I was fortunate enough to gain work in the administration field and so continue to improve my knowledge and computer skills. I am also currently undertaking a 20 week OCR accredited CLAIT Level 1 course at open college to gain more computing skills.

Obtaining a degree in human resource/personnel management will enable me to seek employment in a large corporation where I eventually wish to specialise in staff development.

All my A-level studies interested me, but I felt my sociology A-Level course gave me much information relevant to a human resources/personnel management course such as knowledge of human behaviour and the reasoning behind it.

However I do realise the course will entail much work dealing with facts and figures and feel with my GCSE Maths grade B I am well equipped to manage this side of the course too.

Throughout my education I contributed in many events such as induction days, sporting event supervision and attending volleyball and badminton clubs over several years. I also attended many school trips in the UK and abroad. In year eleven I was a senior student, running year seven homework and games clubs that contributed to me achieving my Trident Award to Gold Standard.

The work experience I undertook and my current employment challenge me to work with a diverse range of people in an office environment and allowed me to prove I could work effectively in this kind of occupation as the report of my employer confirmed.

My part time work as a sales assistant also gave me the confidence to communicate well with people from all walks of life and has improved my social and inter-personal relationship skills with other staff members and public. I feel my proven record of good time keeping, hard work and regular attendance would enable me to benefit from a place at university.

In my spare time I enjoy socialising because keeping in touch with my friends is important to me and I also enjoy keeping fit and regularly go to my local leisure centre. In addition I enjoy computing and creating websites that allow me to communicate with people from across the world.

My decision to study human resource/personnel management has taken a lot of research and thought over the past three years.

After talking to several people employed in this field of work and researching what the course entails and with the rewards it holds, it was obvious that this kind of work was what I wanted to do and so I have applied to take a degree at university to provide me with the qualifications and experience I need to follow my chosen career path.

How To Write A Personal Statement For A Job? Employment

Personal statements are often used in job applications, but can also be used for college and university applications, too. Here, we’ll give you some hints and tips for creating a personal statement for a job that goes the distance. Read on to find out more! 

What is a personal statement? 

First thing’s first…what is it?

A personal statement for a job is usually a paragraph about you that goes on the top of your CV. It’s sometimes known as a personal profile, professional profile, or even a career objective – so keep an eye out for these kinds of terms too in your job hunt.

Your personal statement should be an ‘ overview of you ,’ covering things like: who you are, why you think you are suitable for the role, what you will bring to the job, and your career goals. 

If you are wondering why a personal statement is important (after all, shouldn’t all that be in your CV anyway?) it’s worth knowing that recruiters get 100s of CVs sent to them every single day. And on average they spend about 6 seconds looking at a CV before making a decision on the candidate. So, having a personal statement at the top of your CV gives a brief, easy to read summary that will hook the recruiter in and make them want to call you in for an interview. 

Example of a personal statement for a job: 

A friendly and enthusiastic individual, currently looking to return to a retail assistant role after spending the last 3 years raising a family. I possess excellent communication and listening skills, and I work extremely well in a team, as well as being able to work confidently on my own. I have recently volunteered at a local charity shop, as a sales assistant, to refresh my skills, and I am committed to continuing my career on a full-time basis. 

How to write a personal statement

Like the example above, your personal statement should be short and sweet. Remember, your aim is to catch the attention of the recruiter so they read your CV in more depth before inviting you to interview. 

Before you start, it’s best to sit down with your updated CV and make a list of all of your relevant skills and experience. Examples of skills you could include are: 

  • Communication 
  • Numeracy (i.e. good at working with money)
  • Problem solving 
  • Organisation 
  • Creativity 
  • Confidence 

Once you have a list of these things, it should be a lot easier to pull together an effective personal statement. 

What if I have no work experience? 

Having no work experience doesn’t mean you can’t write a good personal statement. There are plenty of other ways you can demonstrate your skills. Do you have a hobby or an interest? If you do, it’s likely you use key skills to do this and the best part is you can put this in your personal statement. Similarly, if you were involved in any clubs, teams or projects at school. 

The key to writing an effective personal statement is keeping it relevant to the role you are applying to. So make sure you read the job advert and any accompanying information thoroughly to understand what the employer is looking for! 

What do I put at the start of my personal statement? 

Many, many people struggle to write about themselves. So, if this is you, don’t worry! To kick off your personal statement, see if you can come up with a short, sharp statement (no longer than one sentence) that describes you accurately. 

This could be one that highlights your previous work experience: 

‘A flexible construction worker with three years’ experience in bricklaying, roofing, plastering and plumbing.’ 

Or one that shows skills and experience you have from hobbies, interest or education: 

‘A hardworking individual with a passion for creativity alongside a Distinction in Level 3 Graphic Design.’

Again, keep it short. And don’t forget to big yourself up a little bit! Make the recruiter believe that you are the best person for the role you are applying for. 

What goes in the middle of a personal statement?

When it comes to writing your personal statement, it’s best to have at least a loose structure in mind to help you get everything down that you need to. You could include: 

  • Why are you applying?
  • Why are you suitable for the role?
  • What relevant job experience or training do you have?
  • What projects or experiences have you taken part in that could show your abilities ?
  • What makes you the perfect person for the job?

Use the answers to these questions to write your personal statement. 

What goes at the end of a personal statement? 

The end of your personal statement should make it clear to whoever is reading what your goals are professionally. For example, the construction worker above may put: 

‘Looking to take on my next challenge in the world of construction, and develop my skills with a reputable local business.’

Or, for the aspiring graphic designer: 

‘Looking for a start in the exciting world of graphic design, where I can learn from the best with a creative and innovative company.’ 

Remember: keep it brief! 

Do’s and Don’ts for your personal statement 

To help you on your way, here is a list of the do’s and don’ts for your personal statement. 

  • Make sure your tone is polite, friendly and (most importantly) professional. 
  • Keep it short and sweet. Your personal statement should only be around 3 or 4 sentences long.
  • Include relevant information, such as previous experience. 
  • Highlight your key skills. 
  • Make it clear what kind of role you are looking for – this will help highlight your suitability for the one you are applying for. 
  • Use the job advert, person specification and any other information you have about the company to inform your personal statement. 
  • Make your achievements clear! Blow your own trumpet! 
  • Use slang words or be too conversational
  • Include any personal information that’s not relevant. For example: how many children you have, whether you are single or married, etc. 
  • Be negative! 
  • Lie or exaggerate the truth. 
  • Take a template from online without personalising it!

Management and Human Resources Personal Statement

Growing up, I had a natural inclination to organise; be it planning games in the playground at six years old, to ensuring everything was in place for group success in school and college. I pride myself in achieving a high standard, and enjoy working in an environment with people who are as dedicated and eager to succeed as myself.

A Human Resources degree incorporates the skills I possessed from an early age, with the key elements of my A Level subjects, thus making it obvious that this would be the perfect degree opportunity for me. I am currently studying A-levels in English Language, Religious studies and Law. These subjects contain key aspects relating to a Human Resource degree ; understanding emotions through paralinguistic features, having the ability to construct linguistically perfect letters and documents, being able to identify the ethically and morally right action in a situation, and the concepts of law. As well as this all of these subjects developed my essay writing skills; a key attribute for success at University. I aspire to do a Human Resource degree that includes a year working in an industry as I believe that practical experience is just as vital as theory based learning. Having a year of experience would allow me to widen my skills, and give me a true understanding of Human Resources, whilst applying both my academia to my physical work, and vice versa.

My first experience of Human Resources was working for a Human Resource team at Foxes Biscuits. This gave me an insight into the generalist side of HR, as it was factory based and dealt with issues that were found in a factory environment. I had the opportunity to have one-on-one meetings with all levels of a Human Resource team, as well as meetings with the manager of Training and Development, and the Occupational Health team. Meeting these people allowed me to not only gain knowledge and experience of the duties of someone in or related to HR, but it also allowed me to ask a team of people who employ people in HR their opinion on what to do regarding my university degree, and the specialisms and qualifications that would help me into employment after my degree. I also did work experience with a specialist Human Resource team in the Two Sisters shared services centre. This showed me an alternative side to Human Resources that dealt with the issues of thousands of people, rather than a small number of people. I was able to see the work that went into the technology used by the smaller factories, and also saw the payroll and reporting sides too. This was a completely different side to Human Resources, and it was a very enriching experience to know that my degree could take me down so many different paths.

As another chance to widen my study, I completed an A-level in Creative Writing outside of the curriculum. This allowed me to develop my independent learning skills, and focus on the finer detail of a piece of writing. Interpreting situations was a key element to this course, and I believe this would help me in my degree as Human resources requires you to understand the different interpretations of an event, and deduce the most likely or best explanation.

In July 2018, I will be taking part in a volunteering project with my college, in which I will be helping to build a school in Nepal, and supporting less fortunate children. I had to go through 3 separate interview stages, and competed with 136 other applicants to be given this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing the world from another perspective, and making a difference. I believe this trip to Nepal will help not only with my social skills, but also academically. Human resources requires you to give help to people in need, and this will be a skill I am able to understand and perfect from this opportunity. I am an extremely driven student who strives for success. I look forward to joining many different societies, pursuing my passions and representing the University with pride.

Khabarovsk is one of the most significant and beautiful cities of Russia's Far East. It stands on the right bank of the Amur River along the scenic Trans-Siberian railway and almost touches the Chinese border.
