report? Have they begun their news report with a 5 W introduction? Have they included  interesting  information? Have they started a new paragraph for every new point? Is the news report  balanced ? Do you think it is a  truthful  and  fair  report? Why?

Use success criteria to remind pupils of the key features of a news report, including: inverted pyramid structure - beginning with the most important information, moving on to additional interesting details and quotes, finishing with what might happen next/similar stories that have happened before/a really good quote that sums up the story; 5 Ws introduction, starting with Who or What, not When; short paragraphs; concise, formal language; written in the third person and past tense; reported and direct speech; relative clauses.

Even though we live in an aging society, and the fastest-growing segment of our population is the 65+ category, there is still not always a great deal of coverage on the elderly or issues effecting them.  For this report, I read through a major, statewide newspaper and watched a typical half-hour evening news program, and while there were some stories that were relevant to aging and the elderly, it was by no means a subject of major coverage.  Here is what I found.

Summary of NBC Nightly News Airing May 30

NBC is a nationally broadcast 30-minute nightly news program.  The episode I watched aired on the evening of May 30 th .  Of the 30 minute news program, fully 9 minutes was given over to commercials.  Of the 21 minutes left, approximately 10 minutes and 30 seconds were dedicated to politics/national news, 2 minutes 15 seconds to sports, 2 minutes 30 seconds to health and medicine and 6 minutes to popular culture and entertainment.  However, the lead story – comprising a full 4 minutes and 30 seconds and the longest story on this news did in fact involved the elderly and aging (at least indirectly): it was the story partly about Shinseki resigning from the VA and partly about the plight of veterans (especially elderly veterans from the Vietnam and Korean Wars) trying to get healthcare through the VA system.  In addition to this, there were two shorter pieces that had to do with aging and the elderly: a 10 second clip about a World War veteran who made footage of the war and the footage was discovered recently by his son in the family attack and another 10 second clip about Dick Van Dyke keeping active at 88.  Overall, out of the 21 non-commercial minutes in this news program, 4 minutes and 50 seconds (nearly a quarter of the program) had something to with aging or the elderly (NBC News, 2014).

Summary of Democrat Gazette, May 31 st Edition

The newspaper I read was the Democrat Gazette, a major daily newspaper which is distributed state-wide.  The newspaper has 7 sections and a total of 50 pages.  The first section, covering national and international news, had a quarter-column on page 1 and additional full page on page three of Shenseki quitting the VA and again had a lot of coverage in this story on how the elderly veterans (as well as new vets from Iraq or Afghanistan) were effected (Jones, 2014, p. 3).  In addition, there was a quarter-column page on Medicare coverage for a sex-change operation from a 74-year-old transgender veteran who had brought suit over this issue and won in court.   (Brendeis, 2014, p.4). Section B, covering local news, had an article about the continued financial health of the Public Employee Retirement System and, in their editorials, a half-column about the death of Maya Angelou (Horiot,  2014, p. 6).   Sections C (Sports) and D (Farm and Business) had not relevant articles, but Section E (Home and Garden) had a half-page in the back of the section on renovating bathrooms for elderly parents (Crills, 2014, p.8). Sections F (Automotive) and G (Classifieds) had no relevant coverage.

Concluding Thoughts

I was actually surprised, going through the newspaper and watching the nightly news, at the fact that there was more coverage on aging and elderly topics than I thought that there would be. I chose the newspaper and the television broadcast completely at random, and I think I just happened to get lucky because of the stories about the VA scandal and the death of Maya Angelou were just happening to get major coverage at the time.  I actually read the paper fairly regularly, and watching live streaming of news broadcasts at least a few times a week and generally I do not see that much coverage on these topics.  We are generally a culture of youth, and it is youth-related issues that generally get the most attention in modern society.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

In France, debates about how to deal with disability led to the adoption of different strategies over time. While people with temporary difficulties were able to access public welfare, the most common response to people with long-term disabilities, such as hearing or vision loss, was to group them together in institutions (Tombs, 1996). At first, a joint institute for the blind and deaf was created, and although the partnership was motivated more by financial considerations than by the well-being of the residents, the institute aimed to help people develop skills valuable to society (Weygand, 2009). Eventually blind institutions were separated from deaf institutions, and the focus shifted towards education of the blind, as was the case for the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which Louis Braille attended (Jimenez et al, 2009). The growing acknowledgement of the uniqueness of different disabilities led to more targeted education strategies, fostering an environment in which the benefits of a specifically blind education could be more widely recognized.

Several different systems of tactile reading can be seen as forerunners to the method Louis Braille developed, but these systems were all developed based on the sighted system. The Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris taught the students to read embossed roman letters, a method created by the school’s founder, Valentin Hauy (Jimenez et al., 2009). Reading this way proved to be a rather arduous task, as the letters were difficult to distinguish by touch. The embossed letter method was based on the reading system of sighted people, with minimal adaptation for those with vision loss. As a result, this method did not gain significant success among blind students.

Louis Braille was bound to be influenced by his school’s founder, but the most influential pre-Braille tactile reading system was Charles Barbier’s night writing. A soldier in Napoleon’s army, Barbier developed a system in 1819 that used 12 dots with a five line musical staff (Kersten, 1997). His intention was to develop a system that would allow the military to communicate at night without the need for light (Herron, 2009). The code developed by Barbier was phonetic (Jimenez et al., 2009); in other words, the code was designed for sighted people and was based on the sounds of words, not on an actual alphabet. Barbier discovered that variants of raised dots within a square were the easiest method of reading by touch (Jimenez et al., 2009). This system proved effective for the transmission of short messages between military personnel, but the symbols were too large for the fingertip, greatly reducing the speed at which a message could be read (Herron, 2009). For this reason, it was unsuitable for daily use and was not widely adopted in the blind community.

Nevertheless, Barbier’s military dot system was more efficient than Hauy’s embossed letters, and it provided the framework within which Louis Braille developed his method. Barbier’s system, with its dashes and dots, could form over 4000 combinations (Jimenez et al., 2009). Compared to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, this was an absurdly high number. Braille kept the raised dot form, but developed a more manageable system that would reflect the sighted alphabet. He replaced Barbier’s dashes and dots with just six dots in a rectangular configuration (Jimenez et al., 2009). The result was that the blind population in France had a tactile reading system using dots (like Barbier’s) that was based on the structure of the sighted alphabet (like Hauy’s); crucially, this system was the first developed specifically for the purposes of the blind.

While the Braille system gained immediate popularity with the blind students at the Institute in Paris, it had to gain acceptance among the sighted before its adoption throughout France. This support was necessary because sighted teachers and leaders had ultimate control over the propagation of Braille resources. Many of the teachers at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth resisted learning Braille’s system because they found the tactile method of reading difficult to learn (Bullock & Galst, 2009). This resistance was symptomatic of the prevalent attitude that the blind population had to adapt to the sighted world rather than develop their own tools and methods. Over time, however, with the increasing impetus to make social contribution possible for all, teachers began to appreciate the usefulness of Braille’s system (Bullock & Galst, 2009), realizing that access to reading could help improve the productivity and integration of people with vision loss. It took approximately 30 years, but the French government eventually approved the Braille system, and it was established throughout the country (Bullock & Galst, 2009).

Although Blind people remained marginalized throughout the nineteenth century, the Braille system granted them growing opportunities for social participation. Most obviously, Braille allowed people with vision loss to read the same alphabet used by sighted people (Bullock & Galst, 2009), allowing them to participate in certain cultural experiences previously unavailable to them. Written works, such as books and poetry, had previously been inaccessible to the blind population without the aid of a reader, limiting their autonomy. As books began to be distributed in Braille, this barrier was reduced, enabling people with vision loss to access information autonomously. The closing of the gap between the abilities of blind and the sighted contributed to a gradual shift in blind people’s status, lessening the cultural perception of the blind as essentially different and facilitating greater social integration.

The Braille system also had important cultural effects beyond the sphere of written culture. Its invention later led to the development of a music notation system for the blind, although Louis Braille did not develop this system himself (Jimenez, et al., 2009). This development helped remove a cultural obstacle that had been introduced by the popularization of written musical notation in the early 1500s. While music had previously been an arena in which the blind could participate on equal footing, the transition from memory-based performance to notation-based performance meant that blind musicians were no longer able to compete with sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997). As a result, a tactile musical notation system became necessary for professional equality between blind and sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997).

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

Strategies for Writing News Reports

The news report is one of two long writing tasks on the OSSLT. It is scored in two ways: Topic Development, and Use of Conventions.

Topic Development is scored in 10-point increments up to 60 points. The rubric for Topic Development identifies three elements that are being evaluated:

  • Supporting Details
  • Organization

Use of Conventions is scored in 10-point increments up to 40 points. The rubric for Use of Conventions give full marks for "control of conventions" and fewer than full marks depending on how much the writer's errors "distract from communication".

The 2018 OSSLT Scoring Guide is a great resource with many annotated examples of student work. In this guide, the examples which scored at a passing level were 200 words or more. Because the size of students' writing varies so much, that should be a good target for students to aim for.

"Shadow" Requirements

The news report is one of the more challenging tasks for many students, because many students have not come into contact with enough news reports in their real lives to be familiar with the nuances of the genre. In EQAO's Planning and Preparation Guide , the following clarification is made:

Note: Students should not write an advertisement, a television or radio report, a dialogue or a report about an event that will take place in the future. They should write about an event that has occurred in the past in order to inform readers about the event.

For many students, the little exposure they have to the news is from television and radio, so doing enough preparatory reading is an essential part of their preparation for the news report. Internalizing some stock phrases and ways of framing issues from real-world news reports is essential for students who struggle with this task.

Quotations are not requested explicitly, but are present in all of the examples scoring above Code 30 in the 2018 OSSLT Scoring Guide . Unless students are coached to use quotations by a teacher or other mentor, they might not take advantage of this useful way to include "how" and "why" information.

In this report from a study of a 24-hour news cycle of 30-minute news coverage inclusive of advertisements and commercials by the CNN channel, the major sources of their news identified include; reporters, media contact, press releases, check call, newsroom diary, file, press conference, monitoring and politicians. The study identified that the time and space provided to health and aging topics is just 7% of the total news time which is typically the shortest period of time during a newscast. Normally, in a 30-minute news coverage, commercials come first with an average time of 8-minutes, crime news last for 4-minutes, sports news lasts 4-minutes, weather coverage last 3-minutes whereas topics on disasters, health and accidents cover 2-minutes each during the broadcast. Additionally, the health and aging topics are commonly discussed towards end of the news time except for periods where there are national and worldwide disasters that are likely to affect Americans such as the issue with regards to Zika virus. The time and space to which the health and aging issues are provided for in a 24-hour news cycle shows how the media station fail to provide awareness to the public. In most cases, people pay attention at the beginning of the news since they consider that part as more important than towards the end of the news. It is thus vital for the news stations to identify a suitable period and percentage of broadcast that they will allocate to the health and aging issues since they are important to all Americans.
