Every year in October
The aim of this event is to welcome students from the graduate programme and outline the scientific topics covered by the programme via interdisciplinary conferences. Workshops to facilitate student integration and help them meet one another and sessions with poster presentations are also held as part of this event. The seminar run at the beginning of the academic year is a wonderful event to bring master’s and doctoral students, lecturers and researchers together.

International Academy
Every year in August
The International Academy in partnership with the Graduate Programmes offer an online-taught 25-hour summer training open to all international students who have been admitted to a Graduate Programme (GP) in Lille. It aims at preparing them for higher education studies and everyday life in France through an intensive training in the French language, but also culture, methodology and an insight into the academic environment, in line with their language level and fields of study.
If you wish to join the training, reach out to the Graduate Programme office, once and only once you have been selected as a GP student and ask for the form.
The participation is fully covered by the Graduate Programme office.

How we landed job interviews for professorships straight out of our PhD programmes

We met during the last year of our PhD training, after securing placements at the University of Illinois Chicago’s Department of Psychiatry for our predoctoral internships — the final step of our clinical doctoral programmes. V. R. came from the University of Georgia in Athens and was pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology, and Q. L. came from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and was working towards a PhD in clinical science and quantitative methods. It was amid the academic rigour and personal stress of the last year of our programmes that we became friends. We bonded over being immigrants and not speaking English as our first language while navigating the complexities of academia. We both wanted to forgo postdoctoral training and instead immediately become junior professors. Now, we’re assistant professors: V. R. is at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Q. L. is at Boston University in Massachusetts.
The odds we faced in the academic job market had seemed insurmountable, particularly to immigrants, and we had been cautioned by mentors and even junior faculty members about the challenge ahead. But we succeeded: we received a combined total of 27 in-person interviews, leading to 15 tenure-track assistant-professor offers across departments of psychology, paediatrics or psychiatry, schools of education and academic medical centres. How to move labs
Despite the positive outcome, the process was stressful, fast and unpredictable. Our friendship became a sanctuary: amid the daunting job market and our own self-doubt, we understood and encouraged each other. We want to offer what our friendship provided us — understanding, support and encouragement — to researchers hoping to stay in academia after earning a PhD, so we are sharing our reflections and insights.
We must first make clear: no amount of job-search tips and tricks can substitute for good science and a strong publication record. To gauge our readiness, we looked up the CV of the most recent hire in each department that we applied to. We also made sure we had backup offers of postdoctoral positions. While navigating this process, we learnt that institutions were interested in candidates who planned to pursue external funding.

We had both obtained federal and private funding before — making us more competitive. We urge aspiring professors to prioritize their research contributions, external fellowship and grant applications and academic achievements above all.
To readers who’ve successfully navigated this process, many of our reflections and insights could seem obvious. However, this kind of advice can be the hardest to follow during a fast-moving job hunt, with several moving pieces involved and new considerations and job offers or advertisements emerging unexpectedly. Treat this as a checklist before beginning to fill out job applications.
Tips and tricks
Start your search early. Allow ample time to prepare for the job hunt; research potential options, such as jobs in academic medical centres, standard department positions or tenure-track jobs in related fields; and submit applications. Plan to reply to job ads long before the first deadline. Starting early gives you time to collect and incorporate feedback from mentors and colleagues.
Training: Free course on peer review
Prepare your networks. The academic job market can be unpredictable, with opportunities emerging unexpectedly. It is important to think about who can write letters for you — sometimes at short notice. Most of our applications required three letters of recommendation from all applicants. Others requested letters from only shortlisted candidates.
Plan ahead. The final drafts of materials took, on average, one to two months in total to prepare and polish. The initial drafts took about 8 hours, and the research statement required a total of 16 hours. (The research statement summarizes your research programme, the work you’ve done so far and what you plan to pursue in future. It can also highlight why a particular institution is well-suited to support your work.) Preparing drafted statements in advance made it easier to adapt them to different positions later — tweaking materials for specific positions took 30–60 minutes per application.
Research potential job opportunities. Don’t just rely on word-of-mouth or googling specific positions to find things you’re interested in applying to. Use online job boards (such as HigherEdJobs or Nature Careers ), and tap into your professional network by sending e-mails or LinkedIn messages to your mentors and colleagues, letting them know you’re on the job market. Scour social media and department websites to find available positions. We both posted on X (formerly Twitter) that we were job hunting, and several people reached out with opportunities.
Develop job application ‘templates’. Create a set of well-crafted templates for your application materials, such as cover letters and statements, on which you can easily fill in your name, relevant details and where you’ve previously worked. Having adaptable documents allowed us to respond quickly to new postings.
Tailor your application materials. Templates can take you only so far. Take the time to customize your application materials, including your CV, cover letter (each of ours was one page long) and research statement, to highlight your relevant skills, experiences and research contributions. Tailoring your materials to each position demonstrates genuine interest and increases your chances of standing out to hiring committees. Generic applications are easy for hiring managers to reject. Mentioning centres or institutes that align with your research; available resources, such as early-career programmes, that you want to take advantage of; and the names of people whom you are interested in working with can help to personalize your application materials.
Stay organized. Maintain a well-organized system to track application deadlines, requirements and submission statuses. Be ready to remind your letter writers to submit their recommendations. Keep a calendar or spreadsheet to ensure that all required materials are submitted on time and to track when to follow up. An example spreadsheet is provided below.
Practise for interviews and job talks. Run mock interviews with your peers or mentors. Practise answering common interview questions and develop concise, compelling responses that highlight your expertise, teaching abilities and fit. Treat these seriously — you’re likely to be nervous in the real interview, so try to recreate that while rehearsing, perhaps by inviting a relatively unknown colleague or professor to join the practice runs. V. R. recorded her job talk on Zoom and sent it to others for feedback.
Practising your job talk — a presentation of your academic research that is often a spoken version of your research statement — until you know it backwards and forwards will prepare you for the unexpected. In addition, rehearsing how you plan to respond to different questions, and practising saying that you want people to hold their questions until the end, can be helpful.
Prepare a start-up budget to get your lab running. Many academic positions include a start-up fund for incoming faculty members. It is typically used for summer salary and staffing or research costs. You might be asked for an estimated budget before, during or after the interview stage — so you should have one ready in advance. When preparing your budget, keep in mind the spending norms at the institution and for your discipline. Ask for more than you think you need, because this amount will often be reduced during negotiations.
As we look back on our job-hunting experiences, we are reminded of how much we grew in this process, in ways that are not related to just our jobs — and this growth continued in our interviews .

Moscow metro blasts: another fsb inside job.
“ The first explosion took place on a train after it had stopped in the Lubyanka station in central Moscow , close to the headquarters of Russia’s FSB security service, a spokeswoman for the Russian emergencies ministry told AFP .”
“ The first blast at the Lubyanka metro station killed 22 people and wounded 12 . The second at Park Kulturi station left 12 dead and 7 wounded ,” reported AFP . Russian Federal Security Service chief Alexander Bortnikov has already blamed Chechen rebels for the attack, an explanation slavishly accepted by western media outlets like the BBC who are already running feature articles about the history of terrorism in Russia that completely fail to mention the FSB’s direct role in almost every major attack to have taken place over the last 10 years .
Since the explanation that two female suicide bombers with explosives strapped to their bodies were responsible for the bombing has come directly from the FSB , past history means we can only treat the official story with the utmost suspicion.
The notorious Russian FSB has a documented history of staging false flag events in order to accomplish political agendas .
update: bombs kill 12 in russia’s dagestan region from cnn : Twelve people – nine of them police officers – were killed Wednesday when two bombs exploded in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan , officials told CNN. Another 23 people, including 11 police officers, were hospitalized with wounds from the bombings, at least one of which was carried out by a suicide bomber, according to a spokesman for the Dagestan police and Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee in the Russian prosecutor general’s office. It happened two days after female suicide bombers killed at least 39 people on the Moscow metro .

India’s electric two-wheeler startups surge to over 150 as government revs up EV push
The number of startups in India’s electric two-wheeler market has surged to over 150 from 54 in 2021, driven by government incentives to promote clean vehicles and cut oil imports, according to a new analysis.
The influx has intensified competition in a segment expected to grow 15-20 times to annual sales of 15-20 million units over the next decade, Bernstein said in a report late Tuesday.
“Most are competing in the mainstream, and 85% of the 65 models launched last year were such products: high-speed as against speed and range-constrained products, which used to be a feature of the startups,” Bernstein analysts wrote. “The average battery capacity for new launches increased from 2.3kWhr in 2022 to 3kWhr.”
India aims to achieve 30% electric vehicle penetration by 2030 and net zero carbon emissions by 2070. The government has offered incentives under its FAME II scheme, which provides subsidies to buyers and was recently extended to 2024.
Despite a reduction in FAME II subsidies in mid-2023 , the number of electric two-wheeler companies rose from 124 in June 2023 to 152 by January 2024, with much of the increase coming from “importers” sourcing components or entire vehicles from abroad, Bernstein noted.
“Most of these are just assembled kits from China,” said Kunal Khattar, founder of mobility-focused venture firm AdvantEdge. “Getting an EV product out the door is not expensive. It’s the brand building and distribution that folks underestimate.”

Startups currently hold seven of the top 10 spots, including the market leader (Ola Electric, which is also planning to go public soon ) with a 39% share as of January 2024. Some 85% of sales volumes are concentrated among the top five players, however.
Bernstein’s analysis found low barriers to entry, with electric two-wheelers built using outsourced models and readily available components. Only about half of the 35 founders they analyzed had engineering backgrounds.
The government is now shifting toward production-linked incentives (PLI) favoring domestic manufacturing . Most established automotive companies have been granted PLI while only a few startups qualified, potentially providing a cost advantage for major incumbents, Bernstein said.
The report sees room for at least five startups to emerge as relevant players alongside established companies, but cautions that intense competition could keep industry profit margins and returns subdued in the medium term.

The best April Fools’ Day campaigns are the ones which blur the lines between joking and reality. So for your next prank, try to craft it in a way that makes it as believable as possible.
Last year, language learning platform Duolingo paired with streaming service Peacock to do just that.
On April Fools’ Day, the two brands launched a unique type of dating show. The concept? None of the contestants speak the same language.
The announcement tweet for the fake show received over 7 million views, boosting mentions of both brands on April Fools’ Day and getting plenty of users to discuss the prank.

The high production value helped trick followers into believing it was real.
So if you want to make your next April Fools’ Day prank a success, try to keep the campaign somewhat realistic – but in a way that’s slightly questionable. A tasty ingredient in any April Fools’ Day recipe includes company buy-in. And this works brilliantly if you can get a major figure in your organization to work with you to produce compelling, somewhat-believable content.
Vegan bacon brand La Vie decided to capitalize on this by releasing a video with their CEO. The campaign? They contradicted their biggest core value and started selling meat.
The brand announced it’s venture into the meat market on April Fools’ Day, by pretending to release “animal-based bacon” called “La Mort.”
The brand released a tongue in cheek video with their CEO, Nicolas Schweitzer, front and center, explaining why they were venturing into the meat industry. He said: “Just look at the numbers: 99% of the meat consumed today is of animal origin. For us, launching La Mort is a no-brainer.”
Knowing the campaign would cause a stir, La Vie used April Fools’ Day to reiterate their core values, and bring attention to the vegan food market.

For example, you could “launch” a new – but questionable – product. And that’s exactly what the automobile manufacturer Subaru did.
Subaru released a press release on their website on April Fools’ Day, announcing their pursuit into the world of snacks . An unusual endeavor for a car brand, the company claimed they were to start selling granola, flavored with “blends of wholesome grains, nuts, dried fruits, and the promise of the open road.”
In the release, Moe Muesli, Head of Texture and Granularity at Subaru, said: “At Subaru, we’re committed to being More Than a Car Company, and now, we are literally More Than a Car Company, because we’re making granola.”
The sarcasm in the press release helped to indicate that the stunt was simply April Fools’ Day related, but be careful what you wish for. Plenty of people on social media were actually looking forward to the release.

Know your audience
When crafting a successful April Fools’ Day campaign, keep your audience in mind. The more you’re clued into the ins and outs of your demographic, the more you can lean into a joke that will grab their attention.
That’s exactly what food company Heinz did for their latest April Fools’ Day prank. Understanding that there is an age-old problem of how to get the last bit of sauce out of a ketchup bottle, Heinz created a solution to the problem. Enter: the “Ketch-Up and Down” bottle .
The invention would solve the pain point easily: no matter how people choose to store the bottle, the sauce will always be dispensed straight away.
The prank ended up on all corners of the internet, with hundreds of consumers unaware that it was a prank. If anything, many were keen on the idea (despite it being slightly silly).

The salary is 1758 € gross / month in 2018. Some PhD students also arrive with their funding in the form of scholarships from their country. Activities complementary to research activities may be proposed with additional remuneration paid to granted PhD students. This supplement is calculated annually and paid monthly [decree of August 29, 2016].
